Now N New _ 하나되어 (1999)
youtube
Once upon a time in 1999, various stars came together to create a project song called 'Become One'. The purpose was to raise funds to help those affected by the 1997 IMF. The proceeds were donated to the unemployed relief fund.
I know I am a bit late to this party, but this was a real treat to watch and listen to, especially seeing your favorite artists come together in a song for a good cause. This really reminded me of the 'We Are The World' era.
This music video contains at least 99% of my favorite singers... but for some reason I totally geeked over Jaewook (Position) being included... xD (He looked so cute)
Along side Position, I really enjoyed seeing my other favorite ballad singers like Im Changjung, Lee Seunghwan, Shin Seunghoon..
Kim Hyunjung, 1TYM, Kim Kyungho, Lee Junghyun, Jo Sungmo, Uhm Junghwa, Lee Seungchul, Jinusean, Fin.K.L, Jekki, etc.. Were also included... so many of my favorite stars in one!
So many stars, but my eyes always go to Lim Jaewook... xD You can also notice that this is the same era of 'Blue Day'. I loved his hair during this era! He looks so cute!
Enough talk about Position, but this project collaboration was truly revolutionary. (Majority) of the popular stars at the time came together for a great cause and to help those unemployed from the 1997 IMF. It is really bittersweet.
Apparently, in 2021, stars of the current generation came together for 'Now N New 2021' version of this song. I haven't watched it yet, but honestly I am not that interested in the modern version.

1996.04.04 TV Times Magazine - Kang Wonrae, Koo Junyup (≈CLON) article
Scans credit: yours truly!
Kang Wonrae & Koo Junyup
We were born with the mission to revitalize dance music
[Tomorrow's star] Tak2Jun2's Koo Junyup and Park Mikyung's partner Kang Wonrae have come together, but their group name hasn't been decided. The two are well-known dance machines who hope to hear the words "you were born to do dance music." Coverage: Lee Gyeong-hui
"I can't say that we're a new group—it'd be more accurate to say we've been apart."
Just as the rumors said, Koo Junyeop and Kang Wonrae, who are so in sync it's like they're one singer, have formed a group and are preparing an album. Koo Junyup, all too known from Tak2Jun2, and Kang Wonrae, who brought fun to Park Mikyung's "Eve's Warning" performances as her partner, are already well-known dance machines. No, now it would be right to call them rappers.
"Solo singers can adapt easily to stages on TV shows, but it's hard for groups to coordinate. We can say we're sure we've overcome that difficulty. We're especially proud of our skill in improvised performances."
The two, whose goal is to hear that "they were born with the mission to revitalize dance music," are highly confident in their music.
Proud of their skill of improvised performances
Their group name hasn't been set yet. They plan to release their album in early May. The reason they're being revealed to the world so early is to publicize themselves after they've gotten all the fame they can get.
Koo and Kang's team-up can't be ignored. Their characters can't be something the music industry wouldn't worry about. Furthermore, with their album releasing under Line Production, they've become part of the "royal family" alongside Shin Seunghun, Noise, and Park Mikyung. Fans already know that Kang Wonrae was in Line, but Koo Junyup first came in about 1 year ago. An art school alum, Koo also designed the album covers of his peers. The covers he's designed include Park Mikyung's 2nd album, Kim Gunmo's 3rd album, DJ DOC's 2nd album, and Kim Jungmin's 2nd album. These were all hit albums, but they also drew attention for their unique designs. Kang Wonrae choreographed for all of the "Line family", including Kim Gunmo. Their chronicle of star-related stories is never ending.
The two first met in high school, both attending Gyeonggi High. Although they only became classmates in senior year, they both majored art in college.
While Koo Junyup never loses when it comes to dance, Kang Wonrae has a longer history with the art. To borrow Koo Junyup's words, he's "amazing." Kang first decided he would become a dancer in 6th grade. He picked dance up while his older brother researched through watching TV, and made his brother, who now works as an interior designer, quit dance.
Let's tell an interesting story about Kang Wonrae's family. This story also appeared on a TV quiz show last year.
