WI vs IND 2022 - West Indies ODIs a chance for India's bench to prove its strength
WI vs IND 2022 – West Indies ODIs a chance for India’s bench to prove its strength
Two days after India won the ODI series in England on Sunday, several members of that squad have travelled across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean for another 50-over contest beginning this Friday. But there’s no Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah – all of whom have been rested – while KL Rahul is still on the road to recovery after his hernia…

Why Kohli was a villain for these 4 players
Tumblr media
For many Indian players, Virat Kohli has proven to be a villain. If these players had the support of 'King Kohli', they may have achieved even greater heights in their careers. Kohli was named Test captain in the year 2014. After a few years, he was also named limited-overs captain. His leadership created many excellent diamonds, but many talented players were overlooked.
Why Kohli was a villain for these 4 players
Many star players like Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya reached new heights under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. On the other hand, some players did not receive much support from 'King Kohli', which caused some careers to end and some to make their debut very late, although some didn't lose hope and kept working hard. Here are 4 such players.
Ambati Rayudu
Tumblr media
Rayudu is among the players whose talent was not recognized enough. Before the World Cup 2019, he was touted as the fourth number contender in the batting order, but Vijay Shankar was selected instead. Vijay Shankar and Shikhar Dhawan were injured during this ICC tournament, but Rayudu was not given a chance. Rayudu was disappointed and retired from international cricket. Rayudu's career wouldn't have ended so soon if Virat Kohli had supported him.
Karun Nair
Tumblr media
Karun Nair is the second Indian to have scored a triple century in Test cricket after Virender Sehwag. He achieved this in the third Test against England in 2016. Afterward, he played four innings against Australia before not playing at the international level again. Virat Kohli's ruthless decision to not give such a talented player another chance is considered one of the worst decisions he has ever made.
Hanuma Vihari
Tumblr media
Hanuma Vihari, the Indian Test specialist, got fewer opportunities under Virat Kohli's captaincy. He was not selected for the red ball series against New Zealand in December 2021, and Shreyas Iyer took his place. He played the match against South Africa in Johannesburg without Kohli. Vihari has played only one Test so far, after a restrained inning in Sydney last year.
Suryakumar Yadav
Tumblr media
With Virat Kohli as captain of the Indian cricket team, Suryakumar Yadav was constantly overlooked for international cricket, despite his brilliant performances in the IPL. He was given a one-day cap for the first time last year. Debut in the T20 International. It is expected that his career will reach unimaginable heights shortly.
Ravichandran Ashwin
Virat Kohli became the all-format captain in 2017 and subsequently sidelined Ravichandran Ashwin from limited-overs cricket. Often, he was given unnecessary rest so that he could be ready for the test. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were given a chance in his place, who froze in the team. Ashwin was not selected for the World Cup. In the T20 World Cup last year, when Washington Sundar was injured, he returned suddenly. As Ashwin has also returned to the ODI team, it is expected that he will also be seen at the World Cup in 2023. ‘Pleasure Playing Under You’: Jasprit Bumrah on Virat Kohli Bumrah made his Test debut in South Africa in 2018 under Virat Kohli. In his very first series, he took 14 wickets and showed his skills with the ball by making an impact on the series. Now, four years later, he is India's top pacer across formats. He finished with 12 wickets from three matches, including a wicket in the first innings of the Cape Town Test, which India lost by seven wickets. In the ODI series against South Africa, Bumrah has been named vice-captain. The first two games (January 19, 21) will be played in Paarl, while the third game (and final) will be played in Cape Town. KL Rahul likely to get rest from ODI series against England
India’s experienced batsman Lokesh Rahul is likely to be rested from the white-ball series against England starting January 22 in Kolkata. The England team will play a five-match T20 International and three ODI series on this tour of India. Rahul, however, will be available for selection for the Champions Trophy starting on February 19. Fears of England and Australia players -- currently involved in an ODI series in England -- being held up by quarantine rules in the UAE were somewhat put to rest by Kolkata Knight Riders boss Venky Mysore who said last week that those players will be available for selection for their teams' opening matches. IPL 2020: FULL LEAGUE-STAGE SCHEDULE Mysore said that there would be no need for them to undergo quarantine, considering the players are travelling from one bio-secure bubble to another. Upbeat India hits the ground running in New Zealand

Upbeat India hits the ground running in New Zealand
Preparations for the World Cup on top of their agenda, India will take on an injury-hit New Zealand in a rare five-match T20 International series starting Friday during which seam-friendly wickets would be a major challenge for the visitors.
