My thoughts on the ending of Danganronpa Despair Time Chapter 2
Man just when I think I can predict what'll happen in Drdt it throws a 180
I'm gonna hide the spoilerly stuff under the read more but first things first of my god... this was great!!! And it also makes me TERRIFIED for chapter 3 because chapter 2 was enough of an emotional rollar coaster, idk if the dev or anyone working on drdt will see this silly post bc a LOT of people have been sharing their thoughts on the ending of chapter 2 but I really enjoyed the ending
And that I don't mind if chapter 3 has a long wait bc my mental health is in shambles after this chapter
Okay now the spoilery stuff!
-First of all, I did find it interesting that the secrets (including David in his joker arc) was a bit of a red herring, the secrets weren't part of the murder/case at all, unless you count the part of Arturo threatening Eden over his secret, but after this trial EVERYONE's laundry has been aired and I wonder if that'll be touched upon in Chapter 3
-I think I've said this before but I love how the dead cast (Xander, Min, Arei, and now Ace) are just constantly mentioned, haunting the narrative, I'm pretty sure they're gonna keep that up
-Teruko having a mental breakdown after this, like homegirl spent ALL of chapter 2 trying to repress her grief over Xander and Min, but now that Arei, Ace, and potentially Levi are dead she ended up cracking, chapter 2 ending with her breaking down in the darkened trial room is heartbreakiiiing
-I read a couple posts before typing this and one of them mentioned that "MonoTV's comment about the most mastermind-y person getting punished" applied to Teruko almost being shot after telling Ace to kill MonoTV (she tried), the foreshadowing of this, like hey guys remember in chapter 1 when Ace was dragged into watching horror movies and he commented they were so scary he could've died from it :))
-Levi's really putting the L in Levi dude cant stop getting injured. but seriously I just wanna know WHY DID HE DO THAT LEVI OH MY GOD. LEVIIII
-MonoTV genuinely scared me, also the implications of who could potentially be running this show is also scaring me. and the implications that they're programmed to run this show until EVERYONE is dead.
-Not Ace's excecution being he gets psychologically tortured until its too much for his heart
-The fact it wasn't related to his talent but it was related to his constant fear of death is just evil.
-Also the way Ace goes out, before the ending I kind of thought his arc was a mirror to Arei's where that while she improved and started to trust some of the others, Ace became more cruel and distrustful, even to those still reaching out to him, he was so scared of dying that he ironically caused his own death by participating in the killing game and killing Arei
-And that he was so scared of dying, yet told MonoTV to go ahead with his execution so that the others could give Levi medical treatment and he even yells at Arturo that he CAN save Levi if he tries, dude in the end did change but sadly like Arei, he died before before being able to fully embrace that change
-also if you want to go more feral over the little details check out the names on the gravestones :))) I know at least ONE of the names is his only friend. And based his line of "I'm gonna have THREE deaths on my hands!" His friend might be deceased and he blames himself for it
-I was thinking "I sure hope the squeamish of the cast aka Charles and Rose shield their eyes during the execution" and then there was Whit's line of telling Charles to cover his eyes when Teruko is about to get shot
-Whit's sprite when the gang realize the elevators are closed is scaring me a little. its also scaring the Whit fans!
-That's all I'm gonna say about the ending, it was emotional and at least Ace was able to have some good moments before his end, I wonder what'll happen with the secrets aftermath including David causing problems on purpose, the cast realizing that the killing game is making them worse, and all the little lore that got dropped.

Marooned: Chapter 17
Kid x FemReader x Killer
Warnings: violence
Ensnared
Killer was working in the galley prepping lunch, when Heat burst through the doors. He didn't need to say anything for Killer to know something was deeply wrong. The look on his face said enough.
"Killer, it's Captain. H-he," Heat couldn't finish before Killer was out the door.
The first mate was on the deck, scanning around for Kid in a panic, gaze briefly landing on a group of people dogpiled on Mini to keep her restrained. It wasn't hard to find him with the amount of screaming he was doing. Kid was grabbing his flesh forearm with his metal hand, flapping it around. He was gripped with terror as his eyes met Killer's. It wasn't quite the same, but it was eerily similar to the look he had when he lost his arm. Killer rushed to his captain's side to see that Kid couldn't move anything below his wrist.
"THAT BITCH THAT FUCKIN BITCH! SHE FUCKED UP MY HAND."
Killer grabbed Kid's shoulder and turned him so they were facing each other. "KID! Slow down. What happened?"
"ROTTEN! THAT LYIN BITCH MADE ME THROW HER IN THE OCEAN AND NOW MY HAND'S FUCKED!"
Killer's eyes widened under his mask. There was a lot to unpack in that sentence. "What lie?! Made you what? KID! She can't swim!"
"OF COURSE SHE CAN'T. SHE DID THIS WITH HER DEVIL FRUIT!" Kid yelled, flapping his limp wrist in from of Killer's face. "SHE'S A FUCKIN MARINE, KIL!"
Heat appeared next to Killer, or maybe he had been there the whole time. Killer had been completely focused on Kid. "She said her name was F/N L/N." Heat explained. "Killer, I think that's-"
Killer's eyes widened. "The Sea Snake, yeah I know." He would revisit that discovery later. Killer turned his attention back to Kid. He wasn't the first mate for no reason. He handled high-pressure situations well, reading them and formulating a plan in seconds. "Kid, listen to me. She's not a marine. She kills marines. And I think she can reverse whatever she did to your hand." Kid started to yell again and Killer cut him off. "KID! In about 2 more seconds, I won't be able to reach her and your hand might be like that forever." Killer paused to catch his breath. "If I'm wrong, you can throw her back over and I won't stop you, ok?" Killer didn't make a move until he saw the slight nod of Kid's head. Then he was diving into the water, hoping he could still pry you from the ocean's grasp. Or they would all suffer Kid's wrath, like they did the first time one of his arms was maimed.
At this point on his career, Killer had dove in after Kid more times than he could remember. If he wasn't such a practiced, strong swimmer, there would have been no way he could have caught up to you. In the murky darkness, he had to use observation haki to pinpoint where you were, making contact with your chilled skin just as his lungs started burning. He wrapped his arm around your middle and swam back to where the light filtered through the water's surface.
With an agonal gasp, you were suddenly back in your body, rolling onto your elbows and knees to violently expel ocean water from your lungs. This was somehow worse than throwing up, the sensation of warm liquid coming from a place it should not be coming from, salt burning your windpipe, followed by dry heaving. Your eyes and nose burned, too. A mix of tears, mucus, and saliva were coming out of your face as it forced the salt from your system. Blinking into focus, you saw that you were on a wooden deck, on a ship. Fear inched into your mind, thinking you were back in the custody of Von Kossa until you felt around for the bullet wounds and the melted flesh and found that they were long healed. After a few deep breaths, you remembered what had happened and the fear slipped away.
Why the fuck were you back here? Why the fuck did they bring you back here? Maybe Kid changed his mind and wanted to make you die slowly. There was no where to escape but the sea, and that got you nowhere. You coughed up some more water, strength slowly seeping back into you as the ocean lost its hold. You doubted that the deal to let you off at the next island was still in effect, if you lived that long. And now your secrets were out. What do I have to lose?
A slow grin stretched across your lips. You had always wanted to fight a supernova.
You didn't make a move, taking account of your current surroundings. You heard Minerva in the background squealing. At least someone has my back. Killer was the closest to you, there were scattered people on deck, and the familiar vibration of Kid's heavy steps came ever closer. When his shadow moved into your view, you tucked your leg underneath you and sprang towards him with a fist full of armament haki. It nearly met its target, catching Kid off-guard, but was blocked by Killer. You thought you heard a grunt on impact. Killer wasn't expecting that either; you could tell by the way he became unbalanced the more you forced your fist against him.
