chavezsightings they’re so cute together. 🥺💗
These pics were sent in by a couple of fans that saw them yesterday. They went on their honeymoon a couple of days ago. The fans wrote and I quote:
“They’re literally so sweet. We didn’t want to interrupt them but they waved at us and started talking to us so we took a pic together and then left them alone. I’m not going to post the pic bc I look like trash but I love them together <3“
“My friend and I honestly couldn’t believe it when we saw them at the same restaurant we were at. They were so nice and it was amazing to talk to them and congratulate them on their marriage and newest projects. They’re so supportive of each other and the way they look at each other is literally out of a romcom. They’re definitely soulmates.”
(y/n)andnick would it be weird to say that I can’t wait to see their kids?

can't take the home out of oklahoma - iiii. (k.c.)
a/n: dear God the behemoth of the crossover fic is finally finished. please remember to be kind in my comments, but of course i'd love to hear what everyone thought :). if you're new here, you can check out the other three parts here
summary: Two years after leaving California, Tyler hears from Jake, asking him to come to his engagement party. With an offer of putting the whole crew up in a hotel for two nights and an off-season lull, Tyler accepts. Two years after leaving California, you finally have to confront Javy.
warnings: background iceman and hangster, happy ending, alcohol, swearing, please remember we are all the villains in someone's story thank you
word count: 13.2k
Tumblr media
“So, I was thinking-”
“Dangerous thing.” Kate mutters around a bite of waffle, prompting a fit of giggling from the two of you as Tyler narrows his eyes.
“-I was thinking, instead of heading out to Arkansas straight after the end of the season, we take a road trip.”
“Where you thinking T?” Boone asks as you pick up your coffee cup.
“San Diego, California.”
You freeze, eyes flickering over to the blonde over the rim of your coffee cup, thankful you hadn’t taken a sip of the hot liquid yet.
“What the hell, Owens?” You ask tersely, setting the mug down harder than you intend to, the brown liquid sloshing over the side.
Tyler is pointedly avoiding your look as he sighs, shoulders deflating. “Look, my brother called. He- He’s getting married.”
Your eyebrows shoot up. “To Bradley?”
He nods, confirming. “Anyways, they’re having an engagement party out at Brad’s godfather’s. Jake’s invited us, all of us. Offered to put us all up in a hotel for two nights. I was uh- thinking about going.”
“I think I’ll sit this out.” You say quietly, pushing your chair out.
“Yeah, I ain’t so sure it’s the best idea to throw her into all of that.” Dani says, Lilly nodding alongside her.
The girls had been told the story of your fiery departure from your hometown one night this past season, motel beds pushed together, wine drunk and cheap pizza forgotten. You’d told Dexter a week later, while you remarked on your ex-boyfriend’s love for a Louisiana crab boil, after you all had crossed into Louisiana to follow a storm.
“Jake asked specifically about you.” Tyler admits quietly.
You sigh, glancing up at the ceiling. “I don’t think the rest of them care to see me.”
“We’ll make it work, okay? I ain’t gonna let anybody come at you.” Tyler pleads and you sigh again.
You look at him for a moment but that’s all you need. It’s clear that Jake reaching out, asking him to come to this monumental event, means a great deal to him and you know as his family, it’s only right to step up to the plate for Tyler, no matter how uncomfortable it might make you.
You know Tyler would do the same for you in a heartbeat.
“Okay, T.  I’ll go with you guys.”
His grin is splitting as Boone whoops, already chattering about the beach.
“I ain’t promising to be nice to them.”
Your words don’t even phase Tyler.
“Wouldn’t even dreaming of asking that of you, kid.”
-
The blue water sparkles as you peer out the window, the golden sunlight making it shine.
“Jesus, I forget how blue it is.” You whisper to yourself as you take in downtown.
The skyscrapers peer down back at you, the boats in the bay dotted across the docks. In the distance, you can see the outlines figures of the USS Midway and the Star of India.
“How you feeling?”
You shake your head, looking back at Kate. “It’s weird, kind of. Disorientating. I remember the first time I came home from college, it’s kind of like that. It all looks the same but the world kept turning after you left. Life kept going even though you’re not there to witness it.”
She reaches out to squeeze your hand from the back of the truck. “I get what you mean.”
Tyler glances at the two of you from his position in the drivers seat. The group had elected to take the van and your car, the SUV you’d bought last winter after you’d gotten sick of sharing Kate’s own storm chasing truck.
Tyler’s red truck and Kate’s pickup had just not suited themselves to a cross country road-trip, which led you and Kate to driving most of the way. Tyler had finally corralled you into giving him the keys, under the condition you would sit passenger seat and give him directions.
“Hey T, can we stop and get food before this thing?”
Boone’s voice crackles over the radio and Tyler grabs it. You hadn’t really needed a radio of your own, but Boone and Tyler had insisted, outfitted the whole thing themselves. It sort of made you feel like a kid again, shouting across the room with your siblings in lieu of having walkie talkies while you played — everything followed with an OVER.
“I think they’re gonna feed us there Booney.”
“Tyler, I am a starved woman. You rushed us out of breakfast this morning and we’ve been up before the sun was. It’s almost three in the afternoon and California already said we’ve got a decent drive across the city to get to this place. We’re stopping.” Dani’s voices comes through and Kate lets out a laugh from her seat.
“Know any good places California?”
You light up at Boone’s question, reaching for the radio but Tyler holds it just out of reach.
“If you suggest In-N-Out one more time, I will drive this car into the ocean, so help me God.”
-
Niall Horan’s voice floats softly through the speakers as the car creaks to a stop in front of a familiar house.
Your stomach flips as the barbecue from a locally owned joint near your Mom’s threatens to resurface. You distantly recall telling the group you’d been friends with the owners daughter in high school in a sad attempt to drown out Boone’s loud voice saying it would never be as good as Cathy’s.
“You good California?” Javi asks and you startle, not even having realized you’d pulled yourself from the car. “You’re looking a little queasy there.”
“Nerves.” You breathe and Kate takes your hand, squeezing it.
“Thought you said they were nice.” Lilly says.
“They are.” Just not to me.
“This is quite the affair.” Dexter comments, glancing around the street as you walk up the road. “There’s hardly any spaces left.”
“Bradley’s family is big.” You blurt out. “Lots of retired pilots who are probably thrilled to see their Baby Goose get married. Lots of friends from the service too I’m guessing.”
“I wouldn’t want to be footing the bill for that wedding.” Dani whistles.
The group begins to chatter and you wince, feeling your stomach roll as you step onto the grass.
“You got this.” Kate whispers as you follow Tyler to the front porch. Tyler reaches out to press the doorbell, only to pull back at the last second.
You raise your eyebrows. You don’t think you’ve seen the Tyler Owens cower back down from anything, much less a doorbell separating him from his twin.
“You do it.” He says to you, stepping back.
“Me do it?” You ask incredulously. “You want to be kicked out before we ever step foot inside?”
“I’ll do it.” Kate volunteers. She rings the doorbell, a short buzz followed by the sound of an I got it Mom! from somewhere inside behind the closed door.
The door opens a few minutes later, revealing the now-taller daughter of Penny Benjamin. She blinks at the rag-tag crew. “Can I help you?”
“Hi. I’m Kate and this is Tyler, we’re here for-“ Kate cuts herself off under the rather impressive stare of Amelia. Kate tugs on your arm, pulling you into view. “Here, you talk to the scary teenager.”
“Hi Amelia.” You say softly.
Amelia’s face lights up at the sight of you, exclaiming your name, drawing the attention of Tom as he rounds the corner to see who was at the door. Tom appears over her shoulder, nudging the girl back inside the house.
“Tell Jake his brother’s here!” Tom calls after her before turning his attention back to your crew. “You must be Tyler and his crew. Jake mentioned that you guys would be stopping by. They’re all out in the back playing dogfight football.”
Dogfight football? Tyler mouths to you as you all step inside the foyer. You shrug at his confused look.
Long story you mouth back.
“Anyways, I’m Tom, I’m one of Brad’s godfathers. I can take you all out to the back to meet the group?”
You let your friends filter in front of you, hanging by the entrance to the kitchen and living room area.
-
“I’m just gonna…” You mutter, letting your friends file out the glass door after Amelia and Tom. Penny gives you an unimpressed look from where she catches sight of you at the kitchen island and you give a sheepish shrug, feeling your cheeks heat up. “Selfish self-perseveration, sue me.”
Pete glances up at you from one of the cabinets at the sound of your voice, lighting up as he does. “Well kid, I do have to say we never expected to see you again.” He holds out his arms and you grin, taking the invitation for a hug.
If there was anything you’d learned about Pete Mitchell in the two and a half years you’d spent around his pilots, was that he offered Dad hugs to anyone at any chance he got. And boy, were they some of the safest hugs you’d ever had.
“Hi Pete.” You say into his shoulder as he squeezes you.
He pulls back, studying you. His thumb ghosts over a new scar on your cheek (thanks to an ill-timed rocket from Boone) and taking in the new piercings. “You look good kid.”
“Thanks.” You breathe, unable to stop the genuine smile at earning his approval.
His hand rests on your shoulder, guiding you farther into the kitchen. “Nick and Carole are outside with Coyote’s Dad and brother getting all the fixings grilled up. Do you want anything to drink?”
You pause, stopping next to Javy’s Mom Lydia. You swallow, unsure of how she’ll react to you as you tell Pete you don’t want anything. He nods, grabbing his glass and nudging Penny towards the back patio after her daughter.
“Hi Lydia.” You say softly. She studies you for a moment before pulling you into a tight hug. You melt into her touch, knowing you had accepted you may never get it again.
You think of all the times you’d gotten the same hug from her, the innate soft care and compassion the woman had offered you, the same one she’d passed down to her son.
You pull back, smiling at Javy’s sister-in-law (it seems like James had finally put a ring on it) and the little boy she holds in her arms. “Hi Scarlet.”
The girl gives you a big grin. “How you doing?”
“I’m good.” You answer. “Yeah, I’ve been good.”
She smiles. “Good to hear.” She glances over Lydia’s shoulder. “Would you want to hold baby Jameson here for a minute while Dia and I go grab something from outside?”
Your eyes grow wide. “You want me to hold your baby?”
She shrugs. “I trusted you enough back then, I doubt I can’t trust you now.”
You swallow, nodding. “Yeah, yeah of course.” You take the boy gingerly from her arms as he grins up real big at you. The boy only has two teeth but it looks like the nub of a third is growing in. “You and James make really cute babies.”
“I know.” She says smugly, before heading outside with Lydia.
You bounce the baby in your arms gently, cooing at him softly.
“I sort of feel like I’m watching some alternate version of my future right now.” You gasp, whipping towards the sound of the voice.
Leaning up against the doorjamb is Javy.
The same Javy you’d fallen in love with all those years ago, a fond and yet pained smile on his face as he sticks his hands in his pockets.
“Self preservation doesn’t work if you’re not outside with all your friends.” You breathe out as Jameson starts making grabby hands for his uncle. Javy walks towards the boy, letting him take his finger. It quickly becomes his new favorite chew toy as he shrugs.
You snort as Javy smiles down at the kid. “Wanted to change. Scarlet knew I was in here so now I’m kinda figuring she left him here with you so we’d have to be civil.” You swallow, all humor leaving you as your eyes dart around the kitchen.
In all the years you’d been gone, the Mitchell-Kazansky house hadn’t changed all that much. Maybe there were a few more pictures on the fridge, a coupon for a new pizza place, new throw pillows on the same worn couch, but the small beach front property that was inherently them had remained the same.
“I don’t- I never expected- How are you here?” Javy asks, finally landing on words after a minute of silence and restarted attempts.
“Jake’s brother.” You say quietly. “I’ve been working with Tyler in Oklahoma.”
Javy reels back, Jameson letting go of his finger as he does. The toddler is quick to shift his attention to your hair, tugging on it. You wince. “Okay, I probably deserve this.” You mutter after a particularly hard yank from the toddler’s fist.
Javy snorts, and you think it surprises him as much as it does you as a shy, goofy smile flickers on his face. “In another life, you were probably his auntie.”
The words are meant to be light-hearted but they’re like an iron punch as the breath gets knocked clean from your lungs.
“Javy-“
“Sorry, that wasn’t funny.” He dismisses as he crosses his arms. “So- Oklahoma huh? You liking it? The countryside is the last place I expected you to end up but you, uh- you look like you’re doing well.”
You swallow around the lump that’s growing in your throat at the grief you’re having to confront earlier than you had anticipated.
“I- Yeah, I like it out there. I’m good. Happy.”
“I’m actually uh, not surprised to hear it. That you’re in Oklahoma. Just surprised at finally getting the confirmation.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, about a year ago, Fanboy had one of their streams on. He was just a casual fan, you know, background noise. The camera couldn’t have been on you for more than thirty seconds but I swore it was you. I made him go back and replay it a hundred times, I pulled up a hundred examples from other videos on the channel. The team was so convinced I was starting to lose it that Fanboy got banned from playing those streams anymore. Your hair was shorter in that first video, but I just- I knew it was you.”
You hum, thinking to yourself. You’d appeared in the background of streams and edited videos countless times, but there had only been one haircut in two years. “It must’ve been after the rocket incident.”
His eyes go wide. “The rocket incident?”
“Boone still feels bad and Ty won’t let anyone really bring it up because it makes his blood pressure rise but imagine my surprise when I’m fiddling with something on top on the truck and Boone leans over on the console and accidentally sets off a rocket.”
“That would only happen to you.”
You snort. “I know. Most of the hair on one side was singed off anyways so I took the kitchen shears we have and chopped it all off in the back of the RV after we left urgent care.”
A beat passes as he drums his fingers against the countertop. “Hey, how long are you in town for?”
“We’re supposed to leave sometime tomorrow, we’re gonna stop off in Vegas. Why?”
“I was gonna see if you wanted to stop by the house. I’ve still got, actually quite a lot of your stuff. Like keepsakes and stuff your Mom tried to get rid of. If you wanted to swing by on your way out and pick through it.”
You nod. “Yeah, I should be able to fit that in.” You reach a hand out, nudging his shoulder. “Hey, how was Bob and Sophia’s wedding?”
“The kind of classy country you can only imagine. It was so them.”
“Did you cry?” You tease and he ducks his head.
“Maybe shed a tear or two.”
“Hey, how’s your Mom?” You ask softly.
You remember all too well Javy getting that phone call.
Four days before you were meant to defend your Masters thesis, Javy had gotten a call from his Mom, telling him that she had been diagnosed with DCIS — breast cancer.
It had been non-invasive, thankfully, and after a quickly scheduled surgery, Lydia had expected to have a full recovery.
Still — it had been a terrifying few weeks for Javy and you’d written out and deleted a hundred text messages to him on each anniversary of the diagnosis.
“She’s good.” He says softly. “Still no signs of a return. Thanks for asking.”
You nod. “I think about her a lot. And you, you know. How you all are doing. If she’s healthy, if you’re safe.”
His eyes shine with a feeling you can’t quite name, but can describe only as a response to hearing words he never thought he’d hear but mean more to him then he’ll ever admit.
“I think about you too. If you’re happy, if you’re happier than you were with me. If you found what it was you had been searching for.” He shakes his head, clearing your throat. “Grieving someone who was still alive-“ He lets out a low whistle.
“I’m sorry.” You whisper. You know he hears you but he doesn’t say anything, letting the two of you exist in silence as baby Jameson babbles nonsensically.
“I can’t help but ask — you dating anyone?”
The questions feels so stilted as you swallow. You knew he was trying to play at some cool nonchalance but he missed by a mile; it was obvious your answer meant a great deal to him. “I am.” He raises his eyebrows, clearly waiting for more information. “I have a girlfriend.”
“What’s this girlfriend’s name?”
You shake your head. “Don’t think it’s appropriate to bring her into this.”
He sighs, letting his weight rest against the kitchen island. “I guess that’s fair. You were always more mature than me about stuff.”
The two of you sit in an awkward silence for a few minutes, the hollers of his friends from the back patio coming closer. You have a hundred questions for him and he probably has a thousand more for you but you both know you can’t ask them in this moment. His team must have come up off the beach and would probably be headed inside soon. His eyes flicker towards the back door, probably making the same assumptions as you.
“Hey, do- do you think we could talk sometime tonight?” Your eyes flicker over to him, seeing the pain in them so clear. It feels unnatural to not reach out and smooth out the lines in between his eyebrows. “Now’s not the time but I- uh-“ He cuts himself off, shaking his head.
You nod. “Yeah, we can. Just- later, okay?”
You owed him closure. After the way you’d left, with the way you’d burned him, you owed him that at the very least.
Kate would understand.
The backdoor slides open, the pilots shuffling in. Behind them, you can see the Wranglers, save for Kate and Tyler, take hesitant seats on the couches. It looks like Dexter’s still outside.
“Holy shit!” Omaha yells, sliding his sunglasses up. The pilots turn, a bunch of oohs being tossed up.
“Does anybody else get the weird feeling we walked into some weird alternate timeline where her and Coyote got married and had kids?” Payback asks and Javy lets out a low groan.
“Aliens.” Fanboy breathes out and his pilot tosses him a strange look.
“It’s like seeing a ghost.” Natasha comments.
“Yeah, a really bitchy ghost.” Omaha adds and you turn sharply, plopping the toddler into his uncle’s arms.
“Would you look at that, some things really do never change. I still really hate your friends.”
“Can I have a hug?” Jake blurts out, silencing his friends.
You raise an eyebrow as you give him a once-over. “Um, I guess. If you put a shirt on first.”
Mickey hits his pilot as Jake disappears around the corner. “My alien theory isn’t so weird now, is it?”
Payback winces, rubbing his stomach where Mickey had smacked him. “Nice to see you too Mickey.” You say, rounding the kitchen island.
The boy gives you a nervous smile. It’s an odd look on the boy who’d always greeted you with a wide grin, home-cooked food, and a picture of his new Lego set. It’s an odd look for the kid who’d probably been your favorite of Javy’s friends, and definitely the closest to you, so long as no one said that in front of Bradley. (Bradley Bradshaw had taken it upon himself to name his role in your life as unintentional big brother). “Hey.”
Jake reappears, having tugged one of Bradley’s old Top Gun shirts over his head. “Hi.” He says softly, stopping in front of you. “Can I have a hug now?”
You sigh. “Fine, I guess.”
You’re not sure what you’re expecting from Jake (a hug certainly wasn’t on the table) but his hug is tight, borderline painful as you hesitantly and awkwardly wrap your arms around his much larger and taller frame. You step back as someone clears their throat. Jake lets you go willingly as Boone reaches out for your wrist, tugging you to sit down in between him and Dani.
Jake turns, facing the person who’s just walked into the house.
“Knock knock.” She says and your head turns, catching sight of Lainey’s blond hair. Javi reaches around Boone, nudging your back, reminding you to breathe as Jake’s face lights up. “Wait, there’s two of you?”
“Lainey! Didn’t think you’d make it! Yeah, uh, this is my twin brother Tyler. We, uh don’t talk much.”
“Oh, we know.” You say under your breath, only loud enough for your friends to hear, and Boone spits out a laugh, Javi having to cough into his fist to cover up his own laughter.
Tyler snaps, eyes narrowing, turning to you. “I thought you’d agreed to being on your best behavior.”
“I didn’t say anything!” You defend, which elicits a loud laugh from Dani as Lilly throws out a “Stop being so hard on her T!”
Tyler huffs, his hands fall to his waist and you have to bite back a giggle that eventually falls out anyways when you see Kate doing the same thing.
“You’re such a Dad, T.” You say through a laugh, shaking your head which elicits laughter from the whole group.
Lainey turns as you talk, face softening. “I didn’t think any of us would ever see you again. Where you’ve been?”
“Oklahoma!” Javy shouts from across the kitchen. It sends his friends into an uproar, reeling from the fact.
“See, my aliens theory is looking more and more true!”
-
Kate doesn’t want to admit that her stomach drops at the sight of your ex quietly slipping out the door after you but she knows it’s warranted given the way all his friends notice.
“What’re the odds she gives Javy another chance?” Jake’s fiancé asks Jake. Jake lets out some discontented noise from the back of his throat before pushing himself off his seat on the floor and meandering into the kitchen.
“I will put money on her coming back. I’m so Team Javy, you know this.” One of the other pilots (Fanboy, her brain recalls).
“I’m team her staying in Oklahoma with her girlfriend. She’s earned that quiet life.” One of the girlfriends (Kaycee, she’s dating Phoenix, you’d run through all the possible attendees with her and Tyler in the car this morning in the quiet calm, dawn barely peaking over the horizon) pipes up with.
“Of course you’re on her side.” One of the others says. “You always liked her more than the rest of us.”
Kaycee’s eyes slide up to the man. “Well yeah, Payback, I was the one consoling at her at every group event when Hangman came down on her and made her feel unwanted. So of fucking course I don’t want her to get back together with the guy
whose friends made her feel like shit.”
“You take that too seriously, K. We were obviously just fooling around, not our fault she’s too sensitive.”
The girl’s eyes narrow at the man. “Omaha, so help me-“
“She’s not your piece of meat to fight over!” Dani finally bursts. The in-fighting stops abruptly as the attention turns to them. “I’m just saying- if she’s happy, can’t you just leave her be? She’s a person, not some object for y’all to fight about.”
The group all but forgets Dani even said anything when the one with the glasses turns back to Bradley. “You really think she’ll take Javy back?”
“A hundred percent. You remember how she used to look at him. And he was ass over teacups for her. Remember that year she bought him the Saints jersey with his last name on the back and he near lost his mind the first time she stole it to wear?”
“Dude, he wasn’t half as bad dating as he was before. Remember the first time he brought her to the Hard Deck and he insisted he buy every drink for her?” Mickey chimes in.
“I remember when they came to the house for the first time to watch a movie and Mickey kept teasing her about not doing anything on the couch, I thought Coyote was gonna drown Mick in the pool. He was so desperate to impress her and yelled at us for potentially making it so she never talked to him again.” Bob adds through a laugh. “Which she totally did, she fucking loved him from the first time they matched. Remember how his hands used to start sweating cause he got so nervous around her?”
She glances at Javi and Boone next to her, glad to see her own unease is mirrored on their faces. Lilly’s reminder from earlier resurfaces in her mind as she plays with tab on her soda can.
She loves you Kate. She wouldn’t go anywhere in the world you ain’t.
“Coyote’s always had a way with words around her. He’ll say the right thing, tell her he’ll miss her, and she’ll come back just like she was always meant to.” Phoenix comments and she swallows, looking down at her jeans.
Javi and Boone both stand up next to her, a whispered conversation happening she doesn’t care to try and hear as their exit goes unnoticed. The discomfort and unease in her stomach grows, feeling her whole world tilt at the thought that someone may say something to make you realize you’d been wrong to come to Oklahoma, wrong to love her, and that you’d go back to the place you had belonged this whole time.
She catches Tyler’s eye, a stormy look growing on his face.
I don’t like this, it says.
She didn’t either.
-
“See, I’d ask if you’re just taking a breather, but I know you, so you’re definitely hiding.”
Your eyes shoot up at Javy as he gently shuts the front door to the house, moving to sit down on the porch swing across from where you’re resting your weight on the porch railing.
“Yeah, well, when they start eating my food straight from my hands I think I have to bow out.”
He grins at the memory.
Just half an hour ago, you’d been trying to shove Boone off of you as he attempted to take a bite of your burger, crowded up into Lilly and Dani’s space more than they probably ever wanted you to be. Javi had leaned over, taking a huge bite of burger as it had been sitting in your hand farthest away from Boone’s reach and you’d frozen in shock when you’d seen what he’d done out of your periphery.
Dexter had tried to save face, over the sound of Dani yelling about how foul the move was, by saying that usually the lot of you were much more civilized but Tyler and Kate had immediately refuted it with a unified no, we ain’t. It had been all the encouragement you needed to plop what was left of the burger in Javi’s hand and to disappear outside.
“They seem to really like you. That one, Boone, was telling me we weren’t allowed to have you back. You’re theirs now.”
You sigh, crossing your arms. “They’re- they’re really good to me. They’re family.”
“I’ll admit that’s kind of hard to hear. Rooster and Fanboy kinda seem to be under the impression that you still might come back. Mav too. If I play my cards right.”
You let out another sigh, looking away from him. “Javy, don’t even go there. Please don’t start that with me, cause you aren’t gonna like what I have to say.”
He shifts, bending to lean on his knees as he does his best to catch your eye. “What can I say to fix this? What can I say to convince you to come home?”
“Oklahoma is my home!” You insist, feeling frustration begin to tighten in your chest.
“No the hell it isn’t. How many times did you say your heart belonged here? How many times did you say you were meant for city living by the beach? And now you’re telling me that you live on a farm in the middle of buttfuck nowhere Oklahoma and you just what, love your life? I don’t believe that. Not for a minute.”
A whimper of frustration slips out as your hands come down to scrub your face. “Javy.” You say shakily. “I am happy to have any kind of closure conversation you need to have to find peace and move on. But if this is going to be about you trying to convince me to come back to a life I don’t want anymore, then I will go back inside.” You say, mustering up a calm tone you don’t feel and he reels back as if you’ve hit him.
“I just don’t understand.” He says softly and your shoulders deflate. “I love you. You were my whole world, I wanted everything with you. I don’t understand. Help me understand.”
His voice cracks and the lump in your throat from earlier reappears. “I was- I was unhappy for a really long time Javy.”
He immediately shakes his head, cutting you off. “No, no that’s bullshit. I know that’s bullshit. C’mon, was there someone else?”
“Are you insinuating I fucking cheated on you?” You near shout, straightening up.
“Well!” He matches the raise in voice, standing up from the porch swing.
“That’s bullshit.” You say. “If I recall, I was 25, working a dead end barista job because the masters degree I went into thousands of dollars of debt for proved to be useless with a boyfriend who let his friends walk all over me! I didn’t just wake up that day and decide I was miserable Javy! It was a slow build, a build you contributed to!”
The front door opens and shuts and you spare a glance to see Boone and Javi lingering by the front door.
Later, they’ll confess to you that the only reason they’d ventured outside to interrupt the conversation is because the pilots inside had gotten so smug in their surety that Javy would convince you to leave Oklahoma to be with him, they’d started to worry about you being alone on the porch.
Javi had hastily assured you that they didn’t think you couldn’t handle yourself, but he was afraid he’d hit all your guilty spots, Boone sure he’d say all the things you’d wanted to hear back then, and you’d leave the Wranglers without so much as backwards glance. They’d wanted you to know they had your back.
They’ll admit it was selfish of them and Dani will tell them they’re stupid for not remembering how much you love your life here, and you’ll tell them that you’re not angry, that their intentions had been good.
All their presence does now in this moment though is piss your ex-boyfriend off as he throws his hands up. “Can’t even have one conversation without your little fucking guard dogs, huh? Little side pieces behind your girlfriend’s back?”
“Stop it.” You say sternly. “Stop going there. You know I was never unfaithful to you, you know that I never would’ve done that.”
“I don’t know if I ever knew you at all. Not really. So yeah, who’s to say if you aren’t a cheater if you were quietly miserable enough to dump me and run halfway across the country.”
You groan, rubbing your temples. “God, you’re not listening to me. You didn’t listen to me then, you don’t listen to me now.”
“All I ever did was fucking listen to you! You never shut up!”
Boone lets out a “Hey man!” alongside Javi’s “Whoa there.”
“Don’t talk to her like that man.” Boone says. “Have some respect, that there’s a lady and she was a lady you cared a lot about, so be nice.” Boone drawls.
Your ex fixes him with a glare that would’ve made a weaker man whimper, but Boone isn’t one to back down. He drives into tornados and shoots rockets at them for fuck’s sake.
