What’s the difference between Ascended, Aspects, Freljordian demigods, Aurelian Sol, and whatever Soraka’s got going on? Are they all just different varieties of League gods?

Hoo boy, okay, so. First of all, Riot have been pretty adamant that there are no gods in Runeterra, every god-like being that exists in that universe is actually a spirit or just a very powerful being of some kind, but definitely no real gods, no matter how much it seems like they are definitely writing these characters to be actual literal gods.

I don't 100% know why they are so insistent on this, but I imagine it has something to do with censorship and ratings agencies, or maybe they just don't want to have to establish any actual theology on Runeterra. Volibear isn't the god of storms for real, he's just a super powerful spirit that can create storms in the Freljord, but not all of them, so please don't ask us whether every single thunderstorm in the Freljord was something he did deliberately. That sort of vibe.

To go through them point by point:

Celestials & Aspects

The Celestials are beings like Aurelion Sol and Bard, which exist as cosmic entities operating on levels of power and motivation beyond human understanding. They came into existence with the universe itself, and tend to busy themselves governing various parts of its operation. They are, again not gods (Riot is very insistent on this), but Aurelion Sol literally made every star in the galaxy, he's functionally the progenitor god of Creation.

Some of them, though, like to interfere in the mortal world of Runetera in various ways, and they tend to use mortal vessels to do it. That's where we get Aspects: Aspects are mortals who are chosen by the Celestials that live on Mount Targon to contain their power and be their avatars in the mortal world.

Leona is the Aspect of a Sun celestial, Diana of the Moon celestial, Pantheon is the Aspect of War (or he was, until Aatrox killed it, but he retains access to many of its powers), and Zoe is the Aspect of Twilight, and so on.

Soraka is another Celestial in mortal form, but she is NOT an Ascended. Rather than possess a mortal, she created a mortal body for herself and poured the whole of her being into it, which is causing her body to permanently burn up from the inside while she regenerates it with her magic. She lives on Runeterra and acts as a mysterious mystical wise guide and mentor to mortals who need it.

Ascended & Darkin

Ascended are somewhat similar in kind to the Aspects, but usually lesser in power. The Ascended are also human beings infused with Celestial magic and power, specifically with the power of the Sun, although as far as I know, that power is drawn not from the Celestial of the Sun who empowers Leona, but directly from the physical Sun itself. This means the Ascended aren't possessed by Celestials and retain full free will, at the cost (or let's be real: benefit) of being transformed into furries, which extremely coincidentally just so happen to closely resemble the gods of the Egyptian pantheon. but again, they are definitely not gods, please don't put it in the newspaper that they are gods.

I don't know exactly how canon Riot considers this anymore, but the lore was that the Aspects of Mount Targon gifted the power of Ascension to Shurima in order to produce Ascended that could serve as shock-troops in the war against the Void, which is a swarm of extradimensional horrors that are constantly trying to eat the world. Whatever the case, the Ascended DID fight the Void, and it traumatized and corrupted them so badly that they degenerated into body-horror blood monsters called the Darkin.

The Darkin fell into civil war and it got so bad that The Aspect of Twilight (not Zoe but her predecessor in the role) decided to use some magical trickery to imprison them all in their weapons, which is where they've stayed for a few thousand years, getting even more traumatized and mentally destabilized by the total sensory deprivation and solitary confinement. If any mortal touches a Darkin weapon, it immediately assimilates them and uses their flesh as a new host, and then goes on a killing rampage about it. That's where you get your Aatrox, your Varus and (eventually, once he devours Kayn) your Rhaast.

Gods, Spirits & Demons

This is the category for Ornn, Anivia, Volibear, The Seal Sister and so on. The Freljordian people worship them as gods, but they are, technically, only extremely powerful nature spirits, manifestations of the nature of the Freljord itself, which draw power from the land and to a lesser extent from their worshipers. There are many, many lesser nature spirits, which might be worshiped as gods by particular tribes or hold power over particular areas, but Ornn, Anivia, Volibear, The Seal Sister and the Iron Boar are the most powerful and most widely revered.

On a similar note, Ionia is absolutely choked to the gills with spirits, because those lands are soaked in magic. They are usually not worshiped as gods specifically, but take the shape of everything from dragons to living trees to sprites and will-o-wisps and which roam fairly freely in Ionia. This includes characters like Lillia, who is the daughter of a magical tree of dreams on whose branches the dreams of mortals grow and mature, and it includes Ivern, who is an extremely powerful and ancient nature spirit formed from the soul of a magical tree.