"MOVE, KILLER!" You and Kid shouted simultaneously, eyes locked fiercely with each other. Killer jumped back behind Kid, not willing to argue with his captain.
"STAY OUT OF IT. SHE'S MINE," Kid growled. The purple energy of his devil fruit crackled around him, pulling pieces of metal together around the hand you disabled.
You tilted your head to the side, "You sure? Looks like you could use a hand." You sneered at him, the two of you circling each other. It wasn't lost on you that the deck had cleared and those that remained were taking cover. Several pieces of metal flew in your direction without being able to hit you. It seemed like he was testing your abilities, how fast you were, how agile you were. Plucking some of the smaller pieces from the air, you enclosed them in your fist, willing them to become non-metallic, small, cylindrical. Dodging shrapnel, you loaded your gun blade with the only thing you could think of at the time, glass bullets. If they didn't completely explode in the chamber, maybe you could do something with them. At the very least, you could be annoying.
"YER DEAD, ROTTEN. DO YA HEAR ME? FIX MY FUCKEN HAND OR YER DEAD!" Kid swiped at you with a giant metal arm. It was big, therefore it was clumsy and slow, compared to you, that is.
This was not going to end well if he had you tucking, rolling, and running around the deck. Stamina was finite and it was already depleted from using your power on him and being soaked with saltwater. "Can't!" You darted around to get an angle on some of the rigging, thinking back to the poor quality knots from earlier. "Used my fruit too much today!" You were still using it, touching the things he threw at you, and turning them into an element he couldn't control. "Oh yeah! AND I DON'T FUCKING WANT TO!" This was the most you had ever used your power, but it was slowly dwindling down the things he could fight you with, increasing the time you had between avoiding each object and allowing you to take aim properly. With a few shots, which actually went off, you severed the ropes holding one of the sails. Kid was momentarily distracted by swatting away the remaining shots, but it was enough.
The instant Kid was engulfed in the canvas of the sail, you took off sprinting towards him. You licked your lips with satisfaction at the feeling of warm, wet fluid dripping down your blade, over your hand. It was supposed to be firmly nestled between Kid's ribs. Instead, it was stopped just before breaking his skin, coated in purple electricity. But your hands hadn't stopped. The blood was your own, your grip was no longer on the handle and had been forced over the sharp edge. You caught only a brief glimpse of the damage, and even that was obscured by the amount of blood, before the air was knocked out of you and you were crushed against Kid's chest by his two metal arms. You struggled to wriggle out from his grasp until the pressure increased and you felt a few cracks in your ribcage, nearly passing out from the deep, aching pain. You didn't need to look at him to know the smugness written on his face. He had led you to that opening on purpose. All the remaining air in your lungs was stolen by a gasp when Kid squeezed you even harder.
"Look," Kid demanded, turning you slightly so that you could see Mini, trapped by a scrap metal vice. "Yer gonna undo whatever ya did, for the sake of yer pig. Understand?"
That was low. You could have easily taken a hostage yourself, however dishonorable it was. It was stupid not to. This was a pirate ship. The Kid Pirate ship. Not a crew known for honor. You could only nod as your grasp on consciousness quickly faded.

How would the big four feel about their significant other calling them cute nicknames? For example, Kiki for Kid and Killer. Are they against that sort of thing or do they accept it behind closed doors perhaps or are they going to be like “fuck yeah I’m their pookie” in front of other crews?
omg I couldn't imagine calling Kid or Killer by a cute nickname or pet name.
Isn't that wild? Everything I head canon and talk about and I'm blushing some middle schooler who's never been kissed just thinking about them by anything except their names??
ESPECIALLY KID
Killer - I mean, Kil/l just rolls off the tongue well enough, sure. Heat and Wire are already just - I mean T-T
But like.

CHERRYADE: TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? It all sounds a little too perfect. Or maybe that’s just me. Song Kyumin. Jul 1, 2021.
JAGUAR have emerged from their year-and-two-months period of almost complete radio silence with news that has shocked many—or perhaps a little less than many, because you cant really expect to rise from the dead and still have millions of fans at your beck and call, ready to lap up any scraps you throw them. A new boy group is on the way, and their name is CHERRYADE. Something too sweet to drink all in one go, but too carbonated to sit on the tongue comfortably after just one sip. It seems rather on-brand for a company that has so far fed us one group that hated their failed-actor-turned-idol newbie’s guts, one soloist who kicked the chair after one (1) album that tanked, and a duo who I’m still not sure were hate-fucking or making attempts on the other’s life every time the camera turned.
This time, though, they’re not unveiling their (sure-to-be devastatingly attractive) members one-by-one from wherever they’ve been hiding them, as per the last three attempts. Neither are they shoving their not-yet-debuted faces in our faces with too many social media accounts or mind-numbingly boring introduction videos. Instead, JAGUAR have made the decision to protect the idol-environment and reuse our past favourites, taking them from one unknown group to another. Aren’t we lucky.
This isn’t a new (or even particularly exciting) concept. You may recognise the formula from STRMRUNNER Media, who chose trainees from only the top companies to shove together in a now-superstar group named SO(U)L. JAGUAR CEO Ae Seungdae must have witnessed the success the seven have seen and decided he wanted a piece of the pie. They even share the same amount of members. But I doubt they’ll be greeting each other at any music shows or posting cutesy selcas on Twitter, because some of the boys selected for this ‘supergroup’ of sorts aren’t known to be the nicest.
First, JAGUAR reached out to FNC and asked if they would miss SLOW MOTION’s once-leader Kil Doyeon terribly. The answer must’ve been no, as he’s rumoured to be the appointed leader of CHERRYADE also. Next on the list was METRONOME Media’s Duan Jieyang (who was more commonly known as DJ, although it’s been said he’s long abandoned that alias) and Jeon Haeil from their group ALGORHYTHM, disbanded in 2019, who had been in hot water previously for alleged fights breaking out between leader Daehoon and youngest Levi—who, funnily enough, left the group and ended up in SLOW MOTION not long after.
The higher-ups didn’t have to look too hard for the next couple of members, as they were right there in their pockets anyway. Qiao Yijun and Ahn Jaehee (our aforementioned failed actor) from BONSOIR were next on the roster, and the general consensus on that was that it was certainly an.. interesting choice to make. They were the two that seemed to despise each other the most, after all.
Next is one that may surprise some. Hwan Minhui (or GOGO, as many know and love him as) was recruited from SM’s much adored sub-unit NCT DREAM. Reactions were mixed, but the largest question of all was why. Alas, it doesn’t seem like JAGUAR is going to be holding a press conference anytime soon to answer that burning inquiry. Or releasing any sort of statement, either. There’s far too much on their plates for that—what with trying to get all these complete strangers to act civil with each other, and all.
The last member of CHERRYADE is the only new face that we’re receiving. Not much is known about him except his name, Lee Hasun, and that he’s the youngest of the lot. Let’s hope he doesn’t receive the same treatment as Jaehee did, because otherwise this ‘supergroup’ might last even less time than all of JAGUAR’s other ventures combined. And we wouldn’t want that, of course. Or would we? (Don’t answer that).
Whatever the public may think of them, the one thing that is certain is that JAGUAR won’t care. Their age old motto of ‘any press is good press’ has lasted them too long for them to be doing anything like reassessing their values or realigning their morals. Hell, some have even been saying that accused (or rather, known—it’s something of an open secret at this point) nepo baby BONSOIR manager Hong Jaeyoung has found his new place as CHERRYADE’s handler, so from that alone it doesn’t sound like they’re going to be off to a spectacularly great start public-opinion wise.
