The Real Anime Awards of 2023

Every year, I like to make my own anime meme awards for the important categories we really care about. Because who cares about best animation or anime of the year when we could find out who the biggest chad is?

Karasuno Hair Salon!AU headcanons

I went to get a haircut a while ago and my hairdresser had silver hair like Suga's and it inspired this whole mess. Also, I don't know much about the hair salon business so take this with a huge chunk of salt?? Mostly assessing based of the qualities of the characters. Do not look too closely because there will be gaps.

Characters: All of your Karasuno volleyball team favourites + Yachi, Kiyoko, Ukai, Takeda

Sawamura Daichi

He takes on a senior/ manager role, has plenty of experience under his belt.

Makes small talk with the customer

Knows the regulars by names

Assigns shifts

Trains the rest of the staffs and is fairly good at all the roles

Covers whoever who can't make it

Used to give his siblings haircuts while they were growing up

I feel like he'd be open to going around to elderly homes and giving them free haircuts

Man's a guy who serves the community!!

Sugawara Koushi

He is so loved by all grandmamas and children.

Man can butter up ANYONE

and he lays it on thick

He's respectful, cheerful, and a good yapper

Children thinks he's kind and friendly

Generally pleasant guy

Will bribe children with candy so they stay still

Azumane Asahi

He knows the way he looks may scare kiddos away, so he uses his long hair to his advantage and styles it with lil' butterfly clips, pigtails and other accessories.

Has won a couple of hairdressing awards

Mostly the go-to person for more experimental styles

Has contacts in the modelling and fashion department which brings in a ton of money for the salon

The less shy children would go up to him and demands he lifts them like a lil' plane

He will never say no

Man makes a mean matcha though

Shimizu Kiyoko

Handles the makeup and photography should anyone come in with needs for bridal makeup services and other events.

Works closely with Asahi

Sometimes, they'll be out in the city together for side quests

She's a woman of many talents so pre-booking required!!!

Has a popular Instagram account dedicated to the bridal looks, mostly spread through word-of-mouth

Ennoshita Chikara

The hair salon prides themselves on incredible service as how they were trained under Ukai Sr.. So expect a nice lil drink while getting your next hairdo. The person behind the delicious coffee? Ennoshita.

Personally handles the coffee stock and orders

Has a good working relationship with the roasteries in town

Ensures each cup of coffee will brighten up your day

Does some cute doodles sometimes on the cups

WILL NOT GIVE OUT PHONE NUMBERS!! MAN'S KEEPING IT PROFESSIONAL

Cakes and other drinks are served too

Kinoshita Hisashi

Don't tell me this guy isn't the biggest gossip in this place. He easily encourages his customers to talk more, and is good at giving advice and reacting in an affirming way.

Him and Suga is always on top with the neighbourhood tea

He isn't a snitch but will act dumb about the drama

Narita Kazuhito

He plays a regular hairstylist role but helps out with Kageyama at the hairwashing station on busier days.

Has an adaptable personality so Daichi pairs him with new customers to have a feel for their personality

Tanaka Ryuunosuke

What many don't know about him is that he is a rather creative and artistic guy.

Paints nails and does incredible nail art

Can get eerily focused unlike his usual loud self

Practices new skills on Kiyoko (HIS WIFE!!)

Kiyoko ofc gets compliments and directs them to her incredible husband

And he recommends his WIFE'S makeup and photography services

SUCH A COUPLE

BUSINESS IS BOOMING

Will also rock some sick nail designs, man does not care

The team also enjoy getting their nails done by him

When you need a dye job, he's the man.

Gets very excited when someone needs his services

Will talk you through the process, how to care for your new hair, and recommends the right shade for your skin etc

Does a very thorough job in explaining it all

Has a little steppy stool

I feel like he will change that dyed part of his hair quite often. Different colours. Same part. It's kinda funny.

Is very patient throughout the process

Will send a complimentary cake your way as a thank you for the many hours it takes

Hinata Shouyou

Makes light conversation with the regulars when he gives them a haircut.

Daichi also sends new customers his way since Hinata has a certain knack of interpreting someone's requests

Loves it when customers give him free reign

Usually uses that opportunity to film those blind pick challenges

Nails it usually

Kageyama Tobio

King of scalp massages

Gives a killer scalp massage

And a neck massage

Is very attentive to his customers and will always ask if the pressure is too hard or too soft

Man's also turning to Asahi for advice on creating the next big look

Yamaguchi Tadashi

Apprentice under Ennoshita and handles social media with Yachi

Appears in their TikToks

Likes making different latte art designs. His current go to is a bear since it appeals to everyone. The peacock is a challenge though.

Brainstorms a lot of the content ideas with Yachi, but he's usually the face of it

Has a strong online presence though despite being a little shy in real life

Occasionally, he goes to Suga to ask for tips and learns from him. Suga's more than willing to share his knowledge!

Tsukishima Kei

I see him as taking this only as a part-time job though just for the money.

I see him working together with Daichi to go around giving free haircut to the community centres

He's being paid for it and that's fine by him

It's not the ideal part-time job but it's near his college, pays decently and fits his schedule

His best friend works there and enjoys it, so that's a little bit of a bonus too

I can imagine his brother being the type to be quite fond of caring for the community, so it rubs off on him a bit too

Daichi is understanding of his frank personality. In the end, it really is just a job so no big deal.

Yachi Hitoka

Handles marketing and social media.

It started as a kind deed to help the small business grow but ended up liking the team and stayed on.

Is definitely why they're blowing up online

Usually films the TikToks but plans the content with Yamaguchi

Very on trend, very quick on trends

Also knows who what the people want to see

Ukai Kenshin

Runs his mother's store but spreads the word about the hair salon.

His grandfather started hair salon, and when his dad married, his dad didn't realise that tending to the farm would be incredibly demanding and it was impossible to hold on to both businesses.