Unlike most overseas tours, this will be a quick start for the Indian team. In a tight season, the first T20 comes only five days after their last ODI against Australia at home.
The team arrived in Auckland on Tuesday and chose to rest on Wednesday. Thursday was when they hit the nets ahead of the tour-opening game.
On the plus side, this hectic schedule helps the team management maintain consistency in team selection as they continue experimenting across the available squad in a World Cup year. The T20 showpiece is scheduled to be held in Australia in October this year.
Despite injury issues to key white-ball personnel like Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya, Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar this past home season, the bench strength has come across adequate and raring to go for challenges ahead.
It begins at the top where KL Rahul has stepped up as a key part of India’s white-ball plans.
He did enough against the West Indies as Shikhar Dhawan’s replacement to merit a starting spot, and then formed a solid pairing when Dhawan returned while Rohit Sharma was rested. And now, India will once again start this T20 series with Rohit and Rahul pairing up at the top.
Skipper Virat Kohli dropped hints that Rahul’s newfound confidence in his dual role as batsman-keeper has given vital options to the team.
According to Kohli, Rahul will continue to keep wickets in both ODIs and T20Is, but will open in the shortest format while returning to the middle-order in the 50-over format.
It could mean that Prithvi Shaw is being primed for an ODI debut and a potential pairing with Rohit when the three-match series begins on February 5.
The skipper also indicated a change in middle order plans. With Rahul keeping wickets, the fit-again Rishabh Pant could lose his spot in the playing eleven.
Manish Pandey is expected to play as the fifth specialist batsman and Shreyas Iyer will regain his spot at number four.
Pandey, Iyer and Pant batted together in the nets on Thursday, while Sanju Samson hung around, only to pad up later on. The Kerala batsman didn’t seem to be in contention for the first T20I.
Pant and Pandey could both fit into the playing eleven should India opt for five bowlers and leave out the sixth option in Shivam Dube. Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja are the other two all-round options.
The Yuzvendra Chahal-Kuldeep Yadav combination is yet to play a game together since the 2019 ODI World Cup, and it remains to be seen if things will change in this aspect.
In the pace department, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah are assured starters, while the toss-up will be between Shardul Thakur and Navdeep Saini.
New Zealand had beaten India 2-1 in the T20I series last year. The Black Caps also won 2-1 in the T20I series during their Sri Lankan tour, and then drew 2-2 at home against England in a five-match series.
Despite the recent good record in the shortest format, there is a downbeat mood in the hosts’ dressing room thanks to the 3-0 shellacking received in Australia over the past month.
It hasn’t helped matters that the disappointing loss to their trans-Tasman rivals has raised questions about Kane Williamson’s future as captain.
For the moment, New Zealand’s leading batsman is happy to lead the side across all formats, but his position is up for review after the shattering defeat to Australia.
As always, they have a dearth of all-rounders to choose from but need to balance with pickings in the pace department, which is missing the services of Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson owing to injuries.
It remains to be seen if the Black Caps opt for two spinners in Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner given the really short boundaries at Eden Park, venue for the first two T20Is.
Teams (from):
India: Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul (wk), Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Navdeep Saini, Washington Sundar.
New Zealand: Kane Williamson (capt), Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor, Scott Kuggeleijn, Colin Munro, Colin de Grandhomme, Tom Bruce, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert (wk), Hamish Bennett, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Blair Tickner.
Match starts on January 24 at 12.20 p.m. IST.

