“Loud and Wrong”
Characters: Kevin Atwater x Black!Reader.
Summary: Kevin and wifey have a minor disagreement.
Warnings: Fluff and a dash of spicy talk.
Word Count: 2,000+.
A/N: Well, lovelies. I've been having sleepless nights lately. Dealing with some ish. Life be life-inggg and it's keepin' my ass up at night *le sigh*. Tired of my mind racing. So to cut off intrusive thoughts I gave it a go and worked on some of my WIPS. My head quieted down enough for me to finish one. I've got some other things I've been working on as well. Fingers crossed I can finish some other works🤞🏾. This isn't heavily edited, but I hope you still enjoy it my loves🫶🏾. Here's to hoping I haven't lost my spark as a writer 😩😆🤷🏾♀️.
“The disrespect in this household is at an all-time high. Just going to sit there and eat in my face like that.”
Your husband called you earlier as he was leaving the precinct. He informed you that Halstead, Ruzek, and Voight wanted to watch the game tonight. Kevin called to see if it’d be okay for them to watch it at the house. Once he had confirmation that it was cool with you, he mentioned they’d be stopping for food. He offered to pick you up something as well, but you declined. You weren’t feeling well, so you didn’t have a taste for anything. Kevin asked if you were sure. After confirming, the call ended with “I love you.” Going against his better judgment, he found himself in the hot seat.
“What are you talking about, baby? How did I disrespect you?” Kevin’s senses prickled, and he braced himself for a lecture.
“So, you didn’t bring me any food? Give me some of your wings, babe,” you plead.
Not thinking it through, he let his temper get the best of him. Kevin fussed, “Did you, or did you not say you weren’t hungry? No, baby, you do this every time. You should’ve told me to get you some food. Why do you do that?”
Your eyebrows raised, “Am I not allowed to change my mind?”
“Don’t answer that,” Adam fake coughed, “loaded question.”
Ignoring his best friend, you smirked as Voight’s hand met the back of Ruzek’s head, and he whispered an apology.
“I’m not even that hungry. I just want a couple of wings and some fries.”
“Which means you want all my flats and the crispy fries. That’s the best part of the meal. If you changed your mind, there was plenty of time to call me back and ask for something. Why not do that? Am I right, or am I missing something here,” he directed the last question at the guys. They had been sitting in uncomfortable silence, trying to remain neutral. Neither Ruzek nor Halstead wanted any part of the exchange.
“Kev, give that beautiful woman some food. Always keep your wife happy,” Voight replied.
“I’m not in it, Bro,” Jay replied, while Adam held his hands up, wanting no part of the conversation.
“You should listen to Voight. Besides, I did text you.”
“No, you didn't. I had my phone on me the entire time, love.”
“Oh, so now I’m a liar? Okay, bet,” you responded, tone clipped. You sat beside Kevin with your arms crossed, giving him the silent treatment.
It had only been a few minutes when it started driving him crazy. “Here, ma. Just take some. I guess I can order some more food.”
“I’m good. Liars don’t get rewarded. Right?”
“Man, whatever,” he responded, kissing his teeth as he shook his head. “I’ll gladly enjoy my food.”
His phone signaled a text from Halstead. The men made eye contact as Jay’s facial expression signaled for Kevin to read it.
“Bro, are you crazy? Don’t argue with a pregnant woman. She’s growing your child. The least you could do is just go with it, even if she’s acting a little dramatic. It’s not her, it’s the hormones, brother 😏.”
Kevin sighed, knowing Jay was right. Not even bothering to respond, he backed out of the message. His movements halted as he noticed an unread message. Turns out you had texted him an order.
Feeling like a jerk, he locked his phone, sliding it back into his pocket. Not saying a word, he grabbed his to-go box, gently placing it in yours. His lips left a juicy kiss on your cheek, trailing up to the left temple before he spoke, “You're right, baby. I should’ve ordered extra food, just in case. Eat this, and I’ll just order some more.”
“Mm, am I right? Or did you finally see my text message? Jackass.”
He couldn’t even be mad because you were right. The doorbell sounded, leaving a confused look on your husband's face. Dumping the box back onto his lap, you turned to Voight.
“Could you help me up? Please,” you asked, voice soft and angelic.
Kevin quickly placed his food on the coffee table. “Stop playing, mama. I can get the door.” You rolled your eyes, “I’ll get it,” you snapped. Kevin stood there tilting his head to the side, burning with attitude. Voight inserted himself, “You two play nice and put this to rest. I’ll get the door.”
“Nonsense, you’re our guest,” you responded, but Voight was already up, halfway to the door.
Hank was only gone a few minutes. He returned to the family room, smiling and chuckling to himself. “Mrs. Atwater. I never want to be on your bad side. Kevin–Bro. I don't know how you'll pull yourself out of this one.”
Kevin looked at Voight quizzically. He watched as his boss laid a fatherly kiss on his wife's temple. It fully registered for him as he witnessed the man hand her an Uber Eats bag. The same logo they had all gotten their dinner from was written in big, bold letters on the receipt attached. The two of you glared at one another as you dug in and devoured a handful of fries.
The room erupted in laughter as Kevin rolled his eyes. Unlike the other men in the room, he found nothing funny.
“When did you order food?”
“The minute you called me a liar.”
Kevin pinched the bridge of his nose.
I love the hell out of this woman, but she gon’ drive me crazy.
“You cannot be serious. Let's not pretend you didn't know I’d give in and share my food. Why must you be so damn petty, woman?”
“Just hush. It’s over. Sit down, eat your food, and enjoy the game. I know I will,” you responded with a devious smirk.
Kevin groaned in irritation as he reclaimed the spot next to you. You felt his pillowy, soft lips press against your cheek, moving to that spot behind your ear. He smiled at the shiver his actions pulled from you. Fighting back a grin, you playfully rolled your eyes. With a mouthful of chicken, you responded, “Still not forgiven. You'll have to do more groveling than that, boo.”
He leaned close, whispering in your ear, “That's cute. Trust me, love. I have my ways. Daddy knows how to make it up to you. Wait until I get you alone.”
“Bro! We can hear you,” Adam complained.
“I’m beginning to wonder how this isn’t your second or third baby, Kev,” Voight teased.
Hank joked as the other two sat there, blushing like crazy. Covering your face, you awkwardly laughed with embarrassment.
“I’d get up and leave you to fend for yourself, but I can’t exactly make a run for it these days,” you ribbed Kevin.
As you were about to shrink into yourself sheepishly, the doorbell went off, and you left Kevin to deal with taunts and teases from his work family. With a firm grasp of his forearm and shoulder, you lifted off the couch. Looks of admiration rained upon you as each man watched the cute waddle you made toward the entrance.
Damn near breathless from the short distance, you took a moment to catch your breath. “Baby? Are you good?” You waved him off, telling him to calm down, and pulled open the door. Burgess and Upton’s eyes shone with excitement as they started to make a fuss over your growing baby bump. You chuckled as they questioned why you’d been the one to answer. The minute the three of you entered the living room, Burgess crossed the room, bopping Adam and Kevin upside the head as Upton chastised Halstead and Voight.
“Ladies, please. Don’t be too hard on the fellas. They all offered, but I refused,” you waved your hands. “You guys know I’m stubborn.
“As hell,” Kevin interjected.
“You want static with me so bad,” you sassed.
Kevin threw his hands up in surrender and bit his lip, slightly turned on by your attitude. Behind that sexy smirk was playfulness and something else you couldn’t quite figure out. Adam cleared his throat, “Ladies, not to be disrespectful, but can you stop giving us a hard time? We promise to behave if you just let us watch the game.”
Kim rolled her eyes, mumbling, “You’re making it very hard to like you right now. The couch is calling your name.”
Before Adam could dig himself into a deeper hole, you directed the women toward the kitchen where your peace and sanctuary awaited you.
“I’ll take this,” you said, snatching your wings from Kevin’s grasp. “I’m not sharing either,” you mocked. He nodded his head, sucking his bottom lip in. “Alright, ma. Keep it up. I’m keeping a tally.” You chuckled, turning to head further into the kitchen. You had to have the last word.
“When will you stop with these hollow, empty threats, dear sweet husband?”
Kevin’s head pushed back into the couch cushion behind him as he watched you walk away. He groaned to himself, or so he thought.
“Leave that poor woman alone, bro,” Adam joked.
“I can’t help it. That woman knows how to keep me on my toes, and I live for it.”
Every man in the living room had been hyper-focused on the game except for the man of the house. The sassiness you had given him earlier had heat simmering inside him. Your attitude always sparked a desire in him. His hands vibrated with a need to grab a handful of you. Kevin wanted nothing more than to have a moment alone with you.
Pulling himself from his lustful thoughts, he cleared his throat, “I’m going to go grab another beer. Anybody want one?”
The crew nodded “yes” in unison, eyes still fixated on the television screen. Kevin leaned against the kitchen archway, listening to the animated conversation among the women. You could feel his eyes on you, and a smile pulled at the corners of your lips.
“Is there something that you need, Mr. Atwater,” you questioned with a playful edge.
Your eyes connected with his before slowly trailing down to his bottom lip, tucked between his teeth. Hidden behind the lip bite was a sinful smirk that screamed trouble. Kim and Hailey’s stares bounced between the two of you. Clearing her throat, Kim stuttered, “You know think I hear Adam calling? Hailey, you want to join me? We’ll meet you two in the living room, yeah,” she questioned, both women not giving you time to respond.
“Traitorous heifers,” you mumbled under your breath.
You stood behind the kitchen island, arms crossed, watching Kevin make slow, calculated strides toward you. He stepped behind you, gently grabbing your waist and turning you to face him. The giant man towered over you, licking his soft, plump lips. The action alone caused you to bite back a moan. He bent lower as his mouth ghosted over your own.
“You still mad at me, baby?”
“Mad? No. Irritated, yes,” you finished, neck rolling a bit.
Kevin chuckled lightly, and in a flash, he grasped your hips, lifting you and depositing you onto the counter. Standing between your parted thighs, he leaned in and trailed his lips from your chest to the side of your neck. It slipped your mind that the house wasn’t empty, and a moan escaped your lips.
“Shhh, mamas. Don’t forget we have company.”
“Then let me down,” you gasped as his lips gently suckled your flesh.
“Not a chance in hell. Got you right where I want you now.”
“K-Kevin, seriously. You're getting me all wound up. The baby finally settled and stopped kicking me every five minutes. Don't get her started up again. Down. I want too get down,” you whined like a toddler.
“Tell me you're no longer irritated. I don't want to beef with you anymore, love. If you promise we’re good, I'll let you down,” he smirked.
“You're so irritating,” you responded playfully, rolling your eyes. “Fine, we're good!”
His hand cupped your chin as he pecked your lips continuously. It sent you into a fit of giggles. Your hand daringly wrapped around his throat to the best of its ability. Kevin groaned, pulling his plump lip between his teeth.
“I know that look. What you tryna do with a house full of guests, Mr. Atwater?”
Before your husband could reply, Voight’s voice boomed from the living room, “You two aren't as discreet as you believe yourselves to be. Atwater, halftime is over. Leave that sweet woman alone.”
“Yes sir!”
His lips landed a kiss on your forehead as he promised, “I'm taking your fine ass on a date tomorrow night.”
Kevin swept you off the counter, helping you find your footing as your swollen feet met the hardwood floors. He leaned in giving you one last sensual kiss, promising to ravish you once the two of you were alone.
Hope you all enjoyed it! Feel free to love, reblog, and leave a comment, lovelies🩵.

How Many Detectives Are Needed To Sleep A Baby? || Jay Halstead x reader!
Cute and fluffy Jay, wife and baby + babysitter detectives
*re-posting this because I'm stupid and accidentaly delated my blog 🫠
Summary: Intelligence unit takes care of Jay's newborn baby while he and his wife are in court. Turns out it is the most difficult case they have worked on.
-"You can't go in there". Platt muttered in a scolding tone to Adam, who wanted to go into the coffee room.
-"Why not?" He asked strangely.
-"Shhhhhh". Kim gave him a punch on his arm. -"Keep it quiet, you're gonna wake her up".
-"Ok, alright". Ruzek kept his voice low. -"What the hell is going on, girls?"
-"Halstead's baby is sleeping in there. Don't you dare to interrupt her sweet dreams, bro". Kevin said from his desk.
-"Look at her. You can see her smile even from here". Hailey said, peeking through the window.
Trudy and Kim followed her.
-"She's so lucky she didn't get her father's mad face". The Sergeant enquired.
-"What do you think she's dreaming about? She looks so peaceful".
-"What's going on? Where's Jay? Where's her mom? What is she doing here all alone?" Adam was losing it, increasing his voice volume once more.
-"She's not alone. We're taking care of her!". Hailey frowned.
-"Adam, please". Voigh silently got out of his office and rushed towards him whispering. -"Would you keep it down? I can hear your voice even with my door closed. Let the baby rest, she's only weeks old and already has seen too much".
The detective opened his arms in a defeated gesture. He had just arrived and didn't understand anything.
-"Y/N is testifying right now, we couldn't avoid it. She and her colleagues published the investigation under their names, so...I couldn't stop it. Jay is by her side. The baby is here for protection".
