I haven’t had a real New Year’s resolution in years but I think I’m vaguely coming up with things I want to do

Save more money

I want to budget better so I’m spending less and I want to be able to transfer more money to my US account and really build up my savings. Right now, I’m at an extreme where I have everything in my Japanese account but nothing in my US account or vice versa. I want to find the sweet spot.

Travel more

Seems like it contradicts the first point! But one of the reasons why I want to save more money is so I can travel easier, especially in the summer.

Might not do all of these things next year per se because of my first resolution but I want to knock out a chunk!

I confess that a big reason why I haven’t traveled as much as I’d like is because I’ve never really had to plan my own trips entirely by myself. I was also really unused to relying on public transportation since I always drove myself in the US. I’m a lot more comfortable using trains and buses now and I know enough Japanese to figure out things if I get lost. The only way to get used to planning my own trips is to actually start planning trips! I also realized that another thing holding me back is that, in the US, I had such a close network of friends, I always had someone traveling with me whereas, in Japan, I have good friends but they all have their own plans so the idea of traveling alone and doing everything by myself was overwhelming. I shouldn’t hold myself back because of others (or the lack of).

I think my friend is going to visit me in Kanazawa in the spring so I won’t really be traveling then besides a very short trip to Osaka to do some things for me. I vaguely agreed to go on a road trip to *somewhere* outside Ishikawa with some friends. But I’ll have a lot of nenkyuu (and cultural furlough!) saved up by the time summer rolls around so I’m going to figure something out. I know I’m going to have at least ten days I really need to use before the next contracting year starts. I might be visiting my family over the summer so that’ll work out great if I do! If I don’t visit, I’m going to really want to take advantage of my hopeful savings for a nice long trip.

Get more involved

My school is really chill so I know I have more free time than some other JETs in my area. So I want to get involved more with planning things. I’m going to shoot for area leader or AJET. 

Japanese more

I understand more than I think. I need to become more confident and more comfortable and that won’t happen if I study more and actually practice using it

DA PUMP - USA Parody: MLP

There was a time when I used to follow My Little Pony, but I dropped out of it at some point and only refollowed it recently as it was part of a personal project of mine. As I stated in my Taking Stock post at the end of last year, I never really got involved in the fandom, so if this is going to be my only contribution, let this be it.

The finale of the Friendship is Magic series premiered recently, so to show my appreciation, I wrote an MLP-themed parody of DA PUMP’s USA. I initially wrote it at the start of this year as a tie-in to my personal project, with some anniversary references given that the franchise is reaching its fortieth year, but I rewrote the second verse and chorus recently to remove the tokusatsu references. I kept some lines from the original because they suited the anniversary theme and the themes of the series. Of course, the parody lyrics are meant to match the rhythm of the original song lyrics (to the best of my ability), so I’m attaching the full audio of the original song below.

Frankly, I find it surprising that nobody has thought of this yet given that the song went viral for a time. If anyone manages to make something inspired from this, I’d love to know about it.
