“The public’s preference for mainstream Kollywood films raises concerns about the importance of preserving our own cultural identity and fostering a healthy domestic film industry,” Perumal said. “The challenge lies in the prevalence of cheap imitations of mainstream Indian cinema. While this approach might capture some attention, it hinders the development of a unique Malaysian Tamil cinematic identity. We, the smaller group seeking to forge a distinct Malaysian Tamil film identity, believe that genuine success lies in embracing our own stories and perspectives, not in mere imitation.”
— Malaysian Tamil Director, Sun-J Perumal

Regional Music: The Unseen Growth Driver in the Future of Indian Music Industry
The Indian music industry, long dominated by Bollywood and mainstream Hindi music, is undergoing a seismic shift. A powerful yet often overlooked factor in this transformation is the burgeoning popularity of regional music. With India’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape, regional music is emerging as a significant growth driver, reshaping the industry’s dynamics. This article delves into the reasons behind this trend, the opportunities it presents, and what the future holds for regional music in the Indian music industry.
The Rise of Regional Music
India is home to 22 official languages and hundreds of dialects, each with its own rich musical tradition. In the past, regional music often took a backseat to Bollywood and other mainstream genres. However, the digital revolution has democratized access to music, giving regional artists and audiences a platform to connect.
Streaming platforms like Spotify, Gaana, and JioSaavn have significantly contributed to this shift by curating playlists in regional languages like Tamil, Punjabi, Telugu, Marathi, and Bhojpuri. Platforms dedicated to regional content, such as Hoichoi for Bengali music and Hungama Music, also play a pivotal role in promoting local music.
According to recent industry reports, regional music consumption has grown by more than 50% in the past three years, with Tamil, Punjabi, and Telugu music leading the charge. This trend is further fueled by an increasing sense of regional pride among listeners and the accessibility of high-quality production tools for artists.
Why Regional Music is Thriving
Several factors contribute to the rising popularity of regional music:
Digital Accessibility The advent of affordable smartphones and inexpensive data plans has brought millions of Indians online. Regional audiences, particularly from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, now have access to streaming services and social media platforms, where they can discover and share music in their native languages.
Vernacular Content Preference Research shows that audiences are more likely to engage with content in their native language. This is especially true for rural and semi-urban areas, where vernacular music resonates more deeply than Hindi or English songs.
Local Cultural Identity As globalization grows, so does the counter-trend of embracing local identities. Regional music provides a sense of belonging and nostalgia, offering listeners a connection to their roots.
Collaborations with Film Industries South Indian cinema industries like Tollywood (Telugu) and Kollywood (Tamil) have long produced chart-topping music. Songs from regional movies often gain nationwide popularity, further spotlighting regional talent.
Social Media Amplification Platforms like TikTok (now replaced by Indian apps like Moj and Josh), Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts have democratized content creation. Regional songs often go viral, creating stars overnight and bringing regional music into the mainstream consciousness.
Key Players Driving Regional Music
Several artists, composers, and platforms have been instrumental in putting regional music on the map:
Artists: Singers like Sid Sriram (Telugu/Tamil), Gurnam Bhullar (Punjabi), and Avadhoot Gupte (Marathi) have built strong fan bases. Their work blends regional traditions with modern sounds, appealing to a wide demographic.
Platforms: Spotify's regional playlists like "Top Tamil" or "Punjabi 101" have made it easier for users to discover non-Hindi music. YouTube, the most popular platform for music in India, has also amplified regional content through its algorithm-driven recommendations.
Labels and Distributors: Regional music labels such as Lahari Music (Kannada), T-Series Punjabi, and Aditya Music (Telugu) have actively promoted regional songs across digital platforms and collaborated with local artists to produce high-quality content.
Challenges in the Regional Music Landscape
Despite its rapid growth, regional music faces several hurdles:
Funding and Infrastructure Regional artists often lack access to the funding and production infrastructure available to Bollywood counterparts. This limits the scalability of their music.
Piracy Piracy remains a persistent issue in India’s music industry, particularly in regional markets. It deprives artists of fair compensation and affects the overall growth of the industry.
Underrepresentation in National Platforms While regional music has made strides, it is still underrepresented in national award ceremonies, media coverage, and mainstream marketing campaigns.
Language Barrier for National Penetration Although regional music is gaining traction, language differences can limit its appeal to non-native speakers. Efforts to create multilingual versions of songs or promote cross-regional collaborations are still in their infancy.
Opportunities for Growth
The future of regional music in India looks promising, with ample opportunities for growth:
Localized Streaming Services Regional-focused apps like DistroKid India and Reverberation India could emerge as platforms dedicated exclusively to vernacular music.
Brand Partnerships Regional music offers unique branding opportunities. Brands can tap into specific cultural contexts to create hyperlocal marketing campaigns, boosting visibility for artists and their music.
AI-Powered Content Discovery Streaming platforms could leverage AI and machine learning to recommend regional music to a wider audience, breaking language barriers and expanding the reach of local artists.
