Batfam Covid series part 1
I figured out how to turn off autocorrect so it types âSelinaâ and not âSelenaâ woohoo! Progress! Multiple parts, all longer than usual.
Damian: Why is it everyone has to be within the same household?
Dick: Because itâs quarantine. Meaning you isolate with people youâve been in contact with already that could have the disease.
Jason: I mean, Iâve gotta agree, this seems a bit blown out of proportion. The symptoms arenât reading.
Tim: I think itâs more of the spread thatâs of concern and those with preexisting health conditions being affected more than anything else-
Bruce: *throws tiny robots on the ground that latches to everyoneâs ankles* There.
Jason: HEY! You said I wouldnât be under house arrest again if I didnât blow shit up (on purpose) or cause a full body cast for at least 3 weeks!
Bruce: This isnât house arrest, this is insurance that none of you try to leave and put others at risk of infection.
Damian: That is absurd!
Dick: I gotta say, this feels a little extreme, Bruce.
Tim: Yeah, no. *takes it off*
Jason: How the f*ck?!
Tim: Iâm gonna go stay at my boyfriendâs.
Bruce: The last thing you are doing is leaving this house, Tim. Like you said- itâs a major concern for those of preexisting health conditions.
Selina: I helped Alfred switch your and Damianâs old bedrooms so you are a bit more isolated-
Damian: Excuse me?! I donât want to sleep near Helenaâs room. She continues to make sounds.
Bruce: You donât have a choice. In fact, none of you do. Not until everyone is tested- including anyone youâve been around the last 12 days.
Dick: So no Kori?
Bruce: Has she been tested?
Dick: I mean sheâs been on another planet with Mari for, like, 6 months soooo
Bruce: theyâre fine to stay.
Damian: Can John come over?
Bruce: I donât even let him over when there isnât a pandemic.
Jason: Canât I just be under house arrest at a safe house? I donât care to self isolate- just let me grab a few books and Iâm good for dayyys.
Bruce: Absolutely not.
Tim: Ok than let Bernard come over?
Bruce: No.
Tim: But what if he tests.
Bruce: I donât like that boy being in my house.
Tim: Oh come on. He only broke, like, two or three things in the cave.
Jason: Didnât that somehow include the giant penny?
Damian: and the window to the Batmobile.
Dick: *sighs* The chair to the batcomputer has squeaked ever since he left that night.
Bruce: My cape.
Alfred: He was rather harsh on the grappling hooks as well, Master Drake-
Tim: I said I loved a man, not a smart one-
Bruce: No Bernard.
Tim: oh come on! Dick gets to bring Kori!
Dick: and my kid.
Tim: Oh come on you barely see her but three times a year.
Dick: Iâve known her seven months and sheâs been gone six for some Tamaranian ritual or something humans canât be at!
Selina: Will all of you stop shouting. If my baby wakes up, I will find a way to make all of you pay.
Bruce: The only person with a second option on where theyâre staying is Damian-
Jason: Bull shit!-
Bruce: Talia has asked he go back to the leagueâs temple since COVID hasnât likely breeched them yet.
Damian: Can I bring my children?
Bruce: Only the dog.
Damian: than no.
Bruce: youâll have to take that up with your mother.
Damian: Iâll make this much clear- I would sacrifice each of you individually for the sake of my children-
Tim: you mean your pets?
Damian: they are family in this house, Drake. I canât say the same for you.
Tim: You really donât expect me to live next to this brat for literal months, right? Heâll kill me by the end of the week! Iâm much safer at my place.
Bruce: As of right now this is all of our place. Stop bickering and get used to the idea of being under the same roof for a while.
Cassandra: It could be fun! We can even have a family dinner after weâre all tested.
Damian: oh joy. Sharing food with the nuisance Drake and the pig that is Todd. Fantastic.
Jason: Donât you have a mommy to call?
Damian: Donât you have a casket to sleep in!
Jason: Oh f*ck you!
Bruce: now boys-
Tim: Is this seriously how you expect me to live?!
Cassandra: we can make breakfast for dinner and by then maybe the weather will be nice enough to open windows and set up candles-
Jason: you think you have it bad?! Iâm surrounded by the same people who-
Damian: I better not have to sit at that dinner by Drake, Cain, or so help me god-
Bruce: enough!
Tim: For my own safety please god do not do that cass-
Jason: I donât see why youâre complaining when Iâm the one who has to-
Bruce: *louder* enough
Tim: I have a right to feel however I want!
Damian: If that is the case, I feel you should all be disowned-
Dick: why are we all arguing again?!
Damian/Tim/Jason/Bruce: SHUT UP, DICK/GRAYSON
Dick:⊠what did I do? đ„ș
Helena: *screaming from upstairs*
Selina:âŠ
Bruce:âŠ
Everyone:âŠ
Bruce:âŠweâll take this outside.
Selina: That would be great, thank you.

On Lesbianism
Iâll state it at the top here, because many have not understood my stance. The purpose of this essay is not to say that Lesbian cannot mean âFemale homosexual.â Rather, my objective is to show that Lesbian means more than that single definition suggests. Female Homosexuals are lesbians, unless they personally do not want to use that label. Now, on with the show: Lesbianism is not about gatekeeping, and I donât want to have to keep convincing people that the movement popularized by someone who wrote a book full of lies and hate speech then immediately worked with Ronald Reagan is a bad movement. In the early â70s, groups of what would now be called âgender criticalâ feminists threatened violence against many trans women who dared exist in womenâs and lesbian spaces. For example, trans woman Beth Elliott, who was at the 1973 West Coast Lesbian Feminist Conference to perform with her lesbian band, was ridiculed onstage and had her existence protested. In 1979, radical feminist Janice Raymond, a professor at the University of Massachusetts, wrote the defining work of the TERF movement, âTranssexual Empire: The Making of the Shemale,â in which she argued that âtranssexualismâ should be âmorally mandating it out of existenceââmainly by restricting access to transition care (a political position shared by the Trump administration). Soon after she wrote another paper, published for the government-funded, National Center for Healthcare Technology â and the Reagan administration cut off Medicare and private health insurance coverage for transition-related care.
Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminism is a fundamentally unsustainable ideology. Lesbianism is a fundamentally sustainable existence.
There used to be a lesbian bar or queer bar or gay bar in practically every small townâââsometimes one of each. After surviving constant police raids, these queer spaces began closing even Before the AIDS epidemic. Because TERFs would take them over, kick out transfems and their friends. Suddenly, there werenât enough local patrons to keep the bars open, because the majority had been kicked out. With Americaâs lack of public transportation, not enough people were coming from out of town either.
TERFs, even beyond that, were a fundamental part of the state apparatus that let AIDS kill millions.
For those who donât know, Lesbian, from the time of Sappho of Lesbos to the about 1970âČs, referred to someone who rejects the patriarchal hierarchy. It was not only a sexuality, but almost akin to a gender spectrum.
That changed in the 1970âČs when TERFs co-opted 2nd Wave feminism, working with Ronald fucking Reagan to ban insurance for trans healthcare.
TERFs took over the narrative, the bars, the movement, and changed Lesbian from the most revolutionary and integral queer communal identity of 2 fucking THOUSAND years, from âSomeone who rejects the patriarchal hierarchyâ to âA woman with a vagina whoâs sexually attracted to other women with vaginasâ
How does this fit into the bi lesbian debate? As I said, Lesbian is more of a Gender Spectrum than anything else, it was used much in the same way that we use queer or genderqueer today.
And itâs intersectional too.
See, if you were to try to ascribe a rigid, biological, or localized model of an identity across multiple cultures, it will fail. It will exclude people who should not be excluded. ESPECIALLY Intersex people. Thatâs why âTwo Spiritâ isnât something rigid- it is an umbrella term for the identities within over a dozen different cultures. In the next two sections, I have excerpts on Two-Spirit and Butch identity, to give a better idea of the linguistics of queer culture: This section on Two-Spirit comes from wikipedia, as it has the most links to further sources, I have linked all sources directly, though you can also access them from the Wikipedia pageâs bibliography: Two-Spirit is a pan-Indian, umbrella term used by some Indigenous North Americans to describe Native people who fulfill a traditional ceremonial and social role that does not correlate to the western binary. [1] [2] [3] Created at the 1990 Indigenous lesbian and gay international gathering in Winnipeg, it was "specifically chosen to distinguish and distance Native American/First Nations people from non-Native peoples." [4] Criticism of Two-Spirit arises from 2 major points, 1. That it can exasperate the erasure of the traditional terms and identities of specific cultures.      a. Notice how this parallels criticisms of Gay being used as the umbrella      term for queer culture in general. 2. That it implies adherence to the Western binary; that Natives believe these individuals are "both male and female" [4]      a. Again, youâll notice that this parallels my criticisms of the TERF definition of Lesbian, that tying LGBT+ identities to a rigid western gender binary does a disservice to LGBT+ people,âespecially across cultures. âTwo Spirit" wasnât intended to be interchangeable with "LGBT Native American" or "Gay Indian"; [2] nor was it meant to replace traditional terms in Indigenous languages. Rather, it was created to serve as a pan-Indian unifier. [1] [2] [4] âThe term and identity of two-spirit "does not make sense" unless it is contextualized within a Native American or First Nations framework and traditional cultural understanding. [3] [10] [11] The ceremonial roles intended to be under the modern umbrella of two-spirit can vary widely, even among the Indigenous people who accept the English-language term. No one Native American/First Nations' culture's gender or sexuality categories apply to all, or even a majority of, these cultures. [4] [8] Butch: At the turn of the 20th century, the word âbutchâ meant âtough kidâ or referred to a menâs haircut. It surfaced as a term used among women who identified as lesbians in the 1940s, but historians and scholars have struggled to identify exactly how or when it entered the queer lexicon. However it happened, "Butchâ has come to mean a âlesbian of masculine appearance or behavior.â (I have heard that, though the words originate from French, Femme & Butch came into Lesbian culture from Latina lesbian culture, and if I find a good source for that I will share. If I had to guess, there may be some wonderful history to find of it in New Orleansâor somewhere similar.) Before âbutchâ became a term used by lesbians, there were other terms in the 1920s that described masculinity among queer women. According to the historian Lillian Faderman,âbull daggerâ and âbull dykeâ came out of the Black lesbian subculture of Harlem, where there were âmamaâ and âpapaâ relationships that looked like butch-femme partnerships. Performer Gladys Bentley epitomized this style with her menâs hats, ties and jackets. Women in same-sex relationships at this time didnât yet use the word âlesbianâ to describe themselves. Prison slang introduced the terms âdaddy,â âhusband,â and âtop sargeantâ into the working class lesbian subculture of the 1930s. This lesbian history happened alongside Trans history, and often intersected, just as the Harlem renaissance had music at the forefront of black and lesbian (and trans!) culture, so too can trans musicians, actresses, and more be found all across history, and all across the US. Some of the earliest known trans musicians are Billy Tipton and Willmer âLittle Axâ BroadnaxâBoth transmasculine musicians who hold an important place in not just queer history, but music history.
Lesbian isnât rigid & biological, itâs social and personal, built up of community and self-determination.
And it has been for millennia.
So when people say that nonbinary lesbians arenât lesbian, or asexual lesboromantics arenât lesbian, or bisexual lesbians arenât lesbian, itâs not if those things are technically true within the frameworkâââItâs that those statements are working off a fundamentally claustrophobic, regressive, reductionist, Incorrect definition Youâll notice that whilst I have been able to give citations for TERFs, for Butch, and especially for Two-Spirit, there is little to say for Lesbianism. The chief reason for this is that lesbian history has been quite effectively erased-but it is not forgotten, and the anthropological work to recover what was lost is still ongoing. One of the primary issues is that so many who know or remember the history have so much trauma connected to "Lesbianâ that they feel unable to reclaim it. Despite this trauma, just like the anthropological work, reclamation is ongoing.
Since Sappho, lesbian was someone who rejects the patriarchal hierarchy. For centuries, esbian wasnât just a sexuality, it was intersectional community, kin to a gender spectrum, like todayâs âqueerâ. When TERFs co-opted 2nd Wave feminism, they redefined Lesbian to âwoman w/ a vag attracted to other women w/ vagsâ. So when you say âbi lesbians arenât lesbianâ itâs not whether thatâs true within the framework, itâs that youâre working off a claustrophobic, regressive, and reductionist definition.
I want Feminism, Queerness, Lesbianism, to be fucking sustainable.
I wanna see happy trans and lesbian and queer kids in a green and blue fucking world some day.
I want them to be able to grow old in a world we made good.

