quill notes - got this request when i was having a hard time out of the country and it was certainly something to look forward too!

The scene where Mitsuri's parents secretly watch her as she dyes her hair black in order to look like an acceptable bride is a scene I think about a lot.

The look of sheer pain and sadness on their faces feels like a punch in the gut to me, mainly because I've never encountered any parent who actually cares that much about their child. In fact, I nearly cried when I first saw that scene.

Where I live, first impressions are everything. If you mess up in front of others, you are seen as a disappointment and parents can go to almost any length to make their children seem like perfect angels in public, going as far as pressuring them to hide their true self and craft a more palatable persona for others to interact with.

Mitsuri's parents are the opposite of this. They love her for who she is and are never seen telling her to 'act like a lady,' which is amazing considering the time KNY takes place in. They are anguished instead of thrilled when they see Mitsuri trying to cover up her real personality.

Seeing parents truly love their child for who they are will never feel boring or overdone for me, considering how rare it is in real life.

Orphans in the Demon Slayer Universe

So we know that the majority of the characters in KNY are orphaned due to demons, but for characters like Tanjirou we know exactly what happened to him following his parents' deaths.

Then we have characters like Genya, who, after his mother was killed and his brother abandoned him, it's left a complete mystery as to what happened to him in the years between that and him joining the Demon slayer corps.

HOWEVER, based on some research I did (which I will link some of the websites I used at the bottom) I can make some guesses at what kind of life Genya likely had between then and now.

Orphans, known as Koji (孤児) were regarded in a very negative light. Orphanages were often crowded and overfull at the time and there was very little interest in building more, meaning there were quite a few children that "fell through the cracks" so to speak. We don't know of any other relatives Genya could have gone to stay with, though it is certainly a possibility, it's one I highly doubt.

So, more than likely, Genya was living forgotten on the streets, something I'd like to explore more in one of my fics.

Many times, orphans left on the streets were rounded up by police and thrown into prison just to get them off the street. Meaning it's highly likely Genya has been in and out of prison and other shelters for a majority of his life. It's even possible he was rounded up and sold for labor purposes at some point only to escape. Many Koji were regarded as furoji, or juvenile vagrants/delinquents, which, fits Genya's overall appearance as the stereotypical "delinquent" type.

The first time we see Genya he's filthy even before starting final selection and his temper is extremely short. In one winged butterfly we get this from Genya: "Genya knew only too well those eyes filled with hatred, impatience, annoyance, and an unfathomable anger and sadness. They had once been his own eyes."

We can only make assumptions about where Genya was and what he was doing before Final Selection but historical context and in show context all serve to paint a truly heartbreaking picture.

Which brings me to the Tokito twins and this question that plagues me: what alternative life did they have ahead of them?

From what I could tell, the Tokito twins were actually doing pretty well for themselves. They were continuing their father's profession and making enough money off that to feed themselves, they had a house and a nearby water source. Were it not for that demon, they may have had a decent life ahead of them given their tragic circumstances.

I will say, I used all this research for fandom purposes, but these were the real experiences of real people and it's truly horrifying to see what the people of the past and, in some cases, today have to live through. In this AU, Nezuko and Sabito would butt heads a lot. You'll always hear them bicker when they are together. Nezuko would always bring up Sabito's height because she knows he's sensitive about it lmao.

Misc Sabito aus bc I am totally normal and don't constantly spin aus in my brain like a wind turbine . -Upper Rank 5? Demon au? Dunno how or why hes there but I imagine it's during the infinity castle arc. Since upper 6 and upper 4 get replaced, why not bridge the gap? Yeah thats It I just wanted to make a demon design :thumbsup: who needs plot that make sense when you can have rule of cool. and also fun -Personal Sabito lives au so I can spin him around on a pencil end . Probably going to draw more for this one bc i've been concocting. Giyuu is his Tsuguko even if Sabito says he may as well be the actual Water Hashira instead of him... While Giyuu says he could never be the Water Hashira. Rest the souls of anyone who gets in between bickering matches from them about that topic. I have a comic in mind for how and why this timeline splits off from the official story so I'll probably sketch that out when I get the time.

Blood drunk and blissful, Giyuu must not realize the danger he was in. Kyojuro couldn’t bear the thought. He practically ripped his hand away from Giyuu’s waist, realizing he’d drawn blood, and brought it back up to his jaw instead, smearing the blood onto Giyuu’s cheek. When he spoke his voice was raw and intense. He was so in love with Giyuu it made him angry.

“Can I ask you something, Giyuu?” Giyuu simply looked at him. “Do I frighten you?”

Giyuu raised an eyebrow, surprised both at his words and the intensity with which he murmured them. “What?”

“I should.” Kyojuro said. He was close enough now to feel the breaths coming steady from Giyuu’s parted, glistening lips against his own. “Haven’t you thought of what I could do to you?” Don’t you understand the danger you’re in? Don’t you see why I could never love you?

With a start, Kyojuro realized Giyuu’s gaze had wandered from his eyes down to his lips, his glistening teeth, his pointed tongue. As if he’d only just remembered he was in the arms of a demon. “Yes.” Giyuu admitted. “But I’m not frightened. Are you?”

Kyojuro laughed once, derisively. “Of course not.”

“Then why are you trembling?”