The group are making their debut on August 1st, 2021—a mere month from now. What they’re releasing is still a mystery (a single? An EP? A mini-album? I’m as clueless as you are), but what we do know is that it’s going to be called DOUBLE DIP. I can vaguely glean the concept they’re going for from the name alone. Teeth-rotting, sugary goodness. The type of stuff that makes your mouth feel heady and vision swim. Or your ears bleed, depending on your opinion on the type of music that JAGUAR has put out thus far. Their styling seems to be heading in the same direction, as the explosion of colour that makes up their seconds-long teaser video is reminiscent of a handful of candy scooped up into the hands of an eager child.
CHERRYADE marks JAGUAR’s fourth attempt at an idol presence. Most of the hard work has been done for them, what with them lifting most of the members from other groups, but that in no way means they won’t meet the same failed fate as all of their predecessors. I feel that most deciding to follow the group will be doing so more out of morbid curiosity rather than genuine excitement for the content they’ll produce, and music they’ll put out. Right now they seem more like a ticking time bomb set to explode in an array of violently bright colours and burnt sugar than a group of boys that’ll be loved by the masses.
But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe CHERRYADE will be the success JAGUAR has so sorely been wanting, and for more reasons than how many times they’ve been caught smoking, or leaving shady love hotels in the earliest hours of the morning. Maybe the seven will actually grow to like each other, and they’ll replace the previous reputation they held—of catty and spiteful boys who were there for the money and to make the lives of people they didn’t like as unpleasant as possible—with one that paints them as genuine, likeable people. We’ll just have to wait and see.
DOUBLE DIP. Whatever it turns out to be, it’s dropping August 1st, at 2PM KST. Do make sure to tune in, if you want to see what all the fuss is about.
Or don’t. I suppose I wouldn’t blame you.

Kenpachi Zaraki (Bleach) Chapter 1
There always seems to be a price that comes with getting involved in matters that have nothing to do with you.
Being a reaper was a task you'd decided to do for the free meals and perks. Nothing more.
Before you were here you were a lowly soul in the Rukongai and the reapers that you'd met over the hundred years of living there all seemed to have their own aspirations. You could care less. Your philosophy was nothing more than ensuring your own survival.
That's why you didn't understand it.
Everyone was panicking about hollows getting close to the squad barracks, but you weren't worried. This is literally what they trained you for. As long as you steered clear, you could probably lay low and catch a nap somewhere without engaging in useless battles. That was the plan at least.
The yell of a reaper ahead stopped you.
Your expectation was that it could have been a minor hollow just running around breaking stuff. But the sound of heavy steps crashing down drew your attention as you looked up.
"Great, a menos. No way am I getting in a fight with that. "
One of the captains could handle it.
You wanted a nap.
"Someone please help!"
The cries continued, and you turned your back, walking away. You recognized that voice. It was a medical reaper.
Hanataro Yamada.
The guy was a weakling, so you weren't even shocked that he was crying for help.
"Don't you worry Fuka-chan I-I'll protect you!!"
It didn't even sound like he believed his own words. For some reason, the statement made you stop. You glanced at them. Sure enough, Hanataro stood protectively in front of the girl at his side. She was clearly terrified, but his eyes looked resolute as he held out his blade.
"I won't let anything happen to you."
The determination displayed made your eyes widened, and when you saw the red charge of his blade, the blast he struck was impressive. It hit the menos right in its neck. Enough to cause a minor bruise. Hanataro stood his ground, and when you saw the menos about to charge a cero, your feet moved on their own.
"Bankai."
It was said so calmly.
Hanataro almost thought he imagined it. But the spikes that were now protruding from every part of the hollow's body alerted him that he was not hallucinating. It was real. When he caught your figure, you were striking the menos clean in half. Hanataro could only gape. He heard one finally cry from the monster, right as it dissipated in the air, and so did your body.
~~~
"We've managed to subdue all the hollows. Reinforcements will be sent to the Rukongai to conduct a patrol to protect the souls." Shinji informs.
Your captain was giving a brief, and you stood rarely listening to a word. When it was over, everyone seemed to disperse. As you're walking out you can hear some of them commending each other for their accomplishments in battle. You're walking down a path that connects with some other reapers from different squads.
"I bet you (L/N)-san just ran away again."
"Be quiet, she might be able to hear you."
"What, it's true. That's all she's good at!"
You didn't respond to the allegations. It made very little sense to try and defend your actions. They were just young and naive. Still believing that what they did would make some kind of cosmic difference.
"Ken-chan, I found her!!"
Everyone recognized that voice. You could practically see a path form. Even the jerks that were insulting you looked scared.
You clicked your tongue, about to step out of the way. Whioever they were chasing you knew it wouldn't end well. Just as you take a step to the right, you flinch. Your jaw clenched, and you caught the blade that appeared in front of you with your bare hands. The wind from the intended attack sent your hair tossing around. You could hear the gasps of astonishment in the space and you sent a glare directly at the man before you.
His grin was wide.
"Found you."
You released his blade, jumping backwards. You were pissed.
"He's picking a fight with coward (L/N)! He's gonna kill her."
You could hear the murmurs. Then it hit you, maybe you could save face. Everyone present still thought you were a coward. You could maintain your cover.
"Zaraki-taicho that's enough. " Jushiro was trying to de-escalate the situation, and Shinji just shook his head.
"Damn it, he's gonna ruin her day if this keeps up." Shinji spoke.
Kyouraku turned to the blond in question.
"What do you mean? Doesn't she run from battles, you should be there protecting your subordinate." Shinji shook his head.
"She's not as docile as you all seem to think."
"I give up, there's no way I can beat you Zaraki-taicho."
They all sweatdropped.
"More than meets the eye you said?" Toshiro asked. Jushiro rubbed his head awkwardly.
"Look at their faces, they completely lack faith in me, this could actually work!"
Kenpachi disappeared, and you tilted your head.
"All I have to do is not fight back, that's all. I'll be fine."
You expected him to appear right next to you. All you had to do was just barely defend and take the hit. Then you could actually salvage a nap. You don't expect him to go off course. Because his eyes are fixated on an unsuspecting victim.
"H-Hanataro watch out!!"
The scream from his friend startles you. Kenpachi is a distance away with his sword aimed in the medical reaper's direction.
"E-EH!! WHY ME!!"
Hanataro's yelp echoes and now you're pissed.
"Damn it!!"
Your feet leave the ground, you're in front of Hanataro in seconds. The crowd is stunned and Shinji merely girns when you draw your blade. The very second your blades connect, an onslaught of lightning that's generating has a gust of wind beating over the entire area.
A few of the reapers shield their faces. Kenpachi's clothing is getting wrecked by the bolts. Some of them connect to his skin, and you can see the slices that draw blood, but he merely laughs.
When it finally calms down, the audience can only stare. You straighten from your position, sheathing your blade.
Hanataro drops to the floor expressing his gratitude.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
You sigh heavily.
This entire day has gone to shit.
All because of that insufferable man.
Out of all of the Amaterasu employees that we see in the game, if you had to list them from most morally good to least, how would you list them?
Obviously, they are all terrible people in multiple ways, but I'm just curious
Hmm, interesting! I haven't even really considered how much they'd be weighed on a scale for their morality. I like contemplating new ways to 'rank' characters though, and the peacekeeper higher-ups, other than Yomi (and Hitman Zilch since they basically come in a package deal in my brain), do deserve some more attention from me, so I'll give it a go! I'll just stick with ranking the higher-ups since we have the most info on what we see of them in canon, so sorry Huesca, your judgement day will have to come another time (not to mention we don't have enough info on the specifics of how bad he really was other than him 'sacrificing others for his own research' and conspiring to kill Yakou's wife, but honestly that should be enough to send him into the murky depths of the river Styx). This list will go from least morally corrupt to most morally corrupt, but I think we can already tell who's at the top.
