Hi!! This might seem like a bit of an out of the blue question, but did you once say that you liked Mafala and Kimbay as a pairing? And if so, could you share your headcanons!! And if it wasn't you, have a good day anyway
oh boy, that sure was me! sorry this has taken so long, i just needed to make sure i got all the key things about this ship that i love – oh, and if anyone has a good ship-name, then please tell me! anyway, thanks for asking me this! enjoy!
before the events of the musical:
kimbay has always been the second rock of the village, the first one being mafala, which means they often work together when it comes to helping the people of the village
they were childhood friends, kimbay was the one who introduced mafala to his wife
when mafala’s wife dies kimbay helps him cope with it by generally being supportive and urging her husband to take some of mafala’s responsibilities on his shoulders
she’s is a shoulder he cries on when everything just becomes too much, and she’s the only person in the village who has seen him cry (except for his wife and nabulungi)
and she takes care of nabulungi whenever mafala has his hands full, so they have a strong mother-daughter relationship, even though they don’t really voice it out right
kimbay has a miscarriage the first time she becomes pregnant and is completely broken by it
nabulungi doesn’t really understand it, but tries to be supportive anyway and (without her knowing it) serves as a light, along with her father and her husband, in the darkness kimbay finds herself consumed in
still, mafala does everything in his power to return the kindness kimbay showed him when he was in the same darkness, and urges nabulungi to learn some new skills and stuff
this is why nabulungi is so good at staging dances and theater and writing
a lot of her time as a child is spent trying to cheer up those she holds dearest, and what better way to do that than with a musical performance?
eventually, kimbay gets pregnant again and this time she gives birth to a beautiful baby boy, whom she insists on naming mafala
her husband agrees with her because mafala has also been a rock for him and he honestly appreciates mafala so much for helping him and kimbay through the tough times and for generally being a guiding light in the village
(there is absolutely no jealousy or stupid misunderstandings or anything like that! kimbay and her husband are faithful to each other and mafala would never ever try to break them up, first of all, because he is still dealing with the death of his wife, and second of all, because they at this point in the timeline still are only really good friends!)
at this point in time, nabulungi has blossomed into a young, kind, caring, beautiful, and perhaps a bit naive woman
and she loves mafala like a brother (the baby boy), who is only an infant
during the events of the musical:
right before sal tlay ka siti, mafala tells nabulungi to stay in the hut and not open up for anyone before he leaves
why would he leave his only daughter while a warlord is roaming the village? to find and comfort kimbay, a woman who just saw her husband get shot
he finds her at kalimba’s hut, completely broken and sobbing, and mafala feels his soul break for the second time in his life
he persuades kimbay to hand over little mafala to kalimba, who is well aware that they are about to have a very important and quiet conversation
kimbay, at first, doesn’t say anything, only cries and cries and cries, and mafala lets her do it and embraces her and lets her get everything out until she’s breathing heavily and there are no more tears left to shed
she tells him how empty she feels and he replies that she knows exactly what she means
and they talk
they talk the entire night, specifically about how she can cope with it, mafala telling her that she should try and focus on raising her child, because it keeps the mind and body busy and gives a life that, at the moment might seem pointless, a lot of meaning
he knows what he’s talking about and kimbay knows that
and it truly helps her
way more than she could possibly express with words
so instead she just holds him tight and he holds her tight and they comfort each other
and that’s when nabulungi knocks on kamiba’s door with a ‘text’ about how elder cunningham will help the village with his religion
and kimbay just gives her this fragile, heartbroken, yet somehow still warm and genuine smile, and says “okay” and let’snabulungi tell her and mafala all about it
now, as thing progress, mafala doesn’t see the appeal of the religion, he doesn’t believe in any of it, and he certaintly doesn’t like the way nabulungi seems completely enamored by the ‘prophet’
however, he sees the appeal of having kimbay smile and laugh along with the other villagers
he sees the appeal of having her nabulungi work closely together on a performance
he sees the appeal of kimbay finding a higher purpose in life, and for that he will always be grateful for elder cunningham, no matter how fucking weird his stories are
he also notices how nabulungi and elder cunningham seem to be growing closer and closer each day, but doesn’t say anything after a hushed conversation with kimbay (he does, however, send plenty of stern looks their way)
after the events of the musical:
oh boy, cunningham, or arnold, as nabulungi has asked mafala to call him, sure does spend a lot of time with his little girl
he doesn’t like it
but he tolerates it
arnold notices this and tries to impress him and shit
yeah, doesn’t work
a few months go by where everyone is generally happy and helpful, and mafala, now that there’s a lot of new hands to help around the village, allows himself (the privilege) to take some breaks from time to time and usually spends them helping kimbay with her children
mafala and kimbay sure do spend a lot of time together
nabulungi notices, but doesn’t think much of it, and then, one day, she walks by them and randomly hears mafala just let out this warm and genuine and adoring laugh and she just stops and is like
oh, okay, this is happening
and then she fucking bolts to kalimba and is like ‘this is fucking happening’ and kalimba is like ‘i fucking know, but don’t intervene, let them figure it out in their own time.’
