hello! so there is a word of god post on race (doesn't mention John but mentions that Gideon is "mixed Maori"), BUT I frankly don't think word of god statements are worth any weight without actual in-text support (see: the "dumbledore is gay" situation). SO!

Specific evidence that John Gaius is Maori, as revealed in Nona the Ninth:

When he is listing his education, John mentions having gone to Dilworth School (John 20:8). Dilworth is an all boys boarding school in Auckland and accepts students based on financial need instead of academic or sporting achievements. Demographics appear to be about 70% low income Maori boys, indicating that it is highly likely that John is Maori

John reports that P- said he looked like a "Maori-TV pink panther" (John 15:23) when his eyes turned gold. Maori TV is a TV station that is focused primarily on Maori culture & language revitalization, with presumably all or mostly Maori hosts, and tbh I don't see why P- would say this unless John was himself Maori

John uses a te reo Māori phrase ("kia kaha, kia māia") (John 5:20) when he is saying goodbye to the corpses in the cryo lab before the power is shut off. Though it is possible he said this as a non-Maori kiwi, but in combination with the previous two points of evidence I think this all very strongly points to him being Maori

He also renames his daughter Kiriona Gaia, "Kiriona" being just literally the name "Gideon" in te reo Māori

Why is this relevant to The Locked Tomb?

In Nona the Ninth, we learn that before he completed apotheosis and ate the solar system, John was basically trying to save the earth from capitalism-caused climate change. Climate justice and the rights of indigenous people over their own land are deeply tied together, in the same way that climate catastrophe and capitalism/ imperialism/ colonialism are linked. disclaimer that this is NOT my area of study and others have definitely said it better; this is just the basic gist as I understand it, but on quick search I found some sources here and here if you want to do some reading.

TLT is not a series that hands you anything on a silver platter, but i don't think it is a stretch to see John as an indigenous man trying to save the earth and getting ignored and shut down at every turn by primarily western colonial powers (PanEuro, the USA) who declare him a terrorist and then as a reader thematically connecting that to the experience of indigenous climate activists IRL

I think that by the time the books take place, John is 10k years removed from the cultural context he grew up in, with the Nine Houses having become a genocidal colonial power in their own right (with more parallels to be made between John's forever war for the resources of literal life energy and like, oil wars), but I also think that John Gaius is a fictional character who can represent and symbolize multiple different things in service of telling a story. GUIDE TO SCHOOL

Hii! It’s me Kia, and today I’ll be giving you a run down on how I’m improving in school! For context : I’ve always struggled a bit with school but recently I’ve been getting much better at it, I have ADHD which makes it harder to pay attention, but I’ve improved, and here’s how I did it!

Remember : you’re doing this for your future self, you can do this!! Make yourself proud, do something great! You don’t need to study every single day for hours on end, studying can be 15-20 minutes, or however long you want it to be!

Basics overall instructions : minimize your distractions! Keep your phone in another room when studying, get an app that locks your social media apps until a certain time, and turn off your notifications, have a cozy study spot, choose calm peaceful music without lyrics! Active learning is better than passive learning, but mixing them both together is chefs kiss, one day do passive learning, and the next active learning, put what you’re reading into action!! Don’t just let it sit in your head. Practice! Like I said, active learning is amazing! you can practice anywhere, in the line for your coffee, grab your flashcards and do em! Just like that you’ll do the 30 minutes of flashcards you wanted to! Take a look at mock exams and try doing those! Take notes in an organized matter, that makes sense to you!! Explain the material in words that make sense to you. Don’t cram the night before a test, you won’t remember most of it, instead study days in advance, and the night before the test, review the subject!! but most importantly.. listen to your teachers!! Try to pay attention in class, what I do to help me with my ADHD is get a piece of paper, a pen, and scribble on it while my teacher talks, or I use a squishie, or a putty! Something to get me preoccupied as I try to listen to the teachers.

Note taking : when taking notes first do them quickly in class, just try to get all the information word for word. Then, rewrite them: make it more organized, highlight the important parts, add an example, brief and more simplified summary.