The hair salon went to his uncle for a while until he fell ill.

Somehow it fell into the hands of the Takeda family.

Completely entrusts it to the new team to run it.

Is very fond of the new team.

Takeda Ittetsu

He grew up going to the hair salon.

His grandfather used to hang out there with Ukai Sr. all the time.

They'd sit outside and have a smoke, next to lil Takeda who would be doing his homework.

Has many good memories with his grandfather at that hair salon.

So when it was struggling, he struck a deal to run it instead.

Now he's out building opportunities for them, getting them signed on with new businesses and partnerships.

He has a meeting with Shiseido next week.

Kari-chan, what are your some of your least favorite Rider and Sentai characters as of now?

I'm already assuming Buffa, Neon's sperm and egg donors (Your own words not mine) are probably up there when it comes to least favorites.

For favorite Rider... I think you can guess who it is, considering I've been simping for him for a solid two years now. Kadota Hiromi is the one true Kamen Rider Demons who owns my heart and soul

I also adore Hidari Shoutaro, who is still my favorite main Rider to date. Banjou Ryuuga is my favorite secondary, and of course for the tertiary it's the one and only lightning hedgehog swordsman, Fukamiya Kento. For the ladies, it's Igarashi Sakura.

For least favorite... pretty much anyone I've tagged "can go die in a ditch" is there 😂 So far there's Amatsu Gai, George Karizaki (unpopular opinion I know), Geryon... Oh, and can't forget about Evolt, and Dan Kuroto, nasty pieces of work they are.

For Buffabutt, I would be mostly indifferent to him if not for his fanatics who act like he's done nothing wrong. Neon's sperm and egg donors are also rather benign compared to, say, the Shijima siblings' sperm donor, or even the Sonozaki family in W.

As for Sentai... honestly I haven't met a Ranger I hate, though obviously I have my favorites. Souji from Kyouryuger, Hiromu from GoBusters, Takeru from Shinkenger, basically anyone played by Ayumi Kinoshita and Nao Nagasawa... lol.

But honestly idk Sentai characters don't seem to stando out as much to me compared to Rider ones... not sure why, really.

As for the characters I dislike... well I haven't made a secret of how annoying I find Takaharu and Lucky, and the latter specifically was what made me give up on Sentai for a while. I just find them so annoying and grating on the nerves.

I have to ask, are there any other lil background Noya highlights you’d like to remind me of? I remember the popsicles one it is pure GOLD!

And I know you said you barely scratched the surface with your Noya talks, I excitedly invite you to make this as long as physically possible! Just about really any Noya highlights you have whether it’s background moments, expressions, his lil jumps of joy (!!), his mind blowing receives, his teaching moments, his friendship moments, etc. I want to hear it ALL.

Oh my gosh for real?? Like seriously as long as possible??? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! :D

Okay you asked for it so I’m not gonna feel bad and you can read it if you want and if not that’s okay too. :)

Oh, there’s so much! I don’t even know where to begin!! I guess I’ll start with the little background moment things and go from there XD

Background Moments

Fair warning, I might not have an episode or season for all of these, but if I do I’ll make sure to include it :)

• Okay so there’s a scene shot from outside the gym, I think focusing on Hinata and Kageyama but I could be wrong, and in the door behind them you can see Tanaka running by with Noya on his shoulders like an airplane.

• There’s another scene where Tanaka just picks Noya up under the arms like he’s a cat and they both have tears streaming down their faces because of (I think) a speech?

• Then there’s this little gem

Honestly I think Noya just likes being tall XD The amount of times he just does handstands off of people is crazy, but it’s also adorable!

• As a background detail, he yells at someone who asks Tsukki “are you gonna eat that” about how Tsukki needs to eat all the food on his plate

• When he had to break down and study so he could go to Tokyo, he and Tanaka can be seen getting tutored by Suga in the club room

• Another little detail— When the second years are all chilling at Tanaka’s house, Noya is in regular clothes instead of his uniform, whereas Ennoshita, Kinoshita, and Narita are still in school clothes.

• As an aside to go along with that, Noya routinely calls Saeko “Saeko-nēsan” and she calls him “Yū” :) Also he typically calls Tanaka “Ryu”

• Honestly his dynamic with the Tanaka siblings as a whole is just so sweet. I also really love when the team is on the bus home and he and Tanaka are shown having fallen asleep on each other.

• At the barbecue in the training camp arc, there’s at least one scene (I think there are more) where all you can see of Noya is the top of his hair XD

• During the season 3 credits Noya is essentially flying

• In episode 2 of season 3, when they start the second set, Noya yells as the whistle blows.

Non-intense but not background moments

• He’s almost always part of the court-side cheering squad and gets really into it

• There’s the scene somewhere in season 1 after Hinata and Kageyama pull off a quick where he gives them both hair ruffles

• At the very beginning of episode 4 from season 3 he gives Tsukki this little grin (which Tsukki doesn’t appreciate, but it’s fine)

• Episode 10 of Season 3, after they win, Noya makes a beeline for Tsukki and tackles him. He gets to Tsukki before even Yamaguchi does!

• Also 3:10, Noya helps Kageyama drag a practically-dead-on-his-feet Hinata over to line up

• He does a double rolling thunder in 4:2 and runs over Tanaka, getting them both yelled at XD

• In 4:5 Noya is running serve drills :)

• In 4:13 and 4:16 Noya is sleeping during the second year gossip-sesh :)

• Also in 4:13 during the planning meeting, Noya and Hinata are sitting next to each other and they both get really excited and Noya gets Tanaka’s shark teeth XD

I’m sure there are more but I can’t remember them off the top of my head right now.

