Learn a Foreign Language Month: Know More About World’s Linguistic Structure
Since the dawn of time, humans have used language as a medium of communication. But with boundaries and barriers, each culture developed its own unique language to communicate. Despite the Constitution of India recognizing only 22 languages, there are an estimated 780 languages in India itself, making India the second most linguistically diverse country in the world.
December is celebrated as ‘Learn a Foreign Language Month’. During this month, people around the world dust off their old language textbooks, and try to learn a new language.
Learning a new language comes with a lot of benefits. It improves your understanding of other cultures, opens up new job opportunities, and makes it easier for you to travel to another country.
To observe Learn a Foreign Language Month, let’s look at some amazing facts about languages.
There are over 2,700 languages in the world
Chinese, Spanish, English, and Hindi are some of the most widely spoken languages in the world. But they are only a part of the major languages. It is estimated that there are over 2,700 languages spoken in the world with 7,000 individual dialects.
2. The Khmer language has the highest number of alphabets
With over 74 letters, Khmer is the language with the most number of alphabets. It is the official and national language of Cambodia and has been influenced by Sanskrit and Pali.
3. Tamil and Korean share a lot of common words
According to a legend, Heo Hwang-ok, the wife of Korea’s King Suro, arrived by boat from a distant kingdom called ‘Ayuta’. The kingdom of ‘Ayuta’ has been linked to the mistranslation of the Ay Kingdom, a vassal to the Pandyan Empire of ancient Tamilakam, present-day Tamil Nadu. Despite not being proven, Tamil and Korean languages do share some interesting similarities. Here are just some of the interesting similarities between the languages:
Grass: Pronounced Pul in Tamil, Pol in Korean
Day: Pronounced Nal in Tamil and Korean, both
Little bit: Pronounced Koñcam Koñcam in Tamil and Jogeum Jogeum in Korean
Mother: Pronounced Amma in Tamil, Omma in Korean
Sister/sister-in-law: Pronounced Anni in Tamil, Eonni in Korean
Must/have to: Kattayamaka in Tamil, Kachoyham in Korean
One: Onnu in Tamil, Eonnu in Korean
4. Only 33% of English Language is Thought to be Original
It is estimated that only 33% of words in the English language are derived from Old English, making the rest of the language borrowed. The English language has heavily borrowed from Old Norse, French and Latin. Words have also been derived from Sanskrit like Juggernaut (Jagann?tha), Jungle (Jangala), and Bangle (Bangala).
5. Over 200 languages in the world are artificial
Despite the number of languages estimated at 2,700, there are more than 200 languages completely made for books, television and movies. This shows the capability of human minds. These languages are learnt by hardcore fans around the world. Some popular artificial languages are Na’vi from Avatar, Kiliki from Baahubali, Valyrian and Dothraki from Game of Thrones and a plethora of Elvish languages from Lord of the Rings.
Filaantro, along with Child Help Foundation, recognizes the importance of language. In Ashram Schools, we make an effort to teach students English. This will help them to secure job opportunities in the future.
How many languages can you speak? Let us know in the comment section below.

catching up on companions chats on my agent
Lydalea’s been anti-social since the brainwashing thing.
Raina is So Cute. and she wants to train! Lyda is already attached. I’m sorry Mordra you’ve been replaced.
Lokin is so chill about everything. I like that he interacts with other companions. He seems cool. It’s great to have a fellow agent around. He’s so much a spy as he is a mad scientist.
Vector’s past is so interesting. I want to know about his joining. What his life was like. It seems like he didn’t lose contact. His mini quests are so interesting. He has this super kiliky quest.
Lydalea is a bit concerned about the super kilik nest but she let Vector go to the party. She sure as hells didn’t go.
Then afterwards Vector has this idea for an alliance.and he talks about it like an imperial. How can we use the kiliks. He’s still very much an imp. I’m super interested to see where him playing politics to get his alliance goes.
We had to turn him down. I knew it was coming. we flirted once. Sorry Vector, Lyda doesn’t trust your breeding. She’s also kind of creeped out by him. Sometimes he’s just talking weirdly. He kind, it’s nice and then he says something out of a Jedi Horror Movie like “We hear the song of the universe and We are at peace.” Peace is kinda a threat on this side of the galaxy Vec.
I finally got through Kaliyo’s evil exs. Well not evil. Kaliyo is more evil then most of them. My favorite was the Menace. Kaliyo has gotten fond of my agent. It’s so touching. Lydalea and Kaliyo don’t see eye to eye. They don’t always get along but Lyda respects her skills and kinda likes her even if she dislikes 50% of what comes out of Kaliyo’s mouth. I’m so pleased Kaliyo pointed it out. and offered to go arms shopping! Lyda would love to go.