Demons are distinct from spirits, in that rather than drawing on the power of the land or fountains of magic, they draw on the emotions of living things for their powers. The most powerful demons are known as The Ten, who get their power from the most primal emotions that living things feel. Fiddlesticks is the demon of Fear, and Nilah somehow draws her strength from Ashlesh, the Demon of Joy, whom her order has imprisoned. We don't know who the rest of the Ten are yet, but Riot seems to have that worked out somewhere in their internal deep lore.

Swain has a lesser (but still powerful) demon of secrets called Raum bound in his arm through some sort of deal, Evelynn is a demon of anguish and pain, Tahm Kench is a demon of addiction, and Nocturne is a demon of nightmares.

Besides those, there are an untold number of lesser demons, who feed on more and more specific feelings, and thus are less and less powerful because there's simply less of that stuff around to feed on. They are often called Azakana, and may be demons that feed on feelings as niche as, like, noblemen's fear of their extramarital affairs with handsome commoners being discovered. Yone hunts the Azakana and collects their mask, although even he doesn't know quite what for.

Death

This is where we place the Kindred. Technically they are merely Spirits of Death, but more than perhaps any other category of creature, Riot keeps writing them as Literal Gods of death and I don't think it makes sense to think of them any other way.

The Kindred take on many different shapes all across Runeterra, seemingly influenced in large part by the expectations of the people or creatures who are dying, but their most popular visage is that of a Lamb and a Wolf, hunting together. Lamb's merciful arrow ends your life if you accept that your time is up and go gently into that good night, but Wolf hunts you down and rips you to shreds if you resist and fight to your last breath, destiny be damned.

The Kindred are there for every death on Runeterra, they are the mediators (as far as we know) of all forms of death everywhere, and by far the most classically "anthropomorphic embodiment of universal existence" style god in the lore that we know of. Where a god like Anivia only really has power in the Freljord, the Kindred have power everywhere there is life. Only the undead escape them, and even then, only temporarily.

In Conclusion

YES Runeterra has tons of gods, it obviously has gods, you can't walk five feet in that universe without tripping on a god, but they tend to be gods with hard limitations on their power and influence, and rarely have powers on the level of bending reality itself.

Even Aurelion Sol, who literally makes stars, can't snap his fingers and undo causality, for example, or suspend the laws of physics wholesale.

Riot's weird insistence on "no gods in Runeterra" is more of an affectation, a bit of a put-on, than an actual narrative principle, and most of the gods of Runeterra can be understood very comfortably through the lens of various non-Christian religions like Norse or Greek mythology, or the hero/god characters of something like Polynesian myth.

League of Legends should make a Skyrim type game where you play as the Kindred and can swap between Wolf and Lamb as you explore Runeterra and the Spirit Realm and as you go around the map reaping souls you learn about the world and its inhabitants through the lens of their last moments.

Narratively kind of similar to how The Book Thief is told from the perspective of Death as a narrator.

Gameplay-wise you can play as Lamb and be a Stealth Archer or be the supporting fire as you send Wolf to engage, or be Wolf and be a Berserker type fighter who rips out enemies throats and protects Lamb from retaliation. And you can swap between these freely and smoothly, adapting your gameplay to whatever you desire in the moment and what tactic you need to use.

random question (please feel free to ignore)... do you have any recommendations for where to learn more about League of Legends lore/worldbuilding? I'm fresh off watching the show, totally unfamiliar with the game and wanting to try my hand at writing fic but am finding myself a bit lost as far as learning more about the setting (specifically Piltover and Zaun). I ask you because I've been reading (and greatly enjoying) some of your fics and they feel really grounded in the setting. thanks so much for your time!

I'll always direct you to the vikjayce codex first (open this on browser so you can see the site tabs/better reading experience) so you can get a hold of their characters pre-arcane.

After that, try the Piltover page and the Zaun page on the league universe website! There are other tabs for champion lores and such. I recommend skimming through every region's summary pitch to get a feel of things and then reading whatever you like.

