DRAMA REVIEW | Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3 (2023)
Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3 is probably the weakest season and yet it manages to deliver great performances, character development and music as per usual. It ends the main story perfectly and even leaves the opportunity for another season open. Well done.
I particularly liked how Nurse Eun-tak and Dr. Jung had a chance to shine this season, with their own storylines, and not as supportive characters only. I also appreciate the full circle moment of having former cast members comeback for important guest roles. This story is no longer about Kim Sabu teaching his younger colleagues, but those former students teaching others now. Wonderful.
Full disclosure: it was difficult for me to watch this season without having to fast forward scenes featuring an actor who I know is a piece of 💩 IRL. I find contradictory this person was cast on a tv show where ethic behaviour serves at the backbone for Kim Sabu's teachings, personality and other characters's arc. Do better, show. Stay away from that one actor in the future.
You might be wondering, why comment on this? Because as a viewer it changed my experience of this drama. A drama I have been following since it aired its first season in 2016. On this season, when this particular actor was on the screen, I found it nauseating and annoying. Once he was gone, a little over midway in the season, things got far more interesting and the story even better. The show ended strong because he was not there.
If producers and writers are making plans for a fourth season, they should consider not hiring this man again. It distroys everything he touches.

2023 drama year in review
Okay, this year I'm really late. But better late than never, right?
Joining the pantheon of my favorites:
The Glory--The highs of this drama made me feel like I'd taken a hit of whatever not-found-in-nature strain of pot Sa Ra was on.
Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san--Sweet, heart-warming, gentle. Its kindness made me cry!
Revenant--Just a satisfying, scary, sad, immaculately produced, wonderfully acted ghost story. In terms of sheer quality it may be the drama of the year.
Quite good:
Bad Mom--I loved how complex the character dynamics were here and wish the show would have gone more in-depth into them? Like, this mother gave her son an eating disorder (and was overall incredibly emotionally abusive), and by the end all is forgiven. Mi Joo hides from Kang Ho that he is a father, telling their kids all sorts of lies about their dad, and ultimately everything's okay and they're going to live happily ever after (we didn't even get the scene of them telling the kids, which was truly all I wanted). I'm glad for these characters that love was able to triumph over everything for them, but the genuine darkness of the beginning (especially that first episode, yikes!) primed me for something that was perhaps a bit more messy that this ultimately was. Still, a really enjoyable watch.
The Matchmakers--This one snuck up on me! Fun, funny, and disarmingly sweet.
Moon in the Day--Persuasively makes the argument that dating a corpse reanimated by a 1500-year-old ghost is a great life choice.
Moving--A great show about how dads are hot. I can't believe I spent the whole show waiting for JIS to be reunited with his family and meet his grown up son and the minute he does the camera zooms out and that's it and we see nothing.
My Dearest--"How much amnesia is too much?" is, it would seem, a question this writer has never asked. And yet, it was still pretty incredible. I just wish the last few episodes had lived up to everything that came before.
Perfect Marriage Revenge--I love a drama that knows exactly what it is and is determined to have fun with it.
Not bad:
Crash Course in Romance--There's simply nothing better than grown-up romance. And nothing worse than pointless serial killer plots.
The Forbidden Marriage--Ridiculously charming when it didn't pretend to care about the plot.
My Lovely Liar--"Spoiler" really was a banger.
The Story of Park's Marriage Contract--Poor Joseon Tae Ha really got a raw deal, huh?
WHY??!?!?
Joseon Attorney--I liked the part where the king decided to kill WDH's sister and never apologized for it and everybody, including WDH, was totally cool with it.
Lady Durian--Every episode was an out of body experience in terms of pure, glorious weirdness.
Our Blooming Youth--Every episode felt very long and yet also like nothing had happened. Which is also what the drama felt like.
Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3--So bad. So dumb. But Kim Sabu continues to have a smile that keeps me coming back for more.
Secret Romantic Guesthouse--It's certainly a bold choice to have your male lead be your least compelling character and performance. Kang Hoon is a star and a half and it's time for him level out of supporting roles.
See You in My 19th Life--It was okay (SHS great as always), but once I read the synopsis of the webtoon, I couldn't understand why that wasn't the plot of the drama.

Romantic Dr. Kim 2
Another Han Seok Kyu outstanding role since the season 1. Plot was ok, relatable, but for me, the season 1 plot in terms of soundtrack and scenario was more dramatic, heart touching, tear jerker, well written story than the season 2.
