Hello everyone and happy Friday! It’s the end of the week and I’m celebrating with a book haul. Shockingly enough I have already read two of these books - The Odyssey (review on the grid) and A Fire Endless (review coming soon!) I really enjoyed The Odyssey and will definitely be re-reading it in the future. A Fire Endless is the follow up to Rebecca Ross’ A River Enchanted in the Elements Of Cadence series. Finally The Dance Tree, which has been on my radar for a while and I finally gave in just before Christmas last year 😂 (yes I’m very behind on hauls 🙊). It’s a historical novel set in 16th century France about a real phenomenon - hundreds of women dancing all day without a break that led to a state of emergency being declared! “Set in an era of superstition, hysteria and extraordinary change, and inspired by true events, The Dance Tree is an impassioned story of family secrets, forbidden love and women pushed to the edge.” I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. April 20th, 2020 || 🌊The Mercies 🌊 takes us back to 1617, when a storm killed off 40 fishermen near the coast of Vardo. the women are left to grieve and to fend for themselves. but three years after the catastrophic event they are told that a Scottish man will arrive to take control. A man of God, he is well-known for his witch-hunting history. And Vardo is known for fraternising with Sami people in the past. . i was pleasantly surprised by the story. we follow Ursa and Maren and through their eyes Hargrave tells her tale, based on true events. i will say she is a very skillful writer; the prose is absolutely stunning and atmospheric; the reader can sense the dread that is taking hold of Vardo, like a noose around one’s neck. by the end i was utterly heartbroken. . Mon avis :

J'ai découvert ce livre par le biais d'un extrait gratuit en ligne proposé par l'éditeur. Depuis, je rongeais mon frein. Lorsqu'enfin je l'ai eu, je ne l'ai pas lu tout de suite, pour autant.

Mais malgré tout, lorsqu'enfin je l'ai ouvert, que je me suis replongée dans la dureté de ces terres nordiques, j'ai été happée. Le style de Kiran Millwood Hargrave dans cette œuvre vous prend aux tripes : il est cru, il est violent, il est réaliste. Moi qui n'est pas forcément très portée sur les récits historiques, cette version romancée m'a prouvé qu'une bonne plume peut vous faire lire de tout.

On pouvait presque sentir le froid de Vardø dans ses descriptions, l'horreur de la tempête qui emporta les pêcheurs, la peur et la haine qui fleurit dans cette communauté scindée... Les personnages de Maren et Ursa sont un véritable plus pour le récit, leur points de vue et leur passif permettant au lecteur de s'immerger d'autant plus dans leur histoire. Ce fut une lecture aussi instructive que passionnante.

Petit plus :

Ce récit est inspiré de faits réels. Kiran Millwood Hargrave propose ici une version plus romancée du drame de Vardø, ce village de pêcheurs perdu au nord de la Norvège et permet de mettre en lumière ce côté obscur de l'histoire.

En conclusion :

"Les Graciées" est un roman passionnant qui s'adresse aux amateurs d'histoire (ou plutôt, d'inspiration historique), ou tout simplement d'amateurs de récits captivants, porté par un style viscéral et immersif. Dépaysement assuré !