-"She really is a hell of a journalist". Upton mentioned with admiration.
-"And a very brave woman. We owe her a lot in this case". Hank stated.
-"You know? You would have known about this if you had arrived in time to work". Burgess teases Adam.
-"Is there any news about the trial?" Platt wanted to know, worried about you.
-"Not yet, but Jay said he'll be in touch". The boss stated. -"You know these trials take time".
They weren't conscious about it, but the whole Intelligence squad looked hilarious talking with whispers and walking in tiptoes as they went back to their workplaces.
Time passed and the girl was still sleeping safe and sound, until Adam decided to stand up to stretch a bit and stumbled with some cables on the floor. Naturally, the clatter woke up the little baby.
-"It had to be you, right?" Kim mocked her husband as she helped him stand up.
Hailey and Kevin ran to the coffee room as if they were running a race. It was him who got there first and held the baby girl.
-"There, there. Uncle Kev is right here". He tried to reassure her. -"I had siblings and took care of them when they were babies. I can manage another one".
But after a few minutes, she was still uncontrollable.
-"Ok, it's my turn". Burgess got into the game and took the baby off his partner's arms. -"I'm the only mom here, the only one who has a real daughter. I know how to do it".
-"What are you talking about?" Trudy Platt laughed. -"Makayla was already a grown up when you adopted her!" And she grabbed the baby to accommodate her in her chest. But the crying did not stop.
-"Oh, no. What are they doing to you, sweetie?" Upton grabbed her and laid her in her arms. -"I am her godmother, she knows me better".
The baby Halstead slowed down her crying, but she was still restless.
-"Well, how many detectives do you need to sleep a baby, hum? You don't know anything". Hank Voight gasped. -"Give her to me, I'll show you all". But as soon as she was in the arms of the boss, her crying increased. -"Oh. I've lost touch!"
Jay and Y/N were already at the bullpen, waiting in the stairs. They got in time to witness the fluffy scene.
-"Hey, guys? She's not a rag doll, you know?" Jay said laughing at the scene and his friends turned around with surprise. -"She just needs her daddy's arms''. He took his daughter to stroke her and almost immediately she calmed down.
-"That's not fair". Platt crossed her arms.
-"We brought you coffee". You smiled, leaving the box you were carrying on one of the desks. -"There's not enough caffeine when you take care of a newborn. There's one for each of you, just as each of you like it. Look for your name in the tags".
-"Geez, thanks!" Adam said gladly and balanced the table. -"I was denied entrance to the coffee room the whole morning".
-"I'm sorry". You turned red.
-"Don't listen to him". A chorus of detectives said.
-"She's really calm, it was no problem". Kevin asserted and everyone else agreed.
You approached your husband and as soon as you were in your daughter's sight, the baby started to smile and giggle, throwing little kicks into the air.
-"What? Why are you laughing so much, baby?" You raised your hands and freed Jay's arms. -"Come with mommy, sweetie".
Everyone stared at the scene with tenderness, especially Kim, whose eyes started watering.
-"You wanna hold her?"
She just nodded and took the opportunity.
-"How was the trial? Are you alright?" Platt inquiered.
-"Yeah, I mean it was really scary, but I think it went fine". Y/N hands started to shake a little bit, but she was fast enough to hide them in her pockets. Nobody noticed, except for Jay.
-"She did a great job". He hugged you by the waist, trying to secretly ease you.
-"I have no doubt about it, she already showed us how much of a badass she is". Hank smirked.
-"I will just be more comfortable if you stay in here at least until the Jury deliberates, or as soon as I can go home with you. It's just a precaution, I'm not being paranoid or something".
-"Yes, I agree". Voight followed the idea.
-"Sure. Whatever you think is better".
The baby yawned and stretched herself so adorably, that she caught everyone's attention again.
-"I should put her down to sleep".
-"Alright. Take my seat, Y/N. We don't know how much we're staying here". Jay pointed out.
-"C'me on, Kim. Give the baby back to her mommy".
-"If you need help with the baby or you get bored of these people around, I'll be downstairs". The desk Sergeant winked at you and you smiled back at her back.
-"She won't be bored. She has me here". Hailey pulled a face.
-"I'll take provisions just in case the little one takes the coffee room again". Ruzek rushed to the kitchen.
Everyone else rolled their eyes in a funny way.

Maybe We Could Do It Again
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Reader
Word count: 4,632
Warnings: bickering and fluff.
Summary: Jay meets the Reader as they’re both babysitting Makayla for Adam and Kim and they end up tangled up on the ground and kissing.
Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the One Chicago shows, or its characters, also not associated with it in any way, or know anyone involved with it.
A/N: Okay, so this is one of the longest fics I’ve written, which might be a little too long but I hope you guys like it and feel free to send feedback! By the way, this is the first time I insert Burzek in one of my fics but I think I got their energy right ;)
(y/n) = (your name) (y/l/n) = (your last name) (y/n/n) = (your nickname)
| masterlist |
“Oh my God, Adam! I can’t believe that even when you’re not supposed to do something you get it wrong!” Kim yelled at her boyfriend.
“What the hell-” He even tried to respond but got immediately interrupted for his bad language.
“Adam!” She hissed again, not believing how he could still curse so much now that the two of them had a child in the house.
“Sorry, sorry!” He said, nervously raising his hands, as Kim already peeked through the kitchen doors to see Jay and Makayla pretend like they hadn’t been listening to every word of their conversation in the living room. “It’s just… I remember you specifically telling me to find someone to babysit the kid, so I did it! How is it possible that I’m the one who-”
“Yes! I did ask you two to do that! On Monday! And do you remember what you told me?” He didn’t dare to say anything. “Oh, no? Because I do! I remember you saying, and I quote:” she said, even making finger quotes to emphasize the whole thing, “‘Where the hell am I supposed to find a babysitter for Makayla? None of my friends have any experience with kids!’” Kim shoved it in his face, making a very good point for herself. But, as usual, Adam decided to go against any sign of good judgment and continue to defend himself. He knew he could never let Kim in on it, but Jay himself was one of those who had already heard the officer saying how much he loved bickering with his girlfriend and getting her all fired up against him.
“No, uh! That won’t cut it! You told me, and I quote: ‘Then hire someone! I don’t know! But you’re the one who came up with the date night idea, so don’t come and throw something that should be your responsibility on my shoulders!’, so I knew that I needed to find someone! Kev and Vanessa are visiting his siblings this weekend, so I thought: why not Jay? He’s good with kids, and he offered to help us with Makayla!” Adam concluded, absolutely proud of himself while Kim just rolled her eyes.
“Oh. My. God!!! You do know he didn’t mean that literally, don’t you?” She was already fuming by that point.
“Err-” He had to admit that he’d never stopped to think about that possibility…
“No one means that literally!!” She shouted, this time, making even the neighbors hear their arguing. “No one means that literally, and, now, you’re just making us both look like the cops who can’t take care of their own kid in front of the entire unit.” She stated, in a lower, tone while pinching the bridge of her nose.
“But this is not the entire unit! This is Jay! Our friend Jay, who had offered!” Adam stood by that argument and Kim had already opened her mouth to shoot a remark back when Jay came into the kitchen.
“Makayla’s distracted with the tv.” He started with that so that they wouldn’t be worried. “Uh... Guys, Kim, you don’t have to worry about me telling anyone about this, okay? I won’t. Besides, I did mean what I said before. I’m here to help. Whatever you guys need. Plus, for someone who had plans of watching a game rerun alone at home on a Friday night, babysitting that cute little girl is almost like hitting a jackpot!” Jay assured, giving them a small smile and shiny eyes headed towards Makayla’s direction. Babysitting a kid, when he was probably never gonna have one of his own, was one of the things that he, personally, missed the most about when Will and Natalie were together. Back when Lindsay lived in Chicago, he used to be sure that, someday, he was gonna find someone. Settle down. Build a family. But, now… After everything that had happened, he couldn’t help but feel like his time to do all that had run out. So, instead of mooning over it, he could gladly babysit Makayla.
“Well, um, thank you, Jay,” Kim started, nervously tucking a string of hair behind her ear, “that’s really nice to hear. And we very much appreciate it. But-” She didn’t get a chance to finish as the doorbell rang and Adam rushed towards the apartment’s entrance to prevent his very excited little girl from opening the door by herself. When he got there, followed by the other two adults, Makayla was already standing on her tiptoes, hand-in-handle.
“Hey! Watcha doing, you little adventurous?!” Adam asked while picking her up from the floor and tickling her sides, which made her become a giggling mess. “You can’t just open the door like that, darlin’! You gotta check on the peephole first,” he said, as he lifted her up enough so that she could look through the hole, “like this. See someone?”
“Yes! It’s (y/n/n)!” She squealed out. “Can we open the door now? Please, Adam?” Makayla asked, shooting him pleading eyes, while her body buzzed with happiness.
“Ah, (y/n/n), right,” Adam said simply, opening the door and fearing that Kim would want to restart the whole discussion with him.
“Hey, princess!” And that simple greeting was all it took for Makayla to throw herself from Adam’s arms straight to yours. “Wow,” you laughed at her sudden movement, which had caused you to lose your balance a little, “you excited to see me?”
“Yes!! Did you bring the bakings???” She asked you eagerly, bakings being what she called your cooking utensils.
“No, not today!” Your answer made her face, almost immediately, turn into a sad frown. “But I brought this!” You told her while lifting up a box that read ‘karaoke set’, above a few drawings of a microphone and musical notes. Seeing that, Makayla’s saddened expression shifted in two seconds, eyes lighting up.
“Look, Kim!” The little girl shrieked, more than ready to have what she already knew was about to be the time of her life.
“Yeah, I see that! Seems like you girls are gonna have a blast…” Your friend weirdly trailed off, as her mind tried to find a quick solution to the mess her boyfriend had made.
“Uh…” Was all that a very handsome man you hadn’t met yet managed to let out.
“Jay, um, this is my best friend (y/n). (y/n/n), this is our friend from work Jay. I’m sorry about the mess, guys, it’s Adam’s fault.” Kim spoke again, bluntly accusing her boyfriend.
“My fault??? Are you kidding??? You told me to find someone to watch Makayla 'cause you didn’t want us to keep bothering (y/n)!”
“Guys! It’s no bother at all, really. Hanging out with this little princess is in my best interest, believe me!” You said, quickly defending your case.
“Well, thanks for saying that, (y/n/n). What happened here is that Adam told me he wouldn’t be able to get anyone,” Kim started while shooting daggers into her boyfriend with her bare eyes. “So, since I wasn’t about to just wait for a miracle, I called and asked you to do it. But someone didn’t think about telling me that he had already gotten Jay to come. And now you’re both here, ugh!” She finished, rather dramatically, while pointing a finger at Adam.
That was, seriously, the best couple you knew when it came to bickering.
“Okay, so, um, it’s not gonna be any trouble. I can leave since your colleague got here first and you don’t need to be stressed on your date night, friend.” You tried to bring things to a peaceful ending before Kim turned it into a murder scene.
“Oh, I do need to be stressed! I need to-” She started to debate but got cut off by Makayla’s cute pleading voice:
“But you can’t leave, (y/n/n)! We’re gonna play karaoke!” The little girl clearly had already gotten worked up by your idea for the night.
“Makayla, baby, please don’t be difficult. You hang out with (y/n/n) all the time, and uncle Jay is already here…” You watched as Adam tried to reason with his daughter while she held you really tight.
“No, uh…” Their friend started to say. Was it too weird for you to be thinking about how incredibly cute he looked when scratching the back of his neck like that? “Relax, man, I can go. I bet that you’re gonna have a lot more fun with her than with me, anyways, Mak.” He completed, talking to your little friend with a sweet smile, to which she reacted with a confused frown.
“But- but why does Jay have to leave? Can’t he play karaoke with us, (y/n/n)?” Makayla asked you poutingly.
“Now that’s something I’d like to see!” Adam started to mock but stopped when Kim punched him in the arm. “Ouch! That hurt, you know?”
“I know! That was exactly the result I was hoping for!” She squealed out sarcastically, “Makayla, honey, you can’t just ask both (y/n/n) and Jay to play karaoke, of all things, with you.” It was lovely to watch Kim interacting so patiently with her kid but the young girl still didn’t seem to understand.
“But why???”
“Well, they don’t know each other, Makayla.” Kim tried again but Mak still wasn’t ready to give it up.
“But they know me!”
“Good luck explaining now, ma.” As soon as the words came out of his mouth, all of you 𑁋 Adam himself included 𑁋 knew what was coming, fortunately, Kim just punched him in the arm again.
“You know, guys, you don’t need to fight over something like this, okay? Uh… Since he’s your coworker, I’m gonna assume that he’s one of the good guys, therefore I wouldn’t really have a problem with hanging out with him…” You said because you were never one to say no to little kids. “I mean if that’s okay with you, too, officer…”
“It’s detective, actually. But you can call me Jay, uh, (y/n), right?”
“Yeah, that’s right.”
“Well, I don’t have any problems with hanging out with you either,” Jay said and, Jesus, was that really his smile? “I mean, Mak should get all the babysitters she wants!” He told her with a wink. It was official. You were so done for the night.
