For @kijilinn since you got me started on watching new (to me!) Jason Isaacs content.
Since watching Sweetwater (2013) and Look Away (2018) over a couple of days, I've been reflecting on how Jason Isaacs' villains have changed over the years. While he certainly has played a variety of characters, and not all of them villains. Captain Hook from Peter Pan (2003) and Colonel Tavington from The Patriot (2000) have more in common with each other than with Dan from Look Away, Prophet Josiah from Sweetwater, and Dr. Volmer from A Cure for Wellness (2017), who likewise share several traits in common.
Hook and Tavington are, on the surface, a pair of campy, sword-wielding child killers, but if we look deeper, they are each singularly obsessed with one man (or boy) who has things they lack, and if we look deeper yet, they are both queer men whose peripheral relationship to society at large has left them anxious and resentful. With the last of these in mind, I'm tempted to throw Michael Ryan of Dangerous Lady (1995) into the mix even though he is not a villain. Of these three, Ryan is the one is most clearly attracted to men and hurt by them, though that is also true of Hook and Tavington to different degrees. Ryan was molested as a teenager by his mafia mentor, Tavington's father squandered the fortune he was to inherit, and Hook lost his hand in a fight with Peter Pan, all of which have redefined their connections to masculinity and to other men. They are all surrounded by men and unable to trust any of them. They all desire connection with and recognition from other men, particularly recognition as men. What allows for Hook's temporary triumph over Pan is that he has experienced adulthood and knows something of its pleasures as well as its pain, both things Pan will never know. Tavington could have ended Martin easily had he not insisted on making Martin acknowledge that he could. Ryan, having killed two of his lovers deliberately, is unwittingly killed by the man who infects him with AIDS. Ryan is definitely the outlier here as he is written to be sympathetic, despite his numerous crimes, while Hook and Tavington are fleshed out primarily through Isaacs' performance. He manages to make even flatly written characters feel human and even sympathetic.
As Hook, Tavington, and Ryan are all primarily interested in males, so their violence is primarily directed against them. Thus their relationships with men are very fraught, which is not the case in their relationships with women. In Ryan's case, the only consistently loving and somewhat healthy relationship he has is with his sister, the titular "dangerous lady" herself. Meanwhile, Hook and Tavington are completely indifferent to women (and girls) except where they can be used to manipulate the man/boy who is their true objects of desire. Intriguingly, Isaacs' straight villains also see women primarily as objects to manipulate for their own ends, even as a couple also believe they love women.
Dr. Volmer, Dr. Dan, and Prophet Josiah: oh, what can I say about these three? The first and most obvious commonality is that they are all fathers of daughters, and the second is that they all, to one degree or another, have incestuous desires for their daughters. The only one who attempts to act on that desire is Volmer, but Josiah's comment that Sarah "could teach [his daughter] how to fuck" hints that he might be interested in benefitting from that knowledge when she gets a little older. Dr. Dan--who, to his credit, is the only one of these three who is not a rapist--goes on "bonding dates" with his daughter maria and announces that he is giving her plastic surgery, of his choice, for her eighteenth birthday. He views women more as his artistic medium than as people. He left one of his twin daughters in the snow to die from exposure when she was born deformed, an act that haunts both the surviving girl and her mother. Like Volmer, Dan believes he loves his daughter, but what actually manifests in both cases is a selfish desire for control over women's bodies, medical and otherwise. At least Josiah is honest in his misogyny. When one of his men describes Sarah as a "female whore," he asks, "is there any other kind?" While I first interpreted this as implying that there are no sex workers who are not women--which has never been true, but that's a different point-- it could also imply that there are no women who are not sex workers. The second definitely fits Josiah's view of women generally. All of his converts are men except for his wives, and he has promised them wives of their own. That the women might not agree to being wives does not appear to have crossed his mind. Josiah is a collector of beautiful things: china, mahogany tables, and women, and, like the others, he sees little difference between them.
I wonder if it's a coincidence that Isaacs played the first three characters near the start of his screen career and the second group of three after he became a father himself. His first daughter with partner Emma Hewitt was born not long before filming on Peter Pan started; by the time he starred in Look Away, he had two daughters just a few years younger than his fictional one in that film. By then he was well established as a screen actor, and likely had greater ability to turn down roles that did not appeal to him. It's also possible that the new worldview parenthood brings about led him to rethink who the real villains in our society are. Even the most fantastical of these three, Dr. Volmer, exudes the kind of cold, cruel, selfish misogyny with which so many girls and women have to contend in their medical treatment even today. And it is by no means rare for a girl's first experience of misogyny to come from her own father.
I want to end this depressing meta by acknowledging that the first father Isaacs played after becoming one in real life is also, from my limited knowledge, the best. George Darling tries to suppress his natural gentleness to become the kind of stern, decisive, powerful Victorian father his sister urges him to become for his children's sake, but, fortunately, he fails. The best thing by far about this version of Peter Pan is its assertion that a father who can connect emotionally with daughters and sons alike is far better than one that cannot.

i love comics of bruce with children, any recs for batman stories involving him with children?
INDEED I DO. i have been building an entire thread of these comics for the last year on twitter. so i have a few:
Batman: War on Crime (1999) focuses on a boy called marcus who has a very similar backstory to bruce but goes down a different path, and his introspection on that. the art and writing make this one a must read!

Batman (1940) #423, the second story includes bruce's foster children, hank and jenny watkins.
The Brave & The Bold (1955) #93 is about bruce going on vacation and taking a break from batman (spoiler: that doesn't happen) and saving a boy called sean, twice!

at the end of Batman Gotham Knights (2000) #25 there's a short story called Last Call at McSurley's, which has a really sweet part about bruce saving a kidnapped little girl, but also some really fun gotham world building!
in Batman Secret Files (2018) #3 there's a story called Hunters, where bruce and oliver queen work together to save a little girl while being hunted down. one of my favourites!

in Bane: Conquest (2017) #12, bruce makes an appearance to save a baby. if you enjoy bane i'd suggest reading the whole comic for context, but for bruce it's just the last issue. the funniest part was the confirmation that every bat-vehicle seems to come with a built in bat-baby-car-seat!

Batman: The Dark Knight (2011) #26-27 features an entirely silent story of bruce saving a mother and daughter from human trafficking. it includes one of my favourite batman panels of all time.

