I haven't read this manga in so long but she's the main character and is an amazing hairstylist. In most chapters she's yawning or napping in school and trying to ignore the plot happening around her, but she always steps up when she needs to. And afterwards finds a nice place for a nap.

Yuuya Amane:

A constantly sleepy 24-year-old man with a strong penchant for housework. If it wasn't for the needs of his adorable miniature catfolk pets he probably wouldn't get much done st all.

Thank you for your patience! I have finished making the match-ups for Round 1 which will be under the cut. A little information first.

Round 1 will be posted between Friday, January 19th and Thursday, January 25th. It will be split between 4 sets, each set being posted on a different day. There will be a total of 128 participants (32 participants in each individual set) divided in 64 polls (16 polls in each individual set). By the end of Round 1, 64 participants will make it to Round 2 while the rest will be sent to the Shadow Realm where their souls will be tormented for eternity. Meet Koshiba Kiri, a first year at Meiou Private Academy!

Kiri might seem a bit spacey and absent-minded, perhaps even distant to those who don’t know her, but her apathetic demeanor doesn’t run very deep. Kiri cares very much for her small group of friends and for her family. She is very protective of those close to her and those she feels need a bit of magic to reach their full potential, especially those who have been knocked down and disparaged by others. She is a protector and a helper at her core, even if she pretends otherwise. 

In this verse, that protection extends to the Minamino family. 

Minamino Shiori has come to the little salon that belongs to Kiri’s father, Koshiba Seiji, since it opened––largely due to her friendship with Koshiba Emi who she made friends with when they both attended the same university. Shiori is not only a valued customer but also a dear friend of the Koshiba family, as was true of her husband while he was still alive. 

The Koshibas were two of the first people outside of their immediate family to be told of Shiori’s pregnancy, and some of the first ones to see her little miracle baby––Shuichi.

Perhaps seeing stoic, little Shuichi toddling around at the salon, is what prompted Seiji and Emi to finally start their own family, but whatever the reason, soon they had a baby of their own, Kiri.

Two years apart, by the time Kiri was old enough to toddle around, Shuichi didn’t have much time for Kiri’s clumsiness or over-exuberance, often asking either to remain home with father or staying close to his mother.

I’m sorry, Kiri, his mother would apologize, warm smile trying to soothe the disappointed little girl. Shuichi has always been a little shy.

[ That wasn’t the reason, and Kiri knew even then he just didn’t want to deal with her. ]

Regardless, the two interacted very little during the course of their early childhood. 

Even once Kiri started attending the same elementary academy as Shuichi, that persisted. Greeting him in the halls always led to a cool but polite greeting in return. Still she never missed the opportunity. It was the mannerly thing to do after all, and her parents certainly taught her manners!

Kiri didn’t understand him, but then she didn’t mind it either. Shuichi is shy, after all, so she told him ‘hello’ whenever she saw him, but otherwise left him be. She easily made friends with the same outgoing and cheerful personality that, seemingly, had frightened Shuichi away, and she had other interests to keep her preoccupied.

The main of which was her dream of becoming a hairstylist just like her dad, maybe one day the best in all of Japan!

Even at her young age, she showed promise, and by the time she had entered the third grade, she won her first hairstyling contest, beating the genius son of another famous hair stylist who had once been a rival to her father and had remained in the industry to be at the very top, whereas her father had departed from the spotlight well before Kiri was even born.

Because of her skill, Kiri often gave hair cuts to her parents, under her father’s supervision and instruction.

It was a year after her win at the styling contest that, while cutting her mother’s hair, she accidentally cut her ear. The sight of the blood and the fact that it was her fault left her traumatized and unable to hold scissors for a long time. Even once she did begin to pick up scissors again, it was without the same passion she once had and only as one who goes through the motions, usually because her father needed help with cutting wigs, though her skill did continue to develop.

It was unfortunate that not long after this, her mother’s work drew her to the United States––specifically Hollywood, where she continued her work as a special effects makeup artist, gaining awards for her work… but also adding further strain to hers and Kiri’s relationship.