Unintentionally or not, Boone’s intervention gives you the pause you need to take a deep breath and collect yourself. “Javy.” You start, softer this time. His eyes snap over to yours. “I understand the anger and frustration and the confusion. I know that I left rather suddenly and I never gave you any explanation as to why. But you have to know, we were fighting all the time and I was so unhappy, not just in my relationship with you, but in my job and myself. And after Texas, I snapped. It was a catalyst event that permanently altered the course of my life.”
His eyebrows furrow in confusion. “The fuck does Texas have to do with anything?”
You sigh. “You keep saying that you still love me, yeah? The problem with that Javy is that you’re in love with a version of me that doesn’t exist anymore. That girl that you loved died in Texas and she’s never coming back.”
“I still don’t understand.” You sigh, licking your lips as you glance at your friends. Javy’s voice is rising again but you know that you’ll never be able to get him to understand the truth without blowing up Jake’s spot. And truthfully, maybe it’s long past due. “We were in love, we were happy, you were my best friend. We go to Texas for Bob’s bachelor party and three days later, you’re dumping me to go hop on a plane to Oklahoma to never be seen again. That doesn’t make any fucking sense! What the hell does Texas have to do with anything?!”
You move faster than you let your brain think about it, sliding through your friends as you push open the front door, striding through the foyer. You catch Bradley’s eye as you do so and he straightens. “Where the fuck is Jake?”
Jake comes into view as he shuts the fridge, turning to face you. “What?” He asks tiredly, but judging by the look on his face, you think he already knows.
“I want you to be honest.” You say, every bit of the calm you’d tried to collect slipping through your grasp as you inch closer to Dani and Lilly. “Tell them the truth about what happened in Texas.”
“Are we really doing this?” He asks, plopping down on one of the bar stools by the kitchen island.
“You owe me, Seresin. After everything you put me through, you owe me.”
Jake sighs, scrubbing a hand down his face as Javy’s head swings wildly between the two of you.
Just when you’re about to turn and accept the villain narrative these men had decided for you, Jake sighs again. “I asked her to lie about the rodeo.” He says quietly. “We never made it to shelter.”
“So? A little wind, a little rain, that’s your excuse for going off the deep end?” Javy snaps but Jake isn’t finished.
“We watched Steven die.”
The silence that follows is one you never want to experience again as the whole room tunnels in on Jake. Lilly stands up, Dani not far behind her, nudging you towards the door and silently talking over your head to your friends but you feel rooted to your spot.
“What?” Lainey asks first, pushing her self up as she takes shaky breaths. “You- you saw him die? And you never told me?”
“Why didn’t you ever tell me that Jake?” Bradley asks quietly, a quiet concern and cool anger laced into the words.
“I don’t know. I wasn’t thinking. I don’t know if I was trying to protect her or me but I did it anyways. It’s why I gave her Tyler’s number.” He says, finally raising his eyes to meet the room. “I’m the one who gave her Tyler’s info. When she dumped Coyote that day, I knew she was a serious flight risk in more ways than one and I- I knew if I could get her to Tyler, he’d take care of her. I knew she’d be safe with Ty. And I mean obviously he did.” He says, waving a hand at his brother and Kate. “I owed it to her after all this times I said those things about y’alls sex life, all those times I made fun of her behind your back. I mean, everything I said about her age or about how you guys wouldn’t work long-term so you guys would break up-“ Jake cuts himself off, sniffing. “I was awful to her under the guise of trying to be a good friend but I was a rotten friend and a rotten person and I’m sorry.”
“What the hell is wrong with you?”
You expect it to be Javy but it’s Tyler and you think you can see his hand shake as he pulls himself off of the couch.
“Genuinely, you haven’t changed a day. You’re still that same piece of shit you were then, when you couldn’t bother showing up to our grandparents funeral, the people who raised us, because of some stupid little trophy. You’re out here a decade later making a poor girl in her twenties who was simply trying to exist with the guy she loved feel like her life isn’t worth living anymore, that she doesn’t offer anything of value to this world.”
“But, I mean- it worked out right? she’s been with you guys and she’s happier than she’s ever been in her whole life.”
“Oh, sure no, it worked out.” Javi intervenes. “If you discount the irreversible trauma and her inherent belief that she would always, eventually, force the people around her to see her as a burden, then yeah, it totally worked out.”
“Which we’re still working on undoing, by the way. Thanks for that. ” Dani comments dryly.
“Okay, hey, hold on- that’s not all on Jake.” You interrupt and Bradley’s head swings towards you.
“Are you seriously fucking defending him right now?”
“I’m defending him because that’s wrong! What Jake did didn’t do anything other than reinforce an idea I have held about myself my whole life, Bradshaw! But you don’t get that, just like you never got it back then! You had two parents who loved you unconditionally and friends and all the support in the world! I’ve never had that! I grew up with a piece of shit family, I grew up with awful friends and an even worse ex-boyfriend, and you people refused to ever understand the life I came from! Don’t pin that all on Jake!”
Lilly tugs on your arm, telling you to breathe and it’s the first time you realize you’re even crying.
In a flash, you dig the keys for one of the cars out from Lilly’s pocket, turning on your heel. Your friends call out after you but you don’t listen to them as you wipe tears from your eyes, vision blurry as you make your way towards the car.
And then someone’s there, wrestling the keys from your grasp.
It’s Javi.
“I’ll take you wherever you want to go.” He says softly. “I just- don’t want you driving right now.”
You nod, climbing into the car passenger seat. Once you’re in, Javi reaches over the console to give you a hug. It’s at an awkward angle and you can’t stop crying, but it’s warm and safe and all you need in that moment.
“You’re gonna be okay, California. We got you.”
-
“Where did you guys go?”
Boone asks from his spot on the couch. He’s leaned up against Lilly, feet on Dani’s lap as Dexter putters around the kitchenette in your two bedroom suite Jake had paid for.
“The beach.” Javi says, setting the keys on the entryway table.
“Where’s Ty and Kate?” You ask.
It goes eerily quiet. “Um, they had to run an errand.” Boone says after a long minute.
“I’m too tired to even unpack that.” You say, running a hand down your face. “I’m going to go shower.”
You slip inside to the bedroom you and Kate had been sharing with Dani and Lilly, walking into the bathroom. After shedding your clothes, you step into the hot water. It soothing against your skin as you bite back a yawn.
You’d told Javi to pick a beach, any beach, and the two of you had found a picnic table over looking the shore as you looked out at the moonlit waves.
It had been a quiet, grounding peace that had settled over you as you had reviewed the events of the night. Javi’s quiet voice mixed with the crashing of the waves, soothing you as he talked about Miami, and the Tornado Tamers, and the military, and a hundred different things.
Now though, in the lull of noise, save for the quiet murmurs of your friends through the wall, guilt prickles at you underneath your skin, heavy and all consuming.
It’s second nature, autopilot, climbing out of the shower and tugging on Kate’s sweatshirt, blindly pulling out a pair of sleep shorts from one of your bags. The bed that had once looked so appealing no longer looks comfortable as you have to work considerably to swallow around the rapidly growing lump in your throat.
You open the door right as Kate and Tyler return to the hotel room. Tyler gives you a grin as he waves a bag in the air. “Look where we trekked to. Surprise.”
Normally, you would’ve grinned and laughed and said I’d pay good money to see the Midwesterners in an In-N-Out but now all you can do is shrink into Kate’s sweatshirt as you get the overwhelming feeling that you don’t deserve this.
You don’t deserve Kate, you don’t deserve this team. Not this job you loved so much, not this life you’d carved out for yourself.
Kate’s face falls as she closes the distance between the two of you. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m so tired of feeling guilty.” You gasp out, a sob you hadn’t expected coming out. It leaves you scrambling for breath, coming in ragged pants. “I’m tired of feeling guilty for being happy, for having this job, for tricking all of you into thinking that I’m- that I’m worth something. I’m so tired of- of feeling guilty for leaving him and- and I’m tired of feeling guilty for living.”
Kate’s hug is tight, almost as if she lets go, you’ll slip right through her fingers. “Sweetheart.” She whispers into your shoulder as you hesitate to wrap your arms around her.
“I don’t feel like I deserve it. I don’t feel like I deserve any of it. I didn’t feel like I deserved it then and I don’t feel like I deserve it now.”
Kate lets you go, a soft look coming over her face as her hands find your face. You feel like you look worse than you ever have, tears sliding down your face, choking on your own words and sobs and snot.
“Baby…” She says, so soft and tender, in that way that’s all Kate and usually makes you blush, makes you feel more seen then you ever have in your entire life. “You’ve had one hell of a go at life, I’ll admit you got a rough set of cards. But you- you went through something traumatic and you made the only decisions you could at the time. Those people- they’re angry at you because they feel bad for their friend cause he got hurt. And maybe we’re all a villain in someone else’s life but you shouldn’t feel guilty for doing what you need to do for you.” She takes a deep breath. “You didn’t deserve to die for him any more than I deserved to die for my friends. And for the first time, I really mean that. We don’t deserve to suffer or feel pain for the rest of our lives because of it, you know? It’s okay for us to continue to live and laugh and love — our mistakes, they don’t define us. We don’t have to live there.” Kate’s eyes are pleading, begging you to hear her and understand her; to believe her.
You nod as she swipes a thumb to wipe away a tear.
“You would never blame me for what my happened to my friends. You’d never say I should suffer in pain or in a life of exile because of it. You’d tell me for what it is — that it was a freak accident and it was out of your control. You can’t spend the rest of your life in those haunted what ifs and I know you’d never want that for me either.”
“Yeah.” Your voice is gravely, raw, but you can’t even focus on it as Boone’s lanky arms wrap around your frame. “Yeah, I hear you.”
“Sides, even if it were your fault-“
“Boone!” Lilly chides, even as she wraps her own arms around you.
“I ain’t saying it is! You people, you always assume the worst outta me-“
“Get to the point!” Javi’s exhausted voice comes from the kitchen. You snort, leaning your head into Boone’s shoulder.
“Get on with it, Booney.” You whisper.
“‘M just saying, even if it were your fault, it don’t change that your part of our family now. Always gonna be, no matter where them wind or tornados take us. Or what some stupid Navy guy says about you for that matter.”
Boone squeezes you before he steps back. Lilly lets you go, albeit hesitantly and you wipe your nose on the sleeve of Kate’s sweatshirt. Javi’s hand finds your back, wrapping you into a tight hug as you turn.
“You gotta start letting yourself believe you’re worthy of good things.” He mumbles into your sweatshirt. “Trust me, I- I get it okay. It was just as rough for me when I left StormPar, but Boone’s right. We’re a family.”
You nod into Javi’s shoulder, squeezing the man before letting him go. You wipe your eyes, taking a breath. “Okay, okay, I think I’m good. Just been a hell of a night.”
Javi nods and the room breaks into quiet chatter as the bags of food get passed around, burgers getting split up among the group.
Tyler grabs your arm as you pad over to sit on the couch next to Kate. His hug is tight, the smell of cedar and campfire lingering on his flannel a far cry from the smell of jet fuel and whiskey that followed his brother.
“You saved my life T.” You say quietly, even though no one would be able to hear you through the conversation at the couch. “The Wranglers saved my life. I hope you know that.”
He squeezes you. “Nah, kid. We just loved you enough for you to see why you should stay. The saving part was all you.”
-
“I need to go run an errand.” The table looks up at you, pausing around mid-conversation, breakfast plates forgotten. “So you guys can head out on the road ahead of us.”
“What’re you up to?” Boone asks.
You shake your head. “There’s just something I gotta do before we head out.”
“Some unfinished business?” Javi asks.
“Something like that.”
-
The weather is unusually dreary, rain drizzling down on and off as you make the drive over the Coronado bridge. You park in front of the boys house, turning the key in the ignition as you turn to face Tyler and Javi in the backseat.
“I’m not sure how long this is gonna take, but I’ll be back.”
“Man, what am I supposed to do to entertain myself?” Javi moans and Kate turns, giving him a sharp glare.
Late last night, after everyone had fallen asleep, you’d admitted to Kate that you didn’t think you could leave things with him like that, that you couldn’t live with yourself if you never gave him the closure he so desperately needed.
Kate had told you, voice muffled, that she understood. That she’d stand by you in whatever conversation you wanted to have with him.
“Go take a walk for all I care. It’s a nice neighborhood.” You say, before wrenching the car door opening, cutting off Javi’s bemoaned But it’s raining! as you slam it harder behind you than you normally ever would’ve allowed it to.
You wince, already hearing Tyler scold you in your head as you stride up the expansive driveway, saying a silent thank you that Javy’s beat-up truck is sitting in the driveway.
You force yourself to take a deep breath as you knock on the door. The blue paint is peeling more than ever you note, before it swings open, revealing Mickey. He’s donned in basketball shorts and a muscle tee and must’ve just come back from a run, based on the sweat and rain accumulated on him.
He almost doesn’t seem surprised to see you.
“Hey.” He says, leaning against the door.
“Hey.” You respond. “Is Javy here?”
He nods, opening the door enough to let you inside and the oak shuts firmly behind you as you follow him through the familiar foyer to the couches in the living room.
“You guys are not much for redecorating.”
Mickey groans. “Kid, the fact that we’ve gotten anything on the walls as long as we lived in this place is a miracle in and of itself, you know that.”
Despite the situation, you snort, recalling when the boys had enlisted you to build Mickey’s desk one time two years into them living here. “Oh, I remember.”
“Coyote!” Mickey shouts up the stairs as you arrive next to the couch, nudging Jake. He gives you a soft smile, pushing himself up to give you a quick hug.
“I’m really sorry about last night. I didn’t mean to ruin it.”
Jake shakes his head. “‘S my fault. You and I both know there was probably no other outcome than that.”
The fabric of his Texas sweatshirt is soft as he squeezes you, letting you go as you hear footsteps on the stairs.
You sigh, turning catching sight of your ex turning the corner. His eyes widen slightly at the sight of you and he tugs on the edges of his Saints sweatshirt.
He’s nervous, you realize. The taste of that truth is bitter and acrid on your tongue.
“We need to talk.” You say with more stern bravado then you feel and you force yourself to soften as Mickey lets out a low whistle. “And you, uh, said you had some of my stuff.”
“We have all of your stuff.” Mickey comments into his protein shake. “It’s all in Bob’s old room.” He points with a finger over his shoulder, but you still know the way.
You head in the direction to Bob’s room, tugging on the sleeve of Javy’s hoodie as you do.
He follows you, shutting the bedroom door behind him as you scan the room. “When did Bob move out?” You ask as you pull a box out, sifting through the books.
“Like two or three months after you left. Think he had plans to move out earlier but uh-“ Javi pauses and your eyes flicker up to study him. “I think they were concerned I’d do something stupid to myself if it was too much change at once.”
You sigh, eyes fluttering shut as you squat and brace yourself against the box. “Javy.” You breathe out.
“I’m really sorry about how last night went.” He says as he leans up against one of the taller stacks of boxes. “My Mom’s pretty pissed at me for how I handled myself. I’m mad at myself too. I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that. Drinking or not, you didn’t deserve it. I was just- confused and frustrated and so hopeful it made me scared. I guess I never prepared myself for what it would be like to see you again, even though clearly-“ He says, gesturing to the room. “I always let myself keep that door open.”
“Why did you keep this shit anyways?” You ask. “You coulda let my Mom toss all this shit out.”
He shakes his head. “I couldn’t have. I- I always thought maybe you’d come home. That when you did come home, you’d roll your eyes about your Mom and want your stuff back. Fools hope I guess.”
You let yourself fall to the floor in a cross-crossed position, scrubbing a hand down your face. “Javy, I am so sorry about how I left. You deserved a lot better than that from me, after everything you did for me. But I was scared and I ran and you got caught in that.”
“Every day since then, I’ve wondered what it was about me that wasn’t enough to make you stay. Did I not love you right? Did I do something to hurt you? Did I not stop when I should’ve?” He takes a sharp breath at the thought that he might’ve pushed you too far while being intimate as being your reason for running. “Every night for two years, I’ve laid in bed at night, going over every single detail. But last night, after hearing that it was Jake’s fault, I’ve gone over every what if. What if he had listened to you? What if he hadn’t taken you? What if I hadn’t gotten drunk that night before or- or had convinced you to stay? What if you had stayed home from the trip; what if Sophia had never asked you to be a bridesmaid? What if-“
“Javy, stop.” You stay sternly, pushing yourself up off the floor. “You can’t live in those what ifs. They’ll drive you fucking crazy. You can’t keep living in the past. And it ain’t Jake’s fault, much as we would all, himself probably included, like to lay the blame on him. We can’t go back and change it and we can’t live in that history neither. What happened, happened.”
He lets out a breath. “You’re handling this better than me.”
“I’ve had two years to process it. I’ve had two years in a new town with a new job and a new partner and new friends to heal from all of it. You haven’t even had two days to grapple with the truth.” You say as you pop the lid on the box. Your eyes scan the room as you let him process the information, trying to catalogue all that he has, what you need and what you don’t.
“My Niall Horan shirt!” You exclaim, wrestling a box out of the corner of the room. “I’d been wondering what happened to this!” You pop the lid off, subsequently discovering your American Girl doll. “And Julie! I remember that year I went as her for Halloween and brought her over here. She was the highlight of the party for all the drunken idiots.”
“That was the year of the dolls.” He comments from behind you.
“Yeah, yeah, cause you guys all went as Ken dolls, except for Mickey, who went as Carlos from Big Time Rush, and I finally had to explain to you who they were after I made that joke, that they were the greatest boy band of our generation, on our second date.”
“It’s crazy to think about now, how the yahoos could all see how I felt about you and I was still insisting we were just friends.”
“Oh, enough time has passed. We can admit now that we weren’t just friends. We made out too much, in public no less, for that to be anywhere near platonic.”
He doesn’t say anything for a minute and you turn, worried you’ve gone too far. His eyes are glassy, a fond smile on his face.
“I really loved you, you know that?”
“Javy…”
He gives a half-shrug, looking down. “You can say what you want about being unhappy, about needing to leave, but I hope you know that I really loved you. I really cared about you and I really thought some day you’d come home to me. You were my best friend and I wanted to grow old with you. It just- it just feels like it didn’t mean anything to you.”
A lump grows in your throat as he wipes a few tears away from his cheeks. You look down, unsure if you should admit the truth.
“Javy, I found the ring.”
“W-what?”
“The night we got back from Texas, I accidentally found it. But it- it freaked me out. I was already walking such a fine line those days, so afraid and so mixed up from what happened, already so unhappy and I knew it was over then and there. Because I found it and pictured you getting down on one knee and tried to think of what I’d say and when I knew I’d say no, I knew I needed to end it.”
He lets out a choked sob as you work your throat around the ever-growing lump, knowing you have to finish this conversation, as much as it pains you.
“Javy, of course it meant something to me.” You say, unclenching your hand from where it’s fisted in the dark blue material of the t-shirt. You set the objects down back in the box, taking a few steps towards him. “Javy, I did love you. Really. You were my first real boyfriend, my first serious boyfriend, my first. I thought the world of you and you were my best friend too. Okay, my favorite times were when we would stay up all night laughing or- or all those times we just existed together. But both things can be true — you can have hurt me, I can have been unhappy, and we both can still have loved each other the best we could’ve at the time.” You say, taking another step towards him. “But that’s what I keep trying to tell you. That girl that I was with you, that person you fell in love with, she doesn’t exist anymore. I’m not that version of me anymore.” Javy only looks at you as he cries as you cling to the hope that this time he’ll finally listen.
“Can I have a hug?” He croaks. You nod, reaching out for him and he’s quick to tug you into his embrace, as if you might change your mind waiting a hair of a second longer.
His hug is tight, and you can feel the way his tears wet your pale yellow Oklahoma crewneck, the same way you know you’re soaking his Saints hoodie.
It’s weird, because hugging him doesn’t feel like coming home like it used to.
It’s weird, because it feels like the door on this part of your life is finally shutting behind you.
You think you’re at peace with it.
“You sure you won’t come back?” His muffled voice sounds.
“You know I can’t.” He whimpers as you  shake your head. “I’d be coming back to a place that isn’t my home anymore, a life that isn’t mine. Javy, you have to let me go. If not for me, then for yourself.”
“I don’t know how.” He pleads into your shoulder.
“It takes time.” You whisper. “But one day it won’t hurt so much. I promise.”
You aren’t sure how long the two of you stand there, but finally he lets you go, stepping back as his back hits the wall, sliding down. You take that as a sign that you can get back to sorting.
“Hey, you’ve asked me a lot of questions about what’s changed since you been gone. Can I ask you questions about what you’ve been up to?” He asks, voice watery and raw.
“Seems only fair.” You say, squatting down to rifle through a box full of high school memorabilia.
“Are you dating Kate?”
You swallow, glancing at him as you pull out your yearbooks. “Yeah, I am.”
“I figured.”
“How’d you figure it out?”
“She looks at you like how I used to.” He says with a shrug as he stretches his legs out in front of him. Upon seeing your dubious look, he lets out a wet laugh. “She just- she always found a reason to be next to you last night. She always brought you into conversation, looked for you when you weren’t with her, looked for you even when you were with her. It was obvious she cared a great deal about you and I sort of guessed she was who you didn’t want to bring into this.”
You shake your head. “This isn’t her fight. She’s got my back, I know that, but this didn’t need to involve her if I could help it. It was between me and you.”
“She seems cool.” He finally comments after a minute.
“Freaky genius and all the wit to match.”
“Like you.” Your cheeks warm at the compliment as you untangle the honor cords. “She make you happy?”
“Honestly?” You say and he nods. “I see my whole life with her in a way I’ve never seen it before. She’s my best friend and my partner. I love her to death and there’s nowhere in this world I wouldn’t follow her.”
“You guys have any pets?”
“Two dogs and a cat.”
“Jesus, is this farm you live on really a zoo?”
“I think her Mom feels that way sometimes.” You say with a chuckle. “No, the team has Buttons, but he’s really Boone’s if you want to get into it. Ty’s taken on a dog I named Enid by sheer force of will from this dog. And Kate and I adopted a kitten named Peaches about this time two years ago. Ty and I are getting horses in October too.”
“So… you and Kate living together?”
You shake your head. “No. Not yet, anyways. Technically, I got a small two bedroom apartment in Tulsa I rent with the other Javi but he’s almost always somewhere in Arkansas with Boone in the off-season and I spend all my time with Kate on her farm when we aren’t out on the road.”
“They seem like really good people.”
“They’re some of the best. Hey, are you still in touch with Elle?”
Javy’s eyes widen. “Your friend from grad school? Some, why?”
“You should ask her on a date.”
“No- No, I couldn’t.”
You fix him with a look. “Why not? I bet that girl is still enamored with you.”
“She was your best friend, that would be wrong.”
You shrug, setting aside a snow globe. “We ain’t together anymore and Elle and I ain’t friends anymore. And trust me, if you and I hadn’t been what we were when Elle came into my life, Elle would’ve a hundred percent gone after you. And I wouldn’t be mad you know. You deserve to move on.”
“Not with one of your friends.”
You click your tongue. “I’m just saying…”
-
Kate’s drumming her fingertips on the edges of the door as the minutes tick by, the gnawing in her stomach resurfacing as the time drags on. Javi huffs for the millionth time, blowing a stray curl away from his face as a blue Bronco passes them, pulling up to park in the driveway.
Javi leans forward, peering over the center console to study the two men climbing out of the Bronco through the windshield. “Hey Ty, isn’t that your brother’s fiancé?”
Tyler looks up from his phone, glancing out his window. When he finally responds, his voice is impossibly tight, making her wince. “Kate, where exactly are we right now?”
Upon her non-answer, Tyler pulls himself from the car, a colorful swear leaving his mouth as Javi follows right behind him. She scrambles out of her door, tugging on the two men’s arms. “Stop it.” She pleads, causing them both to turn. “Look, I don’t like it either but I gotta respect the fact that she wants closure. I’d do anything to have that, you know that.”
Tyler yanks his arm back, striding across the lawn towards the two men as they let themselves in the house. Bradley’s eyes are wide as he catches sight of Tyler, shouting into the house.
She groans when Tyler shoulders past Bradley and Pete, Javi still hot on his heels. “I am so sorry about them.” She apologizes to the two men as they shut the front door.
“Tyler.” Jake growls, yanking on his brother’s arm. “I will sit on your head like I did when we were kids.”
“I am not gonna let you do this to her again. For two years, my team has been putting that girl back together, putting together pieces of her you broke.” Tyler snaps, poking his finger into Jake’s chest.
“Yeah? And he’s waited two years for this conversation, to finally get closure. They need this. And if you interrupt it, so help me God.” Jake says as he pushes his brother towards the couch. Jake takes the hint, sitting as Javi hesitantly follows suit. After a few moments of awkward silence, Kate clears her throat, catching Tyler’s eye. She jerks her head to his brother and he shakes his head. She does it again, causing Pete to glance up at her.
“Are you okay, kid?”
“Tyler.” She crosses her arms. “You know she doesn’t want you to leave it like this.”
Jake’s eyes flicker up at her, giving her an eery sense of deja vu. It had been a strange adjustment, seeing a carbon copy of a person they all knew and loved, but yet acted so different. Whereas Tyler was rough around the edges, thick cowboy country accent and swear words that would make milk curdle and friends with everyone, ever the life of the party, Jake had kept a lot to himself the night before. He held himself together, never in anyway that would indicate cracks in his well-maintained image. She saw him let loose a few times with his friends, eager to hear about your and Tyler’s lives, and always polite to the Wranglers but there was a certain detachment from it all that Tyler lacked.
“Tyler, I am sorry.” Tyler grunts, crossing his arms. Jake sighs before trying again. “For all of it. Genuinely. I know you’re thinking I’m real selfish right about now and I’m thinking it too. I’m sure she didn’t let up to the worst of it and I’m really sorry about all of it. But I didn’t call you for some sick or twisted reason of hurting her. I called you here because you’re my brother and I want you here. I want you to see this life that I’ve built for myself, cause I’m finally happy, and I- I want to share it with you.”
“Oh, you mean the life you were too busy building to come to our grandparents funeral? Some life.” Tyler scoffs.
Jake’s shoulders fall. “Ty, I’m sorry.” He whispers. “You’re my brother, you were my best friend, and there hasn’t been a day that goes by that I don’t regret stepping up when it mattered. No stupid trophy or promotion was ever worth losing you.”
Tyler swallows, letting out a deep breath but doesn’t say anything further and Jake clearly accepts that that’s all he’s going to get out of him. He turns to Kate. “Is she happy? With you?”
“Yes.” Javi blurts out. “So happy.”
She peers down at her friend, who has a rapidly growing sheepish grin on his scarlet face. “The way you say that makes it sound like we aren’t happy.”
“Just have to make the point.”
She gives an exaggerated roll of her eyes. “You’re ridiculous.” She turns back to Jake and Bradley. “Yeah, yeah she really is happy.”
“Does this mean I can go back to watching the Wranglers streams now or am I gonna get yelled at again? Cause now that you think about it, we all kinda gaslit Coyote.” Fanboy calls from across the kitchen. Tyler turns, giving the boy a curious look.
“What?”
“Mickey used to watch your guys streams until I started appearing in them.” You comment, appearing next to Kate. She jumps a little, taking you in. Your face has the remnants of tears, voice raw, but there’s a lack of weight in your body she’s been seeing you carry ever since she’s known you. You wrap your arms around one of Kate’s leaning your head on your shoulder after setting a plastic tub on the ground. “They all convinced him,” You say, jerking your head towards your ex. “That he was losing his mind. Also, how come my errands never get to just be my errands? What part of stay in the car until I got back did we not understand?”
-
“I tried to stop them, really I did.” Kate protests. You let out a quiet laugh, hiding your face in the back of her shirt.
“Have T and Jake made up?” You say quietly. She shakes her head and you sigh.
“Tyler-“
“No, and we’re leaving.” Tyler says, cutting you off as he pushes himself off the couch. “With the way Boone drives they’re probably halfway to Vegas by now.”
