Cultural Conscious African Edition

I need some good country music recommendations. Other than Eric Church, and a few random songs here and there I've kind of stopped listening. I've rediscovered some Kip Moore stuff and thats good but most mainstream stuff just doesn't do it. Appreciate any general direction you can give me!

Okay it’s hard for me to really recommend something without knowing more about your specific taste and without knowing how much you know about the independent scene. But I’ll just list some things and you can pick and choose from there!

I’ll start with the Texas scene.

The biggest name out of Texas is Cody Johnson. Rodeo cowboy turned country singer. His music is country, but not real twangy. And it rocks. It’s made for energetic shows. (A lot of the Texas country music scene is built around live performances for honkytonks or rodeos)

Flatland Cavalry is one of my favorite bands. Very fiddle heavy. They kind of have a slogan where they describe their music as “easy on the ears, heavy on the heart” which is very accurate. I became hooked on them the instant I heard them

Following that train of thought, you might enjoy The Panhandlers album, which is a Texas super group, one member being a member of flatland cavalry.

Cody Jinks is an artist with both rock and country music. So there should be something in there that you like. A lot of his music lyrically deals with the battle between light and dark, good and evil. “I got an Angel on my shoulder, but I got the devil too” he sings.

Randall King is just solid country music. He gets a lot of comparisons to George Strait. You can definitely hear his own influences like Keith Whitley or Merle Haggard in his songs (especially his early stuff). His latest releases lean very heavily into the 90s honkytonk sound.

Now I’m gonna go over to Appalachian music.

Sierra Ferrell just released her debut album this last year and I very quickly became obsessed with it. I remember reading once in an article where they referred to her music as “jazz-inflected bluegrass” which is probably the best way to describe her music. That album she released is flawless.

Of course I have to mention Tyler Childers. He’s a storyteller from Kentucky. And that sentence right there basically sums up his music.

Sturgill Simpson is another leader of this sound. Some of his songs like Life Ain’t Fair And The World Is Mean is almost reminiscent of Waylon Jennings. Seriously, listen to this live version of that song. It’s even better than the studio version.

I’m gonna throw The Marfa Tapes out there too. It’s a collab between Miranda Lambert, Jon Randall, and Jack Ingram. They sat down in Texas and recorded some songs the three of them wrote together with little to no production. So the recording quality is lower, you can hear the chatter between songs, and all the mistakes like forgotten lyrics or out of tune guitars is all left in. That’s really the charm of this album. It is definitely a songwriters album that drops you in the middle of Texas with them.

I gotta recommend Turnpike Troubadours, which are probably the biggest red dirt band in recent years. There ain’t a bad song they’ve ever recorded. Four of my top five songs this last year on Spotify were turnpike troubadours songs lol.

Jason Isbell is in the Americana movement and he’s probably one of the best songwriters I’ve ever heard. So if you’re into that, perhaps you can check him out.

Granted, I’m listing most of these off the top of my head. I’m just trynna list the biggest names/people I stand by the most, but hopefully some of these artists you click with, and from there you can hopefully find other related artists you enjoy. Texas country is its own industry with its own charts and awards. It’s definitely something worth following. And Appalachian music is thriving as well. That’s more roots country if that is what you like.

If I knew more about your music taste I could list some other artists specifically to that taste, but for now I’m just listing the biggest artists of the independent scene.

