The thing about Fagin that always fascinates me is that apparently there's a real chance he was based on Isaac 'Ikey' Solomon: a real-life Victorian receiver of stolen goods and potential 'kidsman' (someone who trained up young children to steal for him) who also happened to be Jewish.

I'm unsure how accurate this is: but apparently the story goes that in reports Dickens read about Ikey it was claimed that most kidsmen in London were Jewish, so Dickens made Fagin Jewish to follow that line of thinking. (Which sounds a lot like a modern day author hearing a Fox News report say 'most crimes are caused by immigrants from Mexico' and, rather than think critically about this claim and challenge it, immediately make their unsympathetic crime boss villain a Mexican immigrant.) What will always fascinate me is that, even though Dickens was clearly vulnerable enough to the anti-semitic culture of the time to take that claim at face-value, he was also willing enough to change and listen that when he was called out on this shit he actually made changes to be better and do better.

(It's why, for all his flaws, I'm ultimately much more of a fan of Charles Dickens than, say, JK Rowling. Just to pick a random example.)

here's the thing about charles dickens. [discussion of his antisemitism, misogyny, and racism ahead.]

his last, unfinished novel, the mystery of edwin drood, features helena and neville landless, heroic and sympathetic south asian (sri lankan, specifically) characters, and the racism they endure in an english town is relevant to the plot to the point where neville ends up falsely accused of murder. in the wake of the indian rebellion of 1857, dickens applauded the english brutality against "that oriental race," and called for genocide.

fagin is called "the jew" 274 times in the first half of oliver twist. an article in the jewish chronicle asked why "jews alone should be excluded from the 'sympathizing heart' of this great author and powerful friend of the oppressed." at first, dickens dismissed this, and claimed he was just being accurate about london's criminal makeup. but he was moved enough by eliza davis's letters to him on the matter that he halted the printing of the latter half of oliver twist so he could change the text and remove the antisemitic language therein.

dickens was an abolitionist who despised chattel slavery in the united states, and called emancipation a "moral duty." dickens didn't think black americans were intelligent enough to vote, and he wrote an entire character in bleak house who is a joke to be disliked and mocked because she'd rather oversee charity missions to help children in africa than be a proper mother and tend to her own family at home in england.

speaking of one's own family at home in england, dickens smeared his wife, catherine hogarth, publicly so he could justify separating from her and taking up with a younger woman. catherine hogarth was likely mentally ill, likely living with postpartum depression. she was also an author in her own right and loved her family dearly. her reputation never recovered in her lifetime from the claims he made about her. in dickens's novels, time and time again, from nicholas nickleby to david copperfield to our mutual friend to the mystery of edwin drood, men who menace and take advantage of vulnerable women are portrayed as the worst kind of villains, deserving of whatever grisly ends come to them.

charles dickens was both privately and publicly a raging asshole in many ways and the world would be worse off without him, because he wrote for bourgeois, comfortable victorians, the very people who so often failed to "think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys." in the same breath that he calls agnes fleming, who opens oliver twist as an unwed mother dying in a workhouse, "weak and erring," he dares to add that "i do believe that the shade of that poor girl often hovers about that solemn nook-ay, though it is a church." he calculated jo's death to the page in bleak house for maximum effect. but when he wrote of the orphaned crossing-sweeper, "dead, your majesty. dead, my lords and gentlemen. dead, right reverends and wrong reverends of every order. dead, men and women, born with heavenly compassion in your hearts. and dying thus around us every day," people listened.

i dedicated years of my life to reading him and studying him and thinking about him and writing about him and his novels. now, i turn to condemn him; now, i turn to justify him. i wish i had a time machine so i could shake his hand. i wish i had a time machine so i could publicly debate him. i wish i had a time machine so i could break his nose.

charles dickens gives me courage and hope. charles dickens makes me want to tear my goddamn hair out. he is everything i despise and everything i love about the victorian age in one; the term "a man of his time" ought to have been invented for him. the leaps and bounds the victorians made for progress in the public good are only matched in greatness by the extremity of their atrocities against their "fellow-passengers" on this earth. the way we think about nearly every modern social ill can be traced back to the 19th century; the way we think about nearly every modern idea of social justice can be traced back to the 19th century. every last one is writ large and small in dickens's novels. he and his age are the greatest contradictions in human history and that's why i can't shut up about them, ever, even when i am exhausted by them, even when i am inspired by them, even when it was two centuries ago and it shouldn't matter anymore, but it does. it always will.