“Ha!” Kim nervously let out a laugh, “let’s go easy there, cowboy! You can’t just come into my house offering the kid everything she wants.”
“Okay, okay,” the detective started to say with a gesture of surrender while the couple started to get out of the house to give you the space to properly go in. “Sorry ‘bout that, ma!” You could have sworn that you saw him tremble 𑁋 just a little 𑁋 under the deadly gaze your friend sent his way. Adam, who seemed to be off the hook for the first time that night, took the moment to laugh and hope that his girl would forget she had been so mad at him.
“C’mon, darling. Let’s get going before we decide it isn’t very safe to leave Mak with those two.”
"Yeah… I'm already deciding that but maybe they'll prove us wrong." Kim said, voice absolutely faithless. "You behave, Makayla!"
"It's more than obvious that she's going to be the best tonight. Get outta here already!" You heard Jay yelling a little in response to her, as you and Makayla started to get the karaoke set up.
But you, being the lucky person you were, obviously couldn't find your way around your friend's old stuff.
"Uh, you need any help there?"
“No! No, not all! Um, I got this!” You quickly responded because you could be pretty skeptical when it came to admitting your weaknesses and, from your point of view, not getting a simple karaoke set to work was a huge one.
“Alright, then…”
“Are you sure you don’t want Jay to help, (y/n/n)?” Mak asked, sounding way more reasonable than you, the actual adult there.
“Um, err, I guess maybe I could use some help… It’s just that this TV setup is quite different from mine…” You said, still unwilling to let how confused you were really show.
“Yeah, I can help!” you heard Jay as he left his spot in the corner of the room. “I was just ordering us pizza but I can totally help out 'cause Adam and I actually shopped for these TVs together, so I have the same one!” He said, this time, already gently getting the device from your hands before you could even react, which was probably him sensing that you wouldn’t give it up so easily, like he could see right through you.
“Okay, well, since you already ordered the pizza, I’ll go make us some juice.” As you said that you got both of your companions making weird faces at you, so you amended: “Or not, because you already ordered soda too… Just keep in mind that if Kim gets mad because of all the junk food that kid is eating, I’m telling on you, detective!” You said, making a point to stare right into his eyes 𑁋 God, they were so beautiful, was there nothing but beauty in this man’s body?
“Okay, so I think we’re all good here with the karaoke! Who wants to go first?” Hearing that you came of your very dangerous thoughts and Makayla jumped up and down, screaming:
“Me! Me! Me!”
“Alright, little lady, then come pick a song!” Jay told her and stood by to help her with her choice.
About three hours later all three of you had already sung your hearts out 𑁋 Jay having had gone for ABBA, which surprised you and Mak, to say the least 𑁋 eaten lots of pizza, drunk lots of soda and had begun watching a movie, cause you told Jay that that always did the trick when it came to Mak falling asleep. But, God, it was hard to pay attention to the movie you were supposed to be watching when sitting next to a guy like that. And he wasn’t just really handsome. He was sweet and kind and funny. Also, he was so good with Makayla. It was like everything you’d always imagined the perfect man being like was right there, reunited in the detective’s goof self. But you couldn't be thinking those thoughts about him. Not when he was so close. And definitely not when your best friend's daughter was lying on both of your laps.
So, in order to calm your thoughts for a minute, you gently put Makayla’s head on a cushion as you got up 𑁋 because she was already asleep 𑁋, and said I’m gonna get started on cleaning over there.” It was indeed necessary since Mak had dropped all of the content of a big ice cream container near the dining table, the ice cream being very sticky and sort of liquid 𑁋 which was obviously beyond your understanding but who were you to judge Kim and her preferences?
"Oh God, lemme help you!" You heard Jay saying, as he quickly made his way from the corridor over to where you were cleaning the floor, by the dining table.
"Ah, there's no need for it. I'm used to spending time with Mak, and, then, cleaning up before Kim sees it." You told him with a sly smile.
"Ha! Well, I don't doubt it! You're really good with her."
"And she's really good at making giant messes."
"Right." He said, chuckling lightly. "But, this time, I bet you felt like there were two kids, huh?"
"Your words, not mine, detective."
"Anyways, I'll help. Don't tell Kim and Adam, cause they might spread it across the district, but I'm actually pretty good at cleaning. Especially, when compared to someone who's doing such a lousy job." At that, you instantly snapped your head in his direction.
"What did you just say?" You asked, pretending to be mad while standing up and raising your sponge, as if it was a weapon you were threatening him with.
"Uh… Uh, d- did you know that pulling a weapon on a cop is a crime?" He asked, trying to play along, but stuttering a little.
"And what are you gonna do?" Now that Makayla was asleep… "Huh? Arrest me?" Jesus Christ, you definitely weren't thinking straight, you thought as you watched Jay drop his mop, also spilling all the soapy water on the floor. He even motioned to take care of it but stopped when he realized that you were, now, standing closer. Closer than it was safe for him to be near a woman like you. So he decided to take a step backward, not remembering the floor situation and slipping. As a reflex, you grabbed his shirt when you were obviously not gonna be able to prevent him from falling.
So, you ended up falling with him. On top of him. Oh God, was that living room always so hot? Your thoughts were cut off by Jay's laugh, it was an open-mouthed laugh, just like when you two were interacting with Makayla. He didn't seem to be the kind of guy who got to laugh too much, especially given his job. But it definitely suited his features. His smile, that bright, was so beautiful.
"So you're seriously not even gonna try and get up? Just gonna stay there staring?" Hearing that, you blushed instantly, because you hadn't even realized you were staring.
"Ah, uh… Right." Now, that was your turn to stutter, and Jay was loving every second of it. He thought you looked absolutely adorable like that. Even more so than you had looked all night.
But you weren't feeling adorable at all. You were embarrassed. By the situation at hand, sure, but, also, by your entire behavior that had, pretty much, gotten the two of you in that position. What was going through your head? The answer was simple: nothing. Or, better yet, Jay's gorgeous face, body, and behavior. Just, Jay being gorgeous all night. Now, what really made you wanna dig a hole and jump right into it was when you tried to get up but the floor was so slippery that you just fell back on him.
Needless to say, he was having a playfield. Laughing like there was no tomorrow. In fact, he had relaxed completely under you, laying his head on the soaked floor.
"You know what? This is pretty comfortable. I think I'll stay right here." It was official: you had no self-shame.
"Are you serious?" He asked, trying hard to hold back from laughing.
"Look, I don't know what else to do, okay? And my brain is clearly affected by your little charm, because I just keep mortifying myself over and over-"
"So you think I'm charming, huh?" Damn it. A thousand times damn it.
"Uh… That's not exactly what I-" You couldn't finish your sentence, as Jay started pulling you even closer to him. Kissing you. Oh boy, how he kissed you…
"Oh. My. God." Both you and Jay jumped away from each other, as much as you could, the second you heard Kim say that, her being followed suit by Adam:
"What the hell is that?!?" He half-asked, half-barked at the both of you, trying hard to not burst into laughter.
"Uh, it's, um, it's not what you're thinking, guys-"
"It's not what I'm thinking?!?" Yeah… It was safe to say that Kim was pissed. "Are you sure it isn't? Because the image actually seemed pretty self-explanatory to me!" As the both of you just kept working out a way to get up from the floor, she continued: "I come back home thinking that everything was gonna be perfect because my daughter had two adults babysitting her! People that I thought were quite responsible but, then, I come home to find those very adults making out on the floor in my living room! My very dirty living room! And, by the way, where the hell is Makayla?"
"She, um, she's in her bedroom. Asleep." Jay finally spoke. "And, about the mess… We were just, uh…"
"Yeah, man, we saw what you were just doing," Adam said, looking like he was having the time of his life.
"No! That's not what he was gonna say-"
"Ah, so the two of you got along so well that now you even know what he was going to say, (y/n)?" Kim said, while glaring at you.
"All I meant was that, well, the place got a little dirty…" Jay started to explain but not fast enough.
"A little???" Kim was really, really mad, you realized.
"But dinner was great!" At that, both you and Kim just stared at him incredulously while Adam started laughing on his way to the kitchen.
"That's what you were going to say???" You ask him, not believing you'd just tried to defend him for some joke. "Kim, I'm sorry things ended up this unfruitful…" You began to tell your best friend, to try and patch things up, when Adam chipped in from the other room.
"You know, darling, Jay wasn't wrong! This pizza is great!" He barked, mouth full. And that's what got Kim to go over the edge.
"Don't you realize what just happened here, Adam??? And, you two! I still haven't heard an explanation on what the hell I just saw!"
"I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry! We were cleaning up and then it just-"
"It just what, (y/n)??? It just happened? That what you were gonna say?"
"As a matter of fact, yes, it is! It just happened because you and your boyfriend made me babysit with this ridiculously hot guy and I'm human! Now, before you have another crisis, Makayla didn't see anything and I'm leaving because I just humiliated myself more than enough for a lifetime!" With that said, and your flight or flee instinct activated — cause you were never much of a fighter —, you did the smartest thing possible and stormed out of there, hoping to be able to get into some sort of protection program for embarrassment victims.
Meanwhile, Adam and Kim simply had to laugh, even more so when they noticed Jay's shocked twinkling expression.
"Jay! What is wrong with you?" Kim asked, taking him out of his daze.
"What?"
"Go after her! If I hadn't been so upset about the circumstances, I would've been the first one to say that what happened over there?" She asked, pointing to the floor. "What happened there was hot." The officer finished her trail of thought bluntly, as if it was the most obvious thing.
"But… What about your living room?" Jay asked, still unsure of what to do.
"Are you kidding me? Look, Halstead, if you promise not to break her heart… I won't hold it against you." Kim stated, making her stance on the whole matter very clear. She thought it was a good way to start apologizing to you after freaking out like that.
"Uh, uh, alright!" The detective rambled, looking like he had no idea of what to do next.
“Go!” With that last push, he left his friends’ house to go try and get the girl.
“You know, this is quite a mess but they do have the potential to be a great couple!” Adam happily pointed out, as he kept eating all he could find.
“Ha! If she’s as lucky as I am…” Kim ironically muttered, as she watched her boyfriend impolitely shoving food in his mouth.
“Then she’s a very lucky lady!” He confidently stated with a grin while all Kim could do was laugh at his messy childish ways.
Outside burzek's apartment — burzek being the ship name you used to tease Kim and Adam with —, you had been slowly walking towards the subway. You wanted to move faster but your mind was too full at the moment. And, sometimes, when you needed to get your head back on straight, you couldn't really do anything else, having a hard time concentrating on your flow of thoughts.
It was right when you were beginning to think you had stopped the spirals in your mind that you heard him: "(y/n)!" You recognized the detective's voice on the spot. How could you not, after how he had managed to disrupt your thoughts and actions all evening? But you weren't about to turn back around and have your very own movie ending with him. You just knew it wasn't gonna play out like that and decided to keep walking in order to preserve the little dignity you still had. "Oh, c'mon! Just give me a minute! Please!" That pleading made you turn around, to let him down more politely, which ended up with the two of you almost hitting each other. Once again, that same night, he was too close to you. The proximity with his body sending all sorts of heatwaves through yours. He seemed to be feeling it too, given the way he started to look at you, the damn smirk back on his lips.
"Nu-uh. You don't get to look at me like that. Not after what it did to me the first time."
"Huh. Care to elaborate on that? How exactly am I looking at you?" He asked, moving even closer to you altogether. "And, more importantly, what exactly did it do to you?"
"You don't need me to answer any of that." You pointed out, crossing your arms over your chest — clearly going into defensive mode.
"Maybe not," he started, tilting his head slightly — the damn smirks never leaving his face. "But. I'd like to hear it nevertheless."
"Well, you're not going to."
"Ah, okay." Wait, was he really giving up that easily? "Then maybe I can just try and see what it does to you one more time? For the sake of curiosity." All you could think to say was an enthusiastic 'Yes, please!' but, when he started leaning in to kiss you, you seemed to come back to your senses, pushing him away and taking some steps back of your own.
"Oh my God! Don't you get it? We can't be doing this right now. Not after the way I left things with Kim because of our previous, um, actions!" At that, Jay just gave you a confused look. "I stormed out of there but just because I was feeling too ashamed about it all and I honestly don’t think that I want any more embarrassment for a lifetime.
“Okay, okay. I get that but maybe it would feel less embarrassing for you if you knew that I was feeling all of that too: all of that buzzing energy and the goddamn butterflies and everything. You were doing exactly the same I did to you to me. And, as embarrassing as it was to be caught like that by Adam and Kim, I still can’t say I regret any of it. In fact, I was thinking that maybe we could do it again? You know, minus all the mess and the kid 𑁋 I mean, I adore Mak but that would be-”
You didn’t care to listen to the rest of all he had to say. Instead, you threw yourself into his arms, even making him lose his balance for a second, and started kissing him, except that this time it was a slow, hot, and thought-through kiss. And the second you did kiss him, you heard clapping and whistling from afar, as you turned to find Kim and Adam there, once again witnessing you and Jay kiss. And that had Jay whispering to you:
“Let’s get out of here?” To which you responded simply with a:
“Yes, please!”

