THIS IS HARD!!!! When I dream of a fic, I simply write it.... there is one genre of fic that I really adore but can't bring myself to write and it's daemon aus, as in His Dark Materials. I *adore* the sort of "spirit animal" concept but I just can't write it myself! And this AU is so rare I can barely find any fics for it, especially in modern fandoms!!! It's such a dilemma for me, I'm begging *anyone* willing to write it.

I find myself wanting existing fics to update more, though. For instance, Whumpbby has a couple fics they haven't updated in years (no hate obviously, that's just how the cookie crumbles sometimes) but their Reaper76 one and Voltron Gijinka ones are really good and I am BEGGING for more. Well, I can't recommend enough! Aside from the ones above, there's:

want to see your animal side by blackkat (but blackkat has said they want to distance themselves from this fandom so.... sigh). It's a Naruto yokai au Kakashi/Zabuza fic that's deliciously spicy and builds on Naruto's lore nicely. This is the fic that inspired my own fic series In the Snowfields!

Pretty Hyung Who Buys Me Food by InBooks which is a S Classes that I raised fic, Sung Hyunjae/Han Yoojin ofc, where instead of regressing 5 years, he regressed 20 and lost his memories 👀 sweet and funny and adorable, highly recommend

Never Ever by LostOzian (their archive) is a Tiger and Bunny fic, Omegaverse bc that's how we roll, where Tiger hasn't smelled a compatible Alpha that he liked ever, until Barnaby came along. The tension is so tight it could be a yaoi uke's asshole. Highly, highly recommend if you like slow burn and forced-proximity

A World of One Color by The Big Roman (Hammocker) is a Roman Sionis (Black Mask)/Jason Todd fic series that I drool over every time I think about it. Sadistic yet caring Roman and a Jason desperate to be loved, muah. Chefs kiss. Honestly anything in the Jason/Roman ao3 tag is perfect.

Designation: Miracle by Umisabaku is a kuroko no basket fic with all the classic pairings (and a curveball with my favorite, Akashi/Furihata) which is a sci fi au of KNB. Her summary is the best so I'll just copy:

"It's been three years since seven human experiments, called "Miracles," escaped Teiko Industries, alerting the world to the presence of super-powered children. Now they're finally integrating into society-- going to normal high schools, playing basketball, falling in love-- and trying to find out if it's possible to truly escape their past."

I find it so difficult to get into plot-heavy fic, especially these days, but this fic is a downright masterpiece. I can't emphasize enough: if you're going to read anything on this list, read this. The plots emotional and technical beats never disappoint, and Umisabaku has a rich and wonderful range of OCs that are just as if not more interesting than the characters we know. They've also written stunning original fiction you can find on their Tumblr!!! @/umisabaku

tbh while were always saying knb isnt that gay and people are just reading it w yaoi goggles when the subtext actually is not there at all. i do actually genuinely feel like reading kise and kasamatsus relationship as romantic really undermines the significance of it. its a beautiful relationship & show of kises growth theres nothing romantic about it. putting it in that sort of context removes all the stuff about it that make it so powerful

brother crab's winter 2024 parting thoughts: dog signal

alright well yysy it's not much to look at, the animation/art style isn't exactly "modern" or exceptional (though personally i was quite charmed by it)

that aside, this was overall a really pleasant surprise to me!

tl;dr: fun cast with some surprisingly compelling and deep(ish) backstories, would recommend but with the disclaimers that a) it's episodic and b) there's quite a lot of animal mistreatment since each episode is about helping a dog whose person isn't treating it right (most if not all the cases have hopeful endings, but some parts may be hard to watch)

also niwa and samura have the most HILARIOUSLY classic toxic yaoi situationship without any of the fun parts (the actual yaoi), more on that later lmao

full review:

the series is for the most part episodic, with each episode dealing with a dog owner who comes to a certain dog trainer for help. i'm a fan of a good episodic series, even when the episodes can be hit or miss, so the structure was very enjoyable for me

the stories of the main cast were surprisingly compelling, too. it seemed like it would be just a very silly show—what with it starting with a guy (cv knb murasakibara) walking another guy (cv knb kuroko) around on a leash in public for two hours—but the character backstories that were revealed throughout the series did actually feel delightfully nuanced to me