First off, it's our lil sickly guy Seth! Poor guy honestly did the least things wrong, probably couldn't even hurt a fly if he really tried. While he did threaten to sink the sub and arrest the detectives on scene, he did give them a time limit to investigate and find the culprit. It was a very restrictive time limit, but still a chance to save themselves nonetheless. He was just doing as he was ordered to by Yomi in regards to taking money from the church, who knows what would've happened to him if he disobeyed. Guess we'll never know, sorry Seth.
Next up is Martina. I've been debating on where to put her, but honestly compared to the others, she somehow manages to scrape by as the second least morally corrupt. Most of my reasoning is due to her actively realizing that Yomi was an awful influence and resigning as a peacekeeper. No peacekeeper other than Seth had that kind of hindsight of their actions being the cause of Yomi being Yomi. Martina's above Seth on the moral corruption list cause she still actively threatened to shoot two young detectives and definitely would've pulled the trigger had she not been stopped.
Swank takes a spot right smack dab in the middle on the Amaterasu morality scale. This dude is greedy af and worked alongside Hitman Zilch to frame Yuma for the massacre on the train. And he would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for that meddling chief! As soon as Yakou stepped into the scene, Swank's disposition took a surprising turn. He surrendered Yuma over to Yakou when he could've easily still arrested Yuma and moved on with his day. And yet, all it really took was for Yakou to say 'I'll tell WDO about your bad behavior and they'd be so mad at you >:T' and Swank took the hint and backed off. MAN DIDN'T EVEN GET BRIBED WITH MONEY! HE JUST TOOK THE L AND LEFT! That's the power of the charismatic blue father figure for ya. Honestly, Swank could've been ranked lower than Martina, but as far as we know, he never got that same sense of hindsight, so he could still be a money-grubbing, mass-murder framer to this day.
And now we move up to Guillaume and Dominic. These two are inseparable, so they shall be treated as such. I think its safe to say these guys like the thrill of hunting down Yuma and want to beat him and his allies to a pulp despite his pleas for mercy. They punch first and ask questions later. Not to mention they view all citizens as slaves, easily manipulated the power of Amaterasu. At least they gave up on harming Yuma when they were given the actual culprits, but Yuma would've easily been turned to paste if not for the detectives' intervention.
And finally, earning the top spot for most morally fucked by a landslide is Yomi! Do I even really need to go into the specifics about why this guy is so damn horrendous? Well, let's do a lightning round! Yomi hired a hitman to kill anyone who criticized or went against him (such as Yakou's wife), violently abused and almost had his 'girlfriend' killed, planned the Amaterasu Express Massacres, physically punished many of his coworkers, manipulated Yakou into killing Huesca, kicked down a dying Yakou, threatened to kill the detectives multiple times, and attempted to leak info about a militaristic experiment to create immortal soldiers to other facilities for some cash. Fuckin' bitch.
Train in Vain: Chapter 6 Risky Business
Summary:
You, Kid, Kil, and Franky get pulled over. The scary cop gives you a choice to make that will change the trajectory of your night.
Notes:
These guys just cannot catch a break.
TWs: Interactions with the police. Drug and drug dealing mentions. Cursing.
You all sat in silence. Kil’s earlier relaxed demeanor had seeped out of his posture. He hadn’t retracted his arm from its coil around your shoulders, but you felt his muscles pull into tight ropes around you. His grip was almost firm enough to be painful, but not quite. You stiffened into a sharp L shape, shoulders back and squared, lower back tensed against the pleather bench seat. You hated cops. You weren’t going to run, but you felt even more trapped than you normally did during your run-ins with the law while you were stuck in the back of this two-seater car.
Franky had, in a defiantly lethargic manner, pulled Merry over to the curb. You heard him push an exhale through his nostrils in an attempt at a self-soothing deep breath. You didn’t dare make a noise. The man had been kind enough to give you idiots a ride and this is how the universe repaid him. You saw Kid in the passenger seat in front of you cross his arms and heard him growl faintly.
After what seemed like hours, you saw the cop’s shadowy form appear just outside the passenger-side window. In front of the rhythmic flashing of the red and blue strobe, the figure seemed 10 feet tall. You held your breath. The shadow violently rapped its knuckles on the glass. Your entire body jumped out of its skin but you didn’t move an inch thanks to the counterweight of Kil’s arm.
“God fuckin’ dammit” You heard Kid spit as he fumbled to roll down the window with the old-fashioned hand crank. The large man turned the crank rapidly until the window had retreated into the car door. A uniform-clad forearm rested where the window used to be and the tall shadow leaned down towards the car.
The first thing you noticed was the man’s scar. He had a long fault running down the center of his forehead, through his right eye socket, and out over his right cheek. His hair was grey, close-cropped on the sides but slightly longer on top and slicked back with something greasy. His face was aggressively angular, even with his lips wrapped around a fat stogie as it was now. The smoke billowed from the end of the long cigar which hung precariously out the side of his mouth. If you’d been in the passenger seat, you would’ve started coughing already from the clouds of smoke wafting into your face, but Kid didn’t make a sound. The cop’s brow was pinched tightly as he surveyed Merry’s interior. After a second, the left side of his mouth curled up into a slight grin.
“Well, well, well. Two birds with one stone, eh Tashigi?” The man grunted. Somewhere behind him, obscured from your view by his large shoulders, another cop made a noise in the affirmative.
“Look Smoker, I don’t even know why you pulled me over,” Franky said defensively.
“You’ll call me Captain,” the cop spat. “And it’s not a big mystery, your right tail light is out.”
“Why is a Captain even doing traffic stops anyway?” Franky said, exasperated.
“I do as I please,” the Captain said cockily. The cop behind him handed him a clipboard. The man read over the paper briefly and then looked back up into the car. His gaze traveled to the back seat and he locked eyes with you. You quickly averted your gaze to the floor, afraid that holding his stare would prompt him to address you.
“Franky, how do you know these guys?” The Captain asked.
“I don’t see how that’s rele—” Franky started but was cut off.
“Answer the question, Mr. Flam,” the Captain snarled.
“Okay. God,” Franky sighed, “They’re friends of Luffy’s, alright? I’m just giving them a ride. Is that a crime?”
The Captain paused and stared at Kid who did not shrink from his intense gaze.
“No, but assault is.” The Captain responded. You swallowed.
“Eustass Kid and his partner in crime [NAME REDACTED]. Haven’t seen you boys down at the station in a while. You keeping your noses clean?” He asked, his voice bleeding with irony.
Kid and Kil said nothing.
“Last time I saw you was when I brought you in for questioning about those stolen guns I traced from the pawn shop back to your little recording studio. If I recall, I was about to put out a warrant for your arrest when an officer happened to take in a drunken ‘Scratchman’ Apoo for disturbing the peace at some bar and discovered one of the stolen guns on his person. After that, the officer investigated Apoo’s car and found the rest of the stolen weapons locked in his trunk. Apoo still swears up and down that he didn’t know about the guns, but everything just seemed to fall perfectly into place. Any of that ring a bell?”
Kid and Kil continued staring forward in silence.
The Captain looked back at you. You held his gaze warily.
“An entire car of guys with rap sheets and then there’s you, a young woman I’ve never seen before. How’d you get mixed up in this?” The Captain asked. You swallowed spit and Kil’s grip tightened on your shoulder but you stayed silent.
