Recently Viewed: Okko’s Inn
Like many of Japan’s finest animated features (particularly those produced by Studio Ghibli), Okko’s Inn is so elegantly simple and thematically transparent that it defies analytical dissection—its beauty resonates in the heart and soul, not in the brain.
Tumblr media
The plot revolves around a young girl that moves to her grandmother’s quaint countryside inn after losing both of her parents in a horrific car accident. Once there, she encounters a trio of lonely ghosts, who encourage her to carry on her family’s legacy by becoming the “junior manager" of the establishment. These supernatural supporting characters aren’t the stereotypical “silly sidekicks” traditionally found in this kind of “kids’ movie”—on the contrary, they play a pivotal role in personifying the protagonist’s internal conflict. Okko’s relationship with her ethereal companions gradually teaches her how to properly process her repressed grief and trauma; she, in turn, gives them the courage to finally let go of their earthly attachments and move on to the afterlife.
Thus, Okko’s Inn is reminiscent of My Neighbor Totoro, A Letter to Momo, and Kiki’s Delivery Service: beneath the exterior of its charmingly minimalistic narrative, there resides profound emotional complexity.

Waka okami wa shôgakusei! by Kitarō Kōsaka (OT of Okko’s Inn)
In an industry clouded with brilliant talent, Okko’s Inn will likely not leave a mark through its failure at being a touching or interesting-- rather, it falls into cliches and uninspired tropes so much it would probably have worked better as a mediocre anime series.

This is a trailer for another movie I’m really looking forward to seeing.  OKKO’S INN is directed by Kitaro Kosaka.  In case you don’t know Mr. Kosaka has participated as a principal animator on many of Studio Ghibli’s classic films.  His name can be found on the credits for “Castle in the Sky”, “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, “My Neighbor Totoro”, “Porco Rosso”... you name it!  He has said that he has observed children in making this movie.  The dub also sounds very promising.  In this clip, young Okko gets a surprise encounter from a mischievous ghost named Uribo, who we first see picking his nose before a disgusted Okko.  He offers a handshake, and her response, naturally, is, “With booger hands!?  Gross!”  The delivery sounds very promising on this one.

Okko’s Inn Official (English) Trailer
Synopsis:  After losing her parents in a car accident, Okko goes to live in the countryside with her grandmother, who runs a traditional Japanese inn built on top of an ancient spring said to have healing waters. While she goes about her chores and prepares to become the inn’s next caretaker, Okko discovers there are spirits who live there that only she can see – not scary ones, but welcoming ghosts who keep her company, play games and help her navigate her new environment. The inn’s motto is that it welcomes all and will reject none, and this is soon put to the test as a string of new guests challenge Okko’s ability to be a gracious host. But ultimately Okko discovers that dedicating herself to others becomes the key to taking care of herself.
In theaters for two-nights only on April 22 & 23. Tickets & Locations: https://GKIDS.com/OkkosInn