but she, nabulungi being nabulungi, doesn’t really listen and is instantly making small plans
meanwhilearnold is very confused because he, at another point while mafala and kimbay where talking, walked up to mafala and asked if he could take nabulungi out on a date and stuff, like for the night, and mafala just said yes, barely noticed him
bacausekimbay and mafala are always with each other it seems
so, yeah, confusion
and when he tells nabulungi she just squeals and is like ‘i knew it! i’m so happy for them!’
and then they do all kinds of stupid shit to try and get them together or admit their feelings for each other, but both kimbay and mafala are oblivious
but then there’s one stuff that takes everything a little too far, and mafala confronts nabulungi and she just says, in the tiniest voice, ‘i wanted to help get the two of you together’
and mafala is just like ‘i am confusion’ and stares at her blankly, asks what she means
and nabulungi says, ‘the way you look at her. you look so in love. i’ve never seen you look at someone like that since mama’
and mafala’s brain just shortcircuts
he’s absolutely baffled but realises she’s right and just, well
there’s a lot of panic
kimbay means so much to him and he knows she’s still dealing with the death of her husband and he doesn’t want her to feel like he’s trying to push her into anything or only helping her because he likes her
and then he feels terrible because he feels like he’s betraying nabulungi and her mother
but nabulungi reassures her that she’s so happy he’s finding love again and that she’s proud of him
and then they have this long and important conversation about moving on and healing, and nabulungi explains to him that, even though she may always be his little girl, she is a grown woman who can make her own choices, and there’s a lot of crying and hugging and just feel-good family moments and fuck you if you think it’s too cheesy and cliché
give me all the clichés
but mafala still doesn’t want to, like
pressure kimbay or somehow ruin their friendship
so they just go on as they usually do
except now mafala is very conscious of every little think they do together
and how he kinda loses his breath a little when kimbay laughs
and how he blushes when their hands touch
and how he finds himself thinking of her a lot
uh oh, he’s got it bad
and they just get closer and closer
to a point where they are together so often, just helping each other and laughing and stuff, and nabulungi joins them too, even arnold sometimes
until kimbay asks mafala if she can move with him and nabulungi because she feels kinda lonely sleeping all by herself, and they could always renovate her hut and turn it into something with a different purpose
mafala is definitely not opposed to this and neither is nabulungi
so one day he decides to sort of, you know, ask her what her thoughts on finding someone new to fall in love with, totally asking for a friend haha *sweats nervously*
and kimbay is just like ‘yeah, i mean, we’ve been sort of dating for some time now, haven’t we?’
and mafala’s just like ‘wat?’
turns out kimbay has just assumed, after the more intimate moments of hand touching and the amount of time spend together, that mafala was about to ask her to marry him
she’s like ‘you know all that hand touching wasn’t accidental, right? right? i really like you. it’s been such a long time since i lost my husband, and i still love him, but i am allowed to move on and fall in love again. and i have.’
and then they have this really long conversation about learning to let go and allowing oneself to be happy
a lot of kisses and ‘i love you’s happen
and then they get married (of course the ceremony doesn’t go over smoothly *cough* nabulungi and arnold *cough*)
and you can bet your ass mafala – after a long talk about american traditions with arnold – asks mckinley to be his best man, because you can rip the headcanon that mafala is mckinley’s first nurturing and caring father-figure from my cold dead hands
that’s itthat’s all i have for nowif you made it this far, then please talk to me about these two, i love them so much, please, kimbay and mafala deserve so much good in this world

BOOK OF MORMON UGANDANS REFERENCE MASTERLIST
If you are interested in creating content for the Ugandans, please check this out for pictures, lines and more! --> LINK TO DOCUMENT
Read below for more info!
