Stereo Embers The Podcast: Rain Phoenix and Kirk Hellie (Escape Artist Lovers)
Tumblr media
Thursdays 2pm-3pm EST 11pm-12pm PDT 7pm-8pm BST bombshellradio.com stereoembersmagazine.com Stereo Embers Magazine #StereoEmbers, #podcast, #RadioShow, #AlexGreen, #Nowplaying, #BombshellRadio, #StereoEmbersThePodcast Repeats Fridays 1am EST and Sundays 11am EST   "Follow The Leader" So, Rain Phoenix first was on my radar back in 1991 when she and her brother River had a band called Aleka's Attic. They had a marvelous song called Across The Way on this compilation Tame Yourself, which also featured The Pretenders, Michael Stipe, the Indigo Girls and K.D. Lang. The Texas-born Phoenix acted in TV shows like Family Ties and Amazing Stories and in movies like Even Cowgirls Get The Blues and Hitch. She fronted Papercranes, who put out three really great albums and she was in the Galactic Country band Venus and the Moon with Chris Stills. She also put out a really stunning solo album called River, which was named after her late brother, in 2019. A native of Southern California, Kirk Hellie is like a music archeologist because he knows how to dig sounds out of the deepest of grounds. A lover and studier of Avant Garde music, was in bands like Hellie Siblings, Death Loop Detonator and Pink Noise Test. Hellie played with Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, and toured with The Cramps and Iggy Pop.Together, Phoenix and Hellie are Escape Artist Lovers, who play a dizzying blend of sonorous and scruffy indie rock that sounds something like Beth Orton fronting the Jesus and Mary Chain. The interplay between these two musicians is pure magic and the songs, whether they're stripped back or coated in layers of fuzz and groove, are delicious slices of melodic bliss. https://escapeartistlovers.bandcamp.com/ www.launchleft.com www.bombshellradio.com www.embersarts.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: [email protected] Read the full article

Despite the darkly romantic ambiance, it was impossible to miss Joaquin Phoenix at Zebulon, the shuttered Brooklyn music venue that has been reincarnated as a Los Angeles hotspot in Frogtown. Not because it was Monday evening and the Hollywood premiere of “Joker” was just two nights earlier or because his longtime publicist, Susan Patricola, and his elegant girlfriend Rooney Mara, were perched nearby. It’s because the hoodie-clad actor was shouting his big sister’s name in that unmistakably husky voice: “Rain!”
And all eyes were on Rain, the eldest Phoenix sibling, as she took the stage. “We’re playing you songs from my upcoming record, ‘River,’” she said, referencing her late brother, bandmate in Aleka’s Attic and, more recently, muse.
[...] Rocking aviators and a low-cut black ensemble, Rain’s look evoked iconic troubadours such as Patti Smith. But the vibe was intimate and cozy — not exactly rock ’n’ roll. Rather than stand for the show, many people in the crowd proved that they weren’t too cool to sit on the floor and kick back, which made the venue look not unlike an enormous living room. But Rain wasn’t afraid to make people uncomfortable. “We can talk about the elephant in the room if you want,” she said in between songs.
“The Dodgers!” someone shouted. “I was thinking about death,” she said. “Let’s talk about death, shall we?” Rain continued. “I mean, just more, in general. And let’s comfort the people who have people who die. Like us — all of us — right? And by ‘comfort,’ I mean: Let’s not change the subject. And let’s try to be there for each other more. Because it’s the one thing that we all share even if we don’t agree politically.”
“Who knows what death is?” she asked the audience. “It could be the most magical thing. We’re so terrified of it — we’re so scared …. I appreciate you allowing me the opportunity to say it out loud in front of you tonight.” [...] And while Phoenix capped her set with a tune titled “Hey, Heartache” — “it’s a real upbeat jam,” she joked — it ended on a sweet note. “There’s one really happy thing,” Rain said. “If she doesn’t bail, my sister Libby — Liberty Butterfly Phoenix — is going to sing with me on this.”
As an encore of sorts, Rain performed “Lost in Motion,” a song with a very long history. She said: “I wrote it with River and [producer] Kirk Hellie. Please enjoy this song.” The show wrapped with a display of love and affection offstage — long, warm embraces between the four remaining Phoenix siblings — which felt like a family affair, or even a memorial. Because memorials, as they say, are actually to benefit the living, not the dead.

More than 25 years after his death, singer-songwriter, actress and activist Rain Phoenix still feels the strong presence of her big brother River. The new single “You Right,” which comes out Monday, speaks to that sibling bond — or, really, any relationship strong enough to withstand human frailty. [...] “It’s the feeling of being connected to someone who loves you no matter what,” she says of the song. “It’s like, ‘Man, I fucked up, but you’re OK with it, so we can move on.’ I love that, because everybody deserves another chance. When someone’s willing to take responsibility and admit they messed up, how could you not give them a second chance? That to me, is a form of unconditional love in friendships and relationships.”
Phoenix’s album is titled “River,” and it will be released on Oct. 31, the 26th anniversary of his death. It’s an album that is about, for and in some ways by him. “[Releasing music by Aleka’s Attic] was the beginning of ‘River,’” she says. “Once you open the creative portal, you don’t really have control over what happens afterwards. It opened a huge 25-year gap. In its wake, there was a flood of creativity and memories of my brother and his energy. The push for the album to come into the world happened around the 25th anniversary. Through the process of making my solo record, I realized that instead of trying to understand music without him, I needed to include him, because he never really left. I kept making music and realized it was going to be a record. It grew organically and felt guided. It wasn’t in the head; it was in the heart. So, I let the creative portal stay open.”
Phoenix says that in making the album with collaborator/producer Kirk Hellie, she reconnected with her brother. “In many ways, the connection had been closed for a long time,” she explains. “I think I locked it up to protect him. I needed to unlock it to move forward. Halfway through the record, I had an epiphany it would be named after him. Throughout the process, it became clear this could be a celebration of his life. I think after I named it ‘River,’ it tapped into that beautiful and unconscious place where I believe art comes from”
