Day 11: Cape Town, South Africa
I decided to forego the hostel’s breakfast (it’s a fine place, but perhaps not the most social, as they don’t seem to organize events) and head to a nearby park for a quick morning workout.
The park was The Company’s Garden, which is a spot I wanted to check out anyway, so, 2 parrots with one coconut, as they say (no one says this). I strolled the nicely manicured and very tropical garden. I also went to a cafe to get a bagel sandwich. I asked for avocado on a bagel. They said they had no avocado, so I jumped out of line for a moment to make a decision, which was a mistake (this cafe was attached to the natural history museum, so there were tons of kids here on a Saturday morning). This took forever, then when I got back to the front of the line, the lady told me they don’t have any bagels. If you note above, I ordered a bagel sandwich with avocado, and she only told me there was no avocado (she made no mention of the no bagel, which could have saved me a pile of time). I’m belaboring the point here to demonstrate the differences in customer service versus what I’m used to. Things are inefficient, and the staff are often indifferent and unapologetic. Obviously this wouldn’t fly in NY, as the business would be run out of town.
ANYWAY RANT OVER THANKS FOR LISTENING
I sauntered the gardens a bit more, admiring the vegetation and noting one part reminded me of Poet’s Walk in Central Park. I ended up at a lovely cafe with entirely too many employees (a big theme in Africa). Realizing I was very close to the Castle of Good Hope, I decided to give it a quick gander. Not a whole heck of a lot to see here, but I spent an hour exploring, including the cannon mounts overlooking the city (pics), which was cool. I gleaned a tiny bit of history too.
I went back to the hostel to repack my bag for a hike up Lion’s Head. After an Uber to the base, I started the ascent. The views, even from the beginning of the trail, were sweeping (again, pics!)
The hike started steep, then it got rocky and somewhat treacherous. It has rained this morning, so some rocks were still wet, and you needed to use ladders, staples and chains. I went up somewhat aggressively (all the while proud of myself of my surefooted decision making), so it took me just under an hour. There were certainly some folks who did not belong on the mountain, and many that were wearing stifling cologne, Gucci bags and “fashion” sneakers. Needless to say, I hated these people.
At the top, I took countless selfies and just admired the glistening city below. The surroundings are really unique, and I’m worried that it will ruin other hikes for me in the future (like how La Sagrada Familia has ruined cathedrals for me).
I was at the summit for 45 minutes, debating whether to stay for sunset, but opting to go down with the light (safety, warmth). The walk down was rough on my knees and required some agility, but it really was quite a wonderful afternoon hike.
When I got home, I was tired from all the walking, hiking, but went out on nearby Kloof Street for a few drinks, a bit of exploring and a bite before calling it a night.

I’m too busy overthinking the third volume of GOTG but I had to get this out of my system. Everyone danced at the end of V3.. besides Quill. The last time he truly danced was with Gamora which brings me to the song Careless Whisperer more importantly; the bridge.
“So, I’m never going to dance again. The way I danced with you.”
The amount of Starmora edits I’ve seen with this song is completely overwhelming at times but I literally had to get this out of my system because I wanted to talk about how important it is and how out of character Quill seems to be in V3. He gets his emotions out via dancing, he’s first introduced with dancing. Yet, Quill’s final appearance doesn’t feature dancing it shows him stepping into a new step of life and everyone stayed back (Heck, even Drax danced). We’re talking about the same man who saved the world temporarily by doing hip thrusts. It’s just.. the little things that have changed about Quill throughout the time without Gamora.
Without physically dancing to music we’re met with him sulking to music. Instead of using music as a connection to his mother, he’s using the music to feed into his emotions. He moved on from his immaturity throughout all three vols + the avengers movies they were featured in. His sulking made him change inside and out and while I would love to rant about how they should’ve focused more on his loss of Gamora. This tiny detail has set me back completely. He even goes as far to give his zune to Rocket which was something he got from a loved one who also died in his arms. He completely forgot about what he used music for and I’m shocked no one has talked about this sooner.

Saw a Headcanon about the music choice for vol. 3 being Kraglin’s and honestly it would make so much sense. Especially, since there’s an Alice Cooper song in there and in the vol. 2 scene he mentions her. It honestly is such a heartwarming Headcanon to me.

Continuing to ask myself (Especially after watching IW again), what would’ve happened to Peter if he was able to actually kill Gamora in that moment? Like.. would Thanos do anything? It’s just been a running question in my mind.
I also think about when Gamora first asked him, I don’t know what was going through my mind (A lot of people call me heartless) but what if he just killed her right there? I talk about this too often I could possibly be a murderer.

Wanted to touch more on this, I believe Vol. 1 and 2 both show the dancing I speak of.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 1 opening up on Peter Quill dancing to Come and Get Your Love. This title card was not only opened with music from the scene with Quill’s mother dying (Quill is listening to the Walkman before pulled into her room) but is brought into another scene of Quill dancing to the same music from the same Walkman 24 years later. We’re shown to the immaturity and bubbly attitude of Quill immediately which seems to follow him into his adult years even after losing his mother and shows that music is a big factor of Quill’s character. On top of that Groot dies in this volume, he’s shown in the after credits scene to be brought back to life and has to go through the stages of growing again meaning I can move us forward towards Vol. 2
Instead of Quill dancing this time we’re shown with baby Groot dancing to Mr. Blue Sky. It’s because of the father like behavior Quill shows in this volume and it’s not to be brushed over. In this volume we not only get the motherly instincts of Gamora, but the fatherly love that Quill is able to offer. He just killed his own father after realizing he was the real reason of his mother’s death- not only that but Quill had shown growth towards the fact his mothers love and family that he has with the Guardians was worth more than celestial powers. There’s visible growth in this film, let alone the ending song with Groot and Quill is Father and Son.
During this there is a canon four year gap to Infinity war we’re brought to them still acting like a family and singing along to Quill’s taste in music on the Zune. Gamora and Quill show more of a co-leadership and their relationship is officially canon, (For only about 45 minutes and that’s when all the Starmora fans cried out.) Quill still has slight immaturity based on how he acts towards Thor’s appearance and the way he sees him talking to Gamora sparks jealousy and even when Gamora is taken by her abuser, he blames himself for the whole situation.
“I told you to go right.”
Quill is seen to go through the same kind of self-blame when he finds out Gamora was indeed killed later on in that film. He lets his own heart drive into his actions of not letting them get the gauntlet off, because he found out the same person that abused her had killed her. It prompted the line.
“This isn’t love.” Because it isn’t. Quill’s love is true love, Thanos love WASNT real. It was there in order to get power.
This is also the last film we have with Quill listening to music, singing along and having his whole space family in his life. He starts to spiral after meeting the 2014 Gamora and finding out she has no clue who he is. This is where we watch Quill spiral from his usual light-hearted self. He goes from staring at images of her to explaining how to cover the feelings of being numb to him being carried by Nebula in the start of the third volume. Which brings me to the contrast I’ve been trying to point out this whole time.
The character that was built on dancing and goofiness was so emotionally damaged he never danced again.
His own habits in the start of the first volume move onto Groot who dances in his place. Which makes sense, Quill is his father figure after all.
To watching Quill be carried and fall into an addiction of alcoholism because of losing everybody he loved and causing despair throughout his life. What we see in the volumes isn’t just despair though, it’s maturity and growth. He goes from wanting to be this legendary outlaw to just wanting to settle down and find out what his genetic family actually was when he was abducted and missing for 30+ years.