(for example "yeah that old man did hit a dog and that's not great but the dog in question was biting the shit out of the kid he sees as a son so it's not... not understandable that he would react that way and while i'm not saying he should be proud of hitting a dog i guess i am saying it does suck for him that son guy hated him and went no contact for years for it")

one of my favorite episodes, ironically, barely involved the main cast at all. most of the episodes deal with this dog training business training dogs (shock!) but in this one episode, fairly late in the series, the owner was a struggling mangaka suffering from immense social anxiety, whose only friend was his dog who one day suddenly loses his hearing

that's such a tough thing that you really wouldn't explain anyone to know how to handle on their own without training. the mangaka even runs into the mc (trainee dog trainer) early in the episode and receives a business card for the dog training shop, but instead of taking his dog in, he does his best on his own to develop ways to communicate with his newly deaf dog

and it works! not only does he find a way to keep his dog comfortable with him, his efforts make him less concerned with what other people think of him as well. he managed to go to the dog training shop in the end, to see if there's anything he could be doing better for his dog, only to be told that they can't do anything for him—because he's already done everything right

(in establishing a way to communicate with his deaf dog, that is. there are other issues he gets chewed out for, which i really liked and found realistic)

i feel like it was just such a well-timed episode as a narrative device, because it shows that while the main dog trainer is great (the trainee dog trainer mc practically worships him) it's not that everyone in the world is helpless without him

but anyway

REGARDING THE SITUATIONSHIP WHAT THE FUCK LMAO first of all i love it

samura has just been dumped by an extremely shitty girlfriend when he meets niwa, while out walking the dog (or attempting to walk the dog) said shitty girlfriend dumped on him

he's doing a terrifically bad job, to the point where niwa (pro dog trainer) can't bear to watch. so what does he do well of course he has to reeducate samura by... putting him on a leash and walking him around the park, in public, for two hours. to show him just how wrong he's treating his dog

samura somehow gets a job out of this and they start working together. at one point he reveals he is GOING TO THE SALON and GETTING HIS HAIR PERMED so that it is curly because niwa has a poodle and seems to like curly hair (???)

jump cut to the final episode and we're finding out samura's tragic lore—parentified by a narcissistic mom, down with too much filial piety disease. when samura finally decides he's no longer sending money back home, his mom comes to the dog training shop to be like "sir uwu you have to give my son a raise so he can keep sending money home uwu he's such a good hard-working boy please pay him what he's worth"

and niwa is straight up like "actually he sucks and you suck get the fuck out of my shop" AND THEN LATER IN THE EPISODE samura's mom calls him (has been calling him repeatedly since meeting his freak of a boss) and NIWA ANSWERS THE PHONE and while she's complaining about the money situation and the freak boss (niwa) he basically tells her "you still suck and your son still sucks but i'm keeping him, fuck off"

like my god?? that woman is going to go away thinking her son has gotten into an extremely abusive relationship with his boss. i mean fuck her entirely, she does suck, but that is very much Not the situation (even though it does Very Much appear to be the situation)

anyway. ultimately this one lands in the :) category for me, originally picked it up for the cast (kuroko and mukkun and also KENN) and didn't have very high expectations but am thrilled to be pleasantly surprised

Title: Ice Cream Date Fluff No Warning

You were in the process of doing your homework, and studying for your upcoming tests when your phone began to ring. You let a sigh out and looked over at it, only to see a familiar name that made you smile.

“Takao, what do you want?” You answered and you could have sworn you heard his pout.

“What are you doing right now?”

“Homework.”

“Come outside, me and Shintarou want to go on an ice cream date with you.”

“Eh!? Already!? I am not dressed!” 

“We will wait, but I am sure you lo-” you had already hung up and let your messy hair down before hopping in the shower. You wasn’t about to go on a date with your favorite two people in the world looking the way you did. 

“She hung up on me.” Takao said with a pout and Shintarou adjusted his glasses.

“Well we did kind of spring this onto her, she probably didn’t have any intentions of leaving the house, nandaou…” 

“She probably looks fine though.”

