Car Hunting (part 5)
I’m almost to the finish line. I got some helpful input from my relatives on which cars they had good opinions of. After reviewing my options I have finally settled on the 2020 Chevy Bolt EV. The Bolt gets 259 miles of range with a 66kWh battery. It has all the technology I am looking for with Android Auto, a nice console screen, a backup camera, and safety features. 2020 Chevy Bolt EV I…

2023 Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV Limited AWD
Families looking for efficient wheels and good power and comfort may want to check out the plug-in hybrid version of Hyundai's fine Santa Fe.
Plug-in power cuts emissions, boosts gas mileage for family SUV … Nearly all automakers are now hybridizing their lineups, either with regular hybrid systems to extend gas mileage and mildly cut emissions, or with plug-ins that do more of both. No surprise then that Hyundai has dropped a plug-in hybrid system into its popular Santa Fe mid-size SUV, to great efficiency effect. A quick…

*writing down notes in my actual physical journal as a sort of exported gisted journal of the conclusions I've come to lmao*
#fun#yeah okay I think I've decided on the Kia Niro HEV. like. it'll be fine#the PHEV might be more to drive but I feel like maybe I don't NEED to have that lmao#and the Niro isn't an actual SUV but I also don't need it to be lol. so it'll be fine#the price is less nice but the only way to go down on that would be to buy used#and the used option is a 2019 one in silver#the 2023 is redesigned and has additional safety features apparently#so yeah... okay me @ self stop over thinking lol like the car is fine#and again... I like the phev in theory but maybe in practice I'd find it fiddly#I think the gas savings wouldn't break even for many many yrs bc I don't drive a whole ton#but that maaay change depending on if my parents decide to sell the house in a couple yrs or not lol#god why is housing in this state so expensive lmao. if I lived in middle america I could afford to just buy a house already...#personal

I feel like when you say you're a car nerd, people assume you're either into sportscars/racecars or, like... I don't know what to call the other category. Classic cars? I dunno. I just know that people go wild over cars that aren't currently made and I haven't ever really looked into the reasons why but I'm sure they make sense once you have the right background.
But anyway, there is also a third option? Because I just found out about the Kia Niro PHEV, and man is that a fascinating car. It's far from perfect, but it really seems to hit a sweet spot of market segments that none of the other manufacturers seem to offer (in the US).
Like, look. Say you don't have kids, you want a car, and you're financially well-off enough to follow the Sam Vimes boots principle. You probably want to have at least 4 seats in your car that are actually, legitimately comfortable for adults, yeah? Kind of limiting not to. But beyond that, unless you have specific needs there's no reason to have a larger, more expensive, or less fuel efficient (and thus more expensive, in the long run) car than that. If you can afford the upfront cost, you want to be able to do 80% of your driving trips on electricity because CO2 bad (so, PHEV or EV), but ideally the upfront cost isn't exorbitant. You want to be able to do long trips without borrowing a different car or something, so the range on long trips should be good (no super-short-range EVs, though these days they're all solid) and if you're doing them on gas you still want to be efficient. In a perfect world, your car drives/accelerates well even though it's fuel efficient, it isn't ugly as sin (though you'll likely have to deal with some "I'm an electric vehicle" styling, rip), and you're not handing money to Elon Musk.
The way I see it, we're either okay with a full electric vehicle and the limitations that come with that (I haven't looked into them lately, but presumably something like a Bolt or Ioniq), or we're not. And if we're not... then basically we just want a Prius Prime but normal-shaped, so you don't hit your head on the ceiling, and somehow without a higher price tag or a significant reduction in efficiency. Oh wait, that exists. Wild. I mean, I expected and would honestly have been fine with fuel economy in the mid-30s since you should be on electricity most of the time anyway, but okay, sure, I will take forty eight miles per gallon, yes please, Kia are you cheating on the EPA tests you have to tell me if you're cheating on the EPA tests.
So, yeah. But anyway I feel like when you say you're a car nerd you mean... not like this. So I'm never sure how to, you know, get that across.
(Aside: if you do have a big family and want to throw a lot of money at a super nice electrified 7-seater without actively throwing money away, the Pacifica PHEV and Mazda CX-90 PHEV seem like really interesting options in the absence of a hypothetical Toyota Sienna Prime/Toyota-Highlander-Prime-that's-not-a-Lexus. Another US market segment with a lot of missing options at the moment. Did you know the base model Sienna is a hybrid now, though? That's neat.)

