When Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of US arrived in Kenya for big game hunting in 1909 , he was advised to use Kiboko (whip) to the maximum since it was the only language Africans understood to stay orderly.

Edgar Beacher Bronson, an American big game hunter who had just finished his safari in Kenya before the arrival of Roosevelt, wrote: "Roosevelt will have to close his eyes and accustom himself to occasional severe floggings of the African wapagazi (porters), for without it no safari could be held together a fortnight; discipline would soon disappear and that quickly be followed by open revolt,"

Kiboko is a flexible, but stiff straight whip cut out of hippo hide, that when used on human skin it draws blood or raises welts double its own diameter. To justify its use on Africans Bronson claimed a black man's skin has a far coaser fibre than the white man's, and therefore endures and recovers from punishment and wounds no white man could survive. He went on to cite his own experience in whipping African porters, claiming that most of them never held a grudge for whipping. You order him to lie down " he goes without a murmur and uncomplaining until the flogging is finished, and often springs to his feet, draws himself up and salutes his bwana."

While Roosevelt had accepted the services of Somali servants based on Sir William McMillan's farm at Kilimambogo, his chosen head of Safari Mr. J. Cunninghame was greatly opposed to the idea and instead proposed the Waswahili. His reason being that the Waswahili could easily take in viboko's without complaining unlike the Somali who could not stand a blow, a kick or a Kiboko. Any man who treated them badly was pretty certain to end up with a knife sticking in his ribs sooner or later. Bronson also narrated how one day he punched his Somali askari in the face for passing him the wrong bullets. To his surprise the poor man while grinning in pain drew himself up and gravely said: " You are my Bwana and my father, good!"

Acccording to him he knew the response was not genuine, and it was only a matter of days, weeks or months before he ended up with a knife in his ribs. He only felt safe after his train pulled out of Nairobi on his way to America.

For a very long time(Oh, Is over) physical violence against African servants was an integral and characteristic part of European domination in Kenya, and was part of a peculiar pattern of race relations.

De esta manera, logró convertir la estancia en un lienzo en el que combinar pinturas, dividiéndola en dos partes diferentes, una de diversos colores y formas y otra, completamente blanca para resaltar el caós de la primera. Según palabras del propio autor: quiso “mostrar que la gente puede apreciar cualquier estilo de graffiti, incluso el más básico, y que sólo es una cuestión de puntos de vista”. Esta habitación del hotel Sala se encuentra alojada en una antigua mina y ha sido acondicionada recientemente para el turismo de la zona. La mina estuvo activa en la ciudad de Västmanland desde el siglo XIV hasta 1908. Ahora es un bonito hotel donde se organizan conciertos y eventos de todo tipo. En una de las salas (en la imagen) se puede incluso pernoctar. En marzo de 2008, la mina fue visitada por la princesa heredera Victoria de Suecia, que dejó su firma en la mina como su padre, Carlos XVI Gustavo de Suecia, había hecho anteriormente. Es la única habitación que tiene una cama King redonda. También dispone en el cuarto de baño de azulejos azules y amarillos con un lavabo de pedestal de estilo francés. Este bello hotel, ubicado en las tierras vírgenes de Laponia, se inspira en la naturaleza y espíritu lapón. Aunque las cabañas y los iglús se encuentran en mitad de la naturaleza, se puede ir cómodamente andando hacia los restaurantes y diversos servicios de los que dispone el complejo. Te invitamos a formar parte de la Séptima Carrera A Correr Familia

De nueva cuenta el Zoológico Guadalajara será la sede para la carrera de casa para la cual queremos invitarte con el gusto de siempre. Pero para disfrutar al máximo tenemos algunas recomendaciones.

Correr es una actividad física que requiere preparación antes, durante y después de hacerla. Y es que no es cuestión de apresurar el paso y listo, es necesario que el cuerpo reciba el alimento justo y los estiramientos adecuados para no sufrir alguna lesión mientras se ejercita.