“Of course she does, she probably doesn’t think so though,” Takao puffed his cheeks as they waited for you. 

You had already showered and began to style your hair, and did your make up but you made sure it was light. You then put on (f/c) dress before grabbing your wallet and phone before heading out. You saw them waiting for you and they both stared at you with small blushes on their faces.

“You look really pretty.” Takao said kissing your cheek, and you couldn’t help but smile.

“Thank you.” You returned the kiss to his cheek before leaning up and kissing Shintarou on the cheek as well. He looked away though he held your hand in his head. Shintarou was the very definition of a tsundere but you knew that he cared for you and Takao. Takao took your hand as well and smiled widely. 

“You guys look very handsome,” Takao had a bright smile and Midorima was a blushing mess. 

“Told you Shin~chan…you look really handsome. He was really concerned about it.”

“Shut up, I was not, nandaou,” 

“You were, you changed like three times before finally settling for an outfit.”

“Did he settle or did you force him to settle by kissing him?” 

“….” Both boys were blushing and you grinned before pouting.

“You guys always kiss each other without me around,” you pouted and both boys eye’s widen.

“We are sorry, we just mmff.” Midorima had shut Takao up by kissing him, since you looked like you were about to cry. The sudden action shocked Takao and you, you both were blushing. Takao wrapped his arms around Midorima’s neck and instantly began to kiss back.

“G-Guys I was joking, we are in public!” You said hiding your face, your heart wasn’t ready for that. Midorima parted and adjusted his glasses, and he had a slight smirk on his face. Takao cleared his throat, he was the one that normally initiated the kisses with Midorima so he was blushing hard. 

“There you have now witnessed it nandaou.” 

“Y-Yeah….” you quickly turned away from him and began walking, Takao and Midorima looked at each other and had the same idea. Takao wrapped his arms around you tightly and picked you up. 

“Hey! Put me down what are you doing?” 

“You know, we haven’t kissed you like that? We always kiss your cheek we could al~”

“Not in public you don’t.” You said slightly horrified since there were a lot of people out.

“So mean (N/N)…” Takao said and you puffed.

“Put me down, I want our ice cream date.”

“Alright. Later we will…”

“Not in public…” Both males were quiet and you knew they were secretly plotting something so you grew suspicious. After finally arriving at the ice cream parlor you got (f/f) ice cream cone, and they got theirs. You three left and decided to head to the park since it was nice out. 

“You guys won’t ditch me to play basketball will you?” You noticed them looking at the basketball court.

“What? No, we have something plan…” Midorima said looking at you, before noticing you had ice cream on the corner of your lips. Takao noticed it too on his side and they shared a glance. You didn’t notice going to eat more of your ice cream, but Midorima gently grabbed your hand. 

“What’s wrong?” You asked but you suddenly felt two tongues lick the corner of your mouth before Takao kissed you on your lips. You let a small gasp out and he ended up using this chance to deepen it before parting. Midorima soon claimed your lips not giving you the option to complain. You felt your knees grow weak and when he parted they both were wearing similar smirks. You hid your face with your hair feeling embarrassed. 

“I-Idiots…”

“It’s only fair, we kiss each other like that, we want to kiss you like that…” 

“In public?”

“Now everyone knows you are ours, nandaou.”

“Gosh…” You didn’t know what else to say but you were smiling. Even though they did things like this you really do love those two idiots, one being more of an idiot then the other.

“I love you two.”

“We love you too and we are never letting you go.” Takao said and Midorima nodded his head. 

“Good, because you both are stuck with me. So don’t even think about trying to leave,” you tossed your paper that held the cone before grabbing both boys hands. You gave them each a kiss on the lips and smiled widely. 

“We should go back so we can cuddle.” You suggested and both boys nodded.

“Are your parents home?” Midorima asked and you shook your head.

“Just us, we can watch a movie and cuddle and eat more ice cream.”

“Seems good with me, you Shin~chan?”

“I have nothing else to do…”

“You mean nothing else better to do because we are the best things to you.” You told him and Takao nodded in agreement.

“Yeah sure…” 

“Such a tsundere.”

“I am not.”

“Yes you are. That’s why we love you…” You said and Midorima huffed slightly.