“Thats physically not possible.” Kate mutters and you snort.
“Tyler, I don’t want you to leave things like this.”
“That’s not your choice.” Tyler says gruffly, stalking to the front door. Both you and Kate wince as he slams it.
“I don’t know where he thinks he’s going, I still have the keys.” You say, finally letting go of Kate. “It’s my car anyways.” You mutter under your breath before sighing. “Anyways, we should really be on the road because Boone’s probably stopped at the alien tourist stop in Bakersfield by now.”
“If Tyler complains about traffic again, can we take a group vote to leave him on the side of the road?” Javi asks as he cranes his head up at you.
“We’re not leaving Tyler on the side of the road.” Kate says with a tired sigh.
“Even if he walks to Vegas?” Javi protests earning a tired laugh from you.
“Okay Kate, will you drive?” She nods as you hand her the keys, Javi standing up from the couch. “Javi, take that.” You say, pointing to the box. “I’m going to be out in just a minute.”
You wait for the door to shut behind them before turning to Jake. “Okay Jake, you can have your real hug now.” He grins as you pull him into a hug. “Don’t worry about him. It’ll take time.”
“I’m sure with a couple hours trapped in a car with you, he’ll cave and call.” Jake says softly, forced humor in the words.
(It would take three weeks, an incessantly annoying three weeks on your part, before Ty got so frustrated with you he’d called Jake while sitting on top of his truck on the ranch in Arkansas. You’re still not sure what they talked about, what was said, but by the end of the week, Tyler walked into the house with a wedding invitation on fancy card stock Tyler teased Jake endlessly for.)
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, though.” You say, squeezing him. “Let bygones by bygones. I have.”
He hums. “Take care of yourself.”
Bradley gives you a brief hug. “I’m glad you’re happy and safe kid. That’s all I would’ve ever wanted for you.”
“Hope you weren’t too hard on Jake.”
“No more than the normal amount.”
“The normal amount is zero.”
Bradley laughs. “You’re being more fair to him than he deserves, hope you know that.”
“Something something time space therapy.”
You reach your arms out for Pete and he stands up, giving you a grin, as Bradley laughs harder. “Don’t do anything out there that I would do.”
You laugh. “No promises.” You pad over to Mickey, giving him a tight hug. “If you ever decide you get tired of the pilot life and want to become a storm chaser, you let me know.” Mickey laughs.
“You’ll have to unblock me first.” You cringe at the reminder and pat his back.
“Done. You take care of yourself.” He gives you a two finger salute, letting you step back.
You turn back to Javy, who’s mostly kept to himself through the whole conversation. “Come here you.” He looks surprised you’re offering him another hug, but he returns it nonetheless. “You be safe out there, you hear me.”
“Yes ma’am.” He whispers. “Don’t get sucked up into a tornado.”
“I’ll try my hardest. And uh, really do think about my Elle suggestion.”
You both linger for a minute longer before eventually he pulls away. “You sure that’s all you want to take?”
You shrug. “Yeah, I got what I need out there. Sell the rest of the stuff, make a quick buck off of me. It’s the least I can do.”
He chuckles, shaking his head. “Sounds like a deal. Uh, can I walk you to the door?” You nod and he trails behind you quietly. “So this is uh, really goodbye.”
“Seems like it.”
“I’m uh, really happy you found what you’re looking for. I can only hope I’ll find it someday.”
“You will.” You say quietly. “I’m really sorry it didn’t work out between us.”
“It’s for the better it seems.”
You nod. “Well-“ You clear your throat. “Goodbye Javy.”
The door shut behinds you with a soft thud. You sigh, padding across the wet grass as you slip in the seat next to Kate. As she pulls away from the curb, Javi asks how you’re feeling.
“It’s stupid.” You mumble. “But I keep thinking of this Taylor Swift lyric.”
“Not this again.” Tyler mutters and through the rear view mirror you can see Javi flick his ear.
“What is it?” Kate asks softly.
“It’s just this one line — what a valiant roar, what a bland goodbye. It’s just odd, I think. I did really love him at one point and I did really think maybe I’d spend the rest of my life with him, that those would be my best days. And it all just kind of ends here.” You sigh, settling back into your seat. “But- I don’t know. I’m not mad about how it all happened, I guess. It lead me here.”
Tyler lifts his chin, giving you a soft yet sincere smile through the rearview mirror. “And we’re happy to have you here.”
-
“So,” Kate starts from the balcony of your Vegas hotel room. Your friends are fast asleep inside, all piled somewhere on the beds pushed together. You’re pretty sure when you left, Boone had pushed himself in between Tyler and Javi and was snoring. “I’ve been sort of- I kind of have something I’ve been wanting to talk to you about.”
You glance at your girlfriend. “Yeah?”
She nods. “Last night, when Javi and Boone left cause of the bad feeling they got- they weren’t the only ones who felt that. It kinda made me sick, hearing them talk about you like that, and thinking about the fact that you might actually do it. That you might remember that you liked your life there better and leave Oklahoma.” She takes a sharp breath. “Leave me.”
“Kate-“
“I know I’m not really the best at- at always showing you how much you mean to me, that sometimes I get caught up in chasing the storm, in actually making it all mean something, that I forgot about how great of a thing I have. I’m trying really hard not to take it for granted, because I did once and I can’t- I can’t go through that again. To lose you would be one of the greatest losses of my life.”
“Kate, I love you. You aren’t gonna lose me, I’m not going anywhere. I only want to be with you, there isn’t any other life for me except for the one right next to you.”
She reached up, brushing away an eyelash that had fallen onto your cheek. “I think I’m sort of starting to understand that now.” She reaches out for your hand. “Listen, I‘ve sort of- sort of been keeping my eye on some places going up for sale in Sapulpa. I know my Mom doesn’t mind having us around but I think maybe it’s time we give her back her peace and quiet.”
“Kate…”
She reaches a hand up, tucking a hair behind your ear. “We can keep the barn as home base but I found this really cute place for not too bad of a price while we were driving out here. I sort of scheduled a tour with the realtor for the day after next.” She’s wearing a soft, cautious smile.
“Kate,” Your breath hitches. “Kate Carter, are you asking me to move in with you? Are you asking me to buy a house with you?”
She gives a sort of nonchalant shrug. “If that’s what you want.”
“I- Yes, of course that’s what I want!” You exclaim, belatedly realizing you may wake your friends. Well, not Boone at least, who sleeps like the dead. Your voice drops considerably. “Yes, yes I would love that.”
Kate gives you a grin, reaching out to tug on the elastic band of your pajama pants to bring you closer to her. You laugh, colliding into her. Your hands brace yourself on her shoulders as Kate smiles wider than you think you’ve ever seen her.
“I love you so much.” She whispers. “How lucky am I.”
“I hope it’s like this forever.” You say softly. “I know, there’s no guarantee and eventually, they’ll find other things. But I hope it’s always this easy, you know? Not just with us but with them too you know? They might not be the Wranglers forever but I hope they’re our family forever.” You say, turning your head to look at your friends through the glass.
You feel the outline of Kate’s smile on your cheek. “They will be. I promise. No matter where we all go, they’ll still be here. Can’t take the home out of Oklahoma, right?”

girl at home | mat barzal | part 11
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: mat barzal x reader
warning: alcohol and angst word count: 1288k (sorry)

masterlist masterpost ask box
The aftermath of her is interesting, to say the least. Training camp is creeping up and soon, Mat will have to return to New York. The two of you had a long but enlightening conversation shortly after his breakdown at your apartment. You had woken up the next morning to Nora’s foot digging into your kidney and Mat’s feet near your face but all the discomfort evaporated when the three of you made breakfast together.
For the first time since Mat found out about Nora, you didn’t have anxiety or dread hanging over your shoulders. You weren’t worrying about other people's opinions or how Mat is adjusting or crazy girlfriends. You’re finally able to focus on trying to figure out how exactly to make this work.
Mat on the other hand, is doing everything he can to try and make up for everything but he’s going a tad overboard.
“She does not need a kitten, Mathew,” you say firmly, refusing to look at his phone that has a picture of a kitten.
“C’mon, look at that cute little fluffy baby,” he says, trying to push the phone closer to you. “It’ll teach her responsibility!”
“She’s six,” you remind him, picking up a blanket off the couch and folding it. Mat’s been sleeping at your apartment but on the couch, much to Nora’s dismay. She assumes now that Mat isn’t dating anyone, you and Mat will get back together. The look of relief on her face when Mat told her Calista wasn’t going to be around anymore made you want to cry. You hadn’t truly understood just how much Mat’s toxic relationship was affecting Nora.
However, her insistence that you and Mat get married now is getting a bit out of hand.
“We should talk about it,” he says quietly, snapping you out of your thoughts.
He’s not talking about the kitten now. He’s referring to what kind of living situation you’re going to have come hockey season.
“Yeah,” you sigh, placing the final blanket on the pile and turning to face him. He looks unsure, eyes darting around the room and looking everywhere except at you.
It’s unusual to see him unsure about himself. The Mat you knew when you were young was confident and rarely doubted anything.
The past two months changed that, Nora changed it.
“I know you said that you don’t want to move-”
“Mat,”
“-but what if we just do weekends?”
You give him a dry look. “Weekends? You want me and Nora to fly to New York every weekend? What are we, Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift?”
“If you’d told me about her in the first place, this wouldn’t be an issue!” He snaps, and you flinch because he’s right. If you had listened to what everyone was telling you seven years ago, and told Mat about Nora, you wouldn’t be in this situation. You had your reasons though, and you’ll stand by them.
“You’re never going to forgive me for that, are you?”
He shrugs. “I don’t know how I can.”
. . .
Bringing up the news that Mat has to go back to New York soon does not go over well with Nora. You’ve seen her throw tantrums before, but this is next level. She locks herself in her bedroom and refuses to come out, demanding for grandma Nadia to come to your apartment, which is an easy fix. One phone call and she’s at the front door.
Nora opens her bedroom door when she hears Nadia’s voice, but still looks suspicious when she opens it enough for her to squeeze through. They’re in her room for about fifteen minutes before they both come out, Nadia looking exasperated but somber at the same time.
They stand in front of you and Mat, Nora staring at the floor and Nadia looking at the two of you.
“Nora would like to ask the New York Islanders owners to relocate to British Columbia,” she says, pressing her lips together. You can’t tell if she’s trying not to laugh or not to cry.
Mat kneels down so he’s at Nora’s height and hesitantly takes her hands in his. “We can definitely write them a letter peanut, but that’s a lot easier said than done.”
She’s looking at the ground still but you can see teardrops hitting the floor and your heart breaks even more, if possible.
“Why?” She sniffles and Mat gives you a desperate look. You’ve been a mom for six years, he hasn’t even been a dad for 2 months.
“Nora,” you say softly but firm enough that she looks up at you. “I explained how hockey works, remember?”
“Yeah,” she mumbles, sniffling. “But maybe if we explain, they’ll change it.”
You kneel down so you’re at her level and wipe her face. “They won’t, baby.”
She starts sobbing when you say that, throwing one arm around you and one around Mat. You keep yourself from breaking down but you can hear Nadia sniffing quietly and Mat’s shoulders are shaking.
All you wanted was for Nora to know Mat and his family but nothing has worked out the way you planned. You have no idea how it got to this point and you’re not sure if it’s going to be able to be fixed.
. . .
“What are you wishing for this year?” You asked Nora before she blew out the candles for her fifth birthday.
She tapped her chin a few times before grinning. “A daddy!”
Nobody else heard her and she was too distracted to see the heartbroken look on your face.
. . .
“Figure anything out yet?” Marlee asks, putting a glass of wine in front of you.
After taking a sip of your wine, you shake your head. “Nope. I can’t uproot Nora’s life, and Mat has to go back to New York.”
He’s been trying to spend as much time with her the past few days after her breakdown. They’re at the Barzal household tonight so you’re at Marlee’s, trying to forget for a while. You have no idea what to do and it’s killing you. Nora has been quiet and distant, and you don’t know what to read of that. Part of you wonders if she wants to move to New York with Mat, but deep down you know your daughter and if you just take her away from everybody and everything she knows, it won’t end well.
“I don’t know what to tell you,” Marlee says, being completely unhelpful. You know she can’t solve your problems but you thought she would at least have some advice.
“You got nothing?” You ask dryly.
She sighs, looking up at the ceiling before turning her gaze to you. “Look, moving to New York? Probably a bad idea, but is it worth trying? Maybe.”
You narrow your eyes at her. “How many glasses of wine have you had?”
“This is my first, thank you very much,” she sniffs.
“But you’re suggesting I move Nora to New York?” You ask incredulously. This is completely out of character for Marlee. She’s usually the one who thinks things through.
“A trial,” she says. “Try moving to New York with Mat. The worst that will happen is you and Nora coming home.”
Even though she’s saying this nonchalantly, she’s staring into her wine glass  thoughtfully. You know she wouldn’t have suggested it if she hadn’t thought it through.
The idea of moving is daunting and you’re not sure if you will even be able to go through with it. She’s right though, you could do a trial before Nora starts school. See how life in New York with Mat would be. If it would work.
“You really think it could work?” You ask quietly.
“You won’t know until you try.”

Akatsuki Concubine I
Tumblr media
18+ content, Minors do NOT interact
Pairing: Tobi x F!Reader x Konan
Summery: Coming from a poor background you were sold to the pleasure house at a young age even though your dream was to one day be a shinobi. Instead, as you grew up, your mistress got tired of your attitude and sold you to the first duo who asked. These two were none other than members of the formidable Akatsuki.
Warnings: NSFW, DubCon, Female receiving oral, threats of violence,
Word Count: 2.5k
A/N: This is an AU where all the Akatsuki members are alive and together. New mini-series. More parts coming soon.
Tumblr media
Sold to the pleasure house at a young age, you were familiar with a life whose path is set for them. You knew you were to serve noble men and their kinks before being sold and married off to the highest bidder. Only you weren’t one to be touched against your will. You had always wanted to become a ninja but you weren’t born into a shinobi family. You were born into a poor family who couldn’t afford to keep their only child. So you read and you practiced, all by yourself. Every day, from the time you were young till now, you centered your chakra, allowing it to flow from point to point. Feeling its life-giving strength fuel your power. You developed what you read was an unusual combination of Fire and Water style jutsus. Your favorite one to use was phoenix flower jutsu. The balls of fire dancing in the space between you and the latest toolbag who tried to touch what he didn’t pay for always made you feel protected. Little did you know it couldn’t protect you from everyone.
Tumblr media
Back at the Akatsuki hideout, the crew was getting rowdier than ever. Constant missions had kept everyone apart for months but the burnout was obvious so their leader, Tobi, assigned missions closer to home. The issue is that a band of ruthless shinobi such as the Akatsuki don’t do well within close quarters.
“Give back my detonating clay!”
“Nice try blondie. I know you were in my room trying to steal Samehada last night. She told me so.”
“Was not!”
“As if I believe you. Maybe I’ll feed this to Samehada, see if she’s as good of an ‘artist’ as you.”
“Wait! I need that for my art!”
“Psh, you speak of art as if it’s your god. Come to the way of Joshin and you’ll never worry about your silly art again.”
“SHUT IT Hidan!”
“Or what?! Wanna become Joshin’s next sacrifice!”
The purple-haired man swings his scythe at the young artist when the tall shark-like swordsman snatches up the boy by his long blonde strands.
“Hey! Let go or I’ll-”
“-What, kill me?”
“All three of you need to shut up! When’s our next mission so I don’t have to suffer you idiots?”
“Sasuke, that wasn’t a very nice thing to say to your brethren.”
“Not now, older brother.” he retorts with a pinch to his nose. Soon a half white, half black figure pops into the room.
“Can someone tell me what it’s like to poo?”
“Ah, gross Zetzu! Why’d ya have to bring that up again?!”
“Well, when someone answers the question, maybe I’ll stop.”
“ENOUGH!”
The voice was deep and commanding. An orange-masked man rounds the corner in his scarlet clouded cloak and all members fall silent.
“You are shinobi of an elite organization. Act like it.”
The man named Tobi strides through the room catching Pain on his way out.
“Pain, Konan, come.”
A tall orange haired man with a face littered in piercings and a slender woman with a paper flower in her hair follow behind into a spare room.
“These idiots are always bickering.” Tobi’s baritone states with exhaustion.
“They’re bored sir.”
“I give them respite and they thank me by acting like a bunch of children.”
“Maybe they need something to do…or a way to blow off steam.” Konan defends
“They should be training.” Pain says with a firm nod.
“...or…uh, I…nevermind.”
“Out with it woman.” Tobi’s words spit out like venom.
“Maybe they have…urges…to release?”
“Oh they do, do they?” Tobi presses “Are you speaking from experience?”
With flushed cheeks Konan’s lashes fall.
“That’s what I thought.” Tobi looks towards Pain, “You’re dismissed.”
Both shinobi turn to leave when the deep voice speaks up again, “Where are you going?”
A slender hand raises to tuck lavender strands behind one ear. “You said we were dismissed.”
“No, I said he was dismissed. You haven’t finished serving your purpose.”
With a thick swallow, Konan stands up straight and turns back towards Tobi. “What do you need?”
With each word he steps forward.“Tell me more about these urges? How do you suggest we satisfy them?”
With one more swallow, Konan finds her composure “I would suggest concubines sir.”
“Concubines, eh?”
“Yes, I believe there are several pleasure houses in the nearby village.”
“Good, I want you to check them out.”
“Check them out?”
“Yes, find some pretty merchandise for your comrades.”
“Don’t you think you should vet them first? You’ve been so picky with who you’ve let into this organization and these girls will be privy to our secrets.”
Tobi muses to himself before agreeing. “We’ll do reconnaissance tomorrow.”
Tumblr media
You finish your supper as your lady enters the room. “House is busy tonight. You’re taking the next caller.”
“I’m not putting up with any funny business.”
“Try to be desirable for a change. And stop scaring away the customers.”
“They’re dreadful and disgusting.”
“And pay well”
You scoff at her. “I’ll be in my room.”
“You scare off one more customer and I’m selling you.”
“Wouldn’t be the first time!” you call over your shoulder as you walk to your room in a huff. You wish to slam the door as hard as possible but she was right, you could hear your sisters all working. The sounds of men groaning come from every corner of the house and it would be unwise to create a ruckus on such a bustling evening.
You sit at your looking glass and brush out your hair. You allow it to fall down your back and tickle your neck before you lean forward to apply a small dusting of blush and smear rice water cream over your lips to soften them. Just as you finish, you hear your door begin to open. You look up to a stout man entering your room and raking in your appearance with obvious hunger. You felt your stomach tighten at the thought of entertaining him but you plastered on a sweet simper and move to sit on the mattress, patting the place next to you.
Meanwhile downstairs Konan approaches your misses.
“Excuse me ma’am. Would you happen to be selling any of your girls?”
“Who’s asking?”
“I am.” Tobi’s tenor voice crashes over the lady as her mouth falls open in fear upon seeing the masked man with the glowing red eye. She realizes her state and quickly closes her mouth while wiping her hands on the front of her dress. “No, I am not selling any of my girls.”
Across the home you hear a man shouting in terror “FIRE! FIRE! HELP THERE’S A FIRE”
“...Except for that one.” she finishes with rage.
Tobi and Konan immediately head towards the shouting to check on the source of the commotion. Upon entering the room they see a beautiful young woman with hair fallen around her face and a disheveled kimono open in the front, exposing both breasts and her pelvis.
“Oh relax” you say, weaving hand signs for your water style cannon to extinguish your phoenix flowers. “Now go, and don’t come back. We don’t need your type around here.”
“Yes we do!” your mistress chimes in, pushing Tobi and Konan to the side to scold you for your behavior.
“No we don’t! He’s a pig! And who the hell are they?!” you say gesturing towards the cloaked shinobi.
“Your next customer”
“Absolutely not.”
“Well that’s too bad cause they intend on purchasing your worthless hide.”
“Like hell they’ll take me.”
You weave the tiger sign to once more scare away these newcomers with your phoenix flower flames only to be met with a ginormous fireball to the face. Quickly you switch your jutsu to water style to combat the masked stranger when he voluntarily stops.
Your hair falls in your suddenly sweaty face as you gauge the man before you.
“My, my. Aren’t we a feisty one? And a user of ninjutsu as well. That’s a first.”
“I’m not interested.”
“Well too bad for you because I am. Konan, give the lady the money.”
“Good, take this ungrateful slut off my hands. Maybe you can knock some sense into her. I don’t need my house set ablaze every other day. I’m done.”
You feel your chest constrict with anger and sadness. To be cast aside, demoted to the value of a coin, yet again, and be forced to go to a new home once more. What’s more, is your tricks won't work on this one. He can out master your flames. You give a panicked look to the one with a paper flower atop her head before your teary eyes stare up into the dark hole of the orange mask.
A gloved hand glides up and cups the bottom of your chin, “Don’t get soft on me now kitten. I enjoy the spark.”
You rip your face away from his hand but he grabs you by the arm. “Konan, test her out for me, please. If you like her we’ll keep her, if you don’t we’ll kill her.”
The sadness in your heart quickly spins to fear as you realize how dangerous your new owner must be.
“But sir-”
“You said you had pent up urges.”
“I-”
“What? Were you going to ride the face of that Pain puppet? That seems a bit chilly, don’t you think? Why not try someone with a little more body heat?”
The pain and insult were obvious on Konan's face but she did as she was told and approached you.
With cold and hooded eyes she demands, “Knees.”
You swallow, remembering his words. There was no way out of this one. You were going to have to do what you were trained for and earn your keep…along with your life.
‘You’re the whore; you know what to do”
Your hands rifle past the noir cloak and find the ties of her pants. You pull the skin tight spandex down past her knees and gently lift her leg to tenderly slide the fabric over her ankle and off her foot.
The pants now removed, your hands hold open the front of her cloak similar to your open kimono. You lift yourself off the heels of your feet and bring your mouth to the front of her cotton panties. You kiss her heat over the cloth before your teeth find the waistband and pull down.
“Good girl.” you hear the masked man purr from the entrance of the room.
One hand slides under the thick bamboo fabric of the scarlet and black cloak to graze over her cheek and sink your fingers into the soft flesh of her behind while your other hand wanders up her pale inner thigh, finding her labia and slipping two fingers up into her slit.
Grip tightening on the muscle of her rear, your fingers thrust in and out, hooking inside her squishy insides, feeling how they tighten around your digits. Once she gasps you pull them out and look up at her face before wrapping your lips around your fingers and sucking them clean. The taste was sweet, almost like a baked treat and your lids flutter slightly before she grabs a large section of your hair and pulls you up to your feet.
“Arms folded behind you and lay down on your back.”
You do as she instructs and find her crawling up on the mattress to straddle your face. Her robes fall over your head and you are plunged into darkness, completely blinded by the cloak.
As her weight pushes against your face, you open your mouth to kitten lick at her entrance made wet by your foreplay.
Just as you open wider to sink your tongue between her lips she reaches back and pinches your nipples earning a cry from you that vibrates against her folds. A satisfied hum can be heard from the place where the masked man stood and you knew he approved.
You jab your tongue out as far as you can and stroke forward inside her heat, slurping up her juices with loud wet sounds. Her hips rut against your face as satisfied signs leave Konan’s chest. You wrap your lips around her little nub at the front of her entrance and rub the tip of your tongue back and forth along the bump.
Her legs close around your head before suddenly releasing. She repositions herself so that she is facing down your body rather than towards the head of the bed and as she sits back down, your nose prods against the crevice between her cheeks.
With better access to her swollen bud you seal the perky tip between your pillowy lips and suck. Her thighs squeeze against your body and she weaves hand signs so that two paper butterflies appear and fold into clips. They flutter towards your nipples and you feel their wings brush against your skin before the clip on their bellies opens and traps your sore nipples between them.
You squirm and whine at the discomfort but really it causes you to clench around nothing. Your legs kick out feeling desperate to get up but your mouth obediently continues to pet her clit.
Konan lifts her hand and brings it down harshly between your legs, slapping your folds and protruding clit.
You scream, the vibrations tickling between her legs causing her to lower more of her weight onto your head. Your legs snap closed. “No you don’t.” she says smooth as butter. Grabbing one of your legs in her arms, she holds your leg against her chest and continues her assault on your folds.
Her rutting against your face as you scream causes the noises to come out muffled and broken which only makes Tobi’s member stiffen in his pants. The spectacle of your squirming beneath his comrade mesmerized him and he knew he wanted you to himself.
You open your mouth wide to drag your tongue all the way from the hood of her clit, along the front of her entrance and point it as it enters her heat where you dance it in and out of her hole causing her to fall forward and rest her weight on the hand pushing into your waist.
The butterfly clips attached to the tips of your breasts tightened the more you please the female ninja, who eventually falls all the way forward and returns the favor, sucking on your own swollen nub till your legs shake with pleasure.
The harder she sucked, the harder you sucked, till you feel her gush on your face and both of you collapse from orgasm. She dismounts, panting from the feeling and nods at her masked counterpart. “This one will do.”
“Well, well, looks like you’re coming with us after all.”
Before you had a moment to realize the meaning of his words you feel yourself being pulled forward and suddenly you are in a dark gray abyss filled with large chunky blocks. You look around realizing it is just you, naked, aside from your small kimono that you pull over your shoulders for comfort. You are standing there alone, all by yourself, with no idea where you are or how you got there.

Girl got a gun
What happens when a particularly dangerous situation forces you to face your feelings for the man that was only supposed to be your arranged husband?
MafiaBoss!RegulusBlack x MafiaBoss!Reader
Warnings: blood, slightly descriptive murder, gun violence.
Nothing is really described in too much detail, but I thought best to put some warnings anyway. Enjoy 💗
Clink.
Clink.
Clink.
That was the only noise resonating in the air. The heels of your shoes making contact with the marble floor of your house.
Your shoulders slouched just the tiniest bit as you stepped foot in the living room.
You were tired of dealing with stupid men all day. Men that didn’t recognize your position in the business.
‘I'm really sorry Mrs Black, but we were told that your husband would be the one hosting the meeting.’
‘Well, it’s my properties we are discussing here. And Mr Black was busy’
‘But Mrs Black-’
‘It’s Miss Y/l/n, Mr Malfoy. I didn't take my husband's name, and I never will.’ you said coldly.
Silence fell in the room.
‘It doesn’t matter Miss, you’re part of the Black family now, therefore all your belongings are now in the hands of Mr Black’
You were starting to get pissed, your expression hard.
You took out your phone with a sigh and started dialing a number that became very familiar in the span of the past two years.
Behind you James and Remus exchanged a knowing glance.
One ring.
They had been with you for the past seven years and they knew you like the back of their hand. They knew shit was about to go down.
Two rings.
Three rings.
‘Yes, darling ?’
That voice made everyone freeze, sitting straight like he was there with them.
Their eyes now held a veil of worry and fear.
The corners of your mouth perked up a little, but, at the same time, a feeling of anger settled in the pit of your stomach.
Why couldn’t they respect you like they respected your husband ?
You quickly let the feeling fade. It wasn’t the time.
‘Sorry to bother, Regulus dear. These gentlemen here are asking why you’re not the one hosting the meeting. They’re saying that since I'm married to you all my properties and belongings are now yours.’
You said looking straight at Lucius Malfoy. You were too kind to tell him the exact names of the people that were making your day very difficult, otherwise you knew Regulus would’ve done something about it. But you needed all of them to be alive and with all four limbs so that the business would run smoothly.
‘Well, love, even if you’re married to me your family businesses and properties are still yours. I don't have any desire to steal your righteous spot as the head of the Y/l/n family. Everything is and will remain under your name. That is why you are the one hosting the meeting, as you righteously should’
The smirk on your lips turned into a pleased smile.
