One of these days my daily dive into the Honkai Tumblr search results will give me the motivation to do a gigantic in-depth recap (and potential self-indulgent rework of the back third) of part 1's story, partly to wrack my brain around this insane ass story and also partly... so I can make as many thinly veiled and obnoxious comparisons to Tokusatsu, and if I make at least one of the Honkai Tumblr regulars even the vaguest bit interested in checking whatever the fuck I'm rambling about out I consider that a win
You lot have to experience Donbrothers' fresh brand of insanity at least once as a palate cleanser

Wanted to get my thoughts out on Project Venus!Kieran's design and how it is comparable to canon Pecharunt. It's all in images from my twitter bcoz I didn't feel like typing it:
Anyways finishing up Mochi Mayhem that specific design choice with Pecharunt made me realize that Dokutaro (Pecharunt in PV) will most definitely look the same regardless of if he's truly added in there fully or no (I may add my own Mochi Mayhem Epilogue, idk. Most of what happens in canon Mochi Mayhem PV!Kieran makes happen in canon nefore you fight him, esp with the possession stuff.)
I also thought using mochi, or kibidango, was smart since Momotaro used that to gain the stead of the dog, the pheasant and monkey. In Project Venus, Kieran uses the toxic chains on his headband, kinda like ghostly chains. The only example I can think of is Shinigami from Rain Code being BOUND TO Yuma, but being able to drag him around by invisible chains. That being said, much like PV!Kieran, it takes control of their mind and body, though Kieran is only somewhat aware of his actions since he is the host for Dokutaro, and merely needed to get to Area Zero.
Anyhow, much to think about and I need to develop more on Project Venus. Thought this was rlly cool how much canon Pecharunt and PV!Kieran resembled one another esp since it'a based off the same thing.

These stories are references to various Japanese folklore, though for the life of me I cannot figure out what Kojuro's was.
Nobunaga: Bamboo Cap Jizō
The story tells of an elderly poor couple, who lived in a mountain making bamboo caps. On a winter, near the New Year, the old man took his caps to sell so he can buy food. Some version says it's winter provisions, some says New Year celebratory items. On his way, he sees a row of Jizo statues (Buddha statues usually placed on roadsides) covered in snow. Feeling sorry for them, the old man cleaned off the snow and put all his caps on the statues. He didn't have enough caps for them, and gave the last Jizo his own cap (some version I saw said it was his scarf).
With no more caps to sell, he just went home. Later that night, the couple heard bumping noises outside and opened the door. They saw a pile of food in front of the door, and in the distance they could see little figures in bamboo caps leaving.
Mitsuhide: Momotarō
I think this is the most famous one of them all, and has been referenced in so many other media (anime, games, etc).
Momotarō was a boy who was born of a peach to an old couple. When he was grown, he heard of oni (ogres) terrorising the people and decided to set out to defeat them. His parents didn't like the idea, but eventually relented. The father gave him kibidango (kibi is an unknown grain, usually translated as millet) to eat on his journey.
On the way, Momotarō met a monkey, a dog, and a pheasant who wanted to join him in his journey in exchange for the kibidango. The group then travelled to Onigashima, successfully vanquished all the oni, and returned with all the treasure they found there.
By the way, the common version says that the wife found a giant peach, and Momotarō was inside when she cut it open. However, supposedly the "original"/older version of the story says that what she found was a divine peach. She and her husband ate the peach, became young again, and was able to conceive Momotarō through normal means.
Yukimura: Urashimatarō
Urashimatarō was a fisherman. One day, he found some kids tormenting a turtle and rescued the poor animal, setting the turtle free into the sea. Later, the turtle came back to him, and took Urashimatarō to the underwater Dragon King's palace (Ryūgujō).
There he was welcomed with a banquet and entertainment by the princess named Otohime. After some time, Urashima missed home and wanted to return. The people of the dragon palace tried to tell him not to, but he insisted, so in the end the princess let him go. Before leaving, she gave him a box (tamatebako) and told him never to open in.
When he reached land, Urashima found that hundreds of years has passed. The place is no longer recognisable, and his family and friends had long died. Distraught, he opened the box and he immediately grew older, as old as the hundreds years of age that has passed.
Some version says he just vanished into thin air after.
Saizo: Flower-growing old man
An elderly couple had a dog whom they loved dearly. One day, the dog began digging a hole in the field. The old man dug in the same spot where the dog was digging and found gold. His neighbour got jealous and borrowed the dog in hopes to find gold as well. However, he only got trash and rocks. In rage he killed the dog.
The dog's owner sadly buried his dog and planted a tree to keep the dog's grave safe from the weather. The old man eventually cut it down to make a pounding mortar, but to his surprise, gold would miraculously appear whenever he pounded rice in it. The greedy neighbour borrowed the mortar, and the old man kindly did. Like before, only trash and other gross stuff came out. The neighbour then burned the mortar.
The old man then asked if he could at least have the ashes for keepsake, and the neighbour let him. Then, wind blew the ashes towards a flowering tree, and suddenly flowers started blooming despite it being out of season. The old man scattered the ashes everywhere, making flowers bloom. Then the feudal lord heard about it, and requested the old man to make flowers grow on his favourite tree. The old man threw the ashes on the tree and flowers immediately started blooming.
The lord was happy, and showered the old man with gifts. The neighbour, still greedy, claimed that he could do the same. He started throwing ashes in front of the lord, but the ashes blew away and stung the lord in the eyes. The lord got angry by this and sent the greedy neighbour to prison.
Masamune: Crane Daughter
The more famous variation of this is probably the "Crane Wife" one, but there's actually a version where it's a "daughter".
One day an old man rescued a crane from a trap. Later, a beautiful young woman showed up at his house, seeking shelter. The old man and his wife then took in the girl as their daughter.
To repay their kindness, the daughter told the old couple that she would weave fabric for them to sell, but warned them to never peek into the room when she does so. The fabric the girl wove were exquisite, and they fetched such high price that the old couple quickly became quite well off.
However, whenever the girl finished weaving, she always looked so weak and exhausted. Worrying for their daughter, the old couple looked into the weaving room, and saw a crane pulling out its own feathers to weave.
After finishing the bolt, the daughter confessed to being the crane the old man rescued, but now that they've seen her true form, she could not stay. She turned back into a crane and flew away.
The crane wife story is exactly the same, except the rescuer is a young man who married the crane woman.