If you are an artist looking for images only, go (here!)
I decided to create a resource post (in a google doc, since it’s so detailed) for all the background Ugandans for any content creators who might need it! I hope it comes in handy. Let me know if you have anything to add that I might have missed (with sources preferably!) and I’ll do so!
The characters include: Sadaka, Asmeret, Mutumbo, The Butcher, Middala, Gotswana, Kimbay, Kalimba, and Ghali.
I tried to include a range of references from different casts.
I include each character’s lines, transcribed from the script. I didn’t include songs, with the exception of Joseph Smith American Moses (and the Hello Reprise for Ghali) – a lot of the lines are spoken in this number and I feel as if the parts they play reflect on the characters themselves.
The final section is notes I compiled based on what I think we see of the character and what I have personally witnessed from watching the show. I tried not to delve too much into headcanon territory, but just provide a starting point for any creators! :)
This took me a lot of effort to compile so I’d appreciate a like and reblog if you found it useful. Spread the word and hopefully this inspires people!

The Book of Mormon Ugandan HC master list
This is a master list made by me, @paladinofmoonlight and @vi-writes-bom
We had a lot of fun writing all these HC’s and we’re probably gonna come up with even more, so without further ado here’s the list
Sadaka: She loves creating pictures and drawings, and loves to sing; she also draws small doodles on paper and in the dirt wherever she can. As well as looking after the family’s goats, she is quite fond of animals and helps take care of the chickens after the butcher is killed. Good friends with Naba - very protective of her whenever danger is around, grew up with her and was there for her when she struggled with the loss of her mother.
She is Gotswana’s daughter, and they have a bit of a rocky relationship. They often don't get along and she has trouble trusting him after he nearly cut her clit off even though he says he was trying to stop her from being killed by the General. She tries to distance herself from him by swearing less, and being softer and kinder in general. She is very open and friendly to people she likes and often flirts to show her affection.
Ghali: He loves his bike and he loves dogs. He wants to pet all of the dogs. Rides his bike everywhere. Good at tinkering and fixing things. Has great taste in shorts. Collects rocks and arranges them in his yard/room in different patterns + arrangements. Naba’s best friend since childhood, they make little flower crowns for every Elder that goes to District 9. He was pretty much raised by Mafala since his mother and father neglected him since he was very young.
Gotswana: Probably owns one of if not the only generator in the village. Swears a LOT. He has a rocky relationship with his daughter, Sadaka, after the he tried to cut off her clit, but he tries his best to make up for it. He made a necklace out of rocks with Naba’s help for his daughter’s birthday. He really enjoys playing chess with Mafala and Ghali, in general he just loves board games. He owns 2 board games for himself, Backgammon and Sorry. He didn’t know the rules until the Elders showed up and taught him. He beats almost everyone in Backgammon.
Mafala: He often worries about Nabulungi and her future especially if he’s not going to be around to protect her and the majority of the people she knows will die of AIDS. Ever since her momma died he has tried to let her be a child, but also trying to teach her how to fend/protect herself. His biggest wish is for Naba to have a better life and for her to get out of Kitguli and get an education.
He loves books, once when his wife was still alive her and Naba went to market and found a book for him, it’s his favorite book. He loves to read for Naba even now that she’s a big girl.
He knows most of his books by heart and will often quote them.
Often makes really bad dad jokes and laugh at his own jokes.
He owns a chess board, but he’s not really sure about the rules, so he made up his own. One of the Elders tried to teach him how to play it properly, but he’d rather stick to his own rules. He often plays against Ghali and Gotswana.
