Mikhail Tikhanov in Hawaii pt. 2: Boki and Liliha
Boki, Chief of Oahu, and Hekili, Minister of the Navy, 1818
Tumblr media
In the painting Boki, Chief of Oahu, and Hekili, Minister of the Navy. we get a close look at a male figures face. His hand is tucked under his robe in a similar manner to Kamehameha. From the title of the painting we can gather that this man is Boki, Chief of Oahu. In front of him, we see the side profile of another man, sporting a mustache, Hekili. Behind them, almost invisible, is a third character, a single hand carrying a spear.
Boki was a high chief and close right-hand man to Kamehameha, serving as Royal Governor of the island of Oahu and Minister of the Navy under Kamehameha I.
Boki and Liliha on the Kamchatka, 1818
Tumblr media
In this painting four figures are present. Center a man with a bright coloured cape and somewhat somber expression stands holding a bottle and cup. Behind him, a woman sits atop a canon, she wears a yellow skirt and appears to be watching Tikhanov with suspicion. Around her neck is a dramatic looking necklace. Both man and woman appear to be drawn both in profile, and viewed from the back. This style is typical in Tikhanov’s work, and many of his portraits feature multiple angles of the subject. Closer examination reveals that the man and the woman with their backs faced to the scene, although wearing identical clothes, are not the same man and woman as those drawn in profile. The man has short hair, and carries a spear. The woman is not wearing a necklace and crown. Behind her, a fifth man, barely visible, peaks out. He carries some kind of fan or standard. There is a striking similarity between the fanbearer of this portrait and the spear bearer of the other. Between the fan and the spear, the dual opulence and violence that underlie Hawaiian aristocratic society is constantly present, lingering in the background almost out of frame. Boki and Liliha, a portrait by John Hayter 1818
Tumblr media
These figures are, of course, Boki and his wife Liliha. Both Boki and his wife Kuini Liliha were leading members of a delegation to England led by King Kamehameha II and Queen Kamamalu in 1824. After the monarchs died from measles during the stay, Boki and his wife returned to Hawaii with Admiral Lord Byron aboard the British frigate, HMS Blonde, which bore the bodies of the late king and queen. They served as interm representatives of the Kingdom, and after returning from the voyage, opened a hotel and bar called the Blonde Hotel, the first of it’s kind on the Island Kingdom.
During their tour of England, they posed together for a second portrait by John Hayter. This allows for a rare opprotunity to compare their likeness to the portrait captured by Mikhail TIkhanov. As we can see, not only are there striking facial similarities, but Liliha is even wearing the same necklace in both paintings.

I said a small bit of it on Twitter but trust me it gets even better:
The reason Cook and his men get wrecked during this third visit is because when they first visited it was during the Makahiki season aka harvest season which meant NO THROWING HANDS AT ALL and you better be nice to everyone or the gods smite you (also aside from it being considered a sacred time you also need all the men you can get when it comes to harvesting so best not to kill anyone).
Anyways Cook and his crew coming in during Makahiki made them appearing to be gods all the more viable, but ofc not everyone was fooled.
Especially this random seven some odd feet tall dude named Kamehameha.
Yes, that one. The Great is in there for a reason.
See Hawaiians may not have had much contact with foreign caucasians but they weren’t stupid by any means, especially war strategist extraordinaire and head general Kamehameha. Surprisingly, neither was Cook, who explored the seas and encountered numerous Pasifika on his journey. So when Kamehameha offers to trade his long feather cape (remember: roughly seven feet tall dude) for some metal knives the crew had on the ship (found by his men who were definitely not stealing shit no sir teehee), Cook knew damn well not to say no because that’s considered rude.
So Cook gives Kamehameha the knives and he gets a sweet looking souvenir for England.
And then when they try to make their way back, a storm hits.
Cook and his men are forced to turn back around to Hawaii and resupply from the storm before trying to make it back home. Naturally, they expected the same warm welcome that they had the first visit because there’s no reason why they shouldn’t.
Except there was.
Makahiki was over.
And it’s time to cook some meat.
Cook and his men land right where Kamehameha and his men were waiting for them, brandishing some sick knives, and a brawl ensues. Mind you Kamehameha may have been a little over seven feet tall, but his men weren’t lacking either. All of them were lean mean fighting machines and Kamehameha happened to be the best out of all of them. The crew wasn’t just dealing with random people, they’re fighting the Polynesian equivalent of a Berserker except these Berserkers were trained in the art of breaking bones and cutting off nerves with their bare hands.
And they all have knives.
The second one of the Hawaiians saw a crew member drop blood on the sand (something gods shouldn’t be able to do) it was wraps for all of them. Cook and his men didn’t just get cleared, they got annihilated on that beach.
Moral of the story: never stay at someone else’s house for too long.
Especially not a native one.
Happy Valentine’s Day! 💖
Edit: Completely forgot to mention that on his second visit he attempted to kidnap Kamehameha’s boss aka the aliʻi who are considered sacred so yeah do with that what you will.