trigger warnings for all violence against children in the next two:
Batman: The Ultimate Evil (1995) is about bruce, following in his mother's footsteps, dismantling a child prostitution ring as well as learning about gotham's rampant child abuse problem. there is also a really good novel about this story!
Batman: Night Cries (1992) is about bruce working on a series of murders where the common factor is the victims being child abusers.
Batman Adventures #26 is about bruce patrolling with a baby. my favourite part is where the criminals stopped doing crime and tried to offer advice on how to look after the baby. i love you gotham
in part 5 of batman legacy [Batman (1940) #534], bruce is in india trying to find a cure for a virus. while there, he meets a homeless boy who gets involved with their case. i don't particularly like the legacy storylines, so i would recommend reading this one on its own!

these are the ones that i can remember where bruce has important interactions with children, but i always say that the best batman stories have at least one panel of his saving children. so there are many more, but i hope you enjoy these!

This Inauguration Day, remember two things: You are not alone. And you have the power to help
Today, it's normal and expected to feel afraid and angry. So much has been said about Trump's plans and all the terrible things he wants to do. And many well-meaning voices have talked about these plans so often, they feel inevitable.
I want this post to serve as a history lesson for younger readers, and a reminder for old folks like me. The big lesson:Â We've faced exactly this situation before. We got out of it. And we have the power to do it again.
Here's what I mean:
You are not alone
Trump and the GOP want you to feel like everyone supports him now. They're acting like all Americans are full MAGA now and that the culture has shifted away from liberalism.
But that's not true. The man won a small popular vote victory on the back of millions of voters not showing up this time. Check the research; in most cases, the "huge shifts towards Trump" was really voters not showing up. Not good, of course, but not a sign of a mass conversion to MAGA.
And communities like this one still exist. We're not just here to be a community - more on that in a sec - but you're among 60,000 friends across America and internationally who aren't OK with this. And those groups exist in real life, too, likely near you.  Check them out, because being too online is part of the problem, too. And the Internet is where a lot of the non-stop wave of untrue predictions of doom come from.
Find your community of people who want to resist. Start here, and look around offline. But remember that there are millions just like you, who want to stop this.
You have the power to help
Let's get this out of the way: There will be elections. Elections we can win. Elections that matter.
Don't believe me? Come back tomorrow (Jan 21). There's an election in South Carolina - State House District 113 in North Charleston, Hanahan, and Summerville, to be exact. It's a safe Democratic seat, just the kind of seat a tyrant would prevent elections in. When the polls close tomorrow at 7, you'll see that we still have elections.
Then we have a chance to build Dem power in Iowa, maintain control of the Minnesota State Senate, and choose our candidates for two critical US House elections. Those elections will happen, too.
Later in the year, we've got to maintain control of the WI and PA Supreme Courts, win back the Virginia Governor's office, and flip state and local governments across America. Those elections will happen, too.
In 2017, we all got a lesson in government. Specifically, that state and local governments can do a lot to resist the President's agenda. These races are where the power is. And when you start winning, you build momentum and energy. Then you can win races you thought Democrats had no business winning.
And that's why this sub exists. To inform you of these elections, and give you the tools to help win them from anywhere.
You can help win all sorts of elections right now. I know. Today is hard, and it hurts. But a secret I've learned is that sitting in your misery, or yelling it into the void, rarely makes things better. The cure for sorrow is changing the situation. And you'll be amazed at how easily Trump folds on his big promises when he gets a little resistance.
You are not alone. You have the power to help. And we're right here with you.

doodles and a wip and a ramble about life recently under read more lolz

ok follow up on me not doing so great: a part of it has been because iâve been in a huge creative slump recently. pair that with the fact that iâve basically been operating with the mindset of âyou have to make one complete drawing a week or else youâre a failure PLUS you lose relevancy onlineâ & the fact that my mental hasnât been that great for non-art related reasons, me burning out was pretty inevitable.
yeah.
so thatâs why thereâs been a lack of art (though, âlack ofâ for me means no complete work for two days. i have akito syndrome, ik) lately⊠well, i told myself iâd stop trying to force drawings by just sitting on blank canvases and trying to draw or scrolling pinterest. i just⊠let myself not be productive for a bit. doomscroll reels or whatever. watch youtube for fun. that stuff. its been sorta nice. i actually did my homework and i havenât drawn at all besides when i wanted to. never though watching instagram reels would help my mental state, but hey!
anyways, i think a part of the creative slump has been caused by boredom with my current media of choice. like, digital art software is insanely powerful, duh. but ive been doing mostly this for years (literally! since 2017!) bar the work for studio art classes. i just never had what felt like âenough materialsâ to make stuff look good. but, i saw this really cool paper layering art the other day on pinterest and said âfuck it. you have cardstock and scissors, lets try something.â and, well, iâm making this little card thingy and really enjoying it so it worked!
i, like probably every artist or creative or every person ever, donât want to make something bad. so i hit this road block with traditional media oftentimes. iâm terrified to start coloring this thing, i can either use crayon or marker⊠or a limited selection of colored pencils. scary. but, well, if it looks shit iâll digitalize each of the paper parts, print them out, cut them out, and make a new version. itâll be okay (i write this more for my sake than anyone elseâs)
this piece isnât gonna be all of my solved but at least iâm feeling good about working on a project iâd consider âa complete art pieceâ and not feeling shit working on it so.
still havenât really improved the mental though, taking a break has helped but it canât cure the anxiety and the whole âfear of high school ending and still having achieved nothing.â but, you know, we live with it.
iâm happy with this paper thing though.
#purpleâs arts!#purple's arts!#fanart#sketchy.txt#cat posting#lil bit vent-y but itâs more abt my creative process tbh#and the creative slump iâve been in#other things i could talk about but whatever yk

Also preserved in our archive (Check out all of our long covid resources!)
BY Rhys Richmond
Research reports and detailed case studies from doctors and other providers can tell us a lot about Long COVID. But to understand the full scope of the disease and its impact, we must also listen to the experiences of patients who are suffering.
Todayâs post features a contribution from one of our readers, who details his experience with Long COVID and a preexisting illnessâin his case, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). As someone who suffers from both ME/CFS and Long COVID, Billy Hanlonâin his role as the director of advocacy and outreach at the Minnesota ME/CFS Allianceâalso advocates for advancing research into these conditions.
