what kind/style of endbands do you usually do? they look so good 👀
hi!! sorry for taking a while to answer, I wanted to make sure I could give you my best answer.
I usually do what's called a "double core" endband. I use double core endbands over the "bead on front" method because bead on front style is not great for uneven distributions of color, irregular patterns, or using more than three colors. Functionally it works by having your extra threads wrapped up inside the thread that is showing, forming the smaller secondary core. Ultimately you are doing figure 8s around the main core & then your secondary core of thread. This keeps things pretty neat & tidy. The tutorial I first used was this one by DAS Bookbinding, though I don't think his endband tutorials are his best ones. Another binder I've spoken with endbands about a lot is maleeka, who recently did an endband tutorial herself.
maybe I should do one... but it takes a lot for me to get enough motivation to make videos. I'll take this opportunity to write up some tips I've shared when people ask instead:
1. Endband core material is the MOST IMPORTANT component. You need a core that is stiff but flexible - it should NOT be floppy because it wiggles everywhere under the tension of the thread, but still needs to flex with the opening & closing of the book. You want something that doesn't compress, to reduce tension shifts in thread creating a lumpy endband. Have a smooth core is less critical but helps to avoid snagging threads & allows you some leeway on sliding threads around for adjustments. My personal choice is smooth leather jewelers cord (link is just an example, I get mine from a local craft store).
2. Thread size. All your threads need to be the same size; it will be visible if you are using two different sizes, and mess with your front core. Additionally, I know lots of people will use larger twists of multiple strands of embroidery thread, which can work, but is more likely to compress & alter its size in unexpected ways. A single strand is preferable. If you want something thicker you can find some thread weights that are heavier twists intended to be used in a single strand, not pulled apart. I prefer smaller sizes because it works better for the gradient designs I like.
3. Silk thread is your friend (if you can spend the money on it). It reduces fuzz (no fuzz like you get with cotton/DMC embroidery thread), it's usually easier to manage, has a more compact twist, and a higher shine. I use Japanese silk hand sewing thread in size #9 (9号). There's multiple brands (Tire, Daruma, KNK/kanagawa, etc). Here's a wholesale listing (minimum 20,000¥ for international). A non-Japanese brand is Guterman silk (German brand). Both the Japanese & German threads come in a heavier weight (Japanese is #16, Guterman is buttonhole).
4. Thread tension is the most important part of the actual technique. You need to ensure the threads currently wrapped in the secondary core keep tension when you are working the thread around them.
5. Working on a curve. This is only really relevant if you're doing an endband on a rounded book, but the circumference of the curve means there's more real estate on the outside vs inside of the curve. Sometimes this can cause bunching on the secondary core. My own solution to this is that sometimes I wrap the primary core but drop a wrap here or there around the secondary core (only between two wraps of the same color I'm dropping). I uh... don't know of anyone currently recommending this besides myself so I can't point to any pro endorsement for this method, it's just what works for me. Forgive my terrible writing:
Tumblr media
6. Pattern management. I... don't really plan much how my patterns sit on the spine, which is not very helpful. HOWEVER you can do some pattern management on the fly, if you really want your pattern to end at a certain place. Thread can be packed more or less densely on the core, resulting in some pattern compression; you could also strategically drop wraps in less noticeable locations. An unintended example: I was replicating the pattern on this endband (left) when I realize I wasn't packing the thread as densely as I had the first time around (right), which resulted in the overall pattern taking up more space. You can do this on purpose, if you need to.
Tumblr media
this was way more than you asked but it gave me a chance to put all this in one spot. Best of luck in vanquishing the dreaded EndWyrms.

AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH delusional post from me again augh still thinking about monte cristo's design.... the way there's just these cracks on his face that runs down like tears, and from it, on his left eye is like that. normally, Servants bleed and get hurt before disappearing to golden ether to return to the throne, having finished their roles in a grail war but Idmond has these cracks in his face that goes far beyond any normal injury you'd see on anyone.
what he used as fuel for the fake tokyo- to create 10 million inhabitants to set the stage- was his very own soul. it was neither flesh or blood or anything simple... it was the soul itself in which he took from his own so as to set the hunting ground to be as real as possible, for an immersion to be set for the sake of one person alone. a spirit origin receiving resources from chaldea is not enough. and so he takes his entire arm but that too isnt enough, and so gouges his eye out along with the contents all the way a little past his forehead.
and so you see darkness. and so you see shadow. the flames engraved into his being. and so you see his own void.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
knk collab automatically comes to mind... despite it being years already its really something else once enough time has passed. its just so scarce but it would be so interesting and amazing if we had more monte cristo and shiki conversations!! they dont even have a line for each other in the game! i think thats so?? grr???