Hay que dormir ocho horas o más de ser posible, el descanso es básico para aquellos que van a ejercitarse de forma intensa al día siguiente. Además hay que estar bien hidratado antes de la competencia, hay que tratar de tomar mucha agua.

La hidratación es básica, antes de la competencia se recomienda que se con agua, durante la competencia es necesario que la rehidratación sea con **Gatorade, o con sueros, líquidos necesarios para que el cuerpo recupere los líquidos que perdió durante la carrera. Es necesario que antes de comenzar a correr los participantes hagan calentamiento previo y mucha elasticidad para evitar desgarres o algún tirón muscular.

Durante la carrera se sugiere llevar un ritmo constante, empezar lento y al final de la carrera apretar el paso para cerrar de manera intensa. Una vez terminada la carrera hay que volver a estirarse y caminar, no detener el paso, para que el ácido láctico no se acumule tanto y comer muy bien, carnes y proteínas y descansar lo más que se pueda. Si ya decidiste iniciar en el mundo del atletismo, este es una buena opción para comenzar, porque te puedes inscribir desde la comodidad de tu casa con sólo llamar por teléfono o enviar un correo.

Además la carrera se divide por categorías, lo que propicia que si no eres un atleta consumado, puedas inscribirte en una menos fuerte.

Antes de salir a correr

Lo primero y más importante es saber que nunca debemos salir a correr sin haber ingerido antes algún alimento. Si lo hacemos, lo más probable es que síntomas como la fatiga o la debilidad de las piernas aparezcan rápidamente impidiéndonos seguir adelante con nuestro entrenamiento. Del mismo modo, tampoco es bueno empezar nuestra tanda de ejercicios después de habernos pegado un auténtico atracón. Hay que llenar nuestro 'depósito' pero en su justa medida. ¿Dónde está el punto intermedio? No es el mismo para todos, pero seguro que poco a poco vais conociendo vuestro cuerpo y termináis por amoldaros a sus necesidades.

Aun así, para empezar, se recomienda ingerir hidratos de carbono de absorción lenta que nos aporten entre 150 y 200 calorías dependiendo siempre del peso corporal de cada uno. Al digerirse, estas biomoléculas van proporcionando glucosa al cuerpo, la fuente de energía de las células, por lo que cualquier tipo de pasta, el arroz, las legumbres, los cereales integrales e incluso las patatas, siempre que se consuman troceada o en puré, son el mejor combustible para nuestro organismo.

Durante la carrera

Hay muchos corredores que prefieren saltarse este paso, pero si vamos a realizar una tanda de entrenamiento larga o a afrontar una carrera de larga distancia, no está de más pensar también en la posibilidad de avituallarnos a mitad de ejercicio. Aquí entrarían en acción los carbohidratos de absorción rápida. Estos se encuentran, por ejemplo, en las barritas de cereales, fáciles de llevar con nosotros para evitar posibles desfallecimientos.

Después de la carrera

Es muy recomendable comer frutas como plátano (que también es muy efectivo durante el entrenamiento), uvas, pomelo o manzana, ya sea al natural o en batido. Los frutos secos como las nueces, las pasas o las almendras también están permitidos. ¡Ah! y sí, después de correr no está de más que os peguéis un capricho con chocolate, siempre en su justa medida, claro. Todo ello ayudará al músculo en su recuperación.

Además no hay que olvidarse de los líquidos. Beber agua en abundancia o bebidas ricas en carbohidratos servirá para hidratarnos, recuperar las sales minerales perdidas por el sudor y limpiará el organismo de los desechos que genera el ejercicio.