While researchers and clinicians have noted parallels between ME/CFS and Long COVID, as well as among other post-acute infection syndromes, much more research is needed to fill the knowledge gaps. Some researchers hypothesize that multi-organ damage wreaked by COVID-19 might explain how people with preexisting disease in certain organs (such as the heart, lung, liver, and kidney) might be at higher risk of severe COVID-19 affecting those same organs. Furthermore, research has linked an increased risk of developing post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (Long COVID) to having a preexisting medical condition prior to SARS-CoV-2 infection
In a sense, weâre beginning to see that COVID-19 infections might take advantage of less-than-perfect health to cause persistent symptoms. While other viruses have exhibited similar opportunistic patternsâfor example, influenza has been shown to cause more severe illness and hospitalizations in patients with obesity and heart diseaseâthe long-lasting and poorly understood manifestations of Long COVID merit particular attention. In Hanlonâs account below of his own struggles with ME/CFS and Long COVID, he also details how you may be able to help advocate for more research into both of these conditions.
A patientâs chronicle of life with ME/CFS and Long COVID Iâm a resident of Minneapolis, living with ME/CFS and Long COVID.
In 2017, at age 28, I suffered from an acute viral-like illness. Before long, I began experiencing severe neurological complications, such as difficulty with concentration and comprehension, as well as heart palpitations. The newfound, crushing exhaustion was unlike anything I had ever experienced. Physical or mental exertion seemed to exacerbate these complications, a phenomenon called post-exertional malaise (PEM), the cardinal symptom of ME/CFS and now Long COVID. In 2022, following a second COVID-19 infection, my symptoms worsened, leading to a Long COVID diagnosis.
As my personal experience can attest, ME/CFS and Long COVID are multi-systemic diseases involving pathologies of the brain, immune system, autonomic nervous system, and energy metabolism system. Many patients report that the onset of the illness (ME/CFS) is preceded by a viral infection, such as Epstein-Barr virus, H1N1 flu, or SARS-CoV-2.
Despite my best efforts, I have never recovered from ME/CFS and Long COVID. Thereâs no cure or FDA-approved treatment for these conditions, which affect people of every age and background. Very few American medical schools include ME/CFS and Long COVID care in their curricula, so only a handful of specialists in the country are trained to treat these diseases. As a result, many patients are disbelieved or discredited in medical settings, leaving essentially no system of care to lean on. I learned firsthand about the barriers and inequities faced by patients with ME/CFS and infection-associated chronic illnesses. Care for these conditions is vastly under-resourced, under-funded, under-studied, largely overlooked, and highly marginalized.
I anticipated these formative years of my adulthood to be marked by time spent with friends and family (my wife and nephews), new homes, job promotions, and vacations, but instead I find myself in a twilight world of this medical enigma. My life trajectory was headed one way, then viral illness has completely redirected it. I now spend the majority of my time horizontal, forging ahead as best as my body will permit, advocating with the will that still endures. ME/CFS and Long COVID rob futures and confine lives. Coming to terms with losing my career, my independence, and so many hopes and dreams has been as difficult as the chronic illness.
A lot more could be said about the profound loss Iâve felt professionally, physically, personally, and socially, but I instead want to focus on actionable items that anyone reading this can do to help support future care for this rapidly growing group of people affected by these illnesses.
First, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) recently announced a legislative proposal for The Long COVID Moonshot Act. This proposal is aptly titled as the advancements needed surely warrant a moonshotâthe term used when Congress marshals resources across the federal government to expedite progress. These infection-associated chronic illnesses have historically been left at the end of the queue for research funding.
You can reach out to your elected official and ask for their support on this proposal, which will help accelerate and prioritize research, diagnostics, and treatments. This proposal would provide $1 billion in mandatory funding per year for 10 years so that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) can respond to this crisis with the sense of urgency that it demands. Recently, Reps. Ilhan Omar (MN-05) and Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) have also introduced a companion bill for the Long COVID Moonshot in the House of Representatives.
Second, an ME/CFS Research Roadmap Report was approved in May by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). This is a step in the right direction toward clinical trials, but now we need the NIH to robustly fund it. You can contact your elected officials and ask that the NIH help make this a reality. These are also efforts that could pay dividends toward an ME/CFS platform clinical trial. This was recently recommended by Senior Investigator and Clinical Director Dr. Avindra Nath following the completion of the NIH ME/CFS Intramural Study. A platform trial or advancements in the Research Roadmap Report could potentially yield a lot of intel for Long COVID treatments and help inform the RECOVER Initiative, a research program by the NIH that aims to understand, diagnose, prevent, and treat Long COVID..
Lastly, Long COVID and ME/CFS were highlighted in May at the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Subcommittee FY25 NIH Hearing. During the hearing, NIH Director Dr. Monica Bertagnolli stated, â⊠I want to say about Long COVID and ME/CFSâwe are so grateful for our partnership with the people that are affected by this. They have taught us over the last two years what we needed to do. Now we just need to deliver for them.â Millions of people would agree. A crucial step would be to establish a dedicated Center at the NIH focused on Long COVID, ME/CFS, and infection-associated chronic conditions and illnesses.

âJust one suitcase?â Logan said, closing the side door.
You noded, wiping your eyes of the dust in the air and lack of sleep. You didnât think you were going to end up on some roadtrip with your ex. So of course you didnât bring much. It was just supposed to be a funeral and then a one time conversation. But now you were sitting in his passenger seat, watching a fly dart in and out of the car.
Logan never acknowledged the dress you were wearing from the day before, and you never acknowledged his suit he wore from the day before. There was that familiar understanding between the two of you. Still there, despite the way things had ended over a year ago. Those cold eyes stayed with Logan.
You could see them in the rear view mirror while he finished a repair on one of the truck's tires. Maybe he saw the same eyes looking back at him. It was hard to remember what they looked like before a heatless fire stole yours both away.
The motel sat to the right. The pale colors that painted brick walls seemed to crack underneath a silent weight. You thought you would still hear the static from your neighbors TV.
The truck rocked as he sat in the driver's seat. All that metal in his body was heavy. It was slowly killing him. Logan never talked about it. You only found out one night when Caliban told you over the phone, pleading for you to come back.
What must it feel like, for the thing that once made you invincible, be the thing that would one day kill you?
You had to force yourself to not dwell on being the one to find his dead body once the inevitable happened. Even with your work connections, you found there was no known cure for him. Didnât stop you from looking still.