We also have ALTERNATE UNIVERSES with their own lore and different takes on the champs. Arcane implies they remain all canon simultaneously. Star Guardian is a magical girl universe & Odyssey is a space opera universe with their own pages, though there's far more based on skins. Every timeline every possibility etc you have freerange

There's also a 2021 companion book called Realms of Runeterra, I don't think its particularly game changing but it presents things in an organized way and you can.... find it in places where books are uploaded...

lastly, youtube has a lot of 'lore of runeterra' 'league lore summary of X & Y' videos - some of them pretty good! I'm not going to link any because I havent watched them in a while but it can make things easier for you. JUST KEEP IN MIND pretty often these youtubers will get details wrong and you should be double-checking on any assumption they do before internalizing it as hard canon, like read the short story or bio for yourself etc. A lot of people mischaracterized jayce/viktor for a while bc these guys kept conflating arcane with past canon and arcane changes up the world A LOT, the previous timeline is basically destroyed.

On the last point: writing Arcane verse gives you a little more wiggle room because the entire worldbuilding is up on the air, and relies entirely on what is most convenient or narratively sound for the story. Readers are totally willing to see your own take on things.

There's something worth saying about Ambessa's connection with death in the show, and I feel like because of her lore it was already kind of obvious that she'd have to end this whole show dead. And that's just because unknown to most Arcane watchers, she has this really strong connection with an actual aspect of Death in League lore known as the Kindred.

"Kindred" is a champion in League of legends who represents Death in Runeterra in the same way as a grim reaper who comes to collect souls. They are two spirits, a Wolf that likes to hunt, and a Lamb that wears a mask and wields a bow. Many of the nations in Runeterra believe in Kindred in some way or another, but each nation has their own way of viewing Kindred (because each Nation has their own views on death and what not).

Ambessa repeatedly says "A wolf shows no mercy" and that's mostly because of her warrior spirit, but its also quite literally how Wolf (the second half of Kindred) acts. The Wolf is a merciless beast that only craves violence and a good hunt, while the lamb is an emotionless hunter who can't understand the feelings of the ones she hunts down in the first place.

The splash art above is from the Chosen of the Wolf skin line that Ambessa got when she was first released into the game. In the Chosen of the Wolf lore, Ambessa basically brings about the end of the world and becomes "Chosen" by Kindred to carry on an endless hunt (Basically death for everyone...forever lol) In this lore, Lamb fully embraces the nature of the Hunt regardless of sense or reason. She even wears a "Wolf" mask, to symbolize how they're both "The Wolf" now and there's really no mercy in death anymore (at least in this timeline)

Its also worth pointing out that the Chosen of the Wolf skinline looks awfully a lot like the world Leblanc shows Mel. When Leblanc recruits Mel, she shows her a future that looks almost identical in nature to this future, where there's no mercy for anyone and Ambessa is fighting an endless war forever T_T

Because Ambessa is Noxan, it's obvious that her and a lot of other Noxans view death through the Wolf, as something violent, gorey, and painful. Merciless. However, when Ambessa passed away in Mel's arms she says "You are the wolf" which to me is actually her acknowledging that there is mercy in death, in a wolf specifically because Mel ended up trying to save her from Leblanc even though she was still upset with her.

A wolf may not show mercy, but the lamb does. And I think that Ambessa's death in the show was her finally coming to terms with the fact that she didn't have to continue on with the endless fight for legacy and to achieve greatness, because she had already achieved those things through her daughter. The tragedy is that she couldn't understand or see that until it was too late.

Anyways I just wanted to write this post about Ambessa because she's actually really cool and I haven't been able to stop thinking about her phrase "A wolf has no mercy" and how it was almost a direct reference to Kindred almost. But to show that this was also Ambessa willfully looking past the other half of Death, which is the Lamb who is merciful and wants to understand people even though she can't.

With the release of 'Chosen of the Wolf Kindred' on PBE, I just have to say that in my personal opinion, Kindred are probably the best champion design in League of Legends? And I don't say that to demean any other champion, there are some amazing heavy hitters like Jhin too, but Kindred positioned as the embodiment of death in Runeterra are surprisingly flexible and they tell us so much about the culture by way of how it depicts them.

The 'Main Kindred' we see are the Freljord depiction of them, more Primal and older than other depictions (as we've been told), and their design matches that age, essentially just two figures, one white with a bit of black, and one black with a bit of white.

Then we got 'Spirit Blossom', and unlike the simpler designs, they are much more ornate and decorated. It also shows just how much the story can change, with them being a Child and her fellow Dog companion, yet remain the same, still two which are one.