This is part 6 of the Comprehensive Analysis of c!Tommy and c!Dreamâs relationship during the Exile Arc
Part 1 - Â Part 2 - Â Part 3 - Â Part 4 - Â Part 5
Here we go again. So, just to clarify: I honestly think that for the Mexican Dream stream almost only the parts where Dream is Dream and not Mamacita are canon, but I will check those other ones out as well for anything interesting. Dristaâs stream however is like as vaguely canon as possible, so I will mostly give a general outline of it more so then analizing it bit by bit.
That said, a reminder that from here on out I will be only talking about the characters unless stated otherwise and that we will be talking about sensitive topics, so keep that in mind.
First stream we will be looking at is the infamous Mexican Dream stream:Â Tommy Speaks to Mexican Dream in Exile
Once again Tommy wakes up drowning, again just slightly further away from the coast in the opposite direction from LâManburg. He also immediately takes off his armour.
âWait, no, we donât have enough friends to afford being angry at peopleâ (by now even Tommy himself doesnât value much his own feelings)
âSo at the end of our last Dream smp stream, uh, we died [non canonically], but itâs okay because I got some of our things-â *Dream joins the game* *distressed noises* (Iâm never not gonna point out Tommyâs reactions at Dream appearing)
Dream appears and immediately digs the hole for the armour. Tommy immediately gives it up actually apologizing for not doing it even before. Also right after this Dream investigates on wether or not someone visited Tommy while he was gone and he finds out about Ranboo.
âIâve just been trying to keep you companyâ âYeah, yeah, no, itâs been pretty niceâ âWeâve became better friendsâ âYeah, yeah, we haveâ (Dream and his âfriendshipâ agenda)
This is when they meet Mexican Dream who was just outside Tommyâs Nether portal. An interesting thing I want to point out is Dream immediately moving directly in front of Tommy when he notices him (probably got used by now to assuming a defensive position).
âWeâll make this place like home man...â (MD already making everything better)
âWhat did you [Dream] do to him man?â âNo but he is my friend now, apparently- I think. You are my-?â (immediately starts questioning things with MD presence there challenging Dreamâs)
âIâm your new friend manâ âOh, do you need me to put my items in a pit for you?â (...) âThis is what Dream always makes me do, is this right?â (looking once again at Dream for approval in the last bit)
âHey, wait, so now that youâre here do I even need to follow this man?â (talking about Dream here)
âOkay, wait, how do I know that this isnât a Dream? Because I keep having Dreamâs and shit. Iâm like a hallucinatorâ (so we can add recurrent hallucinations to his ever increasing list of symptoms)
"Even though he may be naked and homeless- are you homeless? Do you need a home?â âIâm homeless manâ (And this is why MD was a problem to Dream, he was more then willing to stay with Tommy)
âOh no that guy [a squid] has committed suicide just at the sound of it! Oh thatâs... I envy himâ (he is now openly suicidal)
âI donât like Mexican Dream, Mexican Dream is weirdâ (sure itâs not just because he admitted to wanting to move to Logstedshire permanently there Dream?)
âAlright, Thomas, come over here, come over hereâ *Dream starts following as well*Â âNO! NO! You stay the fuck away!â (this is why we love MD)
âYou know actually, he is sort of actually borderline my ownerâ (I hate that there was a time were both Tommy and Dream thought this)
After this Dream swaps for Mamacita, so Iâm really not sure how canon things are here... there is a scene where MD comforts Tommy while heâs looking at pictures of Tubbo and then Mamacita destroys all but one of them.
âI really miss my family manâ âOh I miss my- I miss my family tooâ (would his family be Tubbo for Tommy?)
Dream does swap back to being Dream for the last 25 minutes. And he proceeds to immediately takes one of MDâs lives. Itâs technically his second life because the first one was from a creeper exploding.
âNo no shoot me not them, [the pictures of MDâs friends(?)] actually shoot them. I definitely donât have my confidence backâ (Dream immediately setting him back on his progress)
Right after the kill Tommy asks if he can bodyguard Dream in hopes of keeping him and MD from fighting so that MD would be safe. It doesnât work. Also pretty sure that Dream canonically decapitated somebody.Â
âMexican Dream, I-Iâve had enough of youâ (Dream immediately ging back to be terrifying right there)
Dream then takes MDâs third canon life. Of course, in true Dream style, he immediately ignores all the distress Tommy is in and moves on like nothing happened.
âYou just killed my last friendâ (I hate that heâs not even angry)
âSo Dream, do I not have any friends left?â âWhat do you mean âyou donât have any friends leftâ? You have me!â (Dream is the only friend that Dream is willing to allow Tommy to have)
Also I want to point out how Dream keeps ignoring any and all accusations of having killed MD, despite having done so right in front of Tommy. And then he proceeds to try and convince Tommy that he died of a drug overdose (which is just yet another example of gaslighting there from Dream). He then proceeds to make Tommy burn his remains, despite Tommy opposing this quite a bit.
âI know I havenât really delved into my health with you ever, because I know you donât really care, but I donât think I have really long leftâ (at least he is somewhat aware about Dream not caring)
âI thought maybe we could have someone move in with us today, no. No He doesnât allow that. Which is fine! Which is fine because, you know, itâs his- his uh- his rules nowâ
Once again I want to point out that this truly is just a glorified kidnapping. Tommy not only is confined to a very small area and not allowed to keep many items, he also doesnât get to have anyone move in his area. Dream doesnât want him to have any company that isnât him, going as far as to literally kill someone to insure it (not too different from what he was planning to do in the season 2 finale). Either way the stream ends on a very pessimistic note about Tommy not having the will to go on for much longer at this point.Â
Now letâs move on to the Drista stream:Â TommyInnit Speaks To Dream's Sister AGAIN
As I said Iâll just give a general outline for this one since itâs honestly barely canon as is, so here we go:
Tommy doesnât start off drowning this time. Drista arrives and starts immediately being chaotic as usual. They mess around for a while in the Nether, start building a tower (Dream at one point tries to convince Drista that it was Tommy to have killed MD), get bored and mess around some more. Also Drista gives Tommy a bedrock block and writes âDristaâ out of bedrock near Logstedshire. Then Drista convinces Dream to let them go back to the main Smp for a while (though we do see Punz trying to kill him for breaking the rules before finding out Dream had given his permission). Once in Dream Smp they meet up with Quackity for a little bit.
Also, Tommy, king of always being in character, constantly asks very uncertainly:Â âAre you sure that Iâm allowed here? This feels wrong...â
They then spawn in a bunch of dogs and wonder around in the smp. After a while Techno gets added to the call and Tubbo starts kinda following them around (though Tommy thinks he has a hallucination). I honestly donât think any of this is canon. Anyway after a while Techno gets a bedrock block as well and he almost manages to give a stolen Pigstep to Tommy, but it gets intercepted. After a while their time is up and he has to go back by Dreamâs order.Â
âIf you donât see me again in this, you know, in this shape, Iâm sorry. (...) Yeah, in this alive form on this server... you might see me you knoa a bit- a bit- I donât know... maybe a bit ghostlyâ (foreshadowing to his death that never actually happened during the Exile Arc thankfully)
The stream ends with a promise from Dream that heâll be there the day after.
Moving on to the last one for today, we have Quackityâs visit:Â Quackity Visits TommyInnit in Exile
So, Quackity decides to go visit Tommy to try (and miserably failing) to lift his mood by giving him gifts supposedly from everyone in LâManburg (which are pictures).
âIâve got no reason to liveâ (and we start off immediately in the most depressing way possible)
Also, while weâre talking about this stream I have to point out that Tommy has a lot of self-harming behaviours, mostly drowning himself and shooting himself with arrows. Which is rather worrying to say the least.
âBig Q I have very little will to live right nowâ (again he's very open about his suicidal thoughts by now)
âForget about Tubbo! Listen, listen Tommy, there are so many things you can turn to when youâre depressed, alright?â âIâm not depressed... Iâve got Dream, Iâve got Dream, Iâve got Dreamâ âDream?! (...) Who escorted you out of LâManburg? Who escorted you out of LâManburg? Who gave you 30 minutes to go to Lâmanburg? [In the Drista visit]â âI want Dreamâ
This is Quackity trying albeit clumsily, to break Tommy out of Dreamâs conditioning, though by this point it was far too ingrained for anything to be effective. Also we can see Tommy asking for Dream when he is distressed, which is something that keeps happening during the Bedrock Boys Arc as well.
After a little bit they decide to build a church and a âgambling placeâ. Techno also joins them after a while. (Also, according to Quackity, c!Dream is canonically racist for killing MD, do with that what you will). Also why does Quackity have a flight or flirt instinct with Techno?
Tommy, sarcastically:Â âIâm fine, Iâm okay, itâs not like I have canonical depressionâ. That is a fair objection in any and all conversations.Â
The stream end a while later with nothing else of note. It is very funny though, so do give it a watch if you feel like it.