“Any cases?” Jay asked as he sat down at his desk.
Erin shook her head. It had been a slow day for the intelligence unit. “No its been a slow day.”
“Hmmm.” Voight hummed also listening to Erin’s answer. Even Voight was getting bored.
But when Trudy came up the stairs with concern on her face, that got everyone's attention. “Voight. Y/n’s principle is on the phone.”
“Thank you, Trudy.” Voight nodded and headed into his office and picked up the phone. “Hello.”
“Hello, Mr.Voight. I’m sorry for calling you at work.” Y/n’s principal apologized over the phone.
“It's not a problem. What's going on? Is Y/n alright?” Voight spoke with a tight voice. It was rare when the school called him so he was really worried but trying not to show it.
There was a pause on the phone before the person on the other side cleared their throat. “That's why I called there was an altercation and Y/n got very hurt so we’ve sent her to Chicago Med. We wanted to let you know and we also we’re hoping you could send down someone to talk to the kids responsible.”
“Yeah, I can do that.” Voight stated after a moment of silence. After that, the phone call ended and Voight shook his head trying to control his anger before exiting his office. “Ruzek and Linsdey head down to Y/n’s school and bring in the kids they’ll have there waiting for you back here to talk. Burgess call their parents and let them know that I’ll be pressing charges.”
“Voight, what happened?” Erin asked as her and the others started on their orders. All of them were now concerned about the teen girl they had all come to love and be very protective of.
“Some kids hurt Y/n bad enough that the school has sent her to Chicago Med.” Voight explained gruffly, trying to keep his worries and anger in check.
“What?!” Adam raised his brows in shock and he felt anger bubbling up on the inside. Much like everyone else in the room.
“Seriously? They just what? Let that happen?!” Jay was furious, he hadn’t known her the longest but even with his problems with Voight. Jay and Y/n had become close. They’d hang out, and go do things together. It bonded them. They’re friends. Y/n is like a little sister that Jay never had.
“Apparently. Look I’m going to Med to be with my daughter.” It unnerved the unit with how calm Voight seemed to be.
“I’ll come with you.” Jay said getting up to follow the older man.
“Let's go.” Voight nodded, he knew how close his daughter was to Jay. He might bring some comfort.
Everyone else headed off to do what they needed to do.
Once they arrived at Med, they went straight to the ED. Upon seeing his brother Jay called out. “Will!”
“How is she?” Voight asked as the redheaded Halstead appeared and stood in front of them.
Will let out a sigh, looking between his brother and Voight. “She doesn’t need surgery, which is the good news.”
As much of a relief that was it still left a question. “An the bad news?”
“About 70% of her body is covered in bruising, and she has a broken wrist, a few cracked ribs, and a laceration above her eye.” Will gave them a sad look. He to like a lot knew Y/n, and Will felt for the girl. She didn’t deserve this.
“Jeez Will.” Jay felt like throwing up. How could the school let it get this far? Or happen at all.
“I know.” Will nodded, he felt just like Jay.
“Where is she? Can I see her?” Voight asked keeping his feelings at bay for the time being. He was feeling to many things at once anyway.
“Yeah, right this way.” Will stated, leading them back to the trauma room Y/n Voight had been assigned to.
As they reached the room and saw y/n sitting up in the bed slightly leaning back. Probably to take pressure off her ribs.
“Hey, how about we go get copies of the injury reports and give them a minute?” Jay suggested with a tilt of his head. Wanting to give the father and daughter some space.
There were some moments of silence as Voight moved to sit down in the chair next to the hospital bed. It got to the point that Voight needed answers to keep his brain occupied. “Kid-”
“I know, dad.” Y/n cut him off nodding. Already knowing what he was going to say.
“What exactly happened?” he asked. He needed to know for many reasons but his main one and his focus now was just why and how this happened to his little girl. “Y/n.”
Y/n let out a sigh, knowing she had to tell him cause it was going to far and out of hand now. “It’s not the first time something happened.”
“You mean-”
Y/n nodded not looking at him. She couldn’t look at him. Not in the eyes. “It's normally not this bad.”
Now Voight was having an even harder time keeping it together. How could he not notice? How come she didn’t come to him? “Why didn’t you tell me? Or anyone?”
“I've tried before. To tell teachers bit either they do nothing or it just makes it worse.” She had thought about telling her dad or even Jay but if the school wouldn’t help how could they?
Voight shook his head reaching out for her hand, trying to get her to look at him. “I could’ve done something.”
“As a dad. Not as a cop. It wasn’t bad enough for cop involvement.” Y/n gave him a tight lipped sad smile.
She had a point and it bugged him cause he knew it was true. But now, this. This meant he could get involved as a cop, and a dad. “Well now it is and you can bet your ass I’m gonna do something about it.”
Y/n cracked a smile at him. “I don’t know who they should be more afraid of. You or Jay.”
“Combined force, sweetheart.”Voight gave her a half smirk half smile. Voight know she was right, he saw and could feel the anger coming off of Jay on the ride over to Med.
“Ohhh, deadly.” Y/n giggled wiggling her eyebrows and laughed. Even though they knew it was true.
Voight squeezed her hand for comfort before speaking. “You know you can talk to me right? About anything?”
He truly hoped she knew that. That she could come to him about anything and everything.
“I didn’t want to worry you.” Y/n shrugged but looked down feeling a little ashamed. That she didn’t tell him and that it happened at all.
“I’m your father. I worry even when your okay.” he told her sternly. He cared about her more than he could ever tell her. Or show her.
“I love you dad.” Y/n smiled at him grateful to have this off her chest, for him to know, and that he was by her side.
“I love you too.” Voight was gonna take care of this. An no one was gonna get in his way.

Day 2 of my Month of May Writing Challenge: I’m really not sure what this is but enjoy! It’s a Halstead! sister reader x essentially intelligence unit. Idk how to tag this one tbh but it just came to me.
Title: Village
Your POV
You were an anxious person who had a brother who worked for a specialized elite unit in the police force and you liked crime drama shows, so it was no brainer your brain thought of all the irrational scenarios for you to be kidnapped. Like walking to the Target and getting grabbed by someone hidden in the bushes. You drop your phone and the only way anyone knows you're missing is because you do a no call no show at work. Or maybe you're at your door unlocking the gate but it’s taking you a hot second because you're carrying a tray of coffee for you and your siblings. A guy who was watching you for days sees their opportunity and grabs you, inevitably getting you to drop your drinks. Your brothers find out you're missing when they look outside and see your keys, backpack, and tray of drinks spilled out on the ground.
Realistically you know the likelihood of any of these things happening is low, but you're still on guard.
That’s why when you find yourself being chased by a man dressed as a construction worker, you're scared but not fully shocked.
Reaching your brother’s house, you bang on the door with the palm of your hand hoping he or his wife is home and will open the door. Looking back, you can see the man in the distance still running. Knocking harder, you pray someone will open the door. You can feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you realize the man in question is getting closer and before you have time to knock a third time, you feel yourself being lifted. You begin to wriggle about in his arms and begin to open your mouth to scream, but before you have the chance he clamps a hand over your mouth.
“Be a good little girl and swallow the pill” he chastises while yanking your head back to take in the pill he had in the palm of his hand.
You really don’t want to swallow it, but your reflexes kick in and before you know it whatever he had given you, you had swallowed.
“Good girl” he praises as he drags you away from the door and towards an awaiting van.
When you wake up, you find yourself tied to a pole in the center of a room. Looking around, you figure you're in a basement somewhere. You pray Jay realizes you’re missing and has started looking for you.
Jay POV
It was a slow paperwork day at the office. Nobody seemed too interested in the paperwork we were doing. 5pm couldn’t come fast enough. Y/N was supposed to be getting her homework done on time so that we could enjoy a nice relaxing movie to end the work/school week.
I knew Y/N was an anxious kid and had a wild imagination. I also knew my job was inherently dangerous so to make sure I could keep an eye on not only Y/N but also the house we lived at, I installed a ring camera and had the feed hooked up to my phone. So anytime someone came to the house I would be alerted. Y/N did not know this cause she didn’t need her imagination running more wild with the possibilities of what could happen.
While typing away on my computer, my phone lights up with a notification that someone is at the door. I decide it’s best to finish my thoughts in the report before looking.
When I do eventually look I catch the tail end of someone dragging my sister away and she looks passed out.
“Voight!” I call out while rewinding the ring camera to see a frantic Y/N continuously check behind her back and then see the man grab her.
The team gathers around and watches.
“Adam, Kim, see if we can get facial rec off this partial facial grab” states Voight while putting a hand on my shoulder and squeezing it.
I can’t believe my sister got kidnapped and I didn’t catch it cause I was doing stupid paperwork!
Your POV
The man had just left the room and all you could do was sob! He roughed you up a bit and told you that you had to be a good little girl, let him call you Saddie and if you did what he told you then you wouldn’t be chained up anymore. You just wanted to go home.
Jay’s POV
Voight is letting me help with the case, but I have to stay on desk duty.
“We got a name! His name is Richard Klutz. His rap sheet includes aggravated assault, mandated anger management therapy, possession with intent to sell, and get this he was a good citizen up until 3 years ago.” spoke Kim while Adam put up photos and wrote on the whiteboard.
“What changed” I asked while swallowing the nausea I was feeling just thinking about my sister being in the hands of this monster.
“His 13 year old daughter died from Leukemia.” stated Kim.
The team got to work trying to locate a location that Richard might be at. But we came up empty, until Hailey realized that maybe a family home if his daughter was what made him go off the deep end.
“1455 S Archer, he is still paying property taxes on the place. It didn’t come up in the initial search cause the house is under his ex's name.” I said from my desk.
“Let’s roll out!” called Voight. I watched as everyone grabbed coats and began to shuffle out. I prayed my sister wasn’t hurt too badly! I couldn’t wait to get the call to head to the hospital to see her!
Your POV
The man, who had begun referring to himself as daddy, had beat me up some more and was now in the process of cutting my hair. My hair isn’t that long to begin with, it’s just past my shoulders, but he is trying to make it like a pixie cut, but he is using kitchen sheers and it hurts and I just know it my heart it’s going to be a botched job I’m going to have to pay to get fixed.
“There, all pretty” he sing songed while petting my now pixie short hair.
I scowled and spit out, “go to hell”
Before he could punch me again for cursing I heard the door upstairs and footsteps. The team found me!
“Down here!” I screamed while smirking at the man.
A rush of footsteps came barreling down the wooden staircase and I smiled in relief when I saw Adam, Kim, Kevin, and Hailey!
Adam and Kevin tackled the man and both Hailey and Kim came to untie me. Once untied I fell into Hailey’s arms and sobbed!
“It’s okay babygirl, we got you, you’re safe now” she reassured me.
Third Person POV
At the hospital Jay met everyone. Ethan confirmed that Y/N didn’t need to stay overnight, but she did need to stay for a few hours to get rehydrated from an IV and get her wounds cleaned. Dr. Charles also came for a visit and they discussed that even though she had thought of all these various scenarios happening to her, this was definitely not her fault and she was not asking for it. He also recommended she had some one on one therapy to manage her anxiety going forward and to also have family therapy with Will and Jay to help her voice her thoughts about them having dangerous and time consuming jobs. And also so that Will and Jay can learn how to communicate with her about important things without feeling like by doing so they are going to trigger her anxiety.
Hailey and Kim decided that they would take Y/N for a girls day. They got a haircut to fix her botched pixie. Then they went for mani & pedis.
Kevin and Adam decided they were going to do their own day with her, which included teaching her self defense moves and ended with teaching her how to play video games after she kicked Adam a little too hard in the nuts.
Voight’s way to help Y/N through her trauma was to take care of Richard Klutz and make sure he left town and never came back.
Through it all, Y/N and the Halsteads realized that it truly does take a village to raise someone and damn do they have a village around them!

Trainwreck
Pairing: Hailey Upton x OFC! Elizabeth "Ellie" O'Hara
Summary: O'Hara's undercover case is finally done: the attack was tracked, the boys were identified and the school got evacuated at time. But the teacher, Mrs. Baker --- Ellie's cover --- was caught by the last shooter. And he knows what she had done.
Author's note: Last week, many teenage boys attempted to attack schools of my country. They were stopped. Yet, I had this nightmare on April 20th, and I couldn't get it out of my mind ever since. I wrote this in order to get rid of my thoughts, and to thank all the police offers and people involved who were able to stop the attacks and help amidst all the violence and sorrow.
Warnings: violence; shooting; mention of school shooting; crying; panic attack
It felt cold. Icy. Empty.
It trembled and faltered as I tried to keep standing. The only thing I felt was my spine: the cold running up and down by it. I did not feel my skin, nor the tears soaking my face. I felt the cold, of my body and of the gun, aimed to my forehead, brushing it ever so slightly.
The kid did not even know to hold it. But he screamed and screamed – I could not understand what. He had said it, repeated it a dozen times, but I didn't reply. I heard the silence amidst his shouts: I knew what sound was about to emerge, and I waited for it.
