Project Revival Revival Project Devblog #1
Hey guys, blog post number 1 here. This is my first blog post, so let鈥檚 just get right into it. As you can guess, these entries are semi-formal.
So, what鈥檚 been going on with the server since we released the conscript guide? Well, less than I had hoped. Let鈥檚 take a look. We did an event, we made CWU guide progress, we added fully implemented UU Brand items, and we argued about which apples are the best. Let鈥檚 start with the CWU guide. I鈥檝e been the only person writing it, not that I鈥檓 complaining. I鈥檝e put down an outline covering the different branches of the CWU (think CMU, Commerce, Infestation Control, etc.), the management structure of the CWU, descriptions of each branch and how they work, and a section on rules and things about the CWU as well as the glossary. At the time of writing this, I鈥檝e finished the basic branch overview sections, the descriptions of the different CWU ranks, Director, Manager, Supervisor, all that. I finished the sections on the Commerce Branch and the Decontamination Corps. Those are finalized, save one little exception, I need to add more examples of what a high work job would be for decontamination corps workers. Work for it has stagnated recently, just because while I can do technical writing, that doesn鈥檛 mean I love doing it. Unfortunately, my inability to focus and my skill at procrastinating has been a bit of a barrier. Still, I鈥檓 hoping I can get it done quickly. I鈥檝e got 6 more guides to write and time isn鈥檛 moving any slower. Just to let you all know, the guides are, in this order, the OTA guide, the vortigaunt guide, the CAC guide, the OSA guide, and then the city bureaucracy guide. As I said before, I implemented UU brand items. Some of them weren鈥檛 working as consumable food for hunger anymore, but now they all do. We also added a few new items that hadn鈥檛 existed before such as popcorn, peanuts, bananas, pickles, and a handful of others. In the process of doing this, I argued with LightROOM about which types of apples are the best. The correct answer is Honeycrisp.
So, what鈥檚 coming up? Things that may be on the backburner, or are planned next, that type of thing. Well, the very next plan after the CWU guide, if not during, is to make all of the weapons we鈥檒l use in RP into Helix items. This really only goes for one SWEP, but I still need to double check and make sure I鈥檓 not missing something. After that, as you can imagine, we鈥檝e got guides to write. The OTA guide is up next, and shouldn鈥檛 be too difficult to write. Half of the content, if not more, should overlap with the CCA guide. The biggest challenge is making a good rank system that isn鈥檛 super confusing. Even then, it shouldn鈥檛 be too difficult. Also, keep in mind, snipers will not be called RANGER. That鈥檚 a common practice that I don鈥檛 really care about, but I heard the name SCALPEL somewhere else so I鈥檓 completely in love with it. Anyways, other than guides, what鈥檚 coming up next? I鈥檝e got several items and weapons to make or find. Flashbangs, smoke grenades, tear gas, riot shields, deployable manhacks, and armor repair kits. As a staff team, we have to write a detailed rules and policies document for the server. I鈥檓 not trying to rewrite the Constitution, I just want to make our rules and how things are punished more clear and universal. Same goes for our handling of permakills, NLR, lines at which unionwashing can be broken, what items go out for what loot rolls, and various other important things staff need to know. Something else I鈥檓 very excited about, don鈥檛 expect this to come out super soon, but I have to do an OSA overhaul which I鈥檓 very excited for. I get to add hunters that don鈥檛 function exclusively with a pill, I鈥檓 transferring over stalkers to be combat units like in the beta, I have to write a SWEP for the Combine Super Soldier, a SWEP for the elite synth soldiers, all this fun stuff that I鈥檓 very excited to do. We鈥檒l get there, don鈥檛 worry. Next up, what are some less defined, more hopeful future things to look forward to? I鈥檝e been thinking about adding a staff schedule for over the summer. That way, we can be guaranteed to have staff on the server at all possible active hours, and the server won鈥檛 be dead 95% of the time like it has been for the last while. That鈥檚 not confirmed, but it鈥檚 very likely I鈥檒l do something along those lines. I鈥檇 like to get some more events in. Given that it鈥檚 July, a lot of people are on summer break, so hopefully I can do some mid-day events. The next campaign is also somewhere in the future. I鈥檝e been teasing it for the last couple events, but I want to plan it and get official campaign events going. I鈥檝e also got ideas for special events to happen during the summer. I can鈥檛 be too specific because I don鈥檛 want to build hype for something not even confirmed yet, but I can say that I鈥檓 hopeful they do get to happen and I鈥檓 excited to make them full priority after I can get the Project Revival Revival Project done. Other things I鈥檇 just in general like to do, a more expanded crafting system, possibly something to simulate survivalism, industry and work cycle expansion, replacement of CID cards with identibands, a health charger revamp, scanner to combot transition, and a few other things. I could talk for hours about all the things I eventually want to do. That blog post would be a few pages long at the very least.
