“Hello, hello, hello. Look what the kitty cat dragged in. Now, what are you doing in the boys’ dorms, Kitty Cat?” He asks me, those dead blue eyes staring into mine. 

“Not in the mood for your games,” I say, moving to push past him. “And that’s not my name and you know it.” I bite out, smoothing my uniform and shouldering him out of the way. He catches me by the waist. I glare up at him, wanting to smack that stupid smirk off of his face. “Can you not with the whole creepy upperclassman thing and leave me alone?”

He laughs, but takes the hint and lets go of my waist. “Not so fast. What’s a goody-two-shoes like you doing in the boys dorm? Let me guess… walk of shame?” He suggests with a raise of his eyebrow. “Who’s the lucky guy?”

r’s family throws the fanciest parties.

last time kit was at one of these, she and lemony were sneaking into the kitchen, getting a taste of the food before they got served to r’s family’s high society friends. lemony had long ago befriended the head chef, and that day they had been eagerly discussing a modification to a recipe for some kind of cookie while one of the girls in the kitchen staff offered alcohol to kit discreetly.

today, though, kit’s not here as r’s friend who isn’t officially invited and can only hang out in the kitchen. today she has a special mission, namely to help r fend off any potential suitors her family has found for her, playing the role of the fake girlfriend. two hours ago, the she and r were in r’s mother’s study, r smiling brightly at her mother and holding kit’s arm and promising her mother that she’s “long over beatrice”.

and now here kit is, sampling various food dishes elegantly with r by her side, instead of hanging out with the kitchen staff and listening to her younger brother talk about the best way to make root beer floats. it’s nice, the atmosphere, although a bit inconvenient since r said she has to dress formally for this.

at a distance, kit notices one of jacques’s coworker, geraldine julienne. “what’s she doing here?”

“mother needs someone to cover this party,” r shrugs, leading her towards the reporter’s directions. “and jacques is on some other assignment. come on, let’s give her something to write about, shall we? dance with me?”

kit smiles. “since you asked so beautifully.”

they dance, aware of geraldine taking pictures of them. “this is going to be front page,” kit observes.

“do you mind?” r asks.

“if i do, i wouldn’t have agreed to this,” kit assures her. “plus, the food is excellent. hey, are there still those chocolates your father got from his trip last time? b asked me to steal some.”

technically it was dewey who asked, ever since kit brought one back from last party, but r doesn’t know about dewey.

“sure, they’re over there,” r says, starting to guide kit in that direction. “which b?” she asks curiously.

“bertrand,” kit says easily. “and thanks, i’ll grab some.” and she does, slipping them into one of the many pockets in her dress. technically, both beatrice and jacques had told her that pockets are out of style since last month, but she has decided that she doesn’t care.

olaf saunters over, and grins at her. “why kit, if you had wanted to come to the party so much, you could’ve just asked me. you know i would take you, if you just ask.”

“olaf,” r says.

“care to dance?” he ignores r, only looking at kit.

r frowns.

“just one song,” kit says.

he smiles, obnoxiously, but the smile vanishes as they start dancing. “are you here as r’s girlfriend?” he demands.

“yes,” kit says drily. “i thought that was clear.”

he narrows his eyes. “what are you playing at, snicket? is this one of your ‘secret messages’ to me?”

she rolls her eyes. “no. honestly, not everything is about you.”

“you could’ve asked me, you know,” he reiterated.

kit raised an eyebrow. “we are not together, o, you do remember that, right?”

“the summer camp—” he begins.

“was fun,” she interrupts smoothly. “but what happened at the summer camp stays at the summer camp, yes?”

“fine,” he snaps. “well, i have to get back to my date.” he emphasized, as if trying to get a reaction out of her.

kit reacts, in an amused manner. “ah,” she says knowingly. “the esme girl, is it?”

he frowns. “how did you —”

“b told me,” she shrugs. “if you are actually interested, though, i’d advise you to do something about it soon, or she’s going to steal her away.”

“impossible,” olaf scoffs. “esme hates beatrice.”

kit hums. “or so she says.”

“what,” he narrows his eyes. “have you been hearing?”

kit laughs, “all sorts of things. but i have to get back to r. you have fun.”

he rolls his eyes. “yeah, yeah, whatever.”
