Here’s a few more color samples I painted for my picture book dummy, Weird, But Good. I just recently learned what the word “microaggressions” meant. And I’ve realized that I was exposed to A LOT of microaggressions when I was young and throughout my childhood. I’ve always categorized these kind of comments as bullying or just plain ignorance, but it in no way made the comments less annoying and irritating to me, even as young as 6 years old. I knew what made me feel prejudiced against or just targeted for really dumb racial stereotypes. I guess this is also one of the reasons why I hope Weird, But Good turns into a real book. It’s a really gentle way of introducing these kinds of conversations with kids at earlier ages. Why is it insensitive to ask these types of questions. Is there a better way to ask about one’s background and ethnicity in a less annoying and more caring way?? All these things, I wish I had opportunities to talk about as a kid. But instead it just built up resentment towards people I labeled as idiots and bullies. There’s gotta be a better way...Anyone else have similar experiences or feelings as a kid or even as an adult?🤔 • • • #PandaErica #microaggressions #picturebook #kidlitart #POC #peopleofcolor #diversekids #kidsofcolor #painting #illustration #watercolor #gouache #coloredpencil #picturebookart https://www.instagram.com/p/By3eS-fH019/?igshid=1fpkofjg690ow

The people I meet keep making fun of how small my ponytail is, My edges are laid but I dont have any hang time, I see the power that hair has, Especially if it’s long and straight, I’ll just cut it all off since it wont ever be that way, I tried tracks and wigs but it’s not my own, When I am “skeet bald” theres no hair to make fun of, No worries, They’ll call me crazy but atleast my teeth blind them, Thats all they’ll see besides the hair on my brows, lip and sideburns,
I stop caring so much that I let my hair stand on top of my head, It grew full and tall like an alpine, never weeping. Why did I even care to begin with ?

NYC: This summer @WomenofColorHealingRetreats & @Studio301NYC are proud to present the first Free Kids of Color Yoga & Arts Summer Program in Brooklyn, New York City! 🗽🌞👧🏾👦🏾 Both of our organizations believe that art and yoga can provide children with the tools to strengthen and heal their spirits while preparing them to take on the world. Both Yoga & Art are meditative, allow creativity, promote wellness and inner peace for people of all ages. In fact, Free Kids of Color Yoga & Arts program was created out of the desire to provide a place for pure creativity, joy, and love to kids in the New York City area. As gentrification steadily climbs, and access to wellness spaces are not as accessible for kids of color, we believe it is important to have a sacred space dedicated to children living in underserved areas throughout New York City. This is a space for children of color no matter their racial background to bloom. From Filipino, to Black, to Latina, we have a space for everyone! Our yoga and arts program is led by instructors of various ethnic and racial backgrounds because we believe it is important for children of color to learn from a diverse group because representation matters. Free Kids of Color Yoga & Arts summer program is an exploration of fun, love, and joy which helps each child to develop and live healthy and peaceful lives. 🙌🏾 To find out more about the @womenofcolorhealingretreats organization please visit the website womenofcolorhealingretreats.com #supportblackart #free #kidsofcolor #yoga #art #nyc #summer #summeryouth #summer #wellness #creativity #givingback #community #diversity #brooklynarts #blackmoms #representationmatters

Apple Blossom Wovens Heirloom Fuchsia
Review of Apple Blossom Wovens Heirloom Fuchsia!
I posted this quick review on my Facebook page last week: Apple Blossom Wovens Heirloom Fuchsia came to me totally broken in and super floppy, which is exactly what I expected from a Tencel blend. Compared to the linen Heirloom that I hosted earlier, this wrap is much softer and more stretchy. I generally do not like Tencel in machine woven wraps, but this is an exception (as it seems all ABWs…

"I Don't Care" (1977) by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat (of Nate the Great fame), and illustrated by the brilliant Lillian Hoban, May be over 40 years old, but it's still by far one of the best kid's books for social-emotional learning that I've ever encountered. 📚📙📗 Beautifully child-centered, it follows the story of Jonathan, a little boy, as he loses a favourite possession and learns how to cope with that ... finding out that sometimes it's okay to have BIG FEELINGS about things and just let them out in order to let them pass. His feelings ring wholly true, and every child will understand when he says he doesn't just want a replacement because it's "not the same one you had." 💝 ⏺ ⏺ ⏺ #noodlenutsclassickidlit #noodlenutskidsbooks #idontcare #marjoriesharmat #lillianhoban #dellyearling #earlyreaders #earlyreader #frustration #anger #booksboutemotions #bigfeelings #teachingemotions #socialemotionallearning #socialemotionaldevelopment #weneeddiversebooks #blackkidsbooks #blackchildrensbooks #blackcharacters #charactersofcolor #kidsofcolor #diversebooksforkids #diversechildrensbooks #diversityandinclusion #inclusionmatters #representationmatters #representationinchildrensbooks #representationinkidlit #childrensclassics #classicchildrensbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B0_3DvbHmgf/?igshid=68m9zfuiye22

Happy Summery Friday! Wherever you are I hope you are enjoying some sunny weather. I finally sent out my first 5 query letters to literary agents earlier this week and even received my first lovely rejection letter. Hoping at the end of this query journey Weird, But Good will find a good home and representation that will do it justice. 🤩☀️ • • • #PandaErica #WeirdButGood #summer #kids #busstop #schoolkids #watercolor #painting #watercolor #coloredpencils #gouache #kidlitart #queryjourney #query#picturebook #diversekids #kidsofcolor #peopleofcolor https://www.instagram.com/p/BysL1_anP_J/?igshid=ixs9s5piaio4

Foray Into (Dye) Stripping
Before you read any further, this post is about stripping DYE from fabric! Trillium Snow in the snow. I just had a fun adventure with my first dye-stripping experience. I sent Pavo Textiles Trillium Halo to my friend Sarah at Blake’s BabyWearing Blog for a new look! Pavo Trillium Halo before stripping. Sarah did an AMAZING job, y’all! I sent Halo with some of the supplies I had purchased when I…

The original Nate the Great, by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat (1972) was the first detective story I ever loved. The writing was like nothing I'd encountered before (I now recognise it as a hilariously "noir" style common in adult detective stories), and the characters, like Nate himself and the wonderfully enigmatic Rosamond (whom I adored) kept my interest at all times. And Marc Simont's illustrations (later taken over by Martha Weston and Jody Wheeler) were SO PERFECT! With 29 Nate books in print, all the way up to 2019, this is a series worth introducing to your kids! So much great reading to be had! ⏺ ⏺ ⏺ ⏺ ⏺ #natethegreat #marjorieweinmansharmat #marcsimont #marthaweston #dellyearling #cowardmccannandgeoghegan #gpputnamssons #detectivestory #detectivestories #childrensmysterybooks #mysterybooksforkids #detectivebooksforkids #detectivebooks #curious #curiouskids #booknerd #read #mustread #readeveryday #earlyreaders #earlyreader #earlyreading #childrensbook #kidsofcolor #diversityinbooks #diversekidsbooks #readtoyourkids #childrenslit #childrensbookseries #bestofbookworms https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz8x0t_HHAl/?igshid=143w77jmycza1
