Yarn bombing for Be Well Week
We will be running sessions from 12pm to 1pm from 8 October to 12 October every day in 4 West Foyer. Pop along and try out crochet and knitting and add squares to the benches!
Yarn bombing is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk. It is also called yarn storming, guerrilla knitting, kniffiti, urban knitting, or graffiti knitting.
Mind are a mental health charity who provide help and support directly to those who need it most. They have a network of around 135 local Minds who offer specialised support and care based on the needs of the communities they support.
It is thought that knitting and crochet can help to relieve stress – so what better way to promote the charity!
We are hoping its colour presence on the parade will draw attention to Mind. You can also donate money for all the time and effort everyone has put into doing it!
If you would like to donate squares to be part of the kniffiti – please drop them into 4 West Student Services up until 4.30pm on 12 October.
If you would like to donate money, we are taking donations on our fundraising page.

Thirsk has adopted yarn bombing in a big way. It’s the town where I first came across it, at Remembrance tide two years ago. St. Mary’s church was festooned – drowned almost – in a sea of poppies knitted by keen volunteers from miles around. It was a arresting, beautiful, and had the effect they were seeking. As we paused to look and admire, we did indeed remember the fallen of the two World Wars.

This year, Thirsk asks us to remember the NHS (National Health Service), now 70 years old. Various knitted offerings are clustered in the Market Square. It’s witty, charming, and reminds us all how much almost every one of us is grateful for the NHS and all who work in it.

Netizens debate over yarn bombs in Shanghai
A couple of trees in Shanghai became a local delight after they were draped in yarn knittings last Thursday. However, the beauty and fame didn’t last long, as the Shanghai government removed the much adored accessories on Wednesday.
The phoenix trees on Nanchang road were “yarn bombed” by a group of expats, the Shanghai Daily reported. Yarn bombing, also known as graffiti knitting or “kniffiti,” is a kind of street art that uses colorful displays of knitted yarn on public facilities. The movement is believed to have originated in Texas, US, in 2005 after Magda Sayeg first covered the door handle of her boutique with a knitted cozy.
As the colorful outfits successfully stunned passersby the next morning, netizens also showed their admiration towards the creative works, saying “they added beauty to the city.”
However, on Wednesday, one week after the incident, the city government removed the outfits, citing concerns that they would cause harm to the trees’ healthy growth.
This decision has triggered heated discussions online. While some say the government made the right decision, others are arguing that the city should be more open to creative minds.
“I can understand the government’s concerns, but maybe they could have kept the decorations up longer. They made the street appear more dynamic,” commented @Shiqiangqiang.
“The sweaters that fit human bodies may not suit the trees as well,” argued @Yueluoxishanby.