It was the only thing that kept from bending down and begging for mercy. I felt limbs trying to make me knee, but I fought back. I fought, with my eyes closed and empty body, while his screams spread all over the classroom. Chairs and tables were thrown in my direction, yet I did not see it. Were they threats? Were they aiming at me, just like his gun?
A loud sound stopped his voice from rising again: his face turned white for a moment, then he smiled.
"It has begun." He spoke proudly. The revolver touched my forehead again. "You were useless. You are useless." The gun clicked, smoothly. "Your fucking traitor bitch."
"CHICAGO P.D!" The sound came as a divine response to him. The sound I waited so long for. "DROP THE GUN!"
I could hear him gasping. Finally, I could hear him – and I could feel my body. The cold was still there, but a burst of energy moved my arms in his direction. His panic became worse than mine – his hand faltered, and he nearly shot my head; if not for the sudden move I had made, I would be dead. The board behind me was hit and broken, the kid jumped with the powerful feeling of the gun kick in his hand and dropped it. It fired again, and hit a chair in the room. The metal echoed as the chair fell into pieces.
He was not strong. He could not be – he was a weak and small teenage boy, too tiny to fight back; bold enough to use a gun instead – he was a shooter. A bullied kid. A coward, in pain. I've seen it during all the months I've spent in his class, in his school – I became his teacher, in order to save him. Or to stop him.
But, today, he was no longer a victim. No longer a sad, suffering boy. Today he was a monster, a furious man, willing to kill. He had followers spread in the school. Followers that were now arrested, or killed. He was seconds away from paying for his crimes – for his plan to revenge and to murder.
He knew that he had lost. He knew that it was over. And all his rage came to the surface at once – he roared like a beast, and jumped over me as the steps reached the hallway.
He stretched and punched me, wildly, blindly, and I held his arms. I looked at his eyes as he screamed at me: his eyes. His eyes were...different. They didn't belong to my student, to a shy kid – they were violent. Vile. Evil. My body froze as I stared into his soul – it was like looking at the devil himself.
My ears sizzled while blood started to pop up from his blows. His fingernails pierce through my skin – he wasn't trying to escape from my hands. He was trying to hurt me. I could see it in his eyes: he wanted to kill me.
I did not hear the sound of the police stepping into the room. I did not hear her warnings. I did not hear the shot.
I only felt his weight and body in my hands.
Someone pulled me away – his body fell without my support. Lifeless. I wasn't able to hold him. I wasn't able to help him. No one was. Not anymore.
The kid was dead.
"They're fine. They're fine." A voice tried to calm me down. Its hands moved me away, but my eyes stayed on the floor. On him. "The school was evacuated." Sargeant? It was him? Voight stopped the shouting? "No one got hurt." The cold came back. My spine -- the only thing I felt -- trembled and shuddered. I fell. I did not feel my knees hitting the ground. "Look at me!" His blood was spreading over the floor. I was too far away to touch it. The officers around him shook their heads in sync. An ambo was not needed. He was dead. "Look at me!"
"He's dead." I mumbled. "I did it– I did not–" I crawled towards him – the coldness moved me forward, the despair shook and drove me. "Jimmy is dead. Oh my god." My chest was crushed -- my own weight was too heavy. I fell again. "What have I done?"
"You saved a whole school." There were hands holding me. Keeping me from the bloodied floor and curious eyes of other officers. "Listen to me! You saved dozens of children. You saved them. You hurted no one." I wasn't able to look at him anymore. Someone was in front of me. "Look at me, O'Hara. Look at me." My gaze focused on the person ahead. Hailey wasn't shaking as I was. Her grip felt strange in my skin. "You did great. Everyone's safe because of you." She was smiling. Trying to. "You listened? You saved all of them."
"Not all." Her touch helped me to feel something besides the coldness. Soon I felt my body and I was able to control it again. I stood up. I walked away. I left the classroom with Hailey Upton's arms around my shoulders. She made me move. She made me, finally, step away from the kid. From the shooter.
His image was confusing in my head and heart – I was satisfied and sad at the same time.
I could not cheer as the rest of the police officers. I could not be glad because of my "good job". I could not accept Voight's compliments.
"Can I go home?" I asked as soon as he finished explaining the last details of the procedure. The numbers of dead and imprisoned. I watched all of them during the last months – I knew all of them. And I did not want to know. "Is it over?"
Part of the team widened at me, but Hank did not react. He nodded. So I left.
"Stay with her." He told Upton.
"Sarge, I don't think–" Kim said immediately.
"It's okay." Hailey cut her off. "I'm good."
"You're exhausted." Kim argued. "And so is O'Hara. It's–"
"Burgess." Hank deadpanned. "They both go, the rest of you will finish the inquest." The sargeant looked at all of them. "Now."
X
I think my mom was right. She said to me "You don't have to be a teacher. There's another way of helping people." She was a teacher herself, and I saw how hard it was. But I loved it – to teach, to guide. A teacher can change someone's life, and they have changed mine. So I wanted to do it too.
I still don't know how I ended up being a cop. She didn't approve of it either, nor did my dad.
What has changed?
What has changed since my mom's time?
She was never afraid of this. Her school was safe.
What has changed?
I didn't know what it was, but I recognized it. I felt it. It made me a cop and, yet, I didn't know how to stop it.
This time, however, somehow I did it. I stopped it.
Did I?
The kid was dead.
My student. My student was dead.
And there were so many others. There will continue to be, because of them — the ones I also taught. The bullys. No one could really blame them — they didn't shoot at anyone. But the pain in the boy's gaze started somehow. Somewhere.
So that was the way to stop it? To prevent kids from being stupid and committing mistakes?
Were they truly innocent kids?
The coldness of Chicago hit my face. I soon realized where I was: the streets were empty, but the neighborhood was familiar.
I had a house there. Not really me, but my cover did — the Mrs. Baker did. Some students also lived there. Right now, they were sitting in their living room, watching the news about the failed school shooting attempt. Watching about the casualties and how an anonymous tip saved the whole school.
Anonymous.
No one could know I did it. Besides the intelligence unit and some police officers, no one knew I was more than a teacher. Now I'm not even it. The cover was gone — the task was concluded.
My house would be empty by the weekend. My belongings — the teacher's belongings — would be given away.
I have no place to go.
The streets are still empty.
The question echoes in the air as I hear gasps and voices coming from the houses.
No one comes out. No one talks to anyone. The neighborhood remains frightened and lonely.
What has changed?
X
Hailey Upton rushed to the parking lot as soon Burgess stopped talking. In a blink of an eye, the barely moving undercover officer disappeared in the school hallways. There were cameras and journalists in the surroundings, and police men keeping them away. Some curious students and teachers were watching. Yet, O'Hara was nowhere to be found. This was usual since Hailey's and Ellie's academy days, but this time was different. This time Ellie was shaking and zoning out, totally detached from reality. Hailey had never seen her like that — therefore she didn't know what her long-date colleague was capable of.
She was supposed to be happy. Relieved, at least — but O'Hara looked more disturbed than ever.
Hailey arrived at the parking lot. Ellie's car was not there.
Ellie was not there.
"Upton!" A strong voice called from behind. "Hold on a bit."
Hailey turned back and saw Atwater approaching.
"I've got some news." He announced. "Her lead was right. There was a group." He smiled. "The police from neighboring towns already arrested the shooters."
"Any victims?"
"None. She might have saved hundreds of kids. O'Hara has to know it."
"Yes. I hope it will help her." Upton moved back. "Thank you, Atwater."
Has to know it. The phrase repeated inside Hailey's head. She has to, because she doesn't know it — the look in her eyes earlier, the way she glanced at the shooter. She was guilty.
And she would try to help until she succeeded.
Upton knew exactly where she was.
X
I didn't want to make a scene. I didn't want anyone to know. There were already a pair of detectives bringing up the news to her. Her kid was dead, and I heard her crying the moment she figured it out.
I wanted to step in. I wanted to go closer and say to her "I'm sorry." I am sorry.
No one else, no matter how tiny and close to each other the houses were, moved in the neighborhood. Part of it already knew: his face was already in the news. But no one walked outside. No one walked to her.
I did.
I used the open door and walked into the living room as I listened to the detectives speaking further into the house. Her sobs led me to a hallway. I stood there, between the two doors: in the left, the police men spoke and investigated his bedroom; in the right, her bedroom and screams, begging for her son. I stepped to the side, in her direction, and I was about to reach the hallway when my body froze again.
The coldness in the spine, the insensitive skin. Then, suddenly, the same hard grip that held me from the ground now held me again: the strong hands drove me away and out of the house, in complete silence. I could not fight it.
"Ellie." The voice spoke. "What are you doing? What are you thinking?"
"She--" I mumbled. "She needs a tissue." I stepped back to the house, but it held me again.
"No! You're done with this, you hear me?" I shook my head, trying to free myself. "You're done with it, Ellie, you can't get involved."
"Why?"
"What?"
"Why am I done?"
Hailey stared straight at me, and forced me to do the same: her gaze was confused and intense, it looked for an explanation and logic.
"They are all safe. All the schools of the region. You did it, you saved them."
"I failed him."
"You stopped a school shouting." She argued back.
"He's dead." I sobbed. The cold spread over my face, my cheeks got soak because of the salty tears. "Why couldn't I stop him? Why did he do it?
"Ellie–"
"I can't--"
"Ellie!" She shook me. I could no longer feel her grip, no matter how tight it was: now, I felt a different type of pinch. It suppressed my lungs, and the words coming out my mouth were nothing more than shaky breaths.
I couldn't breathe.
"It doesn't matter. You have to breathe." I closed my eyes and retreated, but her hands kept me from moving away. There was warmth in my face. "You're losing your mind."
"Please!," I breathed out. "Please, Hailey, just tell me why."
"You're asking the wrong question" I could hear a weak laugh. "as always."
I sniffed and tilted in response.
"The right question is: how do we stop it?" I grunted, but she went on. "And you did it. You stopped it. That boy chose this and there was nothing you could possibly do."
"He was my student." I broke down: Hailey hugged me and held me up. "He was–"
"I know, I know." She whispered. "You did your best. They're good now. Please, calm down." I was shaking under her embrace. "Please, come back."
I cried out loud as the police kept arriving at the scene: at the shooter's house. Upton stopped me from getting involved, just like she has done so many times before – she drove me away from the neighborhood. She drove me to a place I have never been before.
I just understood where I was when my blurred eyes gazed at the empty kitchen and messy living room.
"Is that–"
"It's okay." Hailey cut me off and quickly gathered the blanket over the couch. "Jay's away. Army's mission."
"I didn't–" I shook my head and stepped back. "I shouldn't stay."
"It's okay." She kindly smiled at me. "That's why I'm here, remember?"
"To stop my trainwreck of thought?"
She laughed as I remembered her stupid phrase from our academy days.
And then she repeated:
"To stop your trainwreck of thought."

myrtle and kim burgess?
Sunlight streams in through the slatted blinds, casting the room in a warm golden haze. It has the whole room glittering with its light, especially the smooth gold band sitting atop the ring finger on Kim’s outstretched hand.
“I can’t believe it.” You murmur in disbelief, lips brushing against the bare skin of her shoulder and making her smile even wider. “We’re really married.”
“Well, you’d better.” She rebukes, reaching for your hand where it lays on her hip under the covers to skim her fingertips over the matching ring on your finger. “Too late to go back now.”
“Like I’d make it that easy for you to be rid of me.” You tell her through a smile, to which she laughs brightly and laces her fingers tightly with yours.

JAY HALSTEAD MASTERLIST || TAG LIST SIGN-UP
“Get to Med… Jay’s been shot.”
As she waits in the waiting room at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, the sound of her sergeant’s words echoes in her ears. Her heart is racing, her knee is bouncing, her hands are trembling, and dried up tear streaks run down her face. She feels like she’s been sitting in the room for an eternity, waiting for any news about her husband’s condition. He was already in surgery by the time she got at the hospital, which was a little more than two hours ago.
“Y/N!” she hears her partner, Kim Burgess, call out as she approaches her. When the brunette reaches her, she embraces her tightly.
After Jay and Y/N revealed their relationship to Voight, the two women became partners. They’ve been like sisters since they went through the academy together, and they got even closer after Y/N and Hailey Upton were transferred to Intelligence after Erin Lindsey left.
“Has there been any news?”
“I haven’t heard anything; Will just went to see if he can get an update,” she says before breaking down again. “I can’t lose him, Kim,” she cries into the shoulder of her best friend. “I can’t do it without him. We just got married. I can’t be without him.”
“Jay’s strong; he’ll get through this,” Kim reassures her as she rubs her back and squeezes her even tighter; it crushes her heart to see her best friend and chosen sister like this.
“Did you get the person who shot him?” she says, pulling away from Kim and angrily wiping away the fresh set of tears that are falling. The anger in eyes and voice wasn’t intended for her partner, or Adam who had been with Jay at the time of the shooting, or the rest of their team but at the guy who fired the gun at her husband and shot him. She begged Hank to give her five minutes with the person when they apprehended him, but Hank ordered her to stay at the hospital because that’s where she needed to be the most and swore he wouldn’t go easy with the guy.
