Characteristics of Effective ABA

We have made a list of twelve effective characteristics of ABA that you should be aware of.

1. Intensive: This would typically be more than 20 hours per week

2. Early: As soon as you have a definitive diagnosis, you should begin treatment immediately. This would ideally be by the age of 2 or 3. This ensures that the child can maximize the gains of the program by the time they need to start school. This is also before they would be six years old, when their IQ becomes somewhat permanent. The other benefit to starting early is that the less learning history ABA will compete with.

3. Sequence Development: What ABA does is address the necessary skills a child needs across a wide range of developmental spaces. Skills are taught in such a way that beginner levels are identified and addressed first. Then, if certain levels and prerequisites are missing, this will be identified. Each level is taught and advancement won’t happen until all developmental spaces are possessed by the child. This will make it so that they will be at the same level as their other peers by the time they reach school.

4. Individualization: Everyone is unique. This is no exception for children with autism. Each child will have different behaviour ranges across all developmental domains. There is no singular treatment that will help every child. Each has to be tailored to fit their individual needs.

Using a floor rug provides a clearly defined space for each child's work, preserving both the materials themselves from being trampled and the intellectual space to which the working child must attend. For young children, having a concrete edge to their work space allows them to better manage the work itself, focusing on it with more concentration and maintaining the complete cycle of activity on their own. But the cognitive benefits of working on a rug require the child to first understand how the manage the rug itself. That's why you'll often see teachers offering children lessons in rolling and unrolling rugs, carrying them across the room and walking carefully around them without stepping on them.