via Today Bharat nbsp; Rohit, Vijay and Parthiv included in Australia tour Test team; Kedar Jadhav returns for last two Windies ODIsThe selection committee meeting was delayed for more than two hours due to the convenor mdash; acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary mdash; being stuck in traffic while driving down from Mumbai. By the time he arrived, India-A coach Rahul Dravid had left. In came Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to join the five selectors and six different squads were finalised here on Friday. Besides Kedar Jadhav's addition to India's ODI squad for the fourth and fifth matches against the West Indies, here are the salient features from the selections: Kohli rested for Windies T20s: Rohit Sharma will lead India in white-ball cricket for the third series in 2018, with captain Virat Kohli having been rested for the three-match T20 series. Perhaps it's his sore back or perhaps the selectors and the management want to be extra-cautious considering the important challenges ahead. Chief selector M.S.K. Prasad cited ldquo;workload managementrdquo; as the reason. Dhonirsquo;s omission: India is set to play six T20s in November and Mahendra Singh Dhoni will not be part of the change-room for either the three T20s versus Windies or the following T20s in Australia. The reason: according to Prasad, the selectors want to try out Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant as a wicketkeeping options. Dhoni's omission is perhaps the first clear indication that the veteran 'keeper-batsman is indeed at the fag end of his international career. Rohit, Vijay, Parthiv back: Opener M. Vijay, white-ball vice-captain Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel have been recalled for the four-Test series in Australia. Prasad said Vijay, after being dropped mid-way through the Test series in England, has shown ldquo;intent by scoring runs in county cricketrdquo;, whereas Rohit will come in handy considering ldquo;his back-foot play suits the bouncy pitchesrdquo; down under. As for Parthiv, who had been given the cold shoulder since the series in South Africa, Prasad said his ldquo;experiencerdquo; and ldquo;ability to double-up as openerrdquo; went in his favour. Hardik Pandya update: Ever since breaking down during the Asia Cup, Hardik Pandya has been out of action. He now features in only the India-A one-day squad for the three-match series in New Zealand. That too, Prasad clarified, provided he proves his fitness in the Ranji Trophy. While Pandya is unlikely to feature in the first half of the Australia series, Prasad said the selectors hoped ldquo;Bhuvi will stand uprdquo; and make himself count as a pace-bowling all-rounder. Test specialists for NZ-A warm-up: Six members of the Test squad mdash; Vijay, Prithvi Shaw, Hanuma Vihari, Rohit, Ajinkya Rahane and Patel mdash; will fly to New Zealand and play a four-day match for India-A against New Zealand-A from November 16 to 19 before joining the Test specialists in Australia. It would mean Rohit will join the squad in Australia on the eve of the first T20. Karun Nair, who served drinks in England, has been excluded from the Test squad and will replace Rahane as captain for the last two A games in New Zealand. Maiden call-up for Nadeem: After toiling in domestic cricket for a long time, left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem finally received a call-up, selected for the three T20s versus West Indies. Considering his record in domestic cricket and his recent form, having registered the best figures in List-A cricket ever in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Nadeem will have every reason to think ldquo;better late than neverrdquo;. Team for three T20I match series against West Indies: Rohit Sharma (C), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Krunal Pandya, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Khaleel Ahmed, Umesh Yadav, Shahbaz Nadeem. Team for four-match Test series against Australia: Virat Kohli (C), M Vijay, KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Parthiv Patel, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ishant, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Team for three-match T20I series against Australia: Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma (vc), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Dinesh Karthik, Rishabh Pant (wk), Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed. India A team for first four-day game against New Zealand A: Ajinkya Rahane (C), M Vijay, Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari, Rohit Sharma, Parthiv Patel (wk), K Gowtham, Shahbaz Nadeem, Md Siraj, Navdeep Saini, Deepak Chahar, R Gurbani, Vijay Shankar, KS Bharath. nbsp;

Asia Cup 2018: Virat Kohli Rested, Rohit Sharma To Lead India
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday announced the 16-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup scheduled to start from September 15 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Skipper Virat Kohli has been rested for the tournament with Rohit Sharma named captain in his absence. Shikhar Dhawan was appointed the vice-captain of the Indian team. Meanwhile, Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav returned to the India ODI set up while 20-year-old Khaleel Ahmed was included in the squad to bolster the pace department.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is yet to play a single match in the ongoing Test series in England, was also included in the squad.