Just watched Kingohger vs Donbrothers and honestly, it's everything I could've wanted from that crossover. Extremely stupid (temporary) deaths for everyone, up to and including choking on kibidango; arguments between Himeno and Rita vs Haruka and Sonoza over if/how children's media should also cater to an adult audience (the META omg); haiku at inappropriate moments; Jirou and Kaguragi having a muscle-off; Inuzuka and Sononi having Chikyuu wanted criminal counterparts; just a stupid lot of fun all around. Also a scene at a certain afterlife oden cart that I literally screamed at.
Overall, well worth watching, and clearly made with a deep fondness for both series and their characters.

My brain wants to ramble about Mario movies, so I will do that. There will be bias, and there will be spoilers, but I think I'm going to at least put the section about the 2023 movie under a read more. Let's begin.
Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! (1986)
My love, my light, my heart.
Making a movie based on the Mario origin story(?) of "guys stumble into fantasy world, save princess from monster" is difficult if you don't add something to it, but adding things comes with the risk of deviating from the source material’s vibe, since it’s so simple. It’s the same problem with movies based on Dr. Seuss books.
Something a lot of people don't realize when watching this one is that Super Mario Bros. only came out a year prior. The people tasked with making this movie had very little to work with. Luigi didn't even have a consistent color scheme (though prior to this, he was always depicted with green somewhere.)
This movie’s solution to these problems? Keep it simple. Mario and Luigi spend the movie collecting "the three legendary powerups" with a dog and then go fight Koopa. They have misadventures on the way, and Mario eats Mario-branded ramen. It's fun, it's silly, it's goofy!
This is all accompanied with a charming art style that really takes advantage of the ability to push character expressions. For the cast, we have:
Mario - He’s not the smartest, the strongest, or most fearless, but he’s determined, and sometimes that’s all you need. This movie depicts him as a lovestruck dreamer, so a good chunk of his lines involve him calling out to “Piichi-hime~” Also, he’s a gamer. His character is nothing unique, but it sets the tone of this movie, something that I feel like Mario’s character does in all three.
Luigi - Pickaxe in hand, his number one priority is getting his coins. He and Mario share about three brain cells total, but he lacks the idealism of his brother, trying to keep him grounded in the things that really matter: money, food, and their business as…grocers? He’s there for his brother when it counts, though. Most of the cast has their fair share of goofy moments, but he is the designated comic relief, and Yuu Mizushima’s performance serves that well. He sounds unhinged half the time, it’s great! Fun fact: This is the first time Luigi is depicted as thinner and taller than Mario.
Peach - She spends most of the time wishing that Mario would save her, as one might expect, but even this early on, she has a little bit of agency. Her first introduction is her fighting off the enemies after her, and she manages to pull a clever trick on Koopa midway through, though it doesn’t help her much.
Koopa - Very doting on Peach and willing to accommodate her whatever way he can, except for letting her go. His portrayal by singer Akiko Wada combined with the rounded artstyle makes him more adorable than menacing.
Kibidango - The dog that tags along with Mario and Luigi. He tries to be their voice of reason, but he can’t talk, and they don’t listen. He’s mostly there to help the plot along and provide a twist at the end.
For the most part, this movie sticks to using material from the game. There’s some deviations, like the dog and a wizard, but they don’t feel too out of place and, if anything, lend to the movie’s fairy tale-like quality.
Mario games generally try to maintain a whimsical, timeless vibe, and this movie captures that best. It’s not perfect, but it's a fun little romp that I highly recommend watching at least once, only an hour long. Please watch it!
Next are my thoughts on Super Mario Bros. (1993).
I also finished my thoughts on Super Mario Bros. (2023) if you're interested.
#text post#super mario bros#the great mission to rescue princess peach#it's so strange to me when people say this version of luigi is wario-like#yes they wear yellow and both like money but wario is greedy out of selfishness. this version of luigi is greedy out of practicality#he's a small business owner#he has bills to pay#his brother is running off after a girl who for all he knows is a gaming-induced hallucination