SERENGETİ’DE BİZİM ÇOCUKLAR, TANZANYA

Sabah kahvaltımızdan sonra son safarimiz için araçlarımıza biniyoruz. Bu günkü safari rotamız, Serengeti Ulusal Parkı. Serengeti Ulusal Parkı’nı özellikle belgesel dizilere meraklı olanlardan tanımıyan yoktur diye düşünüyorum. Uçsuz bucaksız topraklar manasına gelen Serengeti Ulusal Parkı, Tanzanya’daki en geniş alana sahip park. Bu park aynı zamanda, 1,5 milyon nyumbu ve 250,000 zebranın yıllık göçü ile de ünlü. Park alanı, 14,763 km2yi kaplamakta. Biz ancak 150 km2lik bölümünü gezebiliyoruz.

Serengeti’nin girişinde iki adet zürafa, alımlı yürüyüşleri ile bizi savanaya hoş geldiniz dercesine karşılıyorlar. Bize o kadar yaklaşıyorlar ki nerede ise dokunacağız. Güzel gözlerini ve o romantik bakışlarını daha yakından görmek şansını yakalıyoruz. İnanın bu doğal güzelliğin içinde, bu güzel hayvanlara hayran olmamak elde değil. 

Yolumuzun üzerinde hareket halinde olan nyumbular görüyoruz. O kadar çoklar ki bundan evvelki safari parklarında bu kadar çok nyumbu ya da wild beest ve pundamilia ya da zebra görmedik.

Oradalarda sayıları ifade etmek için binlerce kelimesini kullanırken, burada yüz binlerce demek çok doğru bir tanım. Bazen savananın üzerinde çok geniş bir alanı kaplayan siyah büyük bir leke gibi dururlarken, bazen de kilometrelerce uzun bir hat oluşturuyorlar. Onlar yolun bir tarafından diğer tarafına geçerken eğer nezaket gösterip durarak yol verirseniz, kim bilir ne kadar beklersiniz? Çünkü yürüyüş kolunun başını ve sonunu görmenize imkan yok. Biz de biraz bekleyip manzarayı gördükten sonra, onların arasından geçerek yolumuza devam ediyoruz.

MUHTEŞEM İŞBİRLİĞİ

Nyumbu, zebra, ve gazellerin beraberliğini ve işbirliğini burada da görüyoruz. Bu işbirliğinde zebralar, önden gidiyor ve yüksek otları yiyorlar. Arkalarından gelen nyumbular, orta boy otlarla besleniyor ve son olarak da gazeller, kısa otları yiyorlar. Vahşi gibi görünen bu doğada her şeyin, dengeyi sağlamak ve boşlukları doldurmak gibi bir görevi var. Bunu ancak buraya gelip gördükten sonra anlayabiliyoruz. Televizyonda seyretmek başka, çıplak gözle izlemek bambaşka. Bu nyumbuları bir türlü anlayamadım. İneğe benzetiyorum olmuyor, geyiğe benzetiyorum gene olmuyor. Çok değişik hayvanlar. Sakalları onlara farklı bir hava veriyor. Sanki hayvanlar aleminin bilgeleri gibi duruyorlar. Zaten hareketlerinde de bir bilmişlik ve asalet var.

Burada çok kuş çeşidi görüyoruz. İşte karşıda ağacın tepesinde muhteşem cüssesi ile bir taimzog ya da vulture yani akbaba. Etrafı dikkatle gözetliyor. Gözetleme alanında biz de varız.

KRAL VE KRALİÇE

İşte simba yani arslanlar. Bir tepeyi kendilerine siper ederek dinleniyor. O kadar yakınlarındayız ki birisi tedirgin oluyor ve doğruluyor. Diğerleri, patilerini kıvırarak kedilerin klasik olduğu kadar, sevimli sırt üstü yatışı ile umursamaksızın uyuyorlar. Arslan, doğada farklı bir hayvan; emin olun her halinden bölgenin kral ve kraliçesi. Ondan çok çok iri ve güçlü hayvanlar var, ama o çok başka. Yani kısaca, kral doğulur, sonradan olunmaz. Bu da arslana yakışıyor. Bir gün arslanın soyu tükenirse, dünya kralını kaybeder ve kesinlikle yerine koyamaz.

