Hello Hello! I’ve just realized that I didn’t make an introduction post!
I’m Jay, just a queer dude in their mid 20s, who likes to write a variety of things! I post on kindle vella, mostly because I can get the motivation to work on the next chapter. My writing and reading tastes are all over the place, and I’ve tried dipping my toes into a variety of different genres!
My favorite to write has to be horror, mostly because I find it cathartic, but I also like romance and the way intimacy can build! I have so many notes on my stories of what happens behind the scenes, and I might post some of those along with wips. Extra insight to my characters, and such.
I currently have one serial novel that’s being published, called Pruning Shears and Spades which is available on both Kindle Vella and Fictionate.me! The first three chapters are free to read, so you can see if it’s something you’d like to read to completion!
There is probably going to be an update 1-2 times a month, since I have to pay my editor, but I think that makes it worth it, so my writing is cleaned up and easier to get through!

Hi there! I am reaching out to any serial fiction readers who would be willing to complete a short questionnaire focusing on why you enjoy reading serial fiction. This research will be used as part of a MSc final project and is completely anonymous. The questionnaire should only take 5-10 minutes to complete. I have attached the link below and would be very grateful to any who take part :)

Just a few of the images that I've used to promote my Kindle-Vella series, Detritus. Sometimes Bing AI is pretty fun.
(I only use AI to generate images, NOT the story. And the cover, I commissioned via GetCovers dot com.)

But when elves infiltrate the palace and abduct the wrong girl, Kyrenia's forced to team up with her arch rival--Ainslie's brother--on a dangerous quest to save her friend. Meanwhile Ainslie must find a way to use forbidden magic to stay alive in the hands of her arrogant, yet handsome elven captor.

The thing about Kindle Vella is that it is a dumpster fire, but not even for the reasons people think! (Realized this post is extremely long and about a topic few people care about so I'm dropping it under a read more now sorry)
There are some weird rumors going around (which is fair imo since the ToS is like notoriously vague & untransparent) but nothing as funny as the truth: it was an absolute fuck-up of a money pit on Amazon's part that totally failed to retain authors even after throwing random quantities of cash at (some of) us, and everyone just took the money and ran.
To clarify a couple of rumors I've seen: no, nobody signed a contract guaranteeing Amazon indefinite weekly updates!!! (Lol.) There are also, like, some pretty arbitrary rules about availability, but nothing close to KU's draconian exclusivity policies; my story was serialized concurrently on multiple platforms & has since been published wide in the same places as usual while still available on Vella.
What happened, I think, is that Amazon began offering these mysteriously generous bonuses* (calculated through some arcane and ever-shifting metric that nobody has ever been able to figure out) to attract authors. The problem is that Vella sucks to use for readers, too. It's in beta with almost no visible improvements in two years; it looks like shit, especially on desktop; there was no quality control for a while, so the charts were dominated by scammers posting AI-translated gibberish; there were all these weird glitches that made entire chapters of different stories randomly swap; it's actually more expensive than indie e-books in most cases, etc.
So there were not enough readers to sustain the bonus pool, which used to increase every month but has stagnated at $1mil for several months. Everyone got pissed about the drastic drop in income (mine dipped almost 50% between months despite performing better by all metrics) and left; now this website, which nobody uses, is a graveyard for unfinished stories. Even if they did promote it for once, so much of the stuff there is abandoned! I truly doubt it is long for this world unless they massively overhaul it, but it's clearly not a priority, so...
Anyway I find all of this very funny & think it's a bummer that people don't know about it & instead believe that a bunch of people voluntarily signed up to be permanent content generators for Amazon. Like, no... they were obviously trying to create a system of financial dependency to coerce authors into sticking around a la KU, but made such a bad website that they couldn't even afford that :)
*For reference, just to show how absurd the bonus system used to be: my first year on Vella, I made $100 in royalties (meaning people spent around $200 to read it in total), which is nothing. Only 150 people ever paid to read my work by reading past the sample chapters; of these, only 35 finished the first story arc. I made $4000 in bonuses that first year and stayed on the bestseller-equivalent list (typically bouncing around the top 50-150) basically the entire time. I still don't understand how or why & it still didn't stop me from jumping ship the moment my bonus decreased, but yeah... I made like $30 for each individual person who paid any amount of money to read my story. Incomprehensible.

FALLING STAR COVER REVEAL!!! I’M OBSESSED!
The cover art is by @imedmi on Instagram and they perfectly captured my characters and the mood of the story better than I could have imagined! Their work is amazing! Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience working with an artist.
I am OVER THE MOON finally being able to share this! Falling Star is a serial story I’m currently releasing now on Kindle Vella. IThe cover might take a few hours to update on amazon but it should be live by the end of the day!
The story should wrap up in November, and is reaching the halfway point soon. I never planned on writing this story, let alone self-publishing, since my goal for the rest of my stories is traditional publishing. But this has been such a fun experience and great for developing a writing routine and working with a critique partner! I’m so in love with these characters and glad that I get to share them.
I hope you enjoy the story as much as I do! Thank you again to all of my readers and everyone supporting me while I put out Falling Star!
You can read Falling Star here!

It’s always hard, building a new life from scratch. Having to leave the places that hold so many memories, good and bad. She still has her possessions, of course. All the little knickknacks and other things that she couldn’t or wouldn’t leave behind: a cool rock she found in a riverbed, pressed flowers tucked away in books, an absolutely hideous figurine that she’s inexplicably attached to. Her bed, covered in a mountain of pillows, plus an old quilt and a handful of throw blankets that she will end up twisting around her like a nest while she sleeps. A dresser and some tables. Clothes, most of which will end up sitting in the closet, unseen by anyone. Several pairs of shoes that she’ll try and fail to keep in order—before long they’ll be scattered all over the house. After a while, seeing her things around this place will make it feel like a house rather than just a space: temporary, and very empty.
I am so excited!!! I have my first chapter up and published on kindle vella. Edited thanks to @owlbearwrites and the link should be in the next post down

The tide was coming in. Judging from the landmarks, the man sprawled in the sand at low tide. No movement betrayed an escape from the rising tide. Jack leapt to the sand, fearing the man to be unconscious. Hoping it was not worse.
Jack’s flashlight cast the man in harsh contrast, catching a dull glint of metal. Tossing the flashlight aside, Jack plunged into the surf, pulling at the thick chain and waterlogged leather. Iron links wove around the man’s arms and legs, disappearing into the dark waters, anchoring the unfortunate soul between tides for a torturous death. The chains did not loosen despite Jack’s efforts. His hands froze in the unseasonably cold waves.
