Explaining subcultures: grunge

Grunge is a music based subculture with fashion and ideology associated with it. Some people criticize the label and believe grunge is just an offshoot of punk. Regardless it still left its mark on American culture

In this post I’ll talk about music, ideology, fashion/visuals, and media representation.

Music: Nirvana is a really well known band associated with grunge, but there’s lots of other bands. The music is important to the subculture so be sure to give it a listen

Ideology: grunge ideology is pretty similar to punk ideology, leading back to the claim by some that grunge is just punk repackaged. A lot of more left leaning beliefs and distaste towards materialism, the government, and big corporations.

Fashion/visuals: grunge “fashion” is actually anti fashion. Thrifted items, dulled colors, messy hair and makeup, etc. it’s largely about rejecting vanity, materialism, and societal standards of appearance, but also just about comfort and practicality. More feminine grunge looks often crossover with kinderwh0re. Makeup (if worn) is usually dark around the eyes and red lipstick was a staple. It was usually messy.