Kaliyo’s anarchy past seems cool. I think she really cares about these old friends. I hope she doesn’t have to choice me over them. Lyda is fine to go along and meet this old friend. what’s another ex. Brentaal is near the core. If the anarchist are a republic problem Lyda doesn’t mind helping. The enemies of your enemies is useful.
It’s amusing Kaliyo tried to get stuff by a ship with 2 spies on it. Lydalea was a dick and let Lokin keep spying on Kaliyo and update her. If you’re polite about the comforting Kaliyo actully likes it! and says “Thank you”! She normally dislike niceties!
I want Kaliyo and Lyda to be friends.and I want them to like each other. but I think they’re falling into “friends that don’t actully like each other but care” I love that trope. But man Kailyo only approves when Lyda is letting anger out I swear. I had a conversion with Kaliyo where I got +50 Kaliyo and +400 Lokin and it was Kaliyo’s.
maybe they can be hunting buddies or Kaliyo can think Lyda’s cute or like her Jedi rage murder mode.

whoa these are all so informative
also the KiLiKi one YES its right here and the language is so easy and fun to learn
Random movie facts I just know for some reason??
I’m literally a living mani ratnam encyclopedia, so beware
The cast Bheem wears on his hand in RRR is not a deliberate choice. He wears it because Tarak irl broke his hand (or wrist).
Eega is the only movie for which Rajamouli wrote the story.
Nearly all of Rajamouli’s movies are centered around revenge and have (atleast) one iconic silhouette shot and weapon.
Actress Sridevi was the first choice for the role of Sivagami.
Baahubali was just supposed to be one movie.
Kilikili (the language of the Kalakeyas from Baahubali) is a legit language with grammer rules and a website dedicated to it. According to Rajamouli it’s the “worlds youngest and easiest language”
Speaking of language, Mani Ratnam’s only Telugu movie, Geethanjali, was possible because Nagarjuna (yes, the actor Nagarjuna) followed (stalked?) Mani Ratnam every morning after watching Agni Natchathiram/Gharshana.
The arc of Surya from Thalapathi begins and ends with the shot of the sun. This is because he’s modeled after Karna and Karna is the son of the Sun God. Also many important moments of Surya in the movie has the sun in the background.
Arvind Swamy and Shobana (mild spoiler ahead?) who get married in the movie were classmates when they were kids.
Arvind Swamy was not the first choice for his now iconic roles in Thalapathi, Roja, Bombay, and Thani oruvan/Dhruva.
In Iruvar/Iddaru, Kalpana (played by Aishwarya Rai) looking like Pushpavalli has an important part. The movie is the metaphorical biography of the friendship between MGR and Karunanidhi and it was recently found that Jayalitha (on whom Kalpana is based on) did in fact look similar to MGR’s first wife.
In the same movie, the role of Tamizhselvan (the Karunanidhi equivalent) was offered to and was auditioned by many, including R. Madhavan (who was rejected because his “eyes looked too young”), Mammootty (who had a look test, but rejected the role), Kamal Haasan (who rejected the role), and Arvind Swamy (who was initially finalized, had a look test, and even recorded two poems that are used in the final cut, but was unable to act, as AVM productions refused to let him, as it would bring continuity issues to his other film Minsara Kanavu/Merupu Kalalu). The role finally went to Prakash Raj, who got a national award for this role.
The song Vennila Vennila from this movie is shot in all natural light as the technicians were on strike during the schedule.
Mammootty is 70. Not a fact. Just wanted to let y’all know that Mammukka is 70 years old.
There is an alternate ending to Minsara Kanavu/Merupu Kalalu, (spoiler ahead) where Thomas does not become a priest. Instead Priya and Deva simply get married after Deva jumps off the train.
Director Gautam Vasudev Menon has two cameos in this movie. He worked as an assistant director.
For a movie, Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman wanted to use a Backstreet Boys song. When asked for permission, the production company asked for 1.5 million (not sure if INR or USD) as royalties (they ended up just creating a song from scratch). But when the same production company asked permission to use Chaiyya Chaiyya, from Dil Se for Inside Man, though they were willing to give it for free, Mani Ratnam (the director of Dil Se) and AR Rahman (the composer) demanded the same amount of money which the production company paid.
AR Rahman wanted to record an album with SPB in which Rahman wanted SPB to sing ARR’s popular songs that were originally sung by other singers.
That’s all I can remember for now. Some of these are from deep Wikipedia rabbit holes. Most from a book called Conversations with Mani Ratnam. More soon?
