Entertainment Spotlight: Diona Reasonover, NCIS
If you’re a fan of CBS’ veteran crime drama NCIS, you probably recognize Diona as Ducky’s (David McCallum) graduate assistant, Kasie Hines. On the film front, you can soon catch Diona starring in the indie comedy Film Fest, which follows a group of struggling filmmakers who travel to an obscure festival to sell their movie. An alumna of the CBS Diversity Showcase, her series acting credits include 2 Broke Girls, Grace and Frankie, Superstore, Girl Meets World, Comedy Bang! Bang!, and Clipped. As a seasoned writer, Diona’s credits include the Emmy-nominated I Love You, America, I Love Dick, Adam Ruins Everything, and the 32nd Film Independent Spirit Awards. She lives in the Los Angeles area with her wife and cat, Engine Cat. We got the chance to ask her some questions:
If you were to create a TV show or film, what would the title be and what would it be about?
I want to create a podcast called “Replacement” where I talk to people who have stepped in to replace someone and what that’s like. Second spouses, Vice Presidents who’ve had to fill in. You know who I’d love to talk to? Daphne Maxwell-Reid. She became Aunt Viv on The Fresh Prince after Janet Hubert left. I think we’ve all felt like the replacement or the newbie at some point.
What song(s) are you currently playing on repeat?
I fall hard for songs. Two months ago, it was “What we Are” by Beginners. Last month was “Cruel to be Kind”. I’m on a Whitney Houston kick rn.
Do you have any secret skills or talents?
No. What’s the point of having a talent and keeping it secret? Put yourself on display, baby!
If your cat could understand you for one minute, what would you tell it?
Quit stalking the mailman. He’s done nothing to harm you.
What are you most excited about (in work and/or life)?
Everything. My life is so much better than I imagined.
Thanks for taking the time, Diona! Catch NCIS on Tuesdays at 8pm on CBS.

Diona Reasonover photographed by Kim Newmoney (2019)
"I think Kasie has really gotten much more comfortable. I've enjoyed watching her not tripping over herself so much and starting to form really cool relationships. She and Jimmy are getting to be these really funny friends.
I think people are starting to notice the difference in characteristics [between Kasie and Abby]. With the nature of the job of having to dish out a lot of information and a lot of scientific words, it felt reminiscent of Abby – but I think people are really starting to like Kasie.
I'm really starting to like Kasie. I hope they like going on this journey with me."
On Reasonover's dream wishlist is for Kasie to become a board game aficionado ("...because I am in real life a board game nerd, and I'm trying to get board game companies to send me more games!"), but Kasie has also been resonating with fans from a representation perspective and being a black woman working in STEM.
"People say things to me like, 'Wow, you remind me of me, I was the nerd in my family'," Reasonover said.
"I don't know how to describe something that is this gigantic in my life. I never expected any of this. I didn't come out to Hollywood thinking, 'Oh, I'm going to be on the number 1 hit drama'. You go and you try and you hope, but to get to achieve something that's been such a dream, it's mind-blowing.
It's very nice to represent a woman of colour in STEM, even if I am technically not in STEM!"
Reasonover added that she hopes that the industry continues to make progress.
"When I was first out here auditioning, it was like for gangbanger number 2," she shared. "But now I think people are starting to move away from the idea of type in terms of physicality and more in terms of personality and what you can portray and what you love to do. The fact that people are starting to get to write roles for themselves too has also really changed the landscape.
We definitely still have a long way to go. I personally would love to see more representation for Native American actors, for actors with disabilities, for older actors – there's still definitely some places to go.
I hope that as we continue to push for it and say, 'Hey, I didn't see myself in this role before but thank goodness I'm doing it', people will also say, 'Well, who else can we see in this role?'"

Four years ago, friends Dave Ross and Matt Ingebretson started a comedy show at their local bookstore, Stories Books & Cafe in Echo Park. "1716 Sunset Blvd. Quaint store offering new & used books plus coffee & food, with an outdoor patio for special events (storiesla.com)." That outdoor patio is used for a very special event - our event, a weekly stand up comedy showcase called Good Heroin. With producers Olivia Doud and Shannon Cloud, we take over the outdoor space every Saturday night to joke around and show off the funniest people we can think of. Our pal, photographer Kelly Dwyer, has been capturing the show from Day One. Looking back at 4 years' worth of photos sure warms our hearts, so much so that we are putting on a special Four Year Anniversary show at The Regent this Saturday, January 12 8:00PM. All ticket proceeds benefit fellow comedian Jason Saenz’s Health Care Fund. Comedians featured: Todd Glass, Nicole Byer, Aparna Nancherla, Punkie Johnson, and Chris Charpentier!  Look at these gorgeous people. Us included. We hope to see you there! Tickets: ticketfly.com/event/1810664 *** Dave Ross has the special power to make his shows feel like rock concerts. Not only is he recording his debut stand-up record across two shows on February 12 at The Echo (BUY TICKETS at davetotheross.com), he's also taping a Comedy Central Stand-up Presents spot Tuesday January 22 at the Satellite - and tickets are free! Matt Ingebretson created the hit series Corporate with Jake Weisman and Pat Bishop on Comedy Central. Corporate S2 premieres January 15, and we'll get a sneak peak at the premiere episode this Saturday at the Four Year Anniversary show! *** All photographs and portraits are shot by either Kelly Dwyer (kellyrdwyer.com) or Kim Newmoney (kimnewmoney.com)! Poster art by Jack Sjogren (jacksjogren.com) for the last 2 years! & Isaac Benavidez (isaacbenavidez.com) drew our posters in our 2nd year! Our weekly show at Stories resumes on January 19, 2019 and is every Saturday night at 8p.