The Captain sighed and eyed you. You thought you saw the ghost of a smile on his lips but you were too nervous to be sure.
“Alright, this is how it’s gonna go. I have an APB out on a redhead, a blonde man, and a young woman for an assault on a train car earlier tonight. I could take you all downtown, right now, no questions asked since two of you are known criminals and you fit the description.”
You opened your mouth to protest but Kil’s left hand covered your lips before you could say anything.
“What about me? I don’t fit the description!” Franky complained.
“Cutty Flam, you know as well as I do that this vehicle is built using chop shop parts and I could have you investigated and this thing fucking impounded, so shut up.” He scoffed.
The Captain took a deep breath.
“I’m more than willing to have the night go that way, but I have a feeling that we could help each other out.”
You closed your lips behind Kil’s rough hand. What did he mean?
“Tashigi and I aren’t on a traffic detail. We’re on a stakeout.” The Captain pointed down the street to the building sitting at the left corner of the next block. It was a normal-looking brick building with a dive bar on its ground floor and what you assumed were apartments above it. You didn’t follow.
“We’ve received intel that a local gang leader who’s been causing us trouble for years runs an illegal gambling parlor on the upper floors of that building. The gambling, while illegal, isn’t our main concern. We have a tip that the man runs his drug distribution network out of that parlor. He receives the bulk shipments from outta town, and the dealers go there to get the product. Apparently there will be some high-profile dealers there tonight.”
Kil’s grip on your shoulder was now, officially, painful.
“I’d be willing to pretend like I didn’t see any of you tonight and let you all go on your way, if and only if, YOU help us with a little sting operation.” The Captain brought his right hand in the car window and pointed his index finger directly at you.
–
The four of you had gotten out of the car to stretch your legs and further discuss the plan with the Captain. You were all standing in a circle on the sidewalk. Franky was leaning his long body on Merry’s right side with his arms crossed. Kil stood to your left, closer than he normally did, and Kid leaned against the brick wall, arms crossed and looking down.
The Captain’s partner, Tashigi, turned out to be a lady cop. She was small compared to the Captain but had an intense gaze that you thought suited her position. Her long black hair was pulled into a tight, low bun and she wore round glasses. She stood next to the Captain dutifully in silence holding the clipboard she had passed him earlier.
“So, what would I have to do again?” You asked sheepishly. “Tashigi and I will put a wire on you in the cruiser,” he motioned one of his large hands at the cop car that sat mere feet behind you, “and you’ll go in under an alias we just picked up from one of their transmissions. You’ll be on the admittance list and let upstairs to the gambling parlor where your goal is to talk to the big boss and record him discussing his distribution network. That’s where your job ends. Once we have this intel on record, Tashigi and I can get a warrant to search the premises.”
“Why her?” Franky asked.
“Because no one in there knows who you are,” Tashigi responded, curtly.
“Why can’t you get a boy-in-blue to do your dirty work?” Kil asked, his voice deep with concern.
“The alias is time-sensitive. A female dealer told one of his goons that she might not be able to make it tonight and you’ll be posing as her. They don’t know what she looks like. If we wait to get an officer down here it might be too late.” The Captain explained.
“But I don’t know anything about her,” you responded.
“All you need to know is your distribution range,” he handed you a piece of paper with three neighborhoods in Brooklyn circled in highlighter pen. “This is your turf. Due to the nature of their work, they’ve never met you and they don’t know much about you. This is the perfect opportunity. Just don’t get too talkative.”
“No way.” Kil grunted, “This is too risky. You’re putting her in danger. What if the actual dealer shows up after she’s inside? Too much could go wrong.”
“Tashigi and I won’t let that happen. We’ll be watching and listening the whole time. You’ll be in and out in 20 minutes, I promise. But, I guess it’s your choice,” the Captain shrugged.
Everyone fell silent and looked at you. You were scared but the way the Captain was putting it, it didn’t seem like a big deal. You didn’t want Kid and Kil to get arrested because they saved you on the train. You’d probably get off easily but they’d likely serve time.
Kid looked up at you and matched your gaze. His face was stoic, not giving away any inclination that he wanted things to go one way or the other. He wanted you to choose.
You gulped and squared your shoulders.
“Alright. In and out in 20 minutes. We’ve got a show to get to.”
. . . ⇢ ˗ˏˋ 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐧 ࿐ྂ
Pairing: Killua Zoldyck X afab!Reader
Sypnosis: On one particular night, MC and Killua met outside for fresh air. They spent the night chatting as they watched the bright moon and sparkling stars.
Word Count: 802
Sitting on a bench was a [h/l] [h/c]-haired girl, staring at the moon. Its bright and reflected light shone down at your features. The round moon is very big and bright, and the stars around it winked at you. You slyly smiled, thinking about all the fun things that happened today.
"I hope Killua would have a nice sleep," you murmured to yourself.
Killua looked up to the ceiling with his arms wide open. He sighed and then sat up on his bed. Somehow, he cannot sleep. He looked over to the other side of the room, seeing Gon sleeping peacefully on his bed while snoring loudly. The ex-assassin smiled slightly to himself after he saw his best friend sleeping.
"I should go and get some fresh air," he murmured to himself as he got out of bed and exit the house.
Once he was outside, he took a deep breath and then inhaled the sweet night breeze. He smiled to himself as he walked further outside, once he neared the bench in the middle of the hilltop, he saw a silhouette of a familiar girl sitting on it. He narrowed his eyes to make sure it is really the girl he had a crush on.
"[Name]...?" Killua uttered out loud.
Hearing your name, you swiftly whipped your head behind to see the person who called you. There he stood, the gleaming moonlight shone down on his snow hair as it glistened in the dark. His sapphire orbs locked with you [e/c] ones.
"Hi Kil," you greeted him as he slightly blushed at the nickname. "What are you doing at this time of night?"
"I should be the one to ask you that. Why are you here by the way?"
"Me? I cannot sleep and decided to watch the moon and the stars. You?" you replied and motioned him to sit next to you.
"I also can't sleep, so I went out and get some fresh air," he walked towards the bench and occupied the vacant space.
"I see..."
You returned your gaze towards the dark sky and stayed quiet, Killua doing the same. Killua, who can't control his hand, decide to move on its own. It slowly moves towards your hand, and once he touched it, he put his palm on top of yours. You felt your heart beating hard and fast against your ribcage. The moment of silence continues until a bright shooting star came across the view.
"Ah! A shooting star!" You pointed at the sky where the path of the shooting star passed.
Killua chuckled at your cuteness and enthusiasm. "You sure have sharp eyesight."
"Thanks! Do you believe that if you saw a shooting star and wish on it, your wish will come true?"
"Hm... I don't think so."
"Well," you smiled with eyes closed. "I do."
You opened your eyes and then looked at him, he turned his attention to you and looked in confusion.
"You do? Well then, which of your wishes did come true?" he asked.
"All of them. And one of them is meeting you, being your close friend, and enjoying this moment talking with you today."
Killua blushed at your statement, he averted his eyes to avoid eye contact. But because of that, you took this as a chance and gave him a peck on his right cheek. And that made him blush deeper.
"And tonight's wish..."
The white-haired male looked back at you.
"I wished that we would spend the moment romantically under the moonlight," you didn't hesitate to place your head on his right shoulder.
"At first, Killua flinched a bit at the sudden contact, but then relaxes his muscles and rest his head on yours. At last, your hand entwined with his. The two of you stared at the, its light shone down at your features.
"I really like the way couples have a romantic night under the moonlight."
"Yeah, and here we are now."
You chuckled at Killua and he smiled. After a while, the two of you fell asleep together.
