clear glass with pressed ice crystal-like appearance A founder of the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops) with Josef Hoffmann in 1903, Koloman Moser began his career as a painter working with the Vienna Secession artists in the Viennese Art Nouveau style of the 1890s. His early Secession designs are characterized by naturalistic motifs on a grid-pattern. His later work for the Wiener Werkstätte included graphic design, metalwork, ceramics, leatherwork and glass and incorporated more abstract and geometric decoration, also using a grid pattern. In this pitcher Moser has removed all decoration and employed the crackle pattern of the glass as the sole ornament on the simple geometric form. Size: 8 x 5 1/8 x 4 1/2 in. "HOT SNAKES" 9/1/22 11" x 17" #offsetprint! . WOW...today marks the 20th anniversary of the @hotsnakesband poster I designed...way back in 2002! . #HOTSNAKES was one of my favorite bands growing up! I also grew up on @rftcrftc and @dljband . So it was a big deal to design a poster for a @swami_john_reis project. A lot of great artists have done art for one of the bands he's been in. Including #Pushead! #AutomaticMidnight and #SuicideInvoice are my favorite albums by HS. Please check them out!!! I remember going to the show at the @thetroubadour and being blown away by how AMAZING @beehiveandthebarracudas were. (Around that time "'Plastic Soul' With The White Apes" had come out and I was playing it nonstop! You need to check it out!) . Anywho... It was my first time seeing both bands. I waited patiently after the show and talked to John Reis for a bit and got him to sign a copy of the poster for me. We chatted and he made my day by getting the #GustavKlimt reference! . I was (and still am) a big fan of the #SecessionMovement. #Klimt , #KolomanMoser , and #AlphonseMucha were all members of that group. Look it up! They started one of the first illustration magazines #VerSacrum and often contributed to #Jugend Magazine back at the turn of the century. I "borrowed" the idea from a detail of Klimt's painting "Medicine" which was sadly destroyed by the Nazis back in 1945... I want to revisit that idea again. I also tried to sneak in a bit of the #JackKirby influence by making the clothing flat and graphic. Kinda like his designs of the Sentinels. . Living in LA in the early 2000s was an exciting time for me and I was fortunate enough to be one of the regular "poster guys" for #theTroubadour! I was still trying to figure out how to draw and navigate life in LA and life as a freelancer. I'm surprised I made it this far. And maybe someday I'll be back in LA for good. Or San Diego. Or Santa Ana. I can't make up my mind. . So that's my memory of designing this poster for Hot Snakes! . . Hey, I'll be at #NewYorkComicCon this year!!! An elegant emerald green Art Deco style vase from post-war Bohemia, Czechoslovakia very similar to the work of Kolomon Moser. A little inspiration to start the day: the famous dome of the Secession Building in Vienna. It was built to display and promote the “new” art of the young Secessionists. Widely misunderstood, these artists and architects, such as Gustav Klimt, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Josef Hoffman, Koloman Moser, and the father of them all, Otto Wagner, did not seek to break art and design from all tradition, just from the mindless imitation of past models. They sought to create art and architecture employing the principles and proportions identified in and drawn from Nature, rather than imitating the result that others arrived at using these tools and rules. A radical idea in their era, with the longer lens of history, now clear as a continuation of tradition without being a slave to it.
