Gone fishing
‘Each time this Australasian darter dived, I had no idea where it would briefly resurface; sometimes without food, sometimes swallowing it quickly, and, just this once, tossing a common galaxias into the air to ensure it went down head-first. The way the darter is rising from the water, with duck weed clinging to its feathers, reminds me of a sculpture emerging from its plinth.

Better Call Saul: The Verdict
I’ve been putting off writing a BCS wrap-up post, partly because I’ve just been too emo, partly because I just don’t even really know where to start. But I’ve delayed long enough, so let’s do this.
I thought the show struck a perfect balance of connecting to its parent show and standing on its own. It has a lot of the same themes as Breaking Bad—choices, identity, the stories people tell about themselves—but an overall less epic, more down-to-earth feeling. I really can’t choose between BCS and BrBa at this point. They complement each other so perfectly, and while they are very different shows starring very different characters, they feel like such a complete whole, each standing perfectly well on its own but made richer by the other. I’d love to write more about this topic one day.
Favorite character: KIM!!!!! God, she’s so amazing. Her ambition, her passion for justice, her mischievous streak, her troubled backstory, her crushing guilt in 6B (I LOVE characters who are haunted by regret), her ponytail. I would die for her.
Second favorite character: Nacho!!! It took me a while to warm up to him because previously I only knew Michael Mando as Vic from Orphan Black (NOT a likeable character) but I eventually I got over it because he was just so great.
Third favorite is the Magic Man himself. What a stroke of genius to take one of the most two-dimensional characters from the original show (he’s a great character, don’t get me wrong, but he doesn’t have much psychological depth because that just wasn’t the role he was created to fill) and use his two-dimensional nature as a way to create a compelling spinoff by showing us how he got to that point. Or rather, showing us how he got to the point of presenting the facade of Saul Goodman to the world.
I thought they did a great job setting things up for Breaking Bad without it ever feeling forced. One aspect of this is that there were several occasions where it looked (to me, anyway) like they were setting something up, but they ended up doing something totally different. Like in s1 or 2 (I forget when exactly), Jimmy is asked not to practice law under the name McGill because it could cause confusion between his practice and HHM. I assumed that that would lead to him taking a different name, but the actual circumstances that led to him practicing as Saul were completely different and happened much later. The show is really good at subverting expectations, not for the sake of being like “haha, we are smarter than you” but for the sake of telling a story that doesn’t feel contrived or lazy.
Ugh, I really want to say a LOT more, but I just can’t get my thoughts into words. Hopefully I can write more—a LOT more!!!—about both this show and BrBa in the future. For now, I’ll just say that while part of the reason I’m having trouble writing about BCS is because my brain just isn’t working very well at the moment, part of the reason is just that it is so profound a show, I can’t wrangle it into coherent thoughts.
Overall grade: A+
EDIT: I forgot to say that Betsy Kettleman and Daniel “Pryce” Wormald are two of the funniest characters ever invented.
#Better Call Saul#not really happy with this post because I feel like there is so much to say but I'm having trouble saying it :(#but I just am not up to the task of saying smart things at the moment#Anna watches BCS#Anna watches tv#verdict#x

better call saul bestie 🍒
the character i least understand:
hmm probably Gus atm! I don't think all of his actions make a lot of sense right now? but we've already bemoaned this a lot sooo yeah. get it together King!
interactions i enjoyed the most:
every interaction with Howard, especially Kim+Howard. each one of those is solid gold. Jimmy and Chuck were also amazingly well written, I honestly miss them. Mike and Jimmy got a lot of fantastic scenes. Nacho and Wormald were absolutely hilarious together, whenever Lalo is on screen I have a blast... Idk honestly! lots of really good material here!
the character who scares me the most:
none, I guess? I mean I guess Chuck sometimes a little but. fear is generally not an emotion I have while watching TV shows.
the character who is mostly like me:
I always dread this question lmao I got no clue who I even am, let alone what fictional character I'm LIKE
hottest looks character:
probably Nacho.
one thing i dislike about my fave character:
are we going with Nacho? or with Howard? or with Lalo? lmao especially for the first two it's like. just give them proper screen time, agency and plot relevance again pretty please. Lalo is golden, he can stay exactly the way he is. but let him do more too!
one thing i like about my hated character:
don't have a hated character :o
a quote or scene that haunts me:
"But not our Jimmy! Couldn't be precious Jimmy! Stealing them blind! And he gets to be a lawyer? What a sick joke! I should've stopped him when I had the chance!"
to my own surprise, when I think of my top BCS moments, I keep coming back to Chicanery?
a death that left me indifferent:
considering fandom's reaction to it, I'm surprisingly indifferent about Werner's death. don't get me wrong, he was cool, I liked him! (finally some proper German in an American TV show qq!) but to me his death felt very inevitable for the plot to move forward, and those are the deaths I don't generally mourn.
a character i wish died but didn’t:
we don't know who's gonna end up dead or alive just yet ;D
my ship that never sailed:
all my ships are sailing what are you talking about.

Asian American Families & Religion (06)
As previously described, family support has a significant effect on health outcomes for LGBT youth and adults. In LGBT Asian American populations, the importance of family and acceptance is compounded by cultural values that emphasize familial connections, filial piety, and heteronormative expectations for offspring. Touched on briefly was the role of religion; in this post, that will be expanded upon.
Traditional Asian religions, such as Shintoism or Hinduism, do not address homosexuality or other queer identities (Akerlund & Cheung 289-90). Buddhism, a religion practiced by nearly 500 million across the world (Liu, “Buddhists”), also does not address LGBT identities in traditional texts, though the Dalai Lama has previously condemned homosexual relationships as “sexual misconduct ("Stances of Faith”). This is largely irrelevant, however, since most Asian Americans today are Christian (Liu, “Asian Americans: A Mosaic of Faiths”), a product of relatively successful historical missionary outreaches. This can also be seen somewhat as a reflection of the popularity of Christianity, which comprises just over 70% of the American population (Wormald).
Religious beliefs and homophobia have been linked (Liu, “Religious Beliefs Underpin Opposition to Homosexuality”) and, while religion is not the sole reason Asian American families reject LGBT identities, it has a significant role. It varies from population to population – Koreans tends to be Protestant, Filipinos Catholic, Thai Buddhist, Vietnamese a split between Catholic and Buddhist, and Chinese a unique spread of religiosity and affiliation – and, accordingly, each population’s religious affiliation can be linked, with some consistency, to receptiveness to LGBT identity (Masequesmay 323). Overall, though, due to the strong tie between religion and family acceptance, LGBT youth of color report religious views of their families as a factor in family rejection (Kuper et al. 711).
Additionally, sexuality is rarely discussed in Asian American families due to both religious and cultural taboo; while most receive very little sexual education, including information about bodily processes like menstruation, some receive absolutely none (Kim & Ward 24). Queer Asian American youth and adults thus do not have the “luxury” of talking candidly with their families about their sexuality (Nadal 170), though subtle non-verbal communication may still occur. Parents convey ideals about cultural sexual values even through silence (Kim & Ward 25) just as they and other family members may silently be aware of their children’s LGBT identity (Nadal 170).