Expression specifics

• This isn’t a specific scene, but a lot of the time he can be seen in the background in “low-quality” mode going either >:c or c: and I think it’s cute

• One of my favorites is in Season 1 episodes 7-8, right after he receives Kageyama’s serve. In episode 7 he’s got a very hot-shot feel to his expression after he receives (combined with the immediately following “low-quality” feral gremlin stance and c:< expression), whereas in episode 8 that same ‘hot-shot’ expression is drawn to be much more mellow and cute, like a >:3

• Ooh! This one is in season 1 episodes 20, and it’s right after the blep. I think his little grin right after receiving the ball is adorable :)

• Then there’s this one

Right after seeing Oikawa’s real serve!

• I didn’t really know where to put this, but expressions and personality aside, I find him cute in general! I think he has pretty eyes and I love his hair, both spiked up and when we get those snippets of hair-down Noya!

Dynamic with Hinata (ft. Tanaka)

So, back in season 1 before they ever got started on the tournaments, we had the whole “senpai” scene. That was probably my biggest turning point as far as my opinion on Noya goes, but there are two more really good little things that stick out to me from that episode. The first is when they’re in the gym and Hinata expresses his desire to be the ace. Noya’s first reaction is “The ace? With your height?” and you can see Hinata visibly deflate and feel discouraged. Immediately after Noya pats him on the shoulder and, with a big grin, says “I like you! You want to be the ace because it’s cool, right? Do it, do it!” The second takes place a little later in the same thing. Noya asks Hinata what his specialty is, and Hinata very quietly replies “decoy.” Noya’s reaction there is to ask “Why do you say it which such a lack of confidence?”. When Hinata replies that it’s because it doesn’t sound cool, Noya says “Who cares how it sounds? If a spiker scored because of you, then your position is just as important.” That part has always stuck with me, both personally, and as a great start to his and Hinata’s dynamic.

Just like Tanaka, Noya very easily falls into that older brother role for Hinata, but a little to the left. I’m not entirely certain how to explain it, but Tanaka seems to take on a more mature and responsible big brother role despite the fact that he’s Tanaka (/affectionate), whereas Noya is more of the enabling type and tends to share a brain cell with Hinata part of the time. Which is incredibly funny to me because Noya and Tanaka act so much alike, and Hinata tends to mimic them, so it’s like they all share a brain cell as a trio. Yet, when you separate the trio into all three duos, they have very different dynamics. Most concise way I can think of to put it— Yachi: “Hinata got into a fight with Kageyama!” Tanaka: *runs over to break up the fight and scolds them* VS Yachi: “Hinata got into a fight with Kageyama!” Noya: “Is he winning?” I love Noya to death but I’m very glad Yachi went and got Tanaka to handle the matter because my gut tells me Noya would not have done a single thing XD For further evidence that Noya’s an enabler, I direct your attention to season 4 when Hinata crashes the training camp. When the gang first gets the news in 4:1, the rest of the team (bar Tanaka, who is laughing his head off) are all like “What the heck Hinata?” And then there’s Noya, who is all proud like “Nice going Shoyo!” And then in 4:2 we’ve got a small scene of Tanaka and Hinata. Tanaka’s reaction is to comment on how much trouble Hinata is in, say “you do suck a lot so at least learn something while you’re there” and then pat him on the back with a “Don’t panic too much.” And then there’s Noya.

Noya zooms over with his arms in the air, shouting Hinata’s name, and he just asks how the camp is going. No comment on how Hinata’s in trouble, shouldn’t have done that, etc. And when Hinata tells him he just gets excited about it with him! It’s endearing but also he really shouldn’t be encouraging this XD And then Hinata comes back from being at the training camp and Noya again runs over with his arms up, shouting Hinata’s name. And when Suga and Tanaka are commiserating over the fact that Kageyama and Hinata started fighting again immediately, Noya is just like “yeah, that’s kinda what they do?” I rest my case. Noya is an enabler and it’s hilarious XD

They tend to think a lot alike! Both communicate through sound effects, they both are extremely bouncy and very loud, they both love Noya’s rolling thunder, and they tend to get excited over the same things. Then there’s also the scene at the end of season 2 where with no words exchanged they simultaneously charge and tackle hug their teammates :) I feel like they’re kind of on a separate brainwave than everyone else, and although their own waves aren’t exact matches they do line up frequently.

Another thing I love, although a small detail, is that Noya gets to use Hinata’s first name and it’s without an honorific. At all. To Noya he’s just “Shoyo” and in return Hinata calls him “Noya-san.”

The other thing I really want to get into with their dynamic is also from Season 4, and it’s the point when Hinata starts really making an effort in receiving. Noya is the first one to pick up on it right as it starts in episode 11. Everybody else thinks it’s a fluke. But Noya knows better. He can tell that Hinata’s positioning was intentional and he’s proud! Then we have episode 14. (By the way Noya’s expressions for this scene are also very adorable). Hinata moves into the path of the ball and we switch from watching him to watching Noya, who’s poking his tongue out of the corner of his mouth and leaning forward in anticipation. And then Hinata correctly positions himself for the receive but doesn’t have his hands/arms in the right place. The reaction of the general population at large is confusion and there are a few mocking him like “use your hands next time!” But then we have Noya, a defensive specialist, for whom something like that would’ve been a piece of cake. And his reaction is to say “Great job getting to the ball, Shoyo!” and look on with a proud little smile. He’s so insanely supportive of Hinata and it feels like he just gets him. And he celebrates the little accomplishments instead of just demanding better. He’s the kind of person I’d want teaching me how to do things, y’know? And I love that he’s that way for Hinata.