Study methods I personally love : My favorite method for English is the 3-2-1 recall method, read it 3x, say it out loud 2x, and write it on paper 1x. Active recall I use flash cards, or I either ask my friends to make random questions on the subject/material I’m learning, and if they’re not there? I ask ChatGPT this prompt “Please create flash cards and quiz questions for me on __”. Feynman method explain the subject as if you were talking to a fifth grade, simplifying it! Blurting, quickly read over your textbook or study guide, and write down as much as you can remember then reopen the textbook/study guide and compare what you wrote on your notebook, to the text in the textbook/study guide!

Math : this subject wasn’t exactly my strong suit, but what I did to make my life easier is relearn everything I learned in middle school-elementary school, yes everything, even addition and subtraction. By doing that I’ve gotten a better understanding, and grasp on what I’m doing now in algebra, luckily for me I have a friend whom is a tutor, and she often offers to tutor me every now and then! Then I’d apply what I learned irl, usually to figure out how much my total or what the discount would be if I’m at.. Sephora or any other store, I would whip out my trusty calculator, but instead I started calculating it myself, active learning(Reading then engaging in the subject and practicing the subject) is better than passive learning(only reading the things you’re learning), math is a subject you have to pay attention to and practice, use IXL or ask your friends to come up with random equations for you, and practice doing those daily!

English : I’d say this is a fairly easy subject, but due to it being easy I’d underestimate it, and the projects assigned, “oh I’ll just do this “Later tonight..” and that’s how I ended up with 10 missing assignments and an F. So my advice for getting better at English? Stay on top of your work, don’t underestimate it! What I did to improve this English procrastination was call my friend for 45 minutes, and we’d do a “silent study”, in the silent study we’d both shut up, and work on our homework, and if we needed help or feedback we’d do a quick wave to each other. Now for improving in writing etc.. is because of a tip I got from an older friend, she told me to write essays on things I like! Likeee.. I’d write an essay on the Percy Jackson series after I’d finish a book, a summary on what happened, how it made me feel.. etc, on the topic of books, reading can also help you heavily improve in English.

Science : to improve in science I make acronyms, lots and lots of acronyms to help with my memorization, an example: “Ricky is left handed” for reactants are on the left. Similar to science I went all the way back to the basics, and relearned them. I started with grasping the core concepts (Laws of motion, atomic structure etc..), then I’d relate this to real life, photosynthesis in plants, gravity affecting objects etc..

In my hc, there r vehicles that r naturally born from their parents (yes they can have sex shut up) and those who r built for certain reasons or for mass production (just like cold construction in Transformers)

S-70's variants (Firehawk, Seahawk, Pavehawk, Jayhawk, etc) are part of the latter. They were built based on Blackhawks' DNAs, and built into bodies/forms that fits their manufacturing reasons(?)

Once built, the manufacturer would expect them to adjust into maturity ASAP, since unlike normal vehicles who go through the childhood phase etc, they were built for specific reasons and are expected to start working in less than a year

They'd be put through intense training etc in special facilities based on their models

Valkyrie is one of the Firehawks, built with additional equipments for firefighting+SAR (night vision equipments, heat sensors for SAR reasons, built-in water tank+extended landing gear, rescue hoist, cargo hook, water pump to get water from lakes, infrared, weather radar, etc) (these r actually included in Firehawks irl so I'm not making these up other than the heat sensors)

She spends a year of training in the facility along with other Firehawks, several Jayhawks that were going to be released to Coast Guard, and a Blackhawk that were undergoing a training to be a Navy SAR.

They had developed sibling-like relationship with each other, but they weren't aware of the term until the Blackhawk explained abt it.

These helos r completely and painfully innocent/clueless bc their life had been revolving around firefighting lol. The trainers r so strict. No fiction books/movies/etc, no communicating with the outside world, no going outta the training facility, etc

They were basically raised to be the firefighting aircrafts to be sent out in rougher situations when other aircrafts can't fly, and they've been told to not get attached to anyone, mentally nor physically, bcs getting KIA (killed in action) is common in firefighting.