Before you could add something else and say goodbye his voice filled the vast room again.
‘Why ? Do these gentlemen have a problem with that ?’ he asked in a firm tone, sharp at the edges.
Your smile grew seeing the panic in their eyes.
They started to vehemently shake their heads.
‘No, honey. Don’t worry. Just a quick explanation to clear any doubt.’
Their shoulders relaxed a bit after the words left your mouth, but the look of anxiety never fully disappeared from their eyes.
‘Sorry if I bothered you, I’ll go now. Let you focus on your work’
A light chuckle could be heard from the other line.
‘You could never bother me, love’ he said warmly. You could hear the soft smile on his lips.
The curve on your mouth was now a little timid, but you made sure not to let the men in front of you see that.
‘I'll leave you to it now. See you at home, dear’ you said, your tone a bit softer despite yourself.
‘See you later, baby’
The pet name made your stomach churn, but, again, you pretended like nothing happened.
You were about to hang up when he spoke again.
‘Oh, before I forget, I suggest to all the gentlemen present in the room not to question my wife ever again. Or I promise there will be consequences‘ his voice now completely firm and intimidating.
And with that he hung up.
Mr Malfoy visibly swallowed.
But he clearly wasn’t the only one being affected by Regulus’ words.
No one dared to utter a word after the call, and the meeting went on smoothly.
Two years ago you would’ve never thought of getting married.
You were only twenty, the only thing on your mind was to finish college and then enter the family business.
But being part of one of the most powerful families in England was a tough job.
You were the youngest child, so, technically, you weren’t expected to run the business, but life, as you were about to learn, never went as you planned to.
In the span of two years you lost both your brother and your father.
Your mother had died when you were five. You didn’t remember a lot of it, but there was an image stuck in your brain of a bullet being shot in her head right in front of you and blood everywhere. At least it was a recurring dream, but you could swear you remembered the sensation of your skin and clothes being covered in the red, metallic liquid.
Your father had always tried to convince you that it was just a dream, a nightmare, but you could see the pain in your brother’s face every time you talked about it.
You were young but you weren’t stupid.
Your father spoiled you growing up, he gave you everything you wanted, you just had to mention it. But toys, clothes and jewelry weren't things you really wanted.
You wanted to be part of the family business and not be just a spoiled, little girl who came from a rich and powerful family.
Your brother trained you for this. You had asked him the day of your 14th birthday. Surprisingly he agreed. He thought you needed to know how to defend yourself, and he also knew that your brain could be a wonderful weapon.
What you didn’t expect was your brother being taken away from you when you were eighteen.
His body was found in the back of one of the casinos your family owned, his head split in two by a bullet and his throat slit. An execution.
At that time the world collapsed on you, your main firm point had been killed and you were lost. He had always been by your side, no matter what. And now he just wasn’t here anymore.
Getting back up wasn’t an easy task, but you were a Y/l/n and you needed to pull your shit back together.
Luckily, James and Remus were there for you. They had been your bodyguards for four years, and they became a constant in your life. Even though they were so young, the same age as you really, they were the best at their job.
They helped you with your training when your brother died, just like your father had instructed them. You spent so much time with them that you considered them your friends more than your bodyguards.
Things started to get better after some time, but just as you thought you were finally doing fine, the news of your father's illness made all of your hopes crumble.
A few months before he passed away he had called you in his room and to give you the news.
He wanted you to get married.
To the youngest of the Blacks.
You had refused, at first. Marriage wasn’t on your mind at that moment, especially not an arranged one.
You knew about the Ancient and most Noble House of Black, everyone knew who they were. One of the most influential and powerful families in England, if not in the whole United Kingdom.
But your father had begged you.
‘Y/n, please think about it. I am dying, this is the reality and everything will be in your hands when the day comes’
‘So you don’t think that I could make it on my own ?’
‘Oh, sweetie, I'm more than sure of it’
He said with a proud but tired smile.
‘Then why ?’
‘I want you to be safe, and he could be a big help with that’
‘I know how to defend myself, dad. And I also have Remus and James’
‘I don’t mean safe in that way’
A confused frown appeared in your face
‘Y/n, this…business is dangerous. I didn't expect you to be in the middle of it at all. Your brother was meant to take over one day, but unfortunately the day never came and it will never come, so it’s your turn now. And I know that you will do a wonderful job, but I can't let you do it alone. You need someone on your side, someone who you can trust blindly when I cannot be there anymore.’
‘And you think Regulus Black could be that person ?’
Saying that you were skeptical was an understatement.
‘Yes, I firmly believe that. He’s been one of my most trusted collaborators, I am sure he will treat you right. He promised me.’
Your head snapped up, eyes on him.
‘You talked to him before talking to me ?’
Your father sighed.
‘I had to. I had to make sure he would accept and that he would be the right choice’
You stared at him in disbelief.
‘And he agreed ?’ you asked bewildered.
‘He did. Without hesitation’
‘So this is already decided’ you sighed, defeated.
‘I am sorry, sweetheart. I must make sure that you are safe and protected under all aspects’
So that's how you found yourself betrothed to Regulus Black.
At the beginning you hated the idea, but then you gave it some thought.
You knew how the mafia world worked. Everything was about respect and power. Regulus Black had both, while you were just a spoiled little girl who had just inherited all of her father's businesses.
In the end, you decided, you could’ve used his help.
The first time you met was a week after your talk with your father.
You knew Regulus by fame. He was the youngest of his family, being only 23 years old, but he was the one ruling it, taking Sirius Black's, his older brother, place as he,  apparently, had a very smart brain and an inclination to persuasion. He was clever, ambitious and incredibly resourceful. He was a rouler, a king.
You had also heard about his looks, his appearance being the center of a lot of the  gossip you heard in the clubs. Voices of ebony black curls and eyes that resembled the coldest and grayest of storms.
So you had expected someone good looking.
What you had not expected was that he was more than good looking.
The man in front of you was handsome, gorgeous even.
He looked like he could’ve been part of the most majestic of frescos if he hadn’t been right in front of your eyes in flesh and bones at that moment.
But you didn’t let his appearance deceive you. It didn’t matter if you found the man beautiful, you needed to trust him above all.
‘Miss Y/l/n it’s a pleasure to meet you’
His voice was smooth and almost honey-like, very calm and composed.
‘Please, you can drop the formalities Mr Black, we’re gonna be married soon anyway. You can call me Y/n’ you said, extending your hand for him to shake. A formal greeting.
‘I believe this is the reason you wanted to meet. Oh, and, please, call me Regulus’
He took your hand in his, shaking gently. The smile on his face could only be described as sincere.
His hands were delicate and smooth with slender fingers adorned by several rings.
Certainly not what you expected from the hands of a mafia leader.
‘Yes, there are certain things that I would like to discuss with you before the wedding. If i am allowed’
A curious expression appeared on his face as he tilted his head slightly to the side.
‘You are always allowed to say whatever is on your mind Miss Y/l/n’
Your eyebrows lifted the slightest bit in surprise. You hadn’t expected the youngest of the Blacks to be this…polite.
You had expected a young, spoiled brat who had too much power and liked to play with it. You thought he would tell you to follow his rules and nothing more.
You certainly didn’t expect him to be this condescending.
‘I accept to become your bride…’ you started, but he sensed that you probably weren’t finished.
‘But…’ he added.
He definitely understood that there was something more.
So you went on.
‘But...there are conditions’
You met his eyes and you were surprised to find them already focused on you.
They were calm, collected, if not a little warm. A stark contrast with their gray hue.
‘Please tell me. I’ll do whatever is in my power to make sure your needs are met’
For a moment you just stared at him, studying him. And you were surprised to find nothing but honesty in his eyes.
So you went back to talking.
‘I want to keep my family name’
That was important for you. You were about to become the head of the family, and you didn’t want anyone else's name on the properties. It was also the only thing that would keep you connected to your family after the wedding. Officially you would’ve become part of Noble house of Black, but you still wanted to have power over what was yours. Which brought you the second point.
‘And I will maintain the power over my businesses’
Another important thing was maintaining your position as the boss. The main reason you accepted to get married was because he would help you maintain your status, not to give your title to him. That was not negotiable.
After that you remained silent. You wanted to let him think, but not even ten seconds later he spoke.
‘Is that all ?’
He asked calmly, with genuine curiosity in his voice. His hand propped under his chin supporting his head, elbow on the table. The stance made him look even more attractive than he already was.
Then his eyes landed on yours and he gave a tiny nod.
‘I agree to both’
Your eyes widened a little as the words left his mouth. Of course you hadn’t expected him to just refuse on the spot, but those were requests that could cost him some of his power and possibly the loyalty of some of his collaborators, especially as the head of the family, and a loss of properties. And yet he didn’t hesitate to agree.
Maybe your father was right. Regulus Black could be trusted.
You could see the faces of the men accompanying Regulus behind him, and they seemed rather amused by the whole thing.
Suddenly a phone started ringing.
Only when his gaze landed on your figure they softened the tiniest bit.
Regulus patted the left side of his jacket to fish out a phone from the inner pocket. Looking at the contact name his face changed radically. His soft and gentle features hardened, jaw tense and eyes suddenly cold.
‘Excuse me Miss Y/l/n, apparently my brother needs me’
You nodded and he brought the phone to his ear.
‘Sirius. Yes. Ok. Then find a solution. Fine, I'll be there in twenty. Try to handle it while I’m on the way’
And then he hung up.
‘I’m really sorry Y/n, but there is an important matter that suddenly came up’
‘Of course, I understand’
You both stood up and with a handshake you said your goodbyes.
But before he could walk out of the room you called his name.
‘Regulus ?’
He turned around.
‘Yes ?’
‘I am putting my trust in you. Don’t make me regret it’
A small smile appeared on his lips. His eyes held a warm look.
‘I promise you won’t, Y/n’
And with that he left.
The day of your wedding wasn’t how you had expected it. Just a small ceremony with the Black family and the Y/L/N family, or what remained of it, united. No vows, no kissing the bride, no big ceremony.
Just a formula pronounced by the priest and then the blood oath. A union that could not be broken. Both you and Regulus cut the palm of your hands with a sacred knife, then shook hands so that your blood could mix together and form a bond stronger than any ring.
That was the day your life changed.
For the better or for the worse you couldn’t tell.
You started taking care of the family business, attending meetings, keeping everything on track, lots of travels to go and meet all of your father’s international collaborators and, apart from the occasional fights that happened at the clubs and people (men) constantly questioning your position as boss just because you were a young woman, you were handling it well.
What you weren’t handling the best way was your role as a wife.
You and Regulus started to get to know one another by force of things. Living in the same house you couldn’t ignore each other for too long, and it sure wasn’t your intention. You were married to him, you couldn't ignore each other till the end of your days.
And so thought he.
At the beginning it was a bit awkward.
Sharing space with a person you didn’t really know was less than pleasing, but with the passing of time it became easier. You slowly learned each other’s habits and routines, likes and dislikes, for example how he loved his coffee black with two spoons of sugar, because despite being a cold hearted mafia boss he had a huge sweet tooth, or how when he was stressed he started rubbing his left temple. Never the right, always the left.
Or how he fidgeted with his rings when he was thinking.
For you, sleeping was especially uncomfortable. You had always slept alone, so suddenly sharing a bed with another person made you feel slightly uneasy. You didn’t sleep much during the first month, only being able to fall asleep out of exhaustion after a week of staying up every night.
But then you got used to his presence beside you, almost turning the tables because after nine months of living together the only nights you couldn’t sleep were the one where he was out dealing with his business.
During those nights you missed the feeling of having him by your side, telling you how his day had been, or when your arms would brush by mistake, sending shivers down your spine.
Your relationship was peculiar, to say the least.
At the beginning of your marriage you decided to adopt a strategy so that anyone would believe that you were a close-knit couple. And that’s how the pet names started.
What better way to show somebody that you were in love ?
At the top of the list there would’ve been physical touch, but neither you nor Regulus were fans of PDA, so pet names would do.
You used them especially during calls. It was rare for you to be both at the same meeting, but when you needed each other's opinion a call was more than welcome.
At the beginning they didn't affect you, it was just a strategy to show that you were close and powerful together, that now you were one.
But when you started to get to know Regulus things changed.
Your feelings changed.
Because he was the first to actually take your thoughts and opinions to consideration, he was the first one to ask for your ideas. You discussed things together, you were equals.
Your view of him started to change.
He was kind to you, he always made sure that you were comfortable and understood, he had the kind of sarcasm that would make you laugh so hard that you couldn’t even feel your cheeks.
So it wasn't a surprise to you when you started to feel a certain warmth when he called you ‘baby’ or ‘love’ or any other endearment, or when you were in the kitchen and he lightly put his hand on the small of your back to pass behind you, or when you stared at each other for a little too long, or when his hand found yours during dinner and galas to make sure that you were always by his side.
Small touches became ordinary, an everyday thing, a sign that you were more than comfortable with the other's presence.
One thing you never did in two years of marriage, though, was kissing.
Your lips never touched, not even at the altar.
Both of you knew that what was between you two wasn't a marriage of convenience anymore. The things you both felt for the other were definitely something more than that, the little touches, the longing stares, the need to protect each other. It was more than what it used to be.
But, no matter what, you had never kissed. It felt like crossing a line of some sort, and, apparently, neither of you was ready for that.
The leaders of two of the most powerful mafia families of the United Kingdom acted like middle schoolers around each other because they were both cowards.
Funny, wasn’t it ?
The good thing was that now, you considered the house you shared together your home.
At first it was hard. It was a new place for you, and you had to share it with a person  you didn't really know. It felt more like hell on earth. But after two years you could finally consider the place your home.
The same home you had just returned to. With your shoulders slightly slouched because of the anger and tension of your meeting with all those shitty businessmen that couldn't seem to respect you, you took off your heels, feeling the cold floor beneath your feet. You headed to your bedroom to take off the dress you were wearing, and to put on something more comfortable.
Looking at the clock on your nightstand you noticed it was way past eight. Regulus’ meeting was supposed to end at seven forty. You furrowed your eyebrows.
He must have stayed a little bit longer to talk with the Prewett siblings who were close friends of yours.
You walked to the kitchen, deciding to cook something.
You were starving and you were sure Regulus was too.
As soon as you started chopping the vegetables you heard the door open.
Regulus was home.
"Hey Y/n" he said. His voice was unusually breathless and almost pained.
You turned around still chopping the carrot on your tray.
"Hi, I'm making something to eat so-"
The words died in your throat when you took in his figure and noticed his state.
He was covered in blood.
It was on his shirt, his pants, jacket and shoes.
Even his face hadn’t been spared as the little stains and smudges of red blood contrasted with the fair complection of his skin.
Your heart stopped beating for a second.
"Oh fuck, Reggie" you didn’t even notice the nickname leaving your lips, breath knocked out of your lungs as you dropped the knife and ran to him.
"What happened ? Are you hurt ?"
You didn't even let him speak, you started analyzing his body looking for wounds, scratches, bullet holes, even the smallest of paper cuts would’ve sent you spiraling in that moment.
You hoped to find none of those.
"Hey, hey" he stopped your hands from roaming his chest, taking them in his.
"Hey, look at me"
His voice was rather calm for the situation you were in.
You locked eyes with him, saying nothing and everything at the same time.
"I’m fine" he assured you, keeping eye contact.
"But, the blood-"
"The blood is not mine, love. Don’t worry"
The endearment would've made you blush if he hadn't been dripping blood on your floor.
But that was not the main focus at that moment.
"Did someone attack you ?" you asked.
It wasn't uncommon for some rival families to organize attacks to the clubs you owned or to some of your minor collaborators, but no one ever tried to attack the head of the clan. It would’ve been too risky, too reckless. Basically a suicide.
Apparently things were changing.
He nodded to your question.
"An ambush"
You sighed.
"Where ?"
"We were on the road, no specific place"
"Any pattern that could lead to a specific clan ?"
"None that i noticed"
"Did they follow you ?"
"Almost certainly"
"Are you hurt ?" you asked, blood pumping fast in your veins. You knew there were people on their way to come and kill both of you probably, but you needed to make sure that he was alright.
"Y/n that's not-"
"Are you hurt ?" you asked again a little louder. Your tone firm and steady.
"No, I am not hurt" he answered, looking straight into your eyes, hands on your cheeks as his thumbs started stroking gently.
"Ok, we need to hide before-"
Regulus never managed to finish his sentence because bullets started flying right into your kitchen.
You both ducked under the furniture, hoping it would protect you just long enough to get your weapons out.
"Third drawer on the left !” you shouted.
Regulus stood a little bit, just enough to move his feet and drag himself near the drawer, taking out your only chance of survival.
"Baby !" he shouted above the sound of bullets flying above your heads, throwing you a gun.
You didn't pay too much attention to the pet name, your lives were at risk.
He took a gun as well and put two loaders in the pockets of his pants, throwing you two more.
You both loaded your guns and then all hell broke loose.
You shot two men right in the head, wounded another one on the shoulder while Regulus finished him, then killed two other men.
But they were too many for just two people, even if the people were as skilled as you and your husband.
"We need cover !" Regulus screamed.
He was right, you would've never come out alive if it was just you two.
You hoped James and Remus had their phones with them.
Lucky for you James answered immediately.
"Miss Y/l/n, is everything alright ?" he asked.
Jesus, how many times did you have to tell him to drop the formalities ?
"Not really, James. They’re shooting us."
"Hang in there, Y/n. Remus and I are coming"
"Hurry up, please. We're running out of ammos"
"Give us five minutes"
"You have three"
And then you hung up.
You turned to Regulus who had just dodged a bullet and had planted another two in one of the man's head.
This wasn't exactly how you imagined your day would end, covered in blood and with bullets risking to kill you every five seconds.
You were so lost in your thoughts for a moment that you hadn't noticed a gun pointed directly at you from afar.
The only thing you heard was the sound of a bullet being fired, but it never came.
Regulus’ inhumanly fast reflexes prevented you from being hit.
He launched himself onto you, tackling you on the floor right behind the island of the kitchen.
As soon as you understood what had happened, you turned to your husband who was now sitting beside you.
"Shit, Reggie, are you hurt ? Did he get you ?" you asked frantically, panic in your eyes and voice as you cradled his face in your hands, tracing his cheeks with your thumb in a frenzy.
He looked at you with a look that you couldn't read, he was staring directly at your soul.
He didn't say anything, didn’t talk.
He just took your hands in his and placed them on his chest, right above his heart.
A confused look adorned your features.
“No” he breathed simply “no, they didn’t”
And it felt like you could breathe again.
You let out a long exhale, and you could feel your eyes start to water, tears threatening to roll down your cheeks at the mere thought of losing Regulus.
But he was fine.
He was in front of you, and he was fine.
He was alive.
And then, like he was hit by a sudden epiphany, he lifted his arms to gently stroke your cheeks, before crashing your lips together in the most urgent, earth shattering kiss you had ever had.
Your brain didn’t have time to process what was happening because your body responded first, and what could you do if not kiss him back, just as strongly, just as fiercely, like it could be your last kiss ever.
You couldn’t hear guns shooting anymore, there were no more bullets flying around, everything was suddenly muted, just white noise surrounding the two of you.
When you pulled back the world started spinning again, the noise and the battle surrounding you filling your ears, but his hands never left your face.
It could’ve been the end of the world and wouldn’t have given less than a shit.  There were just his lips on yours, his hand on your cheek and your hearts beating together.
"I’m sorry, I had to do it. Even just once, before I died" he said, eyes still glued to yours.
“Don’t you even dare say that word Regulus, don’t you even fucking think about it” you said through gritted teeth, voice shaking.
The hand on your cheek went to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear as his thumb stroked your cheekbone softly.
“You have nothing to worry about, my love" he whispered with a smile on his face "I can't die before I get to taste your lips again”
You let out an incredulous chuckle, your shoulders shaking despite yourself.
“I hate you” you said, not an ounce of hatred in your voice.
“And i love you” he said, like it was the easiest thing in the world, like you weren’t surrounded by people who wanted you dead, like the place you had started to consider your home wasn’t being destroyed by bullets and guns.
You were almost sure you heard James and Remus shout your name, a clear sign that they had arrived.
And yet you couldn’t focus on anything else that wasn’t the man in front of you, a man you never expected to fall in love with. He hadn’t been part of your perfectly programmed life before everything went to shit. He was brought into your exitence when you needed him the most, and now you weren’t sure if there was even a life without him in it.
You liked to think that your father knew what he was doing when he chose him to be your future husband. He had always had a talent for reading people.
“I love you, too” you said, just like that. As simple as a breath of fresh air.
Such a mob boss thing to do, confessing your feelings in the middle of flying bullets and blood.
But it didn’t matter, because Regulus' eyes became the softest you had ever witnessed, and the smile on his face was genuine. Just for you.
It died down quickly when you heard the gunfire getting closer to you.
His face lost every trace of softness, becoming cold, calculating and focused.
“Stay here and give me cover. Don’t let them see you” he said, kissing your cheek before sliding smoothly on the other side of the kitchen island.
You nodded.
“I swear, if you die I'm gonna kill you” you told him, looking him directly in the eyes.
“Doesn’t sound very logical, baby. But I'll try my best not to” he said as the corner of his lips lifted up in a smirk, before firing his gun and diving back into the battle.
A man appeared next to you, and, before he could even breathe, you put a bullet through his head.
You located another one aming right at Regulus with his weapon. You took the knife you had been using to cut the vegetables mere minutes earlier and shoved it right in his throat before he could pull the trigger.
You preferred bladed weapons over anything, but they weren’t really useful when your opponent had a gun.
You could see Remus and James taking out eight men at once, joined by Regulus’ bodyguards Barty and Evan.
You threw the knife right at a man’s heart, and shot two others right in their skull.
And then everything turned quiet.
No more shooting, no more screaming.
Just silence broke by your ragged breathing, and a bunch of bodies covered in blood on your floor.
For a heartbeat or two everything was silent, except for the ring in your ears and the furious thumping of your heart in your chest.
Suddenly you heard the bang of a gun.
Regulus-
You could see James and Remus in front of you, alive and breathing. Barty and Evan were a few steps away.
Regulus.
Your blood ran cold.
Your world stopped.
No.
No no no no no no no no.
“Next time you try to kill my wife think twice about it”
You turned around so fast that your neck might've as well snapped. But you didn't care because you had to see, you had to make sure that-
Regulus was alive.
He was alive.
And he wasn't bleeding.
He wasn't injured.
He was fine.
He was breathing.
Only then air filled your lungs again.
He was standing next to a man, hovering above him in all his height.
His gun was smoking and pointing at the man's arm which was now bleeding on the floor and stretched in your direction. He had tried to shoot you.
Regulus’ foot was right on his throat, expensive black shoe covered in red and pushing mercilessly down, making all the little bones crack.
His face was stone cold, not a sign of emotion in his features.
“Actually, how about you never think again at all”
With a swift motion Regulus directed the gun to the man's head, then pulled the trigger.
And, finally, everything was over.
There was blood everywhere, corpses on the floor, and you would clearly have to move from that house seeing the wreckage that was left of it.
But for now you didn't care.
For now everything that mattered was that Regulus was in front of you, just a few feet away.
Alive and breathing.
And that was enough.
You immediately dropped the gun you had been holding.
It fell with a loud ‘tunk’ as you ran towards the man that had stolen your heart without even trying to.
Your body collided with his in a desperate hug. Your arms flying to circle his neck, hands diving in his soft, ebony locks.
His arms were around your waist, holding you tight, like he never wanted to let you go.
And, well, neither did you.
You let go just enough to step back a little, to look into his eyes that were a color as cold as ice, but held so much warmth for you.
Your hands caressed his face, his found home on your hips, and in a flash, your lips collided.
And it was everything.
It was fireworks. The bloom of spring. The first summer rain. The taste of happiness.
The feeling of love.
All in a mouth so soft and sweet, and, at the same time, so urgent and needy.
Regulus’ mouth.
You wanted to melt, and maybe you did a little.
When your lips parted and your head tilted back a little, you were met with the most love-struck gaze you ever had the pleasure to witness.
A gaze you were sure matched with yours.
“Are you ok ?” he asked, running his eyes all over your face, and stepping back to check your body too.
“I'm fine, Reg, don't worry. Just some little scratches here and there” you reassured him, taking his hand into yours and slotting your fingers together “how about you ?”
“Me too, nothing to worry about” he said as he tightened the hold on your hand just the slightest bit.
‘I'm fine’ the gesture is meant to say ‘we are fine’.
And that was all you needed .
“I meant that” he suddenly spoke up, stopping in front of you.
Your eyebrow slightly furrowed in confusion.
Your hands were still laced together when your foreheads met with a gentle touch.
“When I told you that I love you. I mean that, I really do” his voice was barely a whisper, and it made you smile how vulnerable he sounded.
“I do, too. So much” you told him with the most sincere expression on your face.
He broke into a tiny smile.
You did, too.
And then you were kissing again.
And it got better every time.
“I can't believe it took you a near death experience to confess your love for each other” you heard Barty mumble from across the room.
“I suggest you shut up if you wanna keep your job, Crouch” Regulus warned him, but his voice lacked the bite completely.
Barty just rolled his eyes, as both you and your husband dived right back into a kiss.
“I need a raise” you heard Remus sigh, defeated, before everything tuned out.
Everything, except Regulus’ lips on yours.

warning: mentions of sexual relationships
when you parked your car at the coffee shop emily told you to meet aaron your heart pounded. you had no idea what was coming. all you knew was he was upset.
he had every right to be. you kept his kids from him. you didn’t even let him explain what emily saw. come to think of it, you didn’t even let emily explain.
as soon as you heard her utter the words ‘i saw hotch and haley in his office’ you ended the call. you couldn’t hear anymore. but knowing what you do now, you felt you deserved everything coming to you.
spotting aaron sitting at a table you take a deep breath and head inside. you sit right across from him and give him a small smile.
aaron hands you a cup. “decaf still, right?”
you hum as you take a sip. “thank you.”
the two of you sat in silence for a minute. it felt longer though. you missed him. everything about aaron you missed. you missed the way he smelled, his beautiful smile, the way he made you laugh, the way he listened. you missed his touch.
his touch,
god did you miss the way aaron touched you. rather it would be as simple as holding your hand or the way he would hold you when you fucked.
aaron could be a gentle lover. he would whisper sweet nothings in your ear as he made love to you. tell you how beautiful you were and how good you were to him.
but he was also rough! if he got a little jealous or you two argued about something so minor, he’d fuck you like you meant absolutely nothing to him! and you loved it.
you tried not to think too much about it, but you noticed he has been working out. his muscles were bulging more than before.
you also noticed he still wore his wedding band. something you felt a sense of pride in. despite being divorced he still showed everyone he was taken. even if it weren’t true.
you did the same. you loved aaron. knowing you could never move on from the man that gave you the best years of your life and the three, four babies you adored! nothing would ever change that. if wearing the ring meant you would never be with anyone else again, you were okay with that.
“should we start?”
you didn’t know what to say. just humming as he cleared his throat.
“i made a promise to you i would love you unconditionally. i married you because i meant every single word. and i would never intentionally hurt the woman i love. i broke that vow by having an emotional affair with my ex wife. i hugged her for too long, held her hand, kissed her cheek, even cuddled her from time to time. but i never went as far as sleeping with her. and i wouldn’t have blamed you if you wanted to divorce me after knowing the truth. instead you left. part of me kinda happy you did. foyet was after me and my family. it’s one of the reasons why haley and i reconnected. i needed him to see he could never break this family up. fortunately he didn’t know about you,”
“what do you mean?”
“i made sure the team kept you hidden from the moment we met. i didn’t need anyone to know i had remarried. if i could go back i would have done the same with haley.”
you wanted to hold his hand. you knew he was still grieving. haley was his first everything. completely losing her destroyed him. on top of losing you all in the span of a few months apart. he went through hell for the longest.