Finally! An excuse to talk about Dirk.

Name: Acantha Dirk Knifely, there's no secret reason why she doesn't use Acantha anymore. She just doesn't like it, the vibes are wrong.

Race: Hexblood, but mechanically half wood elf. (It's works fairly well, Minthara being racist felt extremely on point.)

Class: Circle of Spores Druid

Background: If you ask Dirk it's not much of a story, she's a perpetually unlucky kid from The Outer City. Her parents are dead, her boss is an asshole, her only friends are rats and she has to bribe them. And she can not catch a break. That's all there is too it.

But I feel like rambling.

Her mother escaped a druidic circle who had performed the rite of thorns, by making a deal with hag for her first born child. As a result Dirk isn't quite human. She normally just says she's a half elf and if anyone asks about the moldy splotches all over her skin she'll mumble something about it not being contagious and it being a Druid thing.

By all rights she should be a green hag by now. That usually happens on the thirteenth birthday.

But her parents sort of exploded, along with the little apothecary shop they owned.

Which resulted in Dirk going off the grid, she was a pretty forgettable child, so no one actually cared where she ended up, and as a result her hypothetical hag mom can not find her.

She ended up staying with one of her dad's card buddies, a small time fence, crook, kidsman and shyster named Druid Dave. (He's not a Druid, he's a wizard school drop out with a dip into warlock because he can not make good decisions.)

It was on the condition she could earn her keep, so Dirk did, making potions, picking pockets, hurling a healing spell someone's way for a gold piece or two, and using her wild shape to break and enter. (It's amazing the places a rat can get.)

She's been plying her trade as a petty thief and career criminal ever since. She was in the middle of running away from a job gone pear-shaped when she got picked up by mindflayers.

Personality: Dirk is a hard one to explain. Suspicious, awkward, jumpy. And just generally off-putting, despite being fairly perceptive and good at getting a handle on a situation she has a phenomenal knack for saying the wrong thing. Charisma is her dumpstat. Frankly, it should be lower than eight.

She's blunt and lacks any real idea of how to keep her thoughts to herself even when she knows she should. She tries most of the time.

She generally tries very hard to shut the hell up, avoid notice and let everyone else talk. Since when she does it it's always a disaster.

She's not enjoying being the main character. Dirk is spending her whole tadpole adventure one bad minute away from a panic attack.

She's used to stress though, does well as long as she has a clear cut goal she can usually power through.

Admittedly a lot of the constant dread in her life comes from being a little guy with one ho and no money, she's well into her adventure by now and very quickly realizing she's a force to be reckoned with, which tends to manifest of bursts of overconfident stupidity.

She's also quick to grab at anything that will give her power. All it took was the offer of Authoirty for her to start using those tadpoles.

She is finding shes better at the whole hero thing then she ever would have thought, that she might actually, like helping people, or at least people who remind her of her, kids, animals, goblins, and anyone getting kicked around by power structures. She's softer then shed like to be in that respect, sometimes you just need to let some gnomes die instead of starting a fight with all of Grymforge.

Romancing: Astarion, neither of them know what they're doing. This is just two idiots who have never had a healthy relationship in their life. Withers acknowledged this was an actual relationship before either of them did. She's still not quite sure what to call it.

Hobbies: Dirk is significantly better at Lanceboard then people expect on looking at her. She has a good head for strategy and remembering the moves.