"Kang Wonrae's older brother is named Kang Wondo. What is his younger sister's name?" (Someone answered "Kang Wonsoong"[1] and got suspected of having an IQ lower than 50. It definitely wasn't a TV Times reporter.)
The answer is Kang Wonmi. Kang Wonrae's father, who recently retired from his position as director of a car company, really loved music. Kang Wondo, Kang Wonrae, Kang Wonmi. The answer clears itself up if you take "Won" out from their names. Doremi. But because he couldn't find a Chinese character with the sound "re", he changed it to "rae". Surprisingly, not many get the answer right.
Want to be received as "cool dance music"
The new style that Koo and Kang profess is dance music that incorporates Miami rap. They're thinking of taking a casual approach without too many bells and whistles. As for their outfits, they're planning to go for a free style. Definitely no uniforms. The group's lyrics are close to "wholesome music,"[2] and their music has an exciting, cumbia-style rhythm.
There is a song in their album, though not the title track, that starts with "the frog can't remember when he was a tadpole, the loach muddies the clear water." It was made to show off Kang and Koo's individual colors. Kim Chang-hwan, known as a hit-maker, directed the whole album. Kang Wonrae and Koo Junyup explained their music with one sentence:
"I think rather than just being good songs, it will be received as 'cool dance music'."
–––––––––
Translator's notes (marked with small-script numbers in the text)
Wonsoong = short for "wonsoongi (원숭이)", the Korean word for "monkey".
"Wholesome music" refers to songs that had to be put on the end of Korean LPs from the 70s to 80s, which Urimalsaem describes as "songs that can be sung by anyone, regardless of age or gender." As the name implies, these songs usually have wholesome lyrics that promote "enlightening" ideals.

Deep Dive: K-Box Color Albums
K-pop’s success in Japan was not overnight. Instead, as I had begun teasing out in my post “Building the K-Pop Brand In Japan,” it resulted from a years-long project and the combined efforts of multiple parties, including agencies, idols, and Korean government agencies, whose efforts have been mainly forgotten. Indeed, even well-intentioned admonishments to pay homage or thank those that have made k-pop’s current place in the Japanese market possible only focus on post-2009.
This post is not arguing for greater recognition of the aforementioned groups or their efforts. Instead, this is about narrowing the lens to look at a particular relic from k-pop’s brand-building years in Japan, which I have only briefly touched on: the compilation albums, K-BOX ~Korea Music Collection~ Red and K-BOX ~Korea Music Collection~ Blue.
Released simultaneously by Victor Entertainment in March 2003, the K-BOX albums featured a combined 24 different songs from 24 artists, divided according to the genre, each represented by a color. Red, named for a color associated with energy and passion, represented dance-pop and featured idol groups and rock bands. Meanwhile, Blue, a color meaning peace and calm, featured ballad and R&B songs, mainly from soloists. This color theme would be used as a design motif for the albums' design as well, with the cover art aping the Pantone swatch format down to the use of Helvetica bold. The back of the albums also featured oversized letter ‘R’ and ‘B’ against red and blue backgrounds, respectively.
Although some artists included on the compilations had or were promoting in Japan in 2003, their Japanese releases are not what made it on these albums. In keeping with the ‘Korean Music’ of their title, all songs were in their original Korean, with Japanese translations (and blurbs about each artist) included in the liner notes.
That also was the point of these albums, as well. They were intended to introduce a slice of Korean music to a new audience. Hence the use of the compilation album. As k-pop groups today who release compilation albums before or immediately following their debut in Japan have figured out, the format is ideal for introductions to new audiences. They can offer a best-of, or as Victor Entertainment did, a sampler of the current moment in k-pop, showing that it was not limited to a specific sound or group, but the opposite. It was dynamic, with a much greater range.
On that note, and as well as in celebration of the K-Box albums’ 20th anniversary, I created YouTube playlists re-creating the original tracklist for both albums here: “K-BOX ~ Korea Music Collection: Red~ Playlist” and “K-BOX ~ Korea Music Collection: Blue~ Playlist”.

