They were close. The scent of blood was heavy in the air and the muffled sound of labored breathing and racing hearts was like a steady thunder drumming in his ears. All of those things could have been easily missed by someone with senses far less keen than his, but unfortunately for those he pursued he was ever the vigilant hunter.

A wavering glimpse of movement in the thick mist had his eyes fixed on their location, although he didn't need his sight to locate them. He'd been hunting in these unforgiving conditions for his entire life and tracking prey through it was hardly a problem, which was another reason he was so feared. True, others raised in this area were quite capable too, more than most, but he was another animal altogether. He was born for this and everyone else damn well knew it.

Slowly he crept closer, footfalls silent on the thick marshy grass. All the while those he hunted didn't have the slightest clue, the group of weary shinobi nervously looking around their surroundings like a group of frightened deer. But for all their caution they failed to notice the predator practically on top of them and breathing down their necks until it was too late.

By the time his targets realized he was there it was all but over. Swiftly he'd unsheathed his legendary blade and cut a swath through the confused shinobi flaying the flesh from their bones and the chakra from their veins. A few tried to run and fewer still tried to beg for mercy but all met the same gruesome end, cut down and left in a pool of swiftly cooling blood. All the while a smile sat stretched upon his lips, sharp triangular teeth peeking through as if inviting the chaos which he'd sewn.

As he'd finished cutting down the last man and pulling the scroll he sought from his belongings he felt another presence nearby. Instead of attacking it though he continued to smile, sheathing his sword once more now that its hunger had been sated.

“Itachi-san, I didn't expect you. I thought that you were still resting.”

“I see you've decided to take matters into your own hands yet again.”

“It was easy enough, besides, I doubt that you needed to bother getting your hands dirty. Me on the other hand, I rather enjoy it. But what's important is the job is done isn't it?”

“Your words ring true, but with the task finished we have no reason to stay here. We better continue onward before the others being to inquire about our whereabouts. It wouldn't do to keep them waiting since you know how they are.”

“Heh, all business as always aren't you?” Wiping one of his bloodied hands on the wet grass he then stood tall. “Let's get going then. I'm sure that the marsh will take care of these corpses for us anyway.”
