Something I started wondering about while watching Tokyo Mew Mew New and finishing up Sailor Moon (the manga) is if magical girl shows still do the mysterious protector trope.

I've only read and watched a handful of magical girl shows (I plan on getting to more, but there's only so much time in a week, let alone a year), and can't really think of more recent examples. (If anyone knows of any, I'm happy to be corrected on this.)

It just came to mind because I can still see some potential in the trope. I don't even think it has to be a guy, like how Sailor Moon or Tokyo Mew Mew do it. It could be a girl, too, as far as I'm concerned. For example, Masaya's worrying about Ichigo after he finds out she's Mew Ichigo (which somehow took longer than it should have, but that is how the genre works so whatever) isn't too different from, say, Miku worrying about Hibiki in Symphogear.

I don't know, just something that came to mind recently.

EDIT: I have been informed in replies that PreCure has done this. I had a feeling it was somewhere in that franchise.
