1. Have they ever hurt anyone before (intentionally or not) and if yes, how do they feel about it? Thyra: She most definitely has! As the eldest of seven, she has had her moments where she knocked some sense into her siblings, on purpose and not. She never regrets doing it because she justifies it by saying they deserved it. Let’s not forget, she’s also a shield maiden, one out of very few, so she had her dealings with murder while going on raids. She tries her best with not killing, but sometimes it has to happen and she won’t let herself cry about it. She is a viking after all and this is what they do.

Gungir: He has trampled into a few people on accident more than a few times and because of his great height the damage was sizable. He’s pretty clumsy for a viking… For small things such as these, he feels very sorry over. He will apologize profusely and won’t stop until he knows they’re okay. Once again, he is also a viking so he had gone on many raids himself. He has killed more than a few people, though only ones who had raised their sword against him. He has no need to go after innocent bystanders. He doesn’t feel sorry for the people who he fought against, they entered the battle and lost, this is the price to pay.

Raud: Poor Raud, he has hurt many people for many reasons that are too spoilery to say. He does not let himself justify the killings and wallows in sadness and anger most of the time, a punishment he gives his sinful self.

Anne: No murder here, though she has stepped on a few cat paws and felt very deep anguish over it. The poor kitty couldn’t leave until she spoiled it rotten with fish and pets for days on end.

???: As I said, red flag. As a child he did do some ant killing and felt giddy when he saw their squished bodies. One thing though, he never murdered anyone himself he only [REDACTED]. :)

2. Did they break anyone's heart before? (intentionally or not) and if yes, also how do they feel about it.

Thyra: She has. There were many boys who tried to court her in her youth, but she never liked any of them. She’s a tough one to catch and when she sees a trait she doesn’t like, she will drop you. When she thinks back to the days she flat out rejected the boys, she can’t help but smile a smile of humor.

Gungir: He had a long relationship with one woman in his younger days, but she ended up leaving when she understood he couldn’t give her what she wanted. For many winters after that, he stayed depressed, but soon forgot his sadness and now looks back with a bitter happiness at the fun times they shared together.

Raud: No broken hearts from him. He doesn’t socialize with most and once again spoilers.

Anne: She has also broken many hearts, though not necessarily broken because the fool who tried to court her didn’t expect to fight so hard on this matter. She was young, he wasn’t. There was no way she was getting married to someone like him and she’s glad he gave up so easily.

???: Broken hearts all around. He sleeps with all the women and some want more, but they are fools if they do. He plays around with their affection for him, then kisses other women in front of them. How many times do I have to say this? He’s crazy!

3. Do they have any scars? And if yes, where and what caused them?

Thyra: She has a couple scars here and there, most prominent one is sat in the space between her neck and right shoulder from first time raiding, you could say it didn’t go well.

Gungir: Once again, viking, so he has scars on his torso, shoulders, thighs and hands. The one he likes to show off most is the one on his right hand. It’s big and still red. It was the scar that almost led to him losing his middle finger.

Raud: Scars everywhere. Spoilers on where and what they were from, but I can say whoever gave them to him deserve death.

Anne: No scars. She’s spotless except for the small cut on her pointer finger. She tried to cut some bread, but it didn’t go well…

???: He has a set of scars scattered on his thighs. He was a weird child with a knife and I mentioned he liked blood right?

Julian Alexander Dupree-Sanchez (born late ‘96) - He has a sharp tongue like Millie but has a big heart like Caroline. I haven’t thought deeper into it since me and @disneymbti just started talking about their octopulets but later, I’ll create distinct personalities and remake a post.

Miguel Ryan Dupree-Sanchez - He’s very kind, sometimes to the point where he’s oblivious when people are being mean. That doesn’t mean he’ll let people walk all over him though. He’s also gay and proud of it.

Beatriz “Bee Bee” Jody Dupree-Sanchez - Bee is very smart and intuitive. She’s very good at reading people and knows how to cheer people up. She loves bubblegum pop and the pop punk aesthetic. Her dream is to be a musician.

Mariana “Mary” Caroline Dupree-Sanchez - Mary comes off as a ditz but is actually super intelligent. She’s gets straight A’s and loves to exercise.

Reggie Hyde (early ‘96) - He tries to be tough like his dad but is really bad at it. He also pretty in touch with his feelings to the point where kids at school tease him for being gay (he's not). He's super smart but also has a bunch of conspiracy theories.