And just recently we got 'Chosen of the Wolf', the Noxian interpretation of Kindred, and they are so War-like as a nation, that even the Lamb has Wolfish features, to Noxians there is no peaceful acceptance of death, you must always fight against the dying of the night.

They are just...it's just such a malleable and interesting concept! There's so much to learn and analyze from what the different regions see. I want more! I want to see how Piltover and Zaun see them, how Shurima sees them, how Ixtal sees them, and the rest! Not just read a blurb, I want to see and learn.

Then every characters and their mothers proceed to escape death.

So basically Piltover has a bit of a halt (because all their good scientists just fucking died)

Jayce, Viktor, Heimerdinger (they're not letting singed back into the city) and also Jinx (cause she was sorta a scientist)

So ekko is like "i gotta fix this shit cause otherwise Piltover wont be the city of progress"

As a kid, there was this fairytale circulating Zaun about some god that could bring people back to life

(I have rights to slightly change their character cause Arcane did it for their entire cast)

And Ekko goes to Vi and asks if she could help him

and her being her is like "that is a fairytale, you seriously believe it?"

and Ekko has the most deadass face

So he reads the fairytale again and figures out that it's instructions on how to bring back people from the dead

He has to find 4 people from all around Runeterra with different abilities and gather them in this spooky temple in the spooky woods

They also have to find a dead body cause Kindred brings back dead people, not makes them (like transferring souls)

and I'm still thinking about who would be in the group

So I was thinking about incorperating Lux in it so think Wild Rift You Really Got Me trailer Lux has met Jinx ONCE and that was when she was stealing something from her home aka the only time Jinx has left Zaun and it wouldn't be powder or teen jinx it would be INBETWEEN the time we DON'T see in the time skip so new jinx design teehee

and im tryna think of other characters me n gang about to bring people back from the dead: Ekko (Everyone in his life EVER) Lux (dead relative) Ahri (cause she killed her boyfriend or something) and i've got no idea for other people I think Gwens creator died or something So I'd add Gwen But that's way too many women Ekko and the gang get a body and bring it to Kindred Ekko's happy he can finally bring back Heimerdinger but everyone else is like "this isn't what we signed up for we were promised our dead family" so they have their little fight their banter then they stop fighting, pull it together, and go find more dead people they connect along the way cause character developement then they finally bring all the dead bodies to Kindred (and one extra incase something goes wrong) They bring back all their relatives and lost friends and stuff Kindred brings back Jayce for Ekko Jayce is like "What just happened and where did Viktor go?" then Ekko starts talking to Kindred cause they have one extra body that they could fill with Viktors soul and Kindred is like "Nuh Uh" "Eeeny" points to Lux's dead family member "meeny" points to Ahri's dead boyfriend "miney" points to another undead person "moony" points to Jayce "…" "mo" points to the extra dead body in the back which surprise surprise Got filled by Jinx's soul so now Ekko is having so many mental problems at once And Jayce offers to go find a body for Viktor cause he ALSO invented a shitton of stuff But then Ekko can't deal with sticking around Jinx (who wasn't supposed to be revived) so he goes to find another body instead and the rest of the crew follow so the dead people are hanging out in the forest place with Kindred And Kindred decides to fuck with Jinx (and because this is my story, I can let them do this) They're able to shapeshift into dead people but only dead people, not living people Kindred is able to become the dead person of their wish (voice, looks, memories and everything) But they don't get possesed by the person, they just sorta use them as a mould of their choosing So what does Kindred do to fuck with Jinx? (this is the part where you guess)

She turns into fucking Isha, that's right baybee and ofcourse they don't speak while as Isha but does the little "Pew" To mess up Jinx in the brain (more than she already was) Why? Cause it's funny

RANT OVER, TIME FOR REASONING:

Kindred is a god of death, responsible for the passing of living beings to the afterlife. More of a function than a power, Kindred will come to those that are close to death, and take them to the beyond.