Cross-Regional Collaborations Collaborative projects between artists from different regions can create a fusion of styles and languages, appealing to a broader demographic.
Global Export of Regional Sounds Just as K-pop has taken the global stage, regional Indian music has the potential to appeal to international audiences. Punjabi music, for instance, has already found a global audience, thanks to its upbeat rhythms and universal appeal.
The Road Ahead
The regional music wave is more than just a trend—it’s a transformation that reflects India’s linguistic and cultural diversity. As streaming platforms continue to grow and artists find new ways to connect with audiences, regional music is poised to become a cornerstone of the Indian music industry.
With the right investment in talent, technology, and marketing, regional music can rival Bollywood in influence and revenue. Its growth will not only diversify the industry but also preserve India’s rich cultural heritage for future generations.
In conclusion, the future of the Indian music industry is bright, and regional music is at the forefront of this evolution. By embracing regional sounds, the industry can achieve new heights while celebrating the nation’s unparalleled diversity.

[ad_1] Paromita Das GG News Bureau New Delhi, 29th October. Joseph Vijay, one of Kollywood’s most beloved stars, recently made waves with his announcement to retire from films and launch his own political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). With a successful film career, a loyal fan base, and a carefully cultivated public persona, Vijay’s entry into politics reflects a pattern in Tamil Nadu where stardom frequently serves as a springboard into governance. However, the political trajectory for actors in Tamil Nadu is as complex as it is glamorous, presenting both unique opportunities and significant challenges. The Legacy of Tamil Cinema in Politics Tamil Nadu has a unique history of film stars transitioning into politics. With predecessors like M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), J. Jayalalithaa, and more recently Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, Vijay’s leap is the latest chapter in this tradition. Film celebrities in Tamil Nadu have often enjoyed an almost divine status among fans. This connection between cinema and politics began decades ago, when MGR established the AIADMK, leveraging his massive popularity and on-screen persona to connect with the masses, and Jayalalithaa later continued his legacy by becoming one of the state’s most powerful leaders. Yet, not every actor who entered politics achieved similar success. The challenge has always been to transition the glamour and fanfare of cinema into meaningful political influence. While the image of the beloved hero can initially capture public attention, lasting political impact requires a strategic understanding of governance, economic policies, and a commitment to addressing the complex issues facing the people. Vijay’s Political Potential The Power of Fan Base and Image Vijay’s popularity, particularly among Tamil youth, is substantial. He commands a loyal fan base that views him as a role model and even a symbol of social justice, as many of his film roles have reflected themes of reform, equality, and empowerment. However, converting fans into voters is not a guaranteed path. While fans admire the actor’s on-screen persona, they also have high expectations when he shifts to the political sphere, demanding not only charisma but also a clear and achievable vision for the state. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and Its Ideology By positioning his party as left-leaning, Vijay aligns with a platform that has historically resonated with the people of Tamil Nadu, a state that has long been influenced by Dravidian and leftist ideologies. However, to distinguish TVK, Vijay will need to offer policies and values that reflect his unique vision for Tamil Nadu, rather than merely echoing traditional Dravidian values. This includes addressing pressing issues such as job creation, education reform, and rural development—areas that will significantly influence his acceptance among Tamil Nadu’s diverse demographics. Timing and Political Climate Vijay’s entry into politics comes at a time when Tamil Nadu’s political landscape is witnessing a generational shift. Current leaders, including M.K. Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin, represent established political legacies, while Vijay aims to introduce a fresh perspective. His timing, just months before the elections, has created a buzz, but it also means that he will need to rapidly consolidate support, build a party infrastructure, and create a viable electoral strategy. The Challenges Ahead From Popularity to Policy For Vijay, the challenge lies in translating his cinematic appeal into actionable policies that resonate with the electorate. Unlike a film role, politics demands continuous engagement, policy formulation, and an understanding of administration. Vijay must prove that his commitment goes beyond a single election cycle, building a party that offers solutions to issues like water scarcity, rural development, and the empowerment of marginalized communities. The Financial and Structural Realities of Political Campaigning Running a political party requires substantial resources.