“after foyet died i tried finding you. i even tried to get penelope to trace you. she declined. i was very pissed i almost fired her. but she wanted to protect you. i couldn’t be mad at that,”
“aaron, im sorry. i—i thought with me out of the picture you’d be better off. i wanted you to be happy. i knew it would have been a hard decision if i stayed. i didn’t want you to choose me because i was pregnant. i wanted you to choose me because you loved me.”
“they’re my kids too yn! mine! you left knowing this. knowing that you were carrying our babies. i didn’t get to be there for them. i didn’t get to hold you hand while you gave birth, wake up all hours of the morning to feed them or change them, watch them start to crawl, watch them walk for the first time, i miss two birthdays yn!! two. you made that decision for me. you made the decision to leave and take our children with you. i—knowing this, finding this out from jj, i didn’t know how to feel.”
you turned your head guilty. you couldn’t look him in the eyes. you knew as soon as you did the tears would just come pouring out.
the two of you stayed silent for awhile. aaron clears his throat before speaking.
“i promised jack i would bring you home. please don’t break his heart again.” aaron states. he leaves money on the table before leaving you alone with your thoughts.
Tumblr media
when you arrived at your sister house you sigh. all you wanted to do was hug your babies. you missed them and needed a little comfort right now.
the moment you saw them playing with their cousins you smiled. they were the cutest. you always wanted them to know their older cousins.
“mamma!” izzy was the first to spot you. she waddles her way towards you.
“izzy!” you copied her.
“miss mamma.” she smiles at you.
“miss you too baby. you and your siblings.”
“up, mummy!” aurora raises her arms.
you gently pick her up. you missed when you use to be able to carry all three of them at the same time. now they were bigger and a lot heavier. you could only pick them up in twos.
you kiss aurora’s cheek as you son walks over to you. he pulls on your shirt. you bend down to his level and set your other two babies down.
“hows my shy boy?”
he shrugs his shoulders. you frown. you really wished he was a little more outgoing. but you couldn’t blame him. you were just as shy growing up. you still are.
you kiss theo’s cheek gently. “mama missed all three of her babies.” you hug your kids tightly. not too tight. but enough.
“mama! you being silly.” isabella laughs.
“oh, am i?!” you start to tickle them. she giggles uncontrollably. you laugh before kissing them on the forehead.
“why don’t you go play with your cousins while i talk to your aunt, okay?”
your three mini me’s walk over to their cousins as you walk towards your sister.
“so, how’d it go?”
you sigh. “as good as it could. he wants me to move back home.”
“you have a life here though. he can’t expect you to pack your bags and move three two year olds!”
“i don’t know abby. i did take two years away from him and the triplets. plus i have a son back home who misses me.”
“well are you two gonna at least work your shit out? because if not then what?”
you shrug. “i gotta at least try, yeah? you didn’t see abby! we both still have our wedding bands on. legally we’re divorced but mentally and emotionally we’re still married. i have to fight for my marriage.”
“i understand little sister. i just worry. with everything that just happened i don’t want you to spiral. plus, i just got you back. i don’t want you to leave.” abigale pouts.
“i know. but ill be back to visit!”
“promise?”
“swear it.”
you two continue to talk. catching up on everything you missed before you headed out to figure out your move.
Tumblr media
aaron had came by the next morning to help you pack and to meet the kids for the first time. he was nervous and excited all in one.
he knew what it was like to raise one child for nine years. now he was transitioning from one to four. he still couldn’t believe it.
he was a father of four. four beautiful kids who he adored. he already loved his babies. he couldn’t wait to raise them with you. and hopefully work your shit out to have more in the future.
when he arrived you weren’t shocked at all he had went shopping. he spoiled jack so much you just knew he’d spoil your other three.
“hi.”
“hey. come in! the kids are in their pen.” you opened the door wider to allow him inside. aaron smiles as he walks to the living room.
he got a bit of a glimpse of them the other day. seeing them face to face like this made him gasped. all three, beautiful as ever. you two made the cutest little babies.
“izzy, theo, roe! id like you to meet someone.” the three of them look up at their mom and sees a tall man. they had no idea who he was but he looked friendly.
“who’s that mamma?” izzy was the first to ask.
“remember how i told you daddy was off being a super hero and catching the bad guys? how he’d be back to take us home? well, he’s back. and he’s right there.”
“papa?” theo questioned.
aaron bends down. “that’s right! im your dad little buddy.”
“daddy!” izzy walked over to aaron and hugs him. aaron chuckled as he holds his daughter.
“love daddy.” aurora states.
aaron wanted to shed tears in that moment. but he held himself together and hugged all three of his kids as they walk over to him.
“goin home to brudder?” theodore asked.
“yeah. going home to brother.”
Tumblr media
slow burn but not too slow because i don’t have the time for the shit! i want them together!!!!!
but how did you guys like this part? i think it’s cute! had to put the babies in there. they’re adorable
peep aaron already planning to have more kids with the reader!!

We're Really Doing This
Rowaelin Month 2024, Day 28: Eloping @rowaelinscourt
Word count: 1.6k
Warnings: some swearing, innuendo
A/N: ✨happy birthday to me✨ here have a fun little elopement fic!! enjoy!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“And do you, Aelin Galathynius, take this man as your lawfully wedded husband?”
Aelin looked at Rowan, grasping his hands. “Are we really doing this?” she whispered, her breath hitching.
He grinned at her, eyes bright. “We’re really doing this.”
The officiant cleared his throat politely, and Aelin snapped her attention back to the ceremony. With a smile bright enough to shame the sun, she met Rowan’s gaze. “I do.”
~
Three Hours Earlier
“So, to clarify, you’re actively trying to give your entire family and his entire family a massive heart attack?”
“That’s exactly what we’re going for.” Aelin smirked at her best friend. “Are you in, maid of honor?”
“Hell yes!” Lysandra kicked her feet giddily. “We need to go find you a dress like, now!”
Aelin laughed. “One step at a time, Lys.”
“Bullshit.” The brunette leapt to her feet and caught Aelin’s hand. “I wasn’t expecting this at all, since you and your mom have been planning a big-ass wedding ever since you and Ro got engaged, but you go, girlie. And if it’s your wedding day, you need a dress. Now.”
“What if I told you I already have a dress?” Aelin and Rowan had gotten engaged just over a year ago, and Lys was right—practically since the day Aelin came home with that emerald glittering on her left hand, Evalin Ashryver had been in full event-planning mode.
Lys stopped in her tracks. “You do not.”
“Oh, I do.” Aelin’s grin turned wicked as she crossed the hotel room and opened the closet, revealing a garment bag that she unzipped. With a flourish, she pulled the dress out of the bag, and it unfurled in a spill of white silk.
“Holy fuck!” Lys stared at the sleeveless sheath dress, examining its beautiful tailoring and the slit running up one seam. “Where did you get that?”
“Ells knows people.” Aelin shrugged. Elide Lochan, another of her close friends and one of her bridesmaids, worked as a modeling agent, and she was always picking up clothes from various designers that she gave to her friends. “I had a few alterations done, and here we go.” She hung the dress up and picked up a smaller, flat box. “And I have my mom’s veil, so she can’t be too mad at me for defying tradition.”
Lys laughed at that. “I still stand by my heart attack statement.”
“Oh, you were a hundred percent right about that.” Aelin glanced over at her phone, where her notifications had been pinging for almost a whole minute. “Lys, what the fuck? Did you text the groupchat?”
“Of course I did!” Lys patted Aelin’s shoulder. “Just the one with you, me, Rowan, and Lorcan.”
“That’s marginally better.” Lorcan was Rowan’s best man, so the groupchat with just the four of them was where they handled most of the wedding details. Aelin looked at the string of texts. “Why is Lorcan asking if we have a limo?”
“We’re in Vegas, baby!” Lys beamed. “Why shouldn’t you get a limo?”
“Because they’re tourist traps, and before you say it, hell no. We’re not getting married by Elvis.”
Lys frowned. “What happened to your sense of adventure?”
“Ro and I already went and applied for a marriage license at the courthouse, and we have an appointment there later today.” Aelin flicked Lys’s shoulder. “We aren’t drunk enough to get married by some middle-aged man in a shitty Elvis suit.”
“Fair enough.” Lysandra rolled her shoulders. “All right, lady, you better have brought all of your hair and makeup stuff, because so help me gods, you’ll be the most glamorous bride in the courthouse.”
“I wouldn’t trust anyone else to do it.” Aelin grinned and opened up her makeup bag.
~
A good two hours later, she had her makeup done and her hair resting in rollers, lips held apart as the smudge-proof scarlet lipstick dried. Lysandra made her close her eyes as she sprayed her face with setting spray, and Aelin obediently sat and waited until Lys told her she could open her eyes and stand up. She looked at herself in the mirror, and she beamed.
“I love you, Lyssie.”
“Love you too, Aelie.”
Aelin wrinkled her nose. “Ugh, why? We’re not in college anymore.”
Lys snickered. “You said it first.”
“Oh, fine.” Aelin went over to the closet, dropped her robe, and let Lysandra help her into the dress, carefully sliding up the zipper in the back. She turned slowly, admiring the way the silk flowed over the lines of her figure, molded to her body. The slit climbed up her left leg, stopping at the middle of her thigh, and the heels she’d brought paired perfectly with the sleek look of the dress.
Behind her, Lys sniffled as she pinned the veil into Aelin’s curls. “You’re really a bride,” she murmured, and Aelin turned and flung her arms around her best friend.
“You’re the best maid of honor,” Aelin murmured thickly.
Lys managed a smile. “Of course I am.” She blinked back the sheen of her tears. “Let’s go get you married.”
She and Aelin went downstairs to the hotel lobby, and a car was waiting at the curb. They climbed into the back seat and went off to the courthouse, only a short drive from the hotel. As she hopped out of the car, Aelin looked across the limestone steps, a smile unfurling across her face when she saw Rowan and Lorcan standing shoulder to shoulder at the bottom of the stairs.
“Hey there, handsome,” she hummed, touching his shoulder.
He turned, and wonder suffused his face as he gawked at her in her wedding dress. “Holy gods, Fireheart,” he finally managed to say. “You’re so beautiful.”
She blushed under her makeup. “Thank you, love.” She swept a long look up and down his figure, appreciating the fit of his tux. “You look stunning, too.”
“Luckiest man in the world,” he murmured, holding out his hand. “Ready?”
“For you? Yes.” She tucked her hand into his, and they walked up the courthouse steps together.
They checked in at the reception desk in the lobby, and an aide led them back to a small, unassuming courtroom. It looked like an office, just with a small version of a judge’s bench in place of a desk. The placard on the desk read “Justice of the Peace,” meaning that the man behind the desk was officially authorized to perform weddings and other official duties. He greeted them and had Aelin and Rowan stand facing each other in front of the bench, with Lysandra and Lorcan a couple steps away as the witnesses. Hand in hand with Rowan, Aelin lost herself in his gaze as the officiant began the wedding ceremony.
~
“Do you, Rowan Whitethorn, take Aelin Galathynius as your lawfully wedded wife?”
Rowan’s eyes were soft and filled with love. “I do.”
“And do you, Aelin Galathynius, take Rowan Whitethorn as your lawfully wedded husband?”
Aelin smiled. “I do.”
They exchanged rings, Aelin sliding a steel-gray platinum band with an inlay of tiny rubies onto Rowan’s finger and Rowan slipping a gold band engraved with a subtle flame design onto Aelin’s finger, tucking it into place beside her engagement ring.
“With the authority vested in me by the state of Nevada, I hereby declare you husband and wife! You may kiss the bride.”
Rowan smoothly hooked an arm around Aelin’s waist and dipped her into a fervent kiss.
Behind them, Lysandra whooped, applauding vividly. Lorcan joined in, whistling lowly when Rowan finally pulled away and set Aelin upright on her feet. She was smiling brighter than he’d ever seen her smile, her joy warming his heart, and his smile matched hers.
“Hi, husband,” she whispered.
He kissed her again. “Hi, wife.”
Aelin raised her and Rowan’s hands into the air like a winning boxer as they walked out of the courthouse and down the steps. They climbed into the car that was waiting for them, Lys and Lorcan following, and they drove off to the hotel, where the families were gathered for what they thought was going to be an engagement party. Aelin’s mother had repeatedly questioned her daughter’s desire to hold her party in Vegas, but she begrudgingly agreed when Aelin told her that was where the bachelor and bachelorette trips were going to be.
Lorcan and Lysandra went into the hotel event space first, giving Aelin and Rowan a few minutes to themselves. She and Lys had planned it out during the drive—the best man and maid of honor would say some words of welcome, and when Aelin and Rowan were ready, they’d walk in and be announced as Mr. and Mrs. to everyone’s shock.
“Ready?” Rowan asked, wrapping one arm low around Aelin’s hips.
She flicked a sultry glance up at him. “I might need a few more minutes.” Even in her heels, she still had to rise up to kiss him, and in a blur of hazy kisses, she’d tugged him into the closest coat closet. It was empty except for some hangers, since nobody was wearing a jacket in Vegas, and he backed her swiftly against the shelves, his lips attached to her neck.
“Love you so much,” he murmured against her skin.
She wove her fingers into his hair. “Love you more, Ro.”
A fist thudded against the door, shattering their little bubble. “Break it up, you two,” Lorcan grumbled. “I’m not opening this door, but you might want to get your lovebird asses out here.”
“Jackass,” Rowan muttered.
Aelin snickered. “Thank you, Lor darling.”
“Gods above.” Lorcan left, probably rolling his eyes.
“We should go,” Aelin whispered, deftly tucking Rowan’s shirt back into place.
He raised a brow. “Do we have to?”
“I want to show you off, husband.” She kissed the corner of his jaw. “Please?”
“Anything for you, love.” He laced his fingers with hers and led her down the hallway and through the double doors into the event space, where their family and friends were gathered.
Lysandra leaned into the microphone in her hand as the couple walked in. “Mr. and Mrs. Whitethorn, everyone!” she whooped.
And the crowd went wild.
Love triangle PSH
“Girl just confess, I can see it, Sunghoon likes you, he’s here everyday to see you.” Kiara, Y/n’s sister asserted, looking at her with a teasing smile.
“And what if he doesn’t?” Y/n argued, looking at her sister with a worried smile.
“Oh come on, I’m sure he does,” Kiara assured her sister, earning an annoyed groan from Y/n as she laughed at her. “Come on, tonight, he told you he wants to tell you something right? Then let me help you with your dress and you’re confessing.” Kiara said, encouraging her sister.
Y/n and Sunghoon had been bestfriends since they were children, no one can separate them from each other, not even their parents, once they’re together you can’t separate them not until it’s very late at night. They went to the same school from when they were 3 years olds until university. Y/n developed her feelings for Sunghoon when she was 16 and now she’s 26, it’s been 10 years and she still doesn’t have the guts to confess to him, not even when her sister encourages her everyday to confess.
“Are you sure Sunghoon will like it?” Y/n asked, looking in the mirror, wearing a baby blue off shoulders dress.
“Don’t you trust me? I’ve been on various dates with my boyfriend and they go crazy for that type of dress.” Kiara responded, rolling her eyes to tease her.
“When are you getting married?” Y/n asked, raising her eyebrows up and down.
“Well, soon, very soon and he’s not my boyfriend, we’re engaged, remember,” Kiara responded.
Going downstairs they found Sunghoon already there, waiting.
“Damn, loverboy is early!” Kiara exclaimed, earning a playful smack from her sister as Sunghoon chuckled at them. “Well, my sister is yours, make sure she’s back before 12am,” she added, pushing her sister towards Sunghoon.
“I’ll make sure she’s back before 12am, because your parents will kill me if I don’t,” Sunghoon said, smiling as he glanced at their parents arguing in the kitchen.
Kiara laughed as she saw what Sunghoon was watching, it’s their parents fighting over a glass of water.
“You two be safe,” Kiara said, before she pushed them out of the house.
“I didn’t know you knew this type of place,” Y/n said, as she walked around the pretty garden, lights over the place.
Sunghoon watched Y/n as she walked around the garden happily, not forgetting to take pictures of her.
“Wait, what was it that you wanted to tell me?” Y/n asked, looking at Sunghoon, who’s still busy taking pictures.
“Uhmm later, Y/n pose there.” Sunghoon replied, smiling at her.
They walked around the garden, until they reached the end of it, and as they’re walking back to his car, Sunghoon cleared his throat, making Y/n stop.
“I have to tell you something,” Sunghoon said, looking at Y/n.
“I also have to tell you something,” Y/n replied.
“What is it?” Sunghoon asked.
“No, tell me what’s yours first,” Y/n said.
“No, ladies first,” Sunghoon argued, smiling.
“Let’s say it together.” Y/n suggested.
“Ok,” Sunghoon replied.
Y/n took a deep breath as Sunghoon counted to three.
“I like you,” “I like your sister,” They both said at the same time.
There was a long silence, Sunghoon looked at Y/n, trying to find the right words to tell her, to respond. He didn’t know, he never felt that way for her.
“I have to go,” Y/n said, running away from them.
“Y/n! Wait!” Sunghoon yelled as he ran after her.
Before he could reach her she already took a cab.
Kiara waited downstairs for her sister to arrive, watching the clock. When the time hit 12am Y/n slammed the door open as she stormed inside the house crying.
“What happened?” Kiara asked, worried.
“I don’t wanna talk about it,” Y/n said coldly, storming inside her room, closing it with a loud thud, making her parents come out of their room.
“What happened?” Their father asked.
“I don’t know, I’ll call Sunghoon.” Kiara replied as she went upstairs to call Sunghoon.
“What did you do to my sister?” Kiara asked over the phone.
“Did she arrive?” Sunghoon asked back.
“Sunghoon answer my damn question, why did my sister went back home crying? What the fuck did you do?” Kiara asked with anger in her voice.
“She confessed.” Sunghoon responded.
“And?” Kiara asked.
“I don’t want to say it over the phone,” Sunghoon argued.
“Goddammit Sunghoon, tell me!” Kiara yelled.
“I told her I like you!” Sunghoon yelled back over the phone.
“I’m fucking engage!” Kiara yelled, hanging up the phone to knock on her sister’s door.
“So you told Y/n, you liked his sister?” Jake asked Sunghoon, who nodded his head. “Are you fucking crazy!? I told you a million times she likes you!” Jake scolded Sunghoon who’s just looking at the floor.
“I don’t know what to do, Kiara hates me right now and Y/n isn’t taking any of my calls,” Sunghoon said as he ruffled his hair in frustration.
“So now you’re telling me she’s not taking your calls? Since when?” Jake asked, worriedness can be heard in his voice.
“1 week already,” Sunghoon responded.
“Did she tell you she’s sick?” Jake asked.
“No, why is she sick? Did she text you?” Sunghoon asked, worried.
“Sunghoon, she has a weak heart, did she not tell you that?” Jake asked, worried, taking out his phone to try and contact his father.
“She never mentioned being sick, nor her sister told me she’s sick, her parents never mentioned it either,” Sunghoon replied as he looked at Jake.
“My dad is not answering, how about you go to their house? See if she’s fine,” Jake suggested.
Sunghoon didn’t waste any second as he went out to go to their house.
“Please be fine,” Sunghoon whispered.
Arriving in front of their house, Sunghoon got out of his car, not caring if his car wasn't parked right. He knocked on the door loudly. The door opened and he saw Y/n’s father.
“Sunghoon, come in,” Mr. Kim said as he let him inside the house.
“Y/n is she alright?” Sunghoon asked, looking around, her door was closed shut.
“Kiara hasn’t told you?” Ms. Kim asked, coming out of the kitchen.
“Tell me what?” Sunghoon asked, worried.
“Come with us,” Ms. Kim said.
Sunghoon followed them into their car. The car ride was silent, Sunghoon looked outside the window, he’s scared, terrified, he’s feeling something he can’t describe.
“I heard Kiara is engaged,” Sunghoon uttered under his breath.
“She’s not engaged, Kiara likes you a lot but Y/n is very important to her, she had to lie and she asked us for help, so we helped her, so she won’t get sick.” Ms. Kim said as she watched Sunghoon looked down on his lap nervously.
“I’m sorry if I got her sick,” Sunghoon apologized.
“It’s not your fault son, you can’t control your feelings, if you like someone you like someone, you can’t stop your heart from feeling that,” Ms. Kim told him as she gave him a reassurance of a smile when he glanced at her.
“She’s fine right?” Sunghoon asked.
“She hasn’t woken up in 3 days,” Ms. Kim replied.
Sunghook looked down on his lap, letting his tears fall down as he apologized “I’m sorry,”
“Son, don’t worry about it, I’m sure once she hears your voice, she’ll open her eyes.” Mr. Kim said, smiling at him.
Arriving at the 2nd floor of the hospital, his heart ached as he read the sign in front of him, CCU (Critical Care Unit), Y/n’s father rubbed his back as he saw him tensing up. They guided him in front of her room, Kiara was sitting outside.
“What is he doing here?” Kiara asked, anger laced her voice.
“Kiara, calm down,” Ms. Kim said. “Sunghoon you can go in,” she added.
Sunghoon went inside her room, his tears fell down as he saw her, her weak body hooked into a different type of machine, her heart monitor showing how weak her heartbeats are, tube down her throat to help her breath, to help her live. Sunghoon sat down beside her bed, as he delicately took her left hand in his, his hands shaking at the feeling of her cold hand in his, as he successfully took her hand in his, he couldn’t help but sob.
“Oh god I’m sorry,” Sunghoon sobbed, kissing the back of her hand as he let his tears fall down. Apologizing. “Please wake up,” he sobbed.
His everyday life became like this, going to work, visiting Y/n, telling her stories from their childhood, apologizing, and their parents watch Sunghoon do it everyday.
“So how are you gonna tell him?” Ms. Park asked Y/n’s mom, watching how Kiara is crying hard.
“I don’t know, he’s gonna be here soon and we don’t know how to tell him.” Y/n’s mom sobbed as Mr. Kim hugged him.
“Did something happen?”
Turning around they saw Sunghoon, standing there with a bouquet of tulips. Sunghoon peeked and saw that Y/n is still hooked up on the machines. He shakily opened the door and approached Y/n. Their parents watched him give the tulips to Y/n, pecking her forehead as Y/n’s mom sobbing became louder.
“Ma’am we have to turn off the machines,” the nurse said approaching them.
Her parents nodded, coming inside the room with nurses behind them.
“Sunghoon, son,” his father called him.
Turning around he knotted his brow seeing nurses.
“What’s going on?” Sunghoon asked, holding Y/n’s hand tightly and as his mom saw it he couldn’t help but cry as he approached his scared son.
“Mom, what's going on?” Sunghoon asked again, looking at his mom as he held Y/n’s hand more tightly.
“Son listen to me, it’s been 6 months and like always they did her brain waves test to check her brain’s activity and there’s no more brain waves son,” his mom said, looking at his confused look.
“So?” Sunghoon asked.
“Sunghoon, she’s gone, she’s braindead,” Kiara said as Sunghoon diverted his attention to her, shaking his head.
“No, her heart’s beating, she's alive,” Sunghoon said, turning around from them as he tucked her in the bed, his hand shaking.
“Sir, the machines are making her heart beat, she’s on life support, once we turn it off her heart will stop beating,” one of the nurses explained.
“Then don’t remove it,” Sunghoon responded sternly.
Sunghoon’s father approached him and hugged him from the back to pry him off of her. “No! She’s fucking alive!” Sunghoon screamed.
“Y/n wake up please! I’m sorry! I know you’re mad at me but please don’t do this,” Sunghoon wailed, hugging her tightly. “Y/n please, please, wake up,” he sobbed. “Let me go!” Sunghoon yelled as he was pulled away from Y/n. “No, don’t kill her!” Sunghoon screamed, seeing them turn off the machines, and just like what the nurse said, her heart will stop once they turn off the life support.
They watched Sunghoon run back near Y/n to hug her, wailing. “No please, no”
Sunghoon sat in front of Y/n’s grave, putting down another bouquet of tulips he ordered. He talked to her again. He’s telling her how he wants to wake up from this nightmare. It’s raining, it’s like the cloud is crying with him.
“I’m sorry,” Sunghoon sobbed.
“Sunghoon, let’s go home,” Jake said from behind him.
“Jake, I can’t live without her,” Sunghoon whispered. “I can’t,” he whispered. “Everynight I asked myself what would’ve happened if I told her I like her instead of telling her I like her sister.” He said. “I want her beside me, cause life seems right whenever she’s in it.” he added.
Jake watched as Sunghoon cried, putting an umbrella above them.
Sunghoon sat on his bed, staring at the frame on his side desk. It's the last picture they took together at the garden. He remembered her blushing when an old lady told them they look good together. Opening his phone, he stared at the messages he had sent her, asking her to come back and how much he misses her. Then he opened his gallery, his tears cascaded on his cheeks, watching the videos of her walking in the garden happily.
Sunghoon laid inside his bathtub filled with water. “I’ll be with you soon Y/n.” He spoked, cutting both his wrists with a cutter as he submerged himself in the bathtub.
The end.
Two nerds in a pod
Tumblr media
Ross Geller x reader (reader is female with she/her pronouns)
warnings: just pure fluff, y/n is a doctor yall aka paleontologist, but that’s it 🥳 friends masterlist
Summary: The one where Ross met someone just like him and fell in love
posted: May 10, 2024
Tumblr media
“And that’s why the Salin theory is pure bullshit!” Ross was going on and on about some paleontology theory. You overheard and walked over to the couch in the coffee shop. “Hi sorry I couldn’t help but over hear but are you a paleontologist by any chance?”
“Yes, yes I am.” You immediately got happy and squealed and his two friends jumped. “I am too!”
“Oh my god?! You are?!” You nodded. “Yes I love dinosaurs.”
“Oh my god there’s two of them.” His friend said you didn’t say anything cause you can tell he was joking. “Sorry for him that’s Chandler.”
“I’m Y/n. But ima go but here’s my number you should call me sometime and we can talk about how the Salin theory is indeed not bullshit.” You left your money at the coffee table and left. Ross had a dreamy look on his face.
“Wow! I never met another paleontologist?!” Ross said while looking at the card. They all just looked at him. “She’s just like you Ross.”
“I know!”
______
Ross never called. But that didn’t matter because you called him.
“Um hello.” He tried to sound cool. You laughed. “Hey mystery man. You know I never got your name.”
“Oh it’s Ross, Dr.Geller.”
“Oh we’re being formal? Well I’m Dr. L/n”
You guys got to talking and you kept trying to hint that you wanted to go on a date but he just wouldn’t get it.
“So what’s your dream date Ross?”
“Um probably something with astrology.”
“Oh my god! Ross I’m asking you on a date wanna go?” You took his silence as a yes. “Ok pick me up at 7:30.”
Oh he’s in for it.
______
You guys went on exactly ten dates. You were finally going to meet his friends and sister. You were nervous but excited. He just walked in and everything looked at you. That made you even more nervous.
“Everyone this is Y/n. Y/n this is Joey, Chandler, Phoebe, Rachel, and Monica.”
“Hi Y//n.” They all said. You just waved then the questions started. “So what do you do?” The blonde one with the unique style said.
“Oh I am a paleontologist.” They all groaned and you instantly felt insecure.
“Hey! Hey! Don’t be rude.” Ross said and they all fixed their attitude. He turned to you. “They’re just scared they’re going to hear about dinosaurs.”
“Oh I try not to bore people with my job.” They all smiled and went to hug you.
“We love Y/n!”
______
You guys were all at the coffee shop just talking. Then you found out something that you didn’t know about Ross.
“You were married three times?!” He looked at Joey who brought it up.
“Thank you Joe.”
“You only told me about the lesbian.” You turned to Ross in amusement. “What’s the story with the other two?” At the mention of the other two divorces everyone just walked away but stayed close. He grabbed your hands. “Well the second time I kinda said the wrong name.”