Revamp of my Film Noir Au, now named Mafia AuÂ
Danny lives a double-life, but this time is an hitman instead of a superhero, and all ghosts (minus Clockwork) are his targets/victims
Because like you know I love Aus where Danny isnât playing nice đ
xxx
Additional Arts with Jazz/Vlad/Dani and Au Information below the âKeep Readingâ
(Triggers Warning: mention of violence and death)Â
âââââââââââââââââââââââ Name: Daniel James Fenton Nickname: Danny Occupation: Part Time Nasty Burger employee / Pro Hitman Age: 23 Codename: Phantom Kill Count: ??? Personal Gun: Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm Abilities: Smart, good liar, social skills, self-defense, guns skills, knife skills, first aid, parkour
History:Â
Daniel Fenton is the youngest son of Maddie and Jack Fenton. His parents died when he was still in middle school, leaving him alone with his hospitalized older sister Jazz Fenton and a lot of debts.
In high school, he started to steal money to keep his parentsâ house and pay for Jazzâs hospitalization.
One day, without noticing he was stealing drug dealers, he accidentally got caught in a shoot-out. After the slaughter, hidden behind a bin, he met âThe Master of Timeâ a professional hitman. At first the hitman wanted to kill him in order to erased any witness but Danny begged him to spare his life and to teach him assassination instead. Confused but intrigued by so much will, and after serious warnings the hitman accepted Danny as his apprentice. One year after, Danny got his first mission and target, an ex-policeman by the name of Percival Walker.
In the beginning Danny only wanted to target dubious people, but after being call « monster » by one of his victim, and then killing the innocent witness Dorathea Legrand, he stopped caring and started to accept missions with innocents and even children.
Each mission usually brought him between 15â000$ and 30â000$, after the intermediate commission he stored the rest on 5 separate bank accounts with different names, and lied to Jazz about his current job, saying that their parents left them a lot of insurance money.
He approximately killed 3-6 persons a year but hadnât killed anyone in the last year and started to run out of money. In April, he gladly accepted his next mission, a wealthy businessman in the name of Vladimir Masters.
Morals:Â
Danny is now ok to kill people, after all animals kill to eat, humans also kill animals for food. Receiving money to kill somebody isnât so different from receiving money to butcher a cow for steak. After long conversations with his vegan friend Sam, he concluded that animals' lives donât worth less than human lives. Moreover humans kill other humans, for oils or other horrible beliefs (racism, homophobia etcâŠ). At least he does it to help his sister and not twisted pleasure. Like he says âHe didnât have a choice and canât go back.â
Danny used to but doesn't have regrets anymore, âWhat's done is doneâ and what he earns help him to keep Fenton Works and Jazz alive by moving her to a better hospital.Â
He doesnât have guilt either, the one to blame is the person who asks him to kill. The one to blame is the person who wants to kill, not the knife. Like a knife he is only a âtoolâ.
Even if he never sees a ghost he believes in a sort of afterlife, and isnât scared of death. He only hopes to survive long enough until Jazz fully heals.
Memorable Kills:
Mission 1: Jailbreak Target name: Percival Walker Occupation: Prison Guardian, ex-policeman Cause of Death: Shooted in the head
Mission 2: Djinn Target name: ? Occupation: Secret mistress of a wealthy businessman Cause of Death: Stabbed in the throat Notes: Commissioned by the businessmanâs jealous wife.
Mission ?: Specter Target name: ? Occupation: Teen therapist/counselor Cause of Death: Shouted several time all over her body Notes: Called Danny « freak » and « monster » right before death.
Mission ?: Plague Target name: Aragon Legrand Occupation: Heir of a powerful wealthy family Cause of Death: Shouted in the head Notes: Dorathea Legrand, Aragonâs sister, unexpectedly intervened during the mission, trying to protect her brother. She was also killed to avoid witnesses.
Mission ?: Lullaby Target: Ember McLain Occupation: Diva Cause of Death: Burned alive in her house, to make it look like an accident
Mission ?: BlueBlood Target name: ? Occupation: Rich Young Heir of a wealthy family Cause of Death: Suffocated in his sleep Notes: Youngest target, he was only 8
Mission ?: Snow Target name: ? Occupation: Journalist & Books Critic Cause of Death: Shouted in the head
xoxoxoxo
Name: Jasmine Panthea Fenton Occupation: Hospitalized civilian Age: 24 Nickname (by Danny): Jazz, and sometimes before her hospitalization Panny
History:
Hospitalized for a long time her health seems to deteriorate with each passing day, though moving to a better hospital seems to have stabilized her a bit.
Danny is making sure to visit her at least twice a week to keep her company and brought her plenty of books he lends from the library (even if she doesnât always have the strength to read its, she is happy to have Danny to keep her company).
Though weaker, Jazz is intelligent and doesnât believe one second the âinsurance moneyâ excuse, but she lets Danny has his secrets anyway until the day he decides to tell her everything. Little she suspects her baby brother, who smells like fried food and cheap burgers, has his hands covered with blood.
xoxoxoxo
Name:Â Unknown but his Initials are C.W. Occupation: Retired Hitman, intermediate Age: ??? Codename: Master of Time Nickname (by Danny): ClockWork Kill Count: ???
History:Â
After teaching everything he knows to Danny, he got shot in the knee and forced to retire. He now uses his old connections to act as an intermediate to find him missions.
Clockwork knows Danny only kill to help his sister and is actually very protective of him. He tries to help him and keep him as far as he can from too dangerous missions, even if Phantomâs skills and abilities to kill fast without letting traces are highly sought-after, resulting in more dangerous missions and famous targets.
xoxoxoxo
Mission ?: Plasmius Target name: Vladimir Mikhailovich Masters Occupation: One of the wealthiest businessman of the world Nickname (by Danny): Fruitloop Age: 49 Note: The bounty for his head would be able to finish paying Dannyâs debts
History:Â
Vlad has a lot of enemies. He is a billionaire and is always on the right side of the law but also do a lot of devious stuffs in the shadows (child labor, ecologic disasters etcâŠ). For humanity's sake, he is literally better dead.
Danny tracked Vlad for months before having the chance to point a gun on the almost untouchable man.
xoxoxoxo
Name: Danielle Masters Dead Name: Kim S. Occupation: Vladâs personal bodyguard, keeps an eye on her masterâs security 24/7 Age: 22 Nickname (by Danny): Elle Kill Count: ??? the pre-pancetta snippet: early december, 3 months before the world went to shit
đlevi gets sick [levi grumbles in the background]
it was the pre-pandemic flu season. levi caught it at work and just his luck, it was pretty bad for him. but healthcare is expensive, capitalism sucks, so he wore a mask and still went to work the next day, thinking bedrest during the weekend would be enough. erwin kindly dropped off some sports drinks while hange gave him a new bag of black tea leaves. oc comes home to find him almost asleep at the table while waiting for water to boil for his tea and her senses tingle. she just knows. levi is pretty out of it by then, very pissed, feeling like shit, but still thinking about the slack he has to pick up at work. oc is very concerned because he looks awful. she bugs him and asks him if heâs okay with her checking him up. he is about to tell her to piss off but what the hell, lucky his roomieâs a doctor and heâll take free healthcare when he can. so he nods once in dramatic brooding levi fashion.
her hands are cool on his forehead and neck, it feels so good, and levi is really trying not to accidentally moan out loud. when she brings out her stethoscope and asks him to take deep breaths, his focus is on her hand absentmindedly rubbing his shoulder [levi thoughts: heâs really out of it if this is all he can focus on]. ocâs brow furrows when she finds out heâs had only one cup of tea for the entire day and only one meal the day before. he says heâs brewing more, but oc is not having it! she heats up some leftover soup she has and makes him eat before handing him a tylenol. levi feels unsteady and weak but heâs trying to keep up the iâm-fine-itâs-just-the-flu facade. oc sees right through it and tails him to his room.
she helps him to bed, all while saying heâll need meds for the virus and he needs to eat and drink more fluids because heâll need an IV drip if not. even if itâs just the flu, he got a pretty bad case. levi strips off his shirt before he drops onto his pillows, grumpy and dismissive, telling her to just leave the prescription. he can handle it. oc snorts before leaving him alone (for now)
levi wakes up to rustling sounds and finds oc by his bedside setting up some stuff. his head is pounding, entire body is aching, and his cough is killing his throat. heâs very grumpy and is about to tell oc to just let him be but he gets a coughing fit. oc rubs his back while checking his vitals, her voice soft with worry as she asks him how he is feeling. he says he went to the bathroom but thatâs it. he doesnât see oc frown, but heâs more than annoyed that he is disturbed when she digs him out of the blankets. she helps him sit up, propping him on his pillows, and she makes him eat more soup, drink some tea, and take his meds. his throat is cooling and he realizes belatedly that she made him strong mint tea. heâs just swallowing whatever so he can go back to sleep [levi is trying very hard not to vocalize his disappointment whenever her hands leave him]. oc sighs at the little care her patient has for himself, but she tells him that he needs a drip at this point. sheâs not satisfied with how little heâs been eating and drinking. levi is ready to throw hands because he refuses to spend thousands of dollars for 2 hours at the emergency room and get scammed by health insurance just so they can give him IV fluids, but oc surprises him by saying sheâs all set up, and if heâs okay with it, she can do it here.
he shrugs and holds out his hand. the skin of her hands are a little rough with a few calluses, her touch so light and sure. the needle pinches but the pain dulls after a few seconds. he watches oc taping up the line and securing his hand to some makeshift splint so it doesnât move around much. oc hangs up the bottle on the hanger she installed on the wall lamp by his bed before heading out. levi tries to fall back into sleep again. suddenly, he feels a damp cool cloth brush his forehead and his face while another hand runs through his hair gently. heâs groggy and he squirms because what. he hears oc shushing him, saying something about sponge baths for fever, and heâs just so not used to tenderness and care, and sheâs sponging down his neck and his chest, running over his arms, turning him on his side gently so she doesnât jostle him into wakefulness. her hands are firm and gentle as they wipe down his back and itâs cool and soothing and so good over his heated skin. he falls asleep in minutes. this never happens.
he thinks oc drops in once more in the middle of the night because he remembers someone holding him up to take something. when he wakes up the next morning, his fever is gone and he feels like himself again. he sees an empty bottle on his bedside table which means oc must have changed his drip too. the one heâs hooked to is almost gone. heâs in the middle of answering a work email on his phone when oc, already dressed for work, pops in to check on him. she has a tray in hand, looking genuinely relieved and happy that heâs better. his knows his appetite is back because the smell immediately makes his mouth water. he is very hungry after 3 days of soup and tea. she made really good pancakes, fried bacon to a perfect crisp, and the scrambled eggs are savory and creamy. itâs killing him. he can forgive the tea bag from a packet. levi is still a tea snob. oc is cheery, chirping that heâs good to go without a drip as long as he keeps up his food and fluids.
oc: water, tea, or pocari sweat, levi! none of the sugary sports drinks erwin left you, that stuff is a scam.
levi: i donât have pocariâ
oc: i bought you some, theyâre in the drinks cupboard!
levi: whyâ
oc: itâs not just sugar, it has the electrolytes you need!!
she unhooks the IV and takes out his line, lays out his medication regimen and tells him to please call her if he starts feeling bad again. levi rolls his eyes and bats her concern away, grumbling that heâs fine and well enough, but heâs listening to every word she says. he utters a small thank you because how on earth does he convey his immense gratitude in words, he is not used to words!!! his cheeks feel very warm. oc giggles and ruffles his hair. she understands her roomieâs not talkative, but his soft gaze betrays everything beneath his gruff exterior. his shyness is adorable even if he was a grumpy old man while sick. oc thinks that her theory of him being 89 years old deep inside might be right after all. she sternly tells him to rest and lay off strenuous activities until heâs really recovered.
oc: rest. no cleaning today.
levi: my roomâ
oc: no. cleaning. today.
and just like that, sheâs off to work [levi thoughts: wtf she works on sundays?]. all that levi can think of for three days, or more like since that day, are her gentle, comforting touches, her kind smiles, and how pretty she is. he tries, he really tries to push back the thoughts and bury the memories, but all efforts become in vain for him the next week.
heâs reading on the couch and relaxing for the night when oc comes out of her room looking like a fucking goddess. sheâs in a deep green dress of flowing silk with thigh-high slit, sporting a dark, vibrant red lip, complaining of some recognition ceremony she has to attend for one of her bosses at work. she pouts while slipping on pumps that make her legs look even more stunning. levi is aware that he is staring and has tuned out her voice, so he forces himself out of it. he remembers basic conversation etiquette and lamely asks about the party. oc says itâs a black-tie-long-gown thing thatâs a waste of her time. she twists her hair up in a messy bun and puts on earrings, grumbling that this is the most formal sheâll go. levi is mildly amused when she says sheâll nick a bottle of good champagne and some desserts before she escapes the party in an hour. tops.
levi: what if you get caught?
oc: they can spare one bottle and a few cupcakes
levi: and what reason have you come up with if they start interrogating you?
oc: my roommate is sad and a stress-eat is essential after shitty weeks of being underpaid laborers *cheeky smile*
he rolls his eyes. when she steps out their door (her uberâs there), levi counts to ten before groaning very loudly to let his frustrations out.
but she really did steal and bring home the good stuff, squealing in excitement when she sees that he was still up. he actually waited for her to get home but she doesnât need to know that. they shared fruit tarts and fancy mini-cakes and worked through the bottle of champagne while bonding over their mutual disdain for assholes at work. conversation was open and easy, and levi cannot remember when he has been this comfortable around others who werenât old friends of his. he was in an old shirt and jogger shorts. oc was still in her dress, barefoot, lipstick still perfect and bun still messy, picking a strawberry off the last cake while laughing at his dry jab about her boss. and jesus christ, she was exquisite.
at this point, denial begins to trickle in, but levi doesnât know that yet. itâs just the champagne, right?
end. this was so mf long, iâm so sorry đ anyway this is insanely self-indulgent, and this is me coping with the pandemic (and with SnK ending today)
AHHHHHHH I LOVE ALL OF THIS ANON!!! SO MUCH!!!! PLEASE THIS HIT ALL THE MARKS!! Levi being reluctant to having someone take care of him, oc picking up on him not feeling well even though heâs not really showing it, and eventually just giving him the care and attention he needs (without suffocating him because you know he would be grumpy about that). I love this wow, seriously.Â
AND THE END!! When theyâre drinking together and heâs feeling better, you know damn well he didnât even want her to leave in the first place, and IM SO GLAD HEâS FINALLY REALIZING!! Levi, my beloved, you are in love it is not the champagne đđ
#đ anon#you're so lovely my dear thank you so much for sharing#i kept this for a while just to reread it i love it so much!!#levi.ask#minicanons

What I think about COVID-19 this morning -Â Malia Jones, PhD, MPH
What I think about COVID-19 this morning
March 5, 2020
Maybe I'm the closest thing you personally know to an infectious disease epidemiologist. Maybe not--I'm not an expert on this virus by any stretch, but I have general knowledge and training from studying epidemics that is applicable, so here are my thoughts.Â
First and foremost: we are going to see a tremendous increase in the number of US cases of COVID-19 in the next week. This is not because of some new pattern in the spread of the disease, but rather due to a major change in the requirements to be tested. Until yesterday, if you had flulike illness but had not recently traveled to China, Italy, South Korea, or Iran, you could not be tested. This is just the way healthcare works, you get tested if you meet the case definition and the case definition included travel.
As of yesterday, you can be tested if you are sick and have a doctor's order to be tested. So expect things to feel a lot more panicky all of a sudden. We will see hundreds or thousands of new cases as a result of testing increases.
Second: is that panic legitimate? Sort of. This is not the zombie apocalypse. The death rate of 30 deaths per 1000 cases is probably a wild overestimate. (The denominator is almost certainly wrong because it is confirmed cases--and we only confirm cases when we test for them). That said, even at 3 per 1000 cases, this would be a big deal. A very big deal. By way of comparison, the death rate for influenza is between 1 and 2 in 1000 cases. So, yeah. Roughly 0x to 30x worse than a huge global flu pandemic? That's a problem.
Unlike flu, COVID-19 is not *particularly* dangerous for children, so thatâs some happy news. It is dangerous for older adults and those with lung conditions, so we need to be extra careful to protect those populations from exposure.Â
Also, for millions of Americans, getting any serious illness requiring a hospitalization is a major problem because they can't pay for it. And our health care system is probably going to struggle to keep up with it all. And with China basically closed, our global economy is going to take a huge hit and we'll feel the shockwaves for years. Those are real concerns.
What can we do? Our focus should be on *slowing down the spread* of this disease so that we have time to get caught up. Here is my advice:
 1. Wash. Your. Hands. Wash them so much.
The current best guess is that coronavirus is transmitted via close contact and surface contamination. A very small study came out yesterday suggesting that the virus causing COVID-19 is *mostly* transmitted via contact with contaminated surfaces.
I have started washing my hands each time I enter a new building and after being in shared spaces (classrooms especially), in addition to the standard practice of washing after using the bathroom and before eating. Soap and water. Hand sanitizer also kills this virus, as does rubbing alcohol (the main ingredient in hand sanitizer).
There is no need to be obsessive about this. Just wash your hands. A little bit more effort here goes a long way.Â
 2. Donât pick your nose. Or put your fingers in your mouth, on your lips, or in your eyes. Surface contact works like this: you touch something dirty. Maybe it's an elevator button. Virus sticks to your hands. Then you rub your eye. Then you touch your sandwich, and put the sandwich in your mouth. Now there is virus in your eyes and mouth. See?
You may be thinking, but I donât pick my nose because I am an adult! An observational study found that people sitting at a desk working touched their eyes, nose, or lips between 3 and 50 times per hour. Perfectly normal grown-ups, not lowlifes like my friends.
2a. There was one note that came out suggesting that face masks actually promote surface contamination because you're always adjusting them--i.e., touching your face. I donât know if thatâs true. But face masks should not be worn by the public right now, unless you are the person who is sick and you're on your way to or actually at the doctor's office. The maskâs function is to prevent spit from flying out of your mouth and landing on things when you cough or sneeze. It flies out of your mouth and is caught in the mask instead. If you are the person who is sick and not on the way to the doctor, go home. Let the people who really need them have the masks. Like doctors.
[ETA on 3/6/2020 honestly people I am getting so much push back on the mask recommendation!! The world is running low on masks. If everyone wants a mask so they can feel ok about keeping their Daytona Beach Spring Break plans and then hospitals in India can't buy them anymore, shame on us.]
Coronavirus does not appear to be airborne in the sense that doesn't remain floating around freely in the air for a long time, like measles does. You are probably not going to breathe it in, unless someone is coughing in front of you. If someone is coughing in your face, feel free to tell them to get their ass home and move 6 feet away from them. (Yeah I know, if you have a toddler, you're screwed.)
 3. Sanitize the objects you and lots of other people touch, especially people outside your family--like door handles, shared keyboards at schools (brrr), salad bar tongs, etc. Best guesses are that the virus can live on surfaces for 2-48 hours, maybe even longer, depending on the surface, temperature, and humidity.
Many common household cleaning products will kill this virus. However, white vinegar solution does not. You can make your own inexpensive antimicrobial spray by mixing 1 part household bleach to 99 parts cold tap water. Spray this on surfaces and leave for 10-30 minutes. Note: this is bleach. It will ruin your sofa.
 4. "Social distancing." You're going to get so sick of this phrase. This means keeping people apart from one another (preferably 6 feet apart, and sanitizing shared objects). This public health strategy is our next line of defense, and its implementation is what will lead to flights and events cancelled, borders closed, and schools closed.
For now, you could limit face-to-face meetings, especially large ones. Zoom is an excellent videoconferencing option. If you spend time in shared spaces, see #1. Ask your child's school about their hygiene plan, if they haven't already told you what it is. If I were in charge of a school setting, I'd be hand sanitizing the s*** out of the kids' hands, including in and out of each space, and taking temperatures at the door. I am planning to email our school nurse right after this to ask if they need my volunteer help cleaning surfaces.
If you can telecommute, do that a little more. If you are someone's boss and they could do their job remotely, encourage them to do that.Â
Avoid large gatherings of people if at all possible, especially if they are in an area with cases OR places that lots of people travel to. If you attend group events and start to feel even a little bit sick within 2 to 14 days, you need to self isolate immediately. Like for a tiny tickle in your throat.
 5. All your travel plans are about to get screwed up. If you are considering booking flights right now, get refundable tickets. ETA: most trip insurance will not cover cancellations due to a pandemic. Look for "cancel for any reason" trip insurance.Â
Considerations for risks related to that trip youâre planning: how bad would it be if you got stuck where you are going for 3 to 6 weeks? How bad would it be to be isolated at home for 2-3 weeks upon your return? Do you have direct contact with people who are over 70 and/or have lung conditions? If those seem really bad to you, rethink your trip, especially if it is to a location where there are confirmed cases.Â
 6. If you are sick, stay home. Please! For the love of all that is holy. Stay at home. Your contributions to the world are really just not that important.
 7. There is a good chance some communities will see school cancelled and asked to limit non-essential movement. If someone in your family gets sick your family will almost certainly be isolated for 2-3 weeks (asked to stay at home). You could start stocking up with essentials for that scenario, but don't run out and buy a years' worth of toilet paper. Again, not the apocalypse. 2 weeks' worth of essential items. Refill any prescriptions, check your supply of coffee, kitty litter, and jigsaw puzzles.
 8. I do want to remind everyone that when public health works, the result is the least newsworthy thing ever: nothing happens. If this all fizzles out and you start feeling like âWah, all that fuss for nothing??â Then send a thank-you note to your local department of public health for a job well done. Fingers crossed for that outcome.
 9. Look, I think there are some positives here. All this handwashing could stop flu season in its tracks! We have an opportunity to reduce our global carbon footprint by telecommuting more, flying less, and understanding where our stuff comes from. We can use this to think about the problems with our healthcare system. We can use this to reflect on our positions of privilege and implicit biases. We can start greeting each other using jazz hands. I'm genuinely excited about those opportunities.
There is a lot we don't yet know about this virus. It didn't even exist 90 days ago. So stay tuned, it is an evolving situation. The WHO website has a decent FAQ. Free to email or text with questions, and you can forward this to others if you think it's useful.
May the force be with you.Â