He keeps a journal, it helps him organize his thoughts and it will give Naba a piece of him when he’s gone. He sometimes writes small letters/notes to his wife even though she is not there anymore
Nabulungi: Has a chicken called Dembe, she loves to walk around with it on her head. Babysits the kids in the village. The kids love her and she loves them, they are like her mini army. She plays soccer with them and Ghali. She loves stargazing, because she thinks if she looks hard enough she can almost see her mother looking down to her. She often sings up to the stars when she misses her mom. She has an abacus she loves to play around with because her mother gave it to her and it helped her learn basic math when she was a kid
Kalimba: She is super strong. She’s the big momma everyone is afraid of, she always steps in when people are fighting, and when she brings out The Slipper™ everyone just stops what they’re doing and apologizes to her. Everyone in the village respects her. She’s quite crafty, and makes pots out of clay and gives them to the other people in the village. She has an amazing sense of humor.
Middala: He/she is very excited when the Elders arrive and he/she wants to know everything about what is cool and modern, meaning he/she develops a close friendship with Arnold. They bond over Arnold describing entire sci-fi movies to him/her and acting them out and Arnold teaches him/her things like white boy dancing and dabbing. He/she has trouble with English sometimes and switches to a mix of Swahili when he/she is super excited about something.
Mutumbo: After the preachings of Arnold come to the village he slowly learns to break away from the harmful traditions of his family and learn to do better while finding his own beliefs. He has so much fun performing the pageant he becomes one of the biggest preachers of the book of Arnold, passionate about trying to teach people how to be better and becoming a really good speaker as a result. He becomes a strong leader figure and likes to give motivational talks for the others when things seem tough to inspire them to be strong.
Asmeret: Although she is quite young she already has a baby of her own to look after, and sometimes the others see her as too immature or carefree with it. She gives off the impression of a tough, loud and rude exterior, but beneath that she can be extremely soft and caring when she needs to be. She has helped Naba out a lot when she was growing up almost like a big sister, teaching her to be tough and not let the world get to her.
Kimbay: She has gone through some of the biggest struggles among the villagers. On top of having AIDs, her husband was killed right before her eyes and she has trouble teaching with very little resources. However, she has developed a strong optimistic attitude and never lets the kids see if she’s sad. She always says that things will get better and never gives up. She is very motherly and nurturing, and as her family has been broken by the loss of her husband she is always willing to take in others who also feel like they are missing family such as Naba. When Naba was younger she helped raise her a lot and teach her things and Naba views her like a mother. She taught Naba how to say ‘hasa diga eebowai’ at a very young age to help make her laugh when she was sad and Mafala was very annoyed.
Ship HCs
Ghali/Michaels: Ghali fell in love with Michaels the second he laid eyes on him, so naturally he focused all of his confused feelings into intricate gifts for the young elder, as one does. Michaels eventually noticed Ghali’s Obvious Pining and started to slowly but surely warm up to the young Kitguli boy.
Davis/Sadaka/Zelder: Zelder and Davis both developed feelings for Sadaka very soon after arriving, thinking she was completely gorgeous and loving her kind and funny nature. Davis was braver and made the first move, both of them bonding over their love of animals. Zelder was upset upon thinking they only had feelings for each other but over time both of them began to fall for him as well and eventually the three form a healthy and happy poly relationship.

((also, thank you for the compliment, im flattered!! by the way, these heights and the looks of each villager is not canon, some i just flat out designed out of nowhere, some are based on some actors. but you can use the heights!! another thing, the name darlesia isnt seen in the original book and has unknown origins but asmeret’s name is seen so,, i kinda used both their names for one character,,))

Curiosity Shapes You - A Kimbay & Mafala Drabble
“You know,” Kimbay says, “while she may have her mother’s sweetness, she has your curiosity.”
She’s talking to Mafala, but looking at Nabulungi, hands firmly wrapped around the handles of the basket she’s carrying. It’s a particularly hot day, but that doesn’t stop the people of the village from carrying out their usual jobs. Not even the more indolent teens are free from their work; Kalimba has made sure of that. Only the youngest of the children are exempt from work.
“Yes, you are right.”