“Considering the workload, we have given Virat Kohli a rest. He has been playing continuously for quite some time. We need to preserve some of our precious players who are playing all three formats. Looking at that workload we have started with Virat and he will be rested for Asia Cup,” MSK Prasad, BCCI Chief selector was quoted as saying by ANI.
“There are two, three slots we are yet to see before we fix the final team for the World Cup and one of the slots is a seamer slot which is available. We are looking at a left-hander option in Khaleel Ahmed,” he added.
India squad for Asia Cup 2018: Rohit Sharma (C), Shikhar Dhawan (VC), KL Rahul, Ambati Rayudu, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Y Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Khaleel Ahmed.

India’s 2-0 win over Ireland didn’t really resemble an international T20 series. For the hosts, it was a lesson. For the neutral, it was a gross mismatch. For the Indian fans living in Dublin, it was a chance to catch their heroes in action, up close and personal. For the Men in Blue though, it was like any other warm-up routine before an important overseas tour wherein they didn’t even hit the third gear.
Making the short leap over the Irish Sea to Manchester, the mood ought to change in the Indian dressing room and they need to ponder over a few points. For, England are a completely different beast, particularly in limited-overs’ cricket at the moment
1. Jasprit Bumrah’s injury exposes vital flaw
Over the past year or so, India have used only five pacers in limited-overs’ cricket. Two of them, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah played 26 out of 32 ODIs together. They also shared the new ball in 9 out of 18 T20Is. Statistics for the other pacers don’t measure up, though.
Among India’s current second choice pacers, Umesh Yadav last played ODI cricket in September 2017. When he featured in the second T20I against Ireland, it was only his second international T20 game since 2012.
Meanwhile, Siddarth Kaul waited since December for his maiden game. The underlying point herein is about the lack of game time for the second line of attack.
Bumrah is a limited-overs’ specialist and he will be sorely missed. But replacing him has suddenly become a bigger task given the lack of recent match experience of those replacing him. At least it didn’t happen just before the 2019 World Cup, for that would have been a complete disaster
2. Nobody wants to bat in the middle order
One key advantage of the two-match series against Ireland was the time Indian batsmen were able to spend in the middle. Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Suresh Raina, all got half-centuries during the two innings. The problem is that they are all top-order batsmen.
For the moment, the team management doesn’t want to shuffle Rahul into the middle order. Similarly, Raina is slated to bat at No.3, as he has done for most of the T20Is played this year. In the second T20I, Rohit was moved down to no.4 but he failed to score a single run, making sure there was no debate about this move at all. It is almost as if no one wants to bat in the middle order, and this continues to be an evolving issue for the Indian team.
3. Virat Kohli needs big runs from the very beginning
The Indian skipper has only one blot on his otherwise already-illustrious career. The tour of 2014 where he failed to get going at almost every opportunity stands out in terms of struggle for a sub-continental batsman in alien overseas conditions. Kohli wanted to make up lost time and opted for a County stint, only for it to be cancelled at the last moment owing to a neck injury. He is all fit now, but the continuity of form has been broken. After a few weeks’ rest he has started off again, albeit not in the best manner.
In Ireland, against arguably one of the easiest attacks he will ever face in international cricket, Kohli managed 9 runs off 10 balls across two innings inclusive of a two-ball duck in the first T20I. It isn’t the way he would have liked to kick-start his second UK tour, but all is not lost just yet. There is a long way to go on this trip, and the limited overs’ leg in England is an apt opportunity. White ball, batsmen friendly wickets and no James Anderson, this should be a cakewalk for Kohli.
Only thing, he does really need to get big runs in the T20Is as well as the ODIs otherwise the English media (not to mention their Indian colleagues) will be all over him like a rash.