So the burning question is: is there a double agent in the main Hitman four? (47, Diana, Lucas, Olivia) Possible answers I’ve considered (read more cause I went on forever)

There is no double agent, and The Constant/Arthur Edwards is trying to seed doubt in everyone’s minds to drive them apart and keep them from working as a coherent team. (kip rating of likelihood as of now: pretty high! there could even be secrets being kept among the team from each other which might make the rifts even worse, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re still on the same team and Eds is trying to ruin it-- he’s a cunning dude) Lucas is the double agent, because - He’s not thinking clearly and blinded by his own goals and quest for revenge, and has decided that working with Edwards to end up as part of the “new providence” would be the best path (kip rating of likelihood as of now: not very high) - The Constant is holding him hostage in a way, using some sort of pressure point to make Lucas do his bidding, as eluded to by the cutscene after Sapienza when Lucas obtains the second Providence key (kip rating of likelihood as of now: a little more probable, but still not very high?) - When Lucas escaped the institute back in the day, Edwards found him and helped him but pressures him to do his bidding (kip rating of likelihood as of now: intriguing, but very flawed-- why go through all the trouble to meet with 47 and eliminate Janus? unless its an even grander plan than we know, and lucas is trying to break away from The Constant’s control somehow? but still, intriguing but not likely imo with the info we have, tho a fic about this would be fun) - He doesn’t want 47 to be distracted by the fact that Edwards is missing and instead focus on destroying the partners (kip rating of likelihood as of now: possible, but flawed-- unless Lucas is really that blindly driven to destroy the partners, he should know that Edwards has somehow stripped them of their money and identities, and would want to focus on taking him down instead, in theory)

Diana is the double agent, because - She’s on the rocks with the choices 47 is making, and we know she’s not afraid to make choices for him when she knows he won’t do it (see: the ending of blood money)-- maybe she saw him deciding to work with Lucas as a poor choice and after talking with Edwards on the boat, felt swayed enough for some reason to let him go and frame Lucas? (kip rating of likelihood as of now: intriguing but not likely-- I’m not sure Diana would make this brash a decision, and we don’t have enough information to clearly see motives she would even have to do this. I think she’s rather loyal to 47 as well, though her loyalty to him could be cause for a motivation to be a double agent, if she can manage to wrap her logic a certain way. But still, hard to picture as of now with the lore we have.)

Bonus evidence about character motivations I just think is neat: - I’ve talked about this before, but Lucas institutes a ‘no unnecessary deaths’ rule in the militia-- one that goes so far that the Delgados go to insane lengths to release a man they got info from, which Lucas checks up on (you can hear this conversation by eavesdropping in the Delgado office-- Lucas has voiced lines on a phone call with him), and one Alma openly complains about. She calls him ‘squeamish about collateral damage’. However, Lucas also admits to Diana he’s willing to work with shady people and criminals to reach his higher goal. He also talks about the weight things have on his conscience, and seems genuinely taken aback/grieved when he realizes he and 47 had a hand in killing Diana’s parents. Unless this is all an elaborate act, I feel like this is evidence that Lucas is trying to justify and atone for his actions to take down Providence-- and he’s willing to reach that goal however he can, which makes the idea of him working with Edwards shakey right now, with the lore we currently have. This could quickly change! akjhdkjahdf

- Edwards seems genuinely baffled by Lucas’ actions! Unless this is a ruse, of course. Spies and all that. You can overhear these conversations on Sgail in his private area

- On that note, there are reoccurring characters via phone convos! We never hear them, but other characters talk to them. The only ones I’m certain of at the moment is that Yuki and Edwards both call the same Providence contact. I would not be surprised to see them later. - I think this is mostly known, but Olivia met Lucas when she was 7! It was in Sierra Leonne-- where Edwards mentions Lucas did mercenary work. Chances are high that they met during Civil War there-- where it’s very possible, but in no way confirmed, that Olivia could have been a child soldier. The canon aspects of this are that they were both there, and Olivia was 7. The rest is conjecture based upon the fact that child soldiers were unfortunately frequent, to my understanding, Olivia is the only militia member to have direct, frequent, and face to face contact with Lucas, as well as KNOWING HIS NAME, which no other militia member knows-- she’s the only member of the militia to remain after it disbands, she has no fear whatsoever talking back to Lucas, and he seems to talk to her in a fatherly/parental way at times. Conclusion: Olivia is his daughter figure :’) Second conclusion: this has a high probability of breaking my heart  - I have a sneaking suspicion we might have to shoot Lucas. 7. favorite companions? least favorite companions?