P.S. The number one question I am getting is, did you really write this? Yes. I wrote this.Â
I didn't write it for professional purposes, so I didn't put my work email on it. It was really just meant to be an email to my friends and family in advance of what I expect to be an escalation in the panic level. But it was apparently welcome information and went viral on FB. I've decided not to edit out the swears, even though I wrote this with a much smaller audience in mind.Â
Thanks for checking your facts! Go science!Â

8 Ways to Stay Excellent Healthy
Eight healthy behaviors can go a long way toward improving your health and lowering your risk of many cancers as well as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and osteoporosis. And theyâre not as complicated as you might think.
So take control of your health, and encourage your family to do the same. Choose one or two of the behaviors below to start with. Once youâve got those down, move on to the others.
1. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Keeping your weight in check is often easier said than done, but a few simple tips can help. First off, if youâre overweight, focus initially on not gaining any more weight. This by itself can improve your health. Then, when youâre ready, try to take off some extra pounds for an even greater health boost.
Tips
Integrate physical activity and movement into your life.
Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Choose smaller portions and eat more slowly.
For Parents and Grandparents
Limit childrenâs TV and computer time.
Encourage healthy snacking on fruits and vegetables.
Encourage activity during free time.
In this speedy age itâs hard to maintain health and fitness. We need a lot of time, money and expertise. For the same reason the doctors and Physicians are recommending fitness supplements more than ever. These formulae work best if you are recommended the best. Being a nutritionist, I am recommending a Best Weight Loss Supplement For many months. It gives my clients speedy results, satisfaction and stability. Zero side Effects.
Itâs an excellent Fat cutter, energizer, cancer prevention, age restriction, immunity booster and health glower at the same time and in the short time. In maximum 7 weeks you get a slim smart body, shining cheeks, active brain and high level (tested) of immunity. Click Here to see its review.
2. Exercise Regularly
Few things are as good for you as regular physical activity. While it can be hard to find the time, itâs important to fit in at least 30 minutes of activity every day. More is even better, but any amount is better than none.
Tips
Choose activities you enjoy. Many things count as exercise, including walking, gardening and dancing.
Make exercise a habit by setting aside the same time for it each day. Try going to the gym at lunchtime or taking a walk regularly after dinner.
Stay motivated by exercising with someone.
For Parents and Grandparents
Play active games with your kids regularly and go on family walks and bike rides when the weather allows.
Encourage children to play outside (when itâs safe) and to take part in organized activities, including soccer, gymnastics and dancing.
Walk with your kids to school in the morning. Itâs great exercise for everyone.
3. Donât Smoke
Youâve heard it before: If you smoke, quitting is absolutely the best thing you can do for your health. Yes, itâs hard, but itâs also far from impossible. More than 1,000 Americans stop for good every day.
Tips
Keep trying! It often takes six or seven tries before you quit for good.
Talk to a health-care provider for help.
Join a quit-smoking program. Your workplace or health plan may offer one.
For Parents and Grandparents
Try to quit as soon as possible. If you smoke, your children will be more likely to smoke.
Donât smoke in the house or car. If kids breathe in your smoke, they may have a higher risk of breathing problems and lung cancer.
When appropriate, talk to your kids about the dangers of smoking and chewing tobacco. A health-care professional or school counselor can help.
4. Eat a Healthy Diet
Despite confusing news reports, the basics of healthy eating are actually quite straightforward. You should focus on fruits, vegetables and whole grains and keep red meat to a minimum. Itâs also important to cut back on bad fats (saturated and trans fats) and choose healthy fats (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats) more often. Taking a multivitamin with folate every day is a great nutrition insurance policy.
Tips
Make fruits and vegetables a part of every meal. Put fruit on your cereal. Eat vegetables as a snack.
Choose chicken, fish or beans instead of red meat.
Choose whole-grain cereal, brown rice and whole-wheat bread over their more refined counterparts.
Choose dishes made with olive or canola oil, which are high in healthy fats.
Cut back on fast food and store-bought snacks (like cookies), which are high in bad fats.
Buy a 100 percent RDA multivitamin that contains folate.
5. Drink Alcohol Only in Moderation, If at All
Moderate drinking is good for the heart, as many people already know, but it can also increase the risk of cancer. If you donât drink, donât feel that you need to start. If you already drink moderately (less than one drink a day for women, less than two drinks a day for men), thereâs probably no reason to stop. People who drink more, though, should cut back.
Tips
Choose nonalcoholic beverages at meals and parties.
Avoid occasions centered around alcohol.
Talk to a health-care professional if you feel you have a problem with alcohol.
For Parents and Grandparents
Avoid making alcohol an essential part of family gatherings.
When appropriate, discuss the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse with children. A health-care professional or school counselor can help.
6. Protect Yourself from the Sun
While the warm sun is certainly inviting, too much exposure to it can lead to skin cancer, including serious melanoma. Skin damage starts early in childhood, so itâs especially important to protect children.
Tips
Steer clear of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (peak burning hours). Itâs the best way to protect yourself.
Wear hats, long-sleeve shirts and sunscreens with SPF15 or higher.
Donât use sun lamps or tanning booths. Try self-tanning creams instead.
For Parents and Grandparents
Buy tinted sunscreen so you can see if youâve missed any spots on a fidgety child.
Set a good example for children by also protecting yourself with clothing, shade and sunscreen.
7. Protect Yourself From Sexually Transmitted Infections
Among other problems, sexually transmitted infections â like human papillomavirus (HPV) â are linked to a number of different cancers. Protecting yourself from these infections can lower your risk.
Tips
Aside from not having sex, the best protection is to be in a committed, monogamous relationship with someone who does not have a sexually transmitted infection.
For all other situations, be sure to always use a condom and follow other safe-sex practices.
Never rely on your partner to have a condom. Always be prepared.
For Parents and Grandparents
When appropriate, discuss with children the importance of abstinence and safe sex. A health-care professional or school counselor can help.
Vaccinate girls and young women as well as boys and young men against HPV. Talk to a health professional for more information.
8. Get Screening Tests
There are a number of important screening tests that can help protect against cancer. Some of these tests find cancer early when they are most treatable, while others can actually help keep cancer from developing in the first place.
For colorectal cancer alone, regular screening could save over 30,000 lives each year. Thatâs three times the number of people killed by drunk drivers in the United States in all of 2011. Talk to a health care professional about which tests you should have and when.
Cancers that should be tested for regularly:
Colon and rectal cancer
Breast cancer
Cervical cancer
Lung cancer (in current or past heavy smokers)

Episode 34 arrives and itâs a MUCH NEEDED breath of first air. I mean, this episode could have actually BEEN a 99 Adventure episode. I guess at least one person on the production team has actually seen the old show at least once!
In my opinion, it doesnât quite equal the cuteness, silliness, and personality of similar 99 episodes, but it comes very close, and itâs certainly the best weâve had in a long long while.
And itâs all because of these two.
More below!
The episode bizarrely begins with Tailmon barking to communicate with Komondomon. Which raises the question, if no one could talk with Komondomon before because he can only bark, how were they communicating? Did Lopmon just tell Komondomon everything he needed to know and tell the kids âjust follow his leadâ or something??
Also Tailmonâs opening line being her barking is pretty surreal. And yet, fitting for a cat Digimon who is a dog at Child level.
The kids are shown taking a break - the first sign that this episode is gonna be A Bit Different.
Taichi: Something feels weird. Why arenât we fighting?
Sora: Taichi, donât you think you should rest once in a while?
Taichi: I mean, I do, I just got the impression the rest of the world didnât agree...
Sora: By the way, why do we like this world that constantly tries to kill us and never gives us any pleasant memories so much? Why donât we just take our partners to the human world and leave this place to its fate?
Taichi: How else am I gonna get an outlet for my pent up aggression and adrenaline junkie issues?
Sora: Thatâs your backstory?
Taichi: Iâm a complicated man.
Komondomon then randomly jumps... into the sea. âOh no, theyâll drown!â No, they wonât, because Komondomon has the ability to build a dome over his back trapping oxygen inside. Submarimon I get, but Komondomon?
As they dive, Tailmon explains what we learned last week about Millenniumon trying to resurrect himself with a new body. Apparently a very large fragment of him is located undersea in a place called Farga (transliteration TBA). She thinks resentfully about how she was almost absorbed into Millenniumonâs most recent resurrection effort.
Hikari tackles her with a comforting hug, which Tailmon seems a bit discomfited by. But does not object.
Tailmon considers defeating Millenniumon for good to be her personal mission as a Holy Digimon. Patamon sees her determination and does his best to put on his game face too. Itâs like being glared at by a sock puppet.
Tailmon: I canât allow Hikari to be put in danger. Itâs my job as the Holy Digimon -
Tailmon: - gosh darnit and sheâs just so cute too!
They wind up getting hit by a rip current or something?? and thrown into another weird submarine sort of thing. They discourteously break a hole in it and wind up inside a self-sustaining underwater kingdom, apparently, which instantly goes on Red Alert as Manbomon come to attack them.
This is Daipenmon, or Big Penguin Monster. I love him. He is glorious. Gaze upon his expression of perpetually stoned haze.
Daipenmon: You try steering this thing every day in and out nonstop without turning to hard drugs.
She attac!
While fighting, some Mantaraymon break in through the hole they made and the Manbomon go to drive them off as apparently they are not welcome. Then MarineAngemon appears in all her creepy glory and they sort everything out.
MarineAngemon: Oh, Tailmon, I see youâre a Holy Digimon! I can tell by your Holy Ring. I have one too.
Takeru: Patamon, why donât you have a Holy Ring?
Patamon: .... -.-â
Look! See! So cute! They are floating on bubbles! All the kids get their own and each has an individual design that shows their personality. Here Tailmon tries desperately to keep Hikari from falling off. I missed this kind of thing! Flashbacks to Monzaemonâs Toytown...
Turns out MarineAngemon is extremely small and the scene before was all âdonât pay attention to that man behind the curtainâ type scare tactics. Not very effective since no matter how big MarineAngemon gets, sheâs still extremely adorable. She invites them to stay the night. I really expected it to be a trap, but it wasnât.
OH MY GOD IS THAT FOOD ARE THEY EATING ACTUAL FOOD OMG OMG
quick someone alert the producers! Someoneâs having FUN with this show! I was starting to think that was illegal or something!
Itâs not AS fun as when they went to Devimonâs illusory castle in 99 Adventure and stuffed their faces after starving and living on potentially poisonous eggs for a week... but Iâll take it.
Meanwhile an undersea band plays music and Taichi ACTS LIKE THE FIFTH GRADE CHILD THAT HE IS. For about 0.5 seconds but HEY he did something child-like! holy cheez wiz batman!
Hikari is mysteriously absent so Tailmon goes to find her. Turns out sheâs asked MarineAngemon to heal Komondomon who is tired and wounded from their journey. Tailmonâs like, âAw, what a nice person she is.â Iâm all for exceptionally kind-hearted Hikari, but taking care of Komondomon should have been priority 1 for EVERYONE. At least Sora should have thought of it. I can see Taichi being too forward-focused, and Takeru a dumb eight year old, but Sora would definitely have thought about Komondomon.
Clearly the show wanted to establish how nice Hikari is, but I hate when shows inadvertently make all the other characters look like asses just to trump up the current star...
Taichiâs digivice glows and...
... MINI KOUSHIROU RETURNS!!! Hurray!
Um, whatâs that Soraâs drinking? A mimosa? o.O
Well anyway, Koushirou just shows up to remind everyone of the situation with the satellites and that things are getting worse.
Taichi: Do you have any idea what we can do about it?
Koushirou: No, but Iâll keep you posted.
Taichi: Thanks for nothing braindead
Koushirou: Thatâs it! Youâre not the man I knew in episode 3 anymore! I want a divorce!
Taichi: Fine with me itâs not like youâre ever home anyway!
Koushirou: Well at least Iâm not cheating with YAMATO!
Taichi: I HAVE NEEDS!
*cough*
Uh, I know Taichi is shorter than Sora, but he looks... pretty tiny here... lol. Or maybe Soraâs just had a growth spurt again.
They spend the night sleeping in bubbles. Aw.
By the way, question: the kids seem able to walk and breath normally in MarineAngemonâs kingdom... but the fish-type Digimon can also swim around normally. And it seems the kids wouldnât be able to survive in the ocean itself, but they and the fish can both survive here? And yet bubbles? What... what kind of scientific anomaly is this place??
So... MarineAngemonâs kingdom appears to be a Whamonâs corpse! XâD Wow thatâs dark.
They are attacked by Anomalocarimon! For reasons. Actually, they did explain earlier that the ocean Digimon have been more aggressive lately and it seems to be the influence of Millenniumonâs stone in Farga or whatever.
Daipenmon: This sucks I donât have health insurance
Tailmon frantically tries to fight off the intruders while also keeping Hikari out of danger. This entire episode is about Tailmon wanting to protect Hikari and keep her at armâs length so she doesnât end up in danger, while Hikari just keeps trying to stay close to Tailmon and support her.
Tailmon: I canât take you with me, Hikari. Itâs too dangerous.
Hikari: Fine. Big brother, will you bring me into the heat of the action with you?
Taichi: Sure thing.
Tailmon: ...
In his defense, Taichi does seem a bit freaked when Hikari TAKES A FLYING LEAP off MetalGreymon toward Tailmon.
(no I really love that Taichi immediately understands why Hikari wants to fight and takes her right to her partner without even a token ânuu but youâre still a baby.â I mean, if Yamatoâs cool with Takeru being in danger all the time, Taichi shouldnât be much worried about it...
Hikari has a flashback! Turns out sheâs heard Tailmon calling for her since she as a little kid!
She caught one of Angewomonâs feathers back then too.
Hikari promises Tailmon that sheâll be by her side. Awww.
Hands again.
Crest of Light! I kind of expect that weâll find out about the Crests and what they mean really fast at the end of the season... although Iâm still kind of hoping Mimi is mining Crest crystals atm.
Hikari is able to magically produce a Digivice... Iâd completely forgot she didnât have one till now.
Here I expected Tailmon would evolve, but instead, the power of Light appears to give everyone a power boost like itâs done in the past. They all glow with their Crest colors, kids and partners alike (except for some reason Tailmon glows yellow???) and launch a joint attack on Anomalocarimon and defeat him. Yay.
Then they say goodbye to MarineAngemon and go on their way, I guess to Farga.
So... yeah! it was a nice episode. It had a theme. There was fighting, but it didnât overwhelm everything else. There was character development. I really canât complain about it. And it was SHOCKING that Taichi had so few lines (compared to whatâs become the norm - a GOOD shock but still I was like âomg whatâs going on!!â)
I am just confused because why is this sort of episode happening when we havenât seen it in ages? What happened in that interim between when they all met up after the first team split up and just now that prevented the show writers from having fun with the show and just writing nonstop fighting all the time? Iâm so confused. It makes no sense. Still suspecting that they couldnât get anyone to come in and voice characters for long enough so they just focused on Sanpei Yuuko/Taichi, but without the others they couldnât figure out how to push the show forward and make it fun too... Idk. Itâs so weird. But oh well. We got a good episode, and maybe itâs a sign of changes to come. I hope so.
Next week...
We get attacked by a scary looking Digimon and Hikari... Idk, thinks she can block the attack somehow? haha. Aw but look how awesome she is protecting her brother and Greymon!
Hikari gets touched by the dark powers! Oh noes!
And more cuteness.
The episode title name-drops Angewomon, which surprises me because I figured theyâd hold off on her and give Tailmon Nefertimon for an evolution first. But *shrug* whatever! Looking forward to it.