Lula "Lulu" Julia Mitchell (early '96) - She loves fiercely and is brave like her mom. Lulu loves candy to the point where she wants to make her own and sell it. Also, she's a lesbian who's into hyper feminine women.

Kira Amaya Kwan (late '98) - Kira is a calm and easygoing young woman with patience on her fingertips and a old soul spirit. She's really good at helping animals and making people feel comfortable around her. She loves rose scents perfumes and the smell of lavender and ocean. Her dream is to be a author.

Cleo Joy-Martelli (mid '99) - Cleo is a bold and confident young woman with a dreamy outlook of the world and has a charm with her in her bones. She's really good at giving hugs to people she loves the most and singing songs with her band. She loves the smell of smoke and lavender and playing her music out loud to people. Her dream is to be a world famous Broadway singer.

Anne-Marie Lauren Kelso (early '99) - She's a huge bookworm and loves to read, to the point her friends and siblings tease her (basically a Rory Gilmore). Every day, she comes to the library after school (present day, she works there). Oh yeah, Jonah is her Logan :)

Margot "Margie" Anne Kelso (early '99) - She's very quick witted and uses a lot of dry humor, similar to Red. But does have a good heart. Her dream is to be an artist and is currently taking art course as of present.

Elizabeth "Lizzie" Kristina Kelso (early ‘99) - She loves acting and majored in drama.

Arnold James Barnes (early ‘95) (based off of Jesse Kelso, @tht70sblog’s oc) in a way, except way less redeemable)- The school delinquent who got held back more than one can count. He was Anne-Marie’s boyfriend. He’s known to cause trouble and hurt people with no remorse. He was mostly raised by Ryland Barnes. His mom, Sophie, isn’t really in his life that much. Margie and Lizzie were against Anne-Marie dating him, mostly because he was 18 and she was still 15 at that point. After being sent to juvenile detention for theft, he dumped Anne-Marie via letter.

Julia Johnson (early-ish ‘99) - She’s very smart and suspicious. Kinda like the moral compass in a way. Julia is a creative and passionate young woman with a fierce heart and a bold fashion sense in her outfits. She's really good at designing outfits and not listening to people's mean words about her. She loves watching Aubrey Hepburn movies and the smell of perfume and vanilla in the air. Her dream is to be a fashion designer.

A Mementos exploration takes a turn for the worse. Ryuji can't muster up the strength to summon Captain Kidd, meanwhile Yusuke is barely standing up on his own, covered head to toe in burns and scratches. Akira gives the instructions for Ryuji to leave the battle, taking Yusuke with him, switching out with Makoto and Ann who are standing by. Except... Ryuji is no damn healer and this is the worst idea he's ever heard.

okay system fankid time:

Jessica-- Vito and Anne Maria's first kid, adopted 3 and a half years after all stars at birth. Jessi for short, she/her.

Dominic-- Vito and Anne Maria's second kid, adopted at birth about 2 years after Jessica. Starts using he/they pronouns when he's 7. Gets along really well with Mal. Answers to Nicky but doesn't really like it.

Xena-- Mike and Zoey's kid. 4ish years younger than Dominic, but hates not being included and does her best to do everything the older kids can do.

Sparrow-- Kitty's kid that Svetlana is helping raise. 6 months younger than Xena, was 2 and a half when they met. They/them. Occasionally abbreviated to Ro, mostly by Vito.

Tilly-- Scott and Manitoba's kid. A full 12 years younger than Jessi and 5 years younger than Sparrow. She/her pronouns until they're 3, and then they/them. Doesn't start talking until they're 6. Very energetic and adventurous, but shy. Has vitiligo.

Jessi and Dominic live primarily with Anne Maria, but spend most weekends at the system's house. Vito visits them as much as he can during the week and helps drive them around and stuff.

Mike and Zoey both wanted a kid but wanted to give them as stable a life as possible, so it kept getting pushed back. They have problems conceiving, and after Xena they decide that any more would be stretching everyone too thin. Zoey gets bottom surgery about 6 months after Xena's born.

Sparrow is Kitty's kid from a previous relationship that ended badly. They spend holidays with their dad and the rest of the time with Kitty. Kind of a sickly child. Svetlana is solidly in "mom's girlfriend" zone for a long time, and she understands and tries to be content with that, but is ecstatic when they start calling her their stepmom around junior high. They have a dark sense of humor and relish in the fact that they have a space away from their cousins. Gets diagnosed with a (TBD) chronic illness in high school and starts using crutches.