Favourite companions: Pretty much all of them? ED-E is her robot son, Boone has solidarity as a Legion-hating sniper, Arcade and Veronica are kind and caring and Cass is always a ton of fun with trail stories. I headcanon that she felt a bit awkward around Rex at first until she and Veronica scrubbed that Legion Bull off of him (and gave his front half a good wash, his back half a good-tune up, and a treat for being such a good boy too); it’s not exactly symbol she reacts well to. In DLCs, she and Christine form a tight bond, and she also becomes good friends with Chalk and Cloud.

Least favourite companions: DEAN DOMINO also Joshua Graham since that’s just a huuuuge thing. For the main game, she gets along well with Raul in general but has fought with him at least once about whether the Legion “keeps the roads safe.” Her interactions with Lily can also be kinda bittersweet since it does make her think of her own grandmother, way back when.

11. when, why and how did they become a courier? how long did they remain a courier before benny shot them?

In vague, non-age-specific terms: Jane became a courier pretty young; after the loss of the Mothers she got picked up by a caravan and started tagging along with them for survival, doing odd jobs for her keep and swapping over occasionally at big stops. An older caravan guard took pity on her and became a sort of mentor, teaching her how to shoot.

Although she lived as a caravaneer for some time, the structure felt confining - she was always curious, wanting to poke her nose into crumbling ruins, see what was over the far mountains rather than the same old road. For a while, she struck out on her own, living mostly off the land, whetting her curiosity and never staying in one place for long. Some part of her was always searching for a home, something to replace what she’d lost, and never finding it, always moving on. Sometimes, she’d stop in a place and people’d ask her if she was going a certain way, give her a letter to deliver, or a parcel, and some caps. Seemed like a good idea to make a bit of money doing what she was already doing anyway, and after a bit of time as a freelancer she found herself in a town big enough to have a local branch of the Mojave Express. Took contracts as she pleased, got money for her wanderings. She’d been years at it before the chip job took her through Goodsprings.

31. where do they usually sleep? do they have more than one home location? do they live with any other people?

Pre-game, she mostly slept outdoors, bedding down wherever was convenient. If she happened to be stopping at a town, or a caravaner’s kip, she’d take the cheapest beds she could; she can sleep under pretty much any conditions. Early game, she mostly kept this up, and to a certain extent throughout: when she’s on the move, she’ll sleep wherever. Very early game she mainly stayed around Goodsprings and the nearby locations, still kind of in recovery; Doc Mitchell kindly let her stay on, for a bit.

She took advantage of the Lucky 38 suite offer at first; no reason to say no to a free bed, and there were enough rooms to give her friends a place to stay in Vegas too. It was a good enough place to get some rest and store her stuff for a time.

Until the Sierra Madre. After that, the Lucky 38 seemed...sinister. Too familiar. A silent casino, full of ghosts of the past. Brought up too many memories to sleep properly. So she moved her stuff out, made her main base a cosy abandoned ranch, way south of the city, with a well and some plants still hanging on; she’d bunked down there a time or two before. When in Vegas, she started crashing at the Kings’ place instead, or buying a room at the Atomic Wrangler, although her friends still make use of the Lucky 38 sometimes, and near the endgame they do get back together there for Intense Strategy Sessions.

Her favourite season is spring when the desert is in bloom; she’s particularly fond of cactus flowers and globe mallow!

Oh my God. I can not have any form of carbonation due to a surgery I had, and tbh I never liked soda even before so y’all about to get a whole lot...blame Xan! I also just cannot stand Kool-Aid or Yoohoo sooooo those are getting added.

Root Beer- Who’s your favorite author?

- I’m a big fan of Adam Silvera and Maggie Thrash. They are phenomenal writers and I was lucky enough to meet them at a conference last year and get to talk to them a bit about helping LGBT youth. 