Kim replies, moving to sit in the chair next to the one she was in, “He’s in custody. Voight’s making his life a living hell, I’m sure of it.”
She sits back down next to her and asks, “How’s Ruz?”
“He’s blaming himself,” Kim replies. “He’ll be here when he’s cleaned himself up, and the others will be here after they’ve finished with the interrogation.”
She nods, letting Kim know she heard her.
Minutes pass as they sit in quiet, Kim holding her hand and reminding her that she is not alone. Will eventually returns and informs her that there haven’t been any updates just yet before he leaves once more to grab them all some coffee.
Just as Will comes back with Adam following behind him, the surgeon walks into the waiting room.
As he approaches, Y/N and Kim get to their feet. As the doctor begins to talk, Will moves to stand next to his sister-in-law. “Surgery went smoothly. We removed the bullet, stopped the bleeding, and repaired the damage the bullet caused. Jay will make a full recovery, but he will need to take it easy for some time.”
Y/N exhales with relief, “I’ll make sure he does. Can we see him?”
“Two at a time,” the doctor says with a nod.
“Adam and I will go update everyone,” Kim says to her and Will before exiting the waiting room with Adam.
The doctor leads Will and Y/N to the room where Jay has been moved. Jay opens his eyes and looks sleepily at his wife and brother as soon as they enter the room.
“Oh, baby,” Y/N breathes as she walks over to his bed and takes his hand in hers, looking at him with tenderness. “Please don’t put me through that again.”
“I can’t make any promises,” he says drowsily with a small smile. He raises her hand and kisses the back of it.
“How are you feeling?” Will asks as he stands beside Y/N.
Jay jokes with a slight smirk on his lips, “Like I was shot.
Y/N scowls at him, not in the mood for jokes right now, and says, "Don’t joke.”
“You love me, and you know it,” he gives her a small smile letting her know he’s teasing her.
“I need to get back to work, but I’ll stop by after my shift,” Will tells his brother, stopping Y/N from that is retaliating. “I’ll make sure to bring you some decent food.”
“Thank you, Will,” she says as he exits the room. Looking back at her husband, she sits on the edge of the hospital bed, clutching his hand on her lap. “I was so scared I would lose you.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” he assures her. “We still have a lot to do together.”
She leans down and gives him a soft kiss while whispering, “I love you.”
“I love you too,” he replies as he kisses her again. “Now, come lie down with me.”
“You’ve just gotten out of surgery. I don’t want to cause you more pain.”
“They’ve got me on the good stuff, honey, and after what I just went through, all I want to do is hold my wife and remind her that us Halstead’s aren’t easy to take down,” he says and pulls her close to him, moving them so she can lay down beside him.
With his arm across her shoulders and her head on his, he presses a kiss to her forehead and whispers, “I promised you forever. I’m keeping that promise.”

kidnapped | jay halstead imagine
authors note : takes place in season 3 episode 1
warnings: medical trauma, pregnancy, kidnapping
You were currently on bed rest from work as you were 6 months pregnant with your first baby. Voight had decided to put you on “time out” from work even just at the desk, answering calls. Your pregnancy was considered high risk and no one was messing around. Your job was stressful considering the different situations you all had been put in.
Jay was especially worried about you. He had asked you to marry him just before you found out you were pregnant. So your days consisted of wedding planning and texting Kim, Trudy, and even Al to try as see what was happening in the unit because Jay wouldn’t tell you anything.
The doorbell rang so you went to walk to the door. Your stomach dropped when you saw it was Voight. He had a strict no contact policy with you these last months of pregnancy but the rule was you only would call him when you went into labor and he would only call you if something bad had happened. And now he was in person.
You opened the door immediately, “What happened?”
He sighed and walked in, “Jay’s been taken. By Derek Keyes, a heroin kingpin.”
Your knees began to buckle as he spoke. Hank reached out and grabbed your elbows to stop you from hitting the ground.
“We’ll get him back, sweetheart. But you have to come into protective custody.”
All you could do was nod as he helped you to the car. You were numb, not knowing how to feel. Jay was the love of your life and soon to be father of your child.
While driving, Voight filled you in on the details on how he had been in contact with Derek Keyes and that Jay was still alive, which was the main thing. There was a negotiation being made but they didn’t want to tell you the details.
Hank escorted you all the way to the bullpen, but was going on a drive. You honestly didn’t question it. You were sitting at Jay’s desk instead of your own while Al made a phone call, “I know you’re on the outs, but I figured you’d want to know. Jay’s been kidnapped.” There was a pause, “Yeah she’s here but… yeah yeah… she’s on bed rest.”
You looked over to him and he gave you a soft smile as he hung up, “We’re gonna get him back, sweetheart.“ He put his hand on your shoulder and squeezed gently.
They had told you that the drop was set for 9am the next morning which meant more waiting.
All you could do was just sit at the desk and try to hold your tears in.
Finally, around 8am, Voight came back asking about the CI files that were for the exchange. He then asked for Burgess to do the drop as Keyes wanted a female but Adam protested.
“I’ll do it.” Lindsay’s voice echoed from the stairs. Your head turned towards her.
Voight began to argue with her but Erin shot right back, “This isn’t about me. It’s about getting Jay back to his family.”
She glanced your way and offered a small smile. She brushed her hand on your back as she walked towards Voight’s office.
After that, things were a blur. With Erin getting ready to make the drop and your overwhelming worry for Jay, you were a wreck. Erin was going to the drop while Burgess and Roman stayed with you.
When everyone finally left, you broke. You were sobbing so hard you couldn’t breathe. Kim just wrapped her arms around you and held you.
Suddenly, you felt a stabbing pain and you gasped out. “What is it? What is it?” Kim asked, looking you up and down.
You felt something dripping between your legs thinking your water had broke so you looked down and gasped when you saw it was bright red.
“Roman call an ambo.” Kim ordered as she pushed your hair back, “It’s gonna be okay. You’re gonna be okay.”
“Call Will.” You gasped out. It only took moments after that for you to start losing consciousness.
The next thing you heard was Kim trying to rouse you and the paramedics saying all different medical terms.
“Jay,” You groaned out, not remembering that he had been taken.
—
The gurney was being wheeled out and you into the trauma bay. You were completely unconscious.
“Patient is unconscious. Suspected from blood loss. Heavy bleeding still happening. BP skyrocketing.” The paramedic spouted out.
When your gurney was parked and you had been moved to the bed, Will came running in, “Status?”
“Dr. Halstead, we need you to get out of the room.” A nurse said softly.
“No! What is the status?” Will argued.
The doctor working on you began to preform an ultrasound, “Potential partial placental abruption. We either need to deliver this baby or get control of the bleeding.”
“You can’t deliver her. She’s only 6 months.” Will said, finally going to your side and giving room to the doctors.
Before the doctor could answer, Burgess came running back in, “They found him. He’s alive. He’s on his way here in an ambo.”
Will sighed with relief, “Start with a blood transfusion, betamethasone and dexamethasone.”
—
The next thing you knew, you were waking up in a hospital bed. You looked around to see Jay sitting in the chair next to you, holding your hand.
“Hey,” You whispered.
Jay sat right up and squeezed your hand. He looked awful, “Hey sweetheart. You and the baby are both fine.” He smoothed your hair back.
“You look like you should be in a bed too,” You smiled lightly.
“Technically I am. Right next to you.” He grinned.
You looked over and saw an empty bed. You shook your head at him, “Always the rebel, huh?”
He stood up and kissed your forehead, “I love you so much.”
“I love you.” You leaned against him.
“Hey, look who’s awake.” It was Will talking, he walked in smiling. “You had a partial placental abruption. Most likely due to stress. We gave you some medicine to help develop to baby’s lungs and brain develop in case we had to deliver him early.”
“It’s a boy?” You smiled, tears slipping down your cheeks. The two of you had been waiting to find out the sex of the baby.
“It’s a boy.” Will smiled. “Sorry for ruining the surprise.”
Jay smiled and hugged Will, “Doesn’t matter. You kept her safe and my little boy inside so he can keep growing.”
“Also, I hate to say it, but, you’re going to have to spend the rest of your pregnancy in the hospital. It’s too much of a risk to have you go home.” Will said.
You nodded and put your hand on your stomach, “Whatever it takes to keep me and my boys safe.” You looked at Jay and smiled.

One of Those Days || Jay Halstead x Halstead Sister
We deserved more interactions between Kim and Jay, that's all I'm saying.
I was thinking about this day where I was feeling super shitty at school, my self harm habits were horrible back then and I always wanted to cry. Since my mom was working, I texted my aunt and she took me to her house. She knew I was pretending to have a headache, but anyway followed my game. My little cousin lend me her bed to lay down and she decided it was a good idea to read The Little Prince for me to fall asleep 💕
“Do you want me to call your dad?” The receptionist at school asked the girl infront of her. Her head was slightly lowered and her hair covered a good part of her face.
“Can you call my brother instead?” Becca asked in a low crackly voice.
The receptionist sighed, “Sure. But you know I can’t let you go without your dad’s permission”
The girl nodded and sat in the hard plastic chairs of the office to wait while the woman spoke on the phone.
“…Yes, she has a headache…She’s alright, but seems like it’s getting worse. The nurse checked her, but can’t really do much. Sure, she’s at the office. Thank you, Mr. Halstead”
“Becca, your brother will be here as soon as he can. Go get your stuff, I’ll call your dad to let him know”
She didn't really have a headache, but it seemed like "fake it 'til you make it" was a real thing because she was now starting to feel discomfort in her head. Although it might have been because she was struggling not to cry in front of everyone. Her nose was now red, and her eyes were watery. Everybody thought it was due to allergies or the flu, but in reality, she was swallowing hard, trying to retain tears rolling down.
“Let’s go, Beccs”, Jay said while picking up his sister’s backpack from the floor.
The walk to the parking lot was silent; she knew that if she talked, she would burst into tears. A hole in her chest appeared the minute she saw her brother, and now it was growing fast inside of her.
Jay was eagerly typing on his phone, dealing with work issues he couldn't leave for later. He was worried; since he received the call from the school, his gut told him Becca's emergency wasn't about being sick, and now, even looking at her sideways, he could confirm it.
The detective opened the car a few steps before they reached it. Both siblings went to the same side of the truck, the girl ready to jump inside, while her brother was putting her belongings on the back seat. When Jay closed the door, Becca was still outside waiting for him. She was scratching her eye, and as soon as their gazes crossed, she started to silently cry. Instinctively, brother and sister took a step forward to hug each other; there was no time for Jay to bend to her height, so she squeezed his waist tightly.
"Did something happen, or is it only the feeling?" He tilted his ear to be able to hear the answer.
Becca moved her head, saying no, her face still sunken in his stomach, "Only the feeling."
"Alright," he softly said. They stayed like that for a moment before actually going inside the truck.
With a mixture of affection and concern, Jay stared at his sister before starting the car. "Do you want to talk?" He spoke gently. Her delicate attempt to wipe away the evidence of her tears with the sleeve of her sweater tugged at his heartstrings.
Becca despised being seen in such a fragile state; the vulnerability on display only heightened her emotions. It struck her as ironic that the very person who made her feel secure and shielded, her brother, was the one in front of whom she felt the most exposed. In the tumult of her emotions, Jay remained her safe person, the only one she could trust.
"It's the pain in the chest, the black hole. It's growing."
He frowned with a slight nod. Jay knew perfectly what she was talking about, and he hated to be so powerless about it.
"I don't want to go home," she begged. Becca's face made Jay's heart drop; you could see the pain in her puffy eyes and her cheeks a bit swollen along with her pink nose.
He swallowed hard, "I honestly wouldn't take you there even if you asked me to. You are coming with me, but I still have things to do at the bullpen."
“I can wait”
On the road back to the 21st District, Jay’s phone never stopped ringing, but anyway he passed by a drive-thru to get an ice-cream for Becca, a nice attempt to cheer her up a bit.
“Feeling a bit better?” He asked before getting inside of the building. At least, the crying was controlled for a moment. “Alright, let’s go”.
It was obvious she had been crying, but nobody said a thing about it. All the cops, detectives and seargets greeted the girl with a warm smile and acted normal around her.
Becca stayed in the coffee room and never got out of there. After all the weeping, exhaustion took its toll, and she found herself drifting into sleep on the arm of the sofa. Jay periodically entered to check on her, his stress evident as he felt the weight of time pressing against him. The clock relentlessly ticked away, yet the workload showed no sign of diminishing.
Kim noticed, and after preparing to leave by taking her coat and bag, she approached her friend. "Hey! I'm already done here and heading home. If you want, and if she wants to, I can take Becca with me. I just need to pick up Mak from school, and then we'll be home."
The detective hesitated, “Uhm—“
"Look, I don't know what's going on with her, but at least she can properly rest there..." Kim's voice carried a note of genuine concern, her eyes reflecting a mix of empathy and worry for both of them.
They turned their heads to see how the girl was all tangled in her spot.
“Are you sure?”
“Positive. That way you won’t have the pressure—I mean, you’ll still have the pressure, but it will be different knowing she’s comfortable in a safe place…I know the feeling, Jay”
After a few seconds of deliberating in his mind, he thankfully agreed only for his sister’s comfort.
