For @kijilinn since you got me started on watching new (to me!) Jason Isaacs content.
Since watching Sweetwater (2013) and Look Away (2018) over a couple of days, I've been reflecting on how Jason Isaacs' villains have changed over the years. While he certainly has played a variety of characters, and not all of them villains. Captain Hook from Peter Pan (2003) and Colonel Tavington from The Patriot (2000) have more in common with each other than with Dan from Look Away, Prophet Josiah from Sweetwater, and Dr. Volmer from A Cure for Wellness (2017), who likewise share several traits in common.
Hook and Tavington are, on the surface, a pair of campy, sword-wielding child killers, but if we look deeper, they are each singularly obsessed with one man (or boy) who has things they lack, and if we look deeper yet, they are both queer men whose peripheral relationship to society at large has left them anxious and resentful. With the last of these in mind, I'm tempted to throw Michael Ryan of Dangerous Lady (1995) into the mix even though he is not a villain. Of these three, Ryan is the one is most clearly attracted to men and hurt by them, though that is also true of Hook and Tavington to different degrees. Ryan was molested as a teenager by his mafia mentor, Tavington's father squandered the fortune he was to inherit, and Hook lost his hand in a fight with Peter Pan, all of which have redefined their connections to masculinity and to other men. They are all surrounded by men and unable to trust any of them. They all desire connection with and recognition from other men, particularly recognition as men. What allows for Hook's temporary triumph over Pan is that he has experienced adulthood and knows something of its pleasures as well as its pain, both things Pan will never know. Tavington could have ended Martin easily had he not insisted on making Martin acknowledge that he could. Ryan, having killed two of his lovers deliberately, is unwittingly killed by the man who infects him with AIDS. Ryan is definitely the outlier here as he is written to be sympathetic, despite his numerous crimes, while Hook and Tavington are fleshed out primarily through Isaacs' performance. He manages to make even flatly written characters feel human and even sympathetic.
As Hook, Tavington, and Ryan are all primarily interested in males, so their violence is primarily directed against them. Thus their relationships with men are very fraught, which is not the case in their relationships with women. In Ryan's case, the only consistently loving and somewhat healthy relationship he has is with his sister, the titular "dangerous lady" herself. Meanwhile, Hook and Tavington are completely indifferent to women (and girls) except where they can be used to manipulate the man/boy who is their true objects of desire. Intriguingly, Isaacs' straight villains also see women primarily as objects to manipulate for their own ends, even as a couple also believe they love women.
Dr. Volmer, Dr. Dan, and Prophet Josiah: oh, what can I say about these three? The first and most obvious commonality is that they are all fathers of daughters, and the second is that they all, to one degree or another, have incestuous desires for their daughters. The only one who attempts to act on that desire is Volmer, but Josiah's comment that Sarah "could teach [his daughter] how to fuck" hints that he might be interested in benefitting from that knowledge when she gets a little older. Dr. Dan--who, to his credit, is the only one of these three who is not a rapist--goes on "bonding dates" with his daughter maria and announces that he is giving her plastic surgery, of his choice, for her eighteenth birthday. He views women more as his artistic medium than as people. He left one of his twin daughters in the snow to die from exposure when she was born deformed, an act that haunts both the surviving girl and her mother. Like Volmer, Dan believes he loves his daughter, but what actually manifests in both cases is a selfish desire for control over women's bodies, medical and otherwise. At least Josiah is honest in his misogyny. When one of his men describes Sarah as a "female whore," he asks, "is there any other kind?" While I first interpreted this as implying that there are no sex workers who are not women--which has never been true, but that's a different point-- it could also imply that there are no women who are not sex workers. The second definitely fits Josiah's view of women generally. All of his converts are men except for his wives, and he has promised them wives of their own. That the women might not agree to being wives does not appear to have crossed his mind. Josiah is a collector of beautiful things: china, mahogany tables, and women, and, like the others, he sees little difference between them.
