What should I play next?

What should I play next? I’ve cleared my backlog (not you, Sekiro), and I finished all these games last year (with a handful of platinums!). PS5 is my main gaming platform, but I like first-party games on Switch. I also have PSVR2. I have Outer Wilds being delivered on Aug 29th, and am excited for all thats coming in the next few months. But I need something to hold me over until then. Probably going with FFXVI DLC, but am open to suggestions!And without further ado, the list. Please note, I was unemployed for 15 months, or this could have never happened. Also, FFXIV was the free trial. Cleared main game and both accompanied expansions. Kingdom Final Performances: Analyses! Pt. 2

See Introduction in Pt. 1 post! Alright, let's get to it!

Pt. 1: ATEEZ, Stray Kids, The Boyz Pt. 2: BTOB, IKON, SF9

BTOB: 아이구 우리 사랑스러운 아저씨들, oh our lovable ahjusshis. (I call them "old" jokingly bc they are only a couple years older than me) I will also preface by saying im basically a 70% melody lmao) also can we appreciate they've basically been doing this show with half their members 역시 Btob.

OKAY- So i'd already heard the song, and the beginning whisper and dramatic guitar/drum downbeats gave me chills. Since they only have 4 members performing, they separated and spaced out in different parts of the stage, so even tho IRL they're just on different sides, to us the viewers, it looks like each member has their own set, their own stage. It's really effective in expanding our imagination of space and maximizing the scale of the performance, especially since the camera cuts, it rarely pans, to each member in a different "set". ---ALSO WHAT ARE THESE IVORY RHYTHM NATION JANET JACKSON FITS AND POSES?!?!?!!! lmao ok that is powerful imagery. When Eunkwang sings the 1st chorus, the vertical back lighting, his horizontal outstretched arms, and the laterally moving doors, that is a great visual composition and well timed! After Peniel raps, "10 years, and this is just the beginning", it cuts to Changsub standing on a racetrack, like saying they're reading to start out again, or they're run their laps, now they've come back to the beginning, and still ready to go again. (ALSO how cute is mayfly cheering and waving in the back when eunkwang/changsub sing the bridge) You know whats perfect? The fade-to-black lighting, the spotlight, the mic stand, the quiet piano instrumental, the intimate way minhyuk sings "let me show you" right after the duo high note harmony. yes. The rhythm nation dancers then turn into a choir with some step-n-touch moves, and hello did peniel just say this show filmed for FOUR months?!?!? damm

tldr: changsub's whispered beginning got me like 12/10 would recommend

IKON: (ive been familiar with ikon since Who Is Next, so its great to see Mino wrote + composed this song with Bobby) Immediately, the chainlink fences - clever strategy to split up the stage; it creates a set, props to interact with, easily shiftable, like we're in a maze and we are wandering thru the performance. Bobby always has fabulous stage presence, i rmbr his first time attending MAMA, he was so hype the whole time, his reaction gifs were all over tumblr afterwards lmao. as for the song and choreo, it felt very ikon.... almost formulaic in a way. I did like their catchy "아주 빠져가지고" (fallen for it/you) in the chorus. But like jinhwan said after the 1st round, they need to change and be more creative. Even tho, yes, theyre gr8, and they have their style, they know their sound - they still have to evolve with the music industry bc so much has changed/is changing! There was this one musician youtuber that said even if what you do (a song) is amazing, if you keep doing that same thing without changing, then it'll appear like you're stagnant bc those around you in the industry are comparatively evolving. and Jinhwan +co recognized that after the 1st round, they saw how creatively other groups used the stage, used props, used lighting, created narratives in the song and set, had choreography that helped tell the story beyond being cool. And throughout the show, I can see they've been trying new stuff!! So that being said, i think this song and performance did evolve, they tried creative sets and camera direction, but still kept their signature group choreo.

tldr: a nice culmination of their evolving efforts on the show

SF9: ok WHOA HANG ON.... BLACK AND WHITE FILTER/LENS?? Hwiyoung walking down blindfolded?? more mirror props?? (love a good a mirror prop) and then this RAINBOW KALEIDOSCOPE TUNNEL?!?? WTF OMG!!

Ok wow... the black and white juxtaposition in the beginning slow choreo, then in the rapper's outfit, but then the explosion of color in the tunnel!

Rowoon's 1st line: THE LIGHTING!!! THE VISUAL ILLUSIONS!!! This is a MASTERCLASS in the LIGHTING and CAMERA WORK and STAGING! this is absolutely dangerous to watch at 1am in the morning lmao. OK when Rowoon was walking forward in the river of light, the camera was able to create a visual illusion withOUT any special effects! only using the kaleidoscope tunnel blocks, separated, and the color reflection off the top and bottoms create a desert landscape, I THOUGHT MY EYES WERE GOING WILD THE MORE THEY ZOOMED OUT, i thought it was a VCR but it was the stage!!

...The chorus.... WTH WTH WTH... OK HOLDUP I CANNOT

TLDR: I was OVERWHELMED so I just filmed a video instead (will link later after captioning) (starting from the rap) to capture my thoughts faster than typing them out (tho i def need to watch that again to catch all the details)

2nd TLDR: their finale performance was the most impressive/impactful, so creative, very worthy of a 'FINALE performance', and im not even familiar with SF9 so this isnt favoritism! lmao! ..im still thinking about the desert reflection off the kaleidoscope..!!! omggg TT

....i dont even rmbr the song.. visually, it was just so..powerful.