âDidnât think Iâd enjoy the limousine?â You said.
He huffed, turning the engine on. âThat's for work purposes only.â
âAnd this isnât work?â
âNope. This is personal.â He pressed the gas pedal, taking you and the truck out of the rocky parking lot.
The air was hot. Salt rippled through the sky. You could taste it on your tongue. Competing motels marked both sides of the road. Signs pointed you in either direction. An employee stood by one of them, holding one advertising free car washes when you checked in. That made you chuckle imagining a freshly washed car driving back onto the street, dirt clinging to the water faster than it was cleaned.
The weather demanded filth in this small area. No one can make good money off something clean here.
It was quiet riding with him. It was always quiet with him. Logan kept his gaze forward, one hand on the steering wheel and the other in his lap. You caught the flask hiding between his thighs. This one looked older though, unlike the one from the diner yesterday. Scotts initials peeked out from the back of the metal. The same flask you remember stepping over when you found his body on the floor.
The dress was suffocating you all of a sudden. Instead of the static of the TV, you heard an old friend trying to get to Charles before he got to him.
You needed a distraction, like Logan needed the bottle. The notebook you fiddled with your hand flipped open as a breeze flew by. âChristopher Smith. 49. Assistant of Ceo David Fisherman who founded the nationwide bank Silver Well. 5â5. Fair skin. Brown Hair. Blue Eyes. Current residence, New York, New YorkâŠâ You shut the notebook. âWhat the hell were you doing driving a millionaire banker from New York around anyways?â
He looked at you and back at the road again. The sun was sending rays of light through the windshield, occasionally obstructing his view. âYouâre the private detective here. What do you think?â
âWell, we still havenât completely ruled out you two sleeping together.â
Logan rolled his eyes, holding back a smirk. âThen rule it out now.â
You grinned. âI think you were driving around a man already dead who knew that and had nothing left to lose.â
His eyebrows lifted, fingers tapping on the wheel. âImpressive.â
âNow, can you give me a clearer picture without the guessing games?â
Logan stopped at an empty stoplight. It was still green as he turned to face you. âLook. I didnât want to work for the fucker, but he wouldnât stop calling me and demanding the agency to hire me. Didnât know why, until a black van started following us around.â
The light flashed yellow and then red. âChris was a gambler. I'd take him every weekend to some new den or high profile client. Most of the time heâd come back with nothing. But one night, he came running into the car screaming at me to floor it. He had a suitcase of cash he said he won. Bullshit. Clearly stole it.â He gripped his flask.
âA black van chased us down all night. They blew one of my headlights and tires out with their guns. When we lost them and got back to his place, he promised that next time heâd give me a tip. Havenât heard from him since.â The light was green once again, but no one was around.
âHe couldnât give you any of the money he took from that night?â
Logan shook his head. âHe told me he needed it. I donât know what for.â
âMaybe he was in debt with someone far scarier than whoever was in that black van that night?â
âThatâs what I was thinking.â A honk from behind forced him to continue driving. âDid you pick anything else up from his pen other than a direction?â
You rolled down the window even further, preparing yourself. âNot yet. I could sense his body somewhere in Nevada. I could taste blood. Whoever he was scared of, got to him. Maybe his money too.â
âMy money.â Logan said. âAnd I sure as hell will be getting it back, like he promised.â
The words felt hollow coming from him. Like an empty pool during the summer. Since when did money become his sole motivation? You thought about Charles' medicine and the place that they lived.
âOur money.â You corrected, turning your face to the open window. âYou might want to close your ears. Iâm going to see if I can get a clearer picture of where he is and where we are going.â
You licked your lips, forming them in an oval shape. The air rushed out of them, a sharp whistle piercing the wind. It took you many years to master your mutant abilities. The glass surrounding the vehicle didnât crack around you. You knew you had your powers under control.
Little clouds began to form in the wind. Like someone had reached up into the sky and pulled them down to visit those who lived below. Only you could see them, unless you decided to show another. If the ear piercing noise wasnât enough to have Logan scrunched up in pain looking away, then maybe he was staring at the clouds starting to form a person.
The outline of Chris was limping away, carrying something in his hands. It looked like the briefcase Logan mentioned.
The fake Chris kept getting farther and farther away before the cloud disappeared, and your whistling had ended.
âAnything?â Logan said.
You turned to see blood dripping from his ears. It was like a punch in the gut. You knew heâd heal quickly, but it still hurt to see. âLooks like whoever shot at him, didnât kill him right away.â
Logan contemplated that, seemingly ignore the fresh crimson running down the side of his head.
Without thinking, like it was second nature, you put your hand against his rough cheek. Thumb wiping the blood away as it slid into his gray speckled beard.
He didnât move, eyes still on the road, hands gripping the steering reel harder than before, white popping from his knuckles. It looked like he stopped breathing. It felt like you did too.
The moment ended as quickly as it came. He grabbed your wrist, holding onto it for a second too long before pushing it back.
He didnât say anything as you two drove onward, finally entering the main highway. He sped up. You turned to look up at the clouds surfing an endless, blue sky.
~~~~~~~~
It was around 11pm when you stopped for gas.
The drive the rest of the day was spent in silence, except for the occasional directions you gave. He mumbled quick thank yous and you wondered if he even missed you all that much. Given how things had ended. But, this was just business to him. At least that's what he told you. But a more hopeful spirit bubbled within you. You quieted it with a swig of water.
Logan pulled out his worn out wallet. He cursed under his breath. âMy goddamn card isnât here. I swore I had it with me before I left this morning.â He ran his hand down his face leaving a fading red streak. âCharles sometimes likes to steal it if he gets the chance.â
You recalled the Professor getting sicker. Before he killed your teammates, your friends, it was noticeable. In the way he talked or acted. How he treated everyone, how he felt, then came back to himself. It only seemed to be getting worse.
You pulled out your own money. âDonât worry, I got it. We shouldnât be gone more than a week anyways.â
He took the offer, noting he still had some cash on him.
The gas station welcomed you with a punchet smell of old meats and sticky sugar.
The employee at the front counter swept behind the counter. No one else was there except for a large black car you noticed pulling into one of the parking spots at the very side of the building.
Logan was in the restroom while you checked out your items. A case of water, some alcohol you knew Logan was going to fill Scotts flask with, some snacks, an over cooked rotisserie chicken that was clearly the last on the heated shelf, and the gas pump.
