Mortal Kombat 1 & "Girl Power"

Content warnings: Unsurprisingly all the new Mortal Kombat trailers include high definition depictions of extremely gorey violence and death. Like, gives developers PTSD extreme. I will link to the trailers, but not include them inline. I did include a more cartoony Mortal Kombat 2 fatality.

Mortal Kombat (MK) has a long history, ever since Mortal Kombat 2, of not great female outfits.

Ed Boon has had a long history justifying this with "girl power" and that its a game where women get to be kickass, and now there's been an announcement that Mortal Kombat is setting up for... yet another reboot of the narrative.

So let's investigate Ed's claims of girl power, now they're giving the world a soft reboot and have used it to do redesigns and depict the characters in their ideal situations.

The new game Announcement Trailer that the characters now have a "choice" to live in quiet, serene lives they have - until we get a montage of Shang Stun just murdering them. Notably some of them get to make token effort to fight back, but it's not until the Gameplay Trailer we see them actually bust any worthwhile moves.

Kitana

In the initial trailer, Princess Kitana gets shown being carried in luxurious wagon before the crowds, accompanied by the oddly threatening Mileena. So... doesn't seem she's getting the same level of deep fulfilment the boys are.

The next time we see her - she's just like... kneeling in front of Shang Tsun and waiting to get her eyeballs gouged out with his thumbs.

In the second trailer, completely unconnected to the noble quest the boys are preparing for - she's having a battle with Mileena that seems fuelled by jealousy and paranoia.

We don't get to see any of her fatalities in the fatality montages - and while we see the boys testing one another, and building an alliance against their oppressor - we just see the girls squabbling.

Would this be an awkward time to bring up that Princess Kitana used to be 10,000 years old and expert at dealing with the machinations of the courts - unlike Fire God Liu Kang, she's been nerfed.

Mileena

Milenna gets shown riding with Kitana... and implied to be her rival, but is apparently now the actual Empress. then the next time we see her it's in a half-second clip of her getting her neck snapped effortlessly.

In the second trailer she trades blows with Kitana for a while, tagging in Goro to do some big hits and then later she's in a fight with one of the boys... the hits are done by another one of the boys she tags in.

We don't get to see any of her fatalities, which is pretty disappointing given that hers have often been particularly creative with the horror angle.

Sonya Blade

Sonya doesn't appear at all... and in the second trailer she rushes in during a fight to do like a weird, flip where she suplexes someone with her legs - then runs out again. Sort of a tag team feature that she seems to do just once.

She doesn't get a line, she doesn't get to show off a move set, she doesn't make a critical move and doesn't get a fatality. Sonya Blade, the original

Fuck you Ed, stop trying to justify your own jerk off material as "girl power" retroactively and pretending that you don't think women deserve to be badass. And give the people what they want to see:

That and like female characters who are as badass and badass looking as the boys - and shown to be as driven and interesting.

Ed, make Sheeva the main character of the promotions, you coward.

Ya'll think Liu Kang is jealous of the Raiden and Kitanan flirting? The people will say its because they’re “Edenian” or some shit (atleast for Kitanan, Sindel, and Mileena and Tanay as well), so making them appear as one race ruins the image in people’s heads that those characters can be whatever race they want. Like what they did when they race-bent Mileena in the movies, “She’s Edenian so she can be whatever race they want”. Like no bitches, she’s so clearly Asian facing (as are Sindel, and Kitana and Raiden).

it’s weird to see people get so upset about raiden, kitana, sindel, etc being asian and tanya being black. like why do them not being white make you so angry🤡. especially considering the whole franchise is influenced by asian culture

here have some kitahara/nanjo headcanons (i actually wrote these around when s3 was announced but never posted them rip)

Nanjo will take his sweet time getting places so Ren has flat out bridal-carried him up and ran on several occasions

(Though when Nanjo knows Ren is excited for something he’ll make sure to move just as fast as Ren does)

Nanjo sometimes hums mindlessly when he’s pouring water or something and Ren thinks it’s the cutest thing

Ren loves seeing Nanjo all sleepy and ruffled but that state lasts for about 0.2 seconds in the mornings and it frustrates Ren to no end

Nanjo is surprisingly cuddly at night and Ren finds it adorable

Nanjo has a relatively easy time doing school work, but Ren has to study a crap ton to pass and has trouble staying focused, so Nanjo typically studies with him