But in terms of the supporting characters of Han Seok Kyu’s assistant, compared to Yoo Yeon Seok’s character, Ahn Hyo Seop’s character was cleverly emphasized as…

Yang Sejong’s Interview for Allets Star
[Yoon Gayi, reporter] The youngest son who grew up in a rich family. A warm and delicate church brother. If he smile with pure face, you want to meet this guy even once. This is the best discovery of 2017, Super Rookie Yang Sejong.
In his second year since his debut, he first appeared like a comet on the small screen in late 2016 with drama Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu. He has appeared in three dramas this year alone, including "Saimdang, Lights Diary" and "Duel," and "Temperature of Love," which end just recently. He has already become the main character in the fourth work since his debut. He also shared the outstanding level with seniors like Seo Hyunjin (Temperature of Love), Jeong Jaeyoung and Kim Jongeun (Duel). Is it luck or back to back? Nope!
It’s skill. He proved that his acting doesn’t like a rookie. Although He was enrolled in the acting department of the theater academy of the Korea National University of Arts, which is considered the cradle of the acting, not everyone who goes there will be recognized for their acting skills in such short period of time and becomes the star who steals women’s heart. Beside the acting skills learned from books and theories, Yang Sejong that I met in person has something special. I could feel the energy. If someone asks ‘Do you think he’ll become a great actor?’, I feel like I’ll naturally nod.
“I work on my own room in every projects. I try to create my own space to suit the situation in the play, and I try to keep the character's atmosphere as much as possible.”
Yang Sejong who finished the SBS Monday-Tuesday drama "Temperature of Love" well start the interview. Although the drama ended with a disappointing ratings compared to its popularity in the beginning, it received a lot of positive reviews for Yang Sejong's passionate portrayal of the male lead, On Jeongseon. In Korean dramas, the younger male code is a bit boring now. Nevertheless, Yang Sejong’s On Jeongseon was enough to listen to the hearts of many women. His delicate acting and perfect character analysis were the result of his brilliant performance.
It’s busy and busy. Yang Sejong who has been running like everyday for this past year said that after an ‘Okay’ in the last filming of ‘Temperature of Love’, the first thing that came to his mind was ‘I want to get rid of all now’. He spent almost all of 2017 in a '골방’ (a small room at the back of large room). In fact, there is a gap, one or two months, after the end of the work, but Temperature of Love started filming right after Duel was finished (so it was hard).
Yang Sejong used to create his own space for immersion (He called it 골방) whenever he played a character of the piece. No outsiders allowed. In the middle of ‘Duel’, similar to the atmosphere in the drama, he made the room messy like a garbage dump, kept the lights to the minimum while memorized the script and prepared the acting. As the ‘Temperature of Love’ began, another new ‘small room’ created. The ambience was neat and comfortable, the lights were all lit, one TV and one bed and four scented candles were displayed.
“I like to work in ‘the small room’. Of course, the character in the work is fictional, but I believe it exists somewhere in the world. In order to get closer to the character quickly, I make ‘the small room’ on purpose and choose the perfume that suits the character. This time as (On) Jeongseon, I’ve been able to open the windows wide to have ‘blue heart’.”
When he started filming, he turned his cellphone into the silent mode, he said he didn't even receive any calls from his family and acquaintances. Yang Sejong was throwing himself for acting in a way that he lived as a character in his work for the time being. As he lived like that, he is gaining the recognition and popularity. Is Yang Sejong happy now?
“It may sounds like I’m not grateful for things I have now, but until now I keep wondering if I’m doing well. There were a lot of good people around me... they’re leaving. I don’t think I’m good to my parents either, so I think I’m a bad son.”
Yang Sejong was given four days off after the last shooting of Temperature of Love until the interview began. He said he met a lot of people he couldn’t meet before. He said, "I thought I'd be thinking too much if I was alone, so I met many people and drank wine that I couldn't drink before. On my way home, I bought triangular kimbap and cup noodles at the convenience store and ate them. Well, I’m an eater... I ate all the things that I couldn't eat because of the shoot. I've gained 2 to 3 kilograms in a few days.
Yang Sejong, who has been working continuously for more than a year and has lived as various characters, the tiredness could be felt from his honest and calm words. The empty battery needs to be charged. Yang Sejong was looking forward to the upcoming year-end trip.
“I'll certainly depart at the end of the year. I want to go to Spain or Italy, Hongkong or Japan will be good too. I haven't decided yet whether to leave alone or with two best friends. I just want to buy a one-way ticket. If I go, I won't answer any company calls! hahaha.”
He seemed determined. Rest well and come back again to walk in the ‘good’ path of actor Yang Sejong.
“You asked a lot of questions about the next plan. I'm keeping all the next projects open. I don't usually think, 'I have to do something like this,' or 'I have to do a character like this’. I don't know what kind of character I'm going to return to, but look forward to it!"