“Whose name did you say?”
“Yea Ross whose name did you say?” Phoebe added.
“Um well it was Rachel’s and before you say anything that was when I was in love with her.” You just nodded.
“And the third time?”
“Married Rachel is Vegas.”
“Wait after you said her name at the last wedding?!” Is he still in love her? Are you just a rebound? All the thoughts running through your mind. I mean you can be that girlfriend that completely takes him away for his friends.
“Well are you still in love with Rachel?”
“No no no. I don’t think about her anymore. Like ew Rachel.” He chuckled nervously.
“I’m right here Ross.” Rachel said.
“Rachel not the time!” Ross exclaimed. You are a little suspicious. I mean who wouldn’t be?!
“I promise Y/n. I am not in love with Rachel.” You just nodded.
Let’s hope this wasn’t a mistake.
______
“Come in!” I walked into Ross’s apartment. “Hey babe.” You gave him a peck on the lips. You came over so he can show you his fossil collection. You already showed yours and he swears he has a batter collection.
“These are 58 fossils ok?”
“Yeah Ross I can count.” He just shushed me dramatically and you giggled. You really like how funny he is especially when he doesn’t try. He began to show all them off and explain as if you guys aren’t in the same career path. But you let him geek out anyway. You got a little turned on by how excited he was and one thing led to another.
He should talk about fossils more often.
_____
You and Ross were at the coffee house with all his friends and you guys were talking about the Salin Theory. He said it doesn’t make sense and you say that it was a groundbreaking discovery. Obviously his friends were not fond of this conversation.
Chandler groaned. “I cant take it anymore!” You both just look at him. “Leave them alone Chandler I think it’s cute.” Phoebe said.
“Thanks Phoebe.” You and Ross said.
“Yea they’re like two nerds in a pod.” At this you both made a face and left. Now that you think about they’re really not all that different.
And you love that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you were awakened in the middle of the night by jean and diluc bursting through your door with kaeya’s limp body between them, his arms draped over each of their shoulders.
“i thought i said to leave him at the tavern if he gets too drunk to walk home?” you fussed, your voice still heavy with sleep as you lit the nearest oil lamp. when the flame illuminated the room in a warm glow, all the color drained from your face. jean managed to steady kaeya’s lithe form as diluc cleared your dining table with one sweep of his arm. you watched in horror, eyes brimming with hot tears as the two carefully laid your husband down on the wooden surface, unconscious, his blood pooling around him. "oh gods! what happened?"
"we were ambushed by no less than a dozen fatui agents on our way to cecilia garden tonight," diluc started. "the three of us hardly stood a chance, but just as jean made the call to retreat, kaeya..." the male's voice faltered, but he pressed on. "he was nearly run through by a pyro agent's blade."
"diluc went back in swinging, giving me just enough of an opening to drag kaeya out, and..." jean went on, but her voice became more and more distant, muffled by the thick fog of panic shrouding your mind when faced with your husband’s immediate mortality.
you were frozen in fear - cold anchors steeling your feet to the floor at the prospect of losing the most important person in your life. he was dying in front of your very eyes. this must be a nightmare, you thought, but diluc’s shouting pierced your awareness, bringing the reality of the situation sharply into focus.
“Y/N!” diluc’s typical calm, collected demeanor was falling apart at the seams, making the dire urgency in his voice all the more unnerving. all the bad blood between him and his sworn brother was water under the bridge at the moment.
jean’s heart pounded in her throat. the metallic scent of her comrade’s blood made her queasy, but she fought to keep it together. you were in shock, and diluc was starting to lose his composure. if she didn’t keep her wits about her, her cavalry captain didn’t stand a chance. she cared too deeply about all three of you to let kaeya die.
“come on, y/n, you can heal him! you can do this, but you must focus.” her voice was shaky, but determined.
you drew a turbulent breath, wiping your tears away as jean continued to encourage you.
“that’s it, y/n. deep breaths.” she spoke in a matter-of-fact tone that helped calm and center you.
her voice was having the same effect on diluc, who used his pocket knife to cut kaeya’s shirt open, exposing his wound so you could get to work.
“my hands…they’re trembling. how can i- ?” you worried.
“mind over matter.” jean took your hands in hers. “look at me, y/n. kaeya needs you right now; his life is literally in your hands. i know it’s not easy, but you have to be rational right now. you can fall apart after you’ve saved your husband’s life.” she squeezed your shoulder. “you’ve got this, okay?”
you nodded, pulling your hands away and shaking them out. you closed your eyes and took a few more deep breaths, galvanizing your nerves and resolve with fierce love. he needs you. and you need him. with your game face on, you opened your eyes again. you tied your hair back and washed your hands as you put diluc in charge of bringing more lamps into the room and lighting them. he gave a stern nod and set about his task as you told jean where you kept your first aid kit.
diluc returned with a couple more lamps, strategically placing them so as to provide you with as much light as possible without running the risk of getting knocked over. he watched as you leaned in to get a better look at kaeya’s wound. you checked his vitals and his color. he’d lost so much blood that his lips and nailbeds were turning a dangerous shade of blue. your husband was unrecognizably pale and his pulse was weak.
“what else can i do, y/n?” the redhead asked, eager and restless to help in any way he could.
“help me get his shirt off,” you ordered.
he lifted kaeya’s top half, and as you worked his sleeve off of one shoulder, jean returned with your kit and jumped in to help with the other side. with kaeya's upper body free from his garments, diluc carefully lowered him back down as jean busied herself with fetching water and clean rags and towels.
you were in rare form as you went through the motions. you were amazed, if not a little disconcerted, at the fact that you’d been able to set your feelings aside, at least temporarily, with less effort than you’d ever imagined you thought possible when it came to your lover. it was through sheer force of your own will that he’d gone from kaeya, my husband to kaeya, my patient.
jean had been right - mind over matter.
fortunately, the blade that had cut him narrowly missed his vital organs so you didn’t have to suture anything internally. you were also grateful for the fact that kaeya was unconscious; otherwise he’d be in a lot of pain while you worked the needle in and out of his skin, which would make the act of stitching him up even more difficult for both of you. you’d sewn him up countless times before, but you’d never tended a wound this deep or life-threatening, let alone on your husband’s body.
also, had he been conscious, you would’ve had to listen to him complain about his denied request for alcohol. normally, you’d oblige him after a brief debate...
‘please, darling?’
‘no, kaeya, it’ll make you bleed more.’
‘but it’ll make it hurt less. are you quite prepared to live with the guilt of inflicting such pain onto your injured husband?’
‘i thought you were into that sort of thing…’ you’d tease with raised eyebrows and a smirk.
‘i am, but alcohol usually helps with that, too,’ he’d muse with a wink.
...although the tears threatened to fill your vision again, the memories made you smile to yourself as you finished the final stitch.
diluc helped jean take the wet rags and pot of blood-tinged water away to be washed as you gingerly placed your ear against kaeya’s chest to check his breathing and heart rate. his pulse was stronger than before, for which you thanked the archons. you moved to brush his cerulean hair away from his face, smiling at his peaceful, handsome features as you noted that his color was returning. just then, his eyelid fluttered. he was too weak to open his eyes yet, but you heard the raspy groan in his throat.
you leaned down to kiss his damp forehead and whispered, i’m here, baby. you’re going to be okay, so please rest.” you took his sinewy, blood-stained hand in yours, holding it close to his heart. “i love you so much, kaeya.” he responded with a squeeze of his fingers, his grip weak but you knew he was telling you he loves you as well.
Tumblr media
a week has passed since diluc and jean dragged your husband's near-lifeless body home. you’re beyond thankful for the healing properties that your vision provides; without it, you’re fairly certain you would’ve become a widow that night.
kaeya has been waking up more often and staying awake longer each time. he hates being bedridden, but you insist that he wait just a couple more days while you monitor him and his wound for any signs of infection.
Tumblr media
more time passes and kaeya has gotten a lot of his strength back, but you still limit his activity to moving from room-to-room and taking short walks around your shared cottage when the weather permits. he enjoyed being waited on hand and foot at first, but now he’s getting restless. he complains and bemoans his boredom, scoffing when you playfully tease him about being a terrible patient.
you’re giving him a sponge bath one afternoon, happily engaged in witty banter and giggling at his shameless flirting.
“you’re a particularly stunning nurse, miss…”
“thank you,” you laugh, playing along as you finish washing his back. gathering his long, blue hair for him so he won’t lie on it as he eases himself back down, you say, “and it’s mrs. alberich.”
“oh, so you’re married. tell me, does your husband treat you well and take good care of you?”
“indeed he does. very much so. i’m the happiest i’ve ever been in my life because of him.” you glance at him with a smile. "he's my knight in dazzling armor."
the pride in your eyes makes his heart swell. “shame. I was going to ask you out on a date…perhaps take you to good hunter for a romantic, candlelit dinner when i get better.”
“what’s stopping you?”
“why, your dear husband, of course.”
“something tells me he wouldn’t mind,” you smile at him with a wink.
"mrs. alberich..." kaeya murmurs. when your eyes meet his, he brings his hand to your face, his palm nuzzling your cheek as his long, cool fingers thread themselves in your hair. “kiss me, my love.”
and you do, relishing the moment, comforted by the taste of his tongue as it pushes against yours, knowing how close this moment came to never existing and not taking a single one of his quickened heartbeats for granted.
he’s needy. sex is a love language for kaeya and it’s been weeks since he’s been between your legs. you protest and push off the bed, afraid of putting weight on his torso when he tries to pull you on top of him.
“kaeya, your stitches!” you chastise.
he bites his bottom lip and grinds his hips against you. “mmm but baby, it’s been so long,” he complains.
“it hasn’t been that long. Maybe a little over a week-”
“two weeks and three days…” he informs you. “...might as well be an eternity for us.”
you think for a moment. it’s true you and kaeya hadn’t gone more than two weeks without making love since you started dating a few years ago. the fact that you still had a very…sexful…marriage after all this time was something you both prided yourselves on. you look down to find kaeya’s heterochromatic eyes pleading with you as he needily ruts his hardening bulge against you.
“please, baby…”
you can count on one hand the number of times your husband has pleaded for your touch, or anything for that matter. begging is something that is typically beneath him. grasping the level of desperation he must be feeling, you cave and let your hand travel the length of his lean thigh.
“i suppose a handjob wouldn’t hurt…” you purr.
“oh fuck~” kaeya’s head falls back to the pillow as a sigh of relief falls from his lips. “my dear wife, you’re the best nurse a guy could ever hope for…” he breathes.
you chuckle softly as your hand slides under the sheet to touch his naked skin. “you’re lucky i married you,” you tease.
with a big, dumb smile on his face he nods. “indeed i am.”
a low groan rumbles in his chest when you squeeze his sensitive flesh, slowly massaging your way up until you can feel his rock hard shaft bounce against your hand.
minutes later, you’re stroking him with one hand while gently tugging on his tightening balls with the other. he’s practically whimpering, trying to lift his hips off the bed to fuck your hand, but you tut at him.
“nah-ah-ahh…you’re exerting yourself too much. be a good boy and maybe i’ll suck you off.”
“you’re an insufferable tease,” he pants. “just wait until i’m healed enough to properly fuck you again. you’re gonna be sorry, love.”
“mmhm…i’m quite looking forward to it, darling,” you say, wiping the smarmy grin off his face when you bend down and swirl your tongue around the moist head of his cock.
wrapping your lips around his girth, you sink down until his blunt tip presses against the back of your throat. you can hear the rustle of the sheets twisting in kaeya's fists as you hold him there until you gag and pull off, the wet sound of your saliva sliding over the head of his cock filling the room as you jerk him off.
“fuck, babe, i’m so close. please…” he whines.
knowing exactly what he wants, you take him into your hot mouth again, this time bobbing and sucking with hollowed cheeks, prepared to drink his impending orgasm from his needy cock. the mere thought of kaeya's seed splashing against the back of your throat makes you clench your thighs and moan around his length. and with that, a string of curses leaves his filthy mouth as his cock twitches, releasing ribbon after ribbon of hot cum against your tongue. there’s so much more than usual, you can’t swallow it all in time and it begins to leak from the corners of your lips, kaeya's milky white fluid contrasting beautifully as it oozes down his dark-skinned shaft.
you lift your face to his, his pouty lips trembling against yours as he tastes himself there. smiling into the kiss, you murmur, "i am very much looking forward to that dinner date, mr. alberich."
"as you should..." he hums.
When people say you’ll know when you’ve met The One, they’re lying. They’re lying straight through their teeth because they don’t know what else to tell you. Maybe they feel sorry for you. Maybe that’s what they were told when they were growing up. Whatever the reason may be, you knew it wasn’t true.
How could it be true?
You thought your boyfriend was The One when you first started dating. He did everything right. He held open doors for you. He walked on the side of the sidewalk closest to the street. He held your hand so you wouldn’t get lost in crowds. He learned what your favorite dishes were and brought them to you whenever you were stressed and needed comfort. He bought you flowers every time you went on a date, and sometimes even just because he felt like it. He was the perfect boyfriend.
Until he wasn’t.
You’d been together for three years now, and this past year had been a living hell. You’re not sure what went wrong, but eventually all those doting behaviors came to an end. He stopped opening doors for you. He stopped walking on the side of the sidewalk closest to the street. He stopped holding your hand so you wouldn’t get lost in the crowd. He stopped caring about your favorite dishes or when you needed comfort. He stopped buying you flowers because you stopped going on dates. He was no longer the perfect boyfriend.
You used to think he was The One because you’d been told that you would just know when you met him. And how could you not think he was The One after he did the textbook boyfriend things? But now you weren’t so sure. After all, if he was truly The One, he wouldn’t be treating you like you were a second option.
All of his attention seemed to be on work and going out with friends every weekend. It felt like he couldn’t give two shits about you, or if you stayed up to wait for him when he didn’t call. And perhaps it was your own fault. You let things get to this point and never spoke up. You bit your tongue when he mentioned he’d be working late, even if you knew there was no way his work required so much overtime.
The only reason you still stuck around was because you were complacent. You were scared of change. Despite everything about your relationship having changed since the beginning, it was still your relationship and leaving it would be a greater change. You couldn’t help that you were a creature of habit.
It was kind of funny though, considering the fact that your best friend was going through the same exact thing.
Jacob and his girlfriend got together similarly around the time as you and your boyfriend. She was sweet when you first met her, everything Jacob wanted in a partner. He would occasionally boast to you about how caring and compassionate she was. He even swore he would marry her one day. He was also the textbook definition of a boyfriend, but he never stopped his actions. And yet somehow, she too switched up.
She became controlling and possessive, like any girl who breathed the same air as Jacob was trying to steal him away from her. She read his text messages, she knew his passwords, she knew his work and school schedule. She even knew nearly as much about you as he did.
You found this out after the two of you went out for lunch one day. He was so frustrated over the situation, but couldn’t escape just like you. He was also afraid of the disruption to his life. Because she was pretty much stalking his phone activity, you planned a weekly hangout where you’d complain to each other about your respective relationships.
Tonight was one of those hangouts.
You’d met up at a cute little family owned Italian restaurant for dinner, both of you worn out from your deteriorating relationships. But the sight of one another was almost enough to ease the weight on your shoulders, to fix every problem single-handedly.
The lighting inside the restaurant is dim, every table adorned with candles and slim vases with a daisy. You hadn’t been here in years, the last time being when you and your boyfriend first started dating. It used to be one of your favorite spots to visit with Jacob, but you stopped coming together once you’d gotten into your own relationships. Being here with your boyfriend felt… off. So you never came back.
Sitting across the table from Jacob had your heart fluttering in your chest, a weird sensation you’d long forgotten. Despite the reoccurring thought about how attractive he looked tonight, you couldn’t help but notice how dejected he looks. He hadn’t said much, which was completely out of the ordinary. He always had something to say, always had a little quip prepared.
He pushes around the pasta on his plate, lips pursed as he does so. You let out a sigh, taking a sip of your wine and setting your fork down with a clack against the ceramic plate. “Are you okay?”
“Hmm?” He glances up from his food, like he’d been checked out this whole time. “Oh, yeah. I’m fine.”
“No you’re not, Cobie. You’ve been quiet since we got here and you’ve hardly eaten,” you say pointedly, crossing your arms over your chest. “Now, what’s up? Don’t forget that I know you like the back of my hand.”
He lets out a small chuckle, leaning back in his seat. (You ignore the way the action has that previous fluttering travel down into your stomach.) “Well, I didn’t really know how to bring this up, so I guess I was kinda in my head about that,” he turns his head away from you momentarily, wetting his lips before looking back at you. “I broke up with Kyunmi last night.”
You know your eyes are comically wide upon hearing this revelation, especially when Jacob has to bite his lip to prevent laughter. You definitely weren’t expecting him to say *that*. He’d shared with you numerous times that he didn’t think he could break up with her, too afraid to risk her having a meltdown over it. You could only wonder what made him change his mind.
“I’m glad you’re… out of that situation now?” You form it more as a question, not sure if he considered this a good thing or not.
“Thanks, N/N. I appreciate that,” he appears lighter now that he’s gotten it off his chest, indulging himself in his pasta finally. “It was a difficult decision to make, but it’s for the better. I felt suffocated, you know?”
All you can do is nod, too familiar with that feeling yourself. Jacob Bae was a brave man for being able to find his way out of such a toxic relationship. You wished one day, you could gather the courage to do the same.
As the thought resonates with you, your phone rings, as if reading your mind. Your eyebrows furrow at the caller ID, confused why he’d be calling you right now. You mutter an apology to Jacob, excusing yourself from the table to talk outside. With a roll of your eyes, you answer the call.
“Hello?”
“Where the fuck are you?”
His harsh tone and loud voice directly in your ear has you flinching instinctively, wincing at how pissed off he sounds. “I’m— um— out.”
“Obviously I fucking know that. I’m asking where. Why aren’t you home?” Okay, maybe you were just adding fuel to the fire.
“I’m having dinner with a friend,” you frown, kicking a pebble near your foot. “Why do you care?”
“Because I’m home and I wanted to have dinner with my fucking girlfriend. Is that too much to ask for now?” His voice just keeps rising in volume. “Are you with that guy you’re friends with? Jacob, is it? Can’t keep your goddamn legs closed for once?”
You feel like crying. You’re humiliated. How could he think so lowly of you? After all the nights you’ve spent staying awake until early hours of the morning, waiting for him to come home just to smell another girl’s perfume all over his collar. And he had the audacity to slut shame you? You feel the bile threatening to push from the back of your throat.
“Fuck you,” you bark, wiping your runny nose with the heel of your palm. “I’ve never once cheated on you, you fucking prick.”
“Likely story,” he scoffs. “You better get your ass home before you make me angry, Y/N.”
“Don’t talk to me that way. I’m not your property. And I’m sick and tired of being at your beck and call.” You think Jacob‘s newfound freedom rubbed off on you, encouraging you to speak your mind. You couldn’t keep holding in all the qualms you held with him. You couldn’t keep quiet anymore.
You can hear him gasp slightly, as if he’s appalled by your sudden ability to speak up for yourself. But before he can get anything else out, you hang up and set your phone to Do Not Disturb, tossing it haphazardly into your purse.
Your hands are shaking and you feel the dampness on your cheeks. You didn’t deserve to put up with this anymore, you deserved better. You wanted better. Being complacent was no longer sufficient for you. You attempt to make yourself look a bit more presentable, going back into the restaurant where you’re met with a concerned Jacob.
His brows are knitted together, forming an adorable crease in the center of his forehead. You almost reach across the table to smooth it out. The expression doesn’t go away, in fact it stays put as you down the rest of the wine in your glass.
“What happened?”
The server comes back and refills your drink, which was probably not a very good idea, but you digress. You shake your head, nearly finishing what had just been poured for you. The influx of alcohol in your system makes your head feel a little fuzzy, but it feels so much better than the dull ache from earlier.
“Eunho and I just had a fight. I’m so done, Jacob. I can't do this anymore.” You run a hand through your hair, resting your elbows on the table and cradling your head in your hands.
His lips curl downward. He pulls out a few bills from his wallet, tucking them under his plate before he stands, outstretching his hand to you. “C’mon, let’s go.”
You’re puzzled by his actions, but don’t question him, lacing your fingers together and following him to his car. He plays music from your favorite artists and drives to nowhere in particular, doing his best to get the situation off your mind. You nearly burst into tears again, because only Jacob could be this kind to you. Only Jacob could take care of you this well.
Only Jacob would have a playlist of all your favorite music prepared on his phone specifically for the times you rode in his car. Only Jacob would tell you he’d just broken up with his girlfriend and comfort you rather than seek comfort for himself. Only Jacob could know exactly what you wanted and needed, more than you knew yourself.
And you feel stupid. Stupid for not seeing it sooner, for not realizing sooner. For not realizing that it should’ve been Jacob all along. That it should’ve been Jacob who you’d given the key for your heart to. It should’ve been Jacob who laid in bed next to your every night, arms wrapped around your waist and breathing into the crook of your neck as you slept.
Because he’s always been this way. He’s always put you first, doted on your every need. Before either of you got into relationships, when it was just the two of you, he treated you as his number one. He did everything right. He held open doors for you. He walked on the side of the sidewalk closest to the street. He held your hand so you wouldn’t get lost in crowds. He learned what your favorite dishes were and brought them to you whenever you were stressed and needed comfort. He bought you flowers every time you hung out and sometimes even just because he felt like it.
Then you had to go and get a fucking boyfriend. And look where that got you.
“Hey, hey,” Jacob’s voice cuts through your inner monologue, causing you to blink and snap back into reality. “Why are you crying, sweetheart?”
Just great. You didn’t even know you were fucking crying. Or that Jacob pulled the car over. You were parked in the furthest, emptiest corner of a parking lot, the closest light post meters away.
“I… don’t know,” you answer, because truthfully, you don’t. “I just feel like an idiot.”
“You’re not an idiot, Y/N. You’re one of the smartest people I’ve ever known. How could you ever think that about yourself?” He leans over the center console to swipe away some of your tears with his thumb.
“It should’ve been you all along, Cobie. I should’ve picked you.” You blurt, again, because you’re an idiot. You never know when to open your mouth and apparently you never know when to shut it either.
It’s silent for a few moments. You can hear your heart in your ears, pounding along with your pulse. You might’ve just royally screwed up your friendship too. But then you hear Jacob’s seat belt unbuckling and his upper half is folded over the center console completely, his lips finding yours.
It’s a sweet kiss, desperate in a way that you’ve never known Jacob to be, but you aren’t complaining. You free yourself from your own seat belt, hand coming up to cup the side of his face. Of all outcomes you could’ve predicted for tonight, this was nowhere near that list. Your mouths move together in perfect synchrony, like they were meant to do this. It was as if you and Jacob had kissed a hundred times in the past and you were moving on pure instinct.
When you part to gasp for air, he grasps your hips roughly, pulling you into his lap. Part of you is surprised you didn’t honk the horn with your ass, too preoccupied placing your lips on his again as he slides the seat all the way back. He bites and sucks on your bottom lip, tongue tangling with yours so messily you can feel the drool slipping down the side of your chin.
He grinds into you, fingers digging into your waist and bunching up your sundress. He trails his lips to your ear, nibbling the lobe as he whispers, “I could treat you so much better, baby. Let me treat you better.”
You can’t halt the whine that pushes past your throat, knee hiking up slightly to feel how hard he is, pressed into the heat of your cunt only covered by the thin material of your panties. You wanted that so badly. You wanted Jacob to treat you like his pretty little princess, to spoil you and shower you with his love and affection.
“Your dress got a little dirty, how about we take it off?” He suggests, though the sight of you in the flowy piece of cloth is enough to have him orgasming on the spot. Instead of removing it completely, you help him pull the straps off your shoulders, exposing your bare chest. His thumb circles your sensitive nipples, tweaking them until you’re shivering and squirming above him.
“Need you so bad, Cobie,” you whimper in the space between his collarbone and his neck. “Want you in me already, I can’t wait.”
“So impatient,” he chuckles, the sound rumbling underneath you as you claw at his pants to free him from its confines. “You want me to fuck you? Want me to mark you up as mine so you know just how much better I am? I’ll ruin you for anyone else, baby. You won’t want anyone but me after this.”
“Is that a threat or a promise?” You raise an eyebrow, hovering your mouth over his and evening your voice as best you can. Jacob pokes his cheek with his tongue, his grip on your waist tightening. You groan at how attractive it is, rolling your hips experimentally in hopes it spurs him to get on with it.
“You’re so fucking lucky I want you just as much, sweetheart,” he speaks against your lips, aiding you in your nth attempt to push down his pants. “But just so you know, I’m not holding myself back.”
“Wouldn’t dream of anything else.” You reach down to pull your underwear to the side.
Jacob doesn’t even let you admire his cock before he’s thrusting up into you, lost in the pleasure as soon as it’s begun. You moan loudly, the noise reverberating around the car while he sheaths himself completely, your pelvises kissing like your mouths. He momentarily allows you to adjust to him, and then he’s driving in and out of your pussy as if it was a knife and butter.
Your cunt is so warm and wet, sucking him in so deliciously it clouds his judgment. His hold on your waist is bruising and he pounds into you unforgivingly, like he’s been waiting for this for years upon years. “Fuck, you feel so good around me.”
“Mmmmm,” you gasp when one of his hands tugs at your hair, baring your neck and chest to him. “Jacob, you’re so— God— you’re so deep.”
He starts to leave marks along the skin that shows, ensuring he stakes his claim in case your fuckass ex(?) tries to get you back. Jacob was far from insecure, he knew from the moment you followed him to his car that you’d choose him. But he wanted you to know he was serious, and if acting like your body was a canvas he was painting and copyrighting was the only way to prove that, then so be it.
“Yeah?” he separates himself from your jugular with a pop, rubbing his nose against your own. “You close yet?”
“Mhm,” you whimper, nails dragging under his shirt and scratching up his abdomen. “Need you to fuck me harder.”
“Your wish is my command,” his hands come under your thighs, bending his knees so he can plunge into you faster and deeper, the tip of his cock consistently nudging that sensitive spot inside of you.
He punctuates each thrust with a kiss to your lips, swallowing your pretty sounds. You feel the band in your stomach grow thinner and thinner, before it eventually just snaps. Your release coats Jacob’s dick, making it easier for him to slide in and out as he inches towards his own orgasm. You don’t have the energy to move, your body spasming with overstimulation.
Jacob’s middle finger circles your clit, causing your walls to clench around him and finally trigger his ejaculation, the sensation provoking another one out of you. You wail as you cream on his cock, feeling your sticky cum trickling down your thighs. He slowly continues his thrusts until he’s brought you back down from your high, both of you wincing when he pulls out fully.
You both notice how fogged up the windows of his car are, eyes meeting instantaneously and the two of you bursting out into laughter, still half naked. He brushes your hair out of your face with a dreamy sigh. “I meant what I said, by the way.”
“Hmm?” Your mouth forms a confused pout.
“About treating you better,” he clarifies. “You deserve the world, my Y/N. I wanna be the one to give it to you.”
You sniffle, full on ugly crying when the weight of his words sink in. Jacob was all you ever needed and more. How could you say no?
“You already have.” You say, no louder than a whisper, as if someone else could hear your confessions. He brings you closer to him, resting his chin on top of your head.
“Good,” he kisses your forehead. “‘Cause I don’t plan on letting go.”
♡ Previous Chapter | Next Chapter | Masterlist
♡ In which, after a couple of years of listening to Peyton and Parker Bradshaw complain about their parents’ custody agreement, Grandpa Mav’s meddling goes a little bit too far.
♡ warnings: mentions of divorce throughout the fic, flashbacks to arguments and unhappily married people. Idiots who still love each other and don’t know it, struggles during breastfeeding, Jake Seresin cameo, flashback indicated by italics
“She’s seeing someone? — You’re kidding!”