The Firehawks still developed siblings bonds tho (⁠◡⁠ ⁠ω⁠ ⁠◡⁠)✨ they can only act laid-back around each other dbjsjdkdj

This causes Valkyrie to feel foreign/weird when it comes to receiving affection, but she started pampering others with love etc after the Blackhawk showed her some of his novels in secret 😋

After getting certified, Valkyrie and the others got stationed to CalFire, assisting the intense fire season around the area.

The higher-ups kinda fucked up and made several Firehawks keep on working on a huge wildfire in nighttime with close to zero visibility

Their heat sensors, night vision equipments, and GPS r basically useless in that situation so they can't locate each others' position

Valkyrie and another Firehawk accidentally crashed onto each other

Yea basically it traumatized her

The crash caused her to get anxious to fly in the dark without her night vision equipments, and she'd turn on her heat sensors 24/7, day and night, out of anxiety

She can't stand crowded places/airspaces bcs of this since the numerous heat signs would overwhelm her system, causing sensory overload

After the fire that burnt the whole Piston Peak National Park happened, the higher-ups sent her to assist the PPAA, deeming her a good choice since she'll have less sensory overloads there

Imma shorten it up and she basically developed a semi-romantic relationship with Blade, no intense stuff tho

It's the type of relationship u go through bc u feel comfy around each other? Just cuddling, sharing ur stories and past, doing stuff together, supporting each other. No sexual stuff and they barely flirt with each other bc both of them aren't used to it???

Valkyrie would do night patrols with her equipments on until 3-ish am, sleep until 5 or 6 am, and steal some naps whenever there's no fire nor work to be done (with Blade's permission)

She'd do stunts while doing water drops (sideslips, loops, etc) for fun as long as Blade didn't notice her (he actually did, but she did her job and there was no casualties so he keeps his mouth shut)

She listens to Japanese rock songs until she discovered romantic songs, and she'd sing them for Blade bcs she's bad with her own words when it comes to showing him how much she loves him 😭 (she only sings in front of Blade tho, she's too shy to do it in front of the others)

She has been having a hard time trying to not get attached to Blade bc she doesn't want either of them to get hurt if one of them dies

She'd secretly go into Blade's hangar after her night patrols for a short cuddle and quick nuzzles

Blade would do the same whenever she takes naps

As promised: Rite Here Rite Now Review

Spoiler free above the cut, spoilers WILL be under the cut. (Word count: 1110)

Wow wow wow. In simple terms, RHRN was incredible. The recordings were edited very well, the crowd was great, the vocals were amazing as always, and the long-awaited continuation of the chapters was very satisfying.

As a newer fan (really started listening right when Re-Imperatour was ending) I unfortunately never got the chance to ever see any shows live. However, despite my newer status, I have made Ghost a key part of my interests. (ask any of my lovely irl friends, they've had the misfortune of hearing my rants.) I've watched countless interviews and old rituals in order to make up for lost time, but never have I felt more immersed in any Ghost media than I did when I saw the KIA shows on the big screen. It didn't feel like I was in row G seat 12 of my "local" mall's Regal Cinema, it felt like I was right there in LA.

The opening 5 minutes as Square Hammer plays softly in the background was great. Because there wasn't much going on on the screen, everyone in the theater that I was in was softly humming or singing to themselves quietly (Side note: I was worried that people would be super disruptive as the movie was going on, and I was really happy to not have those worries realized. My theater was respectful for the most part, and the only time anyone sang was during that five-minutes of not much.) It felt very nice to belong amongst such a nice community irl. As an introverted neurodivergent, sometimes I struggle to find places or people welcoming or sharing my interests. So being in a theater full of people who love the same thing as me, as much as me, was such a nice feeling.

The cinematography during the entirety of RHRN was great, with my personal favorite segment being Con Clavi Con Dio. The editing was really nice for the most part, and I love the development Cardi was given throughout the movie. I feel my one gripe with the filming is that while we did get great perspective shots on the ghouls, we didn't get much of their personalities. And yes, I get that technically they are just hired musicians and not the main focus by any means, I think it just would have been nice to see more than just a handful of clips of them interacting with each other or Papa.