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2 Episode 03-04
The show remains strong in its storytelling and character development. Scene by scene we are getting the bigger picture about the conflicts at Doldam Hospital and the people who work there. I like how the show is creating well rounded characters by putting them in situations where they are forced to do what’s right by them and others, and not choosing what its expected from people around them.
Eun-jae was perhaps the most develop this week because we got a glimpse of her reasons to becoming a doctor, how her relationship with Woo-jin started and what they were like through medical school. We also got to see how much she’s struggling to keep up when she’s barely enduring her career or the fact she gets terrible anxiety attacks before and inside the OR... and yet she shined at the ER.
I think it’s pretty clear to Kim Sabu, and to us, that Eun-jae might not be surgeon material but there’s no doubt she is an incredibly talented trauma doctor. She is quick to diagnose and proceed to treat the patient. It seems that she excels when she’s not put in situations where she there’s time to overthink her every move. Instead, at the ER she doesn’t have time to doubt herself. I am looking forward to see her journey as a doctor and finding the place she feels most confortable at the hospital.
But I am glad the show took its time showing what kinda of person she is, and deep down Eun-jae is decent and loyal. She’s stands up for what is right and protects the people she cares about. It might be the shipper in me, but I can see Eun-jae has been choosing Woo-jin since they first arrived to Doldam. She always went to look for him in order to do things together, and when it came to make things right, she had his back, even when it meant putting herself on the bad side of some of her superiors.
I could argue Woo-jin has done the same when he followed Kim Sabu’s orders to go into the OR to protect Eun-jae from further humiliation, or when he tried to talk to her in the bathroom. He knows, from the time they were students, how much effort she’s putting in and to see her in such a weak state, of falling asleep and anxiety pisses him off... because he has a soft spot for her.
I really want Doldam to be a new start from Woo-jin and Eun-jae. I think they have both found nothing but disappointment in the people who were suppose to be their mentors or how hospital politics have took over and distorted what it means to be a doctor.
On that aspect, I can’t blame the Doldam staff for questioning Woo-jin about whatever or not he was covering up for the other doctors in exchange of money, especially when all the Seoul doctos who showed up so far are nothing but mercenaries. The contrast between the people at Doldam and those from Seoul is striking, so much so, that Woo-jin was left speechless by the end of the episode when everyone apologized to him for misunderstanding or judging him.
A secondary storyline that bothers me a lot Is how it was hinted that President Yeo is sick. Please, say ain’t so because this man is the cornerstone on what Doldam is based on. Kim Sabu and the others wouldn't be able to practice medicine in the way they do if not for President Yeo.
Seems like next week we will find out more about Woo-jin’s past, something I want to know more of. Can’t wait!

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2 Episode 05-06
The new episodes were full of information about the characters and set up the real conflict of the show: the take over of Doldam.
It’s no surprise to anyone who watched the first season of the show that Dr. Do, now Director of the medical board, wants to transform Doldam in a high end resort/hospital for the rich. That would mean all those 50,000 people who visit town during the weekends are left behind because there’s no other hospital close by and they couldn’t possibly afford the new version of Doldam Dr. Do has in mind.
His first move was to name Dr. Park as the new President of the hospital, effectively kicking out Dr. Yeo (Kim Hong Fa) who has been protecting Doldam and its healthcare philosophy from the board’s politics. That is over. With Dr. Park at the helm, every patient will become a political move on the chess board. With doctos and nurses only attending those who will benefit them, that is after all the standard practice Dr. Park brings with him.
However, Kim Sabu is still at the hospital and those who support him will not allow this kind of behavior, I am sure. But let’s be honest: Dr. Park has a point. Kim Sabu’s heart is in the right place but the lack of a system doesn’t help the doctors or nurses so they can do their job properly. One surgeon running between two ORs at the same time it’s not only a demonstration of skill but also of lack of resources to give the patients the best medical care.
By the end of the show I would actually like to see these two work together, having found a middle ground, where Dr. Park can deal with the politics, get more resources for Doldam and still keep Kim Sabu’s healthcare philosophy. That way healthcare professionals and patients would have the best of both worlds.
As for this week cases, we got to see an entire new side of Woo-jin when he refused to help a man who committed a murder-suicide, just like his own father. It’s clear that despite being in the medical field he never really got any help himself for the trauma of having his father try to kill him and witness his mother died. I hope he can be able, through out the season, to get professional help or at least reach out to someone because he is so alone, it’s scary. Perhaps he can lean on Eun-jae (who has been trying to reach out to him several times this week) or Nurse Park (Kim Min Jae) who really got across Woo-jin. Are they bros now? Because I am all in.