Exploring the Future of Paint Protection Films: Market Trends and Innovations
The global paint protection film (PPF) market was valued at USD 499.7 million in 2023 and is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.9% from 2024 to 2030. This growth is primarily driven by a shift in consumer preferences towards preserving the aesthetic and finish of their vehicles, as well as growing awareness about the importance of maintaining automobiles' external appearance.
Consumers are increasingly seeking products that provide long-lasting protection against scratches, chips, and other damage that can affect the vehicle's paint. Paint protection films offer an effective solution by acting as a clear, durable layer that safeguards the vehicle's paint from everyday wear and tear, such as rock chips, bird droppings, and UV damage. As the demand for maintaining vehicles in pristine condition rises, the market for paint protection films is expected to see steady growth.
In particular, the United States is one of the largest automotive markets in the world and is expected to be a major driver of the paint protection film market. The U.S. market is characterized by a high level of consumer interest in automotive customization and protection products. As more consumers recognize the value of paint protection films in maintaining the appearance of their vehicles, demand for these films is expected to grow significantly during the forecast period.
Regional Insights
Europe:
Europe held the largest revenue share of 31.6% of the paint protection film market in 2023, primarily due to its robust automotive sector. The automotive industry in Europe plays a significant role in the region's economy, contributing over 7% of the European Union’s GDP. The sector is highly integrated with other industries, including textiles, chemicals, steel, mobility, and repair services, alongside information and communication technology (ICT).
Europe is home to major automotive manufacturers such as Volkswagen AG, Stellantis NV, Renault Group, and Mercedes-Benz Group AG. Additionally, foreign automakers like Hyundai, Toyota, and Kia have established significant manufacturing operations within the region. Countries such as Germany, Italy, France, and Spain are key hubs for automotive production, while nations like the Czech Republic and Hungary are home to a large number of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) specializing in automotive components.
The demand for paint protection films (PPF) in Europe is driven by the strong automotive sector, which increasingly emphasizes vehicle customization, durability, and long-term value retention. The region’s well-established automotive industry, coupled with the growing interest in keeping vehicles in pristine condition, positions Europe as a dominant player in the global PPF market.
North America:
North America is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.9% from 2024 to 2030. A significant contributor to this growth is the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), particularly in the U.S. States like California, New Jersey, Washington, and Louisiana offer various tax incentives such as rebates, tax exemptions, and credits to encourage the adoption of EVs. For example, California provides rebates for the purchase and use of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and other zero-emission vehicles, while New Jersey and Washington exempt sales and use taxes on EVs. These tax benefits are expected to stimulate the market for EVs, which, in turn, will increase the demand for paint protection films to safeguard the exteriors of these vehicles.
In addition to the automotive market, the growing aerospace and defense sector in North America is also anticipated to drive demand for paint protection films. Both the U.S. and Canada are mature automotive markets, with a high proportion of pre-owned vehicles in circulation, further boosting the demand for PPF. The increasing focus on vehicle protection and aesthetics, coupled with the rising popularity of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)-based PPF due to its superior scratch resistance and aesthetic appeal, will also play a significant role in expanding the market.

Cruising with the Top Down in my 2024 Kia Sportage PHEV
Been obsessed with my new whip lately - the 2024 Kia Sportage from Airportkia. This SUV is seriously amazing! It's got everything I need - enough space for all my adventures, a sleek design that turns heads everywhere I go, and all the latest tech features to keep me connected and safe. Love that sunroof for those perfect summer drives!
(P.S.1: If you're in the GTA and looking for an amazing Kia dealership, definitely check out Airportkia. Their staff were super helpful and friendly, and they have a huge selection of cars to choose from!)
(P.S.2: It was our customer's review after he bought a 2024 Kia Sportage PHEV)

honestly it's too bad that honda doesn't currently have any PHEVs in the US. that mostly-serial-hybrid powertrain really feels suitable for a PHEV, as it's part of the way to an electric car anyway, with a ton more electric oomph than the Kia Niro PHEV powertrain, which would be a very reasonable cross-shop, and even a bit more than the Prius Prime. and it sounds like the handling is potentially noticeably better.