So, all that said, how am I feeling about the server? Over the past week, a bit worried, hopeful, and not too much of anything else. I鈥檝e been busy assembling my cosplays for a convention coming up next weekend, so the server has unfortunately been on the backburner this week. I鈥檓 a bit disappointed that the player count tanked again, but I shouldn鈥檛 get too down about it, because it鈥檚 absolutely my fault. I鈥檓 trying to justify with myself that it鈥檚 okay because the rerelease will make everything better, but I can鈥檛 be sure of that. So I鈥檓 worried that I鈥檓 just contributing to the slow and painful re-death of the server. I get bursts of inspiration a lot, but the work ahead of me is discouraging. Writing the guides is a big slog for me. Hopefully I can get through it soon. I really want to keep this all going.
That鈥檚 about it for this first blog entry. It was a bit lengthy, but I want to be transparent with you guys. I want you all to know we haven鈥檛 forgotten about you all, and writing these posts holds us accountable for the goals we set and the work we do. To those of you who are patiently waiting, I see you and I appreciate you. You guys are great and the time you spend on the server warms my heart.

Crowbar Collective has announced that the final version of the Source Engine remake of Half-Life, Black Mesa, is now available on Steam. In order to celebrate this announcement, the team has also released a brand new trailer that you can find below.
Black Mesa is a fan remake of the first Half-Life game in Source Engine. The game hit Early Access on May 5th, 2015. However, Crowbar Collective has been working on it for the past 15 years.
Furthermore, the Black Mesa team has revealed the full patch notes for version 1.0. According to the changelog, the team has done a complete overhaul pass on the combat design and guidance for all the earthbound levels. The team has also redesigned the HECU marine AI, upgraded the Vortigaunts AI, and built a new, modern user interface.
Below you can find the complete changelog for Black Mesa 1.0.
Have fun!
Black Mesa 1.0 Patch Notes
Game-Wide
Our time in Early Access gave us lots of opportunities to beta test new content and talk with our community. We took what we learned during the development of Xen, and applied it to the Earthbound Chapters.
Improvements to every major combat arena in the game
Redesigned puzzles for clarity and intention
Enhance environments to highlight objectives
Art
We took a number of sections throughout the game and updated them visually to help the game feel more cohesive. We also made better use of the dynamic lights that we created for Xen.
Artificial Intelligence
HECU
Better utilize cover and movement in general
Put suppressing fire on players last known location and where they expect you to be
Use grenades more strategically and more often
New environmental analysis lets them track, flank, and move in for the kill
Use weapons and abilities depending on their class
Occasionally use RPGs (grenadiers)
Use under barrel MP5 grenade launcher (commanders)
Drop med kits properly (medics)
Marines wearing a gas-mask will now use alternate, radio-filtered, deepened voice lines, which sound much more like the original HECU!
Use more voice lines and communication
Vortigaunts
Dodge on spawn or dodge when player aims at Vort
Better navigate to the player
Use close-range charge attack (Dispel)
Use dynamic lights when attaching
Vorts AI now behave differently depending on how brave or scared they are feeling, which is based on damage taken / done to the enemy.
Balance
Slightly nerfed assassins to have lower health and accuracy
Nerfed Abrams 50 cal damage to make it less murderous
Buffed Apache 30mm damage slightly
Code Fixes
Optimized sun shadows
Optimized dynamic lights
Fixed bug with popping sun shadows
Removed view punch from smaller caliber weapons
Fixed trip mine hitbox
Added dynamic lights to portal effects
Fixed NPC teeth being black or bright colors
Made sure all tripod and ceiling turrets use tracers
Fixed gravity in Earthbound
Fixed HECU calling wrong SMG animation
All new, modern user interface
Expanded options with descriptions and performance cost
Fixed HEV chargers giving you 76 charge instead of 75
Fixed slide sound effect playing each time the player crouched
Changed tank machine gun accuracy for better game play

Tossing under readmore because youre giving me THOUGHTS:
I feel like all would go fairly well until Emmet found out what the Combine does to antlion grubs, at which point he might end up the one with a crowbar.