So my brain thought, what if they could also BRING PEOPLE BACK

I just dreamed about this last night so there probably IS some inconsistancies like:

"Well why did Kindred bring back Jayce instead of Heimerdinger for Ekko?" Cause the body Ekko brought was human, not a Yordle, it's like trying to make comfortable clothes out of brick, you can't do it cause that isn't how brick works, you can't bring back a Yordle in a humans body

UPDATE AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES OF THIS SITTING IN THE DRAFTS:

So basically there's more alternate reality time warp stuff and if I actually get to animating it, maybe i'd add alternate Jayce and Viktors in the background hanging out cause Viktor and Jayce's souls are entwined now so how cool would it be if Ekko is going through universes and suddenly ends up in he astral plane Viktor and Jayce are in this spacey place

and then Ekko asks Viktor about what universe he's in and then Jayce shows up and stands next to Viktor like "what're we talking about?" then soon Ekko realises that he's in HIS universe and that this is the original Jayce and Viktor so wait a minute … … .. Who the hell is the Jayce that Kindred brought back?? and then suddenly Ekko realises his crew isn't with him so he has to go around MORE universes to find them again cause their souls are scattered across different dimensions

omg my first platonic fic

this is a platonic showmaker & chovy (& faker) runeterra au with proplayers as league of legends champions (kindred). i used a lot of league of legends canonical lore and then spun it with my own ideas :]

idk how tumblr works again but i realize I can do a lot more long form messages here so I will probably use this blog to put my thought process about writing fics? i will put that below, but it has spoilers so if u wanna check it out probably read the fic first !!

i chose this song to name it after this not only because the obvious kindred relation with "the eyes of the wolf / the mouth of the lamb" but also because of the other lyrics!

"for so long I have waited / so long that I almost became / just a stoic statue fit for nobody" is very much the grey man coded.

"the vicious cycle was over the moment you smiled at me" would talk about the creation of the kindred, and lamb and wolf. they are each others escape.

"i know i know the way that it goes / you get what you give / you reap what you sow" well... kindred. they give death, and... ok imma stfu.

"and just like the rain / you cast the dust into nothing / and wash out the salt from my hands / so touch me again /i feel my shadow dissolving / will you cleanse me with pleasure?" i think speaks to the relationship between lamb and wolf again.

"nobody can say for certain / if maybe it's all just a game / when I open my eyes to the future / I can hear you say my name" is what I perceive to be the kindred and the grey man's relationship. :>

in the end notes i vaguely touch on the idea of the "LCK Mid" which I think is one of thee most interesting dynamics in lolesports. I've been wanting to write plat fics for a while to sort of explore. in my eyes the holy trinity of the lck mid would be faker, chovy, and showmaker. man I love them. also my grammarly keeps autocorrecting showmaker to shoemaker and its so annoying lmao.

but anyway they r SO INTERESTING! in this fic i tried to include a lot of parallels, from how showmaker as lamb knows more than chovy as wolf—because chovy hasn't won anything internationally unlike showmaker has. chovy's more hungry, because he hasn't won a world championship yet. not to mention their relationship with faker—each having a diff specialization and aspect of their gameplay. showmaker has said many times about how he doesn't want to be the next faker so i made him despise the grey man here. with faker as the grey man i again use the whole "alone at the top" trope because... oh my god I'm a sucker for that. he's got everything, but everyone hates him, and he is lonely. plus my ending + the cyclic nature of the world/of the esports... faker will always be there. it will always come back to him. there will be other midlaners, but its always faker at the end, or so it seems.

anyway! i had a lot of fun writing this fic. it was very challenging and out of my comfort zone because it was platonic and abt people I haven't written about before, and because its a lot more... abstract? it relies on parallelism and reading between the lines. idk. my brain is dumb. i am also dumb. i just vomit words on a google doc and pray for the best.

kuro's past is a well kept secret. he is older, much much older than he looks, and prefers not to speak of it. unless of course, it is to express his need to find the twin spirits of death. despite his every attempt to find them, they elude him, and show very little interest in his plight. the kindred honestly act as if kuro does not exist to them at all. which is... confusing for sure.

in his attempt to find a way to free himself of his immortality, kuro travels across much of runeterra. boggling the minds of various people he comes across.

honestly, i want to implement my oc vivian ( a cosmic / lovecraftian god ) in this just like i do with his base lore. who presents themselves as a benevolent deity. granting kuro immortality to enact their will. only to realize the evil he was putting others through, losing his faith, and being cursed without any way to die.

it's a bit up in the air on that...

the important thing is that kuro is on a mission, which has led him to every major continent in league. some of the biggest ones being targon, ionia, and the shadow isles. whether he finds death, or a new reason to enjoy living is very much so up to plotting and development of different dynamics.

i definitely need to read through some lore again, it's been a while...