Mushroom Kingdom

Finally talked to Luigi that was floating there and apparently its a game where you connect to the internet and find balloons that others have placed...yeah not going to do that. So I moved on and found a dog and it sniffed around and found a glittery spot, it was a star moon (#10 Found at Peach’s Castle! Good Dog!). After looking around I found the seed I needed at the bottom of the lake, so I took it to the garden to put it in the pot. I just need to wait for it to grow. I spotted some fruit up on the castle so I went and got Yoshi and ate them and it was the last ones I needed to get a star moon (#15 Yoshi’s  All Filled Up!). I found a ring of flowers by the woods and made them bloom with Cappy and I got a star moon (#8 Grow a Flower Garden), I don’t know how I missed it. I then went back to the Crazy Cap shop and decided to buy everything at the right counter, stickers and figurines to use up my purple coins. I then bought a bunch of hints from Hint Toad so I could get the rest.

Kingdom Final Performances: Analyses! Pt. 1

My thoughts as a 10-year long kpop fan, a theatre performance major, a supportive-of-all-groups-doing-well type, & yes i do speak korean (but im not analyzing all lyrics bc they go by v fast) also how is it a decade already lol. Written in order of performance in the episode! No, I am never trying to bash or shade a group.

Pt. 1: Ateez, Stray Kids, The Boyz Pt. 2: BTOB, IKON, SF9 Pt. 2 of episode performances = another post!

ATEEZ: I liked how their message about "멋" ("mot") aka being cool, says being cool is being 'humble and kind' (quote one of their props) This echoes throughout the lyrics, the ending pose bow, the broom sweeping, the stopping of bullies (commentary on korea's bullying blowup perhaps bc HJ said he wanted to show "korea's 멋"), etc. And they included every group's logo on the flags (perhaps reference to road to kingdom where a group included everyone's fanchats), which was a great unifying detail showing the friendships formed are what's 'cool' rather than the competition. ((Hongjoong really reminds me on GD (his gestures, his body language, his look, his facial expressions, his voice) and thats NOT a bad thing (IM NOT SAYING HES COPYING HIM OK). TBH many idol, rappers esp, are similar to/inspired by/image trained using GD and it makes sense bc.... he's GD, so it's hard to distance from his impact. Anyway, Hongjoong I could really see having a solo debut.)) ATZ also brought in the traditional lion dancers (like GD/Taeyang's performance on Infinite Challenge!), which shows embracing Korea's tradition is also part of 멋, being cool. Lion dances are to expel evil spirits, bringing in good fortune, and here they're reject the 'evils' that can come from competition and not only stand unified, but celebrate! with all groups at the end. I loved how they using different visual illusions to create "멋", a way to say that there's different ways to be cool, but in the end, being polite, kind, humble, helpful, responsible, and inclusive, is all part of being cool.

tldr: it was like a trendy PSA for kindness

STRAY KIDS: They said they wanted to go darker than their other performances, but I honestly thought their "기도 I'll be Your Man" was darker. Also, interestingly they chose to show in the beginning that Wolfgang is actually a reference to Mozart! I'll have to read the lyrics, but I wish they would've brought the reference back in someway later. The set looks really fun for parkour: like a rundown, lived-in, abandoned amusement park! Good for quick stage blocking, and fast scene changes. At the end, it showed only 2 slopes- I wish they had used more elaborate sets, it felt like they had 1.5 total 'scenes', only differentiated by the ivy curtain. For some reason, I was waiting for a surprise/reveal, 반전 좀 기다리고 있어. Those fur jackets doe, like a dam fluffy cloud. also EXCUSE ME BANG CHAN- 니 몸 여기서 보여준다고?!??!!!!?! In terms of scale, performance, and song, I preferred their 神DUDUDU stage bc it felt more like a bombastic, bold, we-are-here statement. Wolfgang unfortunately didn't sweep me up; there wasn't a definitive MOMENT (like how sf9 got criticism that their 1st performance didn't feel clear, no climax). Now, dont get me wrong, I support SKZ, I do, which is why I believe they can do better (and HAVE done!, like even their first impression stage was more captivating! and unexpected! and kept my eyes glued to the screen more than wolfgang). But who knows, maybe a few more listens/views?

tldr: 神DUDUDU stage felt more like a finale

THE BOYZ: Impressed with how much they incorporated the VCR clips, it felt like almost half of the performance was video??!? that's not easy to coordinate, camera-timing-wise, so props to the director/camera work. Also, great use of pyrotechnics in time with their high note and lyrics, visually and audio-ly satisfying. And wait, did that one guy fall from his lift?!?!?!? Or was the timing correct?? Bc it went right into video, so im unsure. Interestingly, they didnt use ANY sets, except a water pool near the end. Instead they filled it up with dancers, perhaps to show their strength in numbers, and sharp choreography, that their people are here, their kingdom is come? Overall, the visuals, outfits, choreo, and LED screens felt very 'idol boy group', so in a way, they are exactly on brand! lol

tldr: nice VCRs
