“But You Know I Love You“

 Another history lesson. In the late ‘60s, early ‘70s, folk music was still pretty popular with teenagers and younger adults. Nashville - which by this point was run as much by the big pop labels as the little locals - tried like hell to make “folk-country” a thing. It never dominated but sold enough to hang around. This is basically what the labels were trying to do with Waylon and Willie, though Waylon actually had a modicum of success with it. This, for example, won a Grammy.

 For the most part, folk-country drew less from Dylan or the Byrds and more from Peter, Paul & Mary or Tom Paxton. Never really far out there or “up against the wall,” it was mostly about the harmonies and performing rock clubs instead of honky-tonks. Another key component was “the Nashville Sound,” with its strings and choruses and flat “Wall of Sound” production.

 Beyond Willie & Waylon, you had Johnny Cash’s penchant for doing theme albums about cowboys or trains, Bobby Bare covering Dylan while making fun of him elsewhere on the album, Newbury’s train songs and Jerry Jeff’s pain songs. Buck Owens and Porter Waggoner with Dolly Parton kept their traditionalist sound but had some folk-country hits.

 This is the follow-up to Waylon’s studio debut, Folk-Country and he did something similar with 1967′s Love Of The Common People, which is probably the best of the bunch. He was pounding these out for RCA Victor a couple, three times a year. That sort of pace, coupled with the iron-fisted contempt production had for him after Chet Atkins went back to performing and the fact they were screwing him out of money means there’s a direct line from this to Outlaw Country. Willie had actually quit music because of his relative lack of success but Bare had probably his most success. Go figure.

 As for the Kimberlys, your guess is good as mine. Far as I can gather, they’re a gospel-style close harmony folk-country outfit. It was two brothers and their wives, who were also sisters. It was based around one of the wives, Verna Gray Kimberly. Apparently, she and Waylon fooled around for a bit. They were bigger in Canada, and that’s all I can tell you.

 The song was written by Mike Settle, a former New Christy Minstrel now in First Edition featuring Kenny Rogers. They had the first hit with it, a very respectable 19 on the Pop Charts in 1968. Whisperin’ Bill Anderson had a Number 2 Country hit with it in 1969 and it led off Cissy Houston’s last album with the Sweet Inspirations, Sweets For My Sweets. Actually, it was a pretty popular song, with covers from everyone from Bakersfield giant Buck Owens the family bluegrass band the Stonemans, country chanteuse Sammi Smith to Southern Soul funky queen Barbara Lewis.

 Dolly Parton had the biggest hit with it, a smash Number One Country hit from her 1980 monster 9 to 5 and Other Odd Jobs. The record also topped the charts for ten weeks, and along with the movie of a similar name, made Dolly an across-the-board star, cultural phenomenon, and American Saint.

The wonderful new movie Hidden Figures (based on a book by Margot Lee Shetterly) tells the story of three black women who were crucial to the success of NASA’s Apollo missions in the 1960s. And now NASA is celebrating the many black women who play a crucial role in the space program today. In a series of videos, women like systems engineer Julie Williams-Byrd, project manager Antja Chambers, and astronaut Jeanette Epps discuss their work with NASA and how the women of Hidden Figures inspired them.

There was a period where I would be watching a cousin during her naps, and I think I was supposed to be doing school or chores, but there was a copy of Ella Enchanted that I could get my hands on and I just read it over and over again. Rarely straight through, that wasn't my modus operandum at the time, but I read it a lot, still.

Mostly Amazon, but I also always check the book section when at thrift stores, and I love getting books from the author themselves. A small portion of my collection is from Books-a-Million's clearance section, and I typically check for clearance books at Walmart, too.