Via Leo d'Entremont :
Gather 'round folks (from a distance, in your own homes). Uncle Leo's gonna break this down.
1. It's not the end of the world, the black plague, or Ebola. It's also not "just a cold." The two extreme ends of the reaction spectrum are wrong. The facts are somewhere in the middle.
2. COVID-19 is less contagious than measles, more contagious than a regular cold, more deadly than the flu, and less deadly than Ebola. The COMBINATION of how contagious and how deadly it is makes it particularly risky and is the perfect combination for spreading everywhere and causing maximum damage.
3. We're having localized areas where the death rate spikes as high as 6%. There are two variants of the virus, different mutations. And more mutated variations are possible. The closest viral relative of COVID-19 is SARS.
4. We don't know how long people can be contagious/infectious before symptoms appear and after symptoms are gone. I've seen articles saying there's evidence (can't find them now) of the contagious period ranging from two to five weeks after symptoms are over. You need to act like you're still contagious even after you recover. And young people often have almost no symptoms but are still contagious. That's going to spread this like crazy.
5. I don't want to hear any shit about "it only kills sick/old people." Bullshit. First of all, I guarantee that you all care about someone who is over the age of 60 or who has underlying health problems. Do you think their life doesn't matter? And second of all, young/healthy people HAVE died.
6. Just because you survive doesn't mean there aren't long-term health consequences if you had a bad case.
7. Here's how it kills: Overwhelming lung damage. We're seeing data suggesting that an immune response called a "cytokine storm" is linked to the worst outcomes for this virus. The lungs fill with fluid. People need to be on ventilators, or in the worst scenarios, ECMO. It's NOT GOOD. It's not just a cold.
8. If this pandemic spreads too aggressively, it will completely overwhelm our medical system. Just look at Italy, a developed nation with a decent health care system. They're overwhelmed. This could be ANYWHERE. Slowing down the spread of the virus will be critical to giving our health care system a fighting chance.
9. The US health care system SUCKS. People are going to go bankrupt because of this virus. People will lose their homes because of this virus. We have a shit safety net, and we're going to see just how bad that's going to be.
10. If you have mild cold symptoms, self-quarantine. Wear a mask if you must go out. Wash your hands. Have your friends deliver groceries without making physical contact with you.
If you have moderate cold symptoms, self-quarantine. Wear a mask if you must go out. Wash your hands. Have your friends deliver groceries without making physical contact with you.
If you start having a sky-high fever and trouble breathing, get your ass to an Emergency Room ASAP.
11. If your employer won't be reasonable, THIS is the time for public shaming of the employer. For real. I encourage this. Public pressure and shame might be the only thing that keeps things from spreading faster.
12. Anyone pushing bullshit cures is fucking CANCELLED. Essential oils, high-dose vitamins, and other quackery won't do shit for preventing or treating this virus. If I see you spreading that bullshit, I will come down on you like an anvil on a Loony Tunes character.
13. Some things that WILL kill the virus on surfaces: - Soap - Bleach - Lysol - Detergent
14. Things that will kill the virus on humans: - Soap and water. - Hand sanitizer.
15. Reasonable precautions: - WASH YOUR HANDS. - Don't touch other people. - Don't touch your face when out in public, and wash your hands when you get home. - Use your elbows to hit buttons on elevators and turn light switches. Then wash your elbows. - Wear a mask if you're sick, if you're treating someone who is sick, or if you're visiting a medical facility. - Stay at least a full body length away from people. - Work under the assumption that all doorknobs and public surfaces are contaminated. Sanitize surfaces.
NOW... Let's take a moment to talk about cancellations. Tons of things are being cancelled "at the last minute," and some of y'all are upset. I get that. But it's not always simple. Things are planned WAY in advance, and there are contracts that must be followed. The only way to get out of those contracts without HUGE financial penalties is if there is a DECLARED state of emergency in a city, town, county, state, or nation where the event is taking place. Then, the insurance kicks in, and you can cancel the contract. But if you just decide to cancel "out of an abundance of caution," you could bankrupt your whole organization and there won't be a next year for your favorite convention. I'm sorry, but pandemics work on their own schedule, and our convenience isn't a consideration.
I have spoken.
Now, go wash yer hands, ya filthy animals. Love y'all.

TSA boss doubles down on taking away health care from part-time screeners (permalink)
TSA agents handles the personal belongings and touch the bodies of millions of fliers. Part time agents don't get health-insurance. If they think they might have Covid-19, they might not be able to afford to seek care.

TSA chief David Pekoske told Congress that the Trump administration's decision to take away health-care from part time TSA employees was a good one: "I have no intention of restoring health care coverage for part-time workers. I think that was a good decision."
About 100 TSA agents have been sent home after it was believed they came into contact with Covid-19. The TSA will not try to track down passengers who also might have come into contact with sick people.

A former top Cigna exec rebuts Joe Biden's healthcare FUD (permalink)
In a recent and important essay, Maria Farrell wrote about the road-to-Damascus conversions that ex-techies are having in which they recant the damaging product design work they did and begin to campaign against their former employers.
https://conversationalist.org/2020/03/05/the-prodigal-techbro/
Farrell noted that these techies had missed an important step in their transformation from venal attention mercenaries to noble attention freedom-fighters: they had yet to hit bottom, to truly repent their earlier sins.
They skipped like stones over the waters of privilege, and never sank, unlike so many of their victims.
Contrast those journeys with that of Wendell Potter, the former Cigna exec turned whistleblower, who has devoted decades of his life to revealing dirty tricks and lies. Potter campaigns tirelessly â and shrewdly â for Medicare for All, and is always at pains to point out that the anti-M4A talking points his adversaries parrots were all developed by him, when he was on the wrong side of history.
Take this thread, rebutting Joe Biden's FUD about M4A, delivered in the midst of a pandemic that has been worsened by the 77 million un- and underinsured people who can't get care or screening and disproportionately work in food-service and cleaning.
https://twitter.com/wendellpotter/status/1237438497218105344
As Potter points out, Biden's assertion that M4A costs $35T is just a lie. Once you factor in the savings of not paying for private healthcare, M4A SAVES at least $450B/year.
https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(19)33019-3/fulltext
Biden's plan to cap premiums on a public option at 8.5% of your income is more than double what M4A would cost you. The corporate plans Biden lionizes shackle good workers to bad employers, and put millions at risk of having their care arbitrarily withdrawn or limited. And, of course, private care doesn't cover much. Surprise bills, deductibles, co-pays, out-of-pockets⊠Our plan â a blue-chip employer's top-of-the-line Cigna plan â costs us $24K/year.
We're rationing our family's health care because in addition to the $20K/year we're paying out of pocket, Cigna refused to cover a pain procedure that my doc â the most-cited pain doc working in California, who runs a major university pain clinic â says I would benefit from. That procedure might let me get a good night's sleep for the first time in 15 years and allow me to live a more normal, pain-free life. But because Cigna won't cover it, it would cost $55K, which we do not have. So I'm foregoing it.
Ars Technica's Covid-19 explainer is the best resource on the pandemic (permalink)
I've been reading Beth Mole's outstanding science journalism for many years and I've always admired it, but even by the high standards of a Beth Mole explainer, this soup-to-nuts Covid-19 explainer is just spectacularly good work.
https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/03/dont-panic-the-comprehensive-ars-technica-guide-to-the-coronavirus/
Mole's calm and comprehensive coverage relies on the most reliable sources and turns the results of our best evidence-based studies into a coherent narrative, from the disease's origins to its spread to its symptoms to its resolution.
Just this symptom-by-symptom breakdown was enormously informative and filled in a huge gap that I had previously mentally signposted as "flu-like".
According to data from nearly 56,000 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients in China, the rundown of common symptoms went as follows:
88 percent had a fever
68 percent had a dry cough
38 percent had fatigue
33 percent coughed up phlegm
19 percent had shortness of breath
15 percent had joint or muscle pain
14 percent had a sore throat
14 percent headache
11 percent had chills
5 percent had nausea or vomiting
5 percent had nasal congestion
4 percent had diarrhea
Less than one percent coughed up blood or blood-stained mucus
Less than one percent had watery eyes
The sections on transmission, self-protection, and care during a social distancing lockdown or quarantine are likewise levelheaded, clear and informative.
This is a tab you should just keep open in your browser, IOW. Mole's updating frequently, too.
Boeing is even worse at financial engineering than they are at aircraft engineering (permalink)
Boeing is experiencing a potentially terminal slump. Between losses due to its 737 Max scandal (a self-inflicted injury), and the dropoff in travel during the pandemic, it has had to draw down its entire line of credit and institute a hiring freeze.
https://wolfstreet.com/2020/03/11/boeing-crashes-as-43-billion-in-past-share-buybacks-turn-into-existential-threat
Obviously, Boeing can't be blamed for the pandemic.
But you know what is absolutely the company's fault? Its financial engineering.
Since 2013, Boeing squandered $43 billion on stock buybacks, whose sole purpose was to goose its share-price.
As Wolf Richter writes, Boeing, this "master of financial engineering â instead of aircraft engineering â blew, wasted, and incinerated $43.4 billion on buying back its own shares."
The company just had to borrow $13.825B. Its shares are down 46% since March 2019.
The entire company â a jewel of American industry â might not survive, because it focused on short-term enrichment of shareholders, rather than safe aircraft or financial prudence.
Reality has a well-known anti-capitalist bias, part MMMLVII.
Senate Republicans kill emergency sick leave during pandemic (permalink)
Senate Republicans have killed emergency sick leave legislation, a move that will force millions of low-waged cleaning and food-service workers to choose between homelessness and potentially spreading Covid-19.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/coronavirus-paid-sick-leave-us-republicans-block-senate-bill-new-york-washington-a9395821.htm
The GOP says that paid sick leave will endanger the fragile bottom lines of employers and also that the feds have no money to pay for such a thing â despite finding it easy to blow $2.3 trillion on tax-cuts for the super-rich.
https://www.politico.com/story/2018/02/28/tax-cuts-trump-gop-analysis-430781
They also found $20 BILLION in the senate's sofa cushions to give to the Pentagon, an agency whose auditor found more than a trillion dollars in off-the-books transactions in its financial records.
https://www.defensenews.com/congress/2019/12/19/pentagon-finally-gets-its-2020-budget-from-congress/
Refusing to help poor Americans stay fed and sheltered isn't just cruel, it's lethally reckless, and it demonstrates the moral hazard of oligarchic capitalism. Subsidizing sick-leave would merely afford survival to millions of Americans, after all.
Whereas the crisis that this will produce â a pandemic that is made worse and longer â will cost billions more, but that money will go to the donor-class, the Beltway Bandits whose cost-plus, no-bid contracts will transfer even more money from the poor to the wealthy.
It's disaster capitalism at its worst. The Senate GOP is dooming you and everyone you love to the risk of disease and death because preventing that risk would help millions of poor people, whereas creating the risk helps a handful of ultrarich people.
The EU's new Right to Repair rules finally come for electronics (permalink)
The EU Commission's latest "Circular Economy Action Plan" has enormous significance for Right to Repair and electronics.
https://ec.europa.eu/environment/circular-economy/pdf/new_circular_economy_action_plan.pdf
In addition to a host of eminently sensible, long overdue measures (bans on single use items and the destruction of unsold goods), there's a renewed emphasis on electronics, through the "Circular Electronics Initiative".
https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/11/european-lawmakers-propose-a-right-to-repair-for-mobiles-and-laptops/
The initiative mandates that components be reusable, repairable, and upgradable, and requires long-term software support to keep IoT devices useful for longer. These mandates â also long overdue â show that the EU is finally willing to ignore the priorities of Apple and other US Big Tech companies in favour of Europeans' rights to the long-term enjoyment of their property and the right not to drown in e-waste).