I wonder if it's a coincidence that Isaacs played the first three characters near the start of his screen career and the second group of three after he became a father himself. His first daughter with partner Emma Hewitt was born not long before filming on Peter Pan started; by the time he starred in Look Away, he had two daughters just a few years younger than his fictional one in that film. By then he was well established as a screen actor, and likely had greater ability to turn down roles that did not appeal to him. It's also possible that the new worldview parenthood brings about led him to rethink who the real villains in our society are. Even the most fantastical of these three, Dr. Volmer, exudes the kind of cold, cruel, selfish misogyny with which so many girls and women have to contend in their medical treatment even today. And it is by no means rare for a girl's first experience of misogyny to come from her own father.
I want to end this depressing meta by acknowledging that the first father Isaacs played after becoming one in real life is also, from my limited knowledge, the best. George Darling tries to suppress his natural gentleness to become the kind of stern, decisive, powerful Victorian father his sister urges him to become for his children's sake, but, fortunately, he fails. The best thing by far about this version of Peter Pan is its assertion that a father who can connect emotionally with daughters and sons alike is far better than one that cannot.

Shipper Tag Game!
I was tagged by: @theflagscene, thank you!
What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care about anymore?
I don't remember much about when I was a teenager, least of all shipping characters (this concept didn't occur to me until I started reading fanfiction and getting onto Tumblr). I just remember getting into fanfiction because of Supernatural/Marvel. So I guess ummm Loki/Darcy or Destiel.
2. Which ship would you consider your first one?
It would probably have been a y/n x supernatural character. Starting out, I was really into those for a while but besides that, I think...Destiel or Loki/Sigyn.
3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?
The only fanfiction (that I've finished and published) are for Hannigram (hannibal x will). It's a Phantom of the Opera AU and idk I think for a first fic, it was pretty good.
4. Do you remember the first couple you saw fanart of?
I honestly can't remember. My memory is pretty shit about some things.
5. Did you ever get into ship discord?
Nope. I think it's a waste of time. I'm very much someone who lets people ship what they want. If I see a ship I don't like, I just block the tag.
6. Did you used to have a NOTP or have any currently?
I am not a fan of the R*ylo ship. The pairing is whatever, but what I hate the most about it is the fact that the movies were completely changed to have those characters together. It was honestly shit.
7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?
Babe/Charlie. It would've been Phaya/Tharn but I am trying to stay away from spoilers and I don't want to accidentally come across one on ao3.
8. Currently have any OTPs?
*cracks knuckles* Hannigram, Phaya/Tharn, Hannigram, Babe/Charlie, Alan/Jeff, Jaeyoung/Sangwoo, Symbrock, White/Sean, Mickey/Ian, and Vegas/Pete. I'm sure there's more, but those are what I remember.
9. Is there any couple that to this day you are extremely mad about them not getting together?
I don't know...
10. Is there any ship that you used to dislike but now you think are kind of interesting?
I used to hate Eddie Gluskin (from Outlast Whistleblower) and he gets shipped with Waylon Park. A few years ago I saw fanart of them in a Cabin in the Woods AU and then I read the fic that was based off of that fanart and I was hooked.
11. Do you have a ship that in the past was considered 'normal' but now you would be canceled over?
I don't think the fandom has ever considered it 'normal' but Hannigram is hated by a huge portion of the Stranger Things fandom.
12. What's your favorite crack ship?
Idk if it's considered a crack ship, but SpaceDogs (Nigel from Charlie Countryman and Adam Raki from Adam). I just find them adorable.
13. Who is the couple you've read the most fanfics of?
Hannigram (this includes the Hannibal Extended Universe IYKYK) They are my OTP of OTPs.
14. What do most of your ships usually have in common?
Probably obsessiveness. The type that IRL would be very unhealthy, but is so delicious to read.