Oh gosh could you imagine though? If he was an NPC that was helpful to Gordon/Alyx/Player, but his willingness to help was dependent on how many times you didn't use health stations?
Maybe he'd give med-kits and over time insinuate that he's got a slow, kind system for extracting the anti-bullet-juice out of the grubs you don't squish. And the more you leave for him, the more spare time he has to work on new technologies like the "Russell"s. Maybe this helps you win against G-man at the end if you complete the game without harming a single grub?
But if you just use the health stations anyways, he's forced to constantly be focusing on making med-kits. Maybe there's dialogue you never hear about his lost brother or the fact his name isn't Russell, because bug train man does not trust or like you.
Also, the Vortigaunts would probably avoid him like the plague. Maybe in the good route he asks you what the "furless Meinshou", "tall Bisharp", or "dark Sawk" are, as he keeps catching glimpses. Eventually he settles on calling them Zoroarks.
Playing games with @nerdneeniya last night was fun, especially
"Hey so I thought of a terrible crossover AU"
Friend, reloading gun in Half Life Alyx: "...go on."
"...Emmet looking for his brother, ends up in Half Life."
Friend, understandably: "NO!"
"but but but! What if headcrabs could be caught in pokeballs and he thinks they're just regional variant Joltik? What if he saves the world by catching all the aliens?"
Later: "Ahh, so the strider knows Bullet Seed, Stomp, and Rock Slide"
Friend, frantically dodging bullets and a crumbling building: "Are you giving it pokemon moves???"
"yes."
Friend, dying to a sudden last attack by said strider: "What? How?"
"Oh so it also knows Hyper Beam."
"what if Emmet is G-Man? Wait wrong hair. What if Emmet is Russell?"

Arcane Background (Alien Science)
Arcane Background (Alien Science) Arcane Skill: Knowledge (Alien Science) Starting Power Points: 10 Starting Powers: 1 Power List:
Armor (Converted -- Chitin coverings)
Jet (Eye -- 3rd Eye)
Bolt (Alien Pistol)
Boost Trait (Any -- various muscle and ligament grafts)
Fear (Converted -- Exuded alien essence)
Thumper Stun (Thumper -- thumpers "drum" implanted in chest)
Blast (Alien Rifle)
Summon Ally (Alien Rod)
Summon Ally (Bugbait)
Alien Science Powers all require parts from specific alien types or equipment (noted above) in order to function. Those powers that required parts from alien types are actually grafts of these alien parts onto the receiver of the power. Those that require alien equipment represent the Alien Scientist figuring out how to make the item function, including altering body chemistry through alien grafts and the like. Alien Scientists receive one power when they take the Arcane Background Edge. If they take the New Power Edge, they must discover their new power using the Investigate skill at some available resource (such as the Research Facility鈥檚 labs or computer networks or informed by a Vortigaunt). This skill test must be attempted after the hero takes the New Power Edge, and requires 2-5 hours to complete. If the skill test is failed, the scientist must wait a full day before trying again, due to the mental stress of the operation.
Grafting alien parts onto human subjects is a dangerous and rather disgusting proposition. First, the scientist must find a viable subject. Any alien killed in combat is only 10% likely to have the requisite parts. Then, the parts must be harvested, which requires an Alien Science (-2) roll. Failure indicates the subject is no longer a viable donor. The grafting process takes 4-8 hours and requires a Knowledge (Alien Science) success. The Alien Scientist must have access to a full lab (+1) or a lab kit (0) to harvest and graft alien parts, as well as to research any alien technology. Attempting to graft or research technology with other tools imparts a -4 penalty to the skill roll.
The recipient of the graft must make a Vigor (-1) roll to accept the graft. On a failure, the recipient must make a Vigor (-1) roll each time the graft is used or take a Fatigue level. The recipient of the graft makes either a Knowledge (Alien Science) roll or a Spirit (-2) roll to use the graft. Each graft has 10 power points. The graft recharges at 1 power point per hour. Those with visible grafts receive a -2 Charisma and may develop other Hindrances such as Delusion, Bad Eyes, or the like.