Okay, last thing I’m gonna get into:

Traits I Admire

(Note: this next section moves from “here are scenes to check out!” into “this is what makes him so special to me personally”)

• Enthusiasm - Though it’s a trait he shares with Hinata, the scope of their enthusiasm is completely different. Hinata’s is largely volleyball related with little room for anything else. Noya has an enthusiasm for life in general that is just so infectious and inspiring. He wants to do everything, because everything is exciting to him! It’s just so endearing :) When he gets excited about something, you know because he’s bouncy and loud and grinning like a maniac. And I’m the same way and I get really embarrassed about it, so seeing it portrayed in a fictional character I love is just so… validating? Because it’s treated as something good more often than not. There are the occasional comments about how he’s childish, but by and large Haikyu!! treats Noya’s way of expressing his excitement and joy as something that makes him endearing. At least that’s the way it comes off to me. Like you’re supposed to see him and Hinata being all bouncy and loud and just so excited and you’re supposed to go “aww :) look at them.” And that’s so important to me. It reminds me that it’s okay to get excited about things. I don’t have to pretend to be “totally normal about X”, I can be as un-normally excited as I want! The right people will find it endearing.

• Determination - This boy is stubborn in the best way possible, so I’m choosing to call it determination instead of stubbornness. He was determined that he wasn’t playing unless Asahi came back. He was determined while on suspension to keep improving. He was determined to get the hang of Ushijima’s spikes, and determined to learn overhand receives, and he was determined to come out on top against Atsumu when he struggled to receive Atsumu’s serves. To the point that he got disappointed when Atsumu missed and rotated off of serving. There it not a single bone in his body that will let him give up when he’s made up his mind.

• Unabashedly him - He’s so confident in himself and who he is and what he does that he doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. He is Nishinoya Yū, and if you don’t like that, well, that sounds like a you problem, doesn’t it? He’s so confident that he helps other people build their confidence, like Hinata and Asahi! As someone who struggles with self-confidence, I wish I could be more like him in that respect. I wish I felt confident enough to be unashamed of myself, and who I am, and my interests, and the things I don’t like, and all the things that make me, me. It’s easier on here because we’re all weird together, y’know? And being weird is treated as a good thing. Nobody looks at me and goes “you watch anime?” (/derogatory), or “Wow. That’s a violent show.” or “isn’t that for little kids?” or any number of other judgmental things. I don’t feel like I can freely share my interests offline without being judged (bar a few select people who are chill and just go “huh. Okay.”), so I really admire Noya’s ability to go “I am who I am, and if you don’t like that, too bad. Deal with it.”

My favorite characters (and comfort characters) tend to come in one of two types. • The quiet super smart nerdy one who may or may not follow the rules but knows lots of things and is generally a support role but also can and will kick your butt if they so desire. Or • Loud and chaotic comedic relief with one (1) brain cell who also falls into a support role but in a completely different way. Also can and will kick your butt if desired. And for a while I struggled to realize what it was that drew me to the second type, because the first one is more often than not the character I go for in any show. (My comfort character list is not indicative of this because it’s 4/3, but as far as enjoying shows and movies in general? My favorites are almost always the nerds. I like a guy with brains.) They’re the kind I relate to the most. I was always the “smart kid” growing up. Like literally that was my label in my Youth Group. I was the smart kid who was weird and a loner and liked to read for fun and generally faded into the background until lesson time. And outside of Youth Group I was always a perfectionist and I loved learning about all sorts of things. I was quiet. I did well in school. I was ALWAYS reading. To put it in the best way I can think of, I’ve always been a TMNT 2012 Donnie minus the stalker tendencies, and exchanging the fixation on science for a fixation on Batman (or whatever else I’m into at a given time.) But doing some thinking about Nishinoya and why exactly he’s such a comfort character to me has let me realize that I like the second type because they’re all unafraid to take up space and be themselves and live their lives to fullest and love hard and be excited and laugh loudly, even at the risk of other people not liking them or calling them childish. And deep down inside, I want to be that way too.

So I guess in summary, I love Noya so much because his character really speaks to me. He may not have a huge character arc, but he plays right into some of my favorite tropes/archetypes, he’s cute, he’s got a big heart, he inspires me, and he helps me be a bit kinder to myself because if I adore him for who he is, why shouldn’t I also love those traits in myself?

Anyways. That got kinda sappy towards the end but it’s true, so I’m gonna leave it.

TLDR: I love Noya so so so much. He’s an all around good-guy for the most part, he’s adorable, and he’s a big comfort character for me.

A/N: Jumped the queue a bit because I wanted to post this on Atsumu's birthday. Which, as you can see, I failed to do spectacularly. Real life has been a bit hectic so I haven't gotten around to writing much but I'm so glad to finally be putting up something.

Ennoshita Chikara

You often wonder if there is anything that Ennoshita Chikara isn't good at.

Studies? Sports? Creativity? Personality? Looks? You name it, he excels in it.

His recent venture into writing and directing short films has brought about a rapid increase in his popularity as his classmates try to talk him up so that they can grab a role in one of his films.

A role. In his film. Something that he has given to all his close friends.

Except you.

Hell, he has even given Natsu and Saeko, his friends' siblings, important roles in his films.

But you? His best friend? A big fat nada.

He has never even asked you if you want to act. The closest you have come to being a part of his films is when you help the actors with their dialogue rehearsals or sub in for someone who is absent.

Is it because he doesn't think you're pretty enough? Or maybe you performed so poorly at the rehearsals that he thinks you lack the talent for it.

This is a worry that eats away at the back of your mind as you watch your best friend scribble away quickly on a piece of paper, his eyebrows scrunched in concentration.

Ennoshita has been calling his next project one of the most important projects of his life and has been working day and night on writing the perfect script. It will be the film where he finally tries his hand at acting.

"So, what's it about?"

"Hmm?" he replies, barely registering your question

"Your script. The story. What is it about?"

He stops scribbling for a second and looks at you.

"It is...well, it is hard to say. I guess you could call it romantic? I am yet to figure out the ending," he says.