Note
I'm not exactly a new kpop fan (2008, 360pwol), but I'm new to broader Korean music and I'm considering branching out into 70s/80s/90s/early 00s Korean artists that aren't idols/are precursors to today's idols. Do you have any recommendations ranging from individual songs to artists?
My taste in music fluctuates more than my hormones, so I'll do my best to describe what I'm attracted to musically.
Men: higher-pitched vocals
Women: lower-pitched vocals
What I seek out most: emphasis on melody, the entire 80s & 90s aesthetic from sound to style, power ballads as opposed to soft ballads, accompaniment instrumentation (rock, big band, etc.), instrumentals, and experimental key & time signature changes.
I sincerely apologise if this is a tall order ajdjjfhf you don't have to answer if it is, I'm just in a music-seeking mood and unsure where to start with Korean music specifically. And many thanks, as well.
omg this is so broad but so specific. hm. i’ll just list a bunch of people i’ve listened to and put asterisks next to the ones that match most of your specifications.
first off this is my older korean music playlist:
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2ZBq70xdqix0lOqvAkjnhT?si=2WFCqMXaQVqJqyCSSJmhog
ballad singers:
kim bumsoo*, kcm*, lee seunggi, yoo jaeha, shin haechul, kim gunmo*, yim jaebum, lee moonsae, cho yongpil
lena park, sohyang, insooni, yoon mirae*, lee sunhee, lee sora*, shim soobong*, sungwoojungha, lee jungmi*
rock bands:
boohwal, panic/lee juck, sanullim, sinawe, witches, crying nut, the geeks, jaurim, busker busker, toy, yb
precursors to today’s idols:
uhm jung hwa*, lee jung hyun, baby vox, finkl, ses, early brown eyed girls, sg wannabe, cool, solid, roora, dj doc, turbo, seo taiji and the boys, hot, god, koyote, shinhwa, nami, sobangcha
i recommend looking at the 3 most famous songs for each of these acts i’m sure you’ll find some artists you like! most of them i haven’t listened to deeply i just know a few songs so if you’re interested in some artists and want song recs send me another ask! also i didn’t include any trot because i don’t listen to a lot but it’s a huge part of korean music so if you want some trot recommendations lmk!

Girl group main vocal crowned and revealed on King of Mask Singer
The next King of the Mask Singer has been crowned! Lucid’s main vocal Shin Hyoyeon proves that little things pack a punch after winning in the most recent episode of the competition show.
Stumped by the vocal prowess of Give A Taste of Spicy Miss Pepper, panelists were shocked to discover that the woman behind the voice was the main vocal of Dimensions’ most recently debuted girl group Lucid, rather than what most expected to be a professional vocalist. Enchanting the audience first by winning out in a battled round duet performance of “Super Star” by Jewelry, 71-22, she left the panel speechless with her soulful covers of Kim Gunmo’s “Love is Gone” and Kim Chooja’s “Faraway, My Honey”.
After her reveal on the latest episode, she further endeared the audience with tears of joy at her unexpected victory, promising her fans and viewers alike to continue to work hard to be a singer that they can be proud of.
When questioned at the end of the episode, Hyoyeon shared, “Singing is the skill I’m most confident in and I always want to find ways to share more of it with the people who support me and people who might not be familiar with Lucid - there was a point in time where I wasn’t even sure if becoming an idol singer was right for me, and I felt that I was lacking during the time we got our first win, so I joined with the thought that I should prove myself.” As panelists joked around, she was brought to tears again by the sincere compliments towards her skill set, one panelist even going so far as to call her a “top female vocalist among idols.” Humbled, she bowed deeply, thanking the crowd again for enjoying her performance and going on to make a promise. “With this confidence, I’ll improve even more and come back to win again.”
COMMENTS
[+1,012, -39] but isn’t she so cute?? she cried after winning, cried after getting praise, you can tell that the lucid girls are still young
[+716, -63] hul…. isn’t her talent wasted in an idol group?
[+271, -32] wow, i really didn’t think we’d get another powerful main vocalist in this generation…..
[+62, -21] it’s such a shame lucid’s concept is such a mess, they’re all talented and suit the power innocence concept well