“Don’t worry, don’t rush. You can pick her up whenever you can, doesn’t matter if it’s late”, Burgess said before departing and Jay knew she was honest, “I’ll take care of her”
Makayla was delighted with Becca's presence but was too shy to interact with her. Since they didn't have visitors often, this was kind of a new experience for her.
"Mak," her mom called, "Becca is not feeling very well, would you lend her your bed for a little while so she can rest?"
"Sure!" Despite her short life, Makayla's tender heart had already weathered enough storms, shaping her into a compassionate soul capable of understanding when someone else was beaten down or in pain. She sensed all that in Becca and was willing to make her feel good. "I can even lend her my stuffies," she added as an innocent gesture. Now addressing their guest directly, she continued, "They'll keep you company and won't be scary if you wake up in the dark."
Kim guided Becca to the room and arranged everything for her, picking up some clothes and toys that her daughter had left on the floor. Meanwhile, Makayla was opening drawers and climbing them to reach the highest shelf where the books were placed.
"There you go, make yourself comfortable," Burgess said while still fixing the unmade bed.
“And I’ll read you something to help you sleep”, Makayla approached holding a big book with her small hands.
“Mak, sweetie, no. We’re going out while she sleeps, okay? But you can read to me”, she took her hand to lead her out.
“No, mom. She doesn’t need to be alone right now”, Makayla’s big dark eyes were over Becca. “She needs a story, that’s what you do when I am sad”
Suddenly, the pain in Becca's chest intensified, and the gaping hole seemed to expand. It was as if her new little friend could read her mind. Becca yearned to be alone to release the pent-up tears, yet a lingering understanding told her that solitude might not be the best course of action.
“It’s alright, Kim. This her room, after all”
“Yas!” Mak jumped out of excitement. “Now, you lay down here and close your eyes. I’m going to read you a story that always make me feel better when I am not happy…”
With a smile and slowly going out of the room, Burgess leaved the two girls alone.
“The Little Prince is one of my favorite books too, Makayla”
“I knew it” her smile was bright.
As Becca listened to the reading, she feigned sleep. A few tears escaped her eyes, but she skillfully concealed them. Eventually, the reading ceased, and Becca sensed Mak's tiny face drawing near, checking if she was truly asleep. The youngest Halstead heard Makayla's footsteps departing from the room, but then she returned, placing a stuffed animal between Becca's arms. "Don't leave her alone, Buttons," she whispered before descending the stairs with her mommy.
Slowly, Becca opened her eyes and as soon as she made sure she was alone, she started an intense crying, trying not to make a lot of noise. She turned to give her back to the door, hidding in case someone came in. Clutching the stuffed animal tightly, she cried until exhaustion enveloped her, eventually lulling her into a fitful sleep.
She awoke in Jay's bed, disoriented about how she got there, a Mak's plush toy still nestled between her arms. Rising from the bed, a sudden wave of dizziness hit her, her head throbbing, and the discomfort in her chest persisting. When she emerged into the living room, her brother was seated on the sofa. Becca raised Buttons with one hand, a question mark etched on her face, silently seeking an explanation.
“Makayla insisted you should take it for tonight”, he answered simply.
“Oh. That's sweet”
"How are you feeling?" Jay asked, standing up to approach her, but she just shrugged. "Stupid question?"
"It's just—"
"One of those days," he completed. "I know."
"A terrible one, and it's not over yet" There was a long silence and Jay knew she was trying to say something, so he gave her time. "I was scared, Jay."
Those last words sent shivers down his spine, he understood what she was referring to and was also frightened but couldn't admit it in front of her. He masked his concern, assuring her, "You should never be scared, I'm here with you."
"I know", she gave him a hug.
"Do you want to talk now?" Becca hurriedly said no only with her head, and her brother understood.
"Okay", Jay sighed, "You haven't eaten a thing all day. Food should make you feel better. What about pizza, a movie, and the company of your favorite brother, hm?"
"What? Is Will coming?" Becca teased him, finally smiling.
"Ha! A joke, that's a sign that you are already feeling better."
The evening unfolded and laughter echoed through the room as they enjoyed the movie. Yet, even in her weariness, Becca managed to stay awake for a fleeting moment. As she drifted into sleep, the pain in her chest, a constant companion throughout the day, was miraculously eased by the gentle touch and care of her brother.

It Seemed Like a Good Idea - Chapter 14
Summary - Hailey’s US visa was due to expire, which normally wouldn’t be an issue as the CPD would get it renewed but due to a backlog of paperwork, this wasn’t possible. This meant Hailey was faced with the real possibility of having to leave the country, her job and everything she held dear. That was until Jay offered up a solution which would allow her to stay in Chicago, in Intelligence, with him - they could get married. Getting married was a good idea, right?
Chapters - 14/20
Chapter Title - The Interviews
Notes - this chapter was so much fun to write so I hope you enjoy! Happy Reading ❤️ AO3 Link
They received the letter informing them that their interviews would be that Thursday, giving them only two days to stress about it. Well Hailey was stressing about it, Jay was his usual calm self.
‘Hails, it’ll be fine,’ he said the night before whilst the pair ate dinner. He had made pork chops, mashed potato and veg which Hailey was grateful for. She hadn’t wanted to cook and wasn’t in a position to make a decision regarding a takeaway either so Jay had started to clatter around the kitchen and had taken the decision out of her hands.
‘You keep saying that,’ she said, pushing her peas around the plate absent-mindedly.
‘Because I know it,’ Jay said, reaching across to still the hand that held her fork. ‘We will be fine, our friends will be fine.’
Hailey nodded slightly apprehensively.
‘It’ll all work out, Hails,’ he squeezed her hand lightly. ‘I promise you.’
——————————————————————————-
‘State your name for the record.’
‘Kimberley Burgess,’ Kim said clearly. Although the set up of the room was meant to be intimidating; the plain white walls, the metal table and chairs, the camera and microphone set up to record her words, Kim felt very calm.
She was here to talk about two of her best friends, two of her best friends that had finally stopped dancing around their feelings and had committed themselves to each other and married in such a beautiful ceremony. She had never imagined Hailey would want the big white wedding but she was so pleased she had liked the dress she had got her. She really did look beautiful and Jay had looked overcome looking at her.
‘And you have known Ms Upton and Mr Halstead for how long,’ the Immigration official asked her, pen and paper ready to take notes.
‘I’ve known Jay for 6 years,’ Kim said, remembering when she had first met him the day she had been pulled up from patrol to assist with a case Intelligence was handling. She had found him intimidating to start with, far more so than this interview room, but soon she had realised he was actually a very funny guy and someone you always wanted on your side. He kept his heart shielded, clearly having been burnt more than once, but as soon as Hailey had come along and began to chip away at that, he had started to open up more. ‘And I’ve known Hailey since she started with us in Intelligence about three years ago.’
Her memories of Hailey were just as clear but when the blonde haired cop had walked into the bullpen she had felt nothing but admiration for her. She’d heard all about how they were getting a detective from Toronto joining them, that she was incredibly talented and had taken down many high category targets so Kim had expected someone much older. More fool her. She had been pleasantly surprised and incredibly grateful to have someone else to tone down the testosterone in the group. It hadn’t taken long until they had become fast friends.
‘And you socialise with Ms Upton and Mr Halstead outside of your working environment?’
Kim imagined this officer was a hoot to have at parties, all her questions were drier than a cracker and she hadn’t even hinted at a smile once.
‘I do,’ Kim said with a warm smile which she noted was not returned. ‘We are a close knit unit and Hailey and I are the only women so we get on very well. It’s a tough job so it’s good to be able to relax at the end of the day.’
‘Mhmm,’ the officer acknowledged her words as she made some notes on the notepad. ‘And you found out they were getting married when?’
‘They text the group chat to let us know Jay had popped the question and we were all invited to the wedding,’ Kim responded.
‘And a text wasn’t an odd way of announcing the wedding?’ The officer questioned.
‘Not for Hailey and Jay,’ Kim scoffed. ‘They’ve never been one for big announcements or fan fare, they like to keep themselves to themselves.’
Kim had actually been shocked they had told them at all, had half expected them just to show up to the district one day with rings on their fingers. ‘They were never going to be people who had the wedding with all the bells and whistles but it was perfectly them. They wrote the most beautiful vows and had everyone close to them in attendance and it was truly lovely,’ Kim said honestly with a smile.
‘Everyone close to them,’ the officer repeated, ‘but no one from Ms Upton’s family was present, do you know why?’
Kim felt her skin prickle, the officer was clearly digging for something but she wasn’t here to discuss Hailey’s relationship with her family, and even if she was she didn’t know the entire story, just what she could read from cases they handled and Hailey’s reaction to them. ‘We are Hailey’s family,’ Kim said with a smile firmly fixed to her face.
——————————————————————————
‘Henry Voight, Sergeant of the Intelligence Unit,’ Hank said gruffly, his arms crossed over his chest in his usual intimating fashion. He detested being this side of the interrogation table. Hailey and Jay were lucky he loved them.
‘And Ms Upton and Mr Halstead are officers in your unit,’ the official sitting on the other side of the table asked, riffling through his notes for a fresh sheet of paper to jot Voight’s answers down.
He wasn’t even prepared, Voight shook his head and huffed. ‘Detective Upton and Detective Halstead are my most highly skilled Detectives in my unit.’ Every time he said the word detective, he made sure to put extra emphasis on it. He wasn’t having someone label his team incorrectly, they had earnt their rank and this pencil pusher should give them the respect they deserve.
‘Yes Detectives,’ the official mumbled, still trying to find the correct piece of paper. Voight smirked to himself as he saw a bead of sweat fall from the bloke's forehead onto the table. He could run circles around this fool if he wanted to. He began to tap his foot against the floor waiting less than patiently for the idiot in front of him to ask him something else.
He gave up waiting.
‘Detective Halstead has been in my unit for 7 years and Detective Upton for 3. They are exceptional cops and exceptional people. If you are looking for dirt on them, you won’t find any as I would have found it first. I trust them with my life, and the city of Chicago is better off having them on the force protecting them.’ Hank watched the officers eyes widen and his mouth almost fall open, clearly he was unused to people not just waiting for questions to be asked. Voight had better places to be than sat in this dingy room. ‘And if there’s nothing left to say then I will leave now,’ he said firmly, pushing himself up from the table and standing.
‘Oh and their wedding was beautiful,’ he grunted as he reached the door, tugging it open and excusing himself from the painfully dull proceedings.
——————————————————————————
‘I think I first met Hailey during a case when she brought someone into Chicago Med,’ Will said, trying to rack his brains to remember the exact moment. It was difficult, since Hailey had become a permanent fixture in his brother's life, she had become one in his too. ‘I probably met her in a non-work setting a couple of months later at Molly’s.’
‘And you were originally introduced to her as…’ the official left the question unfinished but Will understood what she was digging for.
‘I was introduced to her as my brother's partner at work, they were partners first, friends later before they became romantically involved,’ Will said firmly.
‘And you knew they were romantically involved because they told you?’ The digging clearly wasn’t letting up.
‘Officially yes, but my brother is not particularly good at hiding his feelings so I knew how he felt about Hailey probably before he was sure,’ Will chuckled remembering all the times he had given Jay shit for clearly harbouring a crush on his partner. Every time he had brought it up he had been rewarded with the look of death, a murmured shut up and the occasional smack to the arm. ‘But they’ve been through a lot together and when you work in a high risk job like theirs you realise life is short and you’ve got to grab the people you love and hold on tight.’
‘Did you know Mr Halstead was going to propose?’
Will smirked at Jay being called Mr Halstead. That title had always been reserved for their father, Jay was Officer Halstead before he was Detective and Will had been Dr Halstead for years. ‘I don’t even think Jay knew he was going to propose,’ when the officer raised an eyebrow questioningly Will dug his heels in, ‘he’s been in love with Hailey whether he realised it or not for years and once they moved in together I think he realised he never wanted to be parted from her so asked her to marry him. It wasn’t some big thing, he didn’t have thousands of rose petals or her favourite bottle of wine ready, it was just them and their love.’ Will said with a soft smile. ‘He called me afterwards and let me know, said he had spoken to Mom about it and she made him realise that life is short.’
‘But your mother is dead?’ The officer questioned with the same amount of tact as a teaspoon. Will rolled his eyes but answered anyway.
‘Both our parents have passed, yes, but he went to Mom’s grave. He always does a couple of times a year, we both do, to give her updates about our lives, get her advice on things,’ Will shrugged. ‘She’d have loved Hailey. Would have welcomed her into the family with open arms, as did I.’
‘And you didn’t think their relationship moved a bit quickly?’ This was the question that Will had been expecting but luckily he was prepared.