Scott wants kids, Manitoba doesn't, they compromise with some very babied dogs for years, but eventually Scott says that he's going to do what the rest of the system's partners are doing and have his own dang kid and Manitoba can help out as he pleases. That's the agreement until Tilly is actually born. Manitoba watches her for the first time and just about melts. They renegotiate and Scott moves into the city to be closer to Mani so they can co-parent better.

The Diary of A Young Girl- my review

Hi! Fair warning, this book took me MONTHS to finish. It was heavy at times, humorous somehow too, and heartbreaking. I loved it and here's why.

The Diary of A Young Girl is exactly what the title says. The girl in question just so happens to be in hiding in a country where being a Jew was one of the worst possible things that could happen to you. Her name was Anne Frank and she died before she turned 16. [In case you have never heard about this book, this is a non-fiction book that is quite literally her diary, that was discovered and published after she and her sister were taken to concentration camps.]

"Writing in a diary is a really strange experience for someone like me. Not only because I’ve never written anything before, but also because it seems to me that later on neither I nor anyone else will be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year old school girl. Oh well, it doesn’t matter. I feel like writing."

Roughly more than 30 million people read her musings. She wanted to be a writer, see her stories published. She never got to see her own life story published.

What I thought-

This book is in the form of diary entries, that this 13 year old Jew, Anne Frank, addresses to Kitty, her diary. When you think of The Holocaust or of the Jews' oppression, or at least I did before, I thought of these nameless, featureless figures who suffered unimaginable tragedies. But when you read this book, you see them as people. Real people who suffered unimaginable tragedies. People who were petty and frightened and loving and courageous. People who bickered and whined and cried and laughed. They had dreams and hopes and thoughts about what they would do when the war ended.

This book talks about a lot of heavy issues, but at the same time it tells us about petty fights and first love and crushes. It describes a girl growing up during the Holocaust. She survived so so much, and yet she died only weeks before the war ended. It makes you think about the people who were this close to surviving the war, surviving being a Jew.

"I've been taking valerian every day to fight the anxiety and depression, but it doesn't stop me from being even more miserable the next day. A good hearty laugh would help better than ten valerian drops, but we've almost forgotten how to laugh."

“I’ve asked myself again and again whether it wouldn’t have been better if we hadn’t gone into hiding; if we were dead now and didn’t have to go through this misery, especially so that the others could be spared the burden. But we all shrink from this thought. We still love life, we haven’t yet forgotten the voice of nature, and we keep hoping, hoping for...everything.”

“All we can do is wait, as calmly as possible, for it to end. Jews and Christians alike are waiting, the whole world is waiting, and many are waiting for death.”

I can tell you a lot about this book, but what I will say is that I feel like I know her. And I did, didn't I? I read her diary, her innermost thoughts, her only escape from the horrific reality they were in (a reality that they still made the best of). I grew to love her as a person and love her family through her eyes. Her sister and father and mother. But mostly her. I read as she struggled everyday, felt like no one understood her and continued to feel like that. I read as she quietly loved her family and recorded their birthdays and laughed over their tiny squabbles. (I mean the Secret Annex family too, not only her parents and sister.) She felt guilty for being the ones relatively safe in hiding and so worried for their helpers and all her friends who were not in hiding.

She was her worst critic and the most empathetic person ever. She was mature and understanding and far too old for her age. She got to be a person in hiding and someone in a concentration camp and a Jew but never just a teenager. If you were waiting for a time to start reading this book, this is your sign to start it now!

General note: I am slightly frustrated by a minor writing block in regard to fan fic WIPS. I am even more frustrated with a stalled original fic.

That said, I am about to do some blathering.

--Shen Jiu's adoptive father is based on conservative military sf writer David Weber. >_> My main beef with the guy is the way he does inclusivity! That is, he does "there are multiple people of various skin tones, but they are all essentially European/White." He also does "there are multiple religions but all of them are Christian. Yes, even the ones that are not in any way related to Christianity." I did initially like the books but the conservative bullshit across most of his writing soured me on his work.

--Shang Qinghua's family are also sf/fantasy fans. Both of his parents have been on convention committees and his mom hosts monthly filksings. Filksings are fun, though I am not social enough to attend.