Meanwhile, Eun-jae was on fire. Finally being able to stay at the OR and save several lives, including a mafia boss whose entire posey is now “indebted” and want to “help her out with anything”. I love it. I guess now we know who will take care of those tugs harassing Woo-jin.
Also, I think there’s more to Eun-jae wanting to help the woman who was beaten by her husband (repeatedly and publicly). When we were first introduce to Eun-jae I liked how she talked back at a misogynist superior, after watching her interaction with this case and how she reacts to violence I’m starting to think that perhaps she comes from a family with an abusive father. I could be wrong, of course, but that would also explain her close relationship with her mother and her need to please her to the extent of exerting herself when she suffered from anxiety attacks.
The ending was unexpected and yet that poor woman was under terrible pressure and it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.
This episode started with a standoff between the mafia and the police, and it feels like it ended like that too when the Dr. Park showed up with his staff. What do you think about Fridays at Doldam? Do you like how the characters are being develop? Do you have your own theories about them? Let me know!

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2 Episode 07-08
We are in the halfway mark of the show and following tradition there were many developments and everything went to hell.
To being with, every single case was heartbreaking, and all involved deserved better. From the murder suicide case, to the abused mother and his comatose kid, to the paramedic who died helping others. Every story was like a new cut in my tender heart and it broke me, so I really need next week to have an uplifting medical case. I *really* need for things to get better, for the doctors, nurses and patients to see a little hope after everything they went trough the past couple of days. Because may I remind you, all this started on a Friday and it ended basically on a Sunday or Tuesday, maybe? Not even a week full week passed before a tragedy followed another tragedy for our characters.
Speaking of which... let’s dive into what our characters were up to. I am starting with Dr. Bae (Shin Dong Wook) because what the hell dude? I understand that he accidentally came across Kim Sabu’s file on Woo-jin but WHY did he go to Eun-jae with that information. Did you guys realize he outright look for her, under the pretense of a dinner, to ask her about it? Or perhaps even tell her. If he is curious about Woo-jin’s past, shouldn't he be talking to him about it? What was up with that? Is he doing it on purpose? Did he already figured out Eun-jae didn’t know and wanted to share this information so she would reach out to Woo-jin? If yes, why? Does it have to do with witnessing Woo-jin being harassed by loan sharks? Is he a shipper? xD
I also need Woo-jin's loan shark problem to be resolved soon. I think the show has dragged it long enough and now that Eun-jae knows more about her “friend”, perhaps she can make a call to the local mafia, whom are indebted to her, and deal with it once and for all?
As for Woo-jin and Eun-jae (Ahn Hyo-seop and Lee Sung Kyung), the way the episode ended gave me mixed feelings. I ship them, of course, but he was totally trying to shut her up, push her away. I do understand, tho, where he was coming from when he said to her he doesn’t want them to get serious because then they would fall apart. It feels like Eun-jae has been the only constant in Woo-jin’s life that hasn’t been touched by his tragic past and he wants to protect that lightness she gives him. Woo-jin does not want to talk about his family but, as I mentioned before, he is scary alone and I think it’s time for Eun-jae to push back and get through his walls. I hope we get to see that next week.
The Cute Awards goes to Nurse Park and Dr. Yoon (Kim Min-jae and So Ju Yeon) who have a morning drama going on all on their own. He confesses and she swoons, and I am on the floor. Nurse Eom witnessing it all and poor Nurse Joo ending her one-sided love. This entire storyline was light and precious, and I am thankful for it because the two episodes would have felt too heavy if not for them.
Meanwhile, the hospital politics took a step back this week with only the small scene of Manager Jang (Lim Won-hee) meeting for a late night dinner with the two scumbags doctors trying to kick out Kim Sabu. I don’t believe for a minute Manager Jang would backstab Kim Sabu and I know, from the first season, he is a smartypants who knows how to get the things he wants, so I think he might be playing a long game with those two. We will see.

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2 Episode 01-02
It’s good to be back. But don’t think just this is a second season you will see the same story all over again, no. On the first season we were dealing with doctors who got too big for themselves and needed to come back to Earth, and most importantly the heart of their profession: taking care of people.
That’s what Kim SaBu is all about. He puts the physical, emotional and mental health of patients and colleagues above else, and I think it’s fair to say this season the new doctors need his help in order to become better at what they do but also at taking care of themselves.
Some people have asked me if it’s necessary to watch the first season in order to enjoy this new chapter in the history of Doldam Clinic. I say, no, it’s not a requirement. As I mentioned before this time it’s about other doctors, and although there are familiar faces the show does a good job introducing them to those who don’t know them, so they can understand their relationship with the other staff members of the Clinic.
