Indian police use water cannons, tear gas on rape case protesters
Indian police fired tear gas and water cannons on Tuesday as they clashed with thousands of protesters demanding justice for a doctor who was raped and murdered in Kolkata this month, Indian media reported.
The discovery of the bloodied body of the 31-year-old doctor at a government hospital in the eastern city has sparked anger across the country over the chronic problem of violence against women. Protests began immediately after the tragedy and were joined by thousands of health workers across the country. Demonstrators also trashed the emergency room at the hospital where the victim worked, demanding protection and a fair investigation.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Representatives of medical unions and also student organisations are participating in the demonstration. They shouted slogans and clashed with police who wielded batons in an attempt to disperse the crowd.
College student Namita Ghosh, who took part in the protest, told AFP that the crowd had intended to “peacefully protest” before the baton attack.
At least 100 protesters “have been arrested on charges of creating violence,” a senior police official told AFP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media.
Protesters demand protection
Numerous protests in Kolkata sparked by the crime turned into unruly political rallies, with police clashing with demonstrators from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) angered by the state government.
Doctors’ associations in many cities went on strike in the wake of the killing and stopped non-essential services, but medics have since returned to work. One person has been detained in connection with the offence.
The heinous nature of the attack has prompted comparisons with the horrific gang rape and murder of a young woman on a bus in Delhi in 2012.
The incident sparked widespread outrage in a country where sexual violence against women is endemic, with an average of about 90 rapes a day in 2022 in a country of 1.4 billion people.

Hi I remember you once posted about a march for Palestine in Kolkata. In that sense, I want to ask if it is safe to send esims as an Indian living in India? I am from west Bengal but I am not sure if it will get me in trouble. I don't really have any money or any social resource to back me up. So this is why I was asking.
Hi! Thanks for the question and I really appreciate you wanting to help.
The easiest and safest way is to find someone from Europe or North America to buy it for you and you pay them the money.
You can also buy it through Simly, HolaFly or NOMAD, and select Middle East regional data plan. NOMAD isn't available in India but you can access it through VPN. I don't mean to sound alarmist and as far as I'm aware there hasn't been any arrests based on search histories, but every state is a surveillance state and the central government does have access to your search history through LIM. If you are worried, I'd recommend doing it from a cyber cafe that you usually don't visit. Here is a guide if you want to go ahead with it.
Here and here are some other ways you can help.
#🦋#message me if you have any other questions#protests are pretty safe though if you want to join one and both west bengal police and kolkata police has been supportive about it so far#and if you still want to help financially both medical aid and pcrf are still accepting donations and they are available in india now#i donated to medical aid myself and the government did send aid to gaza and it falls under humanitarian aid#so that should be okay

Parents Of Kolkata Doctor Claim Cops Offered Them Money After Murder
The parents of the Kolkata doctor who was brutally raped and murdered last month have alleged that the police initially to suppress the case. The incident took place while the doctor was on night shift and has led to massive protests across the state, demanding swift action.
The parents of the 31-year-old joined the protest at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where their daughter's body was found on August 9, and accused the police of allegedly trying to close the case without a thorough investigation.
"The police, from the very beginning, tried to hush up the case. We were not allowed to see the body and had to wait at the police station while the body was taken for post-mortem examinations," the father said while addressing the protesters.
"Later, when the body was handed over to us, a senior police official offered us money, which we immediately declined," he added.
The parents said that are joining the protest to support the junior doctors fighting for justice for their daughter.
Kolkata Police has come under strong criticism from the Opposition as well as citizens for its handling of the sensitive case. Questions have been raised on how the accused Sanjoy Roy had unfettered access to every corner of the state-run hospital at all times of the day. Some reports have also said he would illegally arrange hospital beds and other facilities for patients in exchange for money.
Slogans targeting cops and reminding them that they have daughters at home too have been doing the rounds on social media and finding a place on placards carried by protesters during street marches.
Amid outrage, the Calcutta High Court ordered that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). On Monday, the CBI arrested the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr Sandip Ghosh, in connection with alleged financial misconduct at the establishment.
The West Bengal Assembly this week also passed an anti-rape bill seeking capital punishment for rape convicts if their actions result in the victim's death or leave her in a vegetative state.

Indian Supreme Court orders task force to ensure doctors’ safety
India’s Supreme Court has set up a national task force of doctors to advise on the safety of medical professionals, days after the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor sparked outrage and nationwide protests, Indian media reported.
The assault in the eastern city of Kolkata on August 9 sparked nationwide protests, with people demanding justice for the victim and more safety for women in hospitals, and doctors at several places refusing to admit non-emergency patients.
A volunteer policeman was arrested for the crime, and federal police took over the investigation. Public anger and protests over violence against women are reminiscent of events following the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student on a bus in New Delhi in 2012.
The Supreme Court, which took up the case on its own, directed the federal police to submit a progress report on the investigation on Thursday.
It also ordered the deployment of federal paramilitary forces to the hospital where the crime took place to ensure the safety of women doctors who complained that they did not feel safe after the crime and the ransacking of the hospital by unidentified men.
The court asked the task force to consider sweeping reforms, including security at medical facilities, separate rest rooms for female staff, adequate lighting within the hospital, video surveillance and the creation of teams of officers to conduct quarterly security checks.
Sexual violence against women is a widespread problem in India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the police registered 31,516 reports of rape in 2022, a 20 per cent increase from 2021.
