It's just 7km south of Nairobi, making it the only wildlife park that's basically neighbors with a major city. Covering over 117.21 square kilometers, this place is home to over 100 cool mammals and is like a fancy breeding ground for rhinos and it even has an open extension to the south where animals can casually migrate to the adjacent Kitengela plains. It's like they have their own little vacation spot. This park was the first national park in Kenya to be officially opened to tourists and its southern boundary is formed by the Mbagathi River, which is basically like their natural border. And let's not forget about the diverse bird species, cheetahs, hyenas, leopards, and lions. There is chance for you to catch the wildebeest and zebra migrations in July and August; it's like their version of a summer vacation. There's even an Ivory Burning Site Monument and the Nairobi Safari walk and animal orphanage, this is a must go to destination especially if you are flying to Kenya and you are limited by time , you basically require less than a day to uncover the Kenya wildlife.

Nairobi Metro Fantasy Map
When I posted my Kenya Railways map earlier today, I said that I was tempted to make a fantasy map for a Nairobi metro system. And I ended up cranking one out way more quickly than I expected to!
I’ve never actually been to Nairobi (and given the state of LGBT rights in Kenya I might not ever be able to go), so I don’t claim to have a good understanding of the city’s geography—so this is mostly just me doing my best with a mixture of Google Maps and Apple Maps to try to estimate commute patterns from the street grid.
With that being said, let’s get into the routes. I’m envisioning this system as light rail—where some segments use the existing commuter rail right-of-way, some segments run in streets or medians, and there are a few tunnels. The colors of the Purple and Blue Lines were chosen arbitrarily, while the colors of the other three were chosen to make the flag of Kenya in the central trunk line.
The Blue Line begins in Ruaka and follows Limuru Road to Two Rivers Mall and the Northern Bypass from there to Runda, before following United Nations Ave and tunneling under the Sigiria Forest to Westlands. From there, the route follows the Uhuru Highway all the way to Imara Daima, joining the Red Line along existing commuter rail tracks to Syokimau and continuing into a tunnel to the airport.
The Purple Line begins in Mihango and follows the Eastern Bypass to Ruai and Kangundo Road from there to New Njiru Town, where it turns onto Komarock-Mwiki Road until the Kassarani West station at Thika Road, which it follows all the way to the Globe Roundabout. A quick jog along University Way takes it to join the Blue Line until Bunyala Road.
The Black Line begins in Gitaru and follows the Uhuru Highway all the way to West Parklands, before taking Ojijo Road and Parklands Road to reach the Globe Roundabout. From there, it follows Tom Mboya Street to Central, where it joins the current commuter rail mainline and continues to Embakasi Village.
The Red Line begins in Wangige and follows Highway C63 through Kikuyu, joining the existing commuter rail line just past the hospital. The route continues along the existing right-of-way through Central, and uses the same new tunnel as the Blue Line to get to the airport.
The Green Line begins at Galleria Mall and follows Highway C63 to Langata East before tunneling to the existing commuter rail line at Mbagathi. From there, it follows the existing right-of-way all the way to Ruiru.
If anyone familiar with Nairobi wants to weigh in on the route choices, please let me know! Although I will specify up front that I’m fully aware that the funds to build this system do not exist—but that’s the fun of crayon maps in the first place. Assuming the funds do exist, where should the routes go? That is the question.
EDIT 16 MARCH 2022: Hello to all the folks coming to this post from Mbithi Masya’s showcase of the map—thanks so much for showcasing the map, Mbithi!
I’m hoping to make a second version based on all the feedback I’ve been getting. So far, Rongai and Ngong are definitely gonna be included, and I’ll probably be making some tweaks to the Green Line.
I’ll also be polishing up the map’s visuals—I didn’t put too much effort into them because I never really expected people to see this, and I’m incredibly happy to have been proven wrong.
EDIT 16 March 2022: I’ve released an updated version of the map! Check it out here.

Africa suffers worst surge in Covid cases as delta variant spurs third wave of pandemic

Africa suffers worst surge in Covid cases as delta variant spurs third wave of pandemic

Africa, where less than 2% of the population is vaccinated against Covid-19, experienced its worst surge of cases last week since the pandemic began, the World Health Organization said Thursday.
The second-largest continent recorded more than 251,000 new Covid cases during the week ending July 4, a 20% increase from the prior week and a 12% increase from the January peak. Active cases in Africa recently surpassed 642,000, eclipsing a second-wave peak of 528,000 active cases in January, according to a BBC analysis of Johns Hopkins University data.
“Africa has just marked the continent’s most dire pandemic week ever. But the worst is yet to come as the fast-moving third wave continues to gain speed and new ground,” said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO’s regional director for Africa. “The end to this precipitous rise is still weeks away. Cases are doubling now every 18 days, compared with every 21 days only a week ago.”

More than sixteen African countries, including Malawi and Senegal, are seeing new cases rise. The more transmissible delta variant has been detected in at least 10 of those countries.
Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia, Zambia, Rwanda and Tunisia are also experiencing some of the worst upticks in infections, Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Hospitalizations have increased by more than 40% across the continent in recent weeks.
“Alarm bells should be going off,” says Dr. Tom Kenyon, chief health officer at Project HOPE and former director of the Center for Global Health at the U.S. CDC. He said Africa’s rate of new cases will soon surpass Asia’s. “Given the horrors we just saw in India, that should be cause for alarm and stimulate action.”
He said the Covid emergency in Africa “may become worse than anywhere else we’ve seen.”
South Africa is currently grappling with a devastating third wave of infections after the delta variant forced the country back into lockdown on June 28. A 9 p.m. curfew is currently in place in the country, while less than 1% of its residents are vaccinated against Covid. Across the continent, less than 2% of all people have been inoculated due to a slow international vaccine rollout that has left poorer nations waiting for the lifesaving shots. The 50 million doses administered to date in Africa make up just 1.6% of doses administered globally.

“Vaccine nationalism where a handful of nations have taken the lion’s share is morally indefensible and an ineffective public health strategy,” WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press briefing Wednesday. Tedros also blamed the lack of vaccine equity for a “wave of death” in parts of the world, including Africa.
Vaccine deliveries through Covax, a global initiative designed to ensure equitable access to Covid vaccines, are finally picking up after months of delay. More than 1.6 million doses have been delivered to Africa through the initiative, and more than 20 million doses of Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer vaccines are expected to be delivered to the continent soon. Norway and Sweden will also donate large amounts of vaccines to Africa.
“Some vaccine deliveries are expected in August, but nowhere near what is needed,” said Kenyon, who also served as the CDC’s country director in Botswana, Namibia and Ethiopia. “To be successful, a vaccine supply must be paired with a trained workforce and delivery systems.”
In total, 66 million doses have been delivered to Africa, with 40 million doses acquired through bilateral deals, 25 million supplied via Covax and 800,000 doses supplied by the African Union African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team.
“With much larger Covid-19 vaccine deliveries expected to arrive in July and August, African countries must use this time to prepare to rapidly expand the rollout,” said Moeti. The U.S., by comparison, has administered roughly 332 million shots to 55% of its population, according to U.S. CDC data.
