✩⚔️🏰Series Review:
⋆ Adventure and suspense ⋆ Political intrigue ⋆ Romance ⋆ Multiple pov
What started out as a twist on Robin Hood turned into an action-packed, high-stakes adventure with brooding pirates, power-hungry consuls, and warring kingdoms that I could not put down. With each book in the series, I grew closer to Kemmerer’s characters and further immersed myself in the world they inhabited. All the tears I shed were worth it in the end and I look forward to reading Kemmerer’s next project.

I just finished Destroy the Day, and I am officially finished with the Defy the Night Trilogy, as devastating as that is to say.
if you plan to read this or you are a friend or colleague of mine that I have begged to read it! Do it!! But go away so I don’t ruin everything for you. Please.
spoilers below cut
I knew Harristan and Quint were gonna get gay with each other, and I was not disappointed. They are just so cutie and I love them very, very much.
speaking of which, when they “died” I was like, this would be such a cute little way to let them live out their dreams as the stable boy and the mill boy! And I’m so glad that’s what happened, I don’t know if I could handle it if they got to be themselves and then were killed instantly anyways.
loving the fact that they needed a fake name for Quint and they were like “you worked in a mill, so you shall be Miller!” Horribly creative, my liege
also, I’m really happy that Corrick knew, and didn’t feel like it had to be some huge thing. I have lots of siblings, some of which are LGBTQ+ and it wouldn’t have felt right for them to be brothers that spent their whole lives together, but Corrick can’t tell when Harristan is checking a dude out. Very well done! Especially because it included a bit of brotherly teasing. They are written so well for siblings, you can tell Kemmerer either has some herself or has really studied sibling dynamics in preparation.
Tessa and Corrick make me oh so happy. I wish I was her, please just one chance. They are so perfect for each other, very Hades and Persephone. They will make excellent rulers.
I was also ecstatic when it was revealed Corrick wasn’t dead! I would not have been able to handle it!!!
and how could I forget Corrick and Lochlan’s friendship. Nothing makes me happier than two men who love their partners so much that they can’t help but get along. Lochlan had lost his own brother, and he knew what Corrick needed, and he will be a perfect King’s Justice. (Sweetest moment ever, I shed many a tear) I was hoping that Corrick would appoint him for the same reasons Corrick stated in Destroy the Day. They are just so funny when they mess with each other, I love them so very much.
wonderful, wonderful books. Sad they are over, but glad Brigid Kemmerer didn’t turn it into some huge drawn out series. She knew three books was all she needed to tell this particular story. Not that I would be mad about a spin-off or two, however 👀

I HAVE NOT READ DEFEMD THE DAWN YET, BUT IF HARRISTAN AND QUINT DON’T END UP TOGETHER I THINK I’LL CRY.
My wild (?) theory supported by scenes across Defy the Night on why Harristan and Quint could be a ship in Defend the Dawn:
(note: if they are somehow revealed to be related, like Rhen & Grey, forget this whole post lolol)
(1) The subtle banter and bickering
Tumblr media
(2) The way Quint is confident enough to intercede with Harristan when the situation is tense
Tumblr media
(3) when Quint is injured and Harristan is like siT DOWN, I'M GONNA PATCH YOU UP AND HEAL YOU
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(4) this: .... but Harristan hesitates in the hallway. He studies Quint, sound asleep to the point where he's almost drooling.
"I'll wake him," I say. [Corrick]
"No. Let him sleep."

Review: Defy the night - Brigid Kemmerer
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kingdom of Kandala is on the brink of disaster. Rifts between sectors have only worsened since a sickness began ravaging the land, and within the Royal Palace, the king holds a tenuous peace with a ruthless hand.
King Harristan was thrust into power after his parents' shocking assassination, leaving the younger Prince Corrick to take on the brutal role of the King's Justice. The brothers have learned to react mercilessly to any sign of rebellion--it's the only way to maintain order when the sickness can strike anywhere, and the only known cure, an elixir made from delicate Moonflower petals, is severely limited.
Out in the Wilds, apothecary apprentice Tessa Cade is tired of seeing her neighbors die, their suffering ignored by the unyielding royals. Every night, she and her best friend Wes risk their lives to steal Moonflower petals and distribute the elixir to those who need it most--but it's still not enough.
As rumors spread that the cure no longer works and sparks of rebellion begin to flare, a particularly cruel act from the King's Justice makes Tessa desperate enough to try the impossible: sneaking into the palace. But what she finds upon her arrival makes her wonder if it's even possible to fix Kandala without destroying it first.
Review:
I need to read the sequel. I was impressed around the torture but otherwise you can tell I rarely stopped reading it. It is a beautiful story with very raw and well put together characters. There is always an undercurrent behind an authoritarian government, not always the one at the head is the corrupt one. I love reading books inspired by Robin Hood.

Defend the Dawn is the fantastic sequel to Defy the Night. This is easily my favorite read of 2022! Brigid Kemmerer writes the most amazing characters and the best stories. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book in this series!