--The reading habits of Shen Jiu and Shang Qinghua differ in that Shen Jiu has read more conservative writers, and more classic sf. I don't have a precise breakdown of who has read what.

Marion Zimmer Bradley (he feels guilty about it. The writer's personal life was a trashfire and she was abusive to her kids. Was one of the rare early sf/f writers who wrote mostly positive depictions of gay and lesbian characters.)

Octavia Butler (Wrote dystopias. Scary scary dystopias written really, really well.)

Elizabeth Moon (Mil SF, high fantasy. Possibly wrote the best paladin ever.

Martha Wells (High fantasy, urban (ish) fantasy. sf!)

what are your favorite heroines written by fitzgerald? and by thomas hardy? and by dickens? and by your other favorite authors? ♡

i cannot believe i’ve had this blog for 84 years and i've never done an official ranking of my girls! i limited myself to twenty characters (one per author), but if an author has more than one amazing heroine, i will be talking about all of them. so let’s start at the beginning, a very good place to start! 💗 

1.) estella havisham. my forever girl, my number one heroine when it comes to serious literature, and the blueprint for all my bitchy rich girl faves - of which there are many on this list. but no one compares to estella! you might be a spoiled brat, but have you been bent and broken into a better shape? 

2.) natasha rostova / kitty shcherbatsky. i think i would ultimately choose natasha if it ever came to that - she’s just a richer character, and one of the only major literary heroines who has a killer sense of humor - but kitty is my sweet pink marshmallow. it’s a very close call!

3.) cosette / eponine. again, i can’t choose. i think eponine is the more complex and sophisticated character, but cosette is so GOOD! she’s just loveable, which is a very hard quality to pin down. i love them both so much. 10/10 for each!

4.) eustacia vye, followed so closely by tess that the difference is infinitesimal. tess is the greater heroine (goodness made interesting - name a bigger challenge in literature!), but god, i fucking love eustacia. the chapter introducing her in return of the native is still the single best in-depth breakdown of a character’s personality that i have ever encountered in a novel.

5.) anne shirley, because she’s been with me my entire life and has taught me more about happiness than any other character i’ve ever come across. “the iron has entered into my soul, diana!”

6.) isabel archer. does she make poor decisions? yes. would she have been better off without the money? double yes! but the drama is what makes her shine. i know this book is dense, but read it anyway - because if you don’t, you’ll never meet isabel, and you will miss out on one of the richest experiences of your life. it’s not a light read, but it is my favorite read.

7.) emma bovary, my favorite mess. she’s mean and unrealistic and a little stupid, but that scene at the end where she just cracks open and all her anger comes spilling out is what makes her amazing. the french have a flair for tragedy (c'est dans le fucking titre in the case of les mis!), but nothing compares to the heartbreak of watching emma, who thinks that death will be like falling asleep, when she feels the arsenic start to work and realizes she was wrong: “oh! it is beginning!” it will not be an easy death. she is not an easy character. but mon dieu, i adore her! 

8.) catherine barkley. brett ashley is hemingway’s best female character, but catherine is the one who has my heart. she’s incredibly romantic and feminine and starry-eyed (with the most beautiful hair in all of literature!), but what makes her great is that this dreamy quality is a deliberately willed reaction to intense trauma. she CHOOSES to love. she is proof that you can be a girly girl and still be made of iron and steel. she’s so smart and courageous, and i am forever obsessed with her!

9.) sibyl vane, the girl who died for believing in fairy tales.

10.) tatyana larina rounds out my top ten for leaving onegin on read after he left her on read. the russians have the best heroines. i will not budge on this!

11.) yvonne de galais. she’s a ten (or in fournier-speak: “the fairy, the princess, the dream of love itself!”), but she can’t hold on to her man. 💔

12.) emma woodhouse. i’m not a huge austen fan, but i feel like out of all the girls on this list, emma would “get” me the most and go out of her way to befriend me. we are, unfortunately, very much alike.

13.) beatrice. do you know how much i suffered over choosing just one shakespeare heroine? an impossible task, but a girl who loves to laugh as much as bea does deserves to be number one. (it’s why the très witty rosalind is a close second, followed by the more tragically-inclined ophelia.)