Tapu Mew-Mew Ref Sheet!
Tumblr media
Another thing for the 'Try-Two' Mewtwo AU I'm slowly chipping away at! One (of four) offshoot clones of the original Mewtwo, with lore and concept/research under the cut! --------
So long ago my bestie and I decided that there were going to be a few clones past the original one that we started with that was made in the same lab as Mewtwo. Depending on where they were made, they'd adopt some regional traits. One of which was Alola - where this bean comes in! One of the offshoot Mewtwo project labs was secreted away in Alola, and since the progenitor was a lost cause (what with wrecking shop on the HQ and all), what resources they could divert went into these far-flung facilities. Not that it lasted long - the Island Deities of Alola were not appreciative of such things in their region, and both leveled the facility in entirety, but also kidnapped its focused Mewtwo clone. After years of being raised alongside them, and having not quite fully 'grown' at the time of his rescue, he began to take on weird traits - aided by his Tapu caretakers. This would result in plates similar to theirs, a Water Typing (complete with biologically-created water veil at will!), and pigmentation changes that'd eventually mimic the very beings raising him. As such, they eventually inducted their weird little pseudo-progeny into their roles, playing a bit of an odd 'fifth' role. He doesn't preside over Alola like they do, but he both tends to - and observes - the balance between their natural origins and cultures, while also ensuring the merciless march of technology and contact with outside regions does not cause a discarding of the olden ways. He is the youngest of the clones, but also because of how Alola has become a rich tourist destination, he's also the most well-informed - having known about his 'father's' rampage, the death of Giovanni, and some (not ALL) of his 'siblings'. His nature being what it is, he's also the closest to old-school Mew in demeanour. --RESEARCH TIME-- SO. I wanted to make sure what I was doing wasn't an absolute mess, especially given the Tapu reference a *very real* culture. So, I dug in a bit, looked up each of the four major Hawaiian gods that the Tapu refer to. (at least those that were most prominent, King Kamehameha's reign causing some muddiness in it)
Given that bit of research, plus the other thing Alola's rituals/trials reference (the balance between preserving Hawaii's traditions, while *also* adapting influences from outside regions since contact), I wanted this 'pseudo-Tapu' to be a sort-of 'avatar' for Alola's version of it. A few things: 1) The Tapu have animal themes, which are indicated by their shells and patterning. Tapu Mew-Mew's are less angular, and more loosely resemble manmade structures. 2) As he isn't a biological Tapu, despite his grown shells, he is unable to close them whatsoever. However, he did gain an odd quirk that they can generate a sort of water-shawl and skirt that he calls a 'water veil'. 3) Because he is, by creation, a literal clone (unlike his father, who was an unborn Mew mutated into a Mewtwo), he is slightly indicative of that balance - born by artificial means, raised in nature and adapting to it. The Tapu deemed him fit to both have his own personalized Trials, but also that his role was exactly what he symbolized - observing and maintaining the balance between the two sides of the post-contact cultural shift in Alola.
4) He is *absolutely* as capricious as his caretakers. The reason the Aether Foundation both remains in Alola, but does not stir up trouble is because he has made it all too clear that the reason it still exists was due to him being 'in a good mood' when he confronted Lusamine and her staff. He's also not one to make his retribution proportional. (Damn near considered capsizing it from the get-go because he 'didn't like how it looked'.) An absolute joy to make, and will be even more fun to write! Y'know. Once I get there. |D

King Kalākaua-- dubbed throughout time as the "Merry Monarch"-- dedicated his life&complicated rule to establishing the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi as an independent power recognized world wide, as well as revitalizing a culture that had been nearly ground to dust under the heel of colonization. Hula-- once publicly outlawed as a deeply spiritual&religious act by the missionaries who spearheaded the war to destroy our culture-- was brought back to the public consciousness by the King, an incredibly accomplished dancer himself.
The Merry Monarch Hula Festival is the most well-known portion of his legacy, and is celebrated by kānaka&lovers of hula all over the world.