4. England’s batting might
Stretching back to June last year, India have kept coming up against opposition with deep batting problems. West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa have all had their fair share of unresolved issues, and weren’t able to cope with pace, wrist spin, conditions or a combination of all those factors. Perhaps, only the Black Caps gave them any semblance of a contest, albeit thanks to their spinners reading Indian conditions well.
England though are a different adversary. They pack a serious punch when it comes to batting in the limited-overs’ formats, especially at home wherein pitches are now rolled out to suit batsmen, a departure from tradition.
Led by the adventurous Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales have regaled crowds everywhere they have played in recent times. And then there is Jos Buttler.
He is a familiar face to most Indian bowlers, after scoring 548 runs in 13 matches at strike-rate 155.24 for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2018 IPL. As a result, he was moved to open against Australia in the one-off T20 recently and he duly smacked England’s quickest-ever T20I half-century off 22 balls. Needless to say, he will be India’s greatest threat in a batting order that is bursting with aggression.

#582 PV Sindhu beats Marin in a thriller to reach Malaysian open SF; Srikanth cruises to SF ; Mina gives Columbia much needed win over Senegal; Japan move to 2nd round though they lose to Poland on the basis that they had lesser yellow cards than Senegal; Federer, Cilic and Djokovic has easier draw in Wimbledon; Nadal and Murray has a relatively tough draw; KL Rahul and spinners humiliate Ireland in one sided contest and more...:-)
Tumblr media
Goals by Paulinho and Thiago Silva gave Brazil comfortable 2-0 win over Serbia. Samba team look in great form and would face Mexico in 2nd round. Swiss tied with Costa Rica 2-2 and booked 2nd slot from the group. They would face Sweden in 2nd round. In final day of league matches, Japan faced Poland and lost it 0-1. They had to pray that Columbia beat Senegal and they did. Mina’s goal in 74th minute pushed Columbia to top of the group. Senegal tied with Japan on points and goal difference. Japan qualified on the basis that they had lesser yellow cards than Senegal. That is as close as it gets. Heartbreak for Senegal.  Belgium beat England 1-0 in final match of the day. Both teams fielded 2nd leg teams resting key players as both had qualified. Januzaj’s winner was a stunner though. Belgium would face Japan in 2nd round. England face Columbia. France plays Argentina in first 2nd round match on 30-Jun.
In Malaysian open, PV Sindhu beat Caroline Marin 22-20 21-19 in a thriller of a match. It was as close as it gets. Marin was not fully fit though. Sindhu storms into SF where she will face world number 1 Tai Tzu Ying. Srikanth Kidambi outclassed Leverdez 21-19 21-11 to reach SF where he would face Kento Momoto of Japan.
Wimbledon draw is out. Number 1 seeded Federer faces Lajovic in first round. He could potentally meet Karlovic in 3rd round, Coric in 4th round and Anderson/Querrey  in QF. He could face Cilic in SF. Cilic has easy draw. He would not be tested till 4th round where he could meet Raonic. Dimitrov starts campaign against Wawrinka which is a tough one. In bottom half of the draw, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic were the key players. Nadal could face Fognini in 4th round and could face Delpotro or Murray in QF and Djokovic in SF. Murray starts campaign against Paire . He could face Shapovalov in 2nd round and Delpotro in 3rd round. Djokovic has an easier route. He could potentially meet Thiem in 4th round and Kyrgios in QF.
In 2nd T20 vs Ireland, India won handsomely again. Quick fifties by Rahul and Raina and late slogging by Pandya gave India a huge 213-4. Kuldeep and Chahal grabbed 3 wickets each as Ireland get bundled just for 70. They didn’t cross score of KL Rahul. They just lasted 75 balls. Chahal and Kuldeep have grabbed 13 of 20 wickets in this series. They would be critical in England ODI series too.

After a brilliant performance in IPL 2018, KL Rahul got another chance in limited over cricket and Ajinkya Rahane’s omission from the ODI squad means that he is once again a contender for the number four spot when the three-match series against England begins on July 12.