dantes was originally summoned by goetia as a shadow of himself and in ogawa heim, his primary objective was to collect such curses and grudges to remember who he is as he was summoned simply completely to be nothing more than a tool. a husk of himself and yet had his own fateful encounter with a star... and it allowed him to be far more than that- allowed him to be a tiny light of hope and got to witness a star's determination... and as for void shiki she had her own encounter with guda and refers to their encounter as a dream- an ephemeral dream that she was elated to have because she is void and thus she shouldnt have any personality and in that meeting alone, summonable void is just so happy- (the Root herself) bc guda gave her awareness and her own ego when she embodies nonexistence itself and thus even should this be a fleeting dream it was one that gave her happiness nonetheless.
and so monte cristo becomes a little like shiki... fleeting now as flame like a dream, an existence that has met guda and were at first 'empty' from the start...and deadass fell in love because both are beings with one of them were robbed of happiness in the cruelest way possible and so knows love and hate more than anyone else/have nothing from the start and is literally the origin of nothingness and just this fateful encounter with a star one who cannot ever turn away from someone in pain no matter the circumstances reached out with a hand- was enough to change them both and???? wtfff im going insane AGHHHHHH
sidenote: roystbrave sensei again with a shiki-dantes comic that makes me insane i need more of them as i only know the one art of ryougi sharing her cigarette pack to dantes AGHHHHh

A/N: Before I get into this, I'd like to make some notes! Welcome to my little story thing which I've yet to name. I made this on a whim, so it's not good...but I hope you'll enjoy it! The only reason I've decided to post this is because I haven't been drawing, apologies! Thank you for reading this and without further ado, here is the story! (Story of my KNK (Kara no Kioku) Oc) (aaa the anxiety!!)
Prologue
Yuuko had always had a disinterest in people, preferring to dwell in her warm world of fiction and distance herself from reality. Her habit was annoying. It was rather bothersome, a chore, as it were. She had found herself getting a sensation of anxiety and the feeling of panic whenever she talked to people, particularly strangers or people she weren't particularly close to. On top of that, she had such thoughts as "this is such a pain" or "why won't anyone shut up?" whenever she interacted with the outside world. It was as if she lacked desire, only being able to feel alive when distracted in a world unexisting, and lacking emotions. Such a lukewarm feeling had been straddling on her shoulders ever since she could remember. No, saying that would be a lie. She remembered exactly when it had happened, and what the problem was. Or rather, who.
"Uko-chan!"
A voice called to Yuuko from a too-close-for-comfort range.
"Uko-chan, Uko-chan!"
The girl's eyes fluttered open with a few quick blinks before she lifted her gaze upwards, as if she was looking at the sky, or rather the ceiling. She didn't put in the effort to lift her head, as if she already anticipated what was meeting with her gaze. A young boy, appearing to be a childhood age, hovered over her face, a broad smile filled his facial features. However, this was no ordinary boy. The boy's eyes looked as if they were made out of shadows, pitch-black and lifeless, he also had an odd mark plastered on his left cheek. Yuuko was sure it wasn't a scar.
The problem was here. He was always here. It was always by her side.
Speaking truthfully, Yuuko blamed him for her unfulfilling lifestyle, her habit to distance herself. He was the reason for her emptiness. As if that wasn't enough reason to detest him, he was odd, loud, annoying and misleading, all the qualities she hated in a person. If he counted as a person, she didn't know. However, Yuuko had an understanding that he wouldn't leave. He would always be there for her, so she didn't need friends, or to talk to people. The only thing that was mandatory to keep, was him.
Yuuko raised an eyebrow as the boy was straddled on her shoulders.
"What is it, Haruki?" She spoke in a whisper, as to not come off as a freak.
After all, she was in the middle of class.
"Nevermind! Haruki thought Uko-chan was asleep!" Haruki, in contraindication, had zero hesitation, his voice in a childish near retort.
No, the reason wasn't because she was in class. It was because Haruki was invisible, invisible to everyone except her. They couldn't see him, nor hear him. Was he a hallucination? The thought had crossed her mind, but no, she had confirmed he was very, very, real. Perhaps everyone else was fake and him and herself were the only real beings in the world.
At least, she wanted that to be the case.
The girl let out the quietest possible sigh she could, before returning her eyes straightforward. The teacher was continuing his lecture, fortunately not noticing Yuuko supposedly talking to herself. How weird would that be? The teacher would probably be terrified of her. What kind of psychopath does that? Talk to herself in the middle of class, the audacity.
But she was calmed by the reality that he continued his boring lecture without a care, though she already knew all of the answers, she devoted the rest of the lesson to concentrating on her work after her daydream. The inhuman boy observed quietly.
Eventually, sixth period came to an end and it was time for the students to return home. Yuuko finished packing her belongings into her schoolbag in a flash, and had already rushed out of the door before anyone could talk to her. Who would dare to perform such a stunt, she wondered. But she could never be certain about anything, expect the unexpected, they say. She was trying to convince herself it was that, but she knew it was mere paranoia.
Haruki floated beside her as she walked, his feet lifted from the ground, levitating. Yuuko paid no mind to glance at him, she knew he was always by her side.