(somewhat based off my sibling headcanons) Ren once (tentatively) asked Nanjo how a meeting with his brother went and Nanjo replied “Fine” then smiled the fakest smile Ren has ever seen and Ren honestly wanted to cry

Nanjo happily eats Ren’s food but he also insults it so Ren isn’t actually sure what to think

Sometimes it strikes Nanjo just how talented Ren is and he’s just. He’s so proud and happy for his (boy)friend

(He also gets kinda down on himself, but Ren makes sure that part of Nanjo shuts tf up)

Ren makes stupid decisions and Nanjo does literally nothing to stop him

This pair is so touchy-feely but it’s always casual touch? Like legs pressed together when they sit next to each other and arms flung over shoulders and looped around waists

Toraishi and Ren may have joked about tiring of seeing each others’ faces but like. Nanjo is in Toraishi and Ren’s dorm more than Ren is?? so

Both of them are low-key motivated by spite a lot of the time

Nanjo is actually a science nerd and every now and then he’ll say something and everyone’s like ???? because what does that even mean

He also knows a bunch of random facts about different cultures and he never knows what to do with them

Nanjo: “You can fight Ren, if you’d like - he probably deserves it - but you’re going to lose”

Ren: “I should tell you not to fight Koki but idk he probably deserves it. You’re going to lose tho”

Also Nanjo and Ren: “If you fight him then you have to fight me, too”

They’re both assholes a lot of the time but everyone seems to like them ?? and the star teams are Confused (including the ones who like them)

I feel like the rest of Team Sazanami simultaneously trusts the two of them unwaveringly and would not even trust them with a plastic spoon. It’s weird.

I woke up this morning with the James song Laid in my head. You've probably heard it even if you don't think you have, it was a regular on sound tracks and trailers once upon a time. Anyway, I was rather young when it came out and it was like... very cool in my opinion. It romanticized this sort of disaster of a relationship that I very much wanted because it was the sort of painful train wreck you read about from all the coolest gin fueled authors. Images of alcoholic wrecks fighting with each other in a relationship that's main goal was to destroy one another somehow felt very glamorous. A lot of young people go through this I think. Anyway, as I got older and indeed had some pretty terrible, no good, very bad relationships they lost their luster and I don't know when but eventually I came to realize the narrator in the song is an absolute asshole. He seemed so cool to me once upon a time, this girl was obsessed with him and listen to that word play, the neighbors complain about the noises above but she only cums when she's on top? Amazing. Now I know he's just a dick drama queen falling into that same bullshit men love to do. "This chick is so crazy, she's so obsessed with me". It's Drama Queen nonsense that puts them at the center of someone's obsession because they are so great and also completely leaves out all the shit they did to lead to this. I don't know this made up person but years of experience have taught me he probably is crazy codependent and obsessively clung to this woman until one day he got tired of it and pushed her away. Then she is the crazy one for not understanding things changed and being hurt when she figured out she did. What a nut job! Anyway, my point is age can often take the exact same thing in your life and radically recontextualize it. Life preexistence helps, as does empathy for other points of view, being a teenager is sort of inherently self absorbed, the world doesn't extend much beyond your fingertips. That's not a criticism, it's an important part of figuring out who you are but age definitely has put you in enough different shoes to realize you're not always the main character in the story and you certainly aren't always the hero. Anyway, I was thinking about that this morning and how much stuff can shift in your brain over time but also your heart and so on. Ship of Theseus stuff. There is also a new Street Fighter game on the horizon which always means google pushes articles to me about the Chun Li reveal because I guess Google knows me better than anyone else on the planet. For whatever reason as a kid I just thought Chun Li was amazingly hot. This was not something I shared with friends because it felt somehow shameful or... look, they would have mocked me. I would have mocked anyone who told me like Kitanan was hot or something. They were pixels (Sonia Blade got a pass from people cause the first mortal combat had that video stuff of her getting ready to break blocks) and thus it would be shameful to be attracted to them. And you know, in fairness, we are talking about changes of perspective and Chun Li looked like this when I was a kid.

Which is my way of saying not everything changes. I was right then and I am right now. Look at the way she kicks. Can you do that shit? Find me one other person who can kick so fast her feet make blue stuff come out. You can't. You won't. Judge me all you want, at least Google gets me. Today I want to fuck Chun Li Xiang.