Serengeti, çok büyük bir alan olduğundan, arslanları biraz seyrettikten sonra yolumuza devam ediyoruz. Sol tarafımızdaki manzara, insanın nefeslerini kesecek kadar güzel. İlerlerde bir yere yağmur yağıyor ve bulutlarla yağmurun savanada yarattıkları tablo muhteşem. Yol boyu hayvanlara mı yoksa bu muhteşem manzaraya mı bakacağız? Şaşkınlık içerisindeyiz. Bir oraya, bir buraya.

Bir gölcüğün önünden geçiyoruz. Suyun içi kiboko ya da hippototom yani su aygırı ile dolu. Gölcük, çok küçük olduğu için, ancak birbirlerine sokularak suyun içinde kalabiliyorlar. Gölcüğün etrafı, beyaz renkli kuşlarla çevrili.

GÖKLERİN KRALI

Biz su aygırlarını büyük bir heyecanla seyrederken, tam o sırada yol üzerinde büyük bir kartalın bir leşi gagaladığını fark ediyoruz. O da bizi fark ediyor ve havalanıyor; tam yanımızdan geçerken fotoğraf makinemin düğmesine basıyorum. Böylece kartalı da çok ama çok yakından görmüş oluyoruz. Yıldırım gibi, bize sürtünürcesine uzaklaşıp gidiyor. Ne kadar görkemli bir hayvan. Yerin kralı arslansa, göğün kralı kuşkusuz kartal. Bu iki hayvan her halleri ile asil.

ÇİRKİN KRAL

Yüzbinlerce nyumbu, onbinlerce zebra ve gazel. Her taraf onlarla dolu. Bu arada gözümüze uzaklardan bir fisi ya da spottedhyeana yani benekli sırtlan takılıyor. Bize doğru yaklaşıyor ve yolu geçerek yolun öbür tarafına ulaşıyor. Bize yaklaşırken ve yolu geçerken aramızda bir ya da iki metre mesafe olsa bile hiç umursamıyor. Çok çirkin ve korkunç görünüşlü bir yaratık. Hiç bu kadar yakından, doğal ortamda bir sırtlan görmemiştim. Hayvanlar aleminde en çirkin kral ve kraliçe yarışması yapılsa, sırtlan kesinlikle kral ve kraliçe olur. Karşıda ise antiloplar var. Önümüzden geçen sırtlan, nereden çıktığı belli olmayan bir ikinci sırtlanla buluşuyor. Otların arasından antilopları gözlemeye başlıyorlar. Biz ise bir av sahnesini görebileceğimiz umudu ile heyecanlıyız. Beklemeye başlıyoruz. Antilop sayısı çok ve iki sırtlan bu işi yapmak için sayı olarak yeterli değil. Biraz bekliyorlar, ama gelen başka sırtlan olmayınca oradan ayrılıyorlar. Biz de yolumuza devam ediyoruz.

İlerde bir zürafayı bir ağacın en yüksek dallarından filizleri yerken görüyoruz. Yukarı doğru uzattığı boynuyla daha da uzun görünüyor.

Yol kenarında gördüğümüz bir fil ve impala kafatası iskeleti ürkütücü. Bunlar oraya bilerek konulmuş ama yine de çarpıcı bir dekor yaratmış.

Kuşlar, kuşlar, o kadar çok ve çeşitliler ki, büyüklü küçüklü, rengarenkler, ama çok sevimliler. Hele bir cins küçük sarı bir kuş var ki, çok güzel ve becerikli. Bunları ağaçlara yuvalarını yaparken görmelisiniz. O kadar çalışkan ve becerikliler ki görülecek manzara. Yuvalarını büyük bir ustalıkla ve çok süratli bir şekilde sepet örer gibi dokuyorlar. Gerçekten sanatkar ve güzel kuşlar.