She continued her way out of the school, giving curt head bows if anyone greeted her, before she reached the shoe box. She placed her bag down and hurriedly took her shoes off, applying her outdoor ones and placing her indoor ones back into the box. She grabbed her bag and briskly left the school gates, not daring to look back for company. Finally leaving the gates, she slowed her pace as she was confident no one would follow her. If they did, she could easily call them out for stalking, since there was no one she was particularly close with. But instead of going home, Yuuko took a sharp turn in her route and at last, she was alone.
"Where is Uko-chan going today?" Haruki inquired, curious of today's detour.
"Somewhere quiet, with no people." She answered bluntly, though she had intended for her tone to be softer than that.
"No people? Isn't that lonely?"
"I've been surrounded by people the entire day, I think school is enough social interaction for me."
Yuuko contradicted Haruki's point with one of her own as she walked against the rim of the empty park. The grass was a refreshing green and the cherry blossom trees bloomed pale pink flowers on them, giving the vicinity a warm feeling. Her lips slightly tugged upwards into a small smile, her eyes carefully watching over the delicate petals, playfully swaying in rhythm with the breeze. Haruki floated beside her as she continued her walk, her pace leisurely. He looked around.
"It's very quiet here."
Yuuko darted her eyes to him, "...too quiet?"
The boy nodded, "Could there be a dangerous shadow here?"
Yuuko froze her feet in place in realisation of her carelessness. He was right. It was quiet. Too quiet. And Yuuko hadn't known this area to be a particularly secluded place. Or, did she know this area at all? Her green eyes darted around anxiously for any odd creatures, but nothing in sight fitted the description.
She sighed in relief, "Don't scare me like that, Haruki.'
He frowned, "Haruki was just trying to say to be careful..."
But Haruki was right, she thought. It was too quiet. Deathly silent. There must be a shadow here, there must. But she would have been able to sense it, so what was happening? Nothing good, that was the only thing she was sure of.
"Haruki, let's go now." She attempted to conceal the panic in her voice, but she didn't know how much was audible.
Haruki gave a shocked face, "Eh?! Why so sudden?!"
"Because I have a bad feeling about this!" She retorted back.
However, Haruki didn't seem to share the same anxiety as her, "But Haruki wanted to pick the flowers!", he whined.
"Haruki!" She called his name sharply, as if to warn him.
He took the warning and gave a pout, his cheeks puffing, "Fine...", he muttered in a small, disappointed voice.
Yuuko rushed out of the park, clutching her bag strap tightly so it wouldn't slip off, but she quickly came to another halt. Realisation struck her once again.
"Wait, where are we?"
She questioned herself, though she made her voice audible enough for the inhuman boy to hear her. Sweat began to trickle down her forehead and her eyes widened in disbelief. She was sure she had run in the direction in which she came in, but the scenery was completely different. She was in a completely different place. Was she dreaming? Was she hallucinating? Was she crazy? The same thoughts she had when she had first met Haruki raced through her head. But that would mean the outcome was the same, and she was not crazy. This was real. It was no dream or hallucination. Haruki's suspicion was right, there was a shadow. That was far stranger than what was happening right now, Haruki's intuition being corrected was almost unbelievable.
She was lost now.
There was a shadow.
She knew it now.
There was something causing this, something the same being as Haruki-
-she narrowed her eyes in mental exhaustion, "oh boy...."

Talk Shop Tuesday: If you could immediately pluck one story/concept/idea from your brain and have it fully formed in front of you, exactly as you would want, what would that idea be? Can you describe it to us, along with any potential factors that are slowing you down/blocking you from creating it in the first place? Thanks! <3 -@fieldsofview
okay here me out; this is gonna be so niche but l&co knk au! i love l&co and knk is my top anime ever and just mashing those two together would make my brain so happy!! it would probably follow the anime trajectory but blood warrior lockwood?? half-youmu lucy?? barrier warrior george?? IT WOULD BE SO COOL!!
i think the blockers for this are (problem 1) the fact that it's so niche so i don't really have anyone else to bounce ideas off for this due to problem 2: i can't figure out who would fit best in what role. like you could swing lockwood in any direction. blood warrior lockwood? inherent sexiness of magic blood and banging sword skills, the role's made for him. but half-youmu lockwood? the tragedy of being split between two race and having nobody to guide him through it. the self-loathing and fear he would feel is just chef's kiss. but then barrier warrior lockwood?? he would be so good at it and being the one to shield the people he loves and protecting them?? GAH i literally have this argument with myself about every single character every single time i try to think harder about this au
if this could just emerge fully formed i'd want it to be so fun and action-packed and angsty and those very specific nighttime magic youmu vibes like the magic in knk is just so smooth and gorgeous, kyoani outdid themselves with this series. now i just wanna rewatch it again LOL but yeah there are just way too many competing factors for this to ever be fully realized. but i;m never gonna be satisfied if i don't realize it, yknow?