"Well, I'm sure it will be great! I can't wait to read the finished product," you say, smiling at him.

He gives you a soft smile in return and gets back to his script.

"Chikara, have you eaten anything today?"

"No, I am almost done with this part. It needs to be-"

"Perfect. Yeah, yeah, I know but you gotta eat!"

"Don't worry, I will. I'm actually grabbing lunch with Takane. I want to ask her to be a part of my film," he says, not looking up from his paper.

Takane? Takane as the lead actress in his first acting venture? Takane who has never even played a side character in any of his films?

Well, truth be told, she is really, extremely, breathtakingly pretty. With someone as handsome as Ennoshita as her love interest, the two of them would make a really gorgeous onscreen pair.

"Oh. Okay, I'll go have lunch with the others then, I guess."

He just nods his head in response.

You head off to have lunch with Kinoshita and Narita.

"Where's Chikara?" Kinoshita asks as you take your seat next to them.

"He won't be joining us, he is having lunch with Takane."

"Huh? Takane? Why?" Kinoshita asks.

"He said he was going to ask her to act in his film."

"What?! So, that's who he likes?!" Kinoshita exclaims and then yelps as Narita elbows him in the rib.

Likes?!

"What do you mean?" you ask Kinoshita, a bad taste forming in your mouth.

"Uh- nothing!" he says but you can clearly sense that he is hiding something. Narita is also shaking his head beside him.

You narrow your eyes at him. "You know I can tell when you are lying. Out with it!"

"Well... it's just... well... you know that this is a romantic film, right?"

"Yeah, so?"

"Well, he wouldn't tell us the name but he said that he was going to ask the girl he likes to play his love interest in the film. A-after confessing to her, of course! He would never do anything shady!"

It is getting harder to swallow your lunch by the second. Thankfully, Narita has swiftly changed the subject and they're now talking about volleyball. He is pretty observant that way and has probably known about your feelings for Ennoshita for a while now. You shoot him a grateful look and he nods knowingly.

He is probably confessing to Takane right at this moment.

You seem to have lost your appetite completely. You simply sit there, idly picking at your lunch with your chopsticks while Kinoshita talks about this new serve he has been practicing.

Just imagining Ennoshita with someone else is making your chest feel like there is a rock on it. What hurts more than that is the thought that you might even lose your best friend.

With his volleyball practices, study sessions and filming sessions, you barely get to spend time together anyway. If he gets a girlfriend on top of that? He will spend all his free time with her.

The thought of losing him entirely...

The bell rings, indicating lunchtime is over. You place the lid back on your barely eaten lunch and walk back to class. Ennoshita walks in a minute later and gives you a smile as he sits on the chair next to you.

"Hey, how was lunch?" you ask him, trying to fake a smile back.

"It was good. She agreed to come onboard almost instantly!" he says.

"Of course, she did. Who wouldn't?" you say, trying to hide the fact that you are tearing up by pretending to search for something in your bag.

"Well, I wasn't sure she would. But I'm happy it all worked out in the end."

"I'm glad things came together the way you wanted them to." At this point, you are straining hard to keep your voice from cracking, "You two will look very good together."

"What?-"

His response is cut short by the arrival of the teacher right then. You spend the entire period blinking back tears. You can feel Ennoshita glancing at you worriedly from time to time but you avoid his gaze and just stare at your book.

You feel a tap on your shoulder and you look to the side to find Ennoshita holding out a bunch of pages towards you. You take them from him and recognize that it is the script of his new movie.

You hide the pages behind your book and silently read the story. It is clearly supposed to be a romantic story and starts off with the hero falling for the heroine. As you progress through the story, you can't help but feel like you know it. You keep on reading until it suddenly dawns on you.

These characters... this story... it is your story!

It is the story of you and Ennoshita! How you met, how you became friends, everything that has happened till now. Some of the events have been twisted and fluffed up a little for the sake of the film but there is no doubt in your mind that this story is about you.

You look at Ennoshita, your mouth wide open in surprise. He is looking at you apprehensively.

The bell rings at that moment again and the teacher and most of the students walk out of the classroom to enjoy the 5 minute break before the next period starts.

"Chikara... this... this story... I-"

"I told you I still need to figure out the ending."

"But... what about Takane?"

He frowns. "What about her?"

"Didn't you ask her to be the heroine of the film?"

"What? No! I said I want her to be a part of the film. But not as an actress. She paints really well so I wanted her to paint the sets we would be using."

Relief floods through you as you realize that this was all just a misunderstanding.

"I know this might be really, extremely cheesy but I wanted to do something special for you. It's also why I haven't asked you to act in any of my other films. I wanted this to be your first one. You have...just been so incredible and I spent a lot of nights wondering how I could show you how much you mean to me. And, well, immortalizing our bond on film seemed like a good idea to me. O-only if you want to, of course!"

You start to tear up again. He pulls his chair closer to you, the apprehension clearly written on his face.

"So?" he asks, his voice almost a whisper, "Does the hero get a happy ending?"

You smile at him and lean towards him so that your foreheads are resting against each other.

"Yes. He gets a very happy ending."

MIYA ATSUMU

Even at a party like this, where you are surrounded by a sea of handsome college boys, your eyes just keep making their way to where Miya Atsumu is.

As you watch him chat happily with who seems like the 200th person tonight, you can't help but wonder how you ever managed to become friends with someone like Atsumu. He seems so in his element here, talking to all these strangers like he's known them forever. Whereas you? You are just standing awkwardly in a corner with a drink in your hand that you are yet to take a sip of.

You blame him for this. You had never wanted to come here in the first place. You know how these college parties always turn out to be. But, how could you have said no when Atsumu had made those puppy eyes at you and begged you to come with him to the party?