I’m a little sad we won’t even get one cameo from the young doctors from the first season (Yoo Yeon-seok, Seo Hyun-jin and Yang Se-jong) but I get the actors are busy with other projects. And to be honest the new doctors are really interesting too, starting with Dr. Seo Woo-jin (Ahn Hyo Seop), a prodigy in his field clearly but who end up as a whistleblower for the corruption going on in the hospital he worked at. He’s got my respect for that, sadly the same can’t be say about his colleagues who all have branded him as a traitor. Plus, he also has a background story with some mobsters and needs money desperately.
On the other hand, Dr. Cha Eun-jae (Lee Sung Kyung) is hardworking about her job but clearly is dealing with anxiety attacks before going into surgery. I hope she gets a proper treatment now that she will be working under Kim Sabu. This is one of the reasons I love this show, they don’t shy away from mental health. Dr. Cha is also pretty cool and a woman willing to speak her mind when something is wrong, like when she called out her superior for being sexist towards her.
Woo-jin and Eun-jae actually have history. They went to university together and both excelled at every class, maybe even share some romantic past? We will see. I’m really looking forward to see how their relationship develops under the tutelage of Kim Sabu.
Also, for a second I thought Dr. Yoon (So Ju-Yeon) was falling for Woo-jin and I thought “OH NO, LOVE TRIANGLE” but it turns out she was totally checking out Kim Sabu and I just love her for that. LOOOOOOOOL.
I’m also particularl want to learn more about Dr. Park (Kim Joo-hun), who was on a bus accident with Kim Sabu. What’s up with him? Why does he look at Kim Sabu like that? Were they traveling together somewhere when the accident occurred or was it just coincidence?
Overall, the first two episodes of Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2 lives up to the first season but is it’s own drama at the same time. I can’t wait to see what Kim Sabu and co. will do next.

2020 dramas in review
I guess it’s that time of year. These are only dramas that I myself completed that finished their run in 2020 (so next year will include Queen Cheorin). It was not a great year for dramas, honestly, but I still managed to have fun.
Joining the pantheon of my favorites:
Crash Landing on You--This drama was just a pure delight. A swoony, grown-up romance, a fantastic ensemble, and the kind of life-or-death stakes that left me on the edge of my seat every week.
Kingdom (again)--Season 2 was even gorier and bloodier than season 1, but it was still surprisingly fun. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Quite good:
Forest of Secrets 2--It for sure failed to capture the highs of season 1, but I would watch Hwang Shi Mok drive around and constantly be interrupted as he tries to eat meals for 50 episodes.
Hello Dracula--A really lovely little special about community and family and, gloriously, lesbians.
The Legend of Xiao Chuo--I liked this so much more than I expected. There are many quibbles one could make in terms of pacing and editing, but I found Yanyan such a wonderfully compelling heroine, and honestly once I was hooked (after 15ish episodes? Once Mingyi becomes emperor and forces Yanyan to marry him), I truly could not stop watching. I was compelled!
My Unfamiliar Family--This one got me in the head more than the heart, but it was undeniably well-done.
Once Again--My family! This drama was the equivalent of a warm hug. Every weekend, I got to settle down with these people I desperately cared about, whose problems felt so real and personal. I was so invested in every character, and this is genuinely the first family drama I’ve watched where I liked the entire family. They all were wonderful in their unique ways. But the beating heart, for my money, was Cha Hwa Yeon and Kim Bo Yeon as lifelong frenemies who slowly but surely realized that, in spite of their hair-pulling fights, they were each other’s pillars.
Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2--It was so dumb. Much dumber than season 1. But I can’t deny Doldam’s magic! There’s something in the water. Or maybe it’s just Kim Sabu’s life-ruining smile.
Selection: Women’s War--I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: Jin Se Yeon is the sageuk queen of our time, single-handedly holding down the adult saguek genre, and honestly, God bless her for it.
Not bad:
The Song of Glory--The plot went around in circles, but it was gorgeous to look at, and the main couple was beyond swoony.
WHY??!?!?
Alice--When it was just a simple incest drama, I was entertained. As it progressed, it turned into a no-incest drama that made no fucking sense. But then the ending was still kind of incesty? But it for sure made no sense. I don’t know what this show was about, is what I’m saying! Everyone deserved better, especially the audience. Joo Won... next time, if you find out a drama is going to ask you to cake on old man makeup and do a silly old man voice, RUN!
Memorist--Ludicrous from start to finish. But Yoo Seung Ho and Lee Se Young are so freaking pretty... Please let them reunite in a sageuk!