As you put in your digits, the bell to the front door rang from behind you. You took a quick look back, not thinking anything of it. He tipped his cowboy hat toward you, winking. You noticed one eye was green and the other red. The man strolled to the alcohol section, shifting through cases of beer.
âA mutant?â You thought, grabbing your bag, waiting for Logan to come take the case of water to the truck. âHe looks like hes in his late 20s.â It was a sad reality. Mutants dying. 25 years since the last one was born.
But for some reason, your gut told you this man was not to be trusted. His eyes lingered on you the entire time he shopped. Something was off about the man in the cowboy hat and boots.
Logan finally appeared, the dried blood on his ears gone down the sink. You still felt terrible about the whole thing. Even though you knew he would heal, it still hurt to harm him. Even with years of harnessing your abilities, The Whistle was something you could never fully control. As soon as it left you, it was in the wind's hands.
âYour bathrooms smell like shit.â He told the cashier, taking the bottles of water in his rough hands.
The employee nodded, not wanting to meet Logan's stare. He had that way about him. As much as you wanted to get close to him, you wanted to be as far away from him as possible. He was both an unmovable object and a force you couldn't stop. It reminded you of all the things you loved about him. And all the things you didnât.
You pulled Logan by his arm, eyes on the man making his way to the front counter after you. âLets go.â
âYou okay?â He said once you got back to the truck. He still needed to fill it with gas.
âThat man back there,â You pointed behind you. âAnother one like us. But theres something off about him.â
Logan placed the water in the back seat next to your things. âWait here.â
He stood with his hand on his hip, filling the gas with the other as he kept an eye on the man in the cowboy hat and boots. As the man carried his beers out to his car, he sent a wave and smirked at the two of you.
Logan's eyebrows knitted together. His body stilled for just a second. He didnât even let the gas fill up half way before putting the pump back quickly, and hoping back into the car.
âGet the fuck down!â He shouted, turning the keys in the ignition.
âWhat-â Before you could ask the question, a bullet came soring through the back window, grazing the tip of your ear before it shot through the front windshield.
âFuck!â Logan pushed your head down and hit the gas. Your hand shot to your ear. The warm, crimson liquid dripped down your fingers and onto your dress. All you could think of in that moment of adrenaline was Jean gifting the dress to you for your birthday.
Logan took off into the night. Headlights shining almost blinding and weaving between cars that were going a normal speed limit. He kept looking in back of him. Back to the main road. Back to you. Curses left his mouth. You could barely hear anything past the ringing in your ears.
The crack in the windshield was small. The bullet ran clean through. But, sooner or later it would spread through the entire piece of glass. Like a spider building its web from one center point.
You could finally make out what he was saying as the fog in your head slowly faded. But that meant the adrenaline was wearing off, and you started to feel the sharp pain running along the left side of your head.
âDid it hit you anywhere else!?â Logan demanded. He was having a hard time focusing. He wished all his attention could be on you. But there was a car gaining speed from behind, and it didnât take mercy on people who cared. âPlease answer me!â
âIt grazed my ear.â You struggled to get the words out. Guards stood at the front of your tongue. Every time you opened your mouth, they stabbed their spears into whatever flesh they could reach. You sucked in a breath that felt like razors. âIt fucking hurts. But Iâll be okay.â
Logan was able to breath for a moment. He pulled himself together, maneuvering through the cars ahead of him. âJust hold on. Iâll lose the bastards.â
You didnât dare look up. You kept your head low, hoping the pain would subside soon. The throbbing in your skull grew. It beat with a hellish beat. Something was wrong with this bullet. Whatever had hit you, it was doing something to your body.
Flashes of memories, of the dead you found, the families you consoled, the friends you once had, raced through your mind. It was like an endless book of millions of words and pages turning before you. Faster and faster they went. The world spun. The blood was pumping through your ears, trying to break out of your skull.
He was calling your name by the time you snapped out of the feverish dream.
You looked up to find those warm and inviting eyes that you first saw when he showed you around the mansion for the first time.
Logan motioned to your ear. Your hand shook as you took it off the wound, noticing Logan was off to the side of the road now. No cars were around, not even the one that had chased you down. Logan must have felt that it was safe enough to stop. The clock read 1:19am.
âIâm sorry.â You whispered, holding back tears. You didnât know why that was the thing you said. You didnât know what you were thinking or saying at all.
He stared at you, lips trying to form words. But he decided not to say anything.
Logan took out a cloth from the first aid kit in his hands, and gently brought it to your ear. You could feel the sting of the antibiotics. But the pain had died down thankfully. The worst of it was over. You could see in the mirror where the bullet had taken a small piece of your ear off.
Panic shot through you. Your eyes widened. âWheres the pen?!â
âItâs alright.â He pointed to the pen sitting in one of the cup holders. There was blood on it. âJust focus on this. Focus on me.â
You looked down and frowned at the red stains on the black fabric. âJean bought me this dress.â
Logan's fingers found your chin, bringing your head back up to face him. You noticed your blood was on him too. Dotting his white shirt and gray and now red beard. He wiped at the dried blood on your cheek with this thumb, making small circles in the cold skin. Every move he made was gentle, caring, the epitome of warmth.
The tips of his fingers danced across your skin, and the painful throbbing slowly died down. You didnât know how long it took him to bandage and clean the wound, you never bothered to check the time.
The sun was rising when you woke up to Logan getting back onto the main highway. The Welcome to New Mexico sign greeted the two of you not even 30 minutes later.
August 5: The Ring (2002)
Naomi Watts murders a horse, which is very hard to get past. But then this is a Gore Verbinski movie, and he loves nothing more than killing animals horrifically onscreen, so it's to be expected.
#august horror#the ring 2002#gore verbinski#blehhh#I'm basing this on having seen exactly one other film by him#but it was a cure for wellness (2017)#which is only good for having brought mia goth and jason isaacs together
TEMERAIRE FIC RECS
I read no fic at all in May, as I was too busy devouring all nine Temeraire novels in a single month - and then spent a very happy June reading a fairly absurd amount of Temeraire fics. In honor of a Pride month well spent, here's a fic rec list!