Bu arada birçok fil de görüyoruz. Fil görmek, artık olağan hadiselerden birisi. Buradaki fark, yavru bir filin annesinin ayakları altında dolaşması. Ne kadar da sevimli. İnsanın hemen araçtan inip bu yavruyu sevesi geliyor. Annesi ne yapar bilinmez.

ÖĞLE YEMEĞİ

Karnımızın acıktığını hissetmeye başlıyoruz ve doğru piknik yerine. İçkilerimiz ve kumanyalarımız yanımızda. Hava sıcak, ama içkilerimiz aracın soğutucusunda soğumuş durumdalar. Piknik yerine geldiğimizde, hemen kumanyalarımızı açıp yemeğimizi yemeğe başlıyoruz. Sanmayın ki piknik yaptığımız alan safari yapılan yerin dışında ve vahşi hayvanlardan tecrit edilmiş durumda. Piknik yeri, düzlük savanalarda biraz daha yüksekçe bir yer, ama vahşi hayvanlar kol geziyor. Hemen yakınınızda bir ya da birkaç fili görmek mümkün. İmpalalar yanınıza kadar sokuluyorlar. Ne de olsa hepsi yemek kokusu alıyorlar. Enteresan bir durum.

Etrafta dolanan değişik bir hayvan cinsi var. Ağaçlarda dolaşıyorlar. Bazen de yere iniyorlar. Bunlar, hem sincaba hem de büyük bir fareye benziyorlar, ama değiller. Bunlara yerel lisanda pinbi deniyor. Çok sevimliler ve bazıları insana o kadar alışmış ki; yanına iyice yaklaşıp fotoğraf çekme şansı veriyorlar. O kadar da güzel poz veriyorlar ki, sanki bilerek yapıyorlar.

ÜRKÜTÜCÜ

Beni en şaşırtan ve ürküten, tuvalete girdiğimde ve kafamı biraz kaldırıp baktığımda tam başımın üzerinde, aşağı doğru sarkmış olarak gördüğüm çok sayıdaki yarasa oluyor. Hiç beklemediğim ve başımı kaldırınca bir anda gördüğüm bu manzaradan ne yalan söyleyeyim etkilendim. Sonra da kendime güldüm.

Yemeklerimizi yiyip, karnımızı doyuruyoruz. Safarinin ikinci safhasına devam. Yolumuza devam ediyoruz. En çok Serengeti’den umuyorduk, ama şu ana kadar chui ya da leoparı göremedik ve bizim beş büyüğü (bigfive) tamamlama ihtimali de gittikçe zayıflıyor. Tek şansımız öğleden sonrası. Yine de umudumuzu tüketmedik ve heyecanlıyız.

Yol üzerinde karıncaların yaptığı yuvaları, yani termitleri görüyoruz. Tek tek olanlarının yanında çoklu olanları da var. Çok büyükler. Çok olanlar neredeyse bir tepe gibi ve geniş bir alanı kaplıyorlar. Tek olan birisinin önünden geçerken değişik bir hayvan görüyoruz. Termitlerin etrafında dolanıyor ve daha sonra da uzaklaşıyor. Bu karınca yiyen değil, ama ne olduğunu bilmiyoruz. Şoför ismini söylüyor, ama şimdi hatırlayamıyorum. Manzara o kadar çabuk değişiyor ki, hafızada tutmak ve hepsini hatırlamak çok zor. Özellikle çok ama çok çeşitli hayvan türleri görüyoruz; bunların isimlerini hatırlayıp burada yazmak imkansız.

İşte bir aslan ailesi daha. Ben beş adet arslan sayabiliyorum. Çalı ve ağaçların arasından yamaca doğru tırmanıyorlar. Eminim ki bu arslan ailesi, aşağıda ve yolun yakınında idiler, biz geç kalmasa idik, onları daha yakından görme şansımız olacaktı. Sonunda da ormanının sıklığı içerisinde gözden kayboluyorlar ve biz de yolumuza devam ediyoruz.