How to run a virtual classroom (permalink)
For 14 years, Stanford Online High School has been running fully virtual classrooms, with continuous, ongoing improvements in their tech and methods. They've just published a new guide to "the essential steps for preparing to teach online in a short period of time." They're also conducting a series of webinars on the subject.

Currently writing: I'm rewriting a short story, "The Canadian Miracle," for MIT Tech Review. It's a story set in the world of my next novel, "The Lost Cause," a post-GND novel about truth and reconciliation. I'm also working on "Baby Twitter," a piece of design fiction also set in The Lost Cause's prehistory, for a British think-tank. I'm getting geared up to start work on the novel afterwards.
Currently reading: Just started Lauren Beukes's forthcoming Afterland: it's Y the Last Man plus plus, and two chapters in, it's amazeballs. Last month, I finished Andrea Bernstein's "American Oligarchs"; it's a magnificent history of the Kushner and Trump families, showing how they cheated, stole and lied their way into power. I'm getting really into Anna Weiner's memoir about tech, "Uncanny Valley." I just loaded Matt Stoller's "Goliath" onto my underwater MP3 player and I'm listening to it as I swim laps.

Happy Birthday to the real Amyntor: Ed Reames
9/11 is a day of mourning in the US. But for me, 9/11 means my fatherâs birthday. And with Dancing with the Lion: Rise coming out next month--which is dedicated to my fatherâs memory--I decided Iâd post here the tribute to my father that I wrote shortly after his death in February of 2017. My father (and mother) provided the model for Amyntor in the novel. So if youâd like to meet the ârealâ Amyntor, here he is.
Calvin Edward Reames, c. 1944
As some of you are already aware, my fatherâs healthâphysical and mentalâhas been failing, especially since autumn. In late January, he caught pneumonia and was admitted to the hospital. He never regained conscious awareness and was placed on palliative care. At 3:15pm, Eastern time, February 10, 2017, he died, almost exactly 92 years and 5 months since he entered this world.
Social media has become the communication currency of our time, and supposedly nothing on the Internet ever really disappears. Ergo I want to tell you about my father so HE wonât disappear. This is my own reflection. Â No oneâs life can be understood by any single individual in it. Weâre too multifaceted. The father I knew wasn't even the father my brother knew, as we were born almost 18 years apart--he at the beginning of the Baby Boom and me at the tail end. Yet my father raised a writer for a daughter, so I feel the need to eulogize him as I knew him. Others will have other stories, more or less flattering.
Born on the now-infamous date of 9/11, 1924, in Gorham, Jackson County, (Southern) Illinois, he survived the Tri-State Tornado at only 6 months of age. With him in her arms, his mother ran for the railroad tracks and got on the opposite side from the mile-wide monster bearing down on them, then laid her own body over his; the tornado leapt the tracks and spared them. Perhaps that was an omen for a charmed life. On the face of if, his life might not seem particularly charmed, but he survived the Depression, a world war, and mostly made good on the American Dream. He even lived long enough to see his Cubbies win the World Series.
Iva Mae Gregersen Reames & Daddy, 1925
The eldest of 13 children, he grew up in a family who were poor even by Depression-era standards.  It made him generous, occasionally foolishly so. Yet if he decided someone was âhisâ (family or friend), he saw it as his obligation to help. That conviction stemmed less from abstract ethics than from an innate kindness arising out of his recall of what it meant to be in need. Sometimes people say, âWell, I managed âŠâ and expect others to suffer as they had.  Daddy could do that, too, but mostly he didn't.  If he could prevent someone from suffering, that made him happy.  He just wanted a âThank you.â When he was in the war, he sent virtually his whole paycheque home to his mother each month to help care for his younger brothers and sisters. He kept $5.  Yes, $5 went much further then, but as an unmarried corporal in the US army, he made about $65 dollars monthly in 1944.  So he kept 1/13th of his income and gave away the rest.
US Army Corporal, 126th AAA Battalion, 1943
That, perhaps better than anything, exemplifies his fundamental nature. Itâs in our actions and choices that, I believe, we reveal our true selves.
He liked to laugh, and kid, but never cruelly. For some families, a disparaging jest is meant as back-handed affection, but that wasnât heard in the house in which I grew up. When I was younger, I was frequently teased because I walked right into comments with potential double meanings. Perhaps one of the values of getting old(er) is that Iâve aged out of being an easy target. Yet I never learned to hear what others said as an opportunity for ribbing because my parents didnât find that sort of thing funny. My father's sense of humor was devoid of sarcasm, as he thought it mean-spirited. Some of that owed to his own mother, whoâto hear him talk about herâshould have been beatified immediately upon her death. But I also believe it owed to having lived through real struggle himself.
To his mind, the world is mean enough. He saw no need to make it meaner via our interactions with people about whom we should care. It's partly for that reason, and a basic aversion to drama, that he was a much-desired member of the pastor-parish relations committee at our church in Lakeland, Florida. His presence tended to tamp down exaggerated crises and occasional bouts of flailing (which is actually a bit funny, given his own tendency to worry).
My father had a will of iron, and a quiet ambition easily overlooked. For instance, when he decided to stop smoking, back before I was born, heâd just received a new carton of cigarettes for Christmas. He threw them in the trash and quit cold turkey because heâd decided he was done. He took up a pipe later (I think largely for image), but decided he didnât want to do that, either, and just put down the pipe one day. That was it.
"The Lineman," Normal Rockwell
When Daddy decided to do something, he did it. âFailure is not an optionïżœïżœ: Apollo 13âs motto. Well, the men (and women) who got Apollo 13 home are my fatherâs generation. When he returned from the war, he was one of millions looking for a job. He tried on several, but finally decided to work for the telephone company because communications seemed like the future. Before the war, heâd wanted to be a pharmacist, yet circumstance had curtailed the college degree required. So he began showing up regularly in the hiring offices of General Telephone Electric (GTE), asking for work. He made himself annoying. But squeaky wheel gets the grease, and finally they sent him north as a telephone lineman ⊠in January ⊠during a blizzard. He was a relatively little guy (wiry, but short), and they doubted heâd last 2 days. They figured it was a good way to get rid of his terrier persistence.
Daddy on right, GTE employee award
He persisted for 40+ years, and retired as a (self-taught) senior engineer in the mid-1980s. Never tell a Reames, "You canât do that."
The guys whoâd worked under him at the end liked him so much, they kept coming to visit him for years after. He had that effect on people, whether at work, at church, or as a ham radio operator ("This is K9RWP calling..."). They sensed he truly cared about them, and responded in kind. He wasnât a boisterous or especially outgoing person, but he was still an extrovert. Heâd strike up conversations with random strangers in lines at store check-outs.
Especially if there was a baby involved.
Daddy & his great-granddaughter, Leila
See, Daddy loved babies. Â And babies loved Daddy. Maybe as a result of being the eldest of 13, but he could burp them, change a diaper pronto, or make them laugh. He so enjoyed watching little kids, especially as he aged; heâd break into a grin just to see them playing at a distance. He was never among the âChildren should be seen and not heardâ crowd. To his mind, children should be talked to and played with. They would inherit the earth. When my son was born just a few months after my mother's death, Daddy said, âHeâs my little replacement.â At the time, I worried his words were fatalistic. But he went on to survive my mother by almost 20 years, and now, I see his words as an expression of continuity. We are our ancestors.
Daddy, Grandson Ian & Licorice as a kitten
So my son, Ian, is his replacement, in the larger sense. When we look forward, we also look back to where we came from. I tried to insure that Ian got to know his Grandpa, who was there just days after he came home from the hospital after birth, and was there when he graduated from high school, even paid his first bill for books at college. Because thatâs who Daddy was. If he didnât get to attend college himself, he made sure both his kids did, and his grandkids. For him, that was an achievement.
As I saidâŠthe success of others, especially friends and family, seemed to Daddy the same as his own.
Yet his generosity and empathy extended beyond just people. Daddy was a cat magnet. We used to joke that if he sat down and there was a cat within 50 feet, pretty soon, that cat would be on his lap. He liked dogs, to be sure, but dogs (and horses) were my motherâs favorites. Daddy liked cats, and they liked him. Dogs are forgiving. Theyâll stay with even an abusive owner; but cats leave. They donât put up with crap. Daddy? Even semi-feral cats trusted him.
Daddy, me, Ian, and a completely random barn cat who decided to adopt him for the day at my auntâs farm
So while he was raised in a time when animals were tools and food more than family members, and he certainly went hunting from a young age to help put food on the table, I think he, more than my mother, had a soft spot for animals. I remember in the â70s, he decided we were going to raise rabbits for food, and bought a pair of does. Well, it didnât take long for yours truly to make pets not only of the does, but of the first litter of babies. All of them had to go to homes where theyâd be pets, not dinner. And while Iâd made the pronouncement, it didnât take much to convince my father. Shooting a wild squirrel for the stew pot (especially when hungry) was one thing; killing the rabbits one fed regularly and took care of was another. So our venture in home-grown meat failed miserably (to, Iâm sure, the rabbitsâ collective relief). Yet it wasnât just due to my agitating. I donât think Daddy could have killed a one of them, even if I hadnât protested. They had names, after all.
He wasnât a saint. None of us are. The cliche applies: we're a mix of vices and virtues, like shadows against the backlight of the sun. Age softened some of his, while exacerbating others due to a failing filter. Among other things he did well, Daddy was a champion worrier. He worried about anything you can imagine (and then some). Perhaps that owed to growing up in such an unstable era as the Depression when it seemed anything could happen, but for instance, he would remind me constantly to hold onto handrails while going up and down stairs. It seems trivial, but he genuinely angsted over me falling at home and hurting myself when nobody might find me for days. So I (mostly) hold onto rails, because I hear his voice in my head, telling me to.
The irony, of course, is that he was in much more danger of falling, yet he didn't tend to worry about himself. Before he moved up to be near my brother, I tried to get him to buy one of those Life Alert systems. I even employed the ultimate weapon: his grandson (Ian), to beg. Â He refused. Heâd be fine, because heâs of that generation when all a man should need was himself, a gun, a good job, and a driver's license. And oh, boy, getting him to relinquish that driver's license as he went increasingly blind from macular degeneration was quite the battle, one my poor brother largely had to face when Daddy moved north to Kentucky in his last years. Daddy never did let go of the worrying, though.
He could be impatient, and critical, too, sometimes overly so. I never wanted to sing in front of him because he, like many of his siblings, had an excellent ear and I was, well, usually a little flat. He could hear it, and would say so. But the one he was most critical of was himself, if he failed to live up to his (very high) standards of what he thought he ought to do. Some of that, I lay at the feet of his own father, at least as my mother told it to me. Yet in contrast, as noted earlier, he delighted in the success of others. As a child and young woman I wanted to succeed not because I feared his critique (except about my singing), but because I basked in his happiness when I did well. He could be downright embarrassing in his bragging. If failure, especially his, was not an option, he didn't feel the need to build himself up by tearing down others. He was happy to share the spotlight, or even to applaud from the sidelines--and mean it. Again, maybe that owed to being one of 13, but I think it went deeper, back to his fundamental worldview: âYou and me,â not, âMe or you.â He was quietly ambitious, but not especially competitive. Except at cards. Then all bets were off (sometimes literally).
Daddy with Mama, Christmas, c. 1990
One of his most outstanding virtues was his loyalty. For instance, he fell in love with my mother and stayed married to her for 51 years, then never remarried. While it might have been nice for him to remarry, I don't think it was in him; it would have felt like "replacing" her, and to his mind, she had no replacement.
After her death in 1997, I recall going through old pictures of her with him, one from just after the war, which showed them out with friends. Keep in mind that my mother, from childhood until after the birth of my brother, wasâŠpudgy. While on the shorter side, my father was never heavy in his youth. In fact, he got quite buff during WWII: broad-chested and slim-waisted. But as we looked at that picture of my mother next to her friends, he pointed to her with tears in his eyes, and said, "She was the most beautiful of them all." Yup, the "pudgy" girl.
Idalee Brouillette, c. 1944, the picture my father carried during WWII
But he was right: Mama was a stunner. I know that, now, people say I look a lot like her, and Iâm honored itâs so. But I was never as pretty as she was, especially in her youth, and I think my father felt bedazzled that this beautiful, black-haired Brouillette girl decided she was going to marry him, and that was the end of it. Her family was better off financially during the Depression, even with Indian blood; they had a farm with a full section, and a car, and enough money for my grandfather to send my mother and her sisters into town to go to school when he thought the teacher at the school on Buttermilk Hill was unqualified. So I suppose you could say Daddy "married up." But to Mamaâs mind, sheâd won the deal, getting the determined, smart guy.
See, long before they met in person, Mama had gone with her best friend Annie to Gorham High School for a day, visiting. In math class, the teacher put a problem on the board and asked the class to solve it. Only one student could: my father. He got up and wrote the solution on the blackboard, and Mama was enchanted. She asked Annie, âWho is that guy!?â
Some years later, she married that guy.
March 8th, 1946, wedding picture
In many ways, my parents were quite different people. My mother was progressive in thought beyond her time, naturally empathic and perceptive, a bookworm introvert with a steel spine when she needed it and the amazing ability to keep 5+ peopleâs business in her head without forgetting anything. Everything I know about organization (and Iâm pretty good at it), I learned from my mother. My father was conservative, protective, supportive, more intelligent (in sheer IQ), but less emotionally intelligent (EQ), more driven, but less philosophical. Yet they created a unique alchemy of spirit. They didnât share common interestsâMama loved reading novels, Daddy never read fiction, Mama loved watching murder mysteries, Daddy preferred ball games or the news. Yet they looked out on the world in the same direction, and thatâs what mattered.
Ed Reames in high school
In the end, what can I say but that Daddy was the epitome of the Greatest Generation. And now heâs gone. I wonât say weâll never see their like again, because nobody knows the future. They werenât perfectâracism was an institutionalized assumption enshrined in segregation, women barely had the vote, LGBTQ wasnât even talked aboutâbut we, in our current America, could take a page from those who survived abject poverty and economic collapse without government safety nets, then went on to save the world from fascism. They did it not by grand deeds, but by the simple heroism of young men and a few women storming a beach at Normandy or Iwo Jima, a lot of whom never came home. Daddy used to joke that he chased Hitler all over Europe but never caught him.
Daddy, you did catch him. You were part of the men and women who stopped him.
You are my hero. Â You are the real Captain America.
Iâm privileged and grateful to be your daughter, and I love you, forever.