(Divided up into categories - Laurence/Tharkay, Laurence/Napoleon, other ships, and gen)
WILLIAM LAURENCE/TENZING THARKAY
ley lines by malfaisant/@stanleyraymondkowalski (T, 14k, 2015) Amnesia era!Laurence sees Tharkay and it doesn't cure his amnesia; a renewed friendship tinged with loss follows
Tharkay makes it to Peking intact with the news of Napoleonâs imminent invasion of Russia. Which would be all well and good, except that Laurence isnât very intact himself.
which is like everything by sere (This_is_Sere) (G, 3k, 2024) Post-canon Laurence accidentally breaks Tharkay's heart a little, and put it back together in the sweetest way possible
A chance remark from Granby provokes an excess of feeling in Tharkay.
The Reward of Service by yunitsa/@pamphilia (T, 4k, 2016) A lovely post-canon get-together fic, where Granby puts his foot in it a little and realizations are had
âIt is no good asking me,â Laurence said at last, pushing the pattern-book away over breakfast, âI am not the oneââ Not the one who would be living with the result, he had been about to say. But they had hardly accepted Tharkayâs invitation as casual houseguests.
A Soft Dawn by corvile (G, 2k, 2015) A soft and sweet Tongues of Serpents-era fic, featuring accidental spooning, self-introspection, and maybe the most romantic hand-holding known to man
Upon thinking on this feeling of jealousy, Tharkay has done some rather clever intuitive leaps involving situations both real and imagined, and he's come to a rather curious conclusion: he's a little in love with William Laurence.
all flowers in time by lastwingedthing (E, 7k, 2017) A splendid post-canon get-together where it's Laurence who pines after an oblivious Tharkay, rather than the other way around. Also, sex!
The consolations of possession.
Ship's Gossip by Spatz/@cactusspatz (M, 6k, 2019) AU where Laurence takes up Tharkay's offer to become a privateer and Tharkay joins Laurence on the ship; Laurence learns some things about Tharkay, and then about himself
Laurence is beginning to enjoy life as a privateer - though he cannot figure out why Tharkay should still be sailing out with them - when Temeraire decides to ask him about sodomy.
WILLIAM LAURENCE/NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
Dearest William by WerewolvesAreReal/@werewolves-are-real (T, 23k, 2016) Laurence and Napoleon are pen pals! Riotously funny, until it's heartbreaking
Napoleon sends a letter to the upstart sea-captain who stole his dragon, Laurence sends one back, and a correspondence begins under the uneasy eye of the admiralty. When Laurence had admitted the matter to Granby his lieutenant exclaimed, âGod, does Boney want you drawn and quartered as a traitor?â which seems perfectly possible.
i sing of arms and the man by Jack_R (M, 21k, 2020) Ancient Rome AU (and really good dragon-related worldbuilding)! Laurence longs for the days of the Roman Republic, but Rome's new emperor is rather adept at persuasion
âYou think me a far worthier man than I am,â he says, then. âNo,â Napoleone says, softly, âI donât think I do at all.â
L'envoyé céleste triomphant de la Maladie. Antoine-Jean Gros (1813) by VerdetCadet/@verdet-cadet (G, 3k, 2023) A League of Dragons captured-by-Napoleon fic involving a rather appalling painting and Tharkay and Granby being the world's funniest wingmen (ha)
"Given what he has done with the barest civility on my part, I cannot think what he would do with the least encouragement." âOh, no?â said Granby innocently, a sentiment that provoked a raised eyebrow from Tharkay over his glass, and in Laurence, a strangeness in the pit of his stomach. Or: Napoleon is an enthusiastic patron of the arts. Laurence's best friends lovingly suss out his willingness to bone Napoleon for political gain and strategic expediency.
Ordinance of Fate by by WerewolvesAreReal/@werewolves-are-real (T, 13k (WIP), 2022) *slamming hand on table rythmically* soulmate AU soulmate AU soulmate AU soulmate AU
The name comes when he is 15, and Laurence hides it immediately. Then at the age of 22 Laurence reads a letter from an old shipmate who writes that âthe troops in Italy were routed by some new General of theirs, Napoleon Bonaparte-"
Doctrine on Worship by Kangoo/@youngster-monster (G, 6k, 2021) AU where Laurence becomes a priest instead of joining the Navy, and meets Temeraire anyway - but Temeraire's captain takes an interest in his dragon's new friend
âYou do not strike me as a man well versed in selfishness. Perhaps you ought to try it; you might find it easier to understand my presence then." In which Laurence made a different choice, a long time ago, which changes very little in the long run.
OTHER SHIPS
Tender Like a Bruise by VerdetCadet/@verdet-cadet (T, 5k, 2024) Granby/Little - Granby struggles with the shame and trauma of losing his arm; Augustine Little is there for him
It is not a good time to be short an arm, if there ever was such a thing. Granby has always prided himself on his competence and his easy good cheer. Now, at a stroke, he finds himself lacking in both.
revelry by WerewolvesAreReal/@werewolves-are-real (E, 2k, 2018) Tharkay/Laurence/Granby/Little - Post-canon Tharkay & Laurence invite Granby & Little over to visit, delightful and unabashedly voyueristic sexytimes ensue
Little suddenly turns away and throws himself down on the couch where Laurence previously sat, drunkenness making him stumble a little. He leans heavily against Tharkay, who doesn't mind, and tosses Granby a jaunty salute. âNow you must kiss him, John. I know how long you have wanted to; you will always regret it if you do not."
What comfort I can by VerdetCadet/@verdet-cadet (M, 5k, 2023) Laurence/Granby - Amnesiac!Laurence has suspicions about the nature of his relationship with Granby. Second in a two-part series, part one is also splendid! I just have a fatal weakness for the amnesia era ok
The truth of Laurence's treason comes out while Laurence is still aboard the Potentate. Laurence's half formed memories are just there enough for dangerous conjecture. Granby is there to offer what comfort he can.
That Dare Not Speak Its Name by WerewolvesAreReal/@werewolves-are-real (E, 11k (WIP), 2024) Laurence/Granby - Laurence covers for Little and Granby and discoveries are made. The dialogue and introspection are so very delicious I'm SO INVESTED AUGH
After an incriminating letter is discovered, Granby is caught out as an invert â and everyone knows his lover is another captain. Since the companion of a common Yellow Reaper would not be spared the noose, Laurence declares that it's him. Over time, he starts to wish it really were.