"Y/N! Hey! You came! It is so nice to see you!" a smiling girl approaches you. It is Yumehara Ayumi, the host of today's party and one of the prettiest girls in your college.

You greet her in return and exchange a few pleasantries. The fact that you are standing here alone and feeling awkward does not go unnoticed by her and she drags you away to play truth and dare with her friends. Even though you aren't particularly inclined to play, you feel grateful to her for making efforts to make you feel included. It also does not seem like Atsumu will get free from talking to other people any time soon so you agree to join the group but only as a spectator.

As you follow Ayumi, Atsumu looks at you and smiles when he sees you've found someone to talk to. He winks at you and goes back to talking to his friend.

The game starts and it goes as one would expect it to, full of insanely inappropriate questions and embarrassing dares that make you feel thankful that you're just spectating and not playing. You do learn a lot of interesting facts about your classmates, though.

"Ayu-chan! it's your turn now. What do you pick, truth or dare?"

"Dare," Ayumi smiles and winks at her friend. The friend's face lights up with a knowing smile.

"I dare you to kiss a hot guy of your choice."

Didn't Ayumi have a boyfriend? You wonder as you have seen the two of them around campus until quite recently.

You look around and you spot him standing somewhere behind Atsumu, talking to someone. Watching Ayumi walk in that direction, you are sure that she is going to kiss who you already thought was her boyfriend.

Why did she stop walk- Oh no.

You watch with growing dread as she comes up behind Atsumu and taps him on the shoulder, smiling sweetly at him when he turns to look at her.

"Oh-ho-ho, power move!" Ayumi's friend chirps gleefully beside you.

Your curiosity overtakes your awkwardness and you ask her what she means.

"You know Yoichi? Her ex-boyfriend?"

"Yeah."

"They'd been together for two months and he dumped her just because she said that she thinks Atsumu is hot as a joke."

"Damn, that's rough."

"Yeah, she was heartbroken for a long time. But look at our girl now! She is walking away with that very man in front of Yoichi's eyes. Talk about a power move!" the friend says, proudly.

You watch as Ayumi takes Atsumu's hand in hers and leads him away from the scene. Both of them are smiling at each other as they go inside a room and she closes the door behind her.

Why did they shut the door for a kiss?!

You suddenly feel sick. Even though you have only had half of your drink, your stomach is churning like crazy and you are sure you will throw up any minute.

Thankfully, Ayumi's friend has gone back to playing and you're free to slip away without anyone noticing.

Tears stream down your face as you run back to your hostel room. You knew you should never have come here. You only came because of him. And now, he is with Ayumi, doing God-knows-what behind closed doors. The thought makes your stomach lurch and you bolt straight into the toilet to hurl whatever little you had at the party.

It takes a while before you finally stop throwing up and even longer before you stop crying and shaking. Too exhausted to do anything else, you brush your teeth and get ready for bed.

Your phone starts vibrating in your pocket and you take it out to see that Atsumu is calling you. You just stare at the screen until the call ends. The screen lights up again with text notifications.

Atsumu: Oi! Where are you? I can't find you.

Atsumu: I looked everywhere.

Atsumu: Did you leave?!

You sigh and text him back.

You: I got bored so I left. Don't worry, I'm back in my room.

Atsumu: Come back.

You: No, I'm tired. You enjoy!

Atsumu: Please.

You: Atsumu. I'm tired and I have to finish my assignment before tomorrow's submission.

Atsumu: If you don't come back here, I'll come to your room.

You: ?? It is a girl's hostel, you're not allowed to come here.

Atsumu: I'll find a way.

You: Can we please not do this right now? You know so many people there. It is not like you need me anyway.

Atsumu: Fine.

You put your phone away and wipe your wet cheeks again. You are exhausted but you know sleep won't come easy so you just lie down and stare at your ceiling, your head swirling with thoughts.

Atsumu can be so frustrating at times. Why does he want you there? Especially now that Ayumi...

A sharp knock at the door pulls you from your thoughts.

No. Not at the door. The sound came from the opposite direction.

"Atsumu! What the hell!" you shout as you spot Atsumu hanging off the ledge of your window.

You rush to open the window and he pulls himself up easily.

"This is the first floor! ARE YOU CRAZY?! What is wrong with you?!" you scold him, your heartbeat going a million miles an hour.

"Do you realize how badly you could have hurt yourself- STOP SMILING THIS ISN'T FUNNY- do you even realize how dangerous this was?"

"And you said I don't need you. Who else would scold me like this for being an idiot?" he says, still smiling at you.

His statement gives you pause. Why is he looking at you like that?

"What are you talking about?" you ask, your brows still furrowed with annoyance.

"In your text. You said I don't need you. When, in reality, I only need you," he says, his gaze soft.

Your eyes widen in surprise as his words sink in.

"W-what? Is this a joke?"

"No."

"But- the party- Ayumi..." your voice trails off as his smile turns into a smirk.

He grabs you by your arms and gently pulls you closer to him.

"That, my dear, sweet Y/N, was just an act. She wanted to kiss me in front of her ex to make him jealous. She's my friend so I wanted to help her. But I also didn't want to kiss anyone that wasn't you so I suggested we just make it look like we were up to something."

You cannot believe your ears. Is this real? Or did Miya Atsumu just confess he has feelings for you?

"S-so. You didn't kiss her?"

"No. You're the only one I want to kiss."

Heat starts rising in your cheeks as you voice out what you're thinking.

"Then do it," you whisper, a shy smile lighting up your face.

He chuckles and pulls you in closer.

"Yes, ma'am," he whispers before pressing his soft, warm lips against yours.

the rain was pouring hard that day, seemingly knowing the tragic end between two ill-fated lovers…

well, not really.