14.) rosemary hoyt. this was the hardest one. i ultimately went with rosemary because she has all the qualities of the quintessential fitzgerald girl (young, fun, glamorous, spoiled, beautiful), but she’s much more likeable than rosalind, gloria, daisy, or even my beloved jordan. also in the top three are eleanor savage, who would be number one if she had her own book (“here am i with the brains to do everything - too bright for most men, and yet i have to descend to their level!”), and cecilia brady, hollywood princess extraordinaire and the west coast equivalent of nick carraway.

15.) amy march, america’s least favorite sister - and my personal favorite. this country has no taste. no wonder amy left!

16.) linda radlett. a little awful, but terribly funny and, in a weird way, kind of admirable in her single-minded ~pursuit of love. my mom wanted to watch the lily james version, thinking it would be a nice downton-esque period drama, and i had to tell her v. bluntly that there is nothing nice about the pursuit of love and that i couldn’t watch it with her because i knew she would hate linda. some things are just too sick-making!

17.) miss holiday golightly, travelling!

18.) lucy honeychurch. aside from being a genuinely cool girl who rejects the second-worst man in all of literature (the ultimate worst being angel clare), she also has the greatest name in the canon, which guarantees her a position in my top twenty.

19.) marguerite gautier, just because she’s actually marie duplessis and my love for marie is boundless and obsessively documented.

20.) franny glass. there aren’t many girls who possess the crazy level of self-confidence required to order a glass of milk in a restaurant while wearing a glam raccoon coat, but franny is one of the few. i related to her an embarrassing amount when i was a teenager, and while the association has faded, she remains my favorite glass sibling to this day.

Paints and Pumpkins

SUMMARY: It's Halloween night and Elain and Lucien are getting ready to hand out candies to hyped-up children. Only, Lucien is a little stubborn when it comes to his face paint and a little accident, while rather humorous, makes it worse.

"Lucien Vanserra," she cried, holding the paintbrush tightly in her hand. "If you move one more time I'll stop and you'll have a half-done face."

Elain had officially been trying to paint her fiancé's face for 45 minutes. It was Halloween, the artificial lamp light filling the room as she sat straddling his legs, eager to finish the skull face paint that matched his skeleton costume. He let out a sigh, smudging the black paint on his lips as he spoke, "I told you not to bother in the first place, kitty."

"Stop calling me that," she hissed, holding his jaw tightly with her other hand. "And you can't be a skeleton without the face to match so hold still."

Halloween wasn't her favourite holiday, not when there was Christmas and birthdays to celebrate, but since being with Lucien, she'd learned to love the spooky season. Their house was decked out properly in black and orange decorations: pumpkins, spiders, fake cobwebs and witch's cauldrons. They'd practically bought the whole Halloween section in Target. While Elain usually liked to dress up as a princess or mermaid (something overly feminine that made her older sister roll her eyes) she'd gone with a classic black cat this year—hence the nickname kitty which she already despised. She'd gotten the tight, black leather suit from Nesta, adding a tail and ears, and painting on the whiskers and nose. She'd gone for sexy, seeing as this was her first Halloween whilst engaged, but she'd ended up still looking rather innocent. Lucien hadn't seemed to mind though, had pressed a kiss to her hair and moved to slip into his costume for the evening.

"A skeleton is basic anyway, and I don't think kids care about face paint," he replied, remaining still despite his unimpressed tone.

With her sister heavy in her first pregnancy, the annual Halloween party that Feyre and her husband hosted had been cancelled. Elain had been more than happy to skip the night, but when Lucien had brought up his trick-or-treating idea, she couldn't say no. Not when they'd likely have tons of candy and chocolate leftover in the morning, plus she was excited to see all the children in their costumes. She was going to be an aunt soon after all.

"Of course they do, face paint is the coolest thing to them. They're going to love you, baby," she grinned, content in her work as she leaned back and added the finishing touches.

She'd painted his whole face white to match the bone colouring, adding black contour, blacked-out eyes and nose, and stitch-like marks across his lips and out slightly onto the cheeks. She grabbed two cans from her bag, one a black hair spray and the other dry shampoo. "Black or white hair?" she asked, setting the cans on the table behind them.

Lucien had already tied his long hair back into a tight bun. He settled his hands on her thighs, rubbing his large palms up them as he titled his head. "Black? It will hide my natural colour more."

She nodded in agreement, taking the hair spray and beginning to shake the can. She loved his red hair, the natural orange colour had been the first thing she'd noticed about him. She remembered wanting to run her fingers through it and considered herself lucky that she got to do it every day now.