Uncharted by novembersmith/@novembersmith (E, 5k, 2009) Laurence/Granby/Tharkay - Laurence and Granby are together and Tharkay is mortified, until he's given quite good reason not to be
Tharkay had had the dubious pleasure of watching Laurence and Granby being blissfully in love for several weeks now.
Foibles by VerdetCadet/@verdet-cadet (M, 3k, 2023) Laurence/Tharkay and Laurence/Napoleon, sort of - Tharkay likes roleplaying and Laurence is not displeased by the role Tharkay takes on this time
Tharkay, faced with an inconvenience he was forced to endure or a problem his mind could not set aside, found his ease by simply Not Being Tharkay for a time.
An Alchemy of Character by PepperHoney (G, 7k, 2023) Tharkay/Granby - Tharkay and Granby compete for Laurence's affections, until they find a more fulfilling use of their time
Granby and Tharkay have been watching each other court Laurence to no avail for years now. It's something of a game between them, truly, one whose success they don't really believe in anymore. It takes a long journey aboard the Allegiance for them to realise--perhaps, if Laurence can't be reached, someone else can.
GEN
Smooth Water All Our Days by 20thcenturyvole (T, 37k, 2021) Technically Laurence/Tharkay (and they're lovely here) but much more gen-focused. Post-canon, Laurence, with his family's help, gets Temeraire's political career off the ground; meanwhile, Tharkay investigates a conspiracy. Also, parties!
Laurence desires nothing more than to retire to Tharkay's estate and help Temeraire get to Parliament, for what more could he want than a place in Britain with space enough for a dragon, and the company of a dear friend? But wars rarely end so neatly. Bellicose lords, Bourbon princes, errant heirs and shadowy forces threaten to undermine the very peace that Laurence and Temeraire fought to obtain, and ruin the happiness that Laurence was just beginning to glimpse.
remember (you deserve this) by WerewolvesAreReal/@werewolves-are-real (T, 10k, 2018) Laurence finds a different way to punish himself for the treason. Superb angst (mind the tags), and the last line of this fic d e s t r o y e d me
Laurence is pardoned for Temeraire's sake, but he manages to punish himself anyway.
Animal Husbandry by WerewolvesAreReal/@werewolves-are-real (G, 11k, 2017) Laurence is told that Temeraire accepted Dayes as his captain, but Laurence cannot forget the dragon he's lost.
Weeks after finding a dragon egg in the Amitieâs hold William Laurence reluctantly turns away and lets the Corps take Temeraire - but he doesnât return to the Navy. Heâs not an aviator, but somehow Laurence still ends up going down in history as the instigator behind the Great Dragon Rebellion of â06.
Captains by StrangerWithMyFace/@agentem (G, 2k, 2010) Perscitia (my beloved!!!) has a rough day; Wellington, in his roundabout way, is there to cheer her up. I am weak for Perscitia and Wellington bonding weak i say
Perscitia encounters two men at the London covert, and one of them is her captain.
Forays Into Human Sexuality (or whatever Laurence is doing) by WerewolvesAreReal/@werewolves-are-real (G, 1k, 2024) Laurence finds out that no, actually, not every man is secretly a repressed bisexual
Laurence says, âIt is wholly natural, anyway, with no women around.â
Someone left me this lovely prompt where Anakin is an alien and becomes obsessed with Obi-Wan, who is a scientist and is the only one who treats him well, and I based it on the movie Life (2017) and the video game; There's something in the ice. I hope to have it complete by next week. âš
Thanks to my friend @full-galaxy for helping me with the cover đ
Obi-Wan hated his job.
Don't get it wrong, when he decided to study to become a scientist, he dreamed of traveling to different places, researching their culture, plants, and animals, and maybe studying some rare disease and its possible cure.
He never expected that at 33 years old he would be in a bunker in the cold in the middle of the arctic, where he had already been researching snow and more snow for 2 months.
At first, he accepted this proposal from his colleagues since his boss wanted to thaw viruses or microorganisms from many years ago that rumors on the internet said had been buried in the Arctic and that no one had been able to discover them.
Obi-Wan joined the investigation, wanted to get out of his comfort zone, and thought that being in a place outside of the pollution of the crowded city would help him a lot to relax. In addition to the various studies he would do, they were going to keep him busy and maybe teach him something new.
But it was not like that; from the day they arrived until this moment, they have not found anything.
Their very wealthy boss, Palpatine, forbade them to leave until they found something that would make them rich and famous. In addition to the fact that the contract they signed warned them that if any of them left before the completion of the investigation, they would be fired and sanctioned with a large sum of money that no one in that place owned.
Obi-Wan decided to reread a book before going to sleep; maybe tomorrow they would be lucky and they could find something relevant to their research and no more snow.
When he was about to fall asleep, the omega felt a slight tremor throughout his room, opened his eyes in confusion, and looked everywhere. Everything was still in order; maybe it was his imagination and he dreamed it?
â âč â± â â° âč â
Obi-Wan doesn't know when he fell asleep but was woken up by Satine's voice; she sounded very excited.
"Obi-Wan! Wake up! You won't believe what happened last night!"
The omega got up alarmed seeing his friend, put his hands to his eyes, and tried to remove all traces of sleep he still had.
"Satine, it's still too early."
"Obi-Wan, a meteorite crashed last night near here, and we found life in it."
"What?"
"Yes, yes, it was very small, but there is life in it. At this moment, they are transferring it to this place to investigate it further."
Obi-Wan couldn't believe it; he even thought he was still asleep and dreaming. This was a godsend. They would finally leave this place!
The omega took one last look at his friend; Satine was not someone who joked or would lie about that kind of thing. Obi-Wan met the Beta on this trip; they both shared things in common, and it was easy to have a conversation with Satine without feeling judged.
Both were assigned to the furthest wing of the bunker; they slept in separate rooms, so Obi-Wan thought it would be a problem to befriend Satine since, from the first moment they introduced them, the Beta was serious and rigid.
But as the days went by, the two began to talk more and share more time together in the laboratory or in other places in the bunker. Their friendship began to blossom until they told each other everything that was going on in their heads and went everywhere together.
With Satine's help, Obi-Wan changed into more presentable clothes, brushing his face and teeth, and had something to eat when the main door of the bunker opened. Several researchers took the new organism to the laboratory, where they all gathered to receive instructions.