The Plea
After L'arj Mahnnnh landed on the Red Mafia's planet, the group is forced to make a choice: risk their lives to help him or let hundreds of people perish because of it. What will happen? Also available on Wattpad: https://www.wattpad.com/user/TheRedMafia Next Update: [Updated] Word Count: 3947
L’arj Mahnnnh sat on a couch in the living room, slowly sipping a cup of tea, courtesy of Mad. He set his black cowboy hat next to him before continuing to drink. Velvet stood in front of the archway that led to the rest of the mansion while holding Kil-layye Mo’ore in her right hand. Solana also blocked the way to the kitchen with her spear. The rest of the mafia sat on the other couch, eyes locked on the man in front of them. L’arj Mahnnnh let out a sigh and set the cup on the side table.
“Now, onto business,” he said, placing his hat back on, “I should catch you up on what I’ve been doing since our last meeting.”
“Or your whole life, considering the only thing we know about you is that you’ve tried to kill us on multiple occasions,” Velvet mumbled.
“If you insist, Velvet Bolton, daughter of Unor Bolton.”
“Oh dear gods.” L’arj Mahnnnh cleared his throat.
“It all started when I was born…”
“I wasn’t always the pride of my family. I had seven siblings, so I had to make a name for myself quickly. By the time I was 10 years of age, I had already begun climbing the ranks of my clan, the Mahnnnh Klahnnnh.”
“What a name.”
“Wait for it. L’arj Mahnnnh, how do you spell Man Klan?”
“M-A-H-N-N-N-H K-L-A-H-N-N-N-H.”
“Of course.”
“Guys, let the man tell his story.”
“Don’t you mean the-”
“Thorn.”
“I soon made it up the ranks until I reached Ti-Tahnnick Mahnnnh, our previous patriarch. It was a gruesome battle that lasted for days on end. After all, I am very strong. As predicted, I came out on top and was soon named the patriarch of my clan. I was ceremoniously granted Kil-layye Mo’ore, the ancestral sword that has been passed down through the patriarchs for generations.”
“...why is everyone looking at me? It was Maroon who stole the sword.”
“We all know they did that to get on your good side.” “That is not- Maroon, that’s not what happened.”
“Uh- right. Yeah.”
“See, told you.”
“You are literally holding a weapon, of course they’re going to agree with you.”
“L’arj Mahnnnh, please just continue.”
“Of course, robot. I soon became a successful bounty hunter, bringing fame and fortune to my family. After I married my wife, we had fourteen children. I was known and feared by those involved in illegal schemes. I even did a few jobs for your father, Velvet Bolton-”
“Don’t even start.”
“That’s what I was doing when I first met Margaret Pembrooke, daughter of Maximillian Buysee. A buyer was offering a large amount of money for the Custodio power gem. Little did I know that the mission would be my last. After being defeated by Margaret Pembrooke, daughter of Maximillian Buysee, I returned to my home in shame and defeat. After being saved by modern medicine and my faith, my wife divorced me. I was shunned from my clan. I was forced to beg for food and shelter every night and eventually turned to crime to make money. After weeks of living on the streets, I swore vengeance on the child who ruined my career.”
“L’arj Mahnnnh, I’m really sorry that happened-”
“Hush, Margaret Pembrooke, daughter of Maximillian Buysee. I don’t need your pity. I have been shamed enough.”
“I wasn’t-”
“I soon encountered you again, on my home planet, Pu Llannette, no less. I thought that I finally had the upper hand on you, but your robot assisted you in defeating me. Then you stole my family’s sacred sword, the last remnant I had of them. As you flew away, I awoke and swore that you would be my nemesis until the day I bested you.”
“Oh, I remember that mission.”
“Do you, Solana? I’d fucking hope so, considering you were the reason we were being attacked in the first place.”
“You were also being paranoid.”
“I’m not paranoid, I’m insightful.”
“Exactly what a paranoid person would say.”
“I was soon banished from Pu Llannette and forced to wander the universe. Eventually, I found a small start-up town on a newly discovered planet rich in natural mining resources. When I arrived, they were under attack from a horde of wild beasts. I slayed them all and was soon welcomed into the town. They made me their sheriff, and here I stand before you today.”
“So that’s why you’re wearing the cowboy hat.”
“Thorn, quiet.”
“Last week, the mining company of Veris arrived on our planet and has been tearing it open for its resources. We’ve lost twenty-seven people to accidents they’ve caused. Our mayor has tried to diplomatically solve the issue, but asked me to handle it from now on. I refuse to lose another home, so I ask you to assist me in expelling the Veris pests from my soil.”
The Mahogany Mansion’s living room was quiet as L’arj Mahnnnh took another sip of his tea. Both Maroon and Mad glanced towards Velvet, Mad’s screen blank. The teen narrowed her eyes at them.
“You two want to help him.” Maroon nodded.
“People are dying, Velvet,” Mad began, standing up, “We can’t just sit here and do nothing.”
“I mean, we can,” Solana chimed in, “But I agree, there’s really no risk for us. It’s not like the Veris Mining Company has great security.”
“And I can call…you know. I’m sure he’d love to help us mess with Veris,” Mad added. Velvet rolled their eyes.
“Don’t do that. L’arj Mahnnnh, where’s this planet?”
“Not too far, Velvet Bolton, daughter of-”
“You know, I’d really appreciate it if you didn’t say that every time you refer to me.”
“It’s respectful.”
“It’s annoying.”
“Mad, are you not concerned about Maroon going after…all of that?” Thorn asked. The droid turned to it.
“I am, partially. I want to do a full medical exam before we leave, but whatever magic L’arj Mahnnnh used seems to be working well.”
“Well, you must get started. We must leave as soon as possible,” L’arj Mahnnnh said, standing, “I will take my cup and wash it while you do so.”
“Oh, I can get it-”
“Nonsense, robot. Go do your medical check on Margaret Pembrooke, daughter of Maximillian Buysee.” L’arj Mahnnnh quickly disappeared into the kitchen, leaving the Red Mafia alone in the living room. Velvet looked at each of their teammates before sighing.
“You all really want to do this?” Maroon stood, but looked towards the floor.
“I have to make it up to him, Velvet,” they began quietly, “I’ve ruined his whole life. This is the least I can do.” The assassin narrowed their eyes at them.
“...okay, fine.”
Maroon stared at L’arj Mahnnnh’s ship as it landed next to the Umbrella. White rocks flew in various directions when the landing gear slammed into the ground. Once his door was lowering, Mad began opening theirs. Velvet attached Kil-layye Mo’ore to their mission belt on their uniform before leading the way out of the ship. A town sat in the distance, its brown walls surrounded by mining equipment. The humming from the machines echoed faintly in the youngest mafia member’s ears.
“There it is,” L’arj Mahnnnh stated, stopping next to Maroon, “My town, Vil-Idgh.” Velvet groaned.
“I swear to gods.”
“So what’s the plan, L’arj Mahnnnh?” Mad asked. He started forward, motioning for the Red Mafia to follow him.
“Margaret Pembrooke, daughter of Maximillian Buysee, you follow me. We will sabotage the mining equipment. The rest of you, split up and evacuate the citizens to the outskirts of the city. No more casualties.”
“Do you have a map?” Velvet asked. L’arj Mahnnnh nodded before reaching into a bag attached to his hip. He pulled out a small, rolled-up scroll and handed it to the teen. She quickly unrolled it and began scanning the page.
“Wow,” they mumbled, “This place is small.”
“We are a new city.”
“City is a generous descriptor.”
“Velvet, chill,” Solana mumbled. The assassin rolled her eyes but remained quiet.
“I’m going with L’arj Mahnnnh and Maroon,” Thorn stated. L’arj Mahnnnh looked down at him.