"You know," she started, chest brushing his as she lent up close, holding one hand over his forehead so the spray wouldn't ruin the paint she'd just done. "You should have been a giant pumpkin for Halloween, you have the hair to match."

The house fell into silence, the subtle playing of a horror movie leaking from the front room being the only noise. She lent back slowly, looking down at her fiance who had raised his eyebrows and looked at her with such a grumpy face that she couldn't help but laugh. "What?" she giggled, beginning to spray the black into his hair.

He wrapped both arms around her waist, tugging her closer. "You think you're so funny, don't you?" he muttered, breath warm against her neck.

"I don't know what you mean," she grinned, happy he couldn't see the smug look on her face as she finished spraying, brushing some strands with her fingers and staining them black. "You'd make a very hot Jack-o'-lantern."

"That's it."

Before she could lean back and see what he'd meant by that, he'd stood up, her thighs slipping around his waist automatically as he lifted her. He simply turned before putting her back down, butt against the table as he pressed her gently against it. She dropped the spray from her hands with a small squeak as Lucien pressed his mouth to hers. She'd be more worried about the stain possibly on their floor if he hadn't brushed his warm tongue against her mouth, tasting the chocolate they had snacked on before getting ready.

"Lu," she muttered and wrapped her hands around his shoulders as he began to kiss down her neck. Her thigh wrapped around his back, feet rubbing his leg as he felt his way down to her hip. He had begun to unzip her suit, lips kissing the softness of her breasts when he looked up and laughter spilt uncontrollably from her.

His eyes went wide as he sat back, looking at her with utter confusion before he realised. She imagined her face somewhat matched his. Face paint was all good and well, that was until you smudged it. He slowly sat back completely, collapsing into the chair as she sat up, leaning on her palms. "I look ridiculous don't I?" he sighed, reaching for one of her hands.

"Afraid so, babe," Elain chuckled, giving him her hand, despite the black spray that was sure to transfer to his own hands. She now noticed the fingerprints she'd left along his neck and couldn't help but blush.

"All your hard work," he pouted, and she wanted nothing more than to squish his cheeks together. "We should wash this off before—"

The doorbell rang and the light laughter of kids flooded through the open porch window. She pressed her lips together, trying not to laugh and failing terribly. She slipped from the table, walking toward the front door and reaching for the pumpkin basket that held all their trick-or-treat snacks. "What are you doing?" Lucien whispered, coming up behind her.

"Our first trick-or-treaters of the night require their candy, dummy," she whispered back, reaching for the handle.

He pressed a palm against the door frame and circled the other around his face in question. She only smirked, leaning up close to brush a chaste kiss to his lips. "I thought kids didn't care about face paint," she replied with a wink, repeating the words he had said to her only moments ago.

After rolling his eyes, he stepped away with slight reluctance and turned as she opened up the door wide. Three kids stood on the step, their parents at the end of the driveway. There was a princess, the little girl adorable in her golden dress, and what seemed to be two knights on either side with cardboard swords on their backs. Lucien complimented their costumes and she offered them the basket, happier than ever that they hadn't just decided to spend the night in front of the tv.

The captain takes him for a Communist Party cultural coordinator and the intruder gladly adapts to his new role, immediately setting to work at manipulating the passengers and crew into silly and vaguely humiliating games. I'm aware that if you aren't familiar with poland's culture and history this might come off as woefully unfunny, however while the humour might not be universal, the absurd of it all certainly is.

Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) directed by Jim Jarmusch - The film is composed of a comic series of short vignettes shot in black and white built on one another to create a cumulative effect, as the characters discuss things such as caffeine popsicles, Paris in the 1920s, and the use of nicotine as an insecticide – all while sitting around drinking coffee and smoking [x]

"Now that we've quit, we can have one." That's it. That quote is all you need to know about this film.

Casting JonBenet (2017) directed by Kitty Green - Twenty years after the modern world’s most notorious child murder, the legacy of the crime and its impact are explored. [x]

I’m including it mostly because life very literally replaces logic in this one.

A Ghost Story (2017) directed by David Lowery - Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife, only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. [x]

It’s pretty and 92 minutes long, which is a perfect length for a film and that should be reason enough for you to watch it.

also the score is wonderful.