Defy the Night
Things I liked:
-     Corrick and Tessa are so cute together!  I really liked that by the end of the book they were together.  Sometimes I don't want to wait for the happiness.  I like to when it happens right away and they can be happy together!
-     The twist where Wes is actually Corrick was sooooooooo good!  I would never have guessed that was going to happen in a million years. And they way it was just kind of revealed without like trying to beat around it made it so much better.
Things I didn't like:
-      The only thing I can think of that was not great was that there didn't seem to be a really strong villain in the story.  Like there seems to be a lot of people who could be the villain but none of them really stood out.
Overall:
-     This book was better then the entire A Curse so Dark and Lonely series put together in my opinion.  It had the right balance of romance, action, politics, and comic relief.  It was very engaging and so much fun to read.  I can't believe I have no idea when the second one comes out.
- Rating: 5/5

I was on the edge of my seat with tissues on hand at all times!
“Destroy the Day” follows Corrick, Tessa, and Harristan as they find their way back to each other to save the Kingdom of Kandala before time runs out.
I really enjoyed the beginning and end of this book! Kemmerer creates characters that are impossible not to grow attached to, so I was happy to jump back in with Tessa, Corrick, and Harristan after being without them for so long. Their points-of-view allow the reader to explore the Kingdom of Ostriary while still remaining connected to the happenings in the Kingdom of Kandala. As always, Kemmerer’s detailed imagery and thoughtful world-building effectively immerse the reader in new environments and old.
Sadly, the middle is where this book fell flat for me. Tessa and Corrick spend a majority of the book apart and Kemmerer relies on other storylines to advance the plot forward—storylines that I just did not find captivating and made the story feel longer than necessary. Once Tessa and Corrick actually reunite, I was underwhelmed by their romance and I expected more since I was deprived of it for most of the book.
Still, saying goodbye to this series was hard and the ending made me so emotional. I bawled like a baby for a solid chapter or two, but I couldn’t be happier with how Kemmerer left things!

My thoughts are still reeling about everything that happened in Defend the Dawn but one thing that sticks out the most to me is the reveal about why Rian had Moonflower. Rian revealed that in Ostriary, that Moonflower is a well recognized poison but in Kandala Moonflower is a cure for a sickness. A sickness that according to Rian has the exact same symptoms as Moonflower poisoning which is why Rian believed the king was poisoning his people. Now Corrick seemed shocked about all this and would have never suspected that this cure was also a poison. But in a previous chapter if I remember correctly, Harristan overhears accusations against him that the king is poisoning his people which suggests to me that someone in the Kingdom of Kandala knows that Moonflower is actually a poison. There are specific consuls that would benefit from poisoning the people of Kandala if they had the knowledge that they had the remedy to the poison and could make a profit of it. So this suggests that there actually is no fever or sickness but rather someone (or a group of someones) is somehow poisoning the people of their own Kingdom and not only directly profit off of it but also create a level of distrust between the king and his subjects. I guess the only thing that I question is how the Moonflower poisoning would be so wide spread then and why is it well known that it is poison in another kingdom but it was completely unheard of as a poison in Kandala. I'm curious if Tessa ever came across Moonflower poisoning before since she is an apothecary but I feel like it would have been brought up before. I wonder if Arella is the consul that discovered it but what would her motives be to betray the king so completely when in the previous book she acted as though she cared about the people and disagreed with Corrick's harsh punishment. I just have so many thoughts about this and it definitely was an interesting reveal.

★ Fantasy books or contemporary books? I love both, especially fantasy books that incorporate more contemporary aspects, voice, and situations that are transformed to a fantasy atmosphere. There’s something very refreshing about it and I’ve found I especially love @brigidkemmerer’s books for that reason—both fantasy and contemporary, and those that blend a bit of both! Today I’m featuring Defend the Dawn, the sequel to Brigid’s Defy the Night! Defend the Dawn releases in September, and I’m looking forward to reading it! Description: To save their kingdom, they must embark on a dangerous journey... The kingdom of Kandala narrowly avoided catastrophe, but the embers of revolution still simmer. While King Harristan seeks a new way to lead, Tessa and Prince Corrick attempt to foster unity between rebels and royals. But the consuls who control the Moonflower will not back down, and Corrick realizes he must find a new source for the lifesaving Elixir. When an emissary from the neighboring kingdom of Ostriary arrives with an intriguing offer, Tessa and Corrick set out on an uncertain journey as they attempt to mend their own fractured relationship. This could be their only chance to keep the peace and bring relief to the people of Kandala, but danger strikes during the journey to Ostriary, and no one is who they seemed to be. . . Thank you to @bloomsburyya for sending me a copy of the book. ★ HASHTAGS //    #DefendtheDawnARCTour #DefendtheDawn #brigidkemmerer #bloomsburyya #storygramtours #defythenight #fantasybooks #bookstagram #bookstack #bookshelf #bookcart #homelibrary #bookseverywhere #shelfie #booksbooksbooks #readfantasy #bookdragon https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf9u_rmP3L-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