Reasons I hate Fat Donnie Trump (will update frequently)
#Republican, duh. #Narcissistic Personality Order #He lost the Popular vote. #No previous political experience #Has unrealistic ideas about how to solve America's problems, such as getting Mexico to pay for a wall to keep illegal immigrants out. #Vice President is a crazy fundamentalist Christian homophobic wackjob who thinks electroshock therapy cures homosexuality and can't be alone with a woman without his wife present. #Believes in unscientific ideas such as the idea that vaccines cause autism (I am autistic so this is a bit personal) #Has made comments alluding to sexual harassment. #Can't let any slight go. Even comments made about his sign. Jeez, Obama simply shrugged off the trolls and haters. #Won't stop bitch-tweeting. #Enacted the separation of children from their parents. #Tried to ban trans folks from the military. As long as they serve our country, who cares? #Suspended CNN's press pass after some tough questioning. #Is imposing insanely high tariffs on imported goods, mostly from China. #Supports unconstitutional profiling of Muslims. #Supports killing civilians in war. âWe gotta take our their familiesâ WHO THINKS LIKE THIS? #Posted troops on the border just for political advantage in the 2018 mid-terms. #Is a shameless self-promoter. #Can't admit his own faults. #Believes he's qualified for president because he's rich (said this in 2013) #Has passed insane tax cuts for the rich, which only increase America's budget deficit and national debt. TRICKLE-DOWN NEVER WORKS. #Had to be discouraged from invading Venezuela, who hasn't done anything to us and poses no threat to us. #Gets advice from Fox News. #Pulled out the Iran deal which was working. #Thinks that the way to show strength is by being a dick. #Cheated on every one of his wives and lied about it. We impeached Bill Clinton for it. #Has increased the military budget way too much. We spend $664 BILLION on the military. It doesn't need anymore. #Claimed Obama spied on him by wiretapping the Trump towers. Provided no evidence. #When he is criticized for something, he claims âObama started it...â *facepalm* #LIES ON A CONSTANT BASIS. I think he lies just to see what his fans will believe... #He won't admit he lost the popular vote. He says "If you deduct the illegal voters." Oh please... #Is undoing everything Obama did just because it was Obama that did it. If he could bring back Osama bin Laden, he would. #WORLD LEADERS ARE LAUGHING AT HIM AND US #He has his cabinet kiss his ass on a constant basis. #He committed campaign finance violations during the election. #He fired FBI Director Jimmy the Giant Comey just because he wouldn't swear loyalty to him and was investigating him. (Edit: He called for an end to investigations like Tricky Dick did in â74) #3.2 MILLION Americans lost their health insurance in Trump's first year. #"A terror attack would help me politically bigly." or we could NOT have a terrorist attack, thank you. #Claimed he would've run into a school shooting to confront the shooter without a weapon. BULLSHIT. #His lawyers say "I can't let him testify because he can't stop lying." #His budget obliterated funding for Science, Education, EPA & labor. #He encourages Republicans to break the law. #Tweeted FAKE photos to convince his fans that the border wall is being built. #Has committed obstruction of justice. Sean Hannity is a partisan hack who wouldn't turn on a Republican president even if he found out he was using JFK's Eternal Flame to light farts. Heâs so far up Trumpâs ass he can taste his lunch. #He still uses his private NON-SECURE cell phone, creating HUGE National Security problems. #He admitted his attacks on the media are just to discredit negative stories. #He claims he has the power to pardon himself. NO THE HELL HE DOESN'T. #Giuliani said Trump can't testify because his memory keeps changing. #THE MOST THIN-SKINNED PRESIDENT. #He is against the protections for pre-existing conditions. HE is a pre-existing condition. #When told Kim Jong-Un is a murderer, he responded "He's a tough guy." #He says Americans should obey him like North Koreans are forced at gunpoint to obey Kim Jong-un. #He trusts brutal dictators, but not our closest allies. #He is jealous of Kim Jong-Un's absolute grip on power. #He lied about the German crime rate to justify his immigration policies. #He suggested destroying the Constitution so he can deport immigrants faster. #Authorized USING LETHAL FORCE ON UNARMED MIGRANTS!!! #Lied to the United Nations, saying poverty in America doesn't actually exist. I PERSONALLY know people who are living in poverty. #He issued a gag order to stop government employees from talking to reporters. #He said, on tape, that if Senator Elizabeth Warren proved she was Native American, he would donate $1 million to a charity of her choice. When she did, and someone pointed it out, he said "I didn't say that." Whether or not heâs obligated to pay, he said he would but now heâs saying he didnât say it. #Says people who criticize him are a threat to America. #His trade wars have cost 100,000+ American jobs. #People who work for him tend to be convicted of crimes... #Makes slanderous lies about us Democrats. #Told German Chancellor she owes him $1 Trillion even though she doesn't him shit. #76% of the claims Trump makes during his rallies are LIES. #He has committed at least NINE impeachable offenses. #He said he believes Russian president Vladimir Putin over OUR OWN intelligence agencies. #He once said in December 2016, "Fuck the law! Biohazards Lore
This is a summary of the first arc of my S/i lore. I hope you all enjoy.
Reynolds Arc
Warning: Violence, Child abuse, Suicide, Political corruption, Nazism
Robert Reynolds, Head of Spring Hill Medical, as well as the top contender of all health insurances, wants to be prepared for the next generation when he dies. So he decides to have his child carry on his goals and family name. His first child, Phil, Didnât meet his standards and tries again. His next, Wendy, was pushed aside as he tried one more time. His last child, Jason, Was perfect. He looked exactly like him. Throughout the years, His children were given strict rules and given harsh punishments if they disobeyed. Dogma sank into their minds to think Robert was the greatest father they could ever ask for despite being abused.
Phil was given a role to enforce the family if they so broke any rules. Having a lot of respect for his father, he obeyed the order. He was often told many times that he will never amount to much as his younger brother, Jason. Jealousy and rage overtook him, causing him to abuse and bully Jason. Wendy was heavily neglected.
Robert didnât care much for her. Self-hatred embarked her because she came to terms that her father will never love her. The only thing she can do to please her father was nurture Jason and make sure he followed her father's wishes.
Jason was given strict terms and ambitions that he had to follow. Robert wanted Jason to take over the business of Spring Hill and carry on the goals of Daniel Bachmann. He was forced to study medicine, economics, and business. Something that Jason could never understand. In fact, the more he learned about The business practices of Spring Hill, the more he hated it. He sometimes wishes there was a way it could be destroyed. But he could never tell his father, or there will be hell to pay. He used to read superhero comic books and wants to be just like them. Saving people from oppression, not for fame or money, but because itâs the right thing to do. Robert confiscated his comics and tells him to start focusing on the real world.
Sasha lived in Russia with her grandfather. She is in a religion that could predict apocalypses called the Beckoning. Â Many of the members say the world will end millions of years from now. But Sasha gets a vision that the world will end in couple years, she calls the timer the reckoning clock. People didnât believe her and tell she is too young to have the ability fully developed. She then prepares for the reckoning. She prays and gets a vision. âTHERE ARE FOUR BRINGERS OF THE END OF THE WORLD. THE FALSE PROPHET, THE WARBRINGER, THE DECEIVER AND THE ANGEL OF DEATHâ
Jason is now 13. Robert feels like Wendyâs care and compassion is making Jason weak. He decides to plan an assassination for her. Wendy hears about this and ends up hanging herself in her room. Jason later finds her hanging corpse and is absolutely distraught by it. At that moment, he realizes that she didnât commit suicide. His father forced her to kill herself. Heâs a murderer and he needs to be stopped. Robert is a monster, he can never find the good in him again.
Robert sends Jason on a field to cheer him up. He sends him to Guido Sharpâs Air Force base in Palm Springs. He also sends his wife to be the tour guide since Sharp had business with Bachmann. During the tour, Jason finds an atomic bomb, filled with âMaroon Elixirâ. Jason knows about his fatherâs friendâs plan for world power. He thinks back at the comics he used to read. At that moment, he knew what to do. He had to sacrifice himself to decline Bachmannâs chance for domination. Jason goes to bomb to detonate it. Everyone in the vicinity tries to stop him, but itâs too late. The bomb explodes, killing everyone and destroying the entire base.
Sasha (also 13) suddenly gets a vision. The reckoning clock changed from one week to five years. She prays to find the meaning of the change. âDESTINY HAS BEEN DESTROYED AND A NEW ONE TOOK ITS PLACE. THIS DISTURBANCE IS THE FAULT BY A MAN WHO IS A DESCENDANT OF THE ANGEL OF DEATH.â Given a clue, Sasha decides that this man is the answer to change the clock to infinity. Sasha travels to California to search for this descendant.
The next day, Jason wakes up. He finds out heâs the only one alive. Maroon vapors were flowing from his hands. He then learns he can manipulate poison, form into poison. The poison is lethal when he accidentally shot a ball of poison at a scoutâs face. The scout vomited maroon liquid and died instantly. Axl escapes the ruined base, fleeing from the scouts.
Jason takes a breather at a nearby underpass. He takes a moment to think about his future. He finalizes his goals by dropping âJason Reynoldsâ to âAxl Crashâ and strive to stop Bachmann and Robertâs plans. He spends half a year living on the streets and training with his newfound powers. He hides his face to avoid being noticed by Reynoldâs men.
Robert and Guido receive information about the explosion and the deaths of Hollie and Jason. They also receive news of scouts finding a hooded figure attacking his men and fleeing the scene. They both decide to place a hit on this man, believing he is the cause of the explosion.
A protest on the streets of Orange turned into a riot. Sharpâs men broke out and started attacked anyone that catches their eye, believing they are part of the riot. This included Sasha who ran into an alley. He is saved by a man wielding a revolver. They flee and hid in an abandoned apartment building. The man introduces himself, calling him Miles King. Miles gets a phone call despite his phone plan being canceled. The caller calls himself â4NR-KEYâ and tells them to go to the rooftops, the FMC (Freedom Military Corps) Â is heading to their position. They comply and head to the rooftops and are picked up by a helicopter.
The pilot says his name is Zack Anarchy and he needs Milesâ help to take down the Freedom Military Corps. Miles agrees to join but says he is focused on Gregory Clowe for spreading causing the death of his parents. Sasha hears this and names them THE BRINGER OF WAR, AND THE DECEIVER and asks to join. They form a team right before the helicopter get struck with a missile.
All three survive the crash but are surrounded by the FMC. The commander of the fleet meets them and commands his men to shoot them. But before they pull the trigger, Axl appears and kills all of them, including the commander. The 3 have never seen powers like Axlâs before, Zack asks Axl to join his ranks and his war against Sharp. Axl agrees, but only because he has affiliations with Reynolds.
Zack takes them to a mall called âProdigy Mallâ. A mall that has been abandoned for years, and where Zack has been residing. The four talk about their lives and why they are against these people they mentioned.
Sharp has been known to have a domestic military to keep strict order on the citizens. Zachary was an escaped prisoner. He was locked up because he tried to expose Sharpâs future goals by breaking into their base and hacking their servers. He got the information but was eventually captured. How they treated their prisoners was torturous and humiliating. They even killed prisoners in front of them to show order. He compared it to prison camps of the Holocaust, which makes sense when Zachary told them Sharp used to be a Nazi-apologist.
Miles shares how Clowe is in charge of all media news outlets and has been sharing false news and yellow journalism. Milesâ Father used to work for Clowe. His father refused to publish an article demeaning foreign Americans and instead published a work exposing Clowes practices. He was instantly fired and the news outlets demonized him and his family. The hate of the people grew and he was eventually run out of town and hunted down my guerrilla assassins. His family was taken away, but he escaped. He assumed they were dead. The last words he heard from his father was âI donât want you to worry about me anymore. I want you to worry about Gregory Clowe.â That is why he wants revenge on Clowe.
Axl then tells his side of the story.
Sasha mentions that all the people mention are 3 of the 4 men that would bring upon the reckoning. She also explains the Reckoning Clock. She asks her new friends to help. They all agree and form an organization called âThe Biohazardsâ. Everyone voted Miles to be the leader. Sasha was given the title âSageâ because of her power to predict the reckoning clock. She also became the team interior designer for the mall. Zack became the techie of the group. With the ability to hack and tinker. Axl became the mercenary due to the fact he has supernatural powers.
They decided to renovate the mall since Sasha has experience in architect. They completely transformed a department store to make it a training gym. Refurbished the food court so it was a clean place to eat. Every member had their own stand-alone store to live in and do whatever they want with it, even installing a bathroom in each one. Since only 4 stores were taken the rest of the stand alone became vacant.
Throughout the years, they began training and doing vigilante jobs like stopping break-ins, drug dealers and petty thievery. Through the training, Axl learns more about the power he obtains, He can change from Maroon to brown vapors, which makes a non-lethal poison with his hands. It causes the victim to become weak or numb, depending on their built stature. He even found out he can grind on rails, run on walls and bounce on objects. Axl used this inhuman flowmotion to escape or go to a place quickly.
The Biohazards usually stole from criminals to pay for supplies and food. Since Prodigy mall was abandoned, they donât need to pay for the building or taxes. (I donât know shit about real estate so bear with me) Zack built a generator to bring electricity to the mall.
After a year, The crew believed they were ready to set their sight on the âreal criminalsâ. They began attacking the corruption of the 4 men. Blocking their shipments, hacking into their personal databases and expose their corruptions, Crashing dinner parties, sabotaging their sales, and âTook careâ of higher ups that preyed on the weak.
This act of rebellion was definitely noticed by the four men. They named the Biohazards as domestic terrorists, Sharps men were told to shoot on sight if Axl approached, Cloweâs news outlets labeled them as dangerous to the public. They even promised exceedingly high cash rewards for any information that leads to the arrest for Biohazard members. They wanted them dead or alive. But the more Bachmann tried to contain the situation, the more the biohazards pushed back.
Zack set up a pirate radio station to spread news of the Biohazards good doings and exposing the corruption of the government. As well as share his personal taste of music. The radio station was called R4dio-4ctive with Zack Attack as the host. Listeners tuned in mostly to support the group, Obtain news about the Biohazards or the Government, or simply to listen to some good music. Despite being called R4dio-4ctive, Zack never played the song âRadioactiveâ saying that âYou'll catch him playing country before playing the Imagine Dragons.â
People became fearful of The Biohazardâs action. But, some were inspired. There were even more protests against Bachmannâs men. Riots, muckrakers, and people who turned themselves in to derail their investigation to capture the Biohazards.
There were miscellaneous groups who wanted to put an end to the Biohazards. Most of them Hate groups, which the Biohazards took care of on the side. The U.N. even has its sights on Axl. Naming him âThe most dangerous man in the worldâ. Axl became the poster boy of the Biohazards.
-Time Skip-
(Axl and the crew are 17 at this point) Itâs 2012, The election is coming up and Bachmann is running. The reckoning clock ends election day. The Biohazards needed to do something before he gets elected. Axl sneaks into a news office building owned by Clowe. He is then attacked by a humanoid mech. Weaponry Axl never saw before. Axl manages to destroy the machine despite his poison powers having no effect on the mech. The user was an FMC soldier, saying that âthis was just a prototypeâ before Axl kills him. While scrounging the office Axl finds a letter saying âwe have a prototype of a machine that can transport people to different worlds.â Axl takes the Address (an underground base) and begins to attack the date (a couple days) the letter noted.