“No, Thorn Alviar, child of Eilon Hollis. This is a mission for the two of us alone.” Velvet looked up from the map and narrowed their eyes at him. Maroon looked towards Thorn, a look of confusion on their face.
“I thought your dad-” Thorn looked away, cutting them off. Solana rested an arm on the prince’s shoulder.
“It’s all good, Thorn. The two of us can go destroy some shit too.” The teen looked up at her and smirked.
“Hell yeah.”
“I guess that leaves me and Velvet as the other duo,” Mad said, glancing at the young assassin. Velvet nodded slightly, once again returning her eyes to the map.
“Alright, we’ll evacuate the citizens here,” they began, gesturing to a point on the map, “There’s no equipment over there. We’ll have to wait until they start destroying things to justify the evacuation-” They stepped onto the stone pathway of the city, where L’arj Mahnnnh immediately took a left.
“I will give you all deputy badges so they will trust you.”
“I can’t believe we’re becoming law enforcement. We were arrested less than 6 months ago,” Thorn joked, “Solana and Velvet are literally wanted criminals.”
“Shut the fuck up, Thorn,” Velvet said coldly. Solana, however, let out a chuckle.
“Yeah, it is pretty ironic.” L’arj Mahnnnh stopped suddenly, opening a door in front of him.
“Wait here.” The Red Mafia watched him enter the building before Velvet quickly turned to Maroon.
“Maroon, listen to me,” she started, “If L’arj Mahnnnh tries anything, let us know on your comms. I don’t trust him right now.”
“When do you ever trust people?” Solana muttered.
“Shut it. Do you understand, Maroon?” The teen nodded.
“I don’t think he’s going to, Velvet.”
“I have returned!” The door swung open again, nearly hitting Velvet in the face. The assassin jumped back, glaring at L’arj Mahnnnh. He gently handed a badge to each of the mafia members before turning to Maroon again.
“Are you ready, Margaret Pembrooke, daughter of Maximillian Buysee?” Maroon looked up at him. He had a smile on his face and a determined look in his eyes as he rested a hand on his gun.
“Yes.”
The machine exploded in front of them as a mushroom split it in half. L’arj Mahnnnh let out a laugh as various people ran out of the fire.
“There were people in there?” Maroon breathed. L’arj Mahnnnh shook his head.
“They are just robots, Margaret Pembrooke, daughter of Maximillian Buysee. Do not worry.” Maroon looked away from him and crossed their arms.
“...L’arj Mahnnnh, you know…that’s…not my name.” The man turned to look down at them.
“Sure it is. That is what your soul says.”
“What?”
“That is how I know your name. I read your soul.”
“But it’s not my name.” L’arj Mahnnnh frowned.
“I do not understand.” Maroon sighed and turned back to him.
“Margaret was the name I was given when I was born, but it’s not the one I use now. My name is Maroon.” The sheriff stared down at them for several seconds.
“I see. Alright, Maroon Pembrooke, daughter of Maximillian Buysee.” Maroon smiled up at him.
“Yeah, that works.”
“Put your hands up!” A voice shouted behind them. Maroon quickly turned around to see about a dozen or so Veris guards pointing their rifles straight at them.
“I should’ve known you’d cause trouble, L’arj Mahnnnh!” one of them shouted. L’arj Mahnnnh pulled out his gun.
“I refuse to stand by while you hurt the people of Vil-Idgh!”
“So you dragged a child into helping you?” Another guard shouted. Maroon raised their hands, causing L’arj Mahnnnh to let out another laugh.
“I suggest you back off, Veris!”
“We’re not scared of a teenager, L’arj-” Mushrooms quickly surrounded them, locking the guards in a cage. A large smile was plastered across L’arj Mahnnnh’s face as he turned towards Maroon. The guards shouted from the cage but L’arj Mahnnnh set a hand on Maroon’s shoulder.
“It won’t be long now, Maroon Pembrooke, daughter of Maximillian Buysee. Soon we will have them exactly where we want them.” A chill went down their spine as they looked up at him, but they remained quiet.
Rhyme plopped down on her sofa, a bowl of oranges in her arms. He picked up the remote and navigated through various channels before a bright red “Breaking News” alert popped up in the upper left corner. The thief raised an eyebrow and clicked on it.
“We’ve recently received word of an attack on mining equipment belonging to the Veris Mining Company around a small town called Vil-Idgh…am I reading that right?” A spokesperson began before glancing away from the camera. Rhyme began peeling the top orange in her bowl.
“Yeah, you’ve got it, Jude.”
“There’s no way that’s the name. That’s not a town name.”
“You’re being politically incorrect, Jude.”
“I- moving on,” Rhyme let out a chuckle before popping the first slice in her mouth, “It appears the sheriff of Vil-Idgh, a man named…fucking hell…L’arj Mahnnnh, is leading the assault, with his deputies evacuating the citizens. We go to live drone footage now.”
“You’re gonna get fired, Jude.”
“Shut up, Derek.” The screen cut away to an explosion on the outskirts of a city, debris flying off into the distance. It then cut to the road, where dozens of people were screaming and running. Someone stood in the middle of the road directing them…Mad?
“Oh you’ve got to be joking,” Rhyme breathed, quickly pulling out his phone. The phone rang a few times before the droid picked up.
“Hey Rhyme, this…isn’t a good time right now-” Mad’s robotic voice began, but the thief cut them off.
“‘Cause you’re fucking messing with Veris without me!” Mad was quiet for a moment.
“In my defence, I wanted to get you to come help. Velvet just-”
“Mad, what the actual fuck are you doing?” The voice of Velvet caused the teen to jump slightly but he quickly sighed.
“Rhyme called and-”
“Oh my gods, really? Give me the phone.” There was some movement on the other side of the line and it was quiet for a second.
“Rhyme, fuck off. We’re busy.” The thief’s eyes widened before she frowned.
“How does she know my name?” Mad sighed.
“Turns out they followed us to the roller rink.”
“Bolton, you fucking dick.”
“Are you that surprised?”
“Nah, but I kinda hoped you were better than that.”
“Sure Reuter, sure.” Rhyme frowned again.
“Don’t call me that.”
“Don’t call me Bolton.”
“No.”
“Then deal with it.”
“If you guys are done,” Mad interrupted, “Velvet’s right, we are kinda busy-”
“Destroying shit without me,” Rhyme countered, “Should’ve just invited me.” Velvet groaned. An explosion went off in the distance, causing the Red Mafia members to go silent.
“Why are you blowing shit up anyway?” the thief questioned, setting the phone down on her couch’s armrest.
“Helping out a…friend.”
“Friend is generous. We’re helping out someone who said Maroon was their fucking nemesis,” Velvet added. Rhyme suppressed a laugh.
“Now how did that happen?”
“Mad cares too much.” Rhyme raised an eyebrow.
“Do I want to know what that means?”
“We’re helping out a town who’s under the control of Veris,” Mad began, “Which Velvet thinks is ‘caring too much’.”
“No, it is.” Rhyme paused for a moment before smirking.
“Eh, I think Mad caring about people is kinda cute, actually.” It was quiet on the other end for a few seconds.
“Uh, you guys still there?”
“Yeah,” Mad stated. Velvet groaned.
“I’m on my way, Maroon. Tell L’arj Mahnnnh I said not to do anything stupid until I get there,” she muttered.
“What’s she talking about?” Rhyme questioned.
“Maroon just radioed saying they needed Velvet for their friend’s plan. She’s gone now, so.” Rhyme chuckled.
“Peace and quiet.” Mad also let out a robotic laugh.
“Yeah, I guess,” Mad paused, “So, what was that about me being cute?” Rhyme’s face went a light pink.