"what the hell are you fuckers doing?" you both turned comically to ennoshita who was looking very pissed, narita and kinoshita snickering behind him. nishinoya seemed to have vanished after playing the song, "chasing cars" during your "scene" with tanaka.

"uh, acting?"

"may i remind you," he turned to tanaka who was chuckling as he scratched the back of his neck. "that you have practice in ten minutes."

"and you," ennoshita turned to you, staring you down. "why the hell do you encourage him?"

"but, it's fun!" you answered, shivering a bit from the rain. ennoshita, being the older brother that he is, put his jacket on you, "rudely" (he couldn't) handing you a towel. "we were just recording something and then, ryuu mentioned the vampire diaries and so, there's that."

ennoshita shook his head, and said, "you know what, i don't even care, just get dressed and come to practice."

the two of you saluted, quickly changing. being the sibling of one of karasuno's volleyball club members definitely has its perks, and maybe, it's also because you grew up with one of the regulars, tanaka ryuunosuke.

you and tanaka knew each other from childhood, unbeknownst to your twin sibling (who insists he's older, but it was just three minutes) at the time. you lost contact in middle school when your family moved but rekindled when you moved back. it was a surprise really, more for ennoshita, when he sees you hugging tanaka during your first years despite seeing each other again for the first time.

and a huge part of your life was with ryuu, as you call him, and the rain. walking to the gym, you recounted some of your best memories with him. that day you both jumped on puddles, and the one when you slipped in the mud and he laughed at you so you pulled him with you, and the one time you cried on him when the thunder got too loud one time you were with him.

looking back, you never really understood how important tanaka was for you. but now…? you looked at him as he told you an outrageous story about him and noya. you smiled, laughing with him when you realized…oh fuck, do i like him?

you were silent all throughout practice as you watched them. you weren't really a member but you spent enough time in the gym that they didn't really mind you going. but, today, your eyes would constantly watch tanaka, cheeks warming whenever he looks at you and grins. well...you're definitely fucked.

you snapped back to reality after daichi called for a break, tanaka immediately went to you as his water bottle was conveniently placed beside you. he was panting but he smiled at you before drinking.

your eyes traveled to the sweat that disappeared behind his jersey which he, fortunately, didn't notice. but unfortunately for you, your twin did. he cursed under his breath as he pulled you aside quickly.

"y/n, what was that?"

"what?"

"you were literally drooling over tanaka!" he quietly screamed.

"i wasn't!" you said, a bit louder, making some of them look at the two of you but you dismissed them quickly. "chikara, you cannot tell anyone about this!"

"wait, so you do like him?"

"no!" you said, eyes closing in frustration then you looked at ennoshita. "i don't know, maybe? i literally don't know, help me."

"if you're asking me for help, that means you really do have feelings for him," he said.

"you're not helping! he's literally in love with kiyoko!"

he looked at you, expression in deadpan. "no. if you don't see it, you don't have hope."

"what?" he looked at you pointedly when he saw tanaka walking towards you. "wait, chikara, what the fuck?"

"y/n? you okay?"

"ryuu!" you turned to him, smiling awkwardly. "yes, i-uh, chikara was just telling me something."

"oh, okay!" he grinned at you, and sheepishly scratched his neck. "uh, listen, i won't be able to walk with you later because i have to do something important."

"it's okay! thanks for letting me know! now, back to practice, we all know daichi when he's mad."

you both shuddered with him jogging back to the others and you sitting beside yachi. after the day had ended, the rain was still pouring hard and one by one, the students slowly trickled out, some sharing their umbrellas and some making a run for it at the bus stop.

you, unfortunately, lent your umbrella to a classmate earlier and by the time you finished going over practice notes with coach ukai, the rain was so thick that you couldn't really see much through it. you tried calling ennoshita but the signal was partly jammed from the rain and from what you could remember, he was on his way to study with kinoshita and narita.

you were shivering and alone with no cell service, what could possibly make it worse?

you suddenly see tanaka from a distance. "wait, is he still here? but, he said..?"

you were about to call him when kiyoko approached him, a small smile on both their faces. this…this was the thing he's doing that's so important…confessing to kiyoko. you sat and held your legs close, you just wished someone would notice you.

tanaka was beaming. sure, he got rained on, but he finally understood. kiyoko was kind enough to help him realize his very confusing feelings towards a certain someone. by the time he got home, the rain was still pouring and so, he immediately called you, hoping you were safely home.

it rang and it rang but you never answered. tanaka eventually went and called ennoshita. "hello? what is it now?"

"is y/n with you? they aren't answering their phone." tanaka was a little worried now, why weren't you answering?

"what? wait, i'll call you back."

tanaka was pacing back and forth, texting some from the team, asking if they had seen you. unfortunately, no one hasn't heard from you. and with the rain jamming the signal, they don't know when they would be able to. tanaka's phone began ringing so he immediately answered. "hey?"

"hey," it's ennoshita. "i called our mom, she hasn't seen y/n either."

"shit," tanaka cursed under his breath. "okay, i'll try and go find her."

"in this rain?" ennoshita, despite being annoyed, was still tanaka's friend and your twin, of course, he'd be worried.

"yes, always." the usual comedic hint in tanaka's voice was gone. "i'll call you."

"okay, i'll try and find them too. please be safe."

"yeah, thanks."

tanaka ended the call, got one of his jackets and an umbrella, and yelled at his sister that he's going out. before saeko could stop him, tanaka had already run. he doesn't know where he was going, all he does know is that he needed to find you.

the rain was still pouring and though tanaka may be shivering, he didn't stop. with his last hope, he ran to karasuno. he stopped in his tracks for a moment when he saw your figure huddled in front of the steps. "y/n!"

you looked up, tears in your eyes. "r..ryuu?"

he quickly ran to you, discarding the umbrella near you as he pulled you in an embrace. you hugged him closer, still shivering from the rain. he nearly sighed in relief but decided to check you over first. "are you okay? why were you just here?"