The Ultimate Guide to Buying the Best Supplements for Your Body
What are the best supplements for you? Do I really need to take the best supplements?
In an ideal world, we would not need to supplement. Weâd get all we need from foodâespecially if weâre eating real food, fruits, veggies, meats and fish, nuts and seeds.
However, as great as real food is for us, itâs important to recognize the outside forces working against our optimal health and absorption of these nutrients in our modern lifestyles including:
Chronic stress
Toxic burden (both from foods, additives, environmental chemicals, hygiene/cleaning products)
Pesticides
GMOs (genetically modified organisms)
A decrease in soil diversity and health (leading to a decrease in nutrient quality)
Poor sleep quality
Poor water filtration (tap water)
Less outdoor/nature exposure
Disconnectedness with community/social relationships (a la technology)
Sedentary lifestylesâtraffic, desk jobs, screen time
Over-use/reliance on antibiotics and other medications (damaging the gut and liver)
With multiple variables working against us in all directions, supplementation with particular vitamins and minerals is like health insurance for all the daily healthy habits that you practice.
This will help you get the most out of them. And, while you cannot out-supplement a poor diet or poor lifestyle choices, you CANÂ have the best supplements to compliment all the âhard workâ that you already do for self-care (like eating a nutrient-dense diet, regular exercise and movement, social connectedness, outdoor exposure, organic skincare, etc.).Â
So what are the best supplements to choose if you want to maximize your health?
Not just any supplementsâsmart best supplements.
There are some general rules of thumb to consider for âsmart supplementation,â including:
1. Be selective with your supplementation (Not all supplements are created equal).
2. Customize your vitamin and mineral needs for your body (not what Google or a newsÂ
headline tells you that you need).
3. Get nutrients from food whenever possible.
Here is your Guide to Smart Supplementation, with 7 things to consider when investing in your âsupplementalâ health insurance.
1. Not All Supplements Are Created Equal
Just because the label says âfish oilâ does not mean âfish oil.â Unfortunately, just like the words ânaturalâ and âorganicâ are not regulated by the FDA when it comes to food (âcertified organicâ is), supplements are not regulatedâthus, even though it looks like fish oil and says âfish oil,â does not mean itâs fish oil. And the same goes for most all vitamins and minerals on shelves.
Many of these formulas and best supplements sound good in theory, but with long shelf lives, unknown processing practices, hot shipping conditions, and potential for rancidity (particularly fish oils), how do you know what is legit? Typically with this one, you get what you pay for. Cutting corners in the name of cheap best supplements can have long-reaching health effects. Especially, if a product contains the wrong ingredient form or potentially harmful contaminants. Or if the active ingredients arenât absorbed properly.
Thereâs a reason there is a difference in a $50 probiotic compared to a $10 one.
In addition, pharmaceutical-grade best supplementsâthose straight from the company and/or a healthcare practitioner have a likelihood of being âmore legitâ than those you find from third-party sellers or on the generic supplement aisles at the grocery stores.
In a study (FDA, 2012) of 120 immune support and weight loss supplements purchased from retail stores (CVS, Walgreens, etc.) and Internet sites, the FDA found that not one supplement met criteria the that the FDA recommends for competent and reliable scientific evidence when best supplements boast claims and that the majority of supplements had not been tested on humans.
Another study (Newmaster et al, 2013) tested 44 bottles of popular supplements sold by 12 retail companies and outlets. They found that many were not what they claimed to be, and that pills labeled as popular herbs were often diluted â or replaced entirely â by cheap fillers like soybean, wheat and rice. For examples, two bottles labeled as St. Johnâs wort for treating mild depression, contained none of the medicinal herb. And of the 44 herbal supplements tested, one-third showed outright substitution, meaning there was no trace of the plant advertised on the bottle â only another plant in its place.
The bottom line?
Go with a reputable company, and consult a holistic healthcare practitioner who often has a direct line to pharmaceutical-grade (much more regulated) supplement companies. Many pharmaceutical-grade companies have higher regulation and are continually researching and testing the efficacy of products, such as Thorne Research and Metagenics.
2. How is Your Digestion?
Before we even talk any more about supplementing properly, letâs first talk about your digestionâhow is it? If you are not digesting your nutrients in the first place, than the best supplements you take matter very little (unless they are digestive supplements).
That said, boosting your supplement (and nutrient) power with some helpful digestive practices could be the secret sauce for getting the most out of any supplements you take, including the basics like:
Chewing your food well, drinking water throughout the day.
Refraining from processed and refined foods. Slowing down while you eat, eating healthy fats and foods containing fat soluble vitamins (especially Vitamin D, Vitamin K and Vitamin A).
Reaching for organic produce and grass-fed/pastured meats as much as possible.
Resorting first to investing in digestive best supplements, before spending money on any other supplements (that may or may not digest properly). Â
A quality probiotic, plus potentially some digestive enzymes, HCL (hydrochloric acid) could be the âsecretâ sauce for you, particularly if leaky gut, digestive distress, or other gut-related inflammation (like allergies, headaches, food sensitivities, blood sugar imbalances, etc.) are at play. Ensure your digestion is up to speed (daily bowel movements, decreased bloating/gas, etc.)
3. More is Not Necessarily Better
More always seems better right? So, more greens and more working out. Additionally, more kombucha as well as more vitamins and minerals. But itâs not always the case. When we take more than we needâof any best supplements for too long toxicity can happen (overload), and have the opposite effects we originally intended in the first place.
The alternative? Maintenance supplementationâusing best supplements generally as a baseline and extra little booster to the foods you do eat. Maintenance supplementation involves supplementing with selected micronutrients that are difficult to obtain even in the context of your nutrient-dense whole-foods diet. Best supplements in this category are generally taken in small doses, indefinitely and vary from person to person, depending on your bodyâs needs.
For instance, I take a daily B-Vitamin Complex, Cod Liver Oil and Zinc supplement because of my history of being low in the nutrients these supplements provide as well as noting a significant difference in how I feel when I take them (way better).
All this said, there IS such thing as therapeutic supplementationâa short-term dosing of supplements to help boost any deficiencies you may haveâoften times in âtherapeutic dose,â or higher amount.
For example, you might take a round of âanti-microbialâ (gut killing) supplements for a solid 30-60 days if youâve been diagnosed with SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). Also, you might kick up your vitamin C a notch if you feel a cold coming on. A healthcare practitioner can help guide you in therapeutic supplementation.
4. Multi-Vitamins Arenât All They Are Cracked Up to Be
Taking a multi? You may want to think twice. The problem with multivitamins is that they often contain too little of beneficial nutrients (like magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin K2). Too much of potentially toxic nutrients like folic acid, calcium, iron, and vitamin E. This means that multivitamins can cause nutrient imbalances that contribute to disease.
Research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (2013) found that multivitamins were ineffective in preventing cancer, cognitive decline and other claims multi-vitamins had been known to make. And another review in the Journal of the American Medical Association, that evaluated more than 68 trials with 230,000 participants, found that treatment with synthetic vitamins (i.e. fake, cheap vitamins) often found in multivitamins (such as beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E) may actually increase the risk of death.
The consensus on taking a multi-vitamin? Save your money, and instead, reach for the actual single vitamins and minerals that you DO need.Â
5. Observe
So how do you know what vitamins or minerals you really do need in the first placeâand is it even worth it? Vitamin and mineral supplementation CAN be tremendously beneficial. Particularly, given the lack of nutrient-density in much of our modern-day food supply and overburden of outside toxinsâgiven you do invest in quality supplements; you lack certain micro-nutrients in your diet; and you are taking the right supplements for your body.
Interestingly, it is always advised, for starters, you work with a knowledgeable healthcare providerâsuch as a nutritionist or functional medicine practitionerâwho can help you navigate what your body needs. However, simply being in touch with your body can point you in a good direction.
Here are common signs and symptoms, and the minerals and vitamins most often associated with them:
Craving chocolate often?âMagnesium (Topical Oil, Natural Calm, Greens, Raw Nuts/Seeds, Raw Cacao)
Neeeeeed Coffee or Caffeine?âAmino Acids (Tyrosine, DLPA), Sodium (Sea Salt), Phosphorus (pinto beans, pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts, lentils)
White Spots on Fingernails? Zinc deficiency
Fatigue, Muscle Aches or Weakness?âVitamin D , Iron (grass-fed red meat, organ meat, shellfish, canned sardines, broccoli, kale, spinach, *never supplement with iron unless you are extremely low)
Low Energy, Anxiety, and/or AnemiaâVitamin B-12
Skin Breakouts, Acne, Inflammationâ Omega 3, Digestive Enzymes
Dry Skin, WrinklesâBiotin, Sulfur (egg yolks, meat, poultry, and fish, garlic, onions, brussels sprouts, asparagus, kale, sauerkraut).
Thyroid Imbalances (enlarged thyroid), Shortness of Breath, Weight Gain/Weight PlateausâIodine (iodized salt, plain yogurt, fish, seaweed, pastured eggs)
Suppressed Immunity (frequently sick)âVitamin A (Cod Liver Oil), Omega 3âs, ProbioticsConstipation- Zinc, B-12
6. Test, Donât Guess
In addition, to observation and checking in with yourself (signs and symptoms), testingâ(both lab and functional evaluations) conducted by a nutritionist, functional medicine practitioner or other healthcare provider can help take the guesswork out of âwhat to take.â
Instead of supplementing with a cocktail of nutrients you think you do need, get some blood work, or other necessary clinical labs run to address other imbalances (such as gut-health or hormone needs) in order to determine a no-nonsense nutritional therapy supplement protocol to help bolster your bod back to itâs happy place.
7. The Bottom Line: Get as Many Nutrients from Food As Possible
Best supplements can be great, but nothing beats real food. Aim for food and nutrient density (fresh organic produce, pastured and grass-fed meats, organic organ meats, wild caught fish and seafood, quality fatsâavocados, coconut oil, ghee, pastured butter, fermented foods) and variety to get the diversity of minerals and vitamins you need.
Sure chicken, broccoli and sweet potatoes are healthy, but when we eat the same foods day in and day out, are we truly being healthy?âGetting the diversity of health-giving nutrients our body desires?
In addition, Whole foods are more effective than supplements in meeting nutrient needs.
For example, cancer-fighting antioxidant-rich berries, spinach and broccoli. These are tremendously more effective than any synthesized supplemental form of Vitamins and Minerals we could take. Or a balanced plate at meal times throughout the day. This is consist of proteins, veggies and healthy fats. This balanced plate can provide a pure amount of vitamins and minerals you may try to get in your multi-vitamin.
Ultimately, aim to get the majority of your nutrients from food as possible. Use supplementation wisely to help re-calibrate the body when deficiency is warranted.Â