🎀 Content // mentions of abuse 🐘 💙 ChildHelp National Child Abuse Hotline // 1-800-422-4453 💙 Rape Abuse Incest National Network // 1-800-656-4673
💛💛💛 photographed by Kim Newmoney 💛💛💛
I'm back to talk about another step of the journey. Shame. Personally I never believed what my sexual assault was my fault because my life was threatened and I was so young. I couldn't blame a child, and I feel a certain sense of confidence because I did my best to communicate despite being a child.
But the years of subsequent abuse from my caregivers was something I had so normalized that I didn't register it as wrong. It took years until getting to talk to a professional to learn what abuse looks like. My abusers essentially blamed me for my health issues I exhibited as a result of being abused. As a child I was shamed for having symptoms of PTSD, insomnia, chronic nightmares, mood shifts, and paranoia instead of taken to a doctor.
In the past couple years as I gathered courage from safe people in my life and attempted to reach out to my family for support, I was met with isolated and strained text-based conversations, one phone call from a sibling, and no open dialogue within the family. As I tried raising awareness and advocating for changes within the family in favor of communication, safety, and preventing further abuses, my pleas were met with silence, or contempt. The shame is not mine to carry.
The entire dynamic was framed as "Eli's problem" not as "the family's problem" which is an unbearable pain as a survivor, and a narrative I struggled to fight against after the years of being spoon-fed this narrative. However it's a lie. Child sexual abuse affects the entire family, especially in cases of incest abuse. A family that does not wish to face the reality is not a safe family but a community of trauma, enabling abusers and failing to protect or support survivors. There can be no recovery in that environment for survivors. The shame is not mine to carry.
Remaining complicit to known harmful behaviors is unsafe behavior in itself. A single abuser cannot thrive on his own. He needs people willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, to tolerate, enable, and make excuses for him--that is the very nature of a community of trauma. Until harmful behaviors are not tolerated and called out, until the focus is taken away from sympathizing with abusers in favor protecting and supporting survivors, until establishing prevention practices, there can be no establishing safety and recovery. The shame is not mine to carry.
It's incredibly taxing to write to your own family to plead for empathy when you know that in a healthy family they should be your immediate support system. But now I'm working to remember every day: I am not wrong. I am not wrong for wanting those in my life to exhibit safer behaviors. I am not wrong for expecting a better life moving forward. I am not wrong for telling my story. I am not wrong for recovering. The shame is not yours to carry.
Ways to Support // This project brings up a lot of emotional and physical symptoms writing about trauma so if you’d like to support, consider buying me a coffee: https://ko-fi.com/drawing

Diona Reasonover photographed by Kim Newmoney (2019)
Actress, Diona Reasonover Opens Up About Her Experience on NCIS, Her Role in the Indie Comedy, Film Fest, & Writing!
Actress, Diona Reasonover completely stole the show on CBS’ veteran crime drama, NCIS when she made her appearance as Kasie Hines on the 15th season of the show. Now in the series’ 17th season, we haven’t stopped loving her! Next, Diona can be seen starring on the big screen of an indie film titled, Film Fest. We caught up with Reasonover to discuss her experience thus far on NCIS, her passion for writing, and much more!
Tell us about yourself. What made you want to become an actress?
Well, I’m not exactly sure when it happened. I just knew I liked acting and no one every tried to talk me out of it. I was really lucky because there was a very good Arts program where I grew up. I decided that I wanted to train with them and I got the opportunity to! When I got to college, I studied it enjoyed it, and I haven’t stopped since. I wish it was some fancy story but it’s really not (laughs).
How has your experience been thus far on NCIS?
It’s been great. It has honestly been very incredible. Everyone is so nice and I did not think that I would be on such a big show! When you move to Los Angeles, you hope that you’ll be something but you never know you’re going to be on the number one drama in the country! We get millions of viewers, it’s insane! I recently checked the initial numbers and it was like ten million viewers! That’s huge, ten million people saw my face!
Tell us about your role in the indie comedy, Film Fest.
I play Alex Davis who is this indie producer. You find out throughout this film that she’s never actually produced anything (laughs). She’s really hoping that everything goes well and is pretty desperate for people to think that she is competent. It’s a great role and it’s a lot like Kacie in NCIS. They both care so much and they’re people pleasers in a way (laughs) in a good way. It’s different because Alex will fall apart much more so than Kacie would, she’s very emotional.
Matt Cook and C.J. Vana were actually cast for Film Fest. They worked with me in Clipped. They were telling Marshall about me. That was a little Clipped reunion, I love those guys, they’re great!
Writing is also one of your passions. What do you hope to accomplish in that area of your career?
I don’t know, I think I’m just going along for the ride. I have already accomplished more than I thought I would. I never thought that I would be a television writer. The fact that I have written four or five episodes of television, that’s incredible. I never thought that it would happen. I want to write a movie, does Hollywood need another movie? (Laughs).
What can we expect to see from you in the future?
Ooh, I’m so bad at future planning. I don’t know, I hope to surprise you (laughs)!
For more on Diona Reasonover, be sure to follow her on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter.