Penny looks up from the bar, eyebrows scrunching slightly as she stares across the otherwise empty room at her husband and his two adopted grandchildren. Sitting opposite the two young girls in a booth, the three of them turn their heads and realize that they’re been overheard, then quietly resume their gossiping.
Maverick has this idea in his head that Rooster isn’t happy being alone. He probably isn’t, most people aren’t — but Penny has told him time and time again not to meddle. Rooster’s kind of a hot head about his personal life and this can only end badly.
Anyone that has come across Pete Mitchell, though, will be able to tell you that trying to get a bad idea out of his head is like drawing blood from a stone. There’s no level of intervention that can stop whatever he’s up to. Besides, it is a little bit cute watching the three of them plotting away together.
The door startles Penny as she’s cleaning residue from the beer taps. It’s only eight in the morning, they aren’t open yet and that door is supposed to be locked. Mav left it open. Jake Seresin strolls in the same way he always does, sunglasses on, lips quirked. Like he owns the place.
“Penny.” He greets with a nod.
“Little bit early for me to be seeing you, isn’t it?” She replies with a soft smile, setting her cloth down and leaning her palms forwards on her side of the bar. Jake takes off his sunglasses and tucks them into the front pocket of his khakis.
“My blushing bride seems to think she left something here last night.” Jake answers without a hint of shame, lips quirked at the sides, knowing Penny knows exactly what he’s talking about.
“Ah. Yeah, I was wondering if she would be wanting it back.” Penny answers, her cheeks running hot even though she has nothing to be embarrassed about. Jake’s wedding is to a local girl that Penny has known for years, Quinn even worked her for a couple of summers while she was in college. Last night, Quinn’s bachelorette party began here.
Penny crouches down and slides the lost and found box out from under the counter. She presents Jake with a plastic bag. His brows scrunch slightly. Quinn only sent him here for a phone. Glancing between Penny and this mysterious plastic bag, he opens it gingerly. She watches as his grin grows slightly.
Sure, there’s his fiancées phone. But there’s also a cute little gimmicky thong that was a gift from one of her friends that proudly proclaims ‘Property of Captain Jake Seresin’ on it. There are a few other things too, but it’s the thong that really catches Jake’s eye. He chuckles and closes the bag again.
“Thanks for saving these for me, angel. I’ll make sure that they get back to Quinn safely.” He winks one of his green eyes at her and pats a hand over the top of the bag.
Penny breathes out a dry chuckle, shaking her head. In her almost fifteen years of knowing Jake, he hasn’t changed a bit. “I’m sure you will.”
The sound of hushed whispering draws Jake’s attention away from their conversation, his head turning towards the booth in the corner. He leaves the bag on the bar, wandering over, “Bradshaw’s!”
They turn their heads in unison, two freckled faces staring up at the man who taught them exactly how fun water balloons can be, smiles crossing their faces. “Hey, Jake.”
“What are you two troublemakers doing here? — Shouldn’t you be in school?” He checks the heavy, black IWC watch on his wrist and frowns slightly at the two of them.
“We got suspended.” Parker answers calmly, still undecided in whether or not she should feel guilty about the situation. It’s hard to feel guilty when she gets to spend an entire week hanging out with Grandpa Mav instead of learning fractions.
“No way,” Jake smiles at the idea, leaning forwards and resting his palms on the table on the booth. He has always said that the two of them take after their mother and this just proves it. You always had a knack for finding mischief. “What’d you do?”
“We swapped places so that I could beat someone up for her.” Peyton explains. Jake grins. He and Rooster might have had their differences, but Jake has always adored these little terrors. He turns his head towards Mav, raising his eyebrows and then looking back to the girls.
“You look like you’re up to no good right now.” Jake decides, folding his arms over his broad chest. The twins glance at Maverick and Jake knows that he’s right. He slips a hand into his pocket and pulls out his wallet, opening it up. He drops two five dollar bills in front of each of the girls, “Well, do me a favour and give your old man a little hell.”
“Thanks, Jake.” Parker grins up at him. Like butter wouldn’t melt with her little pigtails and their matching denim overalls. Jake smiles and gives them a curt nod as he steps back.
Jake chuckles to himself as he waves goodbye to Penny and takes his fiancée’s belongings back to his car.
“What did Bradley say when she told him?” Maverick presses.
“He was fine with it!” Peyton bangs her fists on the table, startling her sister and getting a sharp look from Penny. She sighs and folds her arms over her chest. “He’s going to meet this weirdo tomorrow!”
Maverick hums, resting his hand over his face. Admittedly, he hadn’t been expecting a third party and this derails some of the plans he had made with the kids. But, it doesn’t kill the plan completely.
He sits forwards and rests his hands on the table as they lean in closer to hear him. “Okay, so here’s what you do, and this is important, so listen.”
The next afternoon, Bradley finds himself more anxious than usual for the evening. It’s a big deal. Meeting someone who could be a big part of his childrens’ lives. Bradley glances around his room at the two of them, wondering for a moment what they would think if they knew.
Only, they do know, and they’re two steps ahead of him already.
“How come you’re watching me get ready? — You two never care what I wear.” Rooster squints at them through the mirror as he tries to tame his short curls with a small amount of styling wax. Parker picks up the pot and inspects it. Barber Barber beachcomber sea-salt infused styling paste. She lifts it and inhales. It smells good, at least.
Peyton searches through his closet, looking through shirt after shirt as she tries to find one that’s good enough.
“Are you going on a date?” Parker asks. He glances down at her as he grabs the deodorant from his dresser and sprays it under his arms.
“No, just going out with some friends.” He replies calmly. Telling white lies to your kids is just part of being a parent.
“Which friends?” Peyton prompts.
Rooster gives her a quick look from the corner of his eye and smooths a hand over his mustache, eyeing himself in the mirror. There’s more scrutiny in the way he looks at himself now than there used to be. It isn’t that he has let himself go, it’s just that he’s not as young as he used to be. Stronger now, a little less lean than he was back then.
“We don’t have to tell each other everything, you know.”
“I’m gonna remember that when you’re asking me who I’m going on a date with in a couple of years.” Parker replies.
“Watch it.” Rooster warns, instantly frowning at her. She smiles sweetly back up at him. She looks so much like you when she does that. There’s affection in the way he rolls his eyes and grabs his belt from his dresser. “You found a shirt for me yet, honeybee?”
Peyton hums in consideration and steps up onto the base of the wardrobe, extending onto her tiptoes to pull a hanger down from the rack. She turns and sets it on the bed, “Try this one.”
Rooster scrunches up his nose slightly, eyeing the coal coloured button up that his daughter just laid out in front of him. “Kinda boring, don’t you think?”
“It’s grown up.” She protests, hopping up onto the foot of his bed and staring him down, “Try it.”
It’s probably not the smartest move to take advice on what’s grown up and what isn’t from a seven year old, but Bradley relents. It’s a grey linen short sleeve. He slips it over his shoulders and buttons it up. Peyton frowns at her father’s reflection as Parker shakes her head in disapproval
Something about it isn’t clicking. It hugs him too tightly in the wrong places, it sits weird on his arms. He sighs softly. There’s no way he’s wearing this to see you.
“Guys?” The chirpy voice carries through the condo as the front door swings shut downstairs. Amber. Parker glances across at her sister as Bradley calls back that they’re upstairs.
Amber is the twenty year old college student that lives next door. She trails her manicured fingers along the wall as she strolls along the carpeted hallway, already barefoot by the time that she stops to lean up against Bradley’s doorframe. She’s super friendly and she has been so helpful since she got back from college for the summer. She adores the twins and will babysit whenever Bradley asks.
“Hey, Amber — does this look dumb?” Bradley asks, furrowing his brows as he half turns towards her, still eyeing up the awkward fit of the shirt through the mirror. She smiles, her plump, glossed lips quirking at the edges as she looks him up and down.
“Like that? — Um…” She presses her hand over her mouth like she’s about to laugh. Rooster scoffs and shakes his head as he starts to unbutton the shirt.
“Enough said. Pick something else, my little Honeybee.” He chuckles. Amber’s green eyes trail as his fingers work open the buttons on the shirt, revealing more and more tanned skin. Peyton moves to jump down.
“Wait, wait…” Crossing past Parker, she steps in front of her boss and looks him over once more. “We can fix this. Do you have tank tops?”
Parker moves to sit beside her sister on the bed. Faces stormy and their eyes crossed, they watch as this borderline teenager plays dress up with their daddy.
First she gives him a tank top, and then she recommends that he changes his pants. She fiddles through his jewelry while he changes. He steps out of his en-suite with the grey short sleeve unbuttoned and black dress pants that hug his hips perfectly.
“How do I look?”
Her hands reach out and curl into the unbuttoned sides of the shirt, holding onto the fabric as she looks him over. The smile on her lips is unmistakably sly as she nods her head at him, “Amazing. Right, girls?”
Met with immediate silence and stoney faces, Amber’s confidence wavers. Peyton folds her arms over her chest while Parker squints at her side.
“Alright, well I’ve gotta get going. There’s money in the kitchen for pizza, bed by nine at the latest. I’ll be back before eleven. Have fun, kids!”
Amber winces at herself being included in that. Even wearing her Mom’s perfume and the shortest skirt she owns, he’s still calling her kid. She doesn’t realise that Bradley’s aloofness doesn’t run in the family.
The knowing look in the girls’ eyes as their babysitter checks out of the window and watches their dad drive away. The trouble they’re already planning to ensure that she won’t be invited back.
“Babe?” Slamming the car door shut, Bradley damn near forgets to lock it as he bundles the plastic bag under his arm. He rushes forwards, crossing the browning lawn at the front of the condominium and fumbling for his house key. No time for lack of precision, he slips the key into the lock and twists. Even before the door opens, the screaming fills his ears. Hell, he could hear it before he had even turned the car radio off.
“Baby?” The powder-blue painted door swings open wide, chipping paint from the hallway wall that’ll count as a two hundred dollar reduction in the return of your rental deposit later on. He kicks it shut behind him and carries on through the small apartment, already knowing exactly where you are. There are technically only four rooms to pick from.
The kitchen and living room are all in one space. Small bathroom. Two bedrooms. The screaming tells him exactly which room you’re in. Rounding the corner into the nursery, his heart breaks in two. You’re sitting on the floor with your back to Parker’s crib, your head in your hands. He hadn’t heard you sobbing until right now.
“Baby,” He breathes out, legs carrying him forwards as he moves to sit next to you. Parker’s cradled in against your chest, wailing as loudly as her little lungs will let her. Behind you, Peyton’s screaming just as loud in her crib. “It’s okay, give me the baby.”
Up close, he can finally see the way that you’re trembling. No, not even trembling. Shaking. Your lips, your arms, your legs. Unable to hold still as your body wracks with sobs and your smaller baby flails in your arms. Faintly, you can hear your husband saying your name.
“Give me the baby, it’s okay.” Bradley says softly.
Your lip quivers as you cradle her closer to your chest, silent tears burning your cheeks as they stream freely. Your voice breaks, barely audible over the newborn screeches that fill your small apartment. “I called you over an hour ago.”
“I know, I’m sorry,” His adam’s apple bobs in his throat as he sits forwards, shuffling closer to you. He presses his lips to your temple, “I got here as quick as I could. Let me take her.”
You hold her closer, a silent sob wracking through you, feeling her tiny heart racing against your skin with how worked up she has gotten. Tears stream down your face without a break, living your skin wet and salty. “I can’t — s-she still won’t— I’ve been trying—“
“I know, I know, it’s alright,” He smooths a hand gently over the wispy curls on Parker’s head, fluffy and already thinning from the amount that she had been born with. He kisses your shoulder softly. “I got the formula.”
Parker was born smaller than her sister. It’s natural with twins, there’s almost always a smaller one. But, it’s been three weeks. Peyton latches without issue and her weight has been progressing normally. Three weeks old and yesterday’s doctors appointment confirmed that she’s still underweight.
Your mother managed to breastfeed four kids successfully. Four different pregnancies, four different times in her life — and you can’t manage just the two of them. She has been telling you since you found out that you were pregnant that your body would know what to do, that it would all be okay and it isn’t.
“C’mon, mama. Let’s get her fed,” Bradley hums softly as he reaches out for her. “Just need her to stop crying first. Right? — We’ll figure out what comes next after that.”
He kisses the top of your head as you relax your arms enough for him to take the newborn.
“That’s it. Alright, I’m gonna go and make her a bottle. Can you bring Peyton? — Doc says they should eat on the same schedule.” He pushes himself up with one hand and cradles your daughter with the other.
“I fucking fed Peyton already!”
It’s snappier than you mean for it to be. Your chest heaves after you speak, throat sore already from all of the crying. Bradley nods his head, “Perfect. That’s great — she’s probably just crying because loud mouth here’s keeping her up. She’ll calm down. I’m gonna be right back, baby. Two minutes.”
He scoops up the plastic back on the floor and wanders off towards the kitchen. Over the sound of the other twin screaming, you can hear him faintly shushing your daughter.
“Not even a month old yet,” Bradley hums, pressing his lips to his daughter’s forehead, then her nose. “Already being a little trouble-maker. We’ve got our work cut out with you, huh, kid?”
He sways softly, taking care to support her tiny head, leaning back to keep her balanced against his shoulder as he shifts her into one arm so that he can pour the boiled water. Humming softly, he doesn’t even realize that the crying in the other room has stopped until the bottle is ready and Parker’s screeching is replaced with the contented hums.
“Atta girl,” Rooster murmurs, his infant daughter rested safely along his forearm, leaned back against the kitchen counter and her bottle lifted in his other hand whilst she guzzles the formula back. “Gonna just as big as your sister one day, aren’t you?”
A soft whimper breaks his attention from the baby. He looks up and finds you standing in the doorway to the hall. This isn’t how motherhood looked when you had pictured it.
You, barely able to get one baby off to sleep, standing in yesterday’s pyjamas at four in the afternoon, watching your husband take care of the baby after he has been at work all day. You stare at him, still in his work khakis, making it look so natural.
Standing before him in one of his stretched out old hoodies and a pair of boxers that you bought for yourself in your final trimester. Skin blotchy and your eyes swollen with tears, you turn your face away from him towards the ground.
“Hi, beautiful,” Rooster smiles at you. After most of her two ounce bottle is finished, Parker stops drinking and Bradley sets the bottle down on the counter. His face soft, head tilted, those big brown eyes tugging at your heart strings. “Tough day?”
A sob catches in your throat as you stumble forwards and press yourself into his side. Parker tucked up against his other shoulder as he pats her back gently, he’s quick to wrap his other arm around you. He’s going to have to grow a third with him being outnumbered like this.
“I keep trying and she just won’t — or she can’t — or I’m doing something — a-and my Mom says that—“ Babbling on, dampening the shoulder of his uniform. Bradley simply rests his cheek against your hair and smiles to himself.
“Baby,” It’s enough to make you quiet for a minute. His hand patting Parker’s back softly, the gravel of his voice vibrating through his chest as your head lays against his shoulder. “Your Mom once asked me if the movie Avatar was based on a true story. She gets it wrong sometimes.”
You can’t help but chuckle at the analogy he chose, hugging yourself closer to his side, resting your hand against Parker’s back over the top of his.
“Formula or breastfeeding — whatever stops her from screaming the house down like that is a win in my book. How about yours?” Bradley asks, rubbing his free hand up and down along the base of your spine. You nod softly against his chest. He pulls back and lays Parker down along the length of his forearm again, her head resting against your stomach.
“I just want to do it all right. They’re so perfect, and I just… I want to be perfect for them too, like you are.”
“Me? — Perfect?” Bradley lifts his head and grins at you. He unhooks his arm from around your waist and presses the back of his palm to your forehead. “All these kids are making you loopy, baby.”
You lean down and kiss her forehead softly, then settle back in against Bradley’s side. “I’m so worried about her already. Do you think we ever stop feeling like this?”
Bradley shakes his head softly as he strokes his index finger along her rounded cheek, and over her chin. “Nah. Kids are designed to stress their parents out, it’s like their sole purpose.”
Lips quirking softly at the sides, you glance up at him and know that he’s probably right. Doing it with him made it all seem okay, though. Being stressed out with him at your side didn’t seem so tough.
Now, staring at him across the restaurant, it suddenly occurs to you to wonder when all of that changed. When had doing it alone become a safer option than having him with you? — Those last few months all seem so blurry now.
The memories might be fuzzy but the feelings aren’t. They’re heavy and they’ve sat with you for the past two years. You might not remember exactly why you let him go, but the pain is enough to know that you wouldn’t like to feel that way again.
“Rooster!”
Chris and Bradley’s heads turn at the same time. Bradley nods in acknowledgement as his autopilot directs him to do. Then, he steps past the hostess and points to the two of you. He takes in what’s in front of him as he walks over.
This new guy isn’t ugly, which is more irritating than Bradley was expecting it to be. He looks him up and down. Loose fitting jeans and a flannel shirt buttoned up. Brown hair that really isn’t styled all that differently from Bradley’s. But, thanks to Amber, Bradley is dressed significantly better.
The pants fit him perfectly and the charcoal shirt just makes his skin look even more golden than it usually is. You squint softly and wonder who the fuck dressed him — because the man that you married doesn’t dress like that.
Maybe the man that you divorced does. It’s been a long time since you saw Bradley for something other than drop offs or pick ups.
“Hey.”
“Roo— Bradley,” It seems more grown up, more formal. A more appropriate way to refer to your ex husband. “This is Chris. Chris, this is Bradley.”
“Heard a lot about you.” Chris smiles, cheeks dimpling as he sticks his hand out. You watch as Bradley takes his hand and shakes it casually. Weird — it’s weird.
“You’re still a man of mystery to me,” Bradley admits playfully, shooting you a quick look and noticing that you’re eyeing his outfit. Letting the babysitter pick what he was wearing was a good choice. “Luckily, I’m good at asking questions.”
Small talk, small talk. Your ex-husband and your boyfriend are hitting it off like a house on fire and you’re just standing idly between them, wondering why this doesn’t please you as much as it should.
The nerves that have been bothering you all weekend don’t settle down even when they’re laughing and jibing each other about football teams and golf. You didn’t even know that Bradley played golf.
You’re shown to your table and you accidentally pick the seat between them. Chris sits back in his seat with one hand on your knee and the other curled around his beer as he teases Bradley about a football game from three years ago that their teams played against each other.
As much as he’s enjoying the conversation, Bradley’s eyes keep wandering back to that guy’s hand on your knee. His foot taps impatiently against the floor, fighting to keep his focus on the conversation.
Finally, focus shifts to something a little more engaging for you when Bradley asks you how the two of you met. He sits back on his chair and watches the two of you finish each other’s sentences.
“Well, Chris’ workshop is right down the street from my store, and y’know, I have consultations all the time and weddings are stressful so I like to keep my appointments chill and quiet, but then he was always—“
“Y’know, building something. Hammering, sawing, whatever. And there are a couple of times actually, where she came flying through the door of my shop telling me what’s what and —“
His thumb swipes through the condensation on his beer, staring at you. Your face is turned away from him, looking at Chris with this dopey, lovesick look on your face. Bradley wonders if you’ve told him that you love him yet.
It’s a cute story. The way that you’re beaming across the table at this guy doesn’t make Bradley happy, but he knows that it should. By the time you’re finished eating, he has searched high and low for some kind of major character flaw on this guy and had come up with nothing.
Short, brown hair. Stubble covering his jaw, kind of a squinty cowboy look to contrast the sharp blue of his eyes, not short. Handsome, sure. And he’s great with kids.
Bradley damn near picks up his dessert spoon and turns it into a weapon — either for use on himself or your new boyfriend, he isn’t sure, when he listens to Chris’ stories from his work with inner city kids.
Thankfully, right as they’re getting into the nitty gritty of Chris’ charitable personality, Bradley’s phone cuts through the silence. You grin across the table at Chris, squeezing his large palm in yours and pretending that this doesn’t make you as uncomfortable as it does.
“Whoa — kid, slow down. What?” Bradley plugs a finger into his other ear, brows furrowing as he tries to decipher the incoherent babbling on the other end of the phone.
“I looked everywhere, and I’ve been calling them for like fifteen minutes! I don’t know if they’re hiding or they ran away but I’m freaking out right now, please don’t be mad at me — should I call the cops?”
Rooster pushes his chair out and stands up from the table. “Jesus Christ, no. Don’t call the cops, I’m on my way. Did you check the crawl space in my room?”
“Cops? — Rooster, what the fuck?” You frown at him from across the table. Rooster sighs and presses his finger into his ear drum to understand the shrieking girl on the line.
“There’s a crawl space in your room?”
“Just, hang tight. I’m gonna be ten minutes. Tell them I’m on my way and they’ll probably turn up.” He hangs up and shoves his phone into his pocket, grabbing his wallet and tugging it open. “I’m really sorry, I’ve gotta run. It was great meeting you Chris, you seem really cool, but, uh—“
“Rooster, did you let somebody lose our kids?”
“No! I left them with a very responsible babysitter, actually, and I’m pretty sure that they’re just messing with her.”
“Oh, well that’s good. You’re pretty sure.” You sigh, shaking your head at him as you set your glass down. “I’ll be sure to mention that when I issue the amber alert.”
Chris slips his hand into yours and squeezes softly as Bradley tosses his card down onto the table.
“Whatever. I’ll text you.” He slips his wallet back into his pants and turns, leaving your mouth gaping.
“Are you kidding — our kids might be missing, we’re obviously coming. Right?” You shoot a look across at Chris as it occurs to you that this is probably extremely overwhelming for him. He gives you a calm smile and nods his head at you.
“So, let’s go over that again. You left the office around 11:30, correct?”
Shoupe’s stare is set on Rafe, almost like he’s waiting for your husband to blink at him wrong, anything to show he isn’t telling the truth.
“It was around that time. I don’t remember exactly.”
You can tell Rafe is fighting the urge to tell the police to fuck off, given the heavy annoyance lacing his tone. You worry he might, his impulse control only lasting so long.
Their incessant questions don’t help, going over every detail of the night Rafe last saw Chase alive.
It’s a strong case of déjà vu for you, Shoupe and the same officer as last time, sitting in the exact same spot on your couch. Except, you can feel the gravity of the situation now. A man you know has been killed.
“And nothing struck you as odd about Chase that night? All he said was bye as he was leaving?”
“That’s all I remember. How many times do I have to tell you I barely saw him that night?”
Whatever Rafe was holding back, he isn’t anymore, his anger getting the best of him. It doesn’t sit right with either officer, their meaningful glances toward each other telling you more than they’ll ever say.
As your eyes rake over your husband, you don’t know why he seems nervous, unable to stop the shake in his leg.
You reach your hand out, the denim of his pants rough under your skin as you stop the uneasy movement.
“I think what Rafe is trying to say, is he’s answered all of your questions, more than once,” you placate. “You seem to be wanting an answer he just doesn’t have.”
Rafe watches you, an appreciation shining in his eyes that he wouldn’t know how to voice to you.
“We would love to help any way we can. But he’s told you everything he knows.”
Shoupe mulls over your words, seeming almost annoyed that you’re making a good point.
“Fine,” he concedes, looking over both you and Rafe. “But if there’s anything you could possibly think of, you know where to find us,” he adds, standing up.
 “Of course,” you reply, showing them the way out.
“It’s important to us you find whoever did this,” you say, giving Rafe a pointed look, motioning toward the officers, needing him to show his support.
When he spots this, he nods. “Catch this guy before something else happens. Don’t put our tax dollars to waste.”
He keeps his eyes on Shoupe, his mouth fighting a smirk.
You don’t understand the exchange between the two men, Shoupe’s stare also heavy.
“That’s what we’re trying to do,” Shoupe finally retorts after a few tense moments. He’s the first one to look away, nodding toward you. “Have a good day, Mrs. Cameron.”
Once they’re gone, your eyes find your husband, brows pulled together.
“What was that about?” You ask, trying to find an explanation for his rude behavior.
“What?” Now his unpleasant mood is aimed at you, lips parted, brows matching yours, and you almost regret saying anything. “He’s wasting his time with me. He’s wasting my time. He could actually be out there, catching the person who did it.”
You take in his explanation, arms crossed, eyes glancing to the floor before meeting his.
“I get it. But they’re just doing their job,” you explain. “I mean Chase was murdered, Rafe. You know, the guy you used to see at work every day and liked to invite us over for dinner.”
You try to make it clear to him why he should think about someone besides himself.
He swallows at that, now it’s him who can’t meet your gaze.
You sigh, deciding it’s best to drop it. You know how Rafe is, how difficult it is for him to not only process his own emotions, but others as well.
You step closer, your hand finding his by his side, fingers threading together. You feel the cool touch of his gold, signet ring against your warm skin, along with his wedding ring.
He doesn’t move away, and you can’t help but think he looks like a scolded little boy as he finally looks up at you, hair failing into his eyes.
“I know this has been a lot for you,” you start. “You know you can always talk to me. About anything.”
You watch him, hoping he’ll finally open up to you about this whole situation.
Instead, he just nods, his hand falling from yours before he walks to the kitchen, finding his phone.
You have to stop yourself from sighing, showing your disappointment.
“I talked to my dad earlier,” he calls out, walking toward you with his phone in his hand. “He wants us over for dinner on Sunday. Something about wanting everyone together since Sarah’s back for the summer,” he mumbles the last part, and you can tell he’s trying his hardest not to roll his eyes.
“Oh, that should be nice. We haven’t been over there in a while.” You keep your tone optimistic, hoping it will influence his own outlook.
But by the look on Rafe’s face, it’s not working. He seems more distracted than anything else.
“I gotta take this,” he holds his phone up, excusing himself to his office upstairs.
You’re more than aware of Rafe’s strained relationship with his family. Part of you wants to tell him to forget about his father, thinking it would be best for him to release himself from the shackles of desperately vying for his father’s approval.
But you also know that this house didn’t pay for itself. Even if the name Cameron holds weight in certain places, you’d be lying if you said Rafe could get a job anywhere, especially as good as the one he has now.
You thought Rafe having to work for his father could only help the relationship, and it does seem like they’re friendlier to each other, Ward seeing his son as somewhat competent. But the pressure still lies on Rafe to be good enough.
So, all you can do is keep the peace.
Maybe you have your own motives to keep things nice between Rafe and his family. Sometimes, they feel like the only family you have, even if it’s a bit dysfunctional.
You’re an only child, and your parents decided when you moved out that they were going to spend most of their time on vacation, seeing the world they didn’t get to when you were growing up.
Right now, they’re on a Caribbean cruise, the last time you saw them being your wedding.
You miss them, but you don’t really blame them. Maybe you’ll feel the same one day, when your own children are grown up and married.
They were always extremely supportive of your relationship with Rafe, never seeing any issues. Their happiness at the possibility of their daughter marrying into the Cameron’s blinded them.
You’re glad they didn’t see the things you saw because they might not have been as forgiving. You saw firsthand how hard Rafe worked to clean up his addiction, and to stop the tendency to get into fights with Pogues.
But you wonder if they had known, would they have even batted an eye?
JJ doesn’t think he’ll ever get used to sitting in your kitchen. He thinks you’re only pretending not to notice how much he stands out, because you never seem bothered by it. You just smile as you hand him an ice-cold drink. This time, it’s iced tea.
You were folding laundry when you heard JJ slip into the backyard. This time, he didn’t put up a fight, letting you invite him in.
“So,” you say, sitting across from him at the kitchen table. “I heard Sarah’s back for the summer. Is she still with John B?”
“I thought you were her sister-in-law or whatever, wouldn’t you know?” He asks, taking a long sip of his drink.
“Yeah, well, Rafe and Sarah don’t really talk.”
JJ raises his eyebrows, humming, an understanding washing over his face.
“They’re still together. She’s over at The Chateau almost every day now,” he answers.