“Uh- just something I said to piss off Velvet. Yeah, annoying Velvet. Definitely.” Rhyme turned back to the TV. It was back to where the machinery was on fire, with Maroon and another man off to the side. A spaceship entered the planet’s atmosphere, catching their attention. Rhyme’s eyes widened.
“Shit.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Eliza’s there.”
“What? Where?”
“Looks like she’s landing by Maroon.”
“So that’s why he needs Velvet…” Mad’s voice trailed off, “I’ve gotta go help Velvet. If something else happens on the news, let me know?”
“I gotcha. Tell Velvet to not kill Eliza.” Mad was quiet for a moment.
“Yeah, I’ll do that. Bye, Rhyme.” The call ended and Rhyme looked up at the TV. Eliza Gracy stepped out of her ship, a face of annoyance on display.
That’s my job.
The ship’s door slowly lowered and slammed into the grey dirt. A woman stepped out, dressed in a tight light blue dress decorated with clouds. Velvet gripped her sword tightly behind a group of bushes, Mad behind her. A tall man helped Eliza off her ship as she glared daggers at L’arj Mahnnnh and Maroon.
“Don’t kill her,” Mad mumbled. Velvet rolled their eyes.
“Whatever.”
“Now what is going on here?” Eliza’s high-pitch voice echoed against the fallen machinery. L’arj Mahnnnh cleared his throat and stepped forward.
“Eliza Gracy, daughter of Adnan Gracy and CEO of the Veris Mining Company, I order you to dismiss your troops from my land and never return!” Eliza blinked a few times before laughing. Velvet groaned.
“Gods, her fucking laugh,” the teen hissed. Mad nodded their TV.
“Wait, how come her guards have guns? I thought it was illegal for civilians to-” “Aw, Mad thinks the law applies to rich people.”
“Listen very closely to me,” Eliza began, cracking her knuckles, “This land is uninhabited, therefore it-”
“Clearly it’s not,” Maroon interrupted.
“Fuck, shut up,” Velvet breathed, their hand shooting up to their comms, “Stop talking, Maroon.” Eliza stared at them.
“Now…where have I seen you before?” She wondered aloud, drawing a pistol from inside a silver handbag hanging on her shoulder. Velvet took a deep breath as Maroon froze.
“Mad, get ready.”
“For what?” The assassin didn’t answer.
“Oh well,” Eliza muttered, raising the weapon. Velvet jumped out of the bushes and threw Kil-layye Mo’ore towards her. The blade knocked the firearm to the ground before zooming back to the teen’s hand. Mad hastily followed, nearly tripping over a branch but joining L’arj Mahnnnh and Maroon. Eliza looked down at her fallen gun before locking eyes with the robot.
“That’s where I recognise you from,” she called out, “Mad, was it?” Mad’s screen went blank as Maroon looked up at it.
“Mad, you know her?”
“Know is a. Strong word.”
“Fuck off, Eliza!” Velvet shouted, raising her sword, “This land is taken.” The woman frowned, finally looking at the teen a metre or two in front of her.
“Velvet, Velvet, Velvet. You are so much better than this. What did you do to your poor hair? It was so-” She was cut off by Kil-layye Mo’ore slicing the side of her own hair. Eliza let out a shriek.
“There, now we match,” Velvet growled. L’arj Mahnnnh let out a loud laugh.
“You are no match, Veris! Surrender and leave now!” Eliza glared at him.
“Do you think two teenagers and a robot scare us? We have nearly half a thousand personnel arriving here shortly. I’ll offer you the same deal: surrender and leave now or face the authorities. And I’m not sure little miss Velvet here would survive that…interaction.”
“You won’t fucking-” Velvet threw the sword again, but Eliza bent over and picked up the gun. She fired a shot at the assassin that grazed their left arm. A mushroom quickly shot up in between them as Velvet stumbled back a metre or so.
“Velvet!” They shouted. Velvet bit the inside of her cheek as the pain throbbed.
“Fine!” the older teen summoned their sword back, “Take care of the soldiers!” Kil-layye Mo’ore flew towards the woman again as a bullet barely missed Velvet’s head. Mushrooms sprouted up around the whole field as Mad’s voice came through comms, asking for Solana and Thorn to join them. Velvet paused for a moment until pain erupted from her lower left leg. She quickly fell to the ground before bringing their sword up to block two more bullets.
“Velvet!” Mad called out. Maroon turned to her and their eyes widened. Another mushroom erupted as the two mafia members ran to their side, L’arj Mahnnnh not too far behind.
“I’m fine, it’s not too deep-” Velvet breathed, inhaling sharply as the pain spiked. Maroon looked them up and down before locking eyes with her. Their eyes seemed to glow a dark red, sending a chill down her spine. The younger teen turned away and raised a hand. Mushrooms sprouted on Eliza’s left leg, causing the woman to shriek and fall to the ground. The other soldiers laid on the ground useless as Maroon stepped forward.
“Maroon, wait!” Mad grabbed onto their right arm, stopping them in their tracks.
“Mad, careful, something’s wrong,” Velvet said, shooting up. L’arj Mahnnnh offered them a hand, which they took.
“Maroon, look at me.” Maroon shook their head, but Mad just repeated itself.
“Finish her, Maroon Pembrooke, daughter of Maximillian Buysee!” L’arj Mahnnnh called out. The mushrooms on Eliza’s leg slowly crept up, reaching her upper body. She continued to scream out for help, but none of her personnel could do anything but watch.
“Maroon, listen to me. Don’t kill her.”
“And why not, droid?” L’arj Mahnnnh shouted, “Let her pay for my twenty-seven fallen citizens.”
“Murder is not the answer!” Mad countered.
“It will avenge them!”
“But it won’t bring them back, L’arj Mahnnnh.” The mushroom growth slowed slightly, causing a small smile to appear on Mad’s screen.
“Maroon, everyone is okay. Just turn around and look at me.” Maroon shivered before slowly turning to look at their friend. Their eyes glowed a dark red as they shook. Mad quickly pulled them into a hug.
“What’s happening?” Solana’s voice shouted from behind. Velvet turned to see Thorn and her sprinting at them. Velvet stepped away from L’arj Mahnnnh and used Kil-layye Mo’ore to steady herself.
“There’s still time, Velvet Bolton, daughter of Unor Bolton. Throw Kil-layye Mo’ore and finish her off.”
“Velvet…” Mad began. Velvet sighed, turning to Mad.
“Nah, I’m good.” Maroon’s eyes were shut tight as they gripped the droid. Thorn ran straight past Velvet and L’arj Mahnnnh and grabbed Maroon from Mad. Solana stopped by Velvet and quickly steadied the teenager.
“Literally, I’m going to start making you wear body armour,” the elf muttered. Mad turned to them.
“You don’t already wear body armour?” it demanded. Velvet shrugged.
“Don’t gotta wear armour if you don’t plan on getting hit.” Solana stared at them for several seconds.
“We are just... not even going to start unpacking that right now.” Velvet shrugged before jumping onto Solana’s back.
“Come on, we’re leaving.”
“Wait-” Velvet sent a glare towards L’arj Mahnnnh.
“Most of Veris’s troops are incapacitated right now. Feel free to do what you want with them, but we’re done here.”
“Maroon passed out,” Thorn breathed, turning to Mad. The droid carefully picked them up before turning to Velvet.
“What…happened there?” The teen took a deep breath and sheathed her sword.
“I don’t know. Let’s focus on getting the metal, you know, out of my fucking leg. Then we’ll worry about whatever the fuck happened with Maroon. Deal?” Mad sighed.
“Right, yeah. Let’s go.”