"i couldn't call anyone," your teeth were clicking too much from the cold as you spoke. "the rain made it hard."

"you should have called me," tanaka's tone was worrying.

"i couldn't. you," you sniffed, looking anywhere but him. "you were with kiyoko, i couldn't both–"

"what?"

"i saw you," you wiped the tears in your eyes. "with her, i mean. i was about to call you but you seemed so ha–."

his hands cupped your face, pulling you a tad closer as he said, "do you want to know why i was with kiyoko earlier?"

"i–yes?"

"i was asking her about my feelings for you."

"what?"

"yeah," he smiled sheepishly. "you're kinda making it hard to breathe every time you smile, you know?"

you laughed, not wanting to believe him as he continued. "and like, we've known each other for so long, and i didn't understand what it meant. kiyoko noticed though. so she talked to me about it and earlier, she was telling me how i should tell you."

"really?"

"would i ever lie to you?"

"yes." you pointedly looked at him.

"that was one time!" you both laughed.

"but, yeah. i didn't plan to confess this way. you know me, i'm all about being extra. i would have wanted to go big, especially if it would annoy your twin brother."

"wait, chikara. i need to text him."

"don't worry, i already did. he did remind me to take you home in one piece. but he didn't warn me about anything else, so i guess we're good?"

you chuckled, "no, you need to tell chikara."

"your mom already loves me, what's he gonna do?"

laughing, you were both reminded of your close proximity. your cheeks warmed significantly, as with his. "so," he wiggled his eyebrows

"so?" you grinned.

"i'm kinda falling in love with you, ennoshita y/n."

"yeah, me too."

"way to ruin the moment, y/n."

"fuck you, i am the moment." you laughed, but pulled him closer to his surprise. "i am kinda falling in love with you too, tanaka ryuunosuke."

and as the rain poured, you closed the distance, kissing him. tanaka, who didn't think he would get this far after confessing to the one he likes, stood dumbly. you backed away, "last chance, ryuu."

he quickly pulled you again, lips melting with yours as he kissed you. yep, your twin brother's gonna kill him.

Trick or treat Kinoshita and Futakuchi!

Come trick or treating in my inbox! Leave a “Trick or Treat” and a character or ship in an ask, and I’ll treat you to some autumn-themed fluff or trick you with some twisted spooky aus! Is this a trick? Is this a treat? Who knows, certainly not me!

The day had begun just this side of cold, as it usually did near the end of October. Chilly, that was the word for it. There was a chill, a nip, a bite to the air, but it wasn’t enough to be called cold. Hisashi left the house with just a light jacket, a windbreaker the origins of which he could no longer remember. Did people even wear windbreakers anymore?

The meeting place was once a grove, home to a beautiful old tree and its younger siblings. Now it was just another suburban street corner. Hisashi didn’t have the energy to sneer at that. He hadn’t in god only knew how many dozens of years now.

Futakuchi was already there. Hisashi knew he was, even when he was still blocks away. The morning was drawing to its end, the sun reaching its height, and it was no longer chilly enough for a jacket. Hisashi paused outside a fast food chain to take it off and tie it around his waist. He knew what sorts of looks he was attracting, between the jacket and the fact tha the was pausing and the fact that he was on foot at all. But much like the energy to sneer, the energy to care had faded decades ago. He looked up at the hazy sky with the most he could muster up of a wish for times long gone, and kept walking.

When he reached the street corner that was once an ancient grove, he stopped beside his old companion.

“Not long now,” he murmured. Futakuchi didn’t answer, but Hisashi knew that didn’t mean he hadn’t heard. “Do you think this one will wipe them out?”

Futakuchi did answer that one, a slow shake of his head and a sigh. “Humans are a persistent species, you know that,” he said. “This has been building longer than we’ve been alive, you know. And how many cataclysms have they survived in all that time?”

Hisashi didn’t point out what they both knew: that those cataclysms were exactly why they were there, in the suburbs instead of a forest. He also didn’t point out that they, too, were a cataclysm, and that if humanity survived them, it would mean their long lives were for nothing.

“Not nothing,” Futakuchi murmured. Hisashi glanced at him.

“I’d forgotten about that,” he admitted.

“That you don’t need to say it out loud?” Hisashi nodded. Futakuchi shook his head and took Hisashi’s hand in his own. “It may not be the humans we need to worry about this time,” he said. Hisashi hummed. Futakuchi was right. This horror the humans had created was more insidious than anything the gods had come up with yet, including the two of them. Hisashi squeezed Futakuchi’s hand.

“We’ll survive,” he promised, looking out over the sprawling watercolor-stain of humanity stretched before them. He sighed. “We’ll survive like we always do, and so will they. I just.”’

“What is it?”

Hisashi looked up to find Futakuchi looking at him, something that didn’t happen as often as they both wanted it anymore. Hisashi smiled, a sad little thing. “Remember when they were beautiful?” he asked.

“They’re still beautiful,” Futakuchi pointed out.

“No, I mean… Remember when we could find them beautiful? Before they brought all this beyond the point of no return?”

“I do,” Futakuchi murmured. “You were the most beautiful of all of them.” He reached out with his free hand to cup Hisashi’s cheek. “You’re still more beautiful than any of them could ever be.”

The sun beat down directly overhead, and Hisashi was beginning to sweat. “I have to return,” he said, reluctant. But Futakuchi smiled at him, squeezing his hand.

“Not long now,” he promised.

“Not long now,” Hisashi repeated. He raised Futakuchi’s hand to press a kiss to each of his knuckles, then let it go. As he walked back through the endless grid of suburban streets, wishing he could see just one playing child or laughing couple, he glanced at the sky where hung the sun, heavy and red and ready to lash out.

Not long now, at all.