You smile, nodding. “So, you still see your friends a lot?”
You were pretty removed from the people Sarah started hanging out with during her high school years. They were younger…and they were Pogues. But you cared about her enough to want to know about her friends.
You also knew them for other reasons, ones having to do with a dumb rivalry stemming from your husband’s hatred of Pogues.
You never got to know any of them, talking to John B the most out of all of them.
Until now.
“Yeah. Everyone’s doing their own thing now, but we get together all the time,” he casually says.
“I’m glad to hear that. I remember you all being so close.”
“Hm.” He stops, his brow furrowing. “You remember that before or after we would get the shit kicked out of us by Rafe?”
Your smile falters, eyes finding the surface of the table.
Before you can say anything, he continues, “but he’s different now. So, I should just forget about it.”
Sarcasm drips from his tone, using your own words against you. He raises his eyebrows again, taking another sip, making his point.
“I never said you should forget about it,” you scoff. “I know what Rafe did was wrong. Do you hold what he did against Sarah too?”
“You can’t choose your family,” he shrugs. “I mean she barely talks to him as it is. You married him.” He pauses, blue eyes staring into you. “That means you looked at all that, and thought, I want to be with this guy for the rest of my life.”
He immediately begins to feel bad when you frown. He sighs, realizing he took it too far.
“I’m sorry, okay?” He apologizes bluntly. “You seem nice and all, I just can’t trust someone who’s married to Rafe Cameron,” JJ explains.
“You don’t have to trust me,” you level with him. “And I can apologize for all of Rafe’s wrongdoings over and over again, because I am sorry. But is that really going to make you feel better?”
He looks to his lap, bottom lip between his teeth. He knows you’re being sincere, your eyes genuinely curious.
“You’re right, there’s no point in holding it against you,” he admits quietly.
You nod, taking a moment before saying, “Good, because I actually like talking to you, for some reason,” you add the last part with a smile on your face.
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say that to me before,” he says with a smile, the same joking tone.
You’ve been to Tannyhill more times than you could count, and it never fails to impress you.
Rafe has told you more than once, usually when he has a few drinks in him, that one day it will be “ours.” You think it’s somewhat morbid that he’s waiting for the day his father can’t physically have it anymore. But you also can’t help but feel a glimmer of anticipation about being able to call it yours.
As you walk side by side, you can feel the nervousness radiating off of Rafe, even if he tries his hardest to stamp it down.
You say his name, stopping a few feet from the front door, turning toward him.
He looks at you, a question in his eyes.
Before he can say anything, you bring your hands to his firm chest, smoothing out the black polo shirt he’s wearing. You feel him let out a sigh.
“Babe-.”
You cut him off with a kiss, lashes fluttering against his cheek.
“I just wanted to do that before we went in there,” you quietly say against his lips when you break apart.
You get your satisfaction when his lips turn up into a smile.
But your attention is quickly moved when you hear the door creak open.
“Dad said to get the door,” Wheezie says timidly, eyes shifting around.
You meet Rafe’s eyes again, both of you hiding your laughs.
“Hi, Wheezie,” you greet, walking into the cool air of the house.
You hear Rafe say the same right behind you, shutting the door.
“Are you still taking me shopping before Midsummers?” She doesn’t waste a second to excitedly ask you. “Sarah’s too busy and I’d rather go with you than Rose.”
She grimaces at the mention of her stepmother.
“I’ve been looking forward to it. Why don’t we go sometime this week?”
You don’t notice how Rafe watches you make plans with his little sister, an indescribable emotion swimming in his blue eyes.
“We were wondering when you’d get here,” a booming voice announces.
Ward walks into the room with a grin on his face.
“How you doing, sweetheart?” he asks, pulling you into a hug.
“I’m doing good. Nice to see you, Ward,” you reply, still smiling.
As he steps away from you, you notice how Rafe shifts a little, standing up straighter.
“Hi, Dad.”
“Son,” is all Ward says, patting Rafe on the back, his smile more tight-lipped now.
They share a look, something wordless between them before Ward turns to you.
“Rose is in the kitchen, getting dinner ready. And Sarah should be down soon. I’m just going to borrow Rafe for a few minutes. I hope you don’t mind,” he checks with you, eyebrows raised.
“No, go ahead,” you nod, watching them head toward his office.
“I’ll go see what Sarah’s doing,” Wheezie says, also going upstairs, leaving you to wander into the kitchen.
It’s not uncommon for Ward to pull Rafe aside to have a conversation, usually about work. But the glance they gave each other was tense, a seriousness there that you don’t know the reason for.
“This looks delicious, Rose. You’ll have to give me the recipe,” you comment, staring at the sauce she’s stirring.
“My mother used to make this all the time. One of my favorites,” she remarks before being interrupted by Sarah barreling her way toward you.
“There’s my favorite sister-in-law,” she calls out, wrapping her arms around you.
“I’m your only sister-in-law,” you say, laughing, squeezing her back.
“Well, I still think if you really wanted to see me all the time, you didn’t have to marry Rafe to do it.” Amusement dances on her lips. “You could’ve saved yourself a lot of trouble,” she says, trying not to burst out laughing.
“What? You mean, I didn’t have to do that.” Your tone matches hers, and she’s the first one to laugh as you step away from the heat of the kitchen.
“So, tell me all about your first year at UNC?” You ask, eyes on her.
“It was good,” she says with a lack of truthfulness, her furrowed brow giving her away.
“Are you sure?”
She shakes her head, looking around to make sure she’s out of Rose’s earshot.
“I don’t know. I’m just not sure if college is for me,” Sarah says quietly. You nod and she continues, “I just would rather be doing something else with my life. Not being stuck in a classroom with a bunch of other rich kids who are just going to end up working for their fathers.”
You raise your eyebrows, the implication of her words not lost on you.
“Sorry,” she draws back. “That was harsh.”
“No, I get it. You want something different.”
“Yeah. And I want to be with people I actually like.”
“Like John B?”
An involuntary smile makes her lips twitch as she looks down, her cheeks turning rosy.
“Yes, like John B,” she admits, not fighting her smile anymore. “And before you say anything, I know what it sounds like,” she pauses, staring directly at you. “But I won’t be dropping out of college for a boy. It’s for a lot of reasons.”
“I mean, even if that were the case. I can’t really judge you, can I?” You ask, thinking of your own past, and how picking a school was completely dependent on Rafe. “I think you should do what makes you happy.”
“Can you explain that to my dad now?” She jokes, but her smile is appreciative, like it’s all she needed to hear.
Rafe didn’t say much by the time he came back from his dad’s office, just sitting down for dinner like everyone else. You want to ask him about it, but you know it’s best to let him tell you first.
You all eat under incandescent lighting from the chandelier, shining off the silverware and fine china. There has been slight small talk, but things shift when Ward clears his throat from the head of the table, setting down his fork.
“I just want to say, how grateful I am to have the whole family here, together. The year’s not even close to over, and I don’t know if I can express how proud I am.”
Emotion seeps through his words as his eyes rake over the table, everyone intently listens.
“Sarah just completed her first year at college, with straight A’s,” he adds, his smile only growing bigger. Sarah returns the expression, but you can see the slight insincerity to it.
“We also, officially, welcomed Y/N to the family. Of course, I would say she’s been part of this family for years.”
You sheepishly smile, catching Rafe’s eye.
“And Rafe,” he pauses, staring at his son. “Rafe has been working very hard in his position at Cameron Development. Harder than almost anyone, and I’m not just saying that.” He laughs a little. “That’s why, I’ve decided to make him Cameron Development’s new Chief Operating Officer.”
Your lips part with surprise, quickly turning into a smile as you put an arm around Rafe’s shoulders, placing a kiss on his cheek.
“I’m so proud of you,” you whisper, catching the happiness in his eyes.
“I won’t let you down,” he tells his dad.
Wheezie smiles, thinking it must be a big deal, Sarah doesn’t look impressed, and Rose just casually sips her wine.
“Now, I’m not saying I’m expecting any, but maybe an announcement about a grandchild before the end of the year would be nice,” Ward says, half-jokingly.
Your first instinct is to tense up, even if you try not to, your arm moving so just your palm lies on Rafe’s back.
“I think that very well could happen,” Rafe practically promises.
Your face falls a little, trying to keep a sense of lightheartedness in your voice.
“Well, maybe not this year.”
Rafe turns to you at that, giving you a look only you can see. But he bites his tongue from saying anything.
Ward doesn’t push further, saying he’s happy as long as he gets a grandchild. But the damage is done, Rafe not meeting your eyes for the rest of dinner.
Another silent car ride, this time, you can feel the minutes pass by. Rafe doesn’t say a word to you, and honestly, you’re grateful, knowing you don’t want to argue while he’s behind the wheel.
You dread the moment you get home, but at this point, you should be angrier than he is.
He’s still not talking to you when you get home, setting his things down before going upstairs.
He’s almost casual in his actions, but you can tell by the tightness of his jaw and how he can’t look at you, that he’s upset.
You follow him upstairs, repeating his name.
“Rafe,” you call out. “You’re going to have to talk to me. You can’t just give me the silent treatment.”
You find him in the bedroom you two share, slipping off his shoes.
He finally looks at you, and his eyes are ablaze.
“Did you have to say that?” He bitterly asks.
“Say what? The truth?” Your tone matches his. “I just don’t understand why you’re mad. Do you really not want your family to know we’re waiting?”
His teeth sink into his bottom lip, like he doesn’t believe what you’re saying.
“It’s embarrassing, Y/N,” he spits out.
“Embarrassing?” You ask, unsure if you heard him correctly. “It’s embarrassing that your wife gets to decide when she wants to have a baby?”
“That’s not what I meant.” He shakes his head but doesn’t explain further.
“Then what do you mean?” You press.
“It-It’s embarrassing that it looks like we’re not on the same page,” he finally explains, flexing his fingers.
“I agree, Rafe. Then why did you say that? Why did you agree with him when you know I want to wait?”
“Exactly. You want to wait.”
You’re left speechless by his implication, lip almost trembling while you take in his words. This is the first time you’re hearing of this, but you realize certain comments you brushed off might have meant he wanted a baby sooner than later.
“Honestly, it sounds like you don’t want kids at all,” he continues. His face is twisted up, pacing back and forth away from you.
“What?” You ask, your brows knitted together. “I do, you know I do. I just want to be able to grow my career before we have any. You know that.”
“What career?”
You start to feel your chest getting tighter.
“What?”
“You sit at a computer a few times a week. How is that stopping you from having a baby?”
You can feel your eyes starting to sting, not being able to remember a time where Rafe said something so hurtful to you.
“Rafe…” You start.
He shrugs his shoulders. “It sounds like an excuse to me.”
You shake your head, eyes getting glassy.
“Just because you got promoted, doesn’t mean you get to tell me my job doesn’t mean anything.” Rage runs through your voice. “And I hate to say it, but you only have that job for one reason. At least I got my job through my own hard work.”
As soon as the words leave your mouth, regret fills you.
Somehow his eyes harden even more as he steps closer to you.
“You mean the job you barely get any money from?” He asks, getting closer until you have no choice but to step back, your body hitting the wall behind you. “Remind me, who paid for this house? Or for your clothes? Or for-for that stupid soap you insist on ordering from France?”
He’s almost spitting in your face as you feel your shoulders dig into the wall.
“Who paid for all of that?” His voice is loud as he asks again, his fingers still flexing and unflexing as you look up at him with tearful eyes.
It feels like an eternity before you answer.
“Your father,” you rasp out.
You watch in fear as he takes a step back from you, his breathing getting rougher before his fist collides with the wall next to your head.
You flinch, moving your face away as you feel his arm almost graze you.
Tears fall freely from your eyes as he tries to steady his breathing, glancing at his red knuckles.
Finally, you see the realization hit him, his eyes softening at your cowering figure right next to the hole in the wall he made.
“Y/N-.” He begins, stepping closer to you.
“Don’t,” you yell, holding up a hand and stopping him.
He tries to say something, but you speak instead.
“Just go away,” you urge him, and after a moment, he does, leaving you at the scene of the crime.
It's the last day the crew will be spending on the island, and the men have left you in the bar while they load the supplies onto the ship. You don't mind, as you're mending some of their torn clothes while chatting with Cerise, the woman who owns the bar. Cerise is well-informed about the Red Haired Pirates. At least, that's what you surmise from her familiarity and jokes with the crew. The Red Force has stopped on this island before, and their faces are well known in these parts.
Setting Yasopp’s now-mended sash aside, you move on to Lucky’s favorite striped shirt. He owns many striped shirts, as you’ve discovered doing the laundry, but how he’s chosen this one as his favorite is beyond you. Perhaps it’s because of the stain at the bottom; none of his other shirts have a stain like it. Or perhaps it's the most worn in and feels nice against his skin. You can’t figure it out, no matter how long you ponder the topic, and simply deduce it to be a male thing. Or perhaps a pirate thing?
“Certainly not in my repertoire,” you softly say, reaching for a thread color in the set you’ve been provided that best matches the stripes. Lucky Roux is fortunate that his shirt has ripped at the edge of one of the stripes; you can easily hide the repair with your skill set. At least your mother’s intensive needlework lessons are finally coming in handy. There’s something therapeutic about repairing clothing, far more so than mindlessly stitching on a circle loom in some fancy design that will never see the light of day. You like feeling useful around the ship; it makes you feel less guilty about being there in the first place. “I told them I only needed passage, not a place to live on board their ship.”
“Oh, they’d never give passage to a woman in distress and then just drop her off at the nearest port,” Cerise comments, walking over while drying her hands with a towel. “I’ve known those boys for twenty-some-odd years. Shanks isn’t letting you go free because he knows you still need help.”
You pause in your mending, lowering your hands to your lap while contemplating her words. She has a point. Shanks is an honorable man and wouldn’t just ditch you the moment he’d completed what you had asked of him. He hadn’t even wanted to take your pendant as payment! Yes, he took you on board and kept you with him and his crew for three weeks without asking for a single thing.
“I feel like I can take care of myself,” you state, your eyebrows pinching ever so slightly. “I am not well-versed in living by myself, but I am not an invalid nor am I entirely naive to how our world works. All I needed from them was safe passage off Kuri Island, nothing more.”
“You are under the assumption that you have to do everything yourself, Aria,” Cerise wisely informs you, observing you sitting regally on a barstool. Your posture stands out and clearly marks you as someone who doesn’t belong in her bar. “Do you want some advice from an old woman who’s seen a thing or two?”
“I would be honored,” you reply, giving her your full attention. If anything, you know that Cerise’s words are both law and religion to be heeded by everyone in Ingles. When she speaks, you listen.
“The Red Haired Pirates are pirates at heart. The sea is their calling, and they will never be tied down by anything or anyone.” Cerise starts in a frank tone. “They’re fully capable of taking care of themselves, cleaning up after their messes, and mending their own clothing.” Her chin nods to the shirt in your lap. “The only reason why they’re letting you clean up and take care of them is because they want you to feel comfortable on the ship, and if that means you’re doing their laundry and mending their clothes, so be it.”
“They’re… letting me…?” you repeat, trying to control your tone and voice so you don’t show off how upset you are to know this. You want to pull your weight on the ship! Not do things because they let you!! Cerise can see the way your eyes flash in anger and teeth grind together. You’re quite good at controlling your emotions, but she has decades of experience reading people. Leaning against the bar, she pats your hand gripping your water glass.
“Don’t take that the wrong way, missy. They might be pirates, but they are gentlemen, and no woman is going to be cleaning up after them because it’s a societal expectation.” You purse your lips and breathe out through your nose, reigning in your temper.
“I’m essentially freeloading aboard their ship, eating and drinking their supplies, using their facilities and bed… and the only reason why I think I’m pulling some of my weight is because they are allowing me to do so?” Your face is painfully hot and your mind is seething. It’s not quite betrayal material to you, but your heart is very much injured by this knowledge. Is there anything in your life that you are doing because you want to and not because someone else is allowing you to do it?
“Now don’t be getting upset that the gentlemen want to be gentlemen,” Cerise tutts at you sternly. “Besides, it won’t do to have you jump right into an independent life. You’ll get overwhelmed and get yourself into trouble. Sea Lord knows you’ve got the beauty for it. They’re easing you into your new life in a responsible way. You’re lucky to have encountered as honorable men as they are.”
“I just wanted to be treated like every other person,” you say dejectedly, dropping your head into your hand and pushing your nails into your scalp. Cerise hums at you and goes back to cutting up slices of lime and lemon for the night rush.
“Oh dear, they are,” she states. “They treat everyone with the respect that is expected and earned. It is nothing personal to you and your situation. Let them help you, and sneak in things to help them. Just don’t get caught.” You eye the older woman at her last comment.
“Are you telling me to sneak behind their backs?” Cerise shrugs and waves her paring knife around.
“They’re men, not always the brightest in situations and can be too stupid to take care of themselves at times.” You can agree with that statement. You watched Hongo argue with Lucky Roux over a cut he’d gotten trying to juggle knives. It took three days before the cook finally relented to putting a simple bandage on it so it didn’t get infected. “It’s also our job as women to mother them, make them remember that they aren’t invincible, and that having someone take care of them is just as rewarding as it is for them to take care of us. Give and take, girl, no one has to do everything by themselves.”
“You have a point, but the most I can do is sew.” Your sewing skills are actually pretty well-honed… but where does sewing have a place on a ship besides mending clothing? “I don’t even know how to cook.”
“Well, that’s a place to start: learning to feed yourself,” Cerise muses, eyes flickering to the faded oak clock hanging above the bar. It’s seen its fair share of drunk bar fights and revelry. It even weathered being knocked off the wall a time or two. “Tell you what, Aria,” Cerise starts, head tilted to the side in contemplation. “Dinner rush isn’t for another two hours. You come back with me and I’ll put you through my mother’s ringer.”
“Your mother’s ringer?” you repeat in confusion.
“Aye, culinary boot camp.”
Tears stream down your face, welling from your eyes and dripping down your cheeks as you struggle to continue with your lesson. But your eyes sting so bad! You’re fairly certain at this point that what Cerise has you doing could be utilized for torture, not cooking purposes. Who knew simply cutting this root vegetable would cause so much pain and tears?
“Ow,” you weakly mutter, rubbing your watery eye for the thousandth time with the back of your hand. Even with your eyes watering so heavily that it looks like you have been sobbing, you are still persistent in finishing cutting up the onions Cerise has planted in front of you and ordered you to chop.
They all have to be cut a certain way, she told you, showing you the basic knife skill with the first onion of your lesson. It didn’t look hard, and you actually felt comfortable holding the knife, that is until the sting in your eyes bloomed and the tears came. Oh, how it burned, and oh, the look Cerise gave you when you paused in your chopping. A strict teacher she is.
“The faster you cut, the quicker the tears will leave,” she told you, standing across the table from you and chopping vegetable after vegetable without so much as a stutter. You are in awe at how fast she can chop vegetables, barely even glancing at the produce she is cutting. On the bar menu tonight is an Ingles town soup made from vegetables and lamb, the staple meat on the island. According to the bar mistress, a large batch is made, and once it is gone, it is gone.
It is quite the popular soup among the regulars, meaning the bar is going to be packed and the drinks flowing. So you continue cutting these damn onions until you have no tears left in your body, and then continue cutting. She might be teaching you how to cook, but you are eager to contribute and pull your weight for once… and that apparently means cutting an endless amount of onions. You’ll get good at cutting onions by the end of this at least.
Additionally, you can learn to wield a blade by learning how to cook, so you wouldn’t be entirely defenseless before you learn how to defend yourself. It’s not exactly a sword, but a knife is better than a hairpin. Blinking several more tears away from your eyes, you focus back on the onion you are currently chopping. Chop. Peel. Slice. You have to constantly remind yourself to focus on where your blade is going. The three nicks you have on your fingers are proof of that.
Shifting your grip on the knife, you finish chopping the onion and gather the slices to drop into the large bowl next to you. Grabbing the next onion, because Cerise happily dumped another basket of onions next to you, you repeat the same process as you had before.
“Not to be rude, but how is this teaching me how to cook?” you ask, tilting your head to the side as you peel the halved onion in front of you. Cerise chuckles at your words and lifts a large bowl full of cut vegetables to dump it in an even larger pot.
“Chopping vegetables is a large part of cooking easy meals on ships,” Cerise explains. “Get you comfortable with knives, and that’s one hurdle that won’t hold you back. Prepping ingredients is also a good idea. It keeps your kitchen clean and saves time. I’ve got a soup and stew book I’ll give you. I taught you everything you need to know to cook the recipes in the book earlier, and I’m sure that by watching Lucky Roux, you can pick up more skills.”
“Well, I think I can manage to cook scrambled eggs,” you admit, wondering how many eggs you have cracked by now. At least you’ve gotten good at doing that. “Lucky lets me crack the eggs in the morning before Shanks is up, sometimes lets me cook the precooked breakfast sausage. I burned myself on the cooktop once, and he forbade me from going within three paces of it for a week after that.”
“Aye, told you the men were protective. You just have to be firm with them and they’ll eventually see reason,” Cerise says while lighting the giant stove beneath the equally giant pot. The kitchen is soon filled with the soft crackles of vegetables sautéing. While the older woman fusses over the cooking vegetables, you finally cut up the rest of the onions without further incident, much to the relief of your fingers and eyes. You carry the bowl of onions over the large pot and drop the sliced onions into the pot to be cooked as well.
“So, I understand everything you’ve taught me about soups and stews, and you’re going to give me a few books to read… but seasoning is a large part of cooking, and I don’t even know what half the spices are in Lucky’s cabinet.” Your nose wrinkles at the picture of Lucky’s spice cabinet. He keeps it meticulously organized and alphabetized. That’s helpful when learning, but it doesn’t help you in using such spices. “Do I just taste them raw and see what goes well flavor-wise?”
“If you like bad flavor,” she answers dryly before turning to face you. “In your case, I’d suggest following recipes and noting what spices are in them to develop the flavor profile. Then, when you are comfortable, you can start dabbling. Like, mint goes well with artichoke, and cumin with chicken. It’s about what you like. What did you like to eat growing up?” Your brain freezes for a moment.
Freedom of food choice is still a novel idea to you. You don’t know what you like or dislike because your mother fed you what she decided. You have a few food items that you positively loathe due to your mother, but you’ve never had the luxury of deciding to eat or not eat something based on flavor and like alone.
“I… don’t really know,” you admit with a soft shrug of your shoulders. “My mother controlled my diet until I left three weeks ago. I don’t have many memories of foods that I enjoyed eating. It was mostly out of necessity.” Cerise hums in understanding and pauses to think. She has a basic understanding of your situation thanks to a quick word from Shanks. Hongo is trying to ease your stomach into new foods so you don’t get sick like you did the first week on board the Red Force. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have small bites here and there.
“I’d suggest that you try bites of food from different dishes to see what you like and don’t like then, Aria. Not big bites, mind you, sneaky ones so you don’t get Shanks or Hongo on the up and up… but just enough to taste.” That’s actually a good idea. Nodding your head in agreement, you smile, pleased that you have a plan for once. You feel better about staying on the Red Force now. The idea of leaning on the men for help is still difficult for you, but learning to cook puts wind back in your sails.
For the drabble request: how would Bucky handle Lottie’s “first” boyfriend? You know the one every little girl seems to get about preschool age that she says she’s gonna grow up and marry. It could be a child, or an adult.
Something similar was asked not too long ago but let me tell you about Tommy, Charlotte’s first “boyfriend”.
But daddy I love him
He’s alright
Bucky doesn’t like him. Even though they haven’t met yet. There were many conversations about this Tommy kid that always ended with Lottie getting mad at Bucky and Bucky needing to go shoot something.
It was up to you to make Bucky understand that his little girl had a crush and that it would most likely fizzle out by the end of the school year. If it were up to Bucky, he’d lock Charlotte in the compound until she was at least 100 years old. No one was good enough for his little girl.
So after another disagreement you decided to invite Tommy and his parents over for a playdate. Bucky scowled and was in a grumpy mood from the moment you told him about it. His mood worsened on Saturday afternoon when the security guard at the main gate called and said Tommy was here.
“If you mess this up for her, you’re going to be in so much trouble.” You murmur.
“She’ll get over it.”
“I won’t. So behave.” The doorbell rang and you went to open it.
Curiosity got the better of Bucky and he walked up behind you. Standing in front of you was a man with dark blonde hair and a woman with brown hair. In front of them was the boy that was stealing his little girl’s heart. He had bright blonde hair in a sort of bowl cut. His equally bright blue eyes were framed by circular glasses. He was very small but had the biggest smile. He was also holding two flower bouquets.
“Hi Mrs. Barnes. It’s nice to see you again.” He greets you and you could just melt.
“Hello Thomas, it’s nice seeing you. I’m so glad you could make it.” You look up at Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, Tommy’s parents.
“We’re happy to be here. Tommy here won’t stop swooning over Charlotte.”
You feel Bucky behind you so you turn and narrow your eyes in warning.
“This is my husband Bucky.” You introduce him to Tommy’s parents.
Surprisingly he puts on a very charming smile and greets the family.
“Hi Mrs Barnes. This is for you Mrs. Barnes.” Tommy holds up the bigger of the bouquets.
“That is so sweet, thank you Tommy. Please come in.”
As the family of three walk into your home Bucky pulls you back. You look at him expectantly.
“Is it just me or does he look like Steve?” Bucky asks in a hushed tone.
“What? No way.”
“Yes, before the serum, just look at him. Our daughter likes a mini Steve.”
“You’re imagining things.” There are quick footsteps coming down the steps. “Let’s go.”
“Tommy.”
“Charlotte.”
Both kids giggle as they run towards each other and embrace. The flowers Tommy was holding are now squished between them but they’re too happy to care.
“These are for you.”
Charlotte takes the slightly crumpled flowers.
“Oh thank you, they’re so nice. It’s gonna so much fun today, Tommy.” Lottie says.
“Sweet Angel, don’t forget to say hi.”
“Hi mistuh and misses Anduh-son.”
“Hello Charlotte. Thank you for inviting Tommy to play today.”
“It’s a date.” Lottie announces proudly. “Mama and Dada go on dates cuz they lobe each othuh.”
“I’m sure they do.” Mrs. Anderson agrees through giggles of her own.
“Why don’t you sit and I’ll set the kids up in the play room.” You offer before turning to Bucky. “I have everything ready to go in the kitchen if you want to grab some drinks.”
“Sure thing Sugar.”
“Ok c’mon kids. I have a surprise for you.”
Lottie and Tommy hold hands while you take them to the playroom. Bucky is going to need a trip to the shooting range before this day is over.
“Mr. Barnes.” Bucky turns his attention to his guests.
“Please call me Bucky.”
“Bucky, we’d just like to say that your daughter is so special.” Mr. Anderson says. “See Tommy gets sick easily and he’s always getting picked on and your daughter was the first kid to be friends with him.”
Bucky can’t help but feel proud of his girl.
“Yeah, she loves to make friends.”
“And Tommy is completely smitten.”
“Yeah, Lottie won’t stop talking about Tommy.”
“Must be driving you nuts.” Mr. Anderson jokes and Bucky can’t help but chuckle.
“What can I say she’s my little girl.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few hours later and it was time for your guests to leave. Overall it had been a great play date. The adults got along well and the kids played so much they tired themselves out. At the door you were saying your goodbyes.
“Thank you again for having us.”
“I’m glad you came maybe we can do this again.” You smile before looking at Tommy, who was in his father’s arms. “Maybe we can show you around and you’ll get to meet some of the Avengers.”
“That would be so cool!”
“Well we won’t keep you anymore thanks again.” Mr. Anderson says but before he can leave Tommy speaks up.
“Thank you Mr. Barnes, you’re awesome.”
Bucky gives a little thanks and a take care before you close the door.
“So what do you think?” You ask. He can’t possibly hate this kid anymore.
“He’s alright.”