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) directed by Jim Jarmusch - A depressed musician reunites with his lover in the desolate streets of Detroit. Though their romance has endured several centuries, it is tested by the arrival of her capricious and unpredictable younger sister. [x]

the only other title that shows up when you type ‘only lovers’ into letterboxd is “Only Lovers Leave to Die” and I find that hilarious and very on brand for this film.

Annette (2021) directed by Leos Carax - The story of Henry, a stand-up comedian with a fierce sense of humor and Ann, a singer of international renown. In the spotlight, they are the perfect couple, healthy, happy, and glamourous. The birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious girl with an exceptional destiny, will change their lives. [x]

what a wonderful fever dream this film is

Nomadland (2020) directed by Chloé Zhao - A woman in her sixties embarks on a journey through the Western United States after losing everything in the Great Recession, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. [x]

this one made me fight really hard to not lose my ‘I don’t cry in public’ badge

‘I didn’t want my sailboat to be in the driveway when I died. So yeah. And it’s not. My sailboat’s out here in the desert.’

The Nest (2020) directed by Sean Durkin - Rory is an ambitious entrepreneur who brings his American wife and kids to his native country, England, to explore new business opportunities. After abandoning the sanctuary of their safe American suburban surroundings, the family is plunged into the despair of an archaic ’80s Britain and their unaffordable new life in an English manor house threatens to destroy the family. [x]

100% convinced it was the horse’s ghost that was responsible for all that tension

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) directed by Marielle Heller - An award-winning cynical journalist, Lloyd Vogel, begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write an Esquire profile piece on the beloved television icon Fred Rogers. After his encounter with Rogers, Vogel’s perspective on life is transformed. [x]

it's been two years and I'm still as confused and conflicted about this film as I was the night I watched this

Corpus Christi (2019) directed by Jan Komasa - A pious 20-year-old juvenile delinquent is sent to work at a sawmill in a small town; on arrival, he dresses up as a priest and accidentally takes over the local parish. [x]

After watching this I spent an unhealthy amount of time trying to figure out how the same person who created Suicide Room could make something this good. turns out he didn't write this one. mystery solved.

The Farewell (2019) directed by Lulu Wang - A headstrong Chinese-American woman returns to China when her beloved grandmother is given a terminal diagnosis. Billi struggles with her family’s decision to keep grandma in the dark about her own illness as they all stage an impromptu wedding to see grandma one last time. [x]

some people laugh during this one and some cry and all of them are right to do so

Shoplifters (2018) directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda - After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them.

He died when she was 10, and then her mom moved them back to Point Place to be with their family.

Present Day: At first, Rose seems like a dumb, popular, pretty girl who cares too much about fashion, cheerleading, and 90's boybands. She’s addicted to shopping and loves buying expensive things. But as the series goes on the real Rose reveals herself. Rose is ambitious, romantic, and stubborn about her life. She possesses great devotion to her friends and family. She has a witty, blunt, and sarcastic sense of humor. For Rose, life is like a stage and she's playing the leading role. She wants to be liked, and she focuses too heavily on her self-image. She craves attention and recognition. She will quickly resort to deception and create a whole mess of lies to cover her mistakes. She’ll even convince herself that she’s in the right by doing so. She can be overbearing and is sometimes nerve-wracking to her friends and family. She can come off as self-centered and shallow, but it’s more of a coping/defense mechanism. She's a subtle people pleaser. She can be naive and overcommits herself to activities. Rose can pick up even the subtlest shifts in her family’s moods or expressions. Rose is an excellent listener, because of this, she has a nearly unmatched ability to have positive and enjoyable conversations with all sorts of people – even people who aren’t particularly sociable or agreeable.

Relationship: Rose is dating Nate. Nate is easy-going and fun-loving.

Friends:

1) Leia Forman – At first, Rose and Leia don’t get along. Rose is doing her best to impress Leia, but Leia believes Rose to be superficial and phony. Rose eventually wins her over.

2) Dominic Jonson – Dominic is the son of Angie Barnet, Rose’s Aunt, and is Rose’s cousin. He is a charming and flirty aspiring videographer and Rose’s closest friend.

3) Anthony – Anthony is Fez’s son. He is an insightful and perceptive teen who identifies as gay. He often sees straight through Rose’s act and calls her out when she’s being fake. (I kind of like the idea of him being the child of Fez and Laurie because I read a story with Fez and Laurie as a background couple that really made me ship them.)

4) Betsy Kelso – Betsy is like the older sister that Rose never had.