DOĞA HARİKASI

Beş yüz metre gitmemiş idik ki; sol tarafımızda, bize uzak olmayan bir mesafede iki adet duma ya da çıta görüyoruz. Bu hayvanlar çok güzeller. Duruşları ve görünüşleri bir doğa harikası. O kadar zarif bir görüntüleri var ki, insan hayran kalıyor. Aynı zamanda da iyi bir avcılar. En büyük özellikleri de süratleri. Zaten vücut yapılarına bakıldığında bunu anlamamak mümkün değil. Bunlar, doğanın şaheseri. Bakmaya doyamıyoruz, ama ayrılmak durumundayız. Bizim aradığımız, leopar. Onu hava kararmadan bulmamız lazım, yoksa çok geç olur.

Safariye devam. Daha bir kilometre gitmemiştik ki sol tarafımızda bize elli metre kadar uzaklıktaki ağaçlıklı bir tepedeki kayanın üzerinde iki adet arslan uyuyor. Birisi erkek, birisi dişi. Erkek olan yüzü bize dönük, pençeleri çenesini altında uyuyor. Ancak o kadar güzel bir konumdalar ki, oraya doğru yaklaşan her türlü yaratığı rahatlıkla görebilirler. Erkek arslanda, yolu tam görebilecek ve kontrol altında tutabilecek şekilde yatmış. Zaten biz durunca gözlerini şöyle bir açıyor ve bize doğru bakıyor; herhalde bunlar turist ve tehlikesizler deyip uykuya ve poz vermeye devam ediyor. Dişi ise sırt üstü klasik yatış şekliyle yatmış ve pençelerini de kıvırmış. Hiç kıpırdamadan uyuyor. Belli ki erkeğine güveniyor. Bir dişi ve bir erkek olarak dünyanın en büyük kedisini bu kadar yakından, doğal ortam ve davranışlarında görmek büyük bir şans ve heyecan verici.

Ben bunları anlatırken sanmayın ki boşluklar arasında herhangi bir hayvan yok. Her taraf impala, gazel, nyumbu, zebra, deve kuşu ve kuş dolu. Her yerde karşımıza çıkıyorlar. Artık onları görmek son derece olağan.

LEOPARI GÖRMEDEN Mİ GİDECEĞİZ?

Leoparı görmek konusunda artık ümitlerimiz tükenmek üzere. Serengeti’de zamana karşı yarışıyoruz. En ufak bir haber yok. Görme ihtimalimiz, gittikçe azalıyor. Ancak bunların içerisindeki kanga ya da helmetedguineafowl yani beç kuşları parlak benekli tüyleri ile gösterişli bir şekilde gruplar halinde dolaşıyorlar.

İşte ne olduysa bu anda oluyor. Birden aracın telsizinden heyecanlı ve yüksek tonda sesler gelmeye başlıyor. Tüm araçlar birbirlerini ikaz ediyorlar. Karşı telsizdekiler telaşlı ve heyecanlı, buna bizim şoförü de ekleyince olağanüstü bir şeyler olduğunu anlıyoruz. Şoföre soruyoruz, ama eliyle bizi durdurarak pür dikkat telsizdeki konuşmaları dinliyor ve bazı sorular soruyor. Konuşma bitince, bir ağaçta uyuyan iki adet leopar görüldüğünü söylüyor. Tüm araçlar, oraya doğru gidiyormuş. Şoförümüz hemen gaza basıyor ve süratleniyoruz. Bu süratle araç, toprak yolda daha da zıplıyor. Kimin umurunda?