Mafala doesn’t even try to deny it, which Kimbay can understand since, well, she’s right, and when she says she’s adding “Stupid curiosity” to the list of traits he’s passed on to his only daughter, he merely laughs. It’s an infectious laughter that soon has Kimbay join him, and it’s loud enough to gain some questioning looks from the group of women huddled together by the well, large jars of clay standing at their feet.
One of them, Mirembe, catches Mafala’s eyes and a warm, affectionate expression blooms on her visage as she gives him a meek wave. Mafala waves back, smile equally as tender, if not more.
Then someone in the group of women seems to have said something particularly witty for all the women laugh, and Mirembe turns her attention back to the conversation. Mafala, though, still looks as enthralled as ever. It tugs at Kimbay’s heart, the deep love and affection she knows are shared between Mafala and Mirembe and, for five years now, Nabulungi. She smiles fondly at said small, inquisitive girl.
Nabulungi, with a desire to learn and discover what has yet to be discovered, at least by her, is standing on her tiny legs on a patch of grass and reaches out for one of the pink flowers that grow there. She picks it up, breaking it off at the stem, and proceeds to stick it in her face most likely in an attempt to smell. It doesn’t take long before she emits a violent sneeze. Kimbay laughs; Nabulungi seems to have surprised herself, for she stumbles backward, landing in the grass with a soft thump. Her eyes are wide in what Kimbay can only describe as confusion, but then she appears to get over it and shoves the flower back in her face, letting out a delighted giggle.
Beside her, Kimbay registers Mafala’s compulsive urge to run over and check if she’s okay, but Kimbay stops him. She puts a hand on his shoulder.
“Let her learn for herself. She can handle it. She is, after all, your daughter,” she says, patting his shoulder.
Mafala sighs. “Am I that obvious?” Kimbay nods and he chuckles, rubbing the back of his head with a hand. “I guess I just know that curiosity can get you in trouble.”
Kimbay shakes her head in disagreement, then, gaze subconsciously moving from Nabulungi to Miremba. “I would not say it got you in trouble. It shaped you.” She squints in thought. “I would say it shaped your life.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean,” Kimbay continues, “that it is thanks to your curiosity that you and Mirembe found each other.” She nudges his side with her elbow, giving a poignant nod towards his wife. “If you had not fallen into that pit when you were little she would not have found you and would not have fallen in love with you.”
At that, Mafala laughs. “I was a stupid boy, eh. Took me far too long to realize.” His voice is tender.
“Yes,” Kimbay agrees, quite aware of the boldness Mirembe exhibited when they were all still children.
Mirembe was not good at hiding her feelings for Mafala, did not truly try to either, but he was an oblivious boy, still acting quite young for his age, and didn’t acknowledge it. Kimbay remembers going up to him one day, out of pure frustration from watching Mirembe’s relentless flirting without any sign of processing or understanding from Mafala’s side and flicking his ear. Mafala gave a shout in surprise (and perhaps pain, she isn’t sure) before he, rather meekly, asked why she did it.
“Because you are an idiot. Do you not see how Mirembe looks at you?” Kimbay watched as he shook his head vehemently, his eyes wider than she had ever seen them.
“How does she look at me?”
The curiosity was palpable and Kimbay couldn’t help but smile, revealing her teeth.
“Why don’t you ask her?”
Kimbay, honestly, isn’t sure whether or not she was a factor in the starting of their relationship, but she does know that Mafala asked Mirembe out shortly after their little conversation. So, she guesses that she did.
“Who knows,” Kimbay then says, “Maybe Nabulungi will one day meet a boy like you met Mirembe.”
Mafala seems to sour at that, his nose wrinkling and brows furrowing. “Perhaps,” is all he says, and Kimbay just smiles.
Everything, right then and there, is just wonderful in a way that things rarely are in Kitguli. People are still riding the wave of euphoria from their celebration of Kimbay and Kizito’s marriage and it’s been quite some time since a person has died a preventable death. Nabulungi is happy and healthy, and, as Gotswana has reassured her, so is the little bundle of love that’s starting to show on Kimbay’s stomach.
After a bit of silence, Mafala says, “Kizito is a lucky man.”
Kimbay nods. “So are you.”
It is the truth; they are lucky - as lucky as people in their situation can be.
However, as Kimbay is acutely aware of, luck tends to run out.
And, well, it does.