Kiri does not cut hair for any actual person, besides herself, until her last year in junior high school, and she wouldn’t have done that even had it not been at the request of her father.

Kiri, you know I normally cut Minamino-san’s hair, her father began, but her health is too fragile for her to come here, and I can’t close the shop to make a house call. Can’t you go to her and work a little magic? I think she could use it, don’t you?

Reluctant though she was… she couldn’t argue that point, so she left. Arriving at the Minamino residence, she knocked at the door… and was met by Shuichi. Explaining her reason for being there, Shuichi was surprised… but allowed her into their home. After cutting Minamino-san’s hair, she almost took her leave… before looking more closely at Shuichi who appeared… worn and tired.

… You look like you could use a little magic, too. May I?

Yes, Shuichi, his mother said, her smile lingering still and growing brighter with the suggestion. You’ve been working so hard to take care of me that you hardly have any time to take care of you. Please? It would make me happy.

… As you wish, Mother.

After cutting his hair as well, removing any split ends and breakages, she cleaned up her work area [ and maybe a little more than what she absolutely had to ] and then excused herself, letting them return to their evening. This would repeat every five or six weeks, Kiri stopping by to cut their hair, cleaning, and then departing.

Perhaps that was why, when she attended her first day at Meiou Private Academy––High School––when she greeted Shuichi in passing, the response was a bit warmer, even if still distant.

Their routine continues in this manner until one day when she is eating her lunch outside in the garden surrounding the school… when she hears something like a scuffle on the other side of the bushes from where she’s sitting. Against her better-judgement, curiosity gets the better of her and she peeks over the bushes to see…

Shuichi.

At least, it certainly looks like Shuichi with his distinctive red hair.

And yet… despite his affinity for plants, she can’t say that she’s ever seen him turn one into a sword before… something his strange opponent apparently hasn’t seen either, because it isn’t long before the other flees.

She had intended to kneel back down and return to her lunch… if she didn’t disturbed the bush and cause Shuichi to snap around to look for the source of the noise, only to immediately shift in such as way as to obscure the hand that holds his odd sword of vines.

There is something sharp in his manner, something so very unlike the very restrained and soft-spoken Shuichi. He looked sharp and tense and wary, as though he was uncertain whether to run or… she didn’t think about it.

But she doesn’t flinch, even when he addresses her.

Koshiba-san, I didn’t see you there, he says, a careful tone, a brittleness, to his voice.

So you like to take your lunch out here, too? she questions, her own tone and expression as steady and level as ever.

It seems to have the desired effect as Shuichi blinks, a brief expression of bemusement flickering across it before he schools it once more to the careful mask––and she is certain it is a mask of some sort now––that she is so accustomed to seeing.

Ah, yes. I find it a refreshing change from the stifling walls of the classrooms, don’t you?

She nods. It’s a good place for a nap, too.

She watches the tension dissipate a little more, with the addition of a tight almost-smile appearing.

I suppose that it would be, though I cannot say I have ever thought to do as much.

Maybe you should some time. You can’t take care of your mother if you don’t take care of yourself.

Because that’s what it comes down to, as far as Kiri is concerned. Whoever Shuichi is, whatever he is, whatever he can do… He’s basically put his life on hold to take care of his mother. That’s not nothing, not in her book.

Shuichi’s expression softens, if only a little.

… Yes, I suppose you’re correct on that point as well. A beat passes and there is another minute shift, that careful look returning to his eyes. Speaking of my mother, however… will you still be able to stop by tomorrow evening after school?

She doesn’t hesitate, not even to contemplate the reason that he might ask and potential consequences of an answer he doesn’t like. There is only one answer in her mind, after all. She has magic to work.

I’ll be there.

When they go their separate ways, she never says a word about it, even to the events of the show, and she keeps every hair appointment until Minamino-san is well enough to come to the salon again… Shuichi tagging along as well and insisting that she is the only one he trusts to cut his hair.

She adds him to her slowly expanding list of clients and considers that maybe she might reconsider pursuing her dream of being a hair stylist after all, if only to work a little magic for those who need it…