All in all, RHRN was a wonderful experience and I strongly suggest any Ghost fan out there gives it a watch.

And now its time for my more story-based review. Spoilers under the cut!!

Again, wow. I was pretty excited to finally get some more of the chapters, I'm a big fan of anything that has "lore" even if it doesn't need it, so I definitely owe the chapters a thanks for really getting me into Ghost.

I was thrilled to find that we finally had a true conformation of Cardi's parents. I had always theorized that while Nihil was Copia's father, Copia had come from an affair with the audience members in the Kiss the Go-Goat music video, and that Imperator was Copia's adoptive mother after Nihil's abandonment of him. It's good to know I was wrong rather than not I guess.

Something I also enjoyed was the constant foreshadowing of Sister's death. It wasn't very subtle, but its definitely something I only connected the dots to at the end. Whenever we saw Sister, we saw pills. Lots and lots of pills. I had originally brushed this off as a background joke, but once Cardi reads her note, I realized that the pills were for her unnamed "condition." I think going into it, all of us knew someone would die, I just personally thought that someone would be Copia, not Sister.

That after-credit scene was amazing too. I loved Cardi's new outfit, and the conformation that yes, there will have to be another papa. Which obviously, yes, of course there has to be a new papa, but now, it just feels so much more real. Speaking of the new papa I WISH WE COULD HAVE SEEN HIM AAH! I get cliffhangers, but he was RIGHT THERE!

I'm excited for the next era and the next papa, the next costume of the ghouls. I have a theory though. I see a lot of people being stressed about the changing of the ghoul costumes with the new era, but I think we have one more cycle with the Impera masks. I've noticed that each mask and costume stays the same for two cycles. Opus to Infestissumam, the only thing that changed was the costumes becoming more remnant of Catholic ministry-wear. From Meliora to Prequelle, the masks stayed mostly the same, now with an added more feminine looking mask and more "suit like" outfits over religious attire. I definitely think we have one more era with the Impera masks, but different costumes. Also speaking of the ghouls one of them talked!! I think it was Mountain, but honestly I have a shit memory and it could have been anyone.

Onto my focus on who Cardi actually is. I am so happy we finally got more of a look into his mind now that he is papa. I feel like his personality when he was Cardinal was very timid and awkward, however I never thought he would stay that way at all. I like that he's way more confident now, to the point that he's questioning the higher authority of the ministry and their ways. I love that this confidence is partly just a mask to keep his fears of death hidden. I think his fears manifesting as an angry, questioning personality gives him a lot more depth than if he just gained confidence through his performances, which obviously happened too, don't get me wrong.

The last thing I want to discuss is the credit song, "The Future is a Foreign Land." First off, loved it. It was great musically, and the uncertainty in the lyrics fit very well with all of our uncertainty about the next cycle. Second off, I can't be the only one who think it sounds very similar to Subvision. I personally love Subvision, and even if its only for that one song, I'm super glad that style was revived for Ghost.

In conclusion, I love the developments made in RHRN, and I am more than excited for whatever is next. I think my brain will have to marinate on what I saw a bit more, maybe then I'll have some actual theories.

She’s going big and she’s not going home. My girl gets a graffitied 32oz stanley cup filled with eight shots of espresso. She calls it a double quad when she orders it and it makes kia wince every. single. time

She’s getting a spicy mocha ofc. Kia keeps a bottle of cayenne powder next to the sauces and syrups just for her

A mocha is a little too one note, even w the spice, so she gets a lil cherry and dragonfruit syrup in there too

She’s probably just getting whole milk base, and kia refuses to make a hot version (only iced) so ruby doesn’t drink it too fast

She gets a pretty big drink, but smth more like 16-20oz than rubys mega drink lmao. Three shots of espresso max, otherwise she gets jittery and a little too tunnel vision hyperfocused on things

She usually uses a chai base with a bit of orange syrup. Spice is more her jam than sweet chai but she’s down for either.

My girl gets almond milk foamed into a super frothy cappuccino, with a big head thick enough to support a generous amount of cinnamon sugar.