‘Officer Cundy, have you ever seen how someone reacts when the person they love is at death's door?’ Will didn’t wait for a response before continuing on. ‘Because I have. And unfortunately I see it every day. And I’ve seen it with my brother and Hailey, more times than they should have had to go through it. When my brother had been shot and they didn’t know if he was going to make it, Hailey sat in that waiting room for hours, refusing to move, to eat, to do anything until she got word that Jay was going to make it. News like that does something to people, you can physically see the weight of the world lift from their shoulders when they get told it’s going to be okay, like their heart is somehow lighter, that their world that was crashing down around them and is being built up again.’ Will could see in the eyes of the man across the table that he was getting through to him. ‘And when Hailey got kidnapped, and they finally found her and the other cop that had been taken, Officer Burgess, my brother was a shell of a man. My brother who has fought in wars for his country, who would gladly take a bullet to save any person in this city, was shaking like a leaf when he knew Hailey was hurt.’
Will leant back in his chair, folding his arms over his chest, ‘so no Officer Cundy. I don’t think their relationship moved quickly. I think they are two people who love each other deeply and I am glad my brother has found a woman like Hailey who makes him happy and he can reciprocate. I only hope one day I find a love like theirs,’ he finished.
Every word he had said was true, even if his brother and his wife had yet to realise it. Jay and Hailey had asked if he needed to prep in advance of the interview, to make sure the story he was selling didn’t have any holes. Will had declined, for the simple reason that it wasn’t a story, not a fictional one anyway. He had told the less than cheery Officer Cundy exactly what he knew, Jay and Hailey were it for each other. He just hoped they realised it before it was too late.
——————————————————————————
‘Sergeant Trudy Platt,’ Trudy said calmly and clearly when instructed to state her name. This process was tedious but Hailey had asked her to do it and she wasn’t about to let her down.
Ever since Hailey had walked into the district 3 years ago, Trudy had felt a draw to the young cop. She didn’t need Hailey to tell her that she’d had a tough life growing up, that she’d experienced the unfortunate truth of being a female cop in a system set up to prioritise men, she could see it in her eyes, how she held herself and how she handled the cases set before her.
Maybe Trudy saw a little of herself in Hailey, someone determined not to let herself be held back by something that was outside of her control. She was proud to have her as a cop in her district, proud that she could call her a friend. She’d never admit that she thought of her as more of a daughter than a friend however, she had a reputation to uphold after all.
She was glad she had found happiness with Jay, someone to treat her the way she deserved to be treated. She trusted Jay to do that, Trudy knew the type of man he was.
‘And Sergeant Platt you have known Ms Upton and Mr Halstead prior to their marriage, correct?’ The young immigration asked with a forced smile.
A Chicago Police Department integration would eat this kid alive, Trudy thought to herself. She wondered if Voight had had the same officer for his interview, she’d have to ask him later and laugh about it.
‘Yes, I have known them since they were both assigned to my district which was approximately 7 years ago for Detective Halstead and 3 years for Detective Upton,’ Trudy said, a hint of boredom colouring her voice. Why call her in just to confirm information they already hold, just a waste of taxpayers money.
‘And you did not know about their relationship until they invited you to their impromptu wedding?’
‘I got confirmation of their relationship when they submitted their change of address forms after moving in together, they are the same rank so they did not need to complete a notice of relationship form,’ Trudy said slightly coolly. She could tell that the officer was trying to catch her out, that wasn’t going to happen. Nobody caught out Trudy Platt.
‘Confirmation?’ The officer asked, pausing with her pen just millimetres from the paper.
‘I long suspected something was going on between the pair of them but both are incredibly private people and I doubt they wanted people to speculate about the status of their relationship so they kept it to themselves,’ she shrugged. ‘Not uncommon for a workplace romance I am sure you’ll find.’
‘I’m sure,’ the young lady hummed. ‘So you were not shocked when the relationship was confirmed?’
‘No,’ Trudy said firmly. ‘I’ve been a cop for a long time, you learn to see things even when people try to keep them quiet.’
——————————————————————————
‘Do you trust Ms Upton and Mr Halstead?’ The official said bluntly, not looking up from where she was still taking notes.
‘Excuse me?’ Kim asked, shocked.
‘Do you trust Ms Upton and Mr Halstead?’ The official repeated slightly slower, raising her gaze from her notepad to catch Kim’s eyes.
‘Do I trust two people who constantly put their lives on the line to protect their city and myself? Do I trust the person who told me, no, ordered me, to save myself when there was a strong possibility that if I did that, she would die as a result? Do I trust the people who when I decided I was adopting a little girl that other people may have thought was a ridiculous idea, showed up for me and supported me through everything? Are you seriously asking me that question?’ Kim said angrily. How dare this officer ask her this.
‘Yes, I am asking you that. And you still haven’t answered me,’ the officer said, her voice ice cold.
‘Yes I trust Ms Upton and Mr Halstead,’ Kim said and couldn’t hold back the sarcasm when she said their names. She had never once called them that and it sounded mildly ridiculous. ‘I trust them with my life. I trust them with my daughter's life.’
‘That will be all Ms Burgess,’ the officer dismissed her calmly, continuing to make notes as Kim stood up and turned to leave with a huff.
‘And by the way, it’s Detective Upton and Detective Halstead, and I’m Officer Burgess,’ Kim spat back as she reached the door. She knew it might not help Hailey and Jay’s case but she was insulted on their behalf by what the officer was implying here. Hailey and Jay were two of the best people she knew, she was proud to call them friends and wouldn’t stand for slander of them.
——————————————————————————-
‘If Ms Upton was refused her visa,’ Trudy’s ears pricked up at the officer's words, ‘would it be easy to fill the vacancy left by her departure within your district?’
If Trudy had predicted the most ridiculous question she would be asked today, she wouldn’t have guessed this would be it.
‘Would it be easy to fill the position held by one of the most talented members of the Chicago Police Department? The Detective who not only made it up the ranks quicker than most of her male colleagues despite the institutional sexism that unfortunately still exists? The same Detective who received the Superintendent's Award of Valour? An award that is only handed out for an outstanding act of bravery or heroism where the individual has demonstrated great acts of selfishness, personal courage and devotion to duty? Why no, I don’t think it would be particularly easy to fill her spot,’ Trudy scoffed.
‘I think we would struggle to ever fill the void left by Detective Upton,’ Trudy said, suddenly touched by the possibility that Hailey may not be able to stay in the city. ‘And if Ms Upton was refused her visa,’ she said, the bitterness coating her words, ‘the Chicago Police Department would lose two of its finest because there is no way Mr Halstead wouldn’t follow her wherever she would go.’
——————————————————————————
Jay and Hailey’s own interview was less eventful but maybe that was because they were able to present a united front and it probably helped that the person interviewing them appeared to have only started in the department the day before.
The young man had stuttered and stumbled over his words, failed to bring the correct case file into the interview room and constantly forgot Jay and Hailey’s names. Hailey was sure it was because Jay was giving him his best Chicago Police Detective Interrogation face which had been known to get even the most stoic criminals to admit to their crimes.
He had asked them how they had met, when they had moved from a platonic friendship to a romantic relationship, whether they had discussed marriage before Jay had proposed and what their future in the city looked like. None of the questions caught them off guard, they had been prepared to answer anything he could possibly have thrown at them.
Like they had with all aspects of their relationship so far, they had decided the closer to the truth they were able to stick, the better and easier it would be. They didn’t need to amend how they met, partners on the job was clearly written in their files. They didn’t need to change how Jay had proposed, he had offered to marry her whilst sitting on the couch, it was as good a proposal as any. The only sticking point had been when they had moved from the platonic to the romantic. That was a slightly more complex discussion.
‘So they are likely to ask us what made us change from just friends to wanting to pursue something more,’ Hailey had said, nervously tapping her foot. She knew when Jay had stopped becoming just her partner and became the most important person in her life - but she had never admitted it to him. It had shifted when he had got shot, when she had for just a moment had to imagine a life without him and it had broken her.
She remembered clearly sitting in that waiting room feeling like everything she had worked towards, everything she valued in her life was crumbling down around her. That the person she was certain would never leave her side was fighting for his life and she couldn’t do a damn thing to help him.
When he had finally woken up and they had allowed her to see him, part of her wanted to tell him, wanted to explain how she felt because there might have been just the slimmest chance that he felt the same. But she was a coward and didn’t. She pushed her feelings down and was content to just be his friend and his partner.
‘Guess that’s the one thing we haven’t really discussed yet,’ Jay said, tugging at his collar that suddenly felt a little tight against his throat. The rest of their conversation had been easy, all the points had been obvious like when they met, when they got engaged, when they got married. They had evidence for all of that. But this….
Jay knew when he had realised he cared more about her than as just a friend. When they had lost her and Kim, and he had blamed himself for putting them in danger. When they found her and she was bloodied and beaten, it had felt like someone had his heart in a vice squeezing tighter and tighter with every breath. But he had never admitted it to Hailey.
He had thought it was ridiculous she would ever feel the same, he was just a best friend to her. And he was happy to be such, he would prefer to have her in his life as that then put it all on the line and lose her.
But now, he was no longer as certain that he would lose her if he admitted how he felt. There were moments here and there where they both seemed to forget the relationship was just for show. Moments when they were alone with no one to prove anything to where they would reach for each other, touching more than they ever had. They would fall onto the couch at the end of the day but instead of watching TV from opposite sides, they’d end up under a shared blanket tucked into each other’s sides.
If their relationship was just for show, who were they on show for in the privacy of their own apartment?
Hailey cleared her throat and pulled Jay from his thoughts. ‘It would make sense if maybe something on the job had made us realise that we wanted more,’ she said quietly. Was that a hint of pink on her cheeks?
‘Yeah,’ Jay nodded, his throat suddenly dry. ‘Like maybe when you got kidnapped with Kim?’ He offered, trying to stay calm and put together like he wasn’t inches away from admitting what was in his heart.
‘That or maybe when you got shot?’ She countered, her eyes staying fixed on the ground.
‘That could work,’ he agreed. He had heard from Will that Hailey had all but held a vigil for him in the Med waiting room, but she did that because they were partners. Didn’t she?
‘It was just over 18 months ago so I guess that fits the time frame you gave Mouse right?’
‘Yeah that fits,’ Jay agreed. ‘Okay so after I got shot we realised we wanted more than just friendship and the other felt the same?’
‘Yep, we both felt the same,’ Hailey said, finally lifting her gaze and meeting his for the first time in a few minutes and he was once again struck by just how blue her eyes were. Like he could ever forget - they floated through his dreams on a regular basis.
Once they had ironed that out, nothing could throw them off. They answered every question honestly, holding firmly onto each other’s hands the entire time. Jay’s thumb rubbing small circles on the back of her hand in a calming motion.
When they exited the room, both let out a small sigh of relief. They walked to the truck that was parked just a block away, neither having the incling to let go of the other's hand.
All they could do now was wait for the result and hope they had put on enough of a show to get her visa granted. Her hand tightened around Jay’s. She really hoped they had, she couldn’t leave. Not now.

Good morning. Still basking in last night’s episode. I have a tremendous amount of agreement with you on the Fangirlish reviews. One thing I’m not clear on is when they talk about Voight lying to Kim and being the cause of the trauma. Maybe initially when she didn’t know, but now?
I know that Voight, Hailey, and Jay did conceal what happened to Roy, but even though they didn’t show it, Kim has to know that Roy’s dead and not a threat. FBI dweeb (I’m drawing a blank on his name, right now), had to report that Roy’s body was found, even though he concealed part of it, by saying a rival killed him.
Am I off base on this? It’s been bothering me a bit, but I can understand it because they could’ve followed up with a scene of someone telling Kim that he’s dead. But I don’t think Voight continued to contribute to her trauma.
Glad to see you back!
Oh I’m gonna go on a ramble and I have no shame. Because Voight completely thinks of Kim as his daughter, and it’s been shown time and time again since season seven. And just because something isn’t shown on screen doesn’t mean Kim doesn’t know.
She’s in therapy. I guarantee if Walton was still out there - or Kim thought he was - it’d have been brought up. It’s too juicy a topic not to being up. She knows he’s dead. Should the show have shown us that? Yeah but last season was Eid plotted so…
But back to my Voight and Kim thing. In 7x11 he hugs her and grins when she tells him she’s pregnant. We’ve never seen Hank Voight do that. Ever. Not even with the woman he raised since she was fifteen. The look on his face outside the hospital room? The way he let her work on the case in 7x13 even though she shouldn’t have? Tell me he doesn’t adore her. Try it.
All through season 8 he’s checking in on her about Makayla. When she’s abducted it’s the “or her daughter” that makes him decide to kill Walton. Watch his face closely in that scene. Walton’s getting beaten, but it’s not until Makayla is threatened that Voight goes feral. There’s a meta I wrote that’s linked in my masterlist about this.
And then season 9 and checking on her in 9x02. Telling her in 9x14 that he wouldn’t bet against her. In 9x15 he’s the only one who knows what Adam and Kim are going through and tries to guide them.
And then last night. If you think for a second that that man was going to pull Kim you’re wrong. If you think that was anything other than a man who is watching her claw back from the brink, and is so proud of her? You’re wrong.
It’s a man who has watched his pseudo daughter battle demons that he can’t imagine, seeing her beat them. It’s a man who can’t tell her how proud of her he is. But he’s showing it in every way he looks at her.
I’ll never say Voight is a good guy. But he truly loves Kim Burgess like a daughter, and if you don’t see that then you are will fully just looking at him to hate him.