She also really does enjoy alchemy. It's a work skill technically, but she likes it. She's spends most of her nights restocking health potions and messing with new recipes.

also known as danica saenz  ,  she works for ravenheart in a management position and has been by their side since ravenheart tore down the previous lords of the lazuli ward  (  the red vision  &  the white binder  )  one hundred and ten years ago  .  ravenheart quickly recognised her skill and experience within the underworld of diamond city  ,  and left a lot of the businesses under her direct care  .  danica’s alias comes from her treatment of those who overstep or disrespect the establishments’ workers  ,  many do not return home or return home half  -  mad  .  danica remains the only one who can see through ravenheart no matter the circumstances  ,  nor the words they speak  .  it is also important to note  ,  danica is devoted to ravenheart due to the fact they removed red vision from the playing field  ,  and she respects their strength for that enough to know they will keep her and the others safe  .

Embermane (  see  :  @/shinizenchi   )

also known as nova sallow  ,  she works for ravenheart in quite the position of favour  .  ravenheart’s speciality is blackmail  ,  and thus forcing others to do their bidding for them  ,  whilst in theory keeping their hands quite clear of nasty business  .  embermane is employed by them to gain information that would benefit the company  .  sometimes  ,  gathering secrets is all that is needed of her  ,  sometimes  ,  she may kill targets that step out of line  .  nova remains ravenheart’s favourite employee as she has gained quite the power over the lazuli ward due to what nova brings to them  .  

The Chained Fury

also known as niklas nygard  ,  he works for ravenheart for a key purpose  ,  protecting them and protecting the other seals at public events  .  many suppose due to the origin of how he came to stand with ravenheart that he is there against his own will and his freedom is limited  .  when ravenheart found him  ,  he was a hostage of another gang  ,  being held for ransom whilst his family were being threatened daily  .  ravenheart offered him a simple deal  :  freedom for loyalty  .  he was a perfect candidate for the seals  ,  as so many of them had come into ravenheart’s care after they had been threatened or treated poorly  ;  in a way  ,  ravenheart is a saviour or a protector for them  .  niklas has as much freedom as he desires  ,  and yet he chooses to stick alongside them as much as appropriate  .  if ravenheart was the type for emotion  ,  they may say that they considered him a true friend  ,  as he has seen their true form and keeps their secrets from the others  ,  as far as necessary  .

Black Moth

also known as renée dubois  ,  she works for ravenheart as an assassin with a preference for poison and  /  or arson  .  she is rarely directly utilised except in the chance that a target breaks the terms of agreement or ravenheart themself is being threatened by an adversary  .  renée is the daughter of one of the most powerful women in the city  ,  the prism of the diamond ward  ,  however she shirked responsibility and expectations by estranging herself from her mother and beginning the life where she felt that she fit in  .  ravenheart was eager to take her on when it was discovered of her magical capability  .

The Silent Bell   &&  The Martyred Muse

also known as celeste and theresa   ,  they are prodigies of the group  ,  garnering respect and power for the seals despite their age  .  their previous master was cruel  ,  and they were too intelligent for him and he did not enjoy being questioned  .  for that  “  crime  “  their tongues were removed so that they may not be able to offer their opinions again  .  they work for ravenheart in a smaller capacity than others  ,  keeping allies and gaining new ones for them  .  they are emissaries in their entirety  ,  and work extensively with mr  .  black  ,  helping him sell of his wares for the best profit and to the highest bidders  .  

The Abbess

also known as maria ógenia  ,  she works for ravenheart in a management position  ,  supporting danica with her own work as well as managing her own establishments  .  maria was a gutterling before ravenheart found her on the streets  ,  near death from poor treatment from her kidsman  .  maria is the youngest of the seven seals by a great many years  ,  and is the one ravenheart favours almost as a mother would a child  ,  ensuring that she is protected more heavily than most  ,  especially as her kidsman never officially relinquished her to ravenheart  .