Coca-Cola- What’s your full name?

- Nope. Megan is all you’re getting. I hate my middle name with a burning and fiery passion. It is the absolute worst. Can I just give you some nicknames? @loser-hobbs calls me Sugarplum and @ayyyymichele calls me Megatron, and they are my favorite nicknames ever. 

Pepsi- What’s your favorite song?

- Sway by Blue October is currently my favorite. Kip got me hooked on it as a Reddie song, and honestly I just want my life to make me happy and feel like this song does.

Cream Soda- What is your relationship with your parents like?

- I am super close with my mom, she pretty much raised my sister and I on her own and I tell her *almost* everything. The past year and a half of my life has been a complete hell and I wouldn’t have made it through if it weren’t for my mom. My dad and I’s relationship is...interesting. We are closer now then we used to be, again it factors into how rough my life has been, and going to Orioles games with him is actually one of my favorite things to do now.

Orange Soda- Dream date?

- Something different and/or adventurous. Something like zip lining, museum hopping, or like a murder mystery game are so much more exciting than just dinner and a movie. Cut the whole small talk and go right into real conversations as well. 

Grape Soda- Favorite animal?

- Mmmm bears, I guess. I love all animals, but my nickname from birth has been Miss Meggie Bear. My dad took one look at me when I was bor and called me Miss Bear, not sure if thats a compliment. 

Sprite- Any pets?

- I have my furry baby Pippa Louise who is really more of an alien than a dog, but she is my world. Y’all don’t even understand! I want to be a better person so I can be a better mom for her.

- 5′9″

- Blue

- It’s currently a dark burgundy/purple but that needs to change as soon as possible. It’s naturally blonde.

- I am a Ravenclaw through and through, and the last time I took a faction quiz I was divergent.

- When I took the official Pottermore I got a...Polecat. It’s somehow related to a weasel I believe, and I have no idea what it symbolizes or means.

- “Stay Gold” from The Outsiders. But I’ve also really been feeling the lyrics “And If I fly or if I fall, Least I can say I gave it all, And If I fly or if I fall, I'm on my way, I'm on my way” from RuPaul’s Sissy That Walk recently too.

Dr. Pepper- What’s your favorite school subject/topic to learn about?

- I liked all subjects, to be honest I just really like being a student. Which is great since I’m about to go back to get a different degree. I think that science is probably my favorite, again this is good because I am going to be a nurse.

Kool-Aid- What is something that makes you smile?

- When people talk about things that are super important to them. So whether that be a certain someone telling me all about Danny Sexbang and the other Game Grumps or getting previews or projects that people are working on, it makes me smile. I just like supporting people, okay?!?!?!

Yoo-Hoo- Do you think that there is a God

- I believe there is a higher being, but I’m just questioning exactly what I believe in. I’m uncomfortable with labels right now.

“BIANCA!”

“Hang on!” Bee begs the fists banging on her door – probably about ten, if Lily Camryn roped the younger Sierra-Vo’s into it, too. “I can’t find something cute!”

The door opens a crack, and Casper barely gets their face in before all five spill onto Bianca’s floor, giggling and yelling at each other to get off of me!

“Bee,” Lily Camryn says while the younger kids bicker, “You look great.”

Bianca pouts. “But I wore this to Poppi’s birthday,” she whines.

“So you can’t wear it again?” Lily Camryn smooths the polka-dotted cardigan down. “No one’s gonna care!”

Before Bee can say anything else, Lily Camryn has their arms looped together and is pulling her into the hallway.

“What we do care about is that you blow out these candles!”

Upon seeing her, all the adults clustered around the cake start singing. Bianca has half a mind to retreat back to her room…but then again, everyone is so happy to see her…

Whatever, she finally decides, taking her place next to the cake. I’m turning into a teen today! I’ll be getting new clothes any minute now!

And that’s exactly what she wishes for as the song ends and the candles go out.