As if it were a relic, a piece of completely red stone was placed behind a glass room. That room was highly reinforced to study the organisms or plants in different ecosystems and prevent any microorganisms from coming out, harming everyone's health, or being damaged by the climatic conditions of the laboratory.
Some organisms need highly hot or cold climates to survive or develop. That room could recreate those climates.
No one was authorized to open that part of the laboratory except Palpatine; this was to avoid damaging what they were studying.
The following days, the entire bunker investigated the new acquisition. The organism found never ceased to amaze them, growing and growing in size.
On the first day, it was almost imperceptible to the human eye, but on day 10, it was the size of a thumb and was slimy, like a slug. It could also float in the air and was very elusive.
The organism moved around the glass room as if it were playing; it reminded Obi-Wan of a little boy; all that was missing was to hear his laughter.
The researchers took turns studying it; they didn't want to miss any details of the research and progress. Obi-Wan only chose to see the development of the organism; he knew that the other scientists subjected this being to very rigorous tests. The omega never liked that part of his job; he never liked to hurt another living being. No matter if he would be fired for not following orders, his conscience prevented him from doing so.
The omega sometimes told the alien about his day; that's how he named him Obi-Wan. He mentioned the type of tea he liked to drink and his favorite books. The organism, whenever it heard Obi-Wan's voice, stood still, listening to everything the omega told it. This excited Obi-Wan, since apart from Satine, he had no one else to talk about his private life. Due to the monotony of the days, he could not talk to anyone about new things because everything had already been told and everyone was following the same routine.
But the alien always came up to listen and never left Obi-Wan's side.
Obi-Wan also noticed that the organism showed a certain attachment to him, always following Obi-Wan in that glass room when the omega arrived at the laboratory, expectant of his every move.
At first, Obi-Wan thought it was because he was the only omega in the facility and the organism was attracted to his biology. This made him think that when he watched the other scientists interact with the alien, who was indifferent to them, the organism hardly paid attention to them and much less listened to them.Â
The weeks went by and the alien increased in size considerably; now it was the size of a 9-year-old human child, which was very terrifying to see that gray matter moving through the resigned area or floating in the air.
But everything changed when, one day, everyone in the lab screamedâsome surprised and others scared. The organism was now in the form of a 9-year-old human child.
He had deep blue eyes with blonde hair.
After a meeting with Palpatine about the progress, they decided to go ahead and try to get as much information as possible from the alien about his planet and if his inhabitants were dangerous. In addition to the medical advances that would be useful for humanity.
The surprises still followed when the boy spoke his language as if nothing had happened, calling himself; Anakin.
Hi there, I hope your day is going well! I have a question regarding the race of a character I'm hoping to use in a story I'm making, and would love to get your insights.
The story is a post-nuclear-fallout setting following two characters who are researching a cure for aggressive radiation poisoning and fighting the will of a malevolent and sentient slime-mold.  The characters dont have official names yet so I'll nickname them as Vessel and Scientist, and I'd like to focus on Vessel for this question specifically.Â
Vessel is a Black woman who was originally working as a scientist on a team tasked with experimentation on slime mold growing in radiated zones, which became sentient during her time working on it. She was ordered to kill it and was unsuccessful, and as a result died on-site. Her death was downplayed to keep the lab running, and she wakes up post-mortem very much not in the same zip code or in the same time. (The reason her nickname is Vessel is because the slime mold she attempted to kill resurrects her and is using her to try and return to the lab it's from to rejoin the mother culture (the slime mold is like a combo of the aliens from the movies Life(2017) and Venom(2018))).
The story itself is dealing with some themes like the exploitation of marginalized groups by wealthy militaristic powers, the idolization of western sciences and the consequences of doing so, destruction of the land for profit, the struggle of individual vs collective (man vs man), and the challenge of building community. Based on these themes and the setting, I'm drawn more-so to portraying BIPOC as my protagonists, as opposed to white characters, because BIPOC have largely been the driving force of any dramatic and radical change in our present society, and I'd like to spotlight them in my work as protagonists and not just Important Side Characters.Â
THE REASON I'm hesitant to commit to Vessel being Black has three branches,
1) the plot line i've designed would deal very heavily with depersonalization, the state-sanctioned poisoning and death of a Black woman, being used by a force beyond the characters will, and the internal/external struggle of essentially fighting yourself to maintain control of your Self/Body;Â
2) I'm not a Black person, and the plot for this character would deal with a lot of very heavy stuff that Black people experience every day,Â
3) and it feels very thematically/contextually similar to Haitian Zombi's, which I've been researching since seeing your responses discussing them compared to western zombies, which makes me hesitant to explore if it's getting into territory I shouldn't be interacting with, y'know? (The concept for this story was initially 'radiation zombies', so that's the background I'm pulling from as I'm making the story.)
I think she's a compelling character, intelligent, brave, resilient beyond belief (with a love interest in the Scientist as the story progresses), but if my concepts for her are crossing boundaries and perpetuating stereotypes (like stoic Black woman, not allowed to be soft, etc) I'd rather have a second pair of knowledgable eyes look it over before I commit with my whole chest.Â
I deeply appreciate any insights you may have, thank you for your time!
Hello! This does seem like a very intriguing story, and at least you caught where the problem points could be. So that's good!
I definitely say that if you want to get into symbolism similar to, but not OF, Haitian Zombis, you absolutely ABSOLUTELY need to do your research. Specifically on what things might be tied into closed practices, just so you know to avoid them. Research in general involving medical racism too, if you want to know how deep the rabbit hole gets with Black bodies and western experimentation, because there's plenty there too.
I would say since you sound aware of your intention and some of the concerns, go ahead, and I would highly, HIGHLY suggest a Black sensitivity reader. Someone needs to tell you if you've (literally) lost the plot, preferably before you release anything.
Cure Jello! Is Ready To Serve!"
BudĂ” Kanten, is one of the main Cures as well as the first boy to become a Pretty Cure in the A La Mode team. Â He is a first-year student at Ichigozaka Middle School. A very kindhearted boy who always helps those in need. Sometimes a little too chatty but always most trusted ally and friend. Heâs able to see the potential in his friends and is all about helping them discover their unique abilities and grow.
BudĂ”âs alter ego is Cure Jello, the Pretty Cure of motivation and empathy, and he is based on jellos and frogs. His catchphrases are âA leap of faith is all you need! Croak!â and âThere is no frog that can't become a prince! Croak!â