15. What do you absolutely hate in a ship?
Miscommunication. It's so annoying. Especially when one character refuses to hear the other's explanation or where one character hears the other talking to someone and they mishear/assume something and then leave before hearing the rest of it. And it leads to a misunderstanding and ugh. It gets annoying lol.

Thank you for introducing me to a movie that apparently has:
Jason Isaacs playing a 19th C Christian minister
Jason Aldean (yes THAT Jason Aldean)
January Jones shooting people (which seems like the only reasonable thing to do in a scenario that includes points 1 and 2)
What in the fuck? I must see this.
#sweetwater 2013#january jones#jason isaacs#wow#his milkshake brings all the conservative actors to the yard huh?

👀 can I get Pyramid Head with a litter of kittens?
Of course u can <3 <3 <3
Pyramid Head with a Litter of Kittens would Include:
Kittens? In my Silent Hill? It’s more likely than you think.
Pyramid Head is used to all sorts of creatures inhabiting the Otherworld, but he often finds them to be an annoyance and if they stand in his way he will strike them down, otherwise, he will simply ignore them.
But kittens? They’re so… small… and furry… and vulnerable. There are plenty of vulnerable things Pyramid Head has encountered, but these creatures are so tiny. They are unusual from his normal surroundings that it makes him take a pause for a moment.
He could almost certainly fit them all onto one of his hands if he tried. Though he has to be incredibly careful as to where he moves. He’s a big guy and normally he can just stomp and drag his blade around wherever he wants to, but these creatures are more helpless than he is used to. It makes him almost feel something… perhaps.
Now if you were with him, he might have a better sense of what to do with these things. He hardly knows how to take care of you, much less a litter of kittens.
He will leave the care and keeping of them to you, simply watching over your shoulder as he watches you feed them and make sure they’re safe and sound from any creatures that might come along.
If you ask nicely, he might allow you to bring them back to your shared room. Just so long as they don’t distract you from him, of course.
But that’s thrown out the window immediately as he spends the next few afternoons letting them crawl and play all over him as he just sits contently on the floor.
He is literally that dad that’s like “We’re not adopting an animal and that’s final” and then as soon as he gets them it’s like his new child. Except now Pyramid Head has many children and they are all furry and adorable.

I'm working on a story in which angels have no set appearances and choose their presented ethnicity based on personal preference and the needs of a situation. I have one character whose adopted parents are rebels and have been banished from angelic society while he remains behind, apprenticed (and essentially captive to) one of the higher-level angels. His mother presented as dark-skinned with natural black hair, while his father presented Caucasian. The younger character (1/2)
has decided to present an appearance that mingles his parents’ presentations, though he favors his mother’s darker skin and black hair. When his mentor realizes he’s imitating his rebel parents, he forbids the child from presenting as black, an order the child defies to stay true to his family. Does this work or does it sound too politicized? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. (2/2)
Black/White Mixed Angel, Forced to Not be Black Anymore
Well, it’s definitely politicized and I detect heavy notes of racism, assimilation, and erasure to address. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing to write. You should be properly prepared to cover that respectfully and address the problems with what he’s being forced to do. Being Black is his identity now, especially (if) he has lived on earth and has human experiences. Just taking it away ruptures who he is.
If this isn’t your intent to cover, which it doesn’t seem like, then you should avoid removing his race. If anything, the mentor could forbid him from looking like the mother/father without changing race at all. Black and mixed-race Black people do not all look the same. He could alter his features while still appearing visually Black.
His mother may have a widow’s peak, square jaw, and a particular shade of brown eyes. He may be forced to get rid of the widow’s peak, have darker eyes, a rounder face, etc. Repeat the same with the father’s inherited features. No longer has his father’s slightly bucked teeth and tall, slender body but now he’s got straight teeth and a more stout form.
I would keep the dark brown skin, by the way, and just alter the features to no longer reflect the parents. Because that’s the mentor’s concern, right? The rebel parents, and not the associated “race” of the angel.