Virat Kohli’s concern: The middle order
With Rahul in contention for a starting spot in the middle order, Manish Pandey, Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik will be left jostling for two spots. KL Rahul back, Dinesh Karthik out for ODIs against Australia
MUMBAI: Even as they recalled opener KL Rahul and picked rookie leg-spinner Mayank Markande as the new face, the selectors on Friday made it clear that they were still unsure about the second wicketkeepers’ slot when they dropped Dinesh Karthik in favour of Rishabh Pant while naming the Indian team for the ODI and T20 home series against Australia. Karthik though was retained in the T20 squad.
Starting February 24, India will play two T20 Internationals and five ODIs against the Aussies, in what will be their last international assignment before the World Cup, which begins in England on May 30.
Returning from suspension after being involved in a controversial interview on ‘Koffee with Karan,’ Rahul hit back-to-back fifties for India A against the England Lions in the two unofficial Tests recently. The Karnataka opener was in poor form during the Test series in Australia, but has enjoyed the confidence of the team management as a reserve opener.
The 21-year-old Markande was immediately rewarded after his five-wicket haul powered India A to an innings and 68-run victory over England Lions in the second unofficial test in Mysuru. The Punjab leggie had impressed for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL last summer, taking 15 wickets in 14 [email protected] (economy rate: 8.36), and was touted as the find of the season.
“We are looking at him (Markande) as a back-up spinner. So, we’ve been grooming him through the India ‘A’ process and he has taken a five-wicket haul (against England Lions on Friday),” said chief selector MSK Prasad.
Karthik played in only the final two ODIs of the five-match series in New Zealand last month, in which he managed scores of 38 not out and 0. Clearly, the selectors and the team management are keen on giving Pant one last shot to book his ticket to England as a specialist-batsman-cum-second-wicketkeeper for the World Cup. In this context, this axing comes as a massive jolt to the Tamil Nadu player’s prospects of boarding the Heathrow-bound flight – a surprise considering that he’s performed consistently in the chances that he’s got.
Prasad agreed that his colleagues were sort of ‘auditioning’ Pant and Karthik, to see who fits the bill the best for the World Cup. “Definitely, because prior to this, we had two series in New Zealand and Australia, where Karthik was chosen. Because Rishabh played four Tests in Australia, we wanted him to get a good break. After a 20-day break, he played couple of One-dayers against the England Lions, where he did well, then we sent him to T20 matches. We want to give him a few ODIs before taking a final call,” Prasad said.
Pant as opener?
Prasad also hinted that Pant could be tried out as an opener in the forthcoming series. “We have included him considering many factors. We will try and figure out his best possible batting position, because being a left-hander, there is an advantage of playing left-right combination (at the top). We are discussing all that,” he said.
In other significant decisions, the selectors have recalled pacer Umesh Yadav, who took 23 wickets (including three five-wicket hauls) in the Ranji Trophy knockouts to spearhead Vidarbha to their second crown in two years, in the T20 squad. He missed out on selection in ODIs though. By including Vijay Shankar over Ravindra Jadeja, they have also given a clear indication as to who is ahead in the race for the second all-rounder’s slot. “Shankar’s performance in the recent series changed a bit of dynamics and he brings that dual impact to the side, which is why we have included him,” said Prasad.
Yadav has come in at the expense of Khaleel Ahmed. The left-arm seamer was dropped from both the formats after going for 122 runs in the 12 overs that he bowled during the T20I series in New Zealand. Considering that the 21-yearold played eight ODIs and 9 T20Is since making his debut against Hong Kong in the Asia Cup, it can be assumed that the investment on the seamer is in danger of being nullified.
The pace attack includes Jasprit Bumrah, refreshed after a break, and Mohammed Shami, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been rested from the T20I series and the first two ODIs. In his absence, Punjab’s Sidharth Kaul will fill in as a fast-bowling alternative – a debatable decision. After choosing to skip a few games in New Zealand, skipper Virat Kohli has returned to the team for both the formats.
In the case of the T20I side, Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav has been rested like Bhuvneshwar considering the bowlers’ workload, but all-rounder Krunal Pandya, who leaked 131 runs in 12 overs in three games (ER: 9.91), has survived the axe.