MGR and Jayalalithaa’s political journeys were supported by established party structures and funds. For Vijay and TVK, the road will be difficult without robust financial backing and an organizational structure. Vijay’s fan base, though large, cannot replace the need for a grassroots political network. Building such a foundation takes years of engagement at the village and town levels, something that Vijay must prioritize to establish TVK as a legitimate contender. Competing with Established Political Dynasties Tamil Nadu’s political scene is dominated by the DMK and AIADMK, two well-established parties with loyal voter bases and powerful networks. Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) serves as a reminder of the difficulties that new political entrants face. Despite his fame and strong ideology, Haasan struggled to make a significant impact in elections due to limited political experience and organizational structure. Vijay will need to carefully strategize to avoid a similar fate. Conclusion: A Star’s Challenge in the Political Arena Vijay’s entry into politics is both an exciting and complex development in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. With a massive following, a carefully constructed public persona, and a desire to serve, Vijay brings with him the promise of a new political chapter. However, success in politics requires more than star power. Vijay must now pivot from the world of scripts and rehearsals to the often harsh realities of governance and public service. As he embarks on this journey, Vijay will face the ultimate test: winning the trust of voters not as a film hero, but as a leader. His ability to sustain his popularity will hinge on his skill in navigating political complexities and delivering tangible results for the people of Tamil Nadu. For Vijay and his fans, this marks the beginning of a new and unpredictable adventure—one where he must step beyond the role of an on-screen hero to establish himself as a committed and competent public servant.   The post Joseph Vijay Enters Tamil Nadu Politics: A New Era or Following the Script? appeared first on Global Governance News- Asia's First Bilingual News portal for Global News and Updates. Vettaiyan Movie Review: A Conflicted Take on Extrajudicial Justice in Tamil Cinema
In Tamil cinema, cops are often shown as bold and action-oriented, using their guns without hesitation. This portrayal has been around for a long time and doesn't seem to be going away. That's why a film like Vettaiyan is important—it challenges this image. Indian cinema needs to rethink how it glorifies police officers, especially when it comes to encounter killings.
However, Vettaiyan has its own issues. The main character, Athiyan (played by Rajinikanth), is a trigger-happy cop who is shown as heroic for far too long, making it hard for the film’s eventual message to truly hit home.
Judge Satyadev (Amitabh Bachchan), who represents the moral side of the story, starts by questioning the idea of calling encounter specialists heroes. Meanwhile, Athiyan doesn’t wait for the law to take its course, believing in quick justice. His reasoning is that "justice delayed is justice denied." But as Judge Satyadev points out, "justice hurried is justice buried."
Vettaiyan struggles to find balance between these two views, leaving the film feeling a bit lost and confused in its message.

Is Tamil superstar Vijay set for a political debut?
Sources close to the actor say he is considering launching a political outfit and contesting the Tamil Nadu polls in 2026
Tumblr media
Kollywood, as the Tamil film industry is called, and politics are inseparable. Tamil cinema superstar Vijay, who has long been speculated to be considering launching a party, is now believed to have made up his mind to test the political waters sooner than later. Sources close to the actor suggest Vijay may launch his outfit after the 2024 Lok Sabha election and, if all goes according to plan, contest the Tamil Nadu polls in 2026.
The All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, an organisation named after the star by his fans and which takes care of Vijay’s social activities, could well be converted into a political party, say sources close to the actor. “The ground is being readied. The fans have been entrusted with specific tasks. We have been collecting information on various aspects and demands of voters and the key issues in each and every area. The timing of the political entry will be announced by Thalapathy (Vijay) alone,” said a senior functionary of the All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, requesting anonymity.
Vijay appears to be keen to attempt the success formula of M.G. Ramachandran, the charismatic actor and philanthropist who became the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. MGR’s fan club had laid a strong foundation for his political success even though he had been in politics for over a decade before launching a party of his own, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam or AIADMK. Vijay’s fan club has been working for the needy in Tamil Nadu.
It was Vijay’s father, director S.A. Chandrasekhar, who initiated Vijay’s political plans in 2009. Once an admirer of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Chandrasekhar has often promoted Vijay as a future CM of Tamil Nadu even though his son had all this while shown reluctance in joining politics.
The hesitation seems to have disappeared now, and not without reasons. Vijay, according to the sources, had been reluctant to enter politics before the previous assembly election (2021) as he strongly felt there was no political vacuum to cash in on by a newcomer. Both the DMK and AIADMK had put up a strong fight in the 2021 election. The AIADMK, despite losing the election, remained a powerful entity under the twin leadership of E.K. Palaniswami and O. Panneerselvam.
However, the situation has changed over the last two years with the divide within the AIADMK growing wider. No other Opposition party, including actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth’s Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), has gained strength from the perceived weakening of the AIADMK. Could this have indicated to Vijay and his think-tank a political opportunity?
Last year, Vijay tested the waters by allowing some members of his fan club to contest the rural local body elections. They won in over 100 seats. The All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam has recently started a massive membership drive.
Some political analysts question Vijay’s chances in Tamil Nadu politics and point out that not every actor who took such a step was successful. Vijay and his fans, though, may disagree. If Vijay indeed takes the political plunge, it will undoubtedly cause a buzz but will also be a path full of challenges, hard work and perseverance.

Kollywood Challenge (x)
4. A character you’d love to be friends with
↪ Hasini from Santhosh Subramaniam. I absolutely love her. Her personality, her childlike personality, her bubbliness. Her carefree nature and her saying what comes to mind as it is. Not to mention her innocence and naivity which got her in a few awkward situations. Maybe it’s because her character nature is a part of me too... Except it’d be one part Hasini, one part Shalini (from Sachein), one part Jennifer (from Kushi), one part Shakti (Alaipayuthey) and one part Priya (from Thiruviliyadal Aarambam).