Sunny Madison

Her drinks are always barely caffeinated otherwise she’s bouncing off the walls lmao. She’s a 16oz drink MAXIMUM, and usually goes for a 12oz drink instead. Either way she only gets a single shot of espresso.

Her drink is so sweet that it completely masks the espresso. She gets a white chocolate caramel mocha with extra white chocolate, caramel drizzle around the cup, and a pump of vanilla syrup. Half the cup is just. Syrup.

All that sugar gets blended with ice and cream until it’s a thick frappuccino, which is then topped with whipped cream, more caramel drizzle, and rainbow sprinkles. Somewhere in there is a shot of espresso.

If kia has some on hand, sunny will absolutely get this made with butterscotch and vanilla ice cream.

Nine times out of ten she’s just getting black coffee. Maaaaybe she’ll ask kia to add a pump of vanilla, but it’s usually just plain ol coffee.

When she’s feeling festive she’ll get a doppio and drink it so fast she burns the tip of her tongue

Seriously tho, jade is the kind of girl who gets coffee “black as my soul.” When she needs more caffeine she just adds shots to her coffee for increasingly strong red eyes.

Skyler LOVES a cold brew, the smoother the better. Nitro cold brews are her favorites but she understands when kia can’t do that for her lol.

Her coffee is usually unsweetened and topped with cold foamed oat milk

Her favorite way to experiment with flavors is through infusion. She and kia love to play around with chicory and earl grey tea, and her current obsession is infused with Darjeeling.

The first twelve times she went to the rainbow union she just got whatever kia recommended and was too shy to ask for anything special, but ever since they started collaborating her infusions are becoming increasingly popular

Violet Willow

Oh my god she has the most annoying drink in the world. Kia loves her and STILL groans when she comes in. Baristas everywhere fear violet willow.

It’s an iced 16oz latte with half coconut half soy milk, to start, cold foamed for velvety smoothness with light ice. She has her own purple sparkly cup with a rhinestone V on the front.

She gets four shots of espresso and is VERY particular about how they’re pulled. If her espresso is too sour/bitter she won’t hesitate to have the drink remade.

Her base flavor is white chocolate and lavender, with a half pump of blackberry, a half pump of almond, and a half pump of vanilla. Not too much syrup that it’s aggressively sweet, but all five flavors need to be there or she WILL complain.

Her reusable cup has a dome lid so she can see the whipped cream with “just enough stevia sprinkle to make it sparkle!” Kia definitely keeps pearl non pareils just for violet (that violet bought btw)

Kia has this drink down to a science at this point. When violet crosses the threshold of the rainbow union kia is already weighing out syrups and sauces. Their dynamic is tenuous at best.

Bella Parker

Bella needs a lot of caffeine, now. She’s getting a triple shot cortado with half and half, extra creamy

She gets a pump of rose syrup steamed with her breve to add a little subtle complex sweetness. It makes the whole cafe smell delicately perfumed while Kia’s making it

Kia sometimes adds one of violets pearl sprinkles on top of the foam and it delights bella every single time

Amaya Raine

She needs something she can drink super fast that’ll get her brain to focus but she’s amaya so of COURSE it’s gonna be cute

She gets an espresso con panna with rainbow sprinkles! Simple (two shots with whipped cream), fast, and sugary sweet

Kia always adds a pump of vanilla to the espresso to complement the vanilla in her house made whipped cream

BIO: Growing up in a cramped Polish neighbourhood in New York gave Pepper a deep love and appreciation for home cooking, and watching prime time bake-off shows with their mother after school gave them the inspiration to take what they learned in the kitchen to new heights. Now as the top student of Rainbow High’s small-but-thriving culinary department (and top chef at Rainbow Union), Pepper’s out to prove once and for all that just like fashion, cuisine is an art form all its own, and what the eye sees is just as important as what the tongue tastes. From the perfectly swirled tye-dye frosting on their cupcakes to the subtle spice in every bite of their kielbasa-topped pizzas, no one can deny that Pepper is a true artist in the kitchen—not even Vera.
