thinking about the detective & Rebecca's dynamic sm on this wednesday. the special hell of feeling alone so early on in life. knowing that in stories sometimes grief can bring families together, but not yours. looking at every future relationship or fling or situationship through the lens of being deeply, fundamentally unlovable. because why wouldn't you? what kind of lesson does absence teach? what lesson must be taken away to survive it? even if it's bred from necessity, what does that teach the mc about themselves? will they even know love when they first see it, especially if that love does not look the way they recognize. if it does not look like begging?

the wild flip side of Mello's derangement towards Gevanni is that, in a no-Kira universe, i personally think Near could be almost as bad (at least internally) towards L over Mello. similar situation in that i think L has... not so much interest in Mello generally, & absolutely no interest in him sexually. i also can't really picture Mello's interest in L being sexual in nature, but Near is sitting there watching the fawning and hero worship on the verge of popping a blood vessel about it. imo. imqho. also, L finds this fun, is vaguely charmed by Near's hatred and bloodlust toward him, and possibly occasionally exacerbates the tension on purpose when he's bored. BYE

15. i carried you to the car and drove you home but you weren't making any sense.

Kira wakes, hair tangled around her face, sweat dripping down her buzzing skin. She feels like she's sixteen and unable to control her powers again. Lydia opens her eyes, the barest of flash of fear.

Kira's gut churns. She's almost electrocuted Lydia before.

She's climbing out of bed, when fingers brush her arm.

"It was a nightmare."

Kira breathes. It was. "We lived worse than nightmares."

"Mmmm. More than once. Which one?"

Kira takes another breath, her skin still too tight with power. "Araya."

"I helped you to the car that day," Lydia murmurs. "I was never afraid. I'm not afraid."

"You were," Kira answers. "For just a moment." She pauses. Tries to ground herself. The energy raises the hairs on her arms. "You should be. I'm dangerous."

Lydia smiles. Runs a hand along Kira's arm. Sparks fizzle at her fingertips. "So am I."