NİHAYET

Sonunda leoparların üzerinde uyuduğu ağacın önüne geliyoruz. Bu, tek bir tik ağacı. Ağaçta iki adet leopar, mışıl mışıl uyuyorlar. Herkes, onlara bakıyor. Zaman zaman pozisyonlarını değiştiriyorlar, ama uykuya devam ediyorlar. Biz, son derece mutluyuz. Çünkü beş büyüğü tamamlıyoruz. Keyfimiz yerinde. Şoförümüz de mutlu. Hem tüm hayvanları bize göstererek görevini başarı ile tamamlıyor, hem de daha önemlisi büyük bir bahşişi hak ediyor. Çok şanslıyız, çünkü son anda leoparı yakalıyoruz. Buraya birkaç defa gelip de leoparı göremeyenlerin hikayesini dinledikten sonra, bu olay daha da önem kazanıyor.

SAFARİNİN SONU

Bu Afrika seyahatimizdeki safari turumuz tamamlanıyor. Artık lodge’muza gidip güzel bir geceyi hak ediyoruz. Son derece rahat, temiz ve güzel bir lodge’da kalıyoruz. Özellikle sabahleyin kalkıp balkonumuzun hemen birkaç metre ilerisinde en az elli adet impalayı görmek hem şaşırtıcı ve çok güzel. Bizi uğurlamak için gelmiş gibiler. Onlara veda ediyor ve tüm selamlarımızı Afrika savanalarında yaşayan hayvanlara iletmelerini istiyoruz.

AH ŞU BİZİM ÇOCUKLAR

Safari yapmanın her gezginin gezi listesinde olması gerektiğini düşünüyorum. Son derece eğlenceli ve doyurucu bir gezi. Hayvanları doğal ortamlarında, serbest dolaşırken ve hür olarak görmek bambaşka bir duygu. Hür olmanın güzelliğini, büyüklüğünü ve her canlı için vazgeçilmez bir unsur olduğunu, burada daha iyi anlıyoruz.

Daha önce belgesellerde gördüğümüz vahşi hayvanları, burada çok yakınımızda doğal hayatlarında görmek heyecan verici. Daha evvel tanımadığımız hayvanları artık tanıyoruz. Türkiye’ye döndükten sonra, belgeselleri izlerken ilk başlarda bizim arslan, bizim kaplan, bizim fil, bizim çıta ve bizim leopar demeğe başladık. Böyle olmadı sonraları bizim çocuklar demek, moda oldu.

Tüm gezginlere ve gezme planları yapanlara önerim, vahşi, ama adil doğanın görkemli dengesini, uyumunu yakından ve çıplak gözle gözlemlemek istiyorsanız Afrika’nın bu olağanüstü parklarını gezi listenize dahil etmenizdir. When Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of US arrived in Kenya for big game hunting in 1909 , he was advised to use Kiboko (whip) to the maximum since it was the only language Africans understood to stay orderly. Edgar Beacher Bronson, an American big game hunter who had just finished his safari in Kenya before the arrival of Roosevelt, wrote: "Roosevelt will have to close his eyes and accustom himself to occasional severe floggings of the African wapagazi (porters), for without it no safari could be held together a fortnight; discipline would soon disappear and that quickly be followed by open revolt," Kiboko is a flexible, but stiff straight whip cut out of hippo hide, that when used on human skin it draws blood or raises welts double its own diameter. To justify its use on Africans Bronson claimed a black man's skin has a far coaser fibre than the white man's, and therefore endures and recovers from punishment and wounds no white man could survive. He went on to cite his own experience in whipping African porters, claiming that most of them never held a grudge for whipping. You order him to lie down " he goes without a murmur and uncomplaining until the flogging is finished, and often springs to his feet, draws himself up and salutes his bwana." While Roosevelt had accepted the services of Somali servants based on Sir William McMillan's farm at Kilimambogo, his chosen head of Safari Mr. J. Cunninghame was greatly opposed to the idea and instead proposed the Waswahili. His reason being that the Waswahili could easily take in viboko's without complaining unlike the Somali who could not stand a blow, a kick or a Kiboko. Any man who treated them badly was pretty certain to end up with a knife sticking in his ribs sooner or later.
